Damn, it's Friday morning and the Rev. and Bagg Again have left home without me. After doing 11 of the first 15 shows this year, I'm left here to work as my friends go back again. Rev., make damn sure Bagg gets back home for the next journey. Still can't believe it's going to be Silver Medallion before me.

You guys have a great time at the show. We both know when I'll here from you guys again - three times (damn it). I'll update you on our All-Star tickets by the time you land. See you when you get home.

The Game

PS - Tell our friend in the back I said hello, too.

My humble opinion is that these shows will not completely sell out. It's funny, but the west coast heads still fondly reminisce about the shows w/Trey & Kimock. "Well, I can't get up for every Phil & Friends show that comes around." But those lineups were decidedly minor-league. Tsuyoshi Shinjo in Japan.

The latest band is the Jimmy-Jam, folks... Major league. I hope every last seat in the bay area is filled, so that people can experience what is now PHIL & FRIENDS. Get to hear the new tunes and see this band at its peak.

On a personal note, while I've seen countless shows at the Greek, and what an incredible venue it is, the stars have somehow aligned in such a way that I have never had the privilege of atttending a show at the Frost... Enjoy it everyone, and don't forget us here at the 'zone...

so where was everybody??? the place seemed only half full or maybe two thirds full at most.

and they stuck the tapers on the lawn, go figure.

phil quote at the end of rider, "we are running out of time", and then right into the intros, then right into the donor rap, then right into passenger. i guess they ran a few minutes over curfew.

First set was very mellow, very nice. All around good show. I was very suprised to see how small of a turnout there was. It did make for a nice, cozy vibe. The band played very well all night and I had a blast, but I am feeling lethargic at a time where I would normaly be buzzing.

SPECIAL Thanks to the Rev. I appreciate knowin the little things like the Norwegian Wood teaser! For that matter, thanks to all contributors.

As for the uncrowdedness of it all, well, ENJOY IT! After all the complaints about brutal crowds at NYE 2001, it must have been nice to stick yer arms in any direction and not touch nothin but air.In more ways than one, SPACE is GOOD. Looked like a great setlist, too. Have fun, Zoners! Phils album is #1 for internet sales and in the top 200 for Billboard in week 1. Not too shabby! The space might not last by the time it all heads east again.

A hearty yeah to the poster that liked Acadian Driftwood. The Vail rendition was astonishing.

I couldn't believe that they were selling tickets to P&F right up until showtime at the Joint. What a nice intimate venue and pristine sound quality. I agree with ya dossman, pretty soon it's going to be wall to wall with peeps. We also have to bear in mind that Phil is not going to be doing this gig 5 years from now, imo.

speaking of Norwegian Wood teasers, there was another, during the NFA coda at the end, Warren just pulls it out again while everyone is singing NFA. a bit longer than the first one.

I think I've collected as much of my brain as I can seeing as how I left most of it in Berkeley and Palo Alto!

Friday night Greek highlights...

Arrived pretty early and waited at the south gate for entry. They finally started letting people in and then after about five minutes, they held up the line. We didn't know why the line had stopped moving, but we we're about to find out because all of a sudden the band walked by the gate on its way to the stage for the sound check! That was cool and we got in and got a spot at the stage barrier right in front of Jimmy and Rob.

Before the show started, the band was huddled backstage going over a song becuase it looked like they were holding lyric sheets. My guess is they were working out the hamonizing on "Angel Band."

I probably could have read Molo's setlist with binoculars, but I didn't really want to know what was going to be played.

"Acadian Driftwood" was a nice mellow opener. "GDTRFB" picked the crowd up and then they started playing "We Bid you Goodninght" but got out of it before lyrics were sang before the nice job on "Angle Band."
"Soulshine was smoking like in Phoenix and Jimmy and Warren were again trying to out-do each other on solos.
"Box of Rain" was very welcomed and "Wharf Rat" was a nice treat.
Wasn't expecting the "Viola" to end the set, but it seemed to have lasted forever.

"Let Jimmy sing" got the chicken cluck from Rob and then on the second chant, Rob turned his mic towards Jimmy and pushed it out to him. I thought that was pretty funny. Rob then said something like, "Jimmy told us you don't want to hear it happen," or something to that effect.

The "NFA" in the second set rocked and She Said She Said>Lady with a Fan>Stella Bule>Terrapin Station>Rider was all great. The clock on the stage read 10:59 when "Rider" ended and the band never left the stage. Phil gave a brief donor rap and the band rushed through "Passenger" for the encore.

A kind roadie gave me Molo's setlist after the show when I told him I had driven from Oklahoma for the shows. I'll scan and post that when I get home on Wednesday.

This show will be forgotten when compared with the next two, but it doesn't mean that it was a weak show by any means. It was a very good show to open up the weekend.

Love to the Zone!

I caught both Greek shows and, while reasonable minds may differ, my favorite of the two was Friday night. The first set was itself a complete gem, incredibly soulful right from the get go. I'm personally very eager to hear a recording of Friday night, particularly the first set.

OHHHH my blood is BOILING when I read Rob's post that they stuck the tapers on the lawn at the Greek! Jeez, those BGP bluecoats are a nasty bunch of taper-hating gremlins! The lawn is literally outside the venue! Hope someone stealthed, those will be the only listenable tapes! I was there last year and this one bluecoat was hassling the F*ck out of us every day, telling us to move down 2 rows as we were taking up too much room for the "huge" crowd coming (I doubt it was 3/4 full even on Sat!), telling this one guy's wife to leave as she was not taping and therefore didn't belong in the tapers section. When I pointed out (humorously) to her that she was sexist for assuming the man was the taper, I was threatened with ejection. I'll take my least coast kick-ass rockhead security over the uber-cool bgp head cases anyday!

Hey, anybody who was in the parking spot with the exposed embankment wall with like the 12 foot drops and no barracade, we need to think about the needs of the vacant spinner who trips off the edge and breaks an ankle, a leg or a neck. I'm a drinker and I was there last year with 4 bottles of red wine who luckily, tripped up the hill instead of to the dirt edge where all the pot smokers hang, discourteous to the acid trippers and drinkers who also habit shows. If this were the 60's, it wounldn't be a question. People trip...
I was tripping out of it, on red wine and pot, and as a functional dystlect, I through my copious use of these things, had become "out of it," I could have walked/danced over the edge into a real Dead Pigpen-laced thing of gaSPING pain or anger. Imagine the helpless 21 year old, first-time-at-a-Dead-Show-mushroom-tripper who trips off the ledge and breaks his neck. This is a Hard, Cold reality to face, a broken ankle or worse...
How often does one encounter a parking lot with an exposed edge. Not very often. Fundamentally, it needs a fence. Please ask Phil Lesh, the storied god-child of Berkeley to demand a fence to protect future concert goers.
If, in all this mish-mash of the obvious isn't obvious to you, there is no fence on an exposed edge of retention embankment above the Greek Theatre that grows from 4 ft. to 20. Crowds of fans, for any rock concert hang there, and there is no fence from protecting them from falling... Behind this embankment is a parking lot for people who live in the apartments to the right. The road to Laurence Livermore Laboratory rings next to and above this, thus it is a popular place and needs protecting for all the future concerts.
Falling to a stoned-drunk pain that is virtually inconsciousunoble... Imagine lying drunk and stoned with a broken neck....

Copped a flight from Denver to SF for these shows, spent the day at Muir, sauntered over for the AMAZING opener--I SO LOVE Acadian Driftwood as a song, I always had fantasies of the Dead playing it...the first fifteen minutes of Greek #1 made the entire trip worth it.

God Bless P&F, the April show in Denver at the Philmore was my first Phil, and THANK GOD they're doing it...what an amazing band.

See you all at Red Rocks in two weeks--traveling mercies and blessings to you all.
James
