Rain or shine says the tickets. Its looking like rain. Lets hope it rains itself out earlier in the day.
Going both nights. Who wants to make some predictions?

dark star . . duh ;)
The forecast is looking much more promising today. Instead of the heavy rain predicted now the weather channel online is saying thunderstorms.
What can we expect from a Friday the 13th show???
The weather is definitly looking better and by the 2nd set we should all be styling. Not that we have heard this on the tour but a tasty Mission in the Rain wouldn't hurt to much nor would a Wearwolves of London to kick in the Friday the 13th spirit.
Funny...I've had Warewolves in my head since I woke up. That and the Dreidel song, though I doubt they'll break out with a Dreidel jam.
They will save the Dreidel Jam for the Chanukah shows..
- Shakedown ?
- Terrapin ?
- Estimated has been in my head since I woke up this morning.
- WRS ?
- New Speedway ?
...this darkness has got to give. See evryone out there. Peace.

We are due for an Unbroken Chain one of these two nights last one played in alpine
I need some help with MTA-
The schedule shows the last NJ Transit train from Penn Station leaving @ 1:41am. The latest LIRR train I can take is 12:19am and arriving @ PS @ 1:04. Are there any alternatives to LIRR that would allow me to leave later but still catch the 1:41? What about some alternatives to get back to my car in North Jersey if I take a later LIRR that drops me off after 1:41?
Also, how do I get from LIRR Freeport to JB? What bus would I take?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
park your car in newark or hoboken....then you can take the PATH back instead of NJtransit. PATH runs all night.

the stage design is questionable.
looks like two half-erect wrinkled penises.
As usual, seeing the first set selections & picture "song" captions has me anticipating the post-show reviews.
Also, it's been bugging me since Red Rocks, but I think I've finally decided (thanks to Taperrob's great pictures tonight) what I think that "structure" backdrop looks like:
A pair of hands rubbing an invisible "crystal ball"/"snow globe" with the band inside it.
That's my take, anyway. Anyone else?
(sorry, don't want to unintentionally hijack the thread, just curious what everyone thinks)
If thats the case, Jimmy has escaped.
Waiting for the second set update.

Tell me they are not covering Metallica now
Well, normally I would defer to the female perspective on this, since mine is quite limited.
(i.e. I only pay attention to what MINE looks like; now, people with big thumbs, that I've seen)
However, it seems to me that there shouldn't be several parts sticking out.
With two opposite each other, could that represent a pissing match? (gee, which two guys could it be?)
I like "Jerry's wings" to keep it positive, but just like the reviews, it's all good.
was there a curfew issue, why WBYGN as the whole encore, usually its like US Blues>Bid you, or Brokedown>bidyou....????
tell me its not the metalica song please tell me please tell me please tell me
it is a metallica song but other than that( I don't listen to metallica) this looks like a good one.....peace.
I believe Taperrob confirmed it was Metallica during the chat.
Metalica? Really? wow! hahaha lmao! I love it! imo . And I would practically kill to get a second set that looks that hot on "paper". I would'nt complain about the short encore. My only show was Deer creek! Tell you what . I'll trade you my Encore and first set (which was actually pretty good) for this second set from tonight! Wow I can't wait to hear this!!!! Thanx, Taperrob, you da man!
If you look closely at the back drop, I think you will see that the phallic symbols or "wings" are Jerry's hand, you know, the one with the finger missing!!
Sounds like a great show tonight. Got several calls during the 2nd set.
show was great.
hightlights for me: ujb was beautiful; help/slip ... franklin had the place hopping. unbroken chain, lyrical snafu's aside, always makes me happy. lowlights: that metallica tune threw me me off a bit and strange world still to new to me. the latter i could get used to, but warren please no more metallica.
i wish the keybords were more in the mix- they got lost sometimes, which is a shame.
lights and backdrop well done.
crowd was beautiful as always, and the cops have been worse.
i was actually kinda hoping for rain, but no complaints.
peace, see you all tomorrow.
"nothing else matters" - metallica cover? oh..my..goodness! how freakin' cool!!!! How can you people...i mean ANYONE posture like "tell me it's not a metallica song"...PUUULLLEEEESSSEEE!!! How cool! None of you could even imagine the Grateful Dead pulling something like this out! Don't do YOURSELF a dis-service by turning your ears and minds off based on something you haven't heard!!!!!! No one except those at the show can say they've heard the Dead do this cover...no one has commented one way or another yet. You can LOVE IT...you can HATE IT...but give it a shot before you judge...judge for yourself...that's the purest thing you can do and the best for your own life and love of music.
-Scott...a bit too much tequila tonight, but i speak from the heart!!!
Suck until you love Metallica. What a show.
The cover songs are typically fun, but they seem to have grown in frequency. I can remember in the GD dazes when if was a treat, but they were only pulled out maybe one or twice on a particular tour. Anyway as someone in the chat once said The Dead are the best Robert Hunter cover band ever!
Tonight's show was NOT GOOD -
the boys had fun playing nothing else matters. from where i was i could see they were enjoying it. three people by me turned their backs to the band and said they were boycotting the song- i asked them one question. Are'nt they entitled to have some fun and try different songs? they turned back around.
Venue first:
Jones Beach, as always, spectacular. Can't believe the weather cooperated and Bobby threw a WRS in anyway.
Nothing like sitting out in the real fresh air and hearing the boys play, especially after the flooded out debacle-fest that was Wednesday at PNC. The Dead could sell this place out for a week, and I'm guessing that's crossed their minds. The fresh air, the natural lighting, and the water all make for the perfect venue.
Got to be careful about security though, they don't mind getting in your face, and might even grab your bowl if they catch you smoking dope. Nassau has always been a little tough on the police side (see pix of cops on horses from my first show, 80 at Nassau Coliseum, on the "Go to Nassau" release.
Back in the day, it would be like the chosen cover of the year, such as the '92 baba o'reilly>tomorrow never knows combo they actually played about once every three or four shows!
Very good show. Help->Slip was the tightest yet most exploratory I've heard in years. Didn't personally care for the Metallica cover, but as Phil said, "We know that we have to 'bring it' when we play in NY and we can't just play that regular same ol' stuff." Clearly it's Warren's influence, but let's not forget that at the core of the Grateful Dead is their willingness and history of playing 'unexpected' covers; they've covered artists as diverse as Merle Hagard, Chuck Berry, the Beatles, Dylan, Irving Berlin, so throwing a Metallica tune into the mix is just them being them, 40 years later.
Rest of show was good overall, very jammy and spacy, not a "rocker." They got themselves into an incredible Unbroken jam (which Phil flubbed the opening lyric to, for the second time in as many years at Jones Beach), and it seemed like they had a hard time pulling themselves out of it and back into Slipknot->Franklin's. Jeff of all people pulled the band out of it with his keyboard riffs. When he heard what Jeff was doing Phil quickly turned around and started building on that, and the band soon followed.
Bid You Goodnight was short but good, Billy and Mickey walked on stage during the end and Warren got Billy to sing a bit (though he was kinda far from the mike), and I couldn't help myself from screaming out "LET JIMMY SING" But he hung back till they were done.
Finally, Drums was great. Billy and Mickey were having a blast together, and they were feeding off of eachother particularly intensely tonight. I've seen most of the shows of the tour (I'm working for Headcount), and tonight's Drums was one of the best!
NOTHING ELSE MATTERS
Words and Music by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich
Album: Metallica
Produced by: Bob Rock with Hetfield & Ulrich
Recorded at: One on One Studios, Los Angeles, CA
Release Date: August 13, 1991
So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
So close no matter how far
It couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know
So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No, nothing else matters
On to the songs.
Spacey Jam, very low key, perfect for getting a sense of the air, the crowd, the wonder of the whole scene. Can't believe it's not raining.
Couple of times, swore I could here Warren tweaking out Morning Dew, but ...
Sure enough, without most of the usual hints, the band turns it around and you just know it's gonna be ...
The Wheel!
Awesome start, crowd really into, you knew it was gonna be a special night. As with much of the first set, they really needed to turn Jimmy up louder, especially when he tries to get that pedal steel twangy going, such an essential element in many a fine Wheel. Nonetheless, a good time was had by all.
Nice jam into No More Do I. Done similar to that at Spac, but I was able to pick it up much earlier this time having heard it last week. Definitely my favorite tune off the PLQ album, great lyric and chords. But... they really need to crank the whole band for this one. Phil's got a good bass line going, but it needs a little more juice to make it pop. PLQ at the Beacon cranked it out much louder. Anyway, an excellent choice for #2 tune, perfect spot for this song.
Followed by the Mystic, Warren changes guitar, I thought it might be the 12 for 8 Miles High, glad it was Van Morrison instead, as it set a nice tone for the evening's meditations.
The venue is great -
I've had many good nights there-
Tonight wasn't one of them -
And looking around the only songs that everyone seemed to enjoy were Uncle John's and Franklin's -And I think people were only dancing to Franklin's because they came to dance.
I would trade Rob Barraco and John Molo for Bob, Billy, Mickey and that 'keyboard player' -
Or last year's lineup for that matter -
That band was FUN - this one is sad (as seen tonight - my first and only show this summer)
were there face value extras to be found? i want to go tomorrow!!!
metallica is ok but they really only rocked on ride the lightening, kill em all, and Justice for all, the new stuff bites!
and...bob rock sux
This show is great on paper. However, I cannot determine why this iteration of the band leaves me cold.
Set 1 Notes:
Wheel - I used to love this song in the 80's but am burnt on the versions by the various incarnations.
Into The Mystic - Jerry loved Van. (It Stoned Me, Bright Side of the Road, He Ain't Give You None, Crazy Love.) Warren sounded great but I wish they would insert a solo. One of two covers, 'One' being the other, that I really hoped to hear this leg of the tour.
Strange World - First time that I heard this song and thought that it was well played.
The Eleven> Jam> - Now we're cooking.
Weather Report Suite - Saw my first show 22 years ago this week and always wanted to see the complete WR Suite. The tone of Bobby's acoustic sounded terrible. No low to mid-range. The first two verses of Let it Grow were flubbed. (Those are teleprompters on the stage??)
Set 2:
Help On The Way - Bobby started singing during the intro. The band continued; Weir kept singing; and the band recovered.
Shakedown Street - More vocal flubs. The song was aborted during the jam. I thought that this was planned but since there was no reprise I guess they just gave up.
This is where the show truly started for me:
^Nothing Else Matters(WH) - I am not a Metallica fan but this cover was very well played. It was truly surreal to see Phil singing the harmony parts. Kudos for mixing it up.
Cryptical Envelopment>
The Other One - Nice Phil Bomb +Jeff on Hammond.
Weir gave everyone space between verses to explore.
Dark Star(v1)> I liked this but kept thinking about the monumental Star that I saw in 90 a couple of miles away.
Unbroken Chain> Jam - Well played. Phil in good voice.
Slipknot - Not sure if you can actually call this Slipknot since no one in the band was playing the riff at the same time and typical segue from Slip to Franklin's missing in favor of a cold start.
Franklin's Tower - Short. Phil & Bobby dueted throughout. Phil seemed to be trying to lock into eye contact w/ Bobby to get in synch on verses. Still a minor flub.
Side note: Really enjoyed Billy's playing throughout the evening.
All in all, a decent showing but I can't figure out why I am getting bored at times. 3/5 of PLQ are in thie band but little of the intensity.
I admire everyone in this incarnation. (Although I am critical of Weir - his playing style had a big influence on me when I started playing guitar as a kid.) Why was last year's incarnation such a difference? This is not meshing. Does anyone feel the same way?
I gave up my tix for tomorrow's show.
Gotta break these long ones up a bit, else I'll never lose my newbie status.
Didn't know much about Strange World, but enjoyed it quite a bit.
And then the Eleven. Band had a nice transition into this, crowd really got moving on it early, Warren seemed to enjoy the rhythm.
My wife was psyched as the jam ended, noodling, and then the first hints of UJB. Joan managed to bring my wife solidly into the fold for the first time last year, and UJB helps cement the relationship. We caught one at Spac, so to get one tonight was a double blessing. When I told my wife that Joan came out on Wednesday, her remark was "I have to go to all the shows". I'm sure most of us can vaguely recall the first time that thought every crossed their mind.
Finally the acoustic comes back out (also out for Mystic, I thought). What will it be ... hmm ...
and finally the first notes of WRS, very well done by Bobby indeed.
Let It Grow ... lots of fun, band does not yet groove yet like they did with Jerry, I remember times in the 80s dancing on the ceiling forever waiting for that 2nd "what shall we say" to come around, with that sound oh so like Branford ...
speaking of which, when are we gonna see that cat again, those were some fine times
I really have got to admit we had a stellar show,,,rain cleared just prior to showtime. It was interesting seeing Phil pull Bobby along at times though....It just needed to go on a bit more ,,,,,crowd finally really diggin in and a " We bid you goodnight" for the encore. Let's see what they pull out of their hats tomorrow.
Dave,,,I'll talk to you soon,,thanks for the heads up!!
AW-
I agree that there was a huge lack of energy -
In the band and then in the crowd -
Last year Jimmy did not sit in the spotlight-
Tonight when the video screen showed Phil, Bobby and Warren in the same shot it looked like they were trying to replace Jerry with Warren (a large man with long hair in black clothes who looks to be in questionable health)
When I see PLQ they are not trying to be the GD -
this band does and they fell very short tonight-
I heard old tapes playing in the parking lot that were sparkeling with energy - I felt none of it inside
Not sure why some people didn't enjoy the show.
I did notice that Bob jumped into 2 bars short of a full intro for Help on the Way. Band did recover nicely. There was at least one other place where Bobby lost the time, though nothing as critical as He's Gone at PNC.
Help > Slipknot was good, I thought they should have gone for Franklin's right there instead of reprising it just like they did at Darien Lakes. Would have given them enough time to do it properly, it was rushed due to fact that 11:30 was clearly a very hard curfew. imho, the band needs to start a half-hour earlier as they have been running out of time all this week, with Bobby having to parcel out leads like gold nuggets as the witching hour draws near.
> were there face value extras to be found? i want to go tomorrow!!!
There were so many extras I could hardly believe it - orchestra tickets were available at 7:15 for $40 - and not selling
I saw some going in with an extra ticket - he couldn't sell it for $10
Would have prefered they save Shakedown for tomorrow's opener as I like best at the top of the set. Help and Shakedown are two of the best openers (especially 2nd set), so it was a bit confusing to get 'em back to back.
Fine job on Shakedown Street, though, some really excellent jamming by both Jimmy and Warren, and band was turned up plenty loud. The ending was different, but I think it was planned. Since they had Metallica slow song lined up, they needed to shut it down hard, and I thought Bobby did an excellent job of landing this one. (The dude often does a great job.)
Didn't know the Metallica tune, but those in the audience who did were very pleased. A real slow tune, and an excellent job. Much nicer than another Stella or Dew, and good to have it before the Drums instead of after. Some nice lead guitar work in here too, with Jimmy doing most and Warren picking up the end. As someone up above said, I'm honored to be at the first (and maybe only) cover of this on this tour. Praise to the Dead for reaching out and finding a nice tune to complement the mix.
Phil starts sending out bombs, and before you know it, we're into Cryptical > The Other One. Good job keeping them together, it worked out better than at Spac, where they pulled up short and then had to struggle to do justice to the Other One after space.
An excellent version of the Other One, good energy, good jamming, good dancing in the crowd, people having fun.
Drums started at 10:33, suggesting to me
1) long drums
2) lots of time left for tunes
1) came true, not 2).
L.A. 495blues : you're on another planet - this was a really good show - not sure what you are expecting, but the improvisation is finally happening - if this particular unit tours again, it will be the tour to see
metallica has some things in common with the dead. They allow taping, they are from the bay area, and they, in the beginning anyway, were a fringe band that didn't give much of a shit what people thought-like the Dead. I think its great that the Dead are still willing to fuck with the fragile mental states of many a righteous deadhead. "they should do this, they should do that blah , blah, blah..." gat over yourselves. Don't like? Don't come back. Back to Mettalica-thaey probably should have done Sanitarium or Phantom lord. I love it when the boys are willing to 'fuck shit up' once in a while. It is arguably better than Queen Jane every other show. Even though I don't really care for that particular Metallica song-I would take it over Days Between any day.
Ditto - what Steve said
Almost done.
Best drums of the 7 I've seen this summer. Mickey and Bill were really into it and obviously had plenty of time to work it. Lots of rhythms changes, lots of big rolling thunder on the bottom shaking the place, a long spell by Mickey on the melodic drums, followed by a stellar session on the beam. Jimmy came out again for the beam and added some nice spacey melody, Mickey was laughing at himself as the beam vibrated on and he lost his rolling pin.
Jumbotrons really aided getting a look at what was going on. First venue where you could get a good look at the screens from in the orch.
Out Drums/Space and baBoom A happening Dark Star. Unfortunately, time cut this one to only 1 verse, I'd prefer we not get the rest tomorrow but ...
A superb Unbroken Chain followed. This song obviously benefits from the Q knowing it so well. Since I don't the lyrics, didn't catch the flubs. I will say that Phil was extremely pleased with the performance of this one, he was rocking back and forth real hard by the end, big grin on his face. The band hit all the changes and nuances perfectly. They were winding it down when all of a sudden Jeff starts up on the organ for his round of lead, Phil spins around and grins a big "excellent, dude" look in his smile.
Only one problem: just a minute earlier, he looked at the clock on stage, it was about 11:18 or so.
Everybody had to face the dilemna: Slipknot, Franklin's, donor rap and encore all to come in under 9 minutes... Yikes!
They did a good job, yeah the transition to Franklin's was a bit stilted, but they only had 45 seconds to get it done.
The verses in FT came fast and furious, with only enough time to jam one or 2 rounds before the next verse kicked off. Needed a little more breathing room to savor the verses, but it was made up for by Phil and Bobby harmonizing, excellent eye contact, good time.
Phil only waited about 20 second before coming back out, you knew that time was of the essence. Even WBYG was very brief, with no time for any of the verses (a la Continental w/ the Other Ones, or any of those classic Jerry Good Nights). After the 3rd pass, the band almost stopped until someone realized it was only 11:29:20, so they took 1 more round, bows, and lights on.
Great show, great time. I'd give it a 10 except for
1) not loud enough in set 1
2) not enough time to put the sparkling 2nd set over the top. Althea instead of Shakedown would have provided the margin.
9.3!
Days Between was pretty good, on a par with this Warren effort.
Definitely better to not hear it twice in 1 week.
As long as we're gonna get one Warren groaner in every second set, better that we have a little variety.
It's in their for us, the "frequent users". The 1 show a year people would happily here Stella or Dew every time.
Bob (Kacide)-
I do hope it was me and not them-
I tried to dance but I wasn't moved - I saw people standing in the stadium (some) but they weren't dancing either -
I wasn't expecting to see the GD, but I've seen so many good shows from PLQ and last year's Dead Tour (especially Red Rocks) that I was expecting to be entertained
So close to NYC and an 11:30 stop time, what a bitch. That 2nd set was so spacey and jammy - felt like old times. Drums was exceptional - what the heck is that beam thing?
So they have a 11:30 curfew? What is that due too? I'm still trying to see if the show will be over early enough to get me back to central NJ before the trains stop. Should I expect the same tomorrow (tonight)?
LA - lookk at the set lists from the past 2-3 weeks. Too much rockin. They and we needed a nice spacey break. Granted I thought the 1st set was pretty week except for UJB and an OK WRS but that second set was fine by me.
>>>>I agree that there was a huge lack of energy -
In the band and then in the crowd -
Well, the toughest crictic of all was there with Mrs B on a last minute decission with the help of Bob/Kacide (tickets bought tuesday) & I must say .......
BULLSH*T
Tonight was as close to PLQ in 2002/2003 or a 2002 TOO show got.
DAMN good, LOTS of energy.
Loads of good stuff, & except for probably cutting out vII of DS due to time constraints prior to the Sklipnot! 'reprise (keep in mind that they did a COMPLETE Slipknot! before Shakedown, end included), everything was completed & jammed out well.
I even remarked to Mrs B coming out of The Wheel, "I thought that was P&F for a minute there".
Sleepy, complete review to follow sometime in the next few days, but what the heck is the use of going tommorow?
Maybe a Dew, Viola or a 20 minute Dark Star reprise If we're lucky.
Whatever, IMHO, I'm playing with house $$ after tonight.
Send tapes to my e-mail, we'll work out a trade.
BTW: I'm curious to see what Sideshowbob says considering his constant slamming of the band in the past couple weeks - of which I would agree after seeing Hartford.....
Jimmy played nice outa drums into space...they had some struggles tonight but gave it their all...everyone has their moments of confusion and error, brilliance and precision. Saw 4 shows enjoyed all of the experience and am thankful for what we've got.
>>>>>the stage design is questionable.
looks like two half-erect wrinkled penises.
Nope.....
A guy next to me opointed this out to me in Hartford & I'd have to agree......
I's a copy of the Garcia solo album cover sans the glasses, of course fitted to work within the confines of the stage , lights & musicians.
Check it out.
It's Jerry.
heavy on the electric..
light on the kool-aid
ragin and so wasted I can barely see straight..
I just had to post in order to say that it was nasteeeeeee on the south shore tonight..
Cryptical may well have been the finest thing of ever seen.....really...Phil just talking to us like Jerry used to do
the other one was evil and savage
And when the day had ended
With rainbow colours blended
His mind remained unbended
He had to die
You know he had to die
You know he had to die
sooooooooooooooooooooooo
fucking nice seeing youzzze zoners until the heat came on by and harshed us out
Just got home thanks to a ride from some friendly Bronx heads, and I can't sleep.
Very exploratory show this evening.
Set One
A spacy jam started off the evening with early hints of the Wheel, which was standard. Towards they end they changed tempos and were so jamming on No More Do I, which had a VERY funky intro and solo section. Into the Mystic was nice to hear again, and Strange World was a first for me. The latter had a nice guitar solo from Warren.
So far, so good.
All of a sudden they dropped into the Eleven, which went along nicely for a while and then side-stepped into a dark jam that went to some truly incredible places. At one point Phil and the drummers were playing in differetn time signitures, propelling the jam into truly otherworldly places. The band was jamming as a collective unit without a lot of excessive soloing, as they would throughout much of the evening. If this isn't the ZONE, than I don't know what is.
They continued on to jam nicely into Uncle John's Band, which contained some great playing, though the vocals were a little rough, particularly from Weir, whose singing was kind of flat all night. The jam segment rode the fire of the previous tune and was a crowd pleaser. The ending was a little weak
Finally a rest!
Weather Report Suite started out a little confused, at one point dipping briefly into Loks Like Rain territory before Weir finally began to sing Part 1. This version was somewhat marred by Bobby's acoustic tone, which was harsh and cutting. Things picked up some during Let it Grow, which had its hot momments.
Set Two
Started of strong with a very forceful band version of Help>Slip! Again, not a lot soloing, just strong team playing. Slipknot! ended with a few second pause, a little too long for Franklin's.
Then all of a sudden they gave way to the familiar boom of Shakedown Street. Shakedown might have been the high pont of the evening. My God! This band can be damn funky! Really nice jams here folks. Great work in the middle from Jimmy and more at the end from Warren. The ending was kind of messed up, almost like they could barelyfind anymore energy to crank it out.
"Hmm a new solo song by Warren," I said, but soon I was holding my devil horns up towards the sky. I'm not going to get into wether or not the Dead should be covering Metallica (or Floyd or the Eagles for that matter), but they did a pretty good job of deadifying Nothing Else Matters. Neither Jimmy nor Warren seemed to want to rip it, so they each took short anticlimactic solos.
And then we are off into Cryptical and than a grinding and ferocious version of the Other One. This tune explored many variations on the theme before Phil dropped a modest bomb. Bobby did that verse spacing shit that doen't always come off too well, but the instrumentals went to some places that I'd never heard the Other One go before. Jeff's B-3 work here and elsewhere was right on the money and at one point Jimmy really took it to the next level (not that he wasn't doing that frequently throughput the night).
The jam broke down very nicely into a long drums with three or four distinct sections. One included some melodic Asian instruments. Eventually Billy left the stage and Jimmy strapped on his guitar and played searing feedback against Mickey's beam work.
Mickey left the stage and Bobby and Phil, then Jeff and Warren slowly came on. Space got so melodic that it could have morphed into quite a few songs if only the drummers had been around. Dark Star was teased stongly, as it had been a few times earlier during the evening. Finally it looked as though they were about to go into it, but still the stage was drummerless. Out of nowhere, Billy and Mickey hop on their kits and in less than a second the band is playing Dark Star.
Dark Star, like many of the versions from this band, did not stray far from the pre-verse jam. The lone verse was sang well by Phil, Warren and Bobby. On the whole, this Star felt forced. It came to a complete, but not clunky, stop before the next tune.
Unbroken Chain found Phil in fine voice. The interior jam was pretty tight. After the closing vocals, the song nearly stopped but then Warren took a solo over what sounded like the changes to No More Do I again.
After this, this jam started to lose focus. Phil was trying desparatley to bring the band back around to Dark Star, but the drummers wanted to jam on the Other One some more, and Jimmy seemed interested in going more in a Sllipknot! direction. Needless to say, After two or three Dark Star atempts and than two more Slipknot atempts by Phil, it seemed clear the band was lost. This jam wasn't terrible but it lacked the fire of the playing earlier on in the evening.
They finally played what I would call a Slipknot! Jam and then went into Franklin's Tower smoothly. It was well played and contained some nice solos. The second set may have gone a little astray, but they ended it well.
When they came back from the encore break, Phil commented on how a New York audience forced the band to play more adventurously and that we took more energy out of them than they had to give.
The encore was a sweetly sung Goodnight with the whole band on stage, arm in arm, grinning from ear to ear. Many hugs were exchanged and the band was off.
There is it is...as best as I can remember anyway.
Overall, I thought it was a very fine show, with lots of interesting jamming, some good segues, decent vocals and an incredible song selection. Phil in particular was enjoying himself up on stage, and the band chemistry was strong. Of course its not the same as with Jerry (duh!), but this band is worth it, and they have nowhere to go but up (hopefully).
A very, very solid B.
Over and Out
>>>>>gat over yourselves. Don't like? Don't come back. Back to Mettalica<<<<<
ez steve, that is the first time that the dead has ventured into heavey metalsville and it's gonna take some time to digest. I never heard that whole song but my nephew gives it thumbs up, so I'm willing to give it a try. I'm not sure what I would have done had I been riding the mighty high on that evening. I would think that's more for a mule set, but maybe it works ?
the older ya get the least likely you are to adapt to change, except underwear.
i heard the grateful dead delve nito heavy metal during New Year's Eve 1983-84
Wow,I am surprized that they only played till 11:30,I know when I saw PLQ there in 01 they played till midnight, with a Midnight Hour encore ta boot !
there are about 100 metallica songs that are better than "nothing else matters". however, i can hardly comprehend them playing any other metallica song.
either way, for the time being, i am not on board with this.
Btw if ya think this stage seeting is ridiculous last years looked like a friggin siegfried and roy set.
I can't fucking wait to hear this one. I don't care about a few lyric flubs. That's par for the course. The setlist is unfuckingbelievable.
BTW I like the backdrop too. I always thought it looked like some sort of water / melting metal thing. It's cool with the lights too.
last night was an awesome show, best of the six I've seen so far this summer, better even than the friday at mansfield. excellent job on shakedown and the other one jam was brillants. best drums of the summer, too. seemed to have more (better) jamming than previous shows this year,
hats off to the band for playing "nothing else matters" I didn't know it was a metallica song and if somebody hadn't told me, i still would have thought they did a nice job. it's a cool song.
As for the vocal flubs - so freakin what. If the choice is a messed line or two (most of which i didn't notice) or them playing the same 15 songs every night, i think the answer is pretty clear.
awesome show, awesome show. it was right on.
>>imho, the band needs to start a half-hour earlier as they have been running out of time all this week, with Bobby having to parcel out leads like gold nuggets as the witching hour draws near.
the problem is that they are trying to do TOO much in the time allotted...
for instance, in Mansfield, they did a nice China Cat only to cut the ending jam out and make a 10 minute Rider fit into 4 minutes. in instances like this, they could just cut out songs altogether: like just jam out the China Cat to end the show...
last night, they could have left the Franklin's out and jam out the UBC to end the show, or go back into DS, do the 2nd verse and end it...
they make these setlists with too many songs to play, and with all the jamming they want to do, they get short on time and are rushing to finish the set off .. it hasnt been working all tour...
The light show is right out of 1969 though when the swirling oil is put up there - i love it
and bucky didn't talk shit. Show musta been O.K
Taperrob - exactly what I was thinking about friday mansfield
after the show, though I was thinking they should have just dropped the mountains of the moon and gone in china cat out of drums for a good long jam out
If they had done that, the whole second set would have been a string of the core medleys over the years
I gotta run, gotta go get soaked........
I have a wild idea or two if the band wants to play the WHOLE setlist & not run out of time:
1. Cut down the break.
2. Cut Warren out.
3. Cut out the drums night after night after night.
BTW, Thanks to Taperrob for helping save the fire.
Firstly, I definately I agree with Rob. Running up against the curfew multiple times in the last couple of weeks has been a bummer. I think they DO need to start earlier. It seems like they want to keep playing, but run out of time.
I do want to say, I thought last night was easily the best of the 5 shows I have seen. Sure, Bob (and Phil) fucked up some lyrics a few times and they blew a couple of jams, but, overall, much, much better then Boston, PNC or SPAC. The sound was better and louder; I could actually feel Phil, not just hear Phil; this is the first show I could hear Jeff for the whole show and not just little bits; and of course the scene and the venue are great. If you haven't been to Jones Beach, go, it's a great venue. And of course, it stopped raining right at showtime!
Highlights:
Very good Eleven..Bob did ALL of the verses (at the end of the tune he went back and did all of the verses...Eight sided, seven faced...three girls, etc...) this is the first time I've heard the Dead or any offshoot do all the verses. Good jamming into a pretty good UJB and then Weather Report.
2nd Set:
Great Shakedown, Nothing Else Matters was pretty cool, although, I'm not sure why they chose to cover that song out of all the songs out there to cover. Great Unbroken and a really great Bid You Goodnight. Franklin's to close was rushed as Rob pointed out. They just don't leave themselves enough time to finish the show strong. Overall though, a very good show and great time.
Last night's show was an A. The song choices and performances were excellent. The crowd was cool. They played til 12:10+ by my watch.
Jones Beach is one of the best outdoor venues that I've ever been to. I'm so happy I'm going again tonight.
I don't understand why people go to live music (especially a band like the Dead) if all they want is repetitions of previous experiences.
The pics Rob posted were my first glimpse of Jones Beach stage with crowd in foreground..
Pretty cool looking..nice to get the visuals to go with the years of comments bout place I have read here..
Also..Nice reviewing as usual..thanks people..
Bucky..did sumthing happen you see a bit less "edgey" here.?.
..cool..
The stage set IS Jerry's hair as it is represented on the cover art of the "Reflections" album, sans his face. My girl noticed it at Colombia Meadows and was happy to hear some others have noticed this visual. "It's a smile on empty space", filled by the band.
we had an incredible time last night...
i'm trying to summon up the energy for tonight...
hope the rain holds off.
did anyone see the "baby changing station" sticker
on the beam? funny stuff...
The beam is pregnant..
Yes - that's new this year - I love it.
In fact, I pointed it out the 45ish dancing mom next to me (who was there with dad and teenage daughter) - and she said "yes, it changes them before they are born..."
the break in between sets seemed longer last night than wed and wed seemed longer than tue.
> Very good Eleven..Bob did ALL of the verses (at the end of the tune he went back and did all of the verses...Eight sided, seven faced...three girls, etc...) this is the first time I've heard the Dead or any offshoot do all the verses
Yes, they are doing ALL of the verses for the Eleven - its cool.
They sang all of the verses at the Friday night Great Woods show too.
I remember an interview years ago where Jerry was asked if the Dead would ever do The Eleven again, and his answer was, No, it is just too hard to sing those verses correctly
Heck, the Grateful Dead didn't even do all the verses on Live/Dead - it is very cool to hear them all.
The line I particularly like is"
"Now is the time of returning
With our thought jewels polished and gleaming"
For those of you asking about x-tras for tonight, it looks like I'll have 2 good seats. Section 4R row AA seats 9&10. Email me at ABBboy@aol.com. I am in Weehawken, NJ, literally 2min from Lincoln Tunnel, or a 10min bus ride from Port Auth. $100 for the pair which is less than face and less service/shipping charges.
What a great show. Much better than the Tuesday night show at PNC. The rain did leave us soggy in the lot but ended just in time.
My girlfriend got me VIP tickets for the show and it was a first for me. Pretty cool experience with the parking and drinking at Jones. It was weird watching the show and drinking a beer at this venue.
My impression was we got a lot more Phil tonight. I felt that he was more in control of things.
Jimmy still needs to be turned up major. Heard rumors that he's out at the year's end. If it is true he will be missed.
Going to tonights show and can't wait. Bring raingear.
Matty
Bucky approved; nothing else matters.
> Heard rumors that he's out at the year's end.
I doubt that very much. He plays the signature licks on all of the Jerry tunes - at Phil's direct request - so I'd be very surprised if he disappeared
I wouldn't be surprised to see him out of the Phil Lesh and Friends band, though.
I cant wait to hear this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, found a public library here on 'Gisland for a quick drop-in and review - gotta say last night was THE SHOW I'D BEEN WAITING FOR!!!!!! - I could tell from the very first notes of the 1st set (jamming Playin' Reprise by the way which no one mentioned) that this show was DRIPPING WITH PSYCHEDELIC INTENSITY - EVERYTHING was way "over the top" exploratory and off the wall - so of course I was the ONLY ONE totally getting off on this show - this ALWAYS happens to me - @ the shows I don't like, everyone LOVES it, at a show like last night, everyone I talked to was indifferent or wishing they were at Phish (I mean, c'mon!). A first for me was being mocked by a pair of New Yawk guido rockheads in black tank tops as I was totally getting off on the crazy Dark Star jamming - only on Long Island! Oh, we showed up @ the box office @ 5 pm to check tix locations and they were playing the Metallica song for the soundcheck (then did Cryptical twice) so I knew it was coming, but at the time didn't remember whose song it was (me not a commercial radio listener and consider any '90's Metallica to be commercial schwag) - dug Warren's version anyway and was amused TD was covering Metallica - "The Wheel Is Turning". A sidenote - I "got off" (heh, heh) extremely HARD at this show - quite unexpectedly, too - this morning the #4 special on the diner menu was "Mescaline Chicken Salad" - NOOOO, NOT ANYMORE - man did it screw up my stomach! Quite the show to be "off" at for me! Haven't slept even a minute since last night but well worth it - last weekend of tour for me who needs sleep! Then we get back to the hotel parking garage (Quality Inn Hempstead THE PLACE TO STAY!!!!) and there's a raging party complete with BOSE sound system cranking the Alpine Valley show and a whippet tank! This must be heaven! About two dozen of us and we gave the tank vendors a few 20's and they let us kill the tank! Woo F-in' Hoo! So to recap this rambling scattered post, the show was all that I wanted after the last several disappointing shows and I got WAY off, so let that be a lesson to me to quit whining and HAVE FUN!!! Of course when I do EVERYONE ELSE is whining - one guy even complained about the lack of a 'Sailor-'Saint - well, I think were gonna pay DEARLY tonight for last night - we shall see - maybe the pouring rain will make them play good (well it didn't post-drums Friday Red Rox). That's really FUNNY that Bucky went last night - dude, you picked the right show - honestly, if you had been to any of the 3 previous shows, you woulda booed! (And I heard quite a few boos in the crowd when Joan walked out on stage @ PNC!). Ok, here's one BLOWN AWAY Mofo signing off . . .
>>I wouldn't be surprised to see him out of the Phil Lesh and Friends band, though.
Why?
Great show. first off, I noticed the lot was short a whole bunch of familiar wooks, coventry calling I guess. tickets everywhere, with really no effort at all, I scored a 20 dollar ticket within minutes of getting to JB.
first set was cool, I dug the wheel opener. and no more do I is a great song, IMO. Into the mystic was cool, I'd never seen them do this. strange world, whatever, I could take or leave this song. The 11 was great, I was definitely looking forward to hearing this one. UJB was also good, one thing I noticed was at the end they did the da-da-da-da-da-da harmonies ala the studio version. I don't recall hearing this during the UJB in (I believe?) camden. when bob put on his acoustic, I was hoping for the weather report> lte it grow. I wasn't disappointed.
For the second set, help>slip>shakedown was a sweet opener. I was rocking out in a big way. Nothing else matters was an interesting call. I was gald to have caught it. lots of people bitching about them doing a metallica song, but whatever, as long as they don't play it every other show, it's sweet to hear! and honestly, at the end of this song they had a sweet, slow jam. during this is when phil really stepped it up. I could feel his bass vibrating my whole body. Cryptical was fucking awesome. I loved every minute of it. Other One had a serious bomb to start it off. just what the doctor ordered!! drums/space was good and long. Dark Star coming out of space worked much better for me than all the slow Jerry balads they've been coming out of space with. Unbroken was music to my ears. definitely one of the highlights of the 7 shows I've gone to so far. phil sounded awesome, he was having a great time. the following slipknot though, was the low point. they just could sync up to nail it. they just went into franklin's. Bid you Goodnight was a nice, mellow encore.
Another great show I was lucky to be at. Looking forward to one more tonight! after that, I think I may need to check into the betty ford clinic.
Anyone but Metallica.

Lemme add too that this venue is extra special, due to it's layout, location, and that there's NO ALCOHOL SERVED!!!!! They get the exceptional privilege to play a wild crazy show like that in a place like this - to me a VERY SPECIAL ONE OF A KIND SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE - too bad this is lost on so many others - as much as I got off, I did feel a kind of despairing loneliness, feeling like I was the only one there who truly KNEW what a special night this was - one in which my brain cells have been permanently altered! Another funny one - the girl behind me, who seemed to be the only person around me even moderately enjoying the wild jamming into Franklin's, says to me "They're gonna SLIP into FRANKLIN'S" - I had to congratulate her on the well-timed pun! - although in my altered state it took a moment for me to "get it"!!! And I'll reiterate that it was still worth wading through the previous 3 shows in order to get a show like last night - despite all my whining - that's why I HAVE to see a bunch in a row - this reminds me of the early '80's, when all the good stuff was played in 1 show preceded by 3 or 4 nights of indifference - recall 12/5/81 - Bucky was there and KNOWS of what I speak . . .
one more thing I meant to add:
NO MICKEY SONG LAST NIGHT!! WOOO-HOOO!!
This was the best show i've seen this tour...i've seen 7...tomorrow will make 8
both mansfield, spac, hartford, camden 2nd only, holmdel 2nd only, last night makes 7, and tonight 8
my seat was great...t-rob must have taken that above picture during the wheel right from my seat...because that was the exact view i had...i hope i never sit anywhere else again
i love this venue...the open air...the water...the stars
the canvas lights have been absolutely out of this world this tour...and for some reason...last night just seemed so much more intense...that stage just looked incredible
the sound was fantastic from where i sat...often this makes all the difference on how a show effects me...good seats good show...bad seats bad show
i'm not going to do an indepth review...right now anyway...but i will say that the set list was perfect...there were no out of place bob tunes...and the energy was great...everyone played hard and enjoyed...i could feel the inspiration flowing
this was the best show i've seen all tour
tapemasterrob,
seems like the venues are the enemy here, with the really high ticket prices, why cant some of the profits go to pay some fines to play as late as a rock and roll band should play, until the show is over.
ill pay one dollar more to chip in
see you all charlotte>Atlanta,
anyone have info on the charlotte venue?
it's always better when the "Light" is turned on.
stangest of places if you look at it right.
glad you had fun sideshow. the tank is always iceing on the cake.
Wow- is it me? Or are you folks real easily entertained? I thought that the show was not so happenin': Three guitarists was one too many- sounded heavy and cluttered as well as unfocused (whose turn is it to blow now?); I heard some-ummm..."creative harmonizations" or really bad chords during the intro to Weather Report Suite; vocal mishaps by bob and phil on Help On The Way and Unbroken Chain; and the WORST TRAINWRECK I've heard in 26 years of Dead shows during the end of Shakedown. Sorry to whine like this but- what has become of us? I'm trying to remain open-minded but- I MISS JERRY!!!
The longer he's been gone- the more I miss him...
>>>really bad chords during the intro to Weather Report Suite.
I've seen WRS 3 times now - Bob shines here on the acoustic.
>>>>Bucky..did sumthing happen you see a bit less "edgey" here.?.
..cool..
Wisdom?
BTW, Wait until you here my review of tronight's (SAT) show.......
But it's late, horrible drive in the rain home & I must try to get through this before crashing so I will naturally start with THE show before attempting saturday.....
First Set:
As Sideshow Bob said, a short 2 minute jam, I thought for sure it was going to be a Playin' Reprise, then The Wheel hit me upside my head. Mrs B, who picked the correct night to go, lol, said she thought Wheel all the way.
The jam out caught me up & I swear I thought I was at a PLQ show & told her that, then I heard No More Do I coming a mile away.
Hey, maybe it IS a P&F show......
Pretty standard version.
Into The Mystic means into the bathroom & I maintained the tradition........
Strange World is one of those songs that I - and even moreso Keyshawn - see on the setlist & hate, but it was well played, they're jamming out of it, and, BAM! The Eleven. Now, The 11 was not maybe as long as a P&F version, but - ATTENTION NAYSAYERS!!! - the fact is PLQ versions haven't been a match for P&F versions since 2002. Check out a 2001 or 2000 show versus 2002 or 2003 if you doubt me.
But, as I told my wife, "A starving man doesn't complain that a slice of Prime Rib is too small", & I enjoyed this 11 as always. Bob's cheesey way of singing the lyrics twice actually allows the guitarists to play that heavy rythym longer & that's fine by me.
The jam out was the vintage 'tear it up' end of The 11, then into a touch of what I thought might be Phil starting Music Never Stopped, then a bit more Playin' Reprise, which is always a fine line with UJB, which is what we got. A pretty standard version here too, which means good lightning fast leads from Jimmy.
Then, another WRS > Let It Grow for me this tour.
Damn.
Y'all wouldn't know this as PLQ never did Let It Grow, but I put Let It Grow up there with all the biggies I love to see live. When I used to go see the GD alot in the early 80's, it was my 2nd favorite tune to hear (that they played) after TOO. Like St Stephen, They can play it every night.
This one was better than Hartrford IMHO.
Jimmy tearing up the instrumental, then he takes it down, Phil leads them into a cool bass driven 2nd portion of the jam, then the obligatory 'Dunt Dunt Dunt' part Bob's been doing since 1980. Even that was inspired, then back into the last verse Bob sings, they do a very short jam at the end & call it a set.
All told, a good set with a great ending, Let It Grow being the highlight, and the biggest difference between this show & Hartford is I've noticed all set both Jeff & Phil seem alive & involved, plus I can hear them playing.
Now, it's break time, & as I too heard the soundcheck, I'm waiting for The Other One.......
A day late and a set short..
Ha
2nd Set:
Getting sleepy, so quickly......
Help started out of nothing, a surprise as we were expecting Shakedown.
A good Slipknot! followed. At one point, it 'noodled down' a bit & I thought they'd leave Slipknot behind & go elsewhere, but they finished it.
It was a great start, I mean who doesn't love the spacejam that is Slipknot!? I know, Dewit.....
Anyhow, if she was there, her show from hell was just getting started.....
The end of Slipknot! brought a very rough transition into Shakedown.
Honestly, ANYTHING except Franklin's Tower is a rough transition.
Shakedown was a decent version, pretty short compared to Hartford, with no "Shake It down down" part. It reminded me of a PLQ version the dwindles out of the funky jam at end quickly, in this case finding it's way to that Metallica song which I too had heard in the soundcheck but purposely avoided listening to too much of - I figured I would rather hear it for the first time in the show.
It was good.
Structured like a slow Jerry balled ala Stella, but at a somewhat faster tempo, Warren taking a solo in the middle & another one on the jam out which went into Cryptical.
The jam out of Crpytical stayed in the Cryptical theme for 30-45 seconds before becoming The Other One,
They jammed a couple minutes on the intro, the Phil hit a HUGE 'rumble' to open the song proper. I was afraid Bobby would step right up to the mic & start singing, thus eliminating the 1st instrumental (like SPAC 2003), but he let the boys jam a few minutes before starting the verse.
When Bob sang, he hesitated so much, he threw off all the people around me who were singing all night, very funny as they kept singing the same line 2 or 3 times & Bob didn't.
The 2nd instrumental was longer, I guess around 5 minutes. They started to bring it down low & I was thinking they might go into the drums & finish the 2nd verse post drums, but they brought it back around in a circle & finished it up, sang the verse, did a very short spacey noodle & drums.
Drums were drums, nothing I recall being great.
Space, I felt, like I couldn't care what they did, I was already happy.
So, space was good, nothing outstanding, then out of nowhere, phil starts Dark Star. Probably 3-4 minutes until they sing the verse, another 6-8 until a great UBC, just like PLQ except I think the jam in the middle was shorter, without each guitarist taking a lead (I think it was all Jimmy, but I may be wrong). Then Warren does the jam out, they finish UBC, head towards Dark Star, it's gone, Slipknot! is there instead, the theme, then a jam which goes a few minutes but doesn't go back to the Slipknot! theme but into Franklin's out of the jam.
I see people complained about the lwength of Franklin's, but time some 'Q' versiions. Warfield 2003 comes to mind......
My choice would be that if they were short of time, why go back into a song you've allready completed (Slipknot!) & not finish one you're about to go back into (Dark Star)?
Anbyhow, I'm falling asleep here.
BIG show, dare I say epic?
Whatever.
I'm glad we went.
As for Saturday, good playing, some really ggod moments, some not so good, but it lacked the magic of Friday.
HOWEVER, if GOTV 2002 tought me anything, it's that more people will like saturday than friday...........
>>if GOTV 2002 tought me anything..
GOTV = Gathering Of The Vibes a festival in New York state put on by Terrapin Presents that Phil and Friends played at 2 nights..July 5-6, 2002..
There also was a GOTV in 2003 and 2004..
>>>^Nothing Else Matters(WH)>
Tell me they are not covering Metallica now
>>> Clearly it's Warren's influence
Sorry dude, the birdie says this was Phil's idea)
I cannot believe all this crap about this tune.
A good song is a good song, and it doesn't matter who the hell wrote it. God bless a band that looks beyond their fans' box.
This tune, which I don't think I had ever heard before was a jawdropping, stunning, perfected confection from beginning to end. Jeff was wonderful (and he has done nothing for me since he became part of this, Phil was melodiously joyous, Jimmy was incredibly inspiring, the joining of Bobby and Warren's vocals is nothing short of one of the best pairings EVER within this rock and roll world. I said it a few years back, and I haven't stopped. The drummers weren't going so slow the train was in reverse.
This was stellar musicianship, across the board, and my personal pick for best musical perfomance of the summer. This song was clearly chosen by the band to play because it is a beautiful song, and one that each member was able to contribute to wholly.
The biased should take a lesson from the minstrels...get beyond the box. Time's awasting..
The Eleven/UJB was the train in reverse. A snooze and a half. Argghh.
This show, for me, the best yet, followed by PNC's first evening.
To the wonderful friends we were able to spend some quality time with, it was enormous emotionally for us to see y'all. Thanks for being the wonderful people you all are.
I agree with Bucky. Friday night was a great show for what they have been playin. No real clunkers this show. The weather held out all.
Big fan of Let It Grow - and that was my first WRS prelude.
Phil definitely was keeping an eye on Bobby during Franklin's.
The jam out of UBC was smokin' hot. Of course Jimmy can play any 1973 Dead like nobody's business because of the Jazz is Dead work that he did.
Thought it was a strong show and left me with the idea that it would be tough to top on Saturday night.
Just getting back from Long Island.
I couldn't wait to see what everyone had to say about these shows.
Friday night was, for the most part, awesome. Very spacey. Sure there were a couple of trainwreck endings (Shakedown and a least one other), but overall, I thought the show was awesome.
I can't believe people are complaining about Nothing Else Matters. It was friggin great. I personally had no idea what song it was (I thought it was a new song !!!), but it flat out kicked ass. I've seen 250+ shows since Sept 1973 Wall of Sound at Philly Spectrum, and for this Deadhead, I'll take that kind of music all day long.
What I'll take less of is Warren singing certain Jerry tunes, like Days Between, etc. Not that I dislike Warren, actually, I think he's great. Its just that for me, his voice doesn't fit certain songs. I'd much rather hear Phil sing. But thats me !!!
I haven't yet read the reviews for last night, but for me Friday was the better show, although there were a few gems Sat nite.
What a kind venue. State Park Police very aggressive outside the venue. Once inside, you could do whatever you wanted wherever you wanted (except purchase alcohol unless you were in the VIP area). By the way, I can't believe how many people (who obviously had great seats) never left the VIP area. What a waste of a good seat. Only on Long Island !!!
That VIP thing where only certain people get to drink alcohol is wierd..
That just don;t fly IMO..
YUK..such disticntions inside a GD show seem so..
so...
wierd..
The Dead covering Metallica is a cool thing in my opinion I wish they would do more of that kinda thing.
>>>>>. Althea instead of Shakedown would have provided the margin.
All that would've provided was a too early bathroom break.
St Stephen there, then you'd have something.
You'll never lose your newbie staus like that, Chinacat2002... ;)

Good sho fo shur. Worth another listen. Jones Beach is a great venue.
On the way out I was thinking Bucky and Sideshow would have enjoyed. Glad to see they did.
Deringer...all I can say is that Days Between sucks, always did, always will in my opinion, and thank god Warren got assigned that drivel and we no longer have to cringe (wow, all three times) when Phil sang it.
You have a decent resume, but, hey, it doesn't matter around here. Some of the most dead on opinions I have read belong to the babies (that is all of you under 30 lol)that post in this forum.
This is not The Dead, this is a very well oiled machine, that needs to upgrade it's drumming, but other than that, they pretty much got it. They seem to excel at the forgotten, long shelved nugs and the break outs. If you got the gas on the new, dump the goddamned been there, done that stuffy stuff and move on. Time is marching on and this band's founders have marched with it.
'aint no time to hate, barely time to wait'
Regardless of how Nothing Else Matters sounded, I have to think it was a statement. ( I hope) Metallica is the opposite end of the spectrum to the Dead. The Dead wants to share its music and have people hear and enjoy. Metallica wants money. Yeah, yah, ya, we all need money, but Metallica has enough. The positive is now Metallica music is out in space and they wont be getting the profit from it. My personal opinion it was the lowlight of the show, Saturday was way better. But I gotta admit, it caused quite the discussion, which was maybe why it was done.
personally I enjoyed that "sober" show ImMeNnSLEy
Big Phil night to remember, two especially cosmic personal moments were the orangey pink clouds appearing in the west at beginning of No More Do I and the coastguard boats' search lights casting out in the harbor during Dark Star
really big shoe, good times with great folk
nothing else matters
*tho I STILL woulda kinda preferred Warren taking lead vocals on Shakedown*
also found the choice of Floyd's Money on the PA as the lights came up a tad ironic ;)
Dewit - I agree - Days Between sucks !! Always has; always will.
I am curious - why do you say the drumming needs an upgrade ?? For me, they simply need to take away Mickey's microphone.
Almost 8,000 posts - I am truly impressed.
Hi All ,
First time post - veteran of 17 years of east coast DEAD JGB O1's PLQ etc.
1st-I love the philzone been reading it faithfuly for a long time.
THANK YOU TAPER ROB !!!!!(and everyone else who works on this site just as much!)
I know that YOU know how much we as a community obsessively love to get the pics and set lists so quickly! Many , Many Thanks o you all.
2nd This Jones beach Show - while I freely aknowledge some of Bob's flubs is one of the best I've seen in 10 years. (4th show of the tour for me)
I was completely , purposely sober (except for a couple (4 max) joint hits all show)
I don't understand how some people can say this was a poor performance.
NEM cover was a stunner but played with real emotion in a sweet way. Don't judge it by preconcieved notions until you hear it. I AM NOT/NEVER HAVE BEEN Metalica fan - but the song was perfect.
WRS started out of tune but progressed beautifuly - a great show
Highlights of the show for me, definitely
"Nothing else matters" and "Shakedown".
A long time ago, I heard this Metallica song and was transfixed by the tune. One of the things I used to SO LOVE about the Grateful Dead was the "steal your face-ability"of certain moments. Pulling out a surprise, and letting the chips land where they may!
When i heard the opening bars of the song, I turned to Jmoore and said, "Dang, that sounds just like that Metallica song!" and lo and behold, the music opened up and they laid the lush tune down. For me, it was multi-layered, sensual, and reaching. It prompted the dancing to just flow from my toes up outta my finger tips.
This last tour has had some beautiful moments, and some duds, of course. This tune, and the version of Shakedown I heard were some of the goodies.
Second set was good for me.
THIS WAS THE BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN!
I never had the chance to see the Big Man so I am only referring to post J.G., However I have seen several shows of every incarnation of every tour beginning with the 1996 Furthur (funeral) Festival. I was at the Stabler Show in November 01, The Other Ones in 98..I've seen it all since 96.
This was a birthday show for me and I love Jones Beach so I will say I was in exceptionally good spirits for this one.
Heard Billy on Q104 around 6:30 before the show which was awesome, anyway he said the Metallica was for Phil's oldest son who is a huge Metallica fan.
My wife and I were discussing after what was a dissappointing weekend in Camden that we may have seen the best music we have ever seen. (Especially in regards to how magical Camden was last summer)
This was my 6th show of the tour and I definitely had mixed feelings going into this one. Wednesday Night in Holmdel turned me around on these guys in a positive way and this show BLEW EVERYTHING ELSE OUT OF THE WATER!
At the start of UJB I knew that everything before was appetizer and that we were about to hit the accelerator. Awesome UJB (better than Camden which may had been the best version I have seen) and an appropriately nice WRS in it's entirety.
When the 2nd set started with Help on the Way I was in Heaven...I am so proud of One From the vault which was recorded 20 minutes after I was born 8-13-75 and started the same way. I have been waiting for 5 shows to hear Shakedown so I shook it down.
I was ready for the Metallica after hearing Billy talk about it on the radio and i thought they did a great job on it. I actually thought back to being in music college and thinking "Metallica in the style of the Grateful Dead"-which it was.
Cryptical was so great to hear-felt like it has been years and to eg it into the Other One-exactyl what I had been waiting for! The jam out of Drums/Space was incredible with Jimmy, Phil and Bobby getting things going before Jeff and Warren jumped in and the drummers came in to give us DARKSTAR! I think this may6 hve been the best version of Darkstar I have ever heard-although I would have liked them to finish it I would much rathe rhave the version we had than to have them flub lines like they normally do.
Unbroken Chain is my wedding song and we really missed it at Camden. Always great to hear and i thought it was hilarious that Phil flibbed the opening line.
Franklin's was short and easy but we knew it had to be and the encore with Billy and Mickey and everyone coming out just sealed the truly magical night.
Phil is definitely in charge and rightely so. I actually think he set up such a great groove and was so into it that that is why he blew the opening lines of Unbroken Chain.
Anyway although some of the shows have left me "concerned" this one blew me away (I only wish Saturday was as good). I don;t think they could play a show of this caliber everynight and I think if you were there you should be thankful...I am

Ummmmmm.... ok
