I've been to Verizon several times. I live 2 hours away. I actually don't remember it being to rough for the PLQ visit a couple of years ago. Maybe my memory is clouded though. Obviously you want to use some sense though. This is a southern venue, and our law enforcement tends to be fairly zelous here. Most of my problems with security at the past years of shows have been with the venue service itself and not necessarily the cops. Just don't be too blatant about anything and you should be OK.

Looking forward to these shows. After seeing Bristow's set lists there should be lots of great jammin tunes in store. I'm personally hoping for a Mason's, St Stephen and maybe a Blue Skies with the whole gang up there.

*** Anyone coming from points south, I have tickets for Charlotte> Atlanta , but my ride backed out. I live in Gainesville, Fl and probably could get as far as the Fl/ Ga border. hopefully won't have to thumb it.
peace and thanks
ps may have an extra pavilion seat to offer up

After seeing Raleigh and Charlotte, I have to say I liked the Charlotte show more, despite the presence of Branford. The Estimated and ensuing jam before drums was the highlight of the show.....very nice rendition of Comes a Time. Reuben smoked! And Warren does some great slide on West LA

just rolled into SC after 2 hours on the road in between Atl and charlotte.
This was my 6th show of this tour, and my least favorite. I really hope this is just a warm up for tonight in ATL but the setlist just never moved me. The show had a lot of small peaks but never took me over the top, especially post D/S.

First off the venue was only 80 percent full and this is one of the smallest venues of the tour. Although the Shakedown was across the street and the main lot cost 25 bux extra, it was a raging wide open vending scene, plenty of herbals, chocolates and various other fun. the lawn was fuller than the pavillion!
we had section 4 so we could see well. Sound was ON tonight, Phil sounded great and the mix was very well done. I guess thats why im a little dissapointed with the sow. It had some of the best mixing but the song selection was hurtin in my opinion they gotta be saving it for tonight in ATL.
StStephen: well played opener, not as tight as Boston first night but pretty good, 3 times seeing it this tour is almost too much.
Ramble: ok a little slow, glad its in the first set.
Big River: Slow and weird sounding, warms up around 2:30, and begins to rock, ends well.
Althea: I dont get this song selection here, this is the 2nd time for me and this tune this leg, and the lot scene was not hot, the temperture was so maybe thats why bob busted it out.
Pocky: this rocked but its not my fav tune, Jeff was mixed bettder on this show than any other ive seen.
Straw: 3rd this tour for me, nuff said
Jingo: Didnt like it, sorry all those who do
Just a little light: could not have picked a worse set closer, a crappy end to an uneven set, very dissapointed at this point.
After Midnight: more crap in my opinion
Cucamonga: do I sense a rescue in the works cmon boyz!
Shine On: the night is lost to mere pandering to crowd response, that said, nicely done version of this cover. I like gravy train better.
Estimated: THIS ROCKED!!!the version was little wierd at first but it smoked. Themiddle jam was huge and the end jam was sweet too.
D/S: standard though longer than ive seen
Come a time: Yawn
R and C: love this tune and it sounded great but by this time all my momentum was gone, I could hardly even get up and boogie, very well executed number though.
West LA: fadeaway, please. Another 1st set song after drumz WTF yawn yawn yawn
Hell bucket: ditto, another 1st set song here after drumz WHYWHYWHYWHYWHY
Encore: WHY WHY WHY

this show was crap even compared to deer creek

sorry all you lovers, im a hater today, I hope ATL is better! Gotta hit the road!

The Dead, Charlotte, NC 8/18/04

Set 1:
St Stephen> Phil is STELLAR
Ramble On Rose ~ Warren likes this tune
Big River ~ Bobby has taken ownership of this one.Well done
Althea ~ Warren takes ownership,Jimmy highlights are noticable
Hey Pockey Way> Great vocals. I like this version
Jack Straw ~ Standard crowd pleaser.Charlotte crowd is difficult to motivate sometimes
Baba Jingo> Not crazy bout this one,but was the best version I have heard in awhile.Love Hart's energy.
Just A Little Light ~Love hearing Warren do this one.One of my favorite Myland tunes.

Set 2:
After Midnight> Warren likes playing Clapton material. It shows ~ well done. Not best choice for first set opener with a deadbeat audience.
Pride Of Cucamonga ~ Gotta love Phil's singing.Good bad or indifferent,I still love it.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond ~Awesome, heard it already, but better seeing all the guitar solos in person.
Estimated Prophet> High Point of the show. The band was right on time ~ TIGHT !!!!
Drumz/Space> Highlight for me I really enjoy the chemistry between Billy & Mickey
Comes A Time> Been really wanting to see this one for a long time.Treat for me
Reuben & Cerise ~Another treat, really enjoyed this one also.Highlight for me.
West LA Fadeaway ~ Great timing for this one IMHO very spacey indeed.Great slide work from Warren.
Hell In A Bucket ~ Not the best choice for this one.Well done but better first set closer IMHO
Donor Rap
Enc: One ~ Better choice for Warren solo tune.Rather have heard something else.Still enjoyed hearing thier version.
Overall the show was a great one indeed.I am very glad to have been able to see the show from 2nd row center, and THANKS to the band for all the enjoyable memories.Where is the torrent already ????? Kidding.
Wish I could have made it to the taper section to thank the folks, but 1st set was a challege for me.As a matter of fact, this was the first show I was at my seat from the time I sat down, til the time we left, not even a piss break or beer break.I just realized that. How wierd is that ? Did'nt move from that location at all all night.Even caught the entire Warren set.WOW

PS~ I had the pleasure of running into 2 zoners.
I met Gibby~Mrk Gibbs from Asheville,NC area and his wife and crew.Great time,THANKS Gibby
and saw Jim Brooks from Greensboro Midyswel, wish I could've hung out with ya Bro,but you were in the groove.
PEACE (~)}:

Sorry I didn't get to meet any Zoners at the
show,, I was proudly wearing the Team Phil
shirt, but didn't find anyone, checked into
the taper section asking for Taper Rob w/ no
luck, But still had a great time w/ the
Burnouts!!!

Thought the show was quite good. This is the
only show of the tour for me, and thououghly
enjoyed it.
I really liked Comes a Time, Estimated, and the
jams in and out of space were phenominal. I can
do without Bobby singing West LA Fadeaway, let
Warren give it a try...

The music was tight, and well played. The sound
was good, and the mix at our seats was great,,
you could hear everyone, Phil and Jeff were both
perfect in the mix. (Kudos to Jeff,, very good
keys!!!!)

Enjoy ATL,,,

But keep praying for a P+F tour!!!!

PS-- I really miss Jerry!!!

Hey friends - For a the night after a Branford guest appearance and for the second to last show of a tour, this one exceeded expectations for me and only let me down a little by the song selection to end the second set. Sound checks were Estimated Prophet, One and Baba Jingo and it showed as they really got after those 3. I heard a little Terrapin and Morning Dew jam mixed into the soundcheck too so perhaps that will part of the huge finale in Atlanta tonight plus a Dark Star no doubt? After all of the St. Stephen's on this tour, it actually was starting to be a while so I was very much hoping for it - and got it great right out of the box! :-) That was mighty fine. Ramble on Rose felt like old times too. They really passed the lead around on a very strong Hey Pocky Way which left Jack Straw feeling just a bit light. Nice After Midnight to start 2nd set, Phil sounded pretty good singing Pride of Cucamonga and Warren starred on Shine on. They tore it up on Estimated. Couldn't tell if they were ever looking to go into something else but early on sounded like an extended jam into drums. Comes a time was so nice and mellow and a real nice Reuben and Cherise. I was real happy to this point. Would've loved a Dew/Sugar Mag or China Cat/Rider finish but instead got Bobby singing West L.A. Fadeaway followed by Hell in a bucket. Certainly a surprise but for me just a reminder that Atlanta will be better. Very much enjoyed Warren and the band doing One as the encore. I thought the sound was terrific and the band played really well. Hold on to your hats tonight. It's going to be grand!!
Peace, Uncle J

I'd like to put my 2 cents in here. Just got home from the last two nights and read a few of these reveiws. Wow, opinions really differ on the same show huh? I had not problems with the way things were played on either night. I had 4th row, center seats for the Branford show. While things were played well, and he obviously added a lot the experience. In my mind, they never really got a good groove for the evening. Maybe a lot to do with song selection and placement.
Last nights though, really put a smile on my face. Still nice seats, so watching the interaction is a nice bonus to the music. I knew from the St Stephen opener that we were in for a treat. Too frazzled to say much else about it. The selection blew me away, Bucket closer? Who fucking saw that coming. Loved it. Have fun in Atlanta!

We got in during the 3rd song of 1st set. Nothing in the 1st set really inspired me much.

I thought the 2nd set was excellent. Certainly the unusual song selections (I saw 5 first time songs) helped alot. Plus the Estimated was really, really good.

The set lost some momentum late, but hey it happens.

As I stated in my previous post, I thought Charlotte was better than Raleigh despite Branford. Setlists never tell the real story, in fact the setlists listed here are not even accurate as far as I'm concerned. For example, the Music Never Stopped did not open the Raleigh show, a jam did! And it was one of the best parts of the show. But I am still drooling from the Estimated>Jam>D/S>Comes A Time>Reuben. The sequence gave us the best of the Grateful Dead, that being the monster powerful physedelic jam and the ensuing transition all the way into the sweet slow Jerry song. Warren did a beautiful job with Comes A Time. The slow Jerry song's were always a show in itself for me :-) :-(
Also, Warren made West LA with his slide.

HEY RICK...just back from ATL. It was GREAT meeting you in CLT! Thanks for the Warren disks. We have come to the conclusion that the RV thing is the wave of the future! Ah, air conditioning, hors d'overes, tequila in the blender...how THAT is a parking lot scene! :-)

At for the show....I was so glad that I went. It was my first show of the tour and after having read two months of reviews, I was ready to see it in person. I see the reviews above were mixed, but I must throw my hat in the positive ring.

I thought that technically, the band played GREAT! St. Stephen opener just as we take our seats was so sweet. Shine on You Crazy Diamond was just over the top!!! I thought things went down hill dramatically after Comes a Time. Hell in a Bucket to close the show was a bummer for me and though I practically worship the ground Warren walks on, One as the encore did not send us into the parking lot STOKED for Atl....it sent us to bed...

Overall, excellent show and a great time.

Greetings, everyone. I've never posted here but have wanted to for a while. Here is a review I wrote of the Charlotte show the day after. I see that some of my opinions are shared by some of you.

Well, the Charlotte show was a winner.

Immediately it was apparent that they were ON and full of energy as evidenced by the blistering St. Stephen to open! I almost fell over, I was so amazed, since they were so laid back in Raleigh and I was expecting the same. This went into a fun, singalong Ramble On Rose, followed by a highly danceable Big River. This was followed by Althea, then Hey Pocky Way, featuring a great rocking slide guitar solo by Warren. Then Jack Straw, characterized by blazing Jimmy leads and Bobby lunge-chords. Baba Jingo and Just A Little Light ended the set. Not bad.

Second set opened with a hot After Midnight and went into jaunty Pride of Cucamonga, then a dramatic Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Warren in
particular played great blues guitar in the first two songs. Also, I should mention that the lights were amazing during Crazy Diamond (diamond
patterns of course) and throughout the show you could just lose yourself in the light patterns. Estimated was a monster version that went into a very warped atonal jam and then Drums and Space. Drums and Space were Drums and Space (and I mean that in a good way). Space lead into Comes A Time and was lovely. This went into Reuben and Cherise (which I thought had beenteased earlier in the show - I forget where - anybody else catch that?). Reuben and Cherise is such a archetypal Hunter/Garcia song, that's why I love it so much, and it was fun. Next, West L.A. Fadeaway into Hell In A Bucket which were both OK, although kind of standard, then the encore which I missed because I was picking up my food drive poster (nice poster by Mouse!); it seemed to be another slow Warren song like the night before.

The energy level in Charlotte was about ten times that of Raleigh, although Raleigh did have its moments. I felt Warren really carried the night and Phil was, as always, terrific. Bobby has lost just a touch of his energy but is always interesting to listen to during the jams. (I think his daughter, or somebody's daughter, came out on stage for a few songs.) Jimmy is a great talented guitarist but always seems to me to be standing in his own zone of aloneness. I was initially a little dubious about the effect of Warren on the Dead vibe, but he is so damn talented both on guitar and vocally that I can see why they wanted him in the band.

Great show!

Liz

Saint Stephen with a Ramble on Rose

front row center for Estimated and One all BAGUUUUGGGGGGA crazed wiggy

voices tellin me.....
thanks midy for the stub HA! :-)
or rather
a HA HA!

I think you heard the Ruben tease during the Pocky. Great Pocky.
It was Baba Jingo, my first all tour, and I actually dig it.

Comes a Time was THROUGH THE ROOF!!!! but LA and then (sorry!) Bucket a huge letdown.

but leaving me with a Front Row One is some cruel mind twister indeed

"Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt -"

and Warren PULLS OFF THE GUITAR AND LEAVES THE STAGE.
oh SHIT!
I mean - you're making me walk out -

ON THAT!!?!?!

(the og lyrics would have them go BACK into the redemptive "carry each other carry each other" and END on that....but Warren chooses NOT TO.
definitive brutality

I thought that the Charlotte show was "pretty good."
The St. Stephen > Ramble Rose opener was my highlight and I was half sober to remember it. Jack Straw and Pockey Way finished up a better 1st set than the 2nd.
Shine on you Crazy Diamond and Cucamonga were the 2nd set highlights. We split during the One encore, not crazy about that song....on to ATL.
