Yeah so this was a killer show, probably top 10 live music events of the year for me. Gun Outfit is a band of four from Los Angeles (via Olympia). They're great, four young peeps with primary vocals shared between the two central songwriters, the nucleus of the band, Carrie Keith and Dylan Sharp. The sound oscillates somewhere between desert rock a la Green On Red or a sort of bent version of 80s cowpunk, definitely more on the Meat Puppets side of things, with a strong dash of early/mid 70s Neil Young. Still, all that said, the instrumental arrangements have a dark bent all to themselves and the band, live, have an inclination towards the ambient / experimental, which is great. On the recently issued LP, Dream All Over, a lot of those arrangements have the added flourish of homemade electric sitar, or traditional Russian folk instruments, providing fills. The band drew heavily on that batch of a dozen songs but also treated the audience to material less familiar for those of us who have only hopped aboard their bandwagon in the last few weeks. Paradise of Bachelors has scored another killer group of young musicians / songwriters with their last release, and Gun Outfit's collection of songs represent some of the best of 2015. It's going to be a great to watch this duo as they mature and the musicians playing with them help to embrace that idiosyncratic, west coast vision.
