I hope that Chinacat 2002 goes to this show as he gives the best commentaries on what was played. Since I can't make it down from up north it would be nice to get his insights

looks like help is on the way for Atlanta. The Dead has been playing this every 5th night. And Atlanta is the 5th night. The question is what will be played sandwiched in there. Shakedown? Viola?

What are your opinions?

Hey Jimmy,

I'd just like to say that it has been a pleasure hearing you play. Your approach to music has set the standard that will indeed be hard to beat. Your dedication, work ethic, and genuine good vibe is felt by all who have had a chance to hear you. Tonight when you play, it is fitting that you're closing this chapter close to home with your family, loved ones, and long time fans cheering you on.

Again & Again,

Big Mac and The Wreaking Crew

Hello Zoners!!! It's G-Land the super newbie. This is a review of my summer tour which consisted of, alas, only two shows but they where two great shows. Bonnaroo and Tuesday in Raleigh. I have to give the blue ribbon to Bonnaroo. A little pesonal history first, let me put my perspective into perspective. The first show I saw was Hampton 3/24/87. Phil dropped huge bass bombs during terrapin and in my state I was under the impression that large sections of the ceiling were falling or going to fall, and I didn't care. The place was shaking to the foundation. I saw twenty shows and some Jerry band, with highlights in Hampton '89, Landover '90, Philly, not sure what year, still trying to piece that on together and am currently soliciting friends who may have been there to help account for my whereabouts, and Vegas '92, with Blues Traveler at Bally's for a late night show after the GD. My last show was 12-6-92 Compton terrace Az.

So I was really coming in from the cold at Bonnaroo, and what a welcome. First of all the scene was just like my first years of shows with the lot camping and all. i took my girlfriend, she was only 3 yrs old when I saw my first show and i wanted to try and share the experience w/her and the 'roo was the perfect place. Awesome show, having been a newbie on the scene in the late eighties, St. Stephen,High green, 11, Dark Star was literally a dream come true. I'm getting ahead though, the first set was killer Mr.Charlie, the highlight, warren surprising the hell out of me and then that Casey Jones with the impossibly tight and intense ramp up at the end. What an awesome set closer.

Second set I mentioned already, after Morning Dew, I was thinking encore but no, Help slip frank then double encore I could go on and on. After the show I was in a state of wonderment at what I had just witnessed and had a guilty feeling when admitting that this was better than several shows I had seen back in the day. Jimmy and warren together seemed to provide a surprisingly suitable Jerry prescence, with Warren's soulful delivery of the Jerry tunes and jimmy's familiararity with Jer's style and the hooks.

The Raleigh show was great also. I had a feeling about Scarlet Fire Eyes, and when I saw Branford it was confirmed. I had a hard time finding the groove in the first set, being unfamiliar with the new tunes kind of left me hanging, that's my problem, I guess i'll always be the newbie, but after seeing what Warren can do w/the Jerry tunes at the 'roo I wanted more of that. Warren on crazy Fingers maybe? It was kind of the night of 1000 teases for me. I was pretty sure the jam opening the 1st set was going to be Stranger and when the older couple on tour sitting next me were patting me on the back for the good call, the Music Never Stopped, "In my face!" So I guess that threw me off balance. Second set and the opening jam they do everything but play Dark Star, Teased it so hard we were drooling. Then Playing, a killer spacy jam playin but not Dark Star right? Then Playing into..... Low Spark??? OK Scarlet Begonias yesw, Hart with Fire, used to have that rehersal tape w/his rap version and loved it so this was cool he really flubbed Jerry's verses but rallied at the end with the "out of the frying pan into the fire" verse. Allright Scarlet, Fire, Hart fucked on a little but I thought made a nice save, the groove picked back up we are ready ahhh yes Branford is here, take us into...wait a complete stop in the music a total break The Wheel?!?!? Finally got the Eyes of the World and it was excellent. But at what cost? Just kidding it wasn't that dramatic I guess I may have issues with being wrong, I promise to work on that fellow Zoners. So it was a really good show just a little herky jerky disjointed to me and the guys seemed to lay out on some grooves waiting for Branford to take over. Stoked to see Branford with the boys again though.

I have been following the reviews and was surprised at all the Bob bashing, at Bonnaroo he was absolutely perfect, and it was Phil with the only miscue. But after Raleigh I see what ya'll mean. i can relate to his confusion though, am very sympathetic. Bob has always been a great showman and still is imho. What is this about Jimmy ending things, ending WHAT things? Ya'll have a great show tonight in ATL. Love Ya, G-Land.

P.S. To the topless lady selling veggie wraps on Shakedown in Raleigh, Will you be my Mom??

Just re-read the post that gave me anxiety about Jimmy leaving the band. "ending this chapter so close to home", yeaah yeah, right, right Jimmy is from North Carolina and the last 2 shows were NC and now GA for the last show of the tour, "ending this chapter", Right Big Mac, that is what you mean, no? Jimmy is certainly accomplished and we are very lucky to have him suiting up for our side every night. I remember him with Col. Bruce and the AQR, really sick. Hey, I saw Col. bruce for the first time in years last month in Kill Devil Hills, with the Code Talkers and my calf muscles were sore for a week after from all the dancin' and just plain stupid an goofy jumping up and down.
Peace, G-Land

I'd love to hear Black Muddy, and I'm assuming Phil feels like the time is right to bust it out. I was just interested cause there are some songs that are so closely tied with Jerry, and I was interested to hear that the one Phil felt that way about was Black Muddy River. Here's hoping WH did it justice. One thing that boy can do, it's sing.

Did Warren sing BMR ???? please tell me yes

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Billy Blastoff (Billyray) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 02:47 pm: Edit Post

Yes Warren sang BMR. I personally didn't feel like he had walked along it the same way Jerry had... but I don't know him and then who really does?

The Milestones was great. As was the ABB Tribute inside of Space. I need to hear it again to identify the songs but there were elements of most of the Fillmore instrumentals. They played the high points without the rhthm guitar section. I'll throw on Fillmore East and try to figure it out.

All in all the Dead played some of the most sophisticated music I've ever witnessed.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Hoff (Eore) on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 02:56 pm: Edit Post

There are many many many songs that are "true Jerry songs" and the remaining boys pull them all off to one degree or another. Too many to mention, although, Loser, Dupree's, Ripple, Standing on the Moon, The DEW..... come to mind... I see no reason why BMR is any more special than the one's I've mentioned... or any other "Jerry tune" that they still keep alive. I'm not surprised they pulled it out, it appears there is nothing these guys won't take a risk with....Thats what makes them and every tune they do so very very special. I for one am one HAPPY GRATEFUL DEAD HEAD... I saw SPAC, HARTFORD, and nite 2 at PNC and was pretty much left speechless at each show at one point or another, each show I attended was very very good, and I was highly impressed. Different from the old days but very good regardless... We have all been truely blessed. These guys still make it Happen..... Thank YOU!! For a Real Good Time...

A review from my friend who also went to marysville

I asked him how the show was....

>>>>>>
Poor. I went with a friend from work who'd never seen the Dead (Grateful or otherwise), who said it best: "Every time they would build up some momentum, they would do something stupid and lose it."

For starters, I committed the cardinal mistake of going there with high expectations. I figured it was end of tour ... they haven't been dropping the old stuff for the past several shows ... Branford a few nights ago ... we're in for a great setlist, maybe a special guest or two!

I really thought the first 3 songs were the most sustained high point of the show. It was great to see Keep On Growing. But for the rest of the night, Warren was the king of buzzkill. For example: worst China Cat ever (in the debriefing emails this morning, one old-school Deadhead friend called it "slow and inarticulate.") But it was like they realized that it was terrible, and they moved real quickly into the "Know You Rider" part of the transition jam, and then the Rider itself was actually pretty good. So momentum was turning for the better ... then up steps Warren with ... Black Muddy River ?!?!? Talk about a downer. Or what about following a U.S. Blues with "You Remind Me"? Who the hell does that?

All in all, a big letdown. I thought the Morning Dew encore was the highlight of the show -- very, very good. I didn't notice the alleged Instrumental "Bid You Goodnight." Coming out of Drums, Warren and Jimmy did a little Allmans jam before everyone else came out. It was real spacey and abstract, but it was definitely there. Lasted about 3 minutes. I wish I could remember what song it was -- I can hear it, and I thought it was Hot 'Lanta, but I listened to a clip of Hot 'Lanta online and that's not it. Dunno.

All told, the show gets a 4/10. During the Dew, I thought about pushing that up to a 4.5 or even a 5, but following the Dew with Touch knocked it back down to a 4. That was the story of the night, though.

China Cat was performed in an ARTICULATE and slow timing. The Rider was vocally outstanding as was the breakdown in He's Gone. (IMHO)

No reviews yet? Ok, I'll be the 1st then. Here's the deal on last nites show.
First off lemme just say overall show was pretty fukin weak. Full of nice moments in each individual song, but nothing over the top. Pretty standard show. No creative transitions or mind blowing shit here. Just a faily standard lackluster show. YMMV of course, this music and the experience that goes along with it is so subjective, so this was MY experience. Sound was not as loud or warm as last year and last year was a much better show I think, even if this line up is better. I knew when I saw that Branford came out in Raleigh and then Charlotte one upped it, that they wouldnt have shit left for the highly anticipated last show of the tour, but the Dead never played well under expectations anyway(Bring back the fuking Q--they don't disappoint!). The show was a taping nitemare due to the fucking assholes shouting next to us and all the tension that created in the taper section. Yes, we tapers may be buzz killers, but I'm gonna go ahead and assume that no one wants to hear shouting assholes on these tapes. The tapes are a major part of this scene and if you enjoy having them, it would be nice if you shouted and carried on AWAY FROM THE TAPERS! Any way....sorry for the personal rant. Just was very annoying last night. The majority of peeps are respectful:-)
Heres the play by play:
set1
Sugar mag--nice, good energy, but standard
Keep on growin--YES!! loved it!
Dont ease--cool:-). break out? fun to hear.
A little peice for you--Phil!:-) I dig it, but still getting used to it.
BE Women--Pretty cool--smoked hard for about 20 seconds. Jam out of it was the goods though. Too bad it was only 3 min long:-(
Down the road--I dig this tune, but where are the gems? 1st set almost over. Are they saving it up??
Time never ends--Cool tune. Sounds like strange world. Again, where are the gems?
Truckin--Standard. Nothing special here. Had some nice moments.

Set 2
US Blues--Knew it was commin'. Coulda done without. Oh well...
You remind me--WTF?? Energy pulled way back. I actually enjoyed the song and the jamming in it was great. Kind of a sleeper.
China>Rider--Kicked ass! the playing in china was about as good as it gets:-). Then rider--maintaining energy, but again, very standard.
Black muddy river--OK, looks good on paper. After the intense China>Rider it sucked ass! ZZZZZZZZZZZ...
Milestones--YES!!!!! Fucking finally!! God Damn this was good!!!
Drums--started a VERY cool groove for about 40 sec and then stopped! WTF??? Went into some electronica-ish drums. OK...I can dig it. Progressive is good--then it was over! Very short:-(
Space--This was the goods! Way out there with Shanendoah theme and some Allman teases. Very cool. Very Allman Bros:-). Mtn jam out of that would have been great, but no...
He's gone--zzzzzzzzzzzz. fukin snoozer!
GDTRFB--More standard crap I coulda done with out.
Lovelight--Killer! Good energy. Well jamed, but short.
SSDD--Predictable. Nice that the whole show was a sandwich, but more standard stuff.

E--Moring Dew!!--YES!!! Kicked major ass! Good stuff!!
Touch--OK.....good energy boost, but thats about it.
Can wait to listen to Raleigh and Charlotte shows. That was where the action was.

Aw is the only one at show .?.

Why not check meetings and gatherings for Atlanta dad....Half the lawn was empty first set was slow as a matter of fact once Mickey sang I abandoned a 10th row seat never to return. I was aying "its time for something I hadnt heard this tour" then bam Black Muddy River and the rest of the show was real good. I started the show almost at the very front of Lakewood and ended it near the back on the lawn.

The GDTRFB is missing from the setlist on the mainpage...for whoever updates that stuff...

AWESOME show last nite...that's all i got to say...if you think otherwise you either don't get it OR you're one of those uptight, anal fans who think only this or that make a great show...in which case, i think maybe you should stay home next time...

ps...i sat 2nd row last nite (not to gloat!) SO that probably swayed my opinion a little!!!

I went to Charlotte and Atlanta and wanted to chime in just a bit. Got front row directly between Warren and Jimmy for Charlotte (Thanks so much, Ruby) and was in the aisle about 5 rows right in front of Phil in Atlanta. I think the ear monitors can be useful at times, but overall feel they diminish the music. For instance – in Atlanta, Bobby said something into the mike that was not over the pa (thus on-stage only) as China Cat started and Phil grimaced and stopped playing. I think Bobby wanted it slower. In the days of the GD, there was not such a blatant way to influence the music – if someone wanted to take the jam faster or slower or somewhere else, they had to flex their musical muscles and perhaps it would happen and perhaps not. That’s the truest improvisation. There was also a similar interaction between Phil and Bobby right before West LA in Charlotte – Phil grimaced. I saw only those two shows of the tour, and have to admit I had preconceptions – I don’t like 3 guitarists on stage – even these three. There’s less ‘room’. Bobby’s rhythm is less accentuated, and that’s a shame. In Charlotte, at least, Jimmy was really the star of the show – perhaps making up for the relative backseat he took to Branford the night before. I really did sense palpable tension on a number of occasions between Bobby and Phil, and that was a major bummer. In the scheme of things, Bobby needs Phil more than Phil needs Bobby (Ratdog headlining the places plq does – YEAH RIGHT!), so Bobby needs to chill a bit. I mean, Phil actually stopped playing in each of the last two shows and just looked at Bobby as if ‘you want it this way, fine, get it going and I’ll join in’. Also, I have to say that while I like Jeff, and understand he probably won out over Rob just so Bobby could keep the semblance of a ‘balance of power’ in the Dead, he’s not the level of player Rob is. I heard many things from Jeff that would go over fine in Ratdog (hit wrong, dissonant notes and call it Jazz) but detracted from the Dead. Please let’s have a PLQ tour this fall! This band is so far better than not having this band, and I know they were tired at the end of the tour, but the disconnect between Phil and Bobby was alarming. If they can’t get over it, let’s go back to my preferred solution – Bobby playing 1000 person clubs and Phil raging with his own band. By the way – Aquarium Rescue Unit in Athens, for their 1st official show in 10 years – Georgia Theater. Be There!

Wow....mixed reviews for sure.

Here is my take...I went to CLT and ATL. They were very different shows for sure, but I liked them both.

My review of CLT is in that folder. As for ATL...I thought that the show, from a technical perspective, was excellent. I do not agree with the poo poo on China Cat above. I thought that the slow methodical approach was nice. Ditto on the Rider vocals. Vocally, this band rocks. Warren's steady strength holds Phil and Bobby together.

Lot's of nay sayers for BMR. I woke up this morning with BMR in my head and have not been able to get it out. When my buddy woke up, I said, "That BMR must have really got to me last night cause I can't get it out of my head." He freaked and said, "you have got to be kidding, I have been laying here for about an hour with that song running through my head." It is my humble, but extremely accurate opinion that Warren is the ONLY musician to do justice to the Jerry slow tunes and lullabyes.

Best moment: Milestones!
Weirdest moments....20 people on stage during drums.
Most eye-catching moment...that hippy chick who had no top on and only had her nipples painted with sunshines...
Worst moment...freaking 20$ to park! The official lots were full when we got there! aarrggh

transplant east coaster out west that remembers when the dead out played out here and the west coasters were complaining about song placement (BTW, the DEAD can play any songs in any placement that freakin want! Its hard as a muscian to sustain high levels of energy and be able to play so fast and so hard for a long time....you need to reel back sometimes and chilll......I.E..."they play BMR after that raging china>rider??? WTF......?????" Thats a perfect example....be happy you got to see that shit....sometimes musicians need to chill to get the tone and or unity they need to make it sound good for you!!!!

ANYWAY, back to original point, its now east coaster doin what those west coasters were doin, challenging parts of the show, asking why songs were placed in certain spots, complaining about lack of energy...for some reason I see more negative than positive...lets remember these guys are out there makin music year after year....they shred....WARREN has the most ridiculous touring schedule ever....how soon after is he on his MULE~tour? Anyway, we all had high expectations and personally I think they were all met in one form or another....

BTW, after careful review, i'd have to agree the Bonorroo sounds the best to me! DAMN, though that Rolling Stone from Bristow is REALLY good:-)

>>>>>>I see no reason why BMR is any more special than the one's I've mentioned... or any other "Jerry tune" that they still keep alive

Only because Phil said that it was the one he would have the most difficulty playing because of what he felt was the heavy Jerry connection. Made it a surprise to see that they played it, but I dig that song.

gr8ful Dad, I understand what your saying and also that everybody has their own take and gets something different out of the experience. All I know is I went to Grateful Dead shows to get that "It" which cannot be found anywhere else. Jerry use to talk about the "it" saying "it" did not happen every show but when "it" did, it was beyond words. Anyways that "it" remains at PLQ and Ratdog. However on this tour I found that "it" was not around much. "It" was there once in a while and could be found at every show but "it" did not stay from song to song and there were reasons why "it" left namely Mickey's singing, Warren's classic rock covers, and the 3 guitarists which I think is just too much. I'm not saying we should go back to the Grateful Dead since we all know that is impossible. I am just commenting on this peticular band. I will say that I found last Summers version of the "Dead" to have more "it" than this summers. Though I do not like Joan singing Jerry's ballds. I admit Warren sings them better. The music last summer contained more "it" than this Summers in my estimation. All my opinion of course but I am sure some deadheads know what I'm talking about.....peace.

Elsha, I appreciate your perspective...but it seems to me that there was and still is varying levels of "it." The Jerry "it" is gone, and I am so sad about that. However, and even through I only got to go to CLT and ATL....I thought that there was some "it"...though not Jerry "it."

I am not bashing you at all. I understand, totally. Maybe our perspective of "it" is in the old "it" and it could be that we (and I include me in this) are missing some of the new "it." I have been so impressed with their technical stuff that I am thinking that this new level of techincal performance might be the new "it" for the band? ATL was my first Milestones....it was nice work at the beginning from a technical perspective...then...

they turned that thing into a Dead jam that had me grinning.

Just a thought. Hugs.
G

interesting notes from the show
despite opinions of those out there. I loved
'It Reminds Me' one of my favorites of the night. They can really build it up with that bluesy rythym, the subtle interplay btwn Warren, Jimmy and Bobby was great on this one. I want to hear more.

Milestones- real nice suprise, loved it
Drums- jamming with the road crew- so much energy filling the house it was a great new approach to drums maybe next itme they can invite people up on stage or hand out kazoos and we'll all chime in. Have to say I really enjoyed Mickeys and Billy's playing both nights. Inspiring Healing Rythyms
Space- jam w/ Jimmy and Warren I believe it was Les Brers (in A minor), just a little tease but nice nonetheless
GDTRFB - a lovely but awkward moment when Bobby does a little helicopter gesture, everyone steps up to harmonize then Bobby falls back and strikes a dis-chord that just ends the song. I loved it, good to see the Merry pranksters are still kickin'. or does Bobby forget this ain't Ratdog and the band doesn't know his little hand signals. Most of all I really dug the reference of calling out the security in the lot pre-show, with undercovers and five0 showing there little nasty displays of uneeded aggression. good call Boys
Going down the road feelin bad
Going down the road feelin bad
goin down the road feelin bad oh bad
I don't want to be treated this old way!!!

We Bid You Goodnight- always nice to hear, had that real classic dead sound
Lovelight- short but scintilating
Morning Dew>Touch of Grey - boy what a way to close out the tour. they just rocked the Dew, Warren at the helm, taking us down then lifting us all up through the stratosphere and beyond. Touch - I just love it, it gave me that glowing feeling as I's walkin' out the door. All in all a real classic summer Dead show, lots of
sing-a-longs , yes more laid back then Charlotte or others but that's the Grateful Dead for ya filled with twist and turns, never knowing what's around the corner. Thank You all for a real Great time!!!

In regard to the lack of "mind blowing shit" and "interesting transitions" - No offense but anyone expecting these guys to play like they did pre-1993 on a consistent basis is kidding themselves. The Dead is not capable and probably not willing to take it to that next level at this point in their careers. They know people will pay $60 no matter what they do. The band goes out and tries to have a good time first, and impressing the crowd is the last thing on their minds. Just see the strict curfew adherence and its affects on the setlists. THIS IS NOT A NEGATIVE POST HOWEVER!! PLEASE REALIZE THAT BY STEPPING ON THE STAGE, THE DEAD ARE PROVIDING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FANS TO DO WHAT THEY'VE ALWAYS DONE - ANTICIPATE BEFORE THE SHOW AND PRAISE OR CRITICIZE AFTERWARDS. THIS IS THE GREAT PART OF THESE TOURS AND BEATS THE HELL OUT OF THE OTHER CRAP THAT THE MASSES HAVE CONVINCED THEMSELVES ARE SUFFICIENT REPLACEMENTS FOR THE GD (Phish and WSP). Thanks to the Dead and everyone who has posted positive and negative reviews on this site. You made my summer.

hello all
this was the last show and it was pretty middle of the road.
better than charlotte for sure though. I put it up there w/ a slightly better than deer creek status. The set list is pretty impressive but it was a very uneven show.
Highlights to me were He's Gone, BMudRiver, Dew, Dont ease me, and lovelight.
lowpoints were China cat: total trainwreck, the drums were going slow and the riff was to fast, ugly very ugly, the rider was pretty good tho.SSDD was pretty bad also, very sloppy. Truckin aside from being overplayed was not so good this night, even the vamp up at the end, bob kept going while all was quiet, totally out of synch! Tired they seem tired.

the weird thing is charlotte and atlanta were two of the weaker shows i saw but the sound was mixed the best. I could hear Phil and Jeff way better @ these 2 venues than say creek, tweeter boston, or spac. That said the playing was dissapointing, as was the overall song selection.
no terripan, no HSF, no momentum, just a good tune then a crappy tune then a trainwreck, then a good tune etc etc....

I believe honestly the tour was too long and the boys should only play 2 days in a row. 3rd nights consistently sucked all tour and 1st and 2nd nights were the best.

The scene in Atlanta was the worst of the tour. I saw at least 30 kids arrested. I saw two guys beat each other. I saw two sisters fight on shakedown one broke the other ones face majorly with a fuckin mag light, she was a narc i was told as i tried to break it up. She was half dead by the time the venue staff got there, all the pigs were busting people smoking bowls all the while ignoring the nitrous.....her face was gushing blood.

one way or another this darkness got to give...
time to go on smaller tours or smaller venues or something boys...ive never been this bummed since i made the mistake of going to a phish show in 96, disheartened, sad, wondering if peace is possible if we the deadheads have to beat each other up until people die...

the tour all together was fun, musically it had many valleys but some good peaks (boston 1st night was schweet), and the scene was pretty mellow. I will go back but not for as many shows, too many valleys for some of the long hauls i drove this tour......

I love you Boyz keep on keepin on, please please can we have NYE east coast????

ill be your best friend.

So...made it home from Atlanta.

All in all I had an enjoyable time. Had a hotel in north Atlanta and used MARTA to get around. Kind of sketchy sometimes, but really we had no problems.

Got to the venue early enough to hear a Keep On Growing, Don't Ease Me In, and A Little Piece For You soundcheck. This just helped to build the anticipation.

Warren Haynes was great.

First Set opened with Sugar Magnolia. My first thought was that the boys had come ready to play. It was a nice solid version, and gave me high hopes of what was to come. I expected them to hold off on the Sunshine Daydream part...and they did. Next came Keep On Growing. PLQ helped me to fall in love with this tune, and my enjoyment of it was only slightly dampened by having heard it during soundcheck. Same with Don't Ease My In. A Little Piece For You felt abrupt in that it seemed to interrupt the flow of the set. Maybe its just because I'm not used to it (Actually, it was the first time I had ever heard it, so perhaps I'll get used to it). Brown Eyed Women picked teh energy back up, but it was the short jam out of the song that was brilliant. Warren had some nice guitar work going on in there.
Down the Road Again. What can I say? It seems like I get this tune almost every show I see. Though I suppose if I was forced to choose a Mickey Hart song, this one would be it.
Time Never Ends. I can't do anything but ask: Why?
Truckin was okay. It was good, but nothing special.

Did anyone else notice that right before the band came back from setbreak an airplane was flying by, and just as it came overhead the band walked out on stage? No? Okay...moving on...

U.S. Blues kicked ass in my opinion. I thought they did this really well.
China>Rider was fantastic as always. In the jam into China Cat it sounded to me like they were actually going into Viola Lee Blues and then suddenly changed into China Cat. Don't know for sure if thats what happened, but I enjoyed it immenseley.
Black Muddy River- Warren sang it well.
Milestones>Drumz/Space>He's Gone. All very cool and very well done. The interaction between Warren and Jimmy is top-notch. I also found a new appreciation of Chimenti at this show. He accents the band really well and found some really cool runs during some of the jams.
The rest was all great too. My ADD has kicked in and I'm tired of typing. Goodnight.

Yes, I was impressed by the light show as well.

Did anyone else notice how the stage setup looked kinda like a Steal Your Face? The inside of those things that looked like Jerry's hands was the round part of the head, Mickey had a couple of drums that acted as the nose, and the band an their equipment was the rest. Or was I just hallucinating?

honestly i thought the light show was pretty amateur. The stage props looked thrown together and cheap.

I personally dont go to a dead show for the lights so i dont care, but the sets for the last 2 summer tours seem pretty low budget to me.

all they need is a big steal your face like winterland 79 let the show speak for itself, if I want lights Ill go to phish show.

Two things...

1) go try Railroad earth if you want it factor again. It doesn't work for everyone but it works for a lot of people. And the more I know their music the more I like them. Go to a show before you buy an album.

2) My friend who worte the orginal post is now in love with you. LOL

Alas, we all see it differently...

I was in the 14th row on Thursday night and the set list is a lot better than the show was. No question Raleigh was a better show and both of them are subpar compared to Bristow, VA.

As my wife said: "How the hell can Bob not remember the words to Sunshine Daydream?"

Weak China Cat. Overall about a B- for Dead shows for Atlanta.

Hey, that's why you go to several - of the 4 I saw in the last two weeks we got one that was amazing in DC, one pretty damn good in Raleigh, one that was kinda par or lower in Atlanta and one that totally sucked (first night PNC in NJ). I'll take em.

on to the show....Hotlanta...highlights...the sug mag...keep on growing Brown eyed women Trucking...I even think Bobby had all the words right...lots of fun high energy...Us Blues was ok...but I really enjoyed the YOU remind me....was a sweet laid back psychedelic grove with a funky beat all la that would be something just sweet as hell....China...was trippy or maybe it was me-), kinda on the slow side...but as we went into rider...the rider was on...all hands on deck...just rocking....Black muddy river,,,,tears...just somewhat of a slow down if ya know what I mean after such a rocking rider...but was sweet

drums was awesome to short for me...but was neat to see over 30 drummers on stage with the boys....the He's gone...was as cool as they come...GDTRFB...never really made it off the ground...but the lovelight was very very good....Dew was ....man Dew was awesome but again another slow tune and we are running late....Touch was ok but seems as we where going through the motions.....

All in All a very fun three days... like i said like an oreo cookie two standerd shows with the cream filling in the middle-)...I thank my lucky starts every night that I have such a wonderful wife that understands how much days like these mean to me....I also thanks em for the wonderful friends I have that make the magic happen still for me and help the dreams I still believe come true... as for our band...I think I hope and I pray.... we still have days that are still to come where we can just ride...to make it just one more day or laugh the past away....

love yall Ya freaks-)

>>>We Bid You Goodnight(no vocal)>

No, it was most definetely the end of He's Gone not "Bid You", done the old way, not the Phil way.

Black Muddy River is nada without Jerry. Cannot believe I just said that, but, alas, true. Thus far, first tune that not even Warren can carry. (and yes, I think Bonnie Raitt's and Hornsby's versions stunk also.)

I gotta disagree with ScottR on Atlanta and PNC, and it was nice meeting you, btw.

More later.

Got to Atlanta, and lost all the pcs in the house to some killer viruses. Two that Norton didn't even catch.

Now I want to write a review...bugger on.

I gotta see it in writing...

No matter what my brother is thinking I am free to think for myself...

The 'Bid You Goodnight' was just the traditional end of Goin' Down the Road, though Bob did lead the group through a little extended ending to GDTRFB that was, uh, creative.

Joshua, think what you want. I thought it was thin, and I am one of the great Warren fans of all time. It didn't suck, it just didn't work.

dewit,
I agree the sound is weird but for some reason this tune was what I needed.

The lyrics: I will walk alone

thats how I felt on this tour, so disconnected to the band and the heads. It just wasn't that kind of a vibe. I will return next tour and hopefully my head space will be better, im sure some of it was internal.

chant down BC schwag

see ya on tour

I liked the ATL show better than CHL. I thought at times it was going to be a "great" show, but the 3 new tunes were a crowd bummer. Highlights of the first set from the 11th row were: Sugar Mags,Keep on Growing, B.E. Women and an average Truckin'. The 2nd set was much better w/ a: U.S. Blues, China > Rider, and He's Gone. Milestones and GDRFB was so fucking cool and then the DEW was our favorite. Closed out w/ Touch, had a nice feel to it. Not as great as expected, but we all had fun.

Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre was completely rockin' and spiraling out of control for most of the second set.

The house went nuts for China>Rider, Lovelight, Morning Dew was HUGE.

The Drums section with alot of people on stage banging on stuff was very moving as well.
