watch out for the state park police cruising around the lot hassling people for drinking beers - even when they're drinking them out of a plastic cup

nice place once inside, the water next to stage is cool. but don't forget - there's no roof if it rains

Thanks for the tips. I'll bring my poncho. From last nights posts, should I assume another 11:30 curfew? Will I make the last train from Penn @ 1:41? Or will I have to kill some a few hours in NYC before an early morning train?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Ferko (Ferko) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 02:01 pm: Edit Post

what time did the show start last night? If there's an early curfew the band might kick off early-ish and I don't want to miss a note....(missed all of Jack Straw at Great Woods and spent the whole first set thinking they opened with Dark Star...)

For those of you asking about x-tras for tonight, it looks like I'll have 2 good seats. Section 4R row AA seats 9&10. Email me at ABBboy@aol.com. I am in Weehawken, NJ, literally 2min from Lincoln Tunnel, or a 10min bus ride from Port Auth. $100 for the pair which is less than face and less service/shipping charges.

Maybe Dark Star V2 or a Shakedown reprise tonight? St. Stephen?

my predictions:

Set 1:
8 Miles High
Easy Wind
Sugar Magnolia to close Set 1

Set 2:
Tomorrow Never Knows -> Dark Star V2
Mason's Children (out fo drums)

Encore:
One More Saturday night - extremely rocking and long as they will have plenty of time

Maybe One More Saturday Night will close Set 1 and Sugar Magnolia will be the encore - that would be cool

speaking of the weather....maybe a Cosmic Charlie tonight in honor of the eponymous hurricane heading our way?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Sideshow Bob (Drkstrjry) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 04:19 pm: Edit Post

Tix says "rain or shine" - usually tropical storm remnants just cause heavy rain with little wind so the stage should stay dry - that's all that matters.

There is a shakedown over in the northwest corner of the lot (closest to the tower). Park near the beach bathrooms - close to venue access and restrooms. I'll be there in less than 30 min's trying to catch up on sleep I did without last night.

I was at Jones Beach last summer during some very rainy weather and I assure you, The Dead played right through it.....the heavy stuff is going to start coming down around 9:00 and the winds will continue to pick up all night, but the real bad weather won't hit unitl early tomorrow morning.

Holy Shnikies!

Just woke up...

What a week. Last night was easily the worst/toughest/most stressful night to end DEFINITELY the worst week on the job I've ever had. Even the CT tech was like "holy shit I've never seen it like this!" I think I read over 30 CT's last night and my eyes were literally popping out of my head. Couple the fact that besides being stressed to the gizard I had the pleasure of watching the last weeks setlists roll across the chat screen and know I was missing all the fun. speakin to skins at setbreak and hearing how psyched he was almost made me loose it but it made glad he havin such a blast....

well its over now and...

GAME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gonna shower up, roll across the street grab a big bottle of tequilla, pack the cooler, with brews etc. and get movin...

a few people gonna swing by (yes, including my bro GC), pick me up and we are...

HEADIN OUT TO THE BEACH, WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

celles in effect, see y'alls there...

ps-please give us the RUBIN!!!!!!!!!

I look forward to Chinacat 2002's review after the show for each tune played as he seems to do at all the shows he attends. Drums ended with Mickey on beam and he pointed to Jimmy to come out - the ensuing duet was an incredible piece of improvised music - it was WAY out there - it was the highlight of the night for me

There are times when it seems like Jimmy can't find a place to fit in - not tonight - his solos were inspired and very hot - but the vicious space that came from Mickey and Jimmy was one of a kind - way beyond what they did on Friday - can't wait to hear it again

Cold Rain & Snow>Trunkin - Great start to a really tight set. Phil with the Vocals on Cold Rain & Snow. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl was a bit of a let down but Golden Road brought it right back. Banyan Tree broke the momentum again. Box Of Rain was sweet, very well played. Tennessee Jed was awesome... a great version. Mason's Children rocked. Thought it would end the set but Aiko was really fun...even with Mickey’s cheesy rap. All in all a very nice solid set. During the break a bunch of people commented that the band seemed to be much tighter tonight than last night.

2nd Set started off nice with Warren singing Terrapin with much soul. Great Jam into Dancin'. This had the makings of an incredible set then the song selection got week imho. Time Never Ends was well played but then
Only The Strange Remain...ugh! more Mickey cheese into a decent Drumz/Space. I especially dug the space when Jimmy came out. Rain starts to really come down now and the boys take their sweet time to go into Standing On The Moon. Love the song but again I was looking for a bit more in this spot (Wharf Rat / Stella maybe). China/Rider... okay we are now back on track for the rest of the show. Great playing here! Just pouring rain at this point then a Blistering Lovelight. I mean BLISTERING! Warren just took over once he stepped up to the mike to take the 2nd verse. Sang it so well, but the licks between Warren & Jimmy were on fire.
Fun but predictable encore. All in all a very good show. Had a great time even with the rain. Great vibe. I only caught this show and Hartford. I thought Hartford's "Pigpen show" was a bit better for me. But I cant complain.

Is it just me or is anyone else out there think it just a bit lame that Bobby cant just memorize the freakin lyrics to these songs. I don't know... I find it lame that he is just constantly reading the lyrics but still getting them wrong and throwing the rest of the band off. I mean almost every song he sings has at least one vocal flub. His daughter was dancin a bit tonight. It was really adorable.

anyway…thanks to everyone for a great show. Especially my fellow Wharf Rats!

I get as frustrated as the next guy with Bobby's vocal flubs but remember he is dyslexic and I would not be surprised if that in some small part causes some of these flubs. That and the fact that he freely admits that when caught up in a jam he gets drawn into the music and loses his space in a song. I for one want my musician in a space where he is losing himself in the music and I will tolerate flubs for impassioned playing. Just my opinion...

>>>>>>Is it just me or is anyone else out there think it just a bit lame that Bobby cant just memorize the freakin lyrics to these songs <<<<

here we go throwin' stones again, well from my point of view it's older age, the brain shrinks as you get older. he's also trying to learn new songs that he's wrote along with bringing back some old classics , there's only so much room in that memory bank. bobby wants to beleive that he can remember the lyrics, so when
he is looking out on to the audience he'll pick
up someone thats singing away, hopefully they'll
know the lyrics, if not he's gonna go right off singing what ever they're singing. jerry used to do the same thing. heck, this whole thing ain't about being exactly perfect anyway is it ?
oh yeah, he has blazed about a thousand times,
that doesn't help the memory bank any either.
still it looks like a grate set list. the dead haven't done dancin' since I can remember.

Absolutely wonderful show...great one to go out on. Loved Golden Road, CR&S opener was incredibly tight. Terrapin to open the second set was beautiful.

I was very skeptical of Warren joining the Dead...let me just say that I've been completely won over!

Oh, and I would imagine that if a person is dyslexic, teleprompters would be useless. I personally don't mind when Bobby fucks up...just makes me smile...that's our Bobby.

Well... I didnt think I was being that hard on Bobby... if he really is dislexic then I can understand it better and owe an appology. I had never heard that Bobby was dislexic, but that would seem to be a good explination. I decided to research it further to get a better understanding:

Dyslexia is the world’s most common learning disability. It is a neurological condition that affects a person’s ability to read, write, spell, and concentrate - all symptoms that can significantly limit a person’s potential in school, work, and life.

Studies suggest that at least 10% of Americans suffer from dyslexia.

Reading is a particularly difficult task that most people take for granted. While the brain has designated areas for functions like speech and motion, no area of the brain is devoted to reading. As a result, reading requires the coordination of many different areas of the brain.

For people with dyslexia, the neural pathways between different areas of the brain are underdeveloped, making the tasks of reading, writing, and spelling very difficult.

Dyslexia is marked by these common characteristics:

Uncoordinated eye-tracking. Eyes tend to follow ineffective paths when scanning text.
Weakened visual neural networks. Electro-chemical pathways are not strongly established.
Abnormal neurological function. Difficulty acquiring new visual, auditory and language skills.

The first president of the United States, George Washington, was dyslexic. So was Albert Einstein. Dyslexia, which comes from the Greek meaning “difficulty with words,” is a language-based learning disability. It affects the ability of a person — even one with above-average intelligence — to read, write and spell. Dyslexics also may have problems putting things in order, following instructions, and differentiating between left and right.
Thought to be genetic and hereditary, some forms of dyslexia can also be caused when hearing problems at an early age affect a person’s language comprehension skills. Doctors still don’t know for sure what causes dyslexia, but they say there is a correlation between left-handedness and the learning disability in many families. It is estimated that one in 10 children is dyslexic. And more males are affected than females.

Dyslexic children can usually succeed at the same levels as others once they are diagnosed and start receiving extra support and attention at home and school. Children suspected of suffering from dyslexia undergo a series of reading, spelling, drawing, math and intelligence tests, as well as visual tests, laterality tests, visual scanning tests, sequencing and other tests to examine which brain functions are interfering with their acquisition of normal school learning.

Dyslexia also affects adults, but those who receive attention early in life often learn how to compensate for the disability by adulthood.

Dyslexic adults, however, tend to continue to have difficulty with language skills throughout their lives. But a dyslexia diagnosis is no barrier to success.

Some famous dyslexics include children’s book writer Hans Christian Anderson, U.S. Army General George Patton, Italian artist, painter and inventor Leonardo Da Vinci, telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell and actors Whoopi Goldberg, Henri Winkler and Tom Cruise. — By Ephrat Livni, ABCNEWS.com - Sep. 12, 2002

Great time again, 6 shows in 8 days, I need a vacation! Would love to go South with the boys, but the crazy days of quitting a job to go on tour are long since past (especially since it costs 5 bucks for a bottle of water!)

Fantastic show, great cap to a week in the metro area (Camden's a stretch, but do-able on a weekend).

CRS was really tight, they also did a great job on this in Camden. Could have thrown a Jack Straw here, the metro area is now 0-12 on Jack Straw over the last 2 years. (1 Bertha each year as well, last year at PNC, this year in Camden). It's really great that the band has so many tunes in rotation, you get to hear almost everything in a week. Repeats this year include CRS, UJB, Mason's, Terrapin, ChinaRider, Sat Night, and Ripple. No complaints about those, just always wishing for more Jack Straw and Bertha. Fortunately my lucky stars got me out to Shoreline in June, which started out Here Comes Sunshine, Jack Straw. Had my two young boys with me for their first show as well as my wife and Mother-in-Law! Again, I'll thank my lucky stars.

Real glad to hear Truckin' last night, we had 3 virgins in our crowd. Just like my first show at Nassau (Go to Nassau's Friday show), they played Truckin' and ChinaRider, the only songs I really knew (who else got turned on by a friend with Europe 72?). Also very well received by the newbies was Dancing. One of the great things about covers is that they give the new fan a chance to identify with the movement, we all know how great it feels to know what's going on at a Dead show.

Enjoyed little Schoolgirl more than last year, never really like the gritty Pigpen renditions(heresy!), this one had more spunk and maybe a little tempo change. Not as seedy. Golden Road was awesome, finally figured out the words to the chorus thanks to the guy sitting next to me. Even after 25 years, I still got a lot to learn about the Dead. Same for Mason's, don't know any of the words, but what a great tune. Tunes that the Q have worked on for a while really sparkle with the Dead. Chris from Rhode Island told me that the Dead stopped playing Mason's in 1974, hard to believe they abandoned that tune. One of the greatest things the Q brought to the party was the dusting of off several forgotten GD gems.

Banyan Tree was pretty cool, I forgot about that tune, it set a very mellow mood, good chance to chat with my new friend about life. Much nicer than Even So, last year's choice in the same slot. And then

Two good very enjoyable shows!

Does anyone know who the small child (about 3 years old) on stage in the white dress is? She was standing between Bobby and Warren during Lovelight. She tried to dance a little and finally decided she wanted to kick a beach ball off the stage. My guess is the improvised beach ball kick is an early 70s impulsive Bob Weir type behavior, the child has his sensibility. Was that Weir's daughter?

Ta - Da

Box of Rain!!

You knew it had to be coming, and they stuck into it in a very cool way. Phil is doing a superb job on the vocals on this tour. He has picked up a real rhythmic way of delivering the words, very clear on this Box, where the syllables come out differently than on American Beauty, but all in an appropriate time. It really refreshes the song, not that this one's ever been overdone. The gratitude in Phil's heart has really been shining through this tour, not just in his words, but in his singing, his dancing on stage, the intensity of his playing, and the smiles on his face.

Awesome Tennessee, probably the best I've ever seen.

Also Mickey's finest Aiko, I think most heads are now able to enjoy. I'm happy to see Mickey happy, he really but a lot of emotion into his delivery. Same on The Strange, his facial expressions are worth the price of admission.

Moving quickly now, no need to comment on TS, it was very well done. Dancing I though was just a tad lackluster, but so what, still good to hear, and NY got a great cheer. Didn't know Time Never Ends, but it was well played and seems to have some deep lyrics.

Standing on the Moon was touching, rain was really coming down hard. Really needed something electrifying after that and they brought out a smokin' Chinacat > I Know You Rider. The place was really rocking and there was only one way to close the set, so they did it with a great Lovelight. Not quite as much fire in this one as say, Camden last year or in Wallingford with PLQ, but still an awesome finish to a week in NY.

As it was only 10:56 wheh the band went off, the prospect for the double E were ripe, and so it was. The obligatory Sat Night was hopping and had everybody dancing, and then a lovely Ripple to thanks us for our time.

What a great band, after about a week's rest and normalcy I'll start thinking about the fall/winter. Bobby with SCI will be interesting, but we'll all wait for the real deal at the Tower and the Beacon!!

See you there.

Ed

Box of Rain! Sounded great, might be the best I've seen! Other highlights for me were the Terrapin (with a great jam at the end) the run out of Space was hot too...especially once they hit Rider....all the way through Ripple was really sweet.

Wasn't that crazy about Banyan Tree, but others I was with liked it, also Only The Strange is pretty lackluster, I love when Mickey sings Aiko, but Strange is just filler as far as I'm concerned.

Solid Mason's, 2nd time I heard it this tour. Jimmy really cut loose during this show, he had some room to breathe and his solos came into their own.

Bobby did seem pretty tired. I was really close to the stage and had a good look. Phil and Billy and Mickey all seemed downright spunky, but Bobby looks a bit brokedown. Hope he gets some rest before Ratdog.

Peace All......and to The Dead..."thank you, for a real good time"

No question Bobby's a bit tired, his voice definitely showing the strain. He had to reach down deep but drilled it for I Know You Rider and Lovelight. It's been a long tour.

Understand your point Ferko on the Strange, but I think it's starting to develop. Used to feel the same way about Self Defense, but it's developed into a nice song, probably Mickey's best.

Without new songs in the mix, we're back to El Paso > Mexicali every third night, and I don't think anybody wants to go there.

It's a little rougher when you only go to one or two shows and want to catch all your favorites, but that would kill the many show tourheads which really help at the box office.

>>>one of the better shows in years

You need to get out more, Pally.

Sat's show was good, crisp playing, but hardly spectacular. That was Friday.
Was was amazing?
Mickey & Jimmy at the end of drum s/beginning of space? OK, very good. We then settled into the same ole, same ole, every night space, this one full of Morning Dew teases & get this cheesey SOTM that doesn't even have a guitar solo at ther end.

After that, the China > Rider was solid but hardly awesome, as was Lovelight, the latter of which paled compared to a PLQ version, especially the aforementioned Wallingfore (Oakdale) one from last fall.

The playing was good, very good at times, but this was hardly 'THE Night' or a classic show, certainly not one of the best in the last few years.

The Terrapin was solid, not epic, but good, the Dancin was about what Dancin's have become: 7-8 minutes, good, a treat, well played & unfortuately, clearly decernable frm the HC lot during the soundcheck (I like surprises myself).

After the dasncin, The Warren song was funky, OK, the another Mickey song.
Funny thing, everyone complains about Mickey songs.
Why?
His voice?
Well, I go to listen to the JAMMING & Mickey's tune's jam......

Honestly, Phil croaks out his tunes too you know.
The only guy on that stage who can sing (properly) is Warren Haynes)......

So, I was surprised when OSR started spacing & went unto the drums, but I thought the pre-drums section was pretty good.

As for the first set, tis true that from beginning to end it was more consistently good than the night before, but it never came anywhere near the superb level of The 11 >UJB >WRS > LIG either. It was safe & easy IMHO......

Cold Rain, very Good.
Truckin, better, with a double build-up, going into Schoolgirl, or more precisely, stopped & Schoolgirl started, played at a pace that made it sound more like Big River than the blues, so I liked that more.

Golden RD.... Decent, no match for a GOOD PLQ version though. The end was weird because it really sounded like they were starting Viola. Too bad......

Banyon Tree. Did Bob mess up THESE lyrics? :-)
The jam out slid away & if it wasn't going back into Dark Star, then nothing last night was - it was right there.
Then, chop/chop/chop - a commom tranitional problem for this band - Box of Rain out of nowhere. OK, but not The 11 either for those of you saying sat was better than fri....

Mason's was great, pounded out, tearing it up, rolling along and then RIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!! chop/chop/chop Not Fade Away, oh no, I mean Aiko.
Serious 'train wreck' as Taper rob says; HUGE transitional problem as I say, very rough.

Aiko was Aiko, good, everyone loved it, but the bloom went off that rose in around 1983 for me.....
Still hearing Warren on slide during it did add a different touch & it was a more than decent enough version.
I did not, however, "Feel the love" as the young lady next to me asked. I was too busy trying to figure out how the guy 10 feet away from us could to every show for over 2 weeks & not hear a word of it as he hadn't shut his mouth since sitting down at the end of TRuckin (A trend that continued until I lost it during Jimmy/Mickey & The Beam & told him to "Please Be Quiet") :-)

Anyways, I guess I would've expected more outta the band post drums. It struck me like i had a mailed in, "let's get the %&*$" out of here" feel to it even though it was pretty good.

And remember, as they had gone to 11:30 on Friday, I saw no reason to not go to 11:30 on Saturday........

All in all, it was a decent (mostly), well played (but safe) show, but VERY far from one of the better shows in years.

The night before, that's another story.

They took a 45 minute break on Friday and a 30 minute one last night. That mkes for the same amount of music. did you ever think that maybe they wanted to give us a chance to get to our cars and get home before the torrential rain that was predicted?

Last night's show was a great time and a fun end to my 'mini-tour' this summer. got to the lot at about 6:30 or so. crusied around shakedown, had a few beers, and soaked it all until about 7:20, then headed into the venue. I had a decent seat and got in a few minutes before the first set started.

It was great to hear a opener with Phil on vocals! that definitely got me groovin' right off the bat. The Truckin' that followed was awesome! I'm pretty sure I hadn't heard them play this since last new years, so I was stoked to hear it. Golden Road was also cool to hear. I don't really think banyon tree is that bad. It has a pretty spacey jam and it doesn't seem to me to be too overplayed. Box of Rain was, of course, great to hear. Phil sounded great to me. Tennessee Jed was pretty good too, though this hasn't ever been one of my favorite songs. Iko was a rockin' close to the set, for sure. for me personally though, mickey's vocals are just a buzz kill. as someone noted above, often times they do jam, and this one did, his vocals are just so percusive in sound that sometimes they are really jarring to the groove, imo.

another long set break, this time in the rain... anyhow, as the jam began it was clearly sounding like terrapin to me, which was certainly welcomed. I've noted this in countless posts before, so forgive me, but dudes, I wish phil was still singing terrapin. to me, it would be a lot more meaningful with phil singing the tune, but what can you do? Time Never Ends, ok the jam sounded pretty good. Only the Strange Remain is a pretty bad song, imo. however, I believe both going into and going out of (if not, at least going out of the song into drums) they did a crazy feeback jam that was just screaching. it was pretty intense. phil was facing his amp holding his bass' pickups infront of his speakers and shaking it to create some wild noises! drums was good. space was pretty interesting too, though by this point it was fully pouring out, and I went under cover in the halls for a few minutes. I was really hoping that they would come out of space with a real rocker to get everyone warm again as many people seemed chilly. SOTM was a weak selection, imo. Bobby really can't do this song any justice. after a few minutes though, I decided that I was being a little harsh on bobby and was able to appreciate the song for what it was. the jam at the end had a least one really nice phil bomb. china>rider was a nice pick to get many folks back on their feet, I wish they would've come out of space with this. I found the jams in rider to be especially sweet. the transition between the two was pretty good. Lovelight was a good rockin' close to set also. Phil's bass lines were great, hell, they'd been great the whole show.
Saturday night encore was obviously what they were going to play and it was pretty rocking, but needless to say, I was really glad when they started a second encore. I thought at first it was going to be brokedown and I think maybe it was supposed to be (maybe not though), but Bobby just started singing ripple and they went with that. as far as I know, this is the only ripple with phil playing bass this summer, no? that being said I thought it was awesome, his bass sounded so great on this song. I didn't really understand why they had been doing it without him playing this summer.

All in all, it's been a great few shows for me and it's always great running into zoners! actually, I'm surprised I missed quite a few zoners I normally do run into! :-( oh well, hopefully there will be many more opportunities in the near future! A special thanks to zoner Burnzy (who doesn't really post much anymore, unfortunately), and his girlfriend Michelle who graciously gave my way-too-spun ass a ride right to the path station in manhattan on their way home. thank you both so much!

Anyhow, I sincerly hope all zoners who wanted to or want to see this incarnation of the dead this summer, got to; and had a great time! It's been another good/fun/(at the very least) interesting summer tour, imo and I was certainly glad to be a part of it! Those who are going to any of the remaining shows, be safe, have fun, and do a dance for me!! :-)

It was in response to someone bitching about Mickey singing 2 songs & I was just pointing out the vocal limitations of the other band members that somehow go unmemtioned around here.

>>what is "time never ends"?

Time Never Ends
Lyrics: Hart plus ?
Music: Hart plus ?

First played on the Mickey Hart Band summer tour 2000, and subsequently by The Dead in 2004.

Steppin' through the midnight sun
To a life that never ends
Snowflakes fall, winter comes
Time to make amends

God of wind, god of time
I give my heart to thee
Take me to a better place
Let me soul- let my soul fly free
Don't you know that?

Time goes on forever
Time it never ends
Time goes on forever
Time it never ends

A shooting star, a meteor
A wizard guiding me
Beyond the moon, beyond the stars
Beyond the galaxy

A secret place, a gentle space
A land beyond pretend
Where time stands still and always will
A world-a world of never end
Don't you know that?

Time goes on forever
Time it never ends
Time goes on forever
Time it never ends

Oh god of dreams, of life supreme
Come to me tonight
Guide me to a better place
Beyond this starry night

Take me to a better place
On golden spirit wings
Where time stands still and always will
Where gods, gods
And angels sing

Time goes on forever
Time it never ends
Time goes on forever
Time it never ends

Time goes on forever
Time it never ends
Time goes on forever
Time it never ends

Mickey Hart describes the origins of the song in his road journal:

"Tonight we introduced a new one I wrote; it is called Time Never Ends. This song is very powerful. I wrote it as a sort of prayer and then I decided to not play it soft and sweet but go the opposite way with the music to gave it a ska and high life kinda groove. I think it works well in this form."

Well after reading all the reviews I thought I would chime in. I don’t think I was at the same show many of were at because I thought it was completely weak. I have seen many post-GD shows and configurations and this was the first time I really felt like I was seeing a "nostalgia" act. Bob Weir was embarrassing. The man should be limited on his Jerry tunes - lets leave that to Warren, who can actually sing with some emotion and put his own soul into it. Is it just me or does it seem like Bobby lacks vocal rhythm when delivering crucial lyrics. I would hope that after three decades of standing next to Jerry he would have picked something up. I don’t think this is the point in his career to try and make Jerry songs his own. Don’t get me wrong, I am a Bobby fan, but would rather see him sing his own songs. For example, while I am a fan of Standing on the Moon, Bobby singing Looks Like Rain or Masterpiece would have been a better choice. Has anybody ever heard Warren sing Good Morning Little School Girl? Last night’s version was pathetic. Bobby’s vocal flubs don’t really bother me. Part of seeing The Dead was the imperfections. What does bother me is that the show lacked energy, Bobby broke the momentum and they did not seem to be exploring any new territory.

As far as Micky is concerned, his singing may be completely cheesy but he looked like he was the only one really enjoying the night and having fun (and they were dry). I guess after 30 years of probably wanting to get out front and sing he is finally getting his chance. We cringed a bit at some of his vocals but they really were no worse than some of Bobby’s. I actually think he did a decent job on Aiko (however, it did have a kareoke sound to it). Micky’s next stop - Vegas lounges where he can entertain his audience and explore his vocal abilities.

Not wanting to be all negative I will say that the highlights for me were Truckin, China/Rider and Terrapin. Although we all know Phil’s real ability is the bass (not singing), it is always nice to hear him sing Box. There were also several jams that had me up groovin’.

I don’t think there is any real comparison between Phil and Friends and "The Dead." While Phil’s band is constantly exploring musical territory, for me, The Dead were stale and uninspired. While being rained on did not help the situation, my wife and I left "underwhelmed." However, at the end of the day it is always a good day when you get to hear some live Grateful Dead music.

what a bunch of clueless losers. I am a kind and gentle soul reading these "opinions"..and no longer understand why you all bother going to the shows.Get a life!! If you don't dig it, don't go..EVERY SHOW I GO TO IS AN EXCELLENT SHOW..I MAKE SURE OF THAT.I HELP MY FRIENDS ON STAGE..I TAKE MY TURN KEEPING THIS BALL OF ENERGY IN PLAY. DO ANY OF YOU? OF COURSE THIS IS THE PHILZONE AND YOU ALL THINK HE IS THE MAN.WHICH HE IS ALONG WITH THE REST OF US!~ NONE OF YOU NEGATIVE SOULS APPEAR TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE EVENT IS ALL ABOUT..IF YOU DID, THE INFANTILE BS WRITTEN HERE WOULD NOT EXIST. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TRANSFORMING GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL CONSCIOUSNESS, THEN YOU GO TO A DEAD SHOW WHERE THERE EXISTS THE MOST SUPPORTIVE AND MATURE ENVIRONMENT AVAILABLE FOR THIS ACT. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR SOME OTHER KICK, YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE..AND ONE MORE THING, GOD FORBID THE DAY BOBBY OR PHIL LEAVE US. WHEN THAT DAY COMES, ALL YOU BOBBY BASHERS SHOULD GO TO HELL WITHOUT A BUCKET. PHIL CHOOSES TO PLAY WITH THIS INCREDIBLE CONFIGURATION OF MUSICIANS.GIVE THE MAN THE RESPECT DUE TO HIM. THEY CAN PLAY ANYTHING THEY WANT ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT AND I WILL ALWAYS FEEL HONORED TO BE IN THEIR PRESENCE. LATER...........

Get a grip buddy. I go to these shows to hear the music. This is what we call a "review"...it goes something like this sucked...that was good blah, blah, blah. How about if Bobby got up on stage and farted all night into the mic? Should I be honored that I was in the presence of greatness?
Of course they can play whatever they like but if they don't play well or the music is lacking, it is acceptable to acknowledge it. The fact that you would blindly accept anything is much more worrisome than all of my so called "negative vibes." I think it is you who is in the wrong place. This is for people who actually have some kind of opinion, no matter how they feel the show was played. You should start a thread called "I don't even need to listen to the music because EVERY SHOW I GO TO IS AN EXCELLENT SHOW."

grateful dad....i've read your stuff..you seem more level headed...but if this band is such a bummer, why do these people go? anyone who is anyone knows on a given night the show may be majestic for one and a bummer for another...why is that? song selection, seat selection, drug selection, who sang which song selection...the truth for us is that unless those transcient factors are transcended, there can never be any REAL opinion. some people say they go to hear the music..we go to participate at the making of the music..that's how we transcend the nonsense..to each his own..

I was deeply affected by Saturday night even to the point when the guy next to me in the aisle kept shouting at Phil during his donor shpiel ("One More Saturday Night, muthafuckah!!!") all I could do was laugh (He even had the temerity to claim he 'called' it!) Great show, high drama, nature takes it's course- but why do Gnu Yorkers have to chat through the whole goddamn thing ( although they tranced everyone out enough at one point that, when they brought the volume down, you could hear the sound of the rain over the jam) Glad to NOT be in Coventry VT

Dear I am disgusted: easy on the caps, you're giving me a headache. Here is my take on the reviews: first of all, there are the "I am disgusted crowd" who are not capable of being objective, whose lives are so meaningless that to admit the Dead are imperfect is to admit they probably wasted their whole lives on the band for nothing! having absorbed the two shows at Joan's beach, what strikes me is how different they were. On Friday we saw a band on the edge, exploring jazzy interpretations, laying down complex grooves and going with them. On Saturday we heard a great rock band with two great guitar players knocking the cover off the ball.
That said, certain observations made in this space should be addressed.
Bobby: he can't sing. Because it's "The Dead" he insists on being front and center. The truth is, he doesn't belong with Phil, Warren and Jimmy because he doesn't possess the musical acumen. He IS tone deaf, and he can no longer sing his "D" songs like Playin, Sugar Mag, and Saturday night, yet hje goes out there night after night and sings off key. He's an embarrassment, yes a nostalgia act. But he did create some fine Dead music! They are HIS songs. Jerry's tunes should be left to Warren, who can really sing.
PHil has an odd voice but he sings on key and enjoys it. Mountains, Box, whatever he touches comes out fine.
Mickey shouts instead of sings, but he's for real! he LOVES the band! He LOVES us! I enjoy the hell out of him. Without Mickey we might as well just wait for Phil and friends, when we get rid of Bobby and Jeff and bring Rob, who can really explore nuances with Phil and company.
Overall, two great shows. The band is alive, it is making new music (which, by the way, is growing on me). No More Do I, Strange World, the Mettalica song, and several others I think are the makings of a good new album.
Bottom line is I'm still going, the band is still going, and seeing them is still a highlight of my life. See you at the next one.

Listen I'm not getting "Hot "at all. I was just trying to express my displeasure of someone trying to tell me my opinion is not valis. Is this a review section? Why can't someone make a negative comment without being trounced on. I love this forum for the open and honest reviews. I don't want everything sugercoated.I have a great time at every show I go to but I'm trying to separate the actual show experience with the music that was played. I sat in the rain from first note to last like many and I will describe the music as it sounded to me. The fact that you can't accept that It's ok to write a negative review bothers me.
No hard feelings we, after all we both like the Dead enough to post on this site.....right?

henry f murphy...please watch what you say..you may not realize who you are speaking too...saying shit like "i can't be objective"...please..after being "objective" i came to realize that while i'm watching and listening with a "critical eye and ear" i was missing the point of the event...it is proven through others beside myself that we can dial into a space that is mutual and communicative with the members of this music making band. this can be done high, straight or sideways.it is a fact..this is real..it is also a choice.to give up the " criticism" and step up to the next level of experience. it is not easy and not for everyone..but is for many of us including the music making members. shit like "jerry's tunes should be left to warren"..give me a break...weir has been a partner as they all have giving these tunes life..i see no one better than weir or lesh to sing any tune of their choice..if that's what they desire...i also think it's incredible watching warren sing a drop dead stella blue in camden. i think the criticism generally seen on this board is hardly "objective". let the dead do what they want , the way they want, and be happy some form of this still exists. it's as simple as that...i trust them..do you?

Hey Dew...

I really dug this show. Admittedly (those of you who may have seen me at D/S) might have heard me hemmin and hawin but I thought they really brought it back big time after space, my, my that china>rider was really huge and really what my tired, aching, soakin, bones needed.

helped me SHINE MY LIGHT through the cool LI rain :-)...

and as far as the first set goes...

I can't remember a more fun (tenessee), intense (cold rain), inspiring (BOX, truly an absolute honor to be in the presence of what was being laid down by the one and only, PHIL LESH), rockin (truckin, golden road, MASONS!!!!), 1 1/2 I've spent in quite some time.

Words really can't do it justice, besides I'm too spent. Maybe I'll let this settle a little and then when no one will be here to read it I'll right a proper review...

peace,
bones

ps-great time seeing all you peeps...

Dewit, I don't know you at all. I do see that you are pretty popular on this site which must make you very happy and fullfilled. I unfortunately do not have time to see many shows because of work. So I may be critical AFTER the show once I have absorbed everything from that night. If I hear something,a song, bar or note that blows me away I would acknowdledge that as well. I truley love music, especially that of the Greatful Dead. When I hear complacency of the players and the fans alike it is a bit upseting. How can we possibly critisize others for how they feel. If this message makes no sence it's becaused I'm fucked up on Ambien....I hate Monday mornings.

Music is communication.

Effective communication requires a effortful sender and a willing receiver.

Whenever I read a negative review of something that I really got off on, I usually interpret as more of a statement on the frame of mind of the receiver, not how successful the sender's effort was....

Furthermore, not all messages are meaningful for everyone at any given time because of the readiness of the listener - it would be impossible for a musician to create something that had the exact same effect on every listener

Heck, there were probably people who were at the Fillmore West on 2/27/69 when the Dark Star from Live/Dead happened - and left saying "what a lot of crap that was"

You need to realize for me seeing "The Dead" is a music concert and a way of seeing old friends. I love getting off on the music but what really does it for me is my wife and the fact that we are expecting our first child (who must have felt some Phil Bombs last night.) I think I have enough positive energy in my life and the two drunken fools behind me couldn't spare any particles. I am a true blue New Yorker and maybe that comes out in my attitude and sarcasm but I really mean no ill will toward anyone. I'm happy you can get off on a show no matter what or how it was played. Goodnight.

Reach for the sun, catch hold of the moon
They're both too heavy but what can you do?
Reach for the stars, smack into the sky
You don't want to live but you're chicken to die
Chicken to die

Run, run, run for the roses
Sooner it opens, the quicker it closes
Man, oh, man, oh friends of mine
All good things

AND WHAT A FUCKING GOOD TIME!!!!!!!!

FIRST AND FOREMOST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THE SOUND AT JONES BEACH IS AS SICK AS I'VE EVER HEARD, REALLY, IT'S LIKE AN OUTDOOR BEACON AS FAR AS SOUND GOES. The band knows this better than anyone, it's why they seem to get wayyyyy the fuck off there.

Add in the "Jones Beach psychedelic tweak factor" and voooom..we've got some insane dynamics. The "Jones Beach psychedelic tweak factor" has to due with the lack of beer availability in order to smooth "things" over. It's my opinion that the band is very much aware that they're dealing with an electric and attentive crowd rather than a drunken hoe down. A nice change of pace, and that's coming from a guy who LOVES pounding brews.

I'd like to thank Ruby for setting my buddy Rip up with what I felt to be the kindest seats in the house..dead center just off the floor in the tapers section. All night I felt like Billy's bass drum was like a laser beam of sound blowing right through us...SICK

Cold Rain was a great start that had everyone hopping to Phil's gummed out bass that was bouncing of the love. Truckin was fun and put into a very nice spot in the set..they really stretched the spiraling jamming at the end a good bit. Schoolgirl had a fast tempo that was confusing to me at first..being my last show of the Summer I've been confused a great deal recently so it alright :-)

Danced myself into another world during Golden Road...THE GOLDEN ROAD OF BILLY'S BASS DRUM BEAMING..CUPPING MY HANDS AND CATCHING PHILS BASS..

Banyon whiz only to have to sprint back in for the highlite of my Summer...BOX!!!!! It was what it was-->the stuff that tears of love are made of. Phil singing about his Dad and many of us looking out at him and loving him like our our wise old Granddad..there it is..Jerry was our Pappa Bear..Phil's our wise old~cosmic~Grandad

Tennessee Jed..hmmm felt a wave of an being a teenager back at an early 90's first set...so different yet the same.

Felt like I heard the Mason's before it even started, jumped up and into full groove mode at first flutter...things were so amped on into Iko that even Mickey singing was alright...full on stomp down break out your favorite jig type of fun to send us to the break:::::::::::

saw some really good folks that I didn't think were going to make it out

:::::::::::Lady...ya know, there are just some words that mean so much to you that they are part of your soul..I'm very happy that there are others here as well as several people that I spoke with at the show that miss hearing Phil sing this..

Terrapin made me really happy that I have long hair....SURGING/PEAKING/SILENCE/BUILDING

TERRAPIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disco Dead

Time Never Ends>Strange Remain..mostly tripped out on the screens during these..Candace melting the powerful vision as always

DRUMS/SPACE WAS AWESOME!!! Billy getting down in his Aztec steal your face shirt and Mickey on the beam. He got the best sound out of the first object he attacked the beam with, a black disc that he tapped it with. Jimmy came out and things got wicked..

STANDING

I felt bad about not being able to get into this at Great Woods..then I read someones persective about Bobby singing to Jerry and felt really bad. It's amazing how a little attitude adjustment can flip your switch...Bobby singing to his brother who he still feels with him when he plays..right on

China..JIMMY LACED THIS WITH QUICKNESS AND INTENT..I COULDN'T STOP WATCHING HIM PLAY..IT WAS AMAZING..cool transition into the dancefest that was Rider

Bouncing Lovelight that had some confusion near the end

Phil- "New York brings this out of us"

Sat>Ripple..take a bow and walk off with red and blue bolts swirling on the screen

Alright, it did sting when Weir fucked up the lyrics and he does do some rather odd things here and there..but ya know what..Bobby's getting fucking old. If anyone in our beloved band gets crispy these days is it really such a shocker? He didn't WANT to fuck up and it's not that he doesn't care..maybe he's getting a bit spacey in his older years..I'm sure a lot of us will be too.

I think two factors go into people giving Weir a hard time these days, some actually rejoicing in it. The First being the fact that Phil is actually getting better with age..this really is amazing to me..it's like he's driven along by the stars or something. Anyway, maybe it's the stark contrast between the way Phil and Bobby are aging that make some feel the need to get so upset.

Also Weir has always been the fresh faced good looking kid in the band. I think it's strange for some uf us, including myself, to see him getting old.

I can't tell anyone what to do and really don't like preaching to anyone about how they should feel..I guess all I'd like to see is for folks to maybe take it easy on the guy who has been a major part of delivering so much fun to us over the years. It's also not like I'm asking y'all to go see Ratdog or anything :-)

Also I enjoyed "Nothing Else Matters." I respect the guys decision to play it as well. I think it shows that they still have free and adventurous spirits rather than letting dust settle on their reputations. Would you really want to be into a band that would turn up their noses up at something before they even bothered to see?? Getting angry over something as beautiful as the Grateful Dead doens't make sense to me.

Enjoyed having my old friends up from DC, Philly for the shows..

and then there was Pittsburgh-->spent Rambo dropping the cartridges like bullets :-)

nice hanging with some of you PZ freaks although I wish I could have had time to hang a bit more

once again..it's been very real indeed

YOU ESTA THE MAN AS ALWAYS..I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO EXPRESS HOW THANKFUL I AM TO YOU FOR DOING WHAT YOU DO

>>>>time for a bit of balance

Amen brother.

Sweet review Skins...

OK, 4:45 AM, here goes...

After a hell week of watching these sweet shows go by and knowing they were in my backyard got off work at 8 AM, crashed till 2:30 made a few calls and got the ball rolling.

GC and crew picked me, came crashing through the door of my apt. while China>Rider was cranking from 6/26/74 (Yea Keyshawn, you know I'm partial to 5/19, but I do fully concur that this version is among the greatest ever).

Grabbed the cooler, hit the liquor store packed it with beers, tequilla, etc. and hit the road. LIE was rough but we had a sweet ride, with a killer system and jammed it out bigtime on the way. First the Scarlet>Fire from SPAC, 88 (INSANE!!!, get this if you don't have it already).

Then my 2 fav versions of Truckin and China>Rider I ever attended 9/20/90. GC was spinnin tunes upfront and he was CONVINCED we would hear both these tunes...

Got to the lot, Lites realed us in and LET THE WILD RUMPUS BEGIN!!!!

GREAT PREGAME

Pounded down my drink of choice. Tequilla, great hanging with all the freaks, thanks for the hospitality, then HS shows up with hippie crack, my oh my. JSTRAW you gave as a scare :-) pre-game wound down (thanks for the good eats btw jmack, THE GRILL MEISTER INDEED), had a little browny for dessert and headed in...

OK show time, on the way in, pat-down, the guy nails me with my glass (well hidden). I was so buzzin' I did'nt even really get scared or pissed. I started laughin', and am like "oh man, you got it!, you sneaky #$%#@!", he was actually cool, just tossed and let me go, no gestapo tactics what so ever:-)...

Walked in perfect timing, right as the band breaks in to...

COLD RAIN Sweet. We all thought it was comming on 12/5 (Remember?). No prob. PERFECT way to start the show. Phil singing like a champ (what I was MISSIN at Mansfield). Strong and true. Nothin like a Cold Rain opener. Always sets the tone with high energy that is usually (tonight INCLUDED) very well manintained! Get the seats and I too must say...

THANKS RUBES FOR SWEET SEATS, SECOND SECTION BACK RIGHT BETWEEN PHIL AND BOB. GREAT SITE, SOUND, ALL GOOD :-)

then

TRUCKIN, you called it GC, KILLER, kept the energy high. Much more uptempo truer version than Mansfied (from what I hear) Great jammin at the end. Hit the BOMBS, place was goin nuts and it only the 2nd tune :-)

GMLSC-Standard Fare, well done, good blues, kept the momentum goin till...

SEE THAT GIRL BARE FOOTIN ALONG
GOLDEN ROAD

chock full of great thumpin from Phil, jammin from Warren and Jimmy and super psychedelic organ from Jeff (ala 67 Baby). I like the fact he plays PIG's parts!

Banyan Tree-you know what, whatever. At this point I was flyin, feelin SO GOOD, that I was like cool. The tune is a little trippy (if you listen) and the lyrics are too. Didn't mind it one bit.

BOX OF RAIN-this was so incredible. The place literally was a BOX OF RAIN. The Jones drizzle, mist, lubricating my buzz perfectly and Phil just leading the way singing with passion like IMHO, ONLY HE CAN! Perfectly executed. Just beautiful. I was speechless.

TENNESSEE JED DRINK ALL DAY GONNA ROCK ALL NIGHT!! Well you can't drink in the place, but if you behave in the lot you can sure get plastered before the show. Sweet Margarita Nectars were still in effect.

When this tune is well played, it is really THE PERFECT FIRST SET TUNE. Lots fun, bouncy, trippy, rockin', Drunkin sing along, that everybody can get into. At this point I had fully recieved what I came for. then...

MASONS!

We dug him up on Tuesday
HE HARDLY AGED A DAY
Taught us all he ever knew
We never knew so much before
We may never know so much again

If there was one tune I didn't mind hearing again from Mansfield, this was it, it KICKED AS THERE, and so it did at Jones, RAGING AGAIN...

Take me to the Reaper Man
To pay back what was loaned
If he's in some other land
Write it off as stoned

Thank you, thank you, thank you...

IKO, IKO-At this point the boys had logged one of the best first sets I have ever seen. Now many will debate this but, its just personal. I really dug it, and it all just kind of came to together. The place, the seats, the sound the tunes, the buzz, the people, the FUCKING awesome jammin that we all know the band is capable of, BEING DELIVERD!!!. AIKO AIKO is a tune of CELEBRATION, and everyone in attendance was Celebrating BIG TIME! this is the one and only tune I don't mind Mickey singing. Hell Ramrod could come out and sing it and it would still sound good. Great way to end a killer set.

BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!

to be continued...

Exactly

> Phil is actually getting better with age..this really is amazing to me..it's like he's driven along by the stars or something.

I have been thinking this lately too - at the Saturday Great Woods show he was banging his bass against his amp for feedback like Jimi at Monterrey - there is a cool picture of Phil doing the same thing in 1968 at the Newport Rock Festival (Newport California) - it was fucking fantastic to see a 64 year guy who has led such an incredible life being so full of the joy of youth - an inspiration to this 50 year old, let me tell you.

It feels to me like Phil has decided to really try to squeeze everything he can musically out of what is possible - and rehearsing a lot and mixing up the "old rules" and the members of the band is one of the tactics to do that - I'm digging it and I think Phil is too.

I think Phil's transplant has something to do with this too - to him, EVERY day is a gift - each day should be to us as well, but we usually take them for granted.

Phil is treating everyday as if it is a gift, he's also giving back so much with regards to trying to help people see the light about doing the right thing on many levels.

Musically I'm re-stunned all the time at his vigor. I really do think the fact that he's getting better and better has something to do with the unexplainable universal flow.

AMAZING

like I said to him on his PZ Birthday card..

his ripple effect of kindeness will flow on forever

>>>>>Whenever I read a negative review of something that I really got off on, I usually interpret as more of a statement on the frame of mind of the receiver, not how successful the sender's effort was....

So, basad on this statement, YOU are claiming that therefore YOU are the sole judge of what is a good or bad show (or level of playing) & that it's the listeners fault that they do not agree with YOUR like or dislike of the show?

It's really alot simpler than that, Bob.
It's just LISTENING to the music & did it blow you away or not?

I guess that's saying the same thing in a way, but to me, It's so much simpler......
I can put away ALL BS, all my personal problems getting to the show, what's going on in my life, the rain, the jerk next to me who's drunk & won't shut up, whatever.....

So, I NEVER have ANY problem being a perfectly clear 'conduit' of the music. I simply hear what the band puts out, period.

Whether I'm stuck on the L.I.E. for 5 hours or zip into the venue in 20 minutes, I hear the same.

I just take in the music, then make my observations afterwards.........

And, IN MY OPINION, saturday was a well played, but nothing special show, very much having the feel of being 'mailed in' post drums/space.

There are, however certain people who review shows here, like Huck, Laughing Bones or Hail Skins who would think a nasty series of farts blown by Phil into the microphone after eating Mexican food was a great song - just read EVERY review they write, & that just is not the case with The Grateful Dead/Other Ones/The Dead/PLQ over 39 years. There are great shows, good shows, average shows, bad shows & some just plain awful shows too.
There's also just plain awful shows with a great moment thrown in (see Dark Star on 12-5-03) & conversely, great shows with a real cluncker thrown in the mix like Easy To Love You on 4-23-83, which is otherwise a tremendous show, even such 1st set fillers like Candyman.

Just $.02 from an achy old fart STILL trying to recover from 2 straight shows almost 48 hours ago - and stuck in the house with 3 kids due to the rain. :-)

No, I didn't mean that at all - what I meant was that THEY are the sole judge of whether it was a good or bad - but the definition of "good" or "bad" is not universal, so that someone who thought the show was bad should not expect everyone to agree with them. By the same token, people who thought the show was great should not be surprised that it didn't work for others.

In order for a show to be good, I think, it must somehow add something new to your own personal history of the total musical experience that you have had - if it doesn't add much new to that, it's a bad show, basically. The first versions of the Other Ones were like this for me, okay and fun, but they didn't really add anything. This band is adding a lot to my alreaady extensive experience of the dead, and I find that amazing, frankly - just how deep is this well?

I have a really deep thirst for amazing spontaneous music - and the more I try to quench it, the thirstier I get - that's what's happening with this verison of the dead for me - and I call that good

BTW, before you say 12-5-03 was a great show, I corresponded with a member of PLQ after the show & they agreed that the band thought it wasn't that good, but "Had it's moments", and "Obviously the Beacon run was no match for Philly the weekend before."

Believe it or not, but I know it's true because I talked to ^&*$%#$ back & forth for a while back then as he was a fan of my reviews & sad over my leaving (honestly).

Bucky I cannot believe you are actually bringing the 12/5 contreversy up. JUNKIE :-)

You can never quit! Can't stay away!!! :-O

I happen to agree that philly was probably a stronger run than the Beacon. But remember PHILLY WAS PSYCHOTIC (I saw that happy look on your face after 11/28, can only imagine what you must of looked like after 12/30).

This is ALL RELATIVE. Just because the Beacon MAY not have been (beauty is in they eye remember) "AS GOOD" as Philly does not mean it still wasn't REALLY, REALLY, REALLY awesome. Remember you are comparing it to probably the best 3 show run of the tour. My favorite show was probably 11/28, but I loved all the Beacon shows, YES including 12/5 as I've said many times before.

peace,
bones :-)

SLAMMED BY BUCKY!

awww man...I was beginning to think the fact that I'm a fellow Star Wars geek was giving me cover :-)

It's all subjective reality IMO. I've become good friends with Huck and Laughing Bones, the one thing that I know to be true about them both is the fact that shows to them are about the whole experience...form the pre-game to the late night rage. The adventure of it all wrapped up with finding beauty where it is waiting to be had.

As for me, it really kind of freaks me out to lay my heart on the line here with my post partying sometimes very spent reviews. It's also really frustrating for me when these shows fill me up with so many good things that I want to share only to find that I can't get across what I want to say in a proper manner. A great a show experience for me is dancing while the music plays the band, crowd energy, I feel as if this has more to do with what goes with the bands playing than some realize.

I feel really tuned into to my GD brothers and sisters sometimes at these shows..most of the time that's what I'm looking to convey to those who couldn't make it out on that particular night.

It's a risk reward for me. If I didn't care about what I write here then I wouldn't matter much that someone thinks it's lame. The thing is I really do care so there's no denying that it sucks being slammed. I also hope that Phil may even read these things once in a while, actually when things get irrationally negged out I find myself hoping he doesn't even though I'm sure he'd take the criticism in stride. The reward for me is the hope that maybe someone reads what I write and feels good about what went down at a show they couldn't attend..even if it's just a glimmer, the whole idea of it seems really cool to me.

Peace to you man and I'm glad to see you come around. I most definitely respect your musical ear...I think folks slamming you for speaking your mind sucks too.

BTW

I didn't like the 7/31 Great Woods show I went to..

called it a "post kitchen sink denouement"show in my review :-O

>>>>>>>>>There are, however certain people who review shows here, like Huck, Laughing Bones or Hail Skins who would think a nasty series of farts blown by Phil into the microphone after eating Mexican food was a great song

LMAO.

dude read my Mansfield (7/31) review. I thought the show was a major let down, but still somehow managed to MAKE THE EXPERIENCE a GREAT time.

and also I still haven't reviewed the 2nd set here. so before you claim I lack objectivity,
just chill and wait, I thought (besides Terrapin) the pre-drums portion blew (just ask Dew or Bluest Note), but then I thought they brought it back big time with the China>Rider.

Over all it was 1st set that I thought made this show special.

also to quote you senor Buckmiester (from a recent review)...

This was "MY" review...

that I thought, does'nt make me WRONG or RIGHT, just ME, thats all..

ps-I know you dig my our reviews (mine, Huck, HS's etc.) otherwise you wouldn't read em...:-)

Twin 4:45 rebuttles,

NICE SKINS. Let's see Bucky come back at both of us now. I think we got him flanked...:-)

And for the record, I revel in the entire experience but for me the core issue without a doubt is ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC. I listen intensely.

I had my Jerry boosters up(hand cupped behind the ears) for the entire 2 shows I saw (and I was in the 4th row at Tweeter!)

and I agree with you skins, it IS GOOD to see Bucky back here. Didn't always agree, but alwaya appreciatted his opinions (bout the music that is...)

Bucky is welcome....

...but the fact that he doesn't NOTE our critiques makes me dubious. Is he reading? IS HE LISTENING?

For indeed I had two criticisms of Mansfield 2 (too much Bob predrums, too much ballad post space) and I torched Strange Remain.
I had issues with the first four songs of Scranton II being start stop.
and wait till he hears what I think of Phil screwing up the first line of UBC at Jones.

But I do try to make everything a good experience. Every show, every day, everything I do. Life to me is all about playing the pros over the cons....and in general being at a show is my Happy Place, so the cons are few and far between.

But, go ahead, slam me, Buckster, you know I'm a pain junkie.
;)

Did you also find it necessary to adopt her style of show review/prose/poetry?

During the drums, I went to the bathroom
Thank Godess it wasn't too far
Out of Jimmy & Warren Wildness
Ba Boom Ba Boom
Phil Blasts out Dark Star
Out come Billy & Mickey in a rush
As my head turns to mush........
Unbroken Chain
Further fries up my brain.....
Then verse two commences
But Phil, Warren & Bobby sit on their fences
Deciding what next to do
So Jimmy says "Not!"
And begins a second Slipknot....
They all look at the clock
chop chop chop
Franklins Tower......
Played too quickly, but still has the power
A Quick And We Bid You Goodnight
I walk left foot then right
And I'm back in the lot
Man, this show was hot........
I thank Godess both around us and above
Man, Can't you feel the love?

Skins, Key & I were checking reviews prior to Friday via phone & I see this review, I coulda sworn it was Huck. I scroll up....

'Hail Skins' at the top......

We got a kick out of that. :-)

I guess I just see the music, period & you guys take in the whole thing as an 'experience'.

Believe me, Bones, only reason I went Friday was to get a break - now I need a rest from my break, lol - an autistic kid not in school all summer to care for, a 10 year old daughter with the same nerve disease as me having to have both her hips reconctructed, first one done on June 1, meaning 2 weeks WE both spent in the hospital (sorry but YOU know why I HAD to stay the whole time, right?) , a month in the wheelchair, the brace comes off Thursday finally, then we do the other hip after I get both MY knees replaced.....

So, I understand your 'need' to get away/release at shows, but I also see/hear the music for what it is in itself aside from MY needs.....

BTW, Saturday blew away 12-5-03, I'm not saying that.
And, I really did talk to ^&*^#$. :-)

I have never been to a bad PLQ show, except for the benefit at the Beacon in 2001 with Bobby as special guest.

Saturday's show was awesome based on one thing:

During Golden Road the spirit entered my body and caused me to dance. I literally felt it enter my heart. That alone makes for an awesome show.

Me too. I'm trying to study ULTRASOUND PHYSICS!!!

Just read this...

straight out of the text book.

"THE Q FACTOR" - refers to two characteristics of piezoelectric crystals: THE PURITY OF THEIR SOUND and the length of time that the sound persists.

I think we can all agree on one thing.

but the point is well taken.

when I write I review, I try (probably miserably unsuccessfully) to put the reader in my MINDSET.

Ofcourse its all about the music but...

like it or not, your experineces leading up to a show effect how you feel during it and events after effect how you remember it.

I'm not about to start taking written notes inside the show, but I try and take mental ones. Pre-game, buzz, sight, SOUND (the most important factor for me), people I'm with to share the experience, song selection, quality of playing, transitions, cosmic coincidences, weather, post game, all have on effect ON HOW THE SHOW IS INTERPERTED AND RECOLLECTED, so I like to include that stuff (as well quality cell phone pics when possible, see Mansfield 7/31 review :-)) when I review the show.

Honestly Huck, a lurker?

I really must be frank here:

I have not spent much time on the Philzone since I left.
NONE in fact.
I only checked a few reviews in order to see what folks were saying prior to going to Hartford.

Then, I bought the ticket for Saturday about a week ago Thurs, & 2 for Friday only last Tues just because I felt bad because my wife wasn't going (and I'm a GD addict too & I might miss THE show, lol).

So I read a few more reviews.
I must be equally frank that I find you folks 'type' of reviews 'hard' to get through because they seem to focus more on abstract types of things & personal experiences than actually 'reviewing' the music.

And, that makes for VERY tough reading for those who weren't the actual person experiencing it.
Reminds me of that guy 'Don Corleone' who would go to the shows, Summer only I think, & do these 'reviews' that would include 3 'pages' of personal experiences of wanderings through the lot. War And Peace was shorter........

>>>>>>I think we scared Dookoo off.....

Why do I have to be Dooku? (note PROPER spelling)

I see myself as more of a young Anakin (see above note) at about half way to 3/4 through the next movie. :-)

>>>>>I'm not about to start taking written notes inside the show, but I try and take mental ones.

Not me, all from memory, AFTERWARDS.
That's why Friday's review is devoid of exact details within TOO or Dark Star. Mrs B's wine sack was getting to me a bit by then, plus, I wanted to 'stay in the moment', not think.
.

Pre-game, buzz, sight, SOUND (the most important factor for me), people I'm with to share the experience

Not me, at least in reviewing.
Like on Sat, as a HC lot person, we were next to some guy who had a backstage pass, said he was 'Cotter' or 'Cutler', Cotter, I think, Hunter's sound guy, used to do Phil.
He & I had a most interesting conversation for about 45 minutes or so over the course of the evening as he shared the Kung Pao Shrimp I made & even moreso after his & my friends went in to catch Warren & we were left alone.....

His obsession with 1972 & why the bands of today (The Dead & PLQ) won't play like that anymore & believe it or not, my defense of why the previous night was a good show & also the various dynamics of the jam (or lack thereof) within the various bands......

Very interesting as I got the feeling the 2 of us could've talked all night & missed the show.

Best line was when Cotter turned to his friend & says "He's (me) even more jaded than I am."

But, my view is why should I include that in my review of the Dead's music?

>>>>>as well quality cell phone pics when possible, see Mansfield 7/31 review ) when I review the show.

I don't even watch at the show - I listen with eyes closed, so why would I watch the photos on the review page?
All they do is slow down the loading process.....

It's not like they're photos of a Brittany Spears concert you're taking.

If your not gonna watch, why go? Why deal with the hassel of travel traffic, security, etc. You can listen to the tape at home or in a car and HEAR much better.

Visuals add a lot. CANDACE, beatiful lightshow in the rain. Watching Jimmy's fingers fly, or Warren rip, or Phil bounce, bump, thump and smile. Facial expressions too. I close my eyes too somtimes when I'm kind or transing out, but I always love to OPEN EM UP, to not only hear the music, but see it as well...

Jerry used to say he could see all of his solos and if he had time he could draw them out...

on another note...

Okay, I'll bite on this one. I sometime watch but not too often. No, I don't close my eyes. I go where the energy is and I usually find it in strange places with bad views. You don't need to see the light show or watch the boys interact to be part of the show.

Just another person's opinion on a very opinionated thread.

>>>>If your not gonna watch, why go?

The live experience.

Let me see if i can explain this.....

Of course I watch, but, only like when I'm not concentrating on listening, i.e. during the singing (and my arms need a rest from cupping them around my ears for louder sound, lol).

The only time I recall being intersted in watching a little was at The Who in MSG in May, but that's a whole different ballgame there. By watching, I mean, Townsend play guitar, not Daltry swing the microphone (he clunked some chick in the 5th row in the head I heard). That night, Townsend was on FIRE & The Who's deal isn't a really long jam, but ripping it up quickly, & that night PT was ripping it up as I've never heard before, so, as I've got this screen 25 feet away, yeah, I took a peek now & again.

Now, my point in not looking during the jams.......

We have 5 physical senses:

Sight
Sound
Taste
Touch
Smell

Which one (S)
does music get interpretted by?

I say hearing.

You can say others, but I say HEARING.
Therefore, to totally absorb the music, I want EVERY other sense TOTALLY shut down to remove all possible distractions.

Remember the old saying, "You can't walk & chew gum at the same time'? Well, there's some wisdom in that. You can't TOTALLY listen in the zone I acheive & watch at the same time.

Sight, looking, is causing your mind to receive 'data' & 'process' it at the same time your brain is trying to absorb sound & process that. You can't completely focus on 2 things at once...

Try cutting a guy open & operating while listening to the nuanses of Dark Star from 2-13-70, Bones & see which one you decide to concentrate on fully......

I get so into 'The Zone', some of you know this story, but Laughing Bones may not, but during Slipknot! by PLQ at Hartford in 2001, I'm grooving, doing my hands cupped around my ears thing, & my wife touches my back in a loving way...
I totally fell out of my 'Zone', lost my groove.
Her touch, activating A DIFFERENT SENSE, had just completely ruined the music taking me away to THE ZONE, that special place where I am alone with the music & nobody else is there. I told her, "NEVER touch me during the music!"

Fanatical to most, even some of you, but PERFECT sense to me........

And thats why I don't look during the show & why a posted picture of a bunch of old farts standing in one spot playing music has no value to me; I just scroll on by.

That's funny, Bucky, that you met up w/Cotter - dude actually used to patch out of the rig I ran in the late '80's (when I was one of the few tapers who had even the remotest of a clue) - yes he did Phil's sound in '02 and it blew away Cutler, and he's enough of a human that you can actually have a conversation with him (unlike the current sound crew - man talk about bad attitudes! - but more on that in my VA review).

In any case, after Friday's life-altering experience, I knew this would be the shallow rockin' show (as was Sun Camden) so I took it light on the "substaces" (the peeps I was hangin' with couldn't understand why I wouldn't want to try to get back to where I was Friday night, that's the difference between "use" and "abuse" - for me, it was a "vision quest" in the purest sense, not just being "fucked up", and I feel no compelling need to do it every night, having experienced something like that maybe once a year).

In any case, my seats were in front of the tapers, dead center, nice sound! Weather prediction was for downpours, I was fully prepared - anyone bitching about the weather wasn't THERE for Friday Red Rox - if you withstood that, you could withstand anything Mother Nature throws at us!

First set went well generally, I actually do like a string of rockin' tunes - IN THE FIRST FUCKIN' SET!!!! - Banyan Tree being the first downer, and I actually like this, but it had no jams and Bobby was reading the lyrics just like I used to read speeches for public presentations for my job - like a government bueaurocrat reading about zoning regulations to 2 sleeping senior citizens at a town hall meeting ("are we talking redistricting or reapportionment?") - then the last 3 tunes were wholly forgettable - extended piss break.

2nd set starts nicely w/Terrapin but it's a warp speed version - no exploratory stops at all - way weaker than Mansfield or Camden - the jam after picks up nicely and a good transition into Dancin' but again Bobby's weak rote recital of the lyrics (especially a Motown song like this which just HAS to be delivered with passion) just killed any semblence of a buzz I may have had - and speaking of buzzkill, all night there was the rank stench of stale vomit around my seat - probably from last night and not fully cleaned up - only occasionally overpowered by the acrid reek of clouds of cigarette smoke - when it rains the still air and some kind of chemical reaction in the damp air turns cigarette smoke literally into tear gas - by the end of the show it was painful for me to even breathe - sorry to the 99% of 'Zoners who smoke cig's but I just can't fuckin' take it - on top of my Thyroid disorder just one more reason I am in perpetual buzzkill mode at shows (and why most zoners run for the hills when they see me) . . . anyway, after Dancin' they jam into the Mickey song they soundchecked - for a second I was dreading it was Corrina but thankfully not - I really like this song - very well done - then another transition into Strange Remain - oddly enough the highlight of the show for me - wild psychedelic jamming and I gotta give it to Mickey for "singing" with passion - drums/space OK, the Mickey Beam w/Jimmy thing getting a little old if you see it more than 1 time - again why I liked last year and fall '02 was that drums/space was way DIFFERENT every night - no formula like now (and '78 thru '95) - then on to THE HORROR of Bobby "reciting" Standing on the Moon - well it might as well have been William Shatner doing Lucy in the Sky - I actually tried to stand and enjoy it but just like the acrid reek of Marlboroughs in the air I'LL JUST NEVER GET IT AND I'LL NEVER BE COOL - on to China-Rider - way weaker than both Red Rox versions but at least not rushed like Mansfield - Lovelight felt tacked on but was sung with way more conviction by Bob than anything else tonight - and way better than the hideous Alpine version which I'd heard the night before in the hotel garage on whippets and tripping my balls off - again, this is a classic motown song that just HAS to be sung with at least an ounce of passion - for the encore, had a weird experience of deja vu - didn't we do this in the rain last year on Sat? But last year I was actually happy and enjoying it. Oh well. Just glad this wasn't the last show of tour for me.

The highlight of the night for me was finding the "AK-47" in the post-show shakedown - the mini-mason jar made it well worth the extra $10! Oh, and the Jamaican jerk chicken pita's were TO DIE FOR!!!!!

Oh, and if I was to sum this show up in 1 phrase:

"A Ratdog show on Steroids"

OK, understood, but some times the feeling I get from more than just the sounds. I can respect the deeps soundscapes where you can literally hear every instrument in your mind, but I like to move, groove, listen and LOOK. I love seeing the smiling faces in the crowd and knowing that WE ALL are gettin it, feeling the energy and SEEING it too.

to each his/her own.

wow, Bucky glad I could drag you back into this place for a little healthy debate this afternoon.

now I'm gonna pull a Bucky myself.

I'm way too addicted to this shit and its keepin me from gettin my studying done and I've got a major Physics exam in 3 weeks and I'm gonna quit (only temporarily) cold turkey. Not upset, not bummed, not mad, just ADDICTED. and until 9/10 when my exam is done, I'm termporarily signin off...

peace,
bones

I LOVE YOU ALL

WISHING PEACE OF MIND AND HEART TO Y'ALL AS WE CRASH INTO THE FALL....AHHHHHHH AND WITH THE CRISP GLOWING TREES MAY WE MAY WE BE BLESSED WITH THE RAGE OF THE Q ONCE AGAIN

>>>>then on to THE HORROR of Bobby "reciting" Standing on the Moon - well it might as well have been William Shatner doing Lucy in the Sky - I actually tried to stand and enjoy it

Yeah it's pouring by then, so I sit down (loving SOTM so much to begin with) & lower my head to keep the hood completely over my head......

Next thing you know, I'm nodding off.
I wonder if I let out a snore or two?

>>>> Bobby was reading the lyrics just like I used to read speeches for public presentations for my job - like a government bueaurocrat reading about zoning regulations

Too funny.....
Remember when Bob actually SANG Sugar Magnolia?

>>>>Oh, and if I was to sum this show up in 1 phrase:

Also Too funny, but the several folks around me I chatted with pre-show & between sets thought Ratdog was THE SH*T.

Now, it's been fun, but life becons me with Katie to YNHH for therapy tommorow with Paul in tow......

So, as the warden said when Tim Robbins escaped in 'The Shawshank Redemption', time for me to "Up and disapear like a fart in the wind."

I'll be back someday; It's been fun. :-)

Well,

Wonderful.

Friday,, Pouring rain pre show ,,just about drop-less for the show,,,,,,,,,,,, well they never really got things really goin till Franklins tower and then it was too late. Phil was noticably pullin Bobby along. And we even got some Metallica out of them,,,,check the setlists LOL ...oh boy. The jammin was intense and even alittle more spacy than I've seen in years,,,kudos.

Saturday ,,,different story altogether CRS,trkn,,and I think that was my first GM little schoolgirl. They just tore it up and the crowd was with them ,,,in the pouring rain ,, just about the total show time. We even had two,,,Two mickeys' . He was actually visably having a blast,,,as usually Phil is apparently always having.
There was a little girl ,,about 4 yrs. old or so that was out dancin a little bit with Bobby for most of Lovelight. At first, I thought that some parent had sent (hulrled) this littler cutie up on the stage ,,like a beachball. Saw on the Philzone reviews that it was his daughter,,,gives me hope,,it's not to late for me yet.

1st set of 2nd night definitely takes the prize for both nights, outstanding.

The Grateful Dead are my favorite band of all-time.

The grateful dead were such a great band and for so many years, it's dissappointing to me to hear them now on this current tour. I was so excited about the tour after hearing the news that all remaining members would tour together. warren and jimmy just don't do it for me; their affect on the Dead is too overpowering. I could hardly hear Bob's guitar this summer. To me, the guitar play of jerry and bob was the greatest thing about the grateful dead's sound. they just meshed together so damn well, it was pure genious. to go from that to what we have today- with jerry gone and bob's guitar overpowered completely, i just don't get anything out of it.
on a side note, warren is too self-absorbed to sing jerry songs.

phil, bill & mickey are great! the current guitar-heavy lineup is ruining their songs for me

i miss good old jerry and bob's band.

Nonsense. To me, most Jerry songs have been waiting since '95 for Warren to do them justice.

And to Mr.H...you have arrived and it is a joy to have you here with me. Travelers such as us are unfortunately and obviously few and far between. But let's remember this true insight from the Captain: At best 1% of a given nights audience is "in attendance". Now knowing that to be true, we realize how much influence can and is exerted from the 1%. And Thank God, our friends, being the Dead also know this fact. Together we make this music happen, together we make this world happen. It's about being .............together.
Thanks H........................................
