Raleigh is usually pretty chill. They'll let ya have fun, just be nice and courteous. Do the cup thing. There are a few lots that are kinda spread out. Overall Fun Place. Charlotte is about the same, they just don't care for a big "Shakedown". Charlotte Cops like sporatic vending. Either place, ya can't go wrong. If your going to Atlanta, no worries at all. Well I guess there is one, PARK ONLY IN OFFICIAL PARKING LOTS, ang go out the venu the same way you came in. Or you will have trouble finding your car. Lots of Southern Fun ahead. Enjoy!

I envy ya'll going to Raleigh, Charlotte and Atlanta. I wish I could do all three.

Unfortunatley, money's tight, the show's ain't free...that's why it'll only be Atlanta for me.

I guess I'll just have to cram three day's of fun into one afternoon and evening.

See ya on Shakedown.

Alright folks! Whadda ya think we'll hear tomorrow? Here's a few I'm thinking of - Ratdog: Looks Like Rain, Estimated, Eyes, Jack Straw. TOO* (minus Mickey): Sugar Mag, NFA>GDTRFB, Unbroken Chain P&F: Scarlet Begonias, Cold Rain & Snow, Mason's. Also, the Raleigh show is starting about an hour earlier than last night's Portsmouth show. Think we'll get a little more TOO*??

I'd say we're going to hear some twisted spinoff of Dark Star>St. Stephen>The eleven, maybe with a NFA in there somewhere. Phil hasnt broken out dark star in weeks, and he's gone through a lot of the standbys in the past few nights. I'd really like to hear mountains of the moon, personally. i dont think its been played on this tour at all. as far as ratdog goes, i dont care what they play as long as it isnt Odessa. I love the guys to death, and the vast majority of their material is great, but i just cant get into odessa. oh, everyone check out Space Station Integration on the side stage. www.spacestationintegration.com

HEY GUYS. KEEP AN EYE OPEN TONIGHT...I SAW THIS ON THE OTHERONES MESSAGE BOARD...

Help! My daughter Chelsey has been following bands from Ohio to New York, New Jersey, Maryland, etc. She was suppose to be home in Hampton, VA on Monday July 22, she was planing on attending the concert (Bob Weir) in Portsmouth, VA on Tuesday .

I wired money to here in PA on Sunday, but the money was never picked up, and noone has heard from her since Sunday. Chelsey was calling every couple of days to let me know she was OK. I don't think she ever reached Virginia.

Chelsey is 24 years old, very pretty (often mistaken for being an Indian), has long brown hair and brown eyes. Has been a faithful follower of Grateful Dead for years.

Please if anyone knows Chelsey or has seen her contact me ASAP. This is not like Chelsey at all, and I really fear something has happened to her.

I can be contacted by e-mail or by phone (757) 825-6399.
Thank you for replies so far. My daughter Heidi has also posted a bulliten on Ratdog message board. I am trying to find digital camera to take a picture of her photo. The next concert is set in Raliegh, NC tonite at Altel Pavillion, and then in Charlotte NC. please if anyone sees her contact ASAP. We do know that at previous shows she was selling grilled cheese sandwiches and beer for money. She drives a teal sunfire or sunbird with Virginia plates. Thank you all. "Has anybody ever asked Warren why he so often leaves the stage when Weir guests?"

great question.. pure speculation here, but i'd imagine sometimes "three's a crowd" within the limitations of the particulair songs in which he steps out.. too busy.. yes you can have 3 or 4 guitarists but ala the way he stepped back into "cassidy" at the end jam part of the song - that is much more space in that part of a melody or song and is perfect for all guitarists to layer over one another, etc.. and also for that much ego on stage!!!

it sure seems weird cuz on one hand - it looks bad, on the other - it respects the original "crusader rabbit" formation.. and gives bobby a certain level of respect to just take over.

wonder if warren will guest in the reunion shows??

love phil and any formation of his group, but certainly favoring the quintet - best band current on planet earth. "LOVE IS REAL"

Alpine is going to be great. It will be fun to hear all these great Dead songs played a little more grateful deadish. I love PLQ, they are fabulous and we are damn lucky to have them with us, but it will be fun to hear the other ones also. If Phil is involved it will be done right. No more second fiddle like at the end of the Dead right before Jerrys death. Phil is the boss now. I think the success and pure awesomeness of the PLQ shows that.

I would really like to see Warren out there with Bobby for JACK STRAW. Let em trade off the lyrics like it used to be done a la Jerry/Bobby. This seems like the perfect song for those two to be out on stage together.

Was it just me or did anyone else think hte energy dropped a bit when Warren left the stage? That's not much to complain about. It was a great show. Barraco handled vocals on part of Jack Straw.

well as much as it distresses me that we miss even seconds of possible warren action (PWA) I have resolved myself to the fact that whatever the reasons; this is the way it is going to be.

If Warren feels the need to leave, for whatever reason, be it clashing egos (which I doubt at this stage) or too many cooks in the stew (which I hope), I trust in the fact that Warren's motives are fueled by a need to serve the music well.

Regardless of motive they are playing great and continuously so I again put my trust in the powers that be and go with the flow instead of worrying my head about it.

literally days now till ALPINE...so juiced

between having Jimmy and Rob sit in for a good portion of the Ratdog set and then having just Bob and Jimmy on guitars during Cassidy struck me as more Pre-Alpine feeling each other out than anything ego related. With Chimenti out there as well this WAS the Other Ones minus Billy and Mickey... I was surprised Billy K never came out... It's also clear that Jimmy is more and more becoming THE lead guitarist in this band, though the second set interplay between he and Warren was phenomenal. As much of a Phil & Friends purist I think myself, the fact of the matter was the mixed line-up sounded VERY good...nice to see Bob genuinely trying to just be a band member vs. leader. At several points during T. Jed he seemed tentative on where to fit in between Jimmy and Warren's playing so he took a step back. The vibe between them all seemed genuinely amiable, Warren included. Was nice to hear a very soulful Tastes Like Wine.

Set two was a kaleidoscopic smilefest, Jimmy grinning like a mule eating briars much of the time, blurring fingers blistering lead after lead... Phil looking around, shaking his head at riff after riff, grinning broadly. From the first notes of Tomorrow Never Knows you got the feeling this was one was going to go way out there and I kept wondering when the momentum was going to shift, when will the There And Back Again tune appear?

Never happened. The intensity continued to build all the way through the set. This was my first Low Spark and Mountains, so they were probably my highlights, but was also very cool the way the Other One kept peaking in and out, I also caught a pretty strong Eleven reference going into the second verse of Dark Star. I've got a pretty strong notion those two may appear tonight or in Atlanta. Rider closer was classic, vocals strong. Big hugs on the stage, HUGE cheers for the local boys Warren and Jimmy. Passenger was the perfect close. What I took from this show was the future may be on the horizon but in the meantime this Bus has plenty of juice left in the tank.

marpensy - you are correct. He's Gone is going to rip like all hell. I've been wanting PLQ to bust out that one.

Why does Warren leave? Sometimes "three's a crowd"? Hmmmm. That never seems to be a problem when they bring Derek Trucks out for entire sets :-)

Seriously, though. I don't think it's bad blood between Warren and Bobby. I agree with the "respecting the original Crusader Rabbit" theory. Also, Warren may be trying to give them space to work on the Other Ones thing.

And by the way (btw) Less Than...
...Possibile Warren Action (PWA)!! I love that!

Not to start anything....but I was front and center at the Kaiser on NYE, and when Warren left the stage during Sugar Mag, he was clearly irritated. (as was I) Why sugar-coat it? Bobby tends to direct the five legged beast rather than follow it.

But I like what was said above..."Bobby is trying to be more of a player and not a leader nowadays," so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Has anyone heard any details as to WHY the Dallas show was cancelled?!? I would have preffered a dull butter knife jabbed into my spleen.

Dang all the bands were good! For sure there was a lot of music to digest last night. I can't imagine anyone not finding that "zone" somewhere in all those wonderful sounds last night! I did notice that when Jimmy H. came out during Ratdog's set things really clicked nicely ("Cassidy" anyone?). The sound was pretty doggone good too!

I think the show was cancelled, because Phil needs to get some rest before the show at The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, MO. I have a feeling that Bobby, Billy & Mickey are all going to make a surprise appearance at The Fox, for a little rehearsal session before Alpine Valley. It's not entirely out of the question I mean, it is a 14 hour ride from Binghamton, NY which is where Ratdog and the Trichromes are playing July 31, but Mickey has a show that night in Apple Valley, MN. I don't think it's likely.

Stank,

I'm just curious. Why bother to say "Enjoy" regarding people wanting to see the Other Ones, and then go on to belittle the band and suggest they are just touring for the sake of nostalgia? Oh yes...sarcasm, that overused device of "humor" I tend to try to steer clear of as much as possible.

But in specific response to some of the things you said...sure, a band with the name "The Other Ones" toured in 1998 and 2000 (I should know, I went to shows on both tours). But that band did not consist of Mickey, Billy, Phil and Bobby all in the same band at the same time (except all too briefly in 1998 at Shoreline).

Did you ever see The Grateful Dead? That band wasn't about trying to be "hot" or "wail"; it wasn't about one man's vision or one man's name on the marquee or on an album cover. It was *not* the Jerry Garcia Band, the Bob Weir Band, or the Phil Lesh Band. It was a collective in which no one individual's vision ruled all, and the sum was greater than its parts. I'm of the opinion that those parts working *together* was the reason the Dead were light years above and beyond the Jerry Garcia Band, Ratdog, Go Ahead, Legion of Mary, Bobby and the Midnights, Seastones, Planet Drum, Mickey Hart Band, and--I dare to say it--Phil Lesh and Friends.

I was excited to see the Other Ones in 1998 and in 2000 because it offered me the chance at that GD "group mind" in a way that the various "solo bands", great as some of them are (Phil and Friends included), simply do not. And this year, with the "core four" in place, and *without* Bruce Hornsby, who IMHO is NOT a team player and is all about spotlighting *himself*, the Other Ones has the chance to be a manifestation of the real Grateful Dead such as we haven't seen it since 1995. So *that*'s why I personally am excited about the Other Ones in 2002.

And one more thing...I find it highly ironic that a post that mentions Phil Lesh and Friends in such a glowing light calls The Other Ones "nostalgia". Hmmm...last time I checked (this morning, checking the list from last night's show) P&F setlists still consist of 90-95% Grateful Dead songs. How is a band which plays 90% GD songs and has only *one* member who was a member of the GD somehow less nostalgic than a band (the Other Ones) with *four* former members of the GD in it?

"Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart, when I can hear it beat out loud"

Peace,
Clay

This was a great show....for me. More, after discs, get me the discs. Fire, Mountains, Candace, Passenger, aaaaaaaahhh Passenger. And somehow the best moment MIGHT be sitting in a muddy lot in a little grey car screaming into a cell phone at the top of our lungs
"BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!!!!!!!"
but it might have just been the seats.
man, this one was fun though.....serious fun....dark star and all....
(oh, and by the way...THAT'S NOT OUR CAR!!!!!!!" chucklechucklecheckyrbuckle)

clayboy, got no problem with your well thought out response. you made a lot of good points. will say one thing though, as much as i loved the dead, i also saw some SICK jgb shows equal to any dead show. (also saw some horrendous jgb shows) however on a good night, jgb was not to be outdone. re: other ones, break it down for a moment. the only difference this go around is the addition of one drummer, ONE DRUMMER! honestly that aint gonna change the music at all. listen to the shoreline tape with K, there's no difference. 2nd: theatre vs. hockey arena, come on. that's the beauty of plq, music in a small intimate surrounding. now you cut off warren, add bob and it's goodbye theatre. why. when these guys first came around they played all this old stuff which was great, viola etc. now everything has been played. there's nothing old left to play. what's the rush now to see this band. weir and chimanti, two drummers (you rally want mickey to sing) instead of the tight fivesome. why? when you break it down, i just don't get it. if you want to see weir you can see him at the 500-capacity bottle and cork in dewey beach and have a ball. why do you need to go to the garden to see him do the same songs just to stand next to phil. now alpine. except for the party (btw which we also had at merriweather) we had almost the entire other ones show, plq, hunter and tricromes. no need for alpline. but for the folks goin, i always wish everyone a good time.
