Does anyone know the schedule for the big show?
I know doors at 11:00 and show at 1:00 and I read on here somewhere that sat. is Phil>Mickey> Hunter>OtherOnes. Sun.Trichromes>Ratdog>Hunter>Other Ones.
saw ratdog recently at a 500 seat hall, not sold out. saw phil at a 12,000 capacity shed. again not sold out. just wondering how putting the two together and adding a couple of drummers that no one would go see either equals A QUARTER OF A MILL> just wondering.
Dude, it's like this :
The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.
get it ?
All of them plus Rob, Jimmy and Jeff...
Equal a good time..New blood that digs
the music...Plus they are all having fun
again..
PNC Phil was sold out...
Some for reasons known but to them
Rise, climb, fall, to get to Terrapin
Terrapin Station
And I know we'll be there soon.........
This is gonna be awesome guys. The math may not add up but the music sure does. Everyone party and have fun. Anyone hitting St Louis for Phil before they head up to Alpine?
In the shadow of the moon.... Terrapin Station!!! I'm leaving St. Louis the city of BLUES for Alpine Valley!!! Is anybody else on this message board crossing the "Big River" to get to Terrapin???
Hey John. I moving up to St Louis this weekend. Im hitting the Fox on Thursday then heading up to ALPINE. Get prepared, theres gonna be a party tonigt....
Hey Steven, Glad to know that you are moving to St. Louis, MO!!! You are going to fall in love with the city, it's a wonderful place to live!!! I'll be at the Phil @ The Fox show on Jerry Garcia's B-Day (Aug. 1st)!!! And then it's off to Alpine Valley for both shows!!! It's an easy 6 hour drive from St. Louis to Alpine Valley. Be prepared for a party... on all three nights... August 1st, 3rd & 4th!!!
Got the tickets! Can't wait to see ya'll there. My Phil Shows are finished until Alpine! I NEED A Tennessee Jed! REAL BAD LIKE, WICKED EVEN. I will continue to concentrate my energy in that arena, any help is appreciated, pull for the JED!!Party on people!! C-ya in E. Troy your friend Charlie!
I'll be in St Louis then Alpine....should we gather before The Phox...where abouts?
just been looking at the upcoming other ones tour dates. let's see if i've got this straight. in the past i've been able to see plq at awesome tiny places like the beacon THEATRE. however now that they've added two old drummers and the el paso kid and dropped their most precious commodity, warren, i'm supposed to dish out jack to see them in basketball arenas like the garden and mci. yea that makes a whole lotta sense to me.
I am totally stoked for the show...Does anybody out there think there is a chance of Donna showing up with the Other Ones like she has done in previous years????
i'm inclined to agree with stankmonkey. i'll take plq with warren anyday over ratdog or the other ones. don't mean to dis bob but jerry complimented him best. there was a chemistry there that no longer exists. somehow warren, jimmy, rob, phil, and molo pull it off. caught ratdog at the electric factory in philly earlier this year and was not impressed. saw plq six times since 99 (Temple Univ. w/ Dylan 99, Tower Theatre 2000, Asbury Park 2001, Camben 2001, Stabler Arena 2001, Cambden 2002) and three of the shows were out of hand - the other three shows still blew away ratdog. i saw the dead in their waning years and the first two incarnations of the other ones - neither came close to plq in their current line up. i'm sure plq with the drummers would be great but without warren it isn't the same. just my opinion.
oh, you gotta check out the other ones tour dates via dead.net. about thirteen shows tentavely scheduled depending on our behavior at terrapin. is this for the $? or is phil doing his old friends a favor? personally, i will miss warren if he is going to be out. bob weir is boring and he actually looks older than phil despite a considerable age difference in his favor. more nonsensical opinions. peace me sistas and brothas.
don't you guys sweat it! PLQ ain't done & over with yet... Alpine is going to be fun! Don't be so crictical of it all, just have fun!
ps: not only have you gotten rid of your best guitarist (warren) but also your best singer (warren). who's going to sing in this group, remember hornsby's not a member anymore so who is the singer? weir every song, phil>mickey oh nooooooooooooooooo.
So more Other Ones shows depends on our behavior? If there's no Other Ones @ the hockey barns then Phil Quartet plays the Orpheum and the Beacon? So we would get Phil doing Blues 4 Allah at a theatre instead of Bobby doing a slide solo on Rooster at the Garden? Let me see, Phil doing Viola Lee or Bobby doing Corrina? Hmmmmmm . . .
Wow, I've been waiting 28 years for this! I'm gonna get so F-ing trashed on X, Pharmies, Soapium, Tequila, Red Dog, I'm gonna bring 1,000 nitrous tanks, piss on the neighbor's bushes, break bottles on the town green, play Beastie Boys thru my megawatt sound system at 4 in the am, barf on the mayor's car . . . lets see, oh, yeah, I'm gonna print 50,000 fake Dave Mathews tickets and distribute them free at all colleges within 100 miles, let's see, ummmm, I'm running out of ideas here folks, help me!
Oh, Bobby w/ a beard - talk about scaring the children!
cheezy answers outta whatever will constitute as space every nite...
thanks goddess I'll be too big & preggo to make much of these~
(yay buns)
oh sorry to ruin YOUR good time. maybe you should check out the Mule site dude. it sounds like you got a real affection for Warren. wait was he in the Dead? I really like his playing but the overwhelming southern rock sound is a bit much for me sometimes. he is a monster player though.
maybe some people are being a bit shortsighted here.
WHO IS THE SINGER (besides barry manilow)
"who's going to sing in this group". Rumor as it that Bruce Hornsby might show up for the show on Sunday???
>bh might show up< 1) that aint gonna happen. 2)if you're counting on that and that's what you need, then that's my point. the group as it stands, except for weir, really aint got a singer. and if weir's the only singer, go see the poodles. NOT GOOD.
Personally I am a little disappointed with all this bashing. Lets think about this, these guys are trying to do us a favor. This is something that has not happend in several years, and you guys are making a big deal about Warren. Warren was never a member of the dead. He wasnt there through the years of touring these guys did. Did everybody forget that these guys are the orginals, the closet thing you will ever get to seeing the Dead. I think Jerry would be happy to see that the guys are trying to find that chemistry that everyone knows that they have. If you are so concerned about warren, than I am sure you will be happy to know that he is playing solo. So you can get your fair share of Warren. Dont get me wrong I love Warren Haynes. I think he adds alot to plq. But I think people will be surpprised after this is all over how incredible this really will be. I have had the good faith to see all of the boys bands lately and if several occasions got to to see a few of them playing together, and you can just tell how excited they are. For whoever said that they are just adding a couple of drummers that knowbody would go see. Well you need to get out more, I saw Mickey Hart at the Vougue Theatre last night and was very impressed, and he seemed to be having alot of fun.
So on that I look forward to seeing all of you that are truly excited for this event. For those who want to bash. Thats fine sell your tickets to some fans that really want to go, cause you know that there is a millon heads that would love to have that miracle. And about the comment on touring in big arenas, I think it is a great idea, it will be neat to see these guys in some big arenas and I am sure they have lots of supprises. See Ya At ALPINE!!!
i agree that mickey and billy add a whole lot to the mix. as for vocals, rob b. can do a killer jerry. i probably will end up catching the other ones in nyc and philly if the tour proceeds as planned. at the same time this a nostalgic event with the hopes of recapturing old times. plq have something creative and unique that ratdog lacks for sure. trichromes, whatever mickey is doing this summer (i plan on catching him at musicfest in bethlehem, pa shortly after terrapin) are probably great but i missed the trichromes this summer and cannot truly make an opinion. regardless, plq with warren rocks with a certain amount of spark that the other ones are unlikely to capture. the dead were great but the reunion reeks of something similar to a doors reunion - after all, without jerry it is unlikely that any of these guys would be able to draw the crowd predicted at terrapin. i'm sure anyone who attends will have a blast but the magic created by plq is unlikely to occur.
as far as "what jerry would want", he has been quoted as never wanting to turn into an oldies band that simply recreates what has already been done a zillion times. i support the former members of the dead pursuing their solo projects more than these cash generating venues that draw all sorts of troubles this scene does not need anymore.
I was just wondering - while we're in our cars for hours waiting to go in, what if you have to go to the bathroom. I called the Sheriff's Dept. and they basically sid "Tuff Shit - hold it in." They said they will arrest you if you go on the bushes.
Sir, may I borrow your Milk Jug? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone...
cant make it to terrapin but hope for the fall tour were i can catch a bunch of shows...did anyone ever think for a minute that warren didnt want to do TOO, he needs a little rest from these songs and some time w/hs band GOVT Mule and had allready set dates w/allman bros...jimmy seemed to have grown up on the dead/bay area thing, where warren is straight ahead rock/blues southern style....id love to see warren w/TOO(yes they do need a hand w/vocals because they probably wont let rob sing much w/is b.s.) but this line up is the best weve seen in years...as long as phil is in the mix and kimock and karan arent were doing good...
>warren was not a member of the dead< oh but baracco and chimney and herring with sour cream were? talking bout members of the dead, (this is a dead reunion) where's donna and vince. way to treat these guys. i guess it really is a long long long long way to go home.
I have a great idea. If you don't like whats going on don't go to the shows. There a plenty of people that want to go and for those of you that think it sucks thats fine. It just seems that all this bashing is a little premature. At least let the shows happen before you say they suck. Anyway for those that will be there it is gonna be a really fun time. Everyone be safe. Peace
think positive and everything will bo ok .
by the way I think you guys are about as cheesy as anyone with all your negative projections. What gives anyone the right to call other accoplished musicians cheesy. I think your reviews and your opinions are really shall i say it CHEESY SO CHEESE OFF IN WISCONSON. Bob Weir by far has the best voice in this line up it will be an honor to here him belt out the classics correctly.
>what gives us the right?< ummm how bout livin in america gives us the right, you know first ammendment and all. why don't you climb off your bong and read it sometime. PEACE.
it looks good from up here stanker. I think I'll just stay here for a while. peace
did you say vince.? oh my
chum vs baracco, dueling boards, when did this become a keys band
mayabe they'll play some elp or yes
Look- the truth is that Bobby can't sell tickets even if they were dipped in acid. When Phil took off on his own to explore the better side of the GD music he destroyed Grateful Dead Incorporated. No longer could they sell shirts and buttons and all that other crap to keep the machine going. This reunion is about cash only, period. I believe that Phil is happier in PLQ, and Bobby is happier doing his thing in Ratdog. And when they're both on tour I get to hear twice as much music. When they get together you just get mediocre versions of both that is only a hollow shell of what was. The Other Ones don't get "there" and never will.
And have fun in Alpine- the largest gathering of people who thought Woodstock II was better than the original.
PLQ has set the bar so high that it's hard to imagine having as much fun anywhere else. It's all about Warren and Jimmy ripping it back and forth, Phil dropping bombs and being the classical band leader that he is. John&Rob rounding out the quintet that has been tapping into the cosmic flow like no other since the Dead where doing their thing. On that note, the Dead where obviously about many things IMO the most spectacular magic came during the 60's. From psychedelic dixieland breaking down to one last shining single molecule and so on. The sum of all parts is true, Bobby has a great voice is true- but the bottom line is that when Phil was looping Jerry in like only he could do during a mind blowing Eleven,Viola whatever...this is where you could feel your soul elevating to the place where the groove is so sweet that only a Dead Head could know what I speak of. PLQ has been bringing this back with the thunder. IMO Garcia/Lesh/Hunter are the cosmic flash point of our scene. I like all of the other guys, big fan of Billy K...but I can remember back in late 80's when "it ain't easy being cheesy" Bobby shirts came on the scene. Lest we forget that Mickey missed the Wall of Sound tour because his Dad stole from the band(harsh but true) I understand where many of you guys who don't like the bashing are coming from, just understand that most of the bashing is taking place because we don't want to lose the magic that has been happening with these guys as of late. I have seen just about every combination of the remaining members of the Dead playing together...everything from the first Further Fest after Jerry at Liberty State Park where it was so depressing that I had to walk out during "Rider" to this past New Years where everyone in the house was grinning ear to ear at the stroke of midnight for NFA>Truckin...good stuff but it was nice to see PLQ+Trucks rip it until whenever the hell they finished. Anyway, I think TOO are fine as long as we also get a healthy dose of pure PLQ. Many folks are aware that TOO are possible because of Phils big heart and the success of PLQ. We all know of the recent issues regarding The Vault as well as Tiger and Wolf. Billy K was rather quite, it seemed to come down to Weir/Hart vs. Lesh /Hunter...Mickey going so far as to say that "Phil must have gotten the liver of an asshole" even though I found the entire situation disturbing>>check out Weirs interview in Relix last year<<I think that Lesh and Hunter where correct in standing their ground. I often wonder that if Phils band had fizzled rather that thrived would their treatment of him be the same??Thankfully this has not been the case. TOO should kick ass if Bobby doesn't cut off Jimmy all to often. I hope Alpine is a beautiful experience for all--I hope The TOO kick ass this fall----I JUST REALLY HOPE NYC GETS IT'S SPIRITS PICKED UP YET AGAIN WITH A MAJOR DOSE OF PLQ AT THE BEACON THIS AT SOME POINT IN THE NEAR FUTURE. Most importantly happy birthday to "THE SILVER HAIRED ANGEL"
Whatever everybody!!! I still would rather be at Alpine this weekend than anywhere else. Sunshine, music, crack a beer, puff a j, dance with a girl you've never met, smile a lot and just groove!! What would you rather be doing??
(but i would like Warren to play with them)
have fun dude...good luck with "the girl you've never met"
aaahhhhh that girl you've never met.......i think i know her, errr maybe not....oh well
I am new to posting to the zone. Love our magic since Rochester 85. I got it ! All I have to say is - always......when you get confused......
2-marrow we pull out for show. My friends have somehow purchased extras for themselves and we are ensuring a grand time. We will be hard jammin all night friday and will be waitin about 8' at the gate. Love ya'll and we will see you there, your friend Charlie. Please help me pull for the JED!!! I need it.
ok. you guys have to be kidding right? i don't know if all these people are convert phish types or what. but the bashing must stop! that is the most un-grateful dead type thing in here! i personally love to see all of my heroes no matter what their particulair groove is. for me a fan of the grateful dead, i would be happy to be at a GRATEFUL DEAD reunion seeing almost all the members of the GRATEFUL DEAD being family and vibe sharers again. for those of you into band wars let me say that one man gathers what another man spills. enjoy the music that appeals to you. if you go to the alpine show remember this. there are some of us who cannot be there. some of us would like to catch the boys when they come around, so DON"T SCREW THIS UP FOR EVERYONE ELSE! for those brothers and sisters going to share the vibe. love for you all
first of all, despite the warning, the other ones fall tour is not contingent upon a "good showing" at alpine. those arenas are booked and couldn't care less about alpine. you think the spectrum and ny and new jersey etc. are worried about some deadheads. those are big arenas. all they care about is green. they've been putting on shows, big shows, even dead shows for years. the old dead members are just using it to try to keep order at alpine. so be it. those fall shows are locked in. you can book em now. count on it. also the dead had to grease the locals and the sheriffs dept. big time, so much money to put on alpine, the weekend will probobly be a financial wash if not a loss so the fall tour is needed to reap the benefits and make some caaash. alpine is what in business is callled a loss leader with the cash cow coming home in the fall. so get out your wallets sheep and help all these ole guys really clean up in the fall and make back everything they may have lost this weekend. this is a gd public service announcement.
ps: local paper reports that local airport in town of alpine will be closed this weekend due to possible terrorist threats. town an has already been in touch with fbi and is afraid someone may drop some harmful liquid on crowd. yeea maybe bear and some windowpayne wash.
get the stank out !
Wow, where to begin?
First, I really wanted to make it to alpine. Like a fool, however, I spent all my money on GDTS tickets for Jones Beach down to Charlotte. Because I was the first born child of restrictive parents, I was trapped in our apartment twenty blocks from MSG during the fall of 1994. A year later, Jerry was gone and I still hadn't seen the dead. I saw Phil for the first time in Charlotte on April 20th...the coincidences that brought me there continued through the first set as I miraculously bumped into who I needed to during a water break. As I closed my eyes and danced to the dark star/blues for allah combo, the real magic began. Somehow, I was taken back in time to a world I had only experienced in my dreams. Amazing to say the least. All of the sudden, I had to go to Red Rocks. I can't even begin to describe the effect that those two nights of music had on my life. When I heard that Phil and Bobby were playing together for NYE, I knew that the Kaiser was THE place to ring in the new year(something my cheese lovin' friends couldn't quite fathom despite hearing the transcendental cryptical combo on the 30th. Their loss indeed. When I saw the second drum kit on the 31st I knew we were in for something special indeed. When midnight came around and three hooded characters approached the stage, the energy in the building created a stairway to heaven. Everyone in that auditorium could feel the positivity, the Unity as Phil would later say. As one, we danced in the New Year. EVERYONE was moving, getting down like tiny electrons in some sort of particle accelerator. When the Other Ones take the stage on Saturday night, when that bubbly anticipation is greeted with the first notes of a familliar tune-that is is when it won't matter to anyone there if its all about the money or whether or not they would sound better with X here or Y there. The sheer ectasy experienced by those at Alpine during those opening moments will supercede all doubts and quiet the naysayers. Yes, like a fool I spent all my money paying to see first Mickey, then Bill, and finally Bill and Bobby get up on stage and do a couple of songs with Phil and his new friends. Never having seen the dead, maybe I'm not qualified to evaluate their collaborations from the East Coast Tour. I can say this, Ratdog IS cheesey(although certainly innovative and surprisingly easy to move to when DJ Logic mixes it up a bit). I think that Phil had done an excellent job assembling his current lineup of friends. Jimmy and Warren do a great job playing with/against each other...although I do prefer Jimmy and think that when you throw Bobby in the sound is incredible(check out all of bonnaroo, especially the other one). Barracco also is an excellent addition, filling the holes perfectly with both his voice and his keys....not to mention his exuberant energy. Speaking of great energy, I think that is something that both Rob and Jimmy possess that makes them similar to Jerry. When you talk with Jimmy, he is such a genuinely nice guy. The first time I saw him in a monorail car at the denver airport last summer, he just radiated kindness. When talking to him later, he displayed a childlike goodness that reminds me of interviews I've seen of Jerry. Just a really sweet guy. When you bring in people like this, you can;t help but expect good things to happen. So wrapping it up, Alpine is going to be wonderful. In Portsmouth, the only thing missing (PLEASE don't get started on anything...happy late b-day Jerry, I do miss you and I know it was you behind that rainbow!) was Mickey's familiar drum beats to help pick up everyone's feet. The only thing that remains to be seen is where they will go with the inevitable dark star. here's to a shakedown opener and a he's gone sunday night encore.
>tiny electrons in some sort of particle accelerator
PERFECT
right on merryprankster!
and to all of you that are too good to see these shows feel free to send your extras this way!
"The Compass always points to Terrapin"!!! I highly recommend everyone who is going to Alpine Valley, listen to the Grateful Deads excellent album "Terrapin Station"!!! I have been lisening to the album over & over again. I guess, I can't stop listen to the CD, because it was released in my favorite Year of the Grateful Dead > 1977!!!
"excellent album Terrapin Sation">>>>>>>>>>dude-what the hell is wrong with you...are you 12????how about you go on out, like any self respectin dead head, and get 5/8/77 Cornell or the Englishtown Dix Pix--if you do have these and still choose to listen to studio Terrapin then you need to get your ass back on tour with Trey.
First time on the board, long time reader...couldn't agree more with those looking forward to Alpine, regardless of who is in and who might have been left out of the lineup. wish i had tix but i'll have to wait for the fall swing to the east coast. recently saw phil on 7/13, great show to say the least, as evident on a stellar second set and specifically dark star. can't wait to hear the broadcast of both nights, hoping for a spacey dark star, love merryprankster's idea of a he's gone encore for sunday. for those who have tix, please don't worry about who's singing, what the motives are for the show or anything else, dance and shake your bones and have a real good time
whats the deal with the webcast
Is there a radio broadcast in the NYC area??? THANKS
Malcolm
does anyone know what's going on with the TOO webcast for tonight?
the site says to check back when it gets closer..... well it's mighty close
anyone know what's happening with that?
Hey, according to the schedule Phil was on at 1:00, mountain time, which I guess means he is still on now -- any reports coming in?
Doin' that Rag>Real Thing>Cumberland>mason's>dark star jam>mason's>Again & Again>Unbroken>strawberry fields>no more do I>Lovelight
Well, now we know tonight's TOO's Dark Star night....
Thanks Rasta! The set looks mighty tasty...
Hey, open up the web feed or I'm flying out there from New York, RIGHT NOW, without a ticket!! Just open up that web feed and I promise to stay home.
I concur with the guy from about half way up that says Phil is rippin' it up an more true to the spirit of the dead. I listened to the first crusader rabbit stuff and was, frankly, bored. What's the deal with bobby and warren? They rarely share the stage. I'm downloading 7/23/02 to see if weir can keep his ego in check long enough to allow for some real jamming instead of his cheezy rhythm BS. You know, you listen to the good old dead and bobby pokes his head out like once every minute. Now he's all over this stuff. Plus, he sings too much!!
Go phil. I'll take the bad singing (phil only, I like WH and RB) and tasty jams over revenue generating nostalgia trips any day.
Ah, I feel better now.
Some of you have decided ahead of time that this show will suck, WHY? Let's listen to the show with an open mind, like we used to have for the Dead!
The show may suck, (doubt it) but it may also be grate! I've heard my best shows when I went with an open mind.
Let us folks who have followed the rest of the band when they were a band, enjoy seeing our heroes. I have many memories of bobby being cheezy and mickey going absolutely apeshit on the drumz with billy. That is just as much a part of the whole grateful dead thing as anything else. I will be happy to take your tickets and parking spots from all of you who only want to see plq and are bored with little ole bobby weir! cannot wait until the fall tour!
what's the deal with all the ripping on bobby?
he's a great singer and he's not going to step on jimmy toes all night....
bobby has said in tons of interviews that when he feels the crowd is ready for them to end a jam and go into something else that's when he ends it and goes into something different.... he's done it all his life you can expect him to now do a 6 hour jam
viva la bobby !
Bobby fans are people too! Whilst at the vibe, I kept on seeing that sticker on the back of a white plymouth or pontiac, made me smile then. The thing I find humorous in this "debate" is that some of the people bashing the boys for doing this are now looking for where the webcast is to be. Wonder if we will get an armchair critique of the jams and songs.
Hey, its only rock and roll but I like it.
Tonight will be serious jamming only, (playing>Dark Star>Other One>Drums>Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Mountains of the Moon>Playin Reprise... Tomorrow should be the big IKO that was missing from the vibes.
My only gripe is that Bruce Hornsby and Steve Kimock are not there. I almost, I said ALMOST think that the first incantation of the other ones were as good or better than the current PLQ at times. Yes even PLQ has bad shows.
Wish we could be there
And to the people saying that this tour is about cash, when was the last time you saw any members of the dead or any other good band for free, (legally of course). Oh yeah, they are also broadcasting on the web live??? So much for the 4 CD boxed set cash coming back to them!!!! This is as close as I will come to catching my favorite band as I have come in almost 7 years. Will I be on the "cash cow" tour, hell yes. I have no problem traveling 8+ hours to catch the closest shows to me (boston) as I did for the other ones in both of their other happenings. The same goes for PLQ and Ratdog and Bob Dylan (except Bob Dylan is way cooler because he is playing in Augusta, St.John and New Brunswick, can you say summer tour???)
If you are worried that PLQ is going to disolve by this, you shouldn't be. PLQ will only dissolve if Phil wishes it to, he seems to be having way to much fun playing with PLQ to let it go.
Hey, I know it's only rock and roll but I like it, like it, yes I do!
RUMOR:
bruce is flying up after his Atlanta performance tonight and will play tomorrow...
am i not supposed to see a picture there on terrapin? is it 7:30pm Central yet?
I really don't know where some of you are coming from, bad-mouthing bobby's music. You might like P&F better, but wouldn't you rather see Ratdog than 95% of the other bands out there? The gutter-sniping is beneath us. Let's enjoy the fact that there is good music being given to us. Remember, not only is it good music, but the bands are allowing us to share it!
Is anyone getting anything over the webcast yet?

Ladies and gents, with the 70's and early-mid 80's long gone, think back to the last summer Dead tour in '95. I did a few shows, and I must admit that Jerry, rest his soul, was slowing down a bit. What I've already heard tonight is, at the very least, on par with that tour musically. Combine that to the setlist we've already seen tonight....we've got a pretty nice fall tour to look forward to.........you can sense the togetherness, at least I can.

...we'll be back in just a little bit...
WOW, that really sounded great, everyone was really enjoying it, musicians and crowd
Yeah I'll be at both Philly shows
Anything coming out of the Webcast? Heard the first set and now I have a whole lot of nothing...
If you're a chump w/56K, like me, & experience quality problems (rebuffering, etc.), try exiting and logging back in. That cured it.
I hear a little Philler...
Phil & Friends 0n now
i think that the practice really payed off, compared to the crusader rabbit sets, they sounded tight yet totally able to just be there in the moment, can't wait for the second set, and tommarow's show, and fall tour, and next tour after that, and... and
Little bits of Eleanor Rigby going by. What is this???
first set symbolism with an opening instrumental he's gone followed by a lyrical he had to die followed by an introduction announcing the band the other one. no surprise weir then tells us he feels like a stranger and phil invokes the great one again in bird. no super long jams but all in all nicely played.
doin that rag, is this today???
man they closed with doin that rag last tuesday night here in Austin, Chills through the whole crowd
they will jam 2nd set just getting warmed up
Ahhhhhh, back on. Sweet Doin that Rag! Today?Lookin forward to Fall shows at MSG, NJ & Boston!
I can't believe I am going to miss this tour. My wife is due in December and there is no way I can head off to the east coast
no just a little philler
good insight stankmonkey, right on. is any one else down w/ me starting another thread for the second set, 'cause with my dial up connection i feel refreshing is hurting my connection speed with the webcast (for me it kept going from 11k to 21k, i'ld like to try to keep it at atleast 21 k)
Good Morning!!! Must be today, why did they cut it off???
Encore: Black Muddy River!?

Jams in Baba were nice. Almost makes it tollerable. Way better than 2000. China sounding nice.
china cat sounds GOOOOD. must say that w/o warren, you can really hear the other instruments.

hey jeremy, nothing wrong with taking five years to get through high school. tour tour tour!

Singing the headlight verse together, a la PLQ. No one will ever be able to (or want to) belt it out like Jerry.

Somthing new and man that was fun.
anyone have any ideas for me for tomorrow?
all night long i kept going to dead.net then to the webcast site to try to login
( from 7:30 til like 9 )and all i was seeing was a 2inch by 2inch outline of a box and nothing else and an X in the corner
what's with that?
any help i NEED to hear it tomorrow
thanks
A good show, but as Greg the shill MC closed with "The Magic is back", now, there's more magic in a P&F show.
If you're on a Grateful Dead nostalgia trip, you got it....
They certainly DID sound alot more like the Dead than P&F......
I got in during the jam into TOO.
My impression of the first set was good playing, not great & hardly awesome.
Anyone who thinks it was the greatest needs to throw on some P&F.....
Still, good song selection & well played. But, I felt there was more that could've been gotten out of each song.
2nd set, MNS was slower than slow & had no build up at the end; dissappointing....
The dreaded Baba Jingo was actually good, although I guess I can understand why there were people complaining in the chatroom. With 30 years of music, they're playing Baba Jingo?
Lots of people were complaining about China >Rider, but I thought is was solid, even with Bob jumping in to start singing Rider too soon & then backing off.
Morning Dew was totally lame. To me, that means the instrumental at the end.....
Dark Star took a little while, but finally got there, then an 11 tease, & the big breakout! Big deal.....
Sorry, you know me; I'd rather have an Other One or 11 than a 4 minute Born Cross Eyed. But, it was a powerful song, not a slow one & sure beat Again &
Again in the middle of Dark Star, which they returned to. So, in the context of the middle of Dark Star, it was a good sandwich Actually, I think the 11 tease was here, not before. Then verse 2 of Dark Star, some very cheesey vocalizing at the end of Dark Star which reminded me of the end of Shakedown.
They picked it right up into an 11-ish jam, TOO again, then a touch of Dark Star & back into Cryptical & quickly to Sat Night, where my hookup crashed....
I got back on after Mrs B's (probably) drunk friend called from Fla at 12:30, nice when I have an autistic kid trying to go to sleep......
So, I get back on in Slipknot, very nice I thought, then Franklin's.
Lots of fun listening & in the chatroom too, although the people who think everything the GD ever did was awesome were kinda getting pissed at the 'negativity' of those of us who were joking and/or complaining.......
To me, it was a solid show. No drums was great quite frankly. Tomorrow, I bet they do them.
The only time I thought they were really 'THERE'' was the 27 minutes between Dark Star & Sat Night.
Anyone who thinks this was a match or better than P&F needs a check up from the neck up IMHO...
(why must I bait you guys?)
My opinion is that I'd much rather see P&F go 'out there' for 3 hours than see the former members try to recreate something that died 7 years ago. I'll go to one show, MSG, in the Fall, whereas I just saw 4 P&F shows. Heck, I'm even going to skip my home show in
hartford.....
what about the webcast
Hey Ryan, didn't you used to play for the Mets?
It was tough to get into the webcast, P&F for philler between sets sounded much better QTY.
It was good once you got in, & fun to see (or actually hear) the music as it happened.
The chatroom, we're used to 5-15 people in their waiting foir a list. Listening to it tonight, & then commenting as it happened, the messages were flying so fast, we couldn't even read many of them until it settled down, but even then, it was tough.
Tomorrow should be fun.....
Holy Shit !!!!!!!!!!!THANK YOU PHILZONE for bringing us the magic!!!! The vibe has never left!!!!!!!! FALL TOUR>>>>> HELL FUCKIN YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...were there any people dancing and having fun in the aisles?
Enjoyed it, have to admit. Some solid moments. Anyone hear Phil doing a few UJB riffs on the bass before the last verse of Dark Star?
Baba Jingo went off so well, can see a possible fall sandwich: Baba Jingo>Corinna>Baba Jingo.
Yeah, back into Baba Jingo...
Lots of long breaks between songs. Understandable for 1st show. I'd like to see them eventually play a 2nd set non-stop, like P&F.
Still, while some sloppiness needs to be cleaned up, overall very POSITIVE.
But what's up with the DNC folks and Warren? First the MC cuts off the Real Thing, rather blatently, during the intermission for more commentary and crowd noise. And on the "Official Terrapin Site," it just says "Warren Haynes" in black, with no link, like everyone else.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
This was amazing cause it has brought back something thats been gone for quite some time.
Yes I too love phil but who cares about all this ohh Phil and friends is bettter!
Just sit back and enjoy the tunes!!!
Cause its all about the music
I wont judge TOO untill I see em live.
my connection came through during Stranger..its hard for me to measure this music since the sound range was so limited on my computer but i'd say they were a bit tentative and kept most jams short and to the point though some of that that could be due to jimmys laid back playing and the group trying to feel each other out musically and find its wings..
..some people have voiced complaints that jimmy plays too many notes and last nite it seemed he showed alot of restraint which was great, lots of space between his notes and phrases so you could hear the band as a whole..to my ears it finally really took off during HSF, so they should be all warmed up for tonite..
buckys right, more like a dead show, many stops and starts and phil didn't lead the band into any grooves like in PLQ, instead going for the dead formula of group improv...here's an article from a local paper...good news for the fall tour..looks like a winner!
http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/aug02/63961.asp
thanks for sharin' the love with the article, sjf . . . good news good news GOOD NEWS !!! Hopefully, today is even mellower than Saturday . .
I'm so glad the masses heeded all the advice and warnings that were sent out, bodes well for the future of Other Ones shows . . . See ya in Albany!
Mrmegabuzz, how could one possibly have fun and dance in the aisles when there is so much analytical work to be done???
overall impression, not bad, nothing special though. but it was a first night. hottest number/best jam: Help on the Way. nice webcast. fun to listen too. main surprise, the keyboards were really fine and may have even outshone the guitars.
It deffinatly was not a PLQ, but it wasn't billed as such.
~~~It was great in the "Dead" style that they played.
Yes it needs some polishing and it would be great to let Warren sing. (in no way complaining)
I got the whole broadcast{no picture}up till Saturday night, and didn't know they played it till I read the post. Thanks to the long break got right back in for Help. Thought is was a great encore to set us up for tonight.
Yes I danced up a storm~~~In my livingroom which had its own advantages like, cold beer, cold water, candels, kids, bathroom ect. all at my fingertips. Hehe
But I'm sure nothing like dancing with the kids on the lawn.
Just sit back, (or dance) and take it as we can get it**** beacause "Life" isn't always as sweet as this.
Be there again tonight~~~**Enjoy**~~~
was there supposed to be visuals with the webcast? Someone mentioned that earlier.
>phil didn't lead the band into any grooves like in PLQ,
I guess you didn't catch DarkStar. Phil was leading the whole band on this one with obvious rhtymic and "groove" changes.
Does sound more deadlike, but not in a nostalgic sort of way. Just in a way that makes it harder to pigeon hole the sound. (Unlike P&F which is obviously dominated by a southern rock sound.)
Sorry Bucky, you're wrong about P&F. I'd like to hear anything by P&F that compared with last nights DarkStar (when the band really got going in my opionion due to Phil calling the shots.) I haven't yet heard anything P&F has done that compared with the sound they got going during last nights show from Dark Star on . . . . (Including Red Rocks 7/7/01).
Can't wait for tonight!
I thought the Other Ones played better than I expected them to. Anyone expecting them to be really tight was expecting too much from a band that's never played a show together. There were some good moments and there was some confusion. Some nice "bust-outs" and I really enjoyed Jimmy!
Baba Jingo doesn't belong even though Jimmy ripped it up. I guess we got Baba insted of 'drums.'
Going to miss tonight's broadcast because of another concert, and I'll miss Gary's commentary between sets and after the show. We don't need Gary to tell us what we had just heard. Bucky's right...what a shill.
I really enjoyed the chat last night even though it was very crowded. The joking around made my night.
I thought they sounded a lot like the Other Ones
well I guess I'll throw my 2 cents in on lasts nites gig in cheeseland. First off I'll just say I logged on at 6:58 mtn time and had an almost instant and very nice,clean connection to the music. I never lost it and it stayed solid all nite. I wish I could say the same for the music I heard streaming into my home here in beautiful Whitefish, Montana. I didn't really expect anything special from a band playing thier first live gig together and from that sense I felt they were quite succesful. They seemed solid musically all night long, no major screwups that I picked up on. I was very impressed with the playing of Mr. Herring. He fills Jerry's shoes quite nicely. Its a shame he doesn't sing, because thats where this band gets into trouble. My wife (100 dead shows, 82-91) and myself (200 plus, 79-95) are sitting on the couch listening to Phil attempt to sing Morning Dew (among others) and we both looked at each other and said " oh my god" ! I guess the best way to describe Phil singing is he sounds like a sick dog. It was just plain awful. Now I know why Phil didn't even have a mic in front of him for many years with the Dead. Hearing him sing an occasional tune in the Dead was tolerable, usually he was joined by Brent (gimme some, keep on growin) or by the others like on Box of rain. As a lead vocalist, Its just sad he has to be put into that position. Although I haven't seen a single Dead related gig since Garcia checked out, It sounds as if R. Barraco could sing Garcia's leads and do a competent job at it. Am I the only one who feels this way? Take the "rider" vocal last nite, Weir pulls off his side and then the big "headlight" verse is just totally flat, very uninspired to say the least. I will say I did enjoy the Help/slip/franklins encore, easily the highlite of the evening for me. The slip jam was far better than anything I remember Garcia doing in the last 8 years of his time with us. Was phil singing Franlins? He did an admiral job with that. Ok, I've ragged on Phil's singing enough, the guy is still the "man" on bass, and at sixty-two with a spare liver, he's still out there rockin away, Go Phil! As I said before I haven't seen any shows since my last Dead gig in Albany, NY in '95 (man was that show painful) I didn't hear anything last nite that would bring me outta retirement. I also understand that tix are approaching $50.00 a pop these days (or more), easy to say nada. For all those who love what Phil is doing and can't wait to see the boys hit the east coast hockey barns in the fall, I say go for it. In todays crazy fucked world, a nite of live music that makes you feel better is probably a bagain for 50 bucks. And yeah, I'll probably tune in tonite to see what they can pull off. I will say I miss Alpine Valley, easily one of the top five venues from back in the day along with #1 red rocks, #2 greek theatre, #3 frost amp and #4 Oak aud/kaiser. Just my favs, what are yours? Peace be with you.
>it would be great to let Warren sing
Huh?
I know Warren wasn't there but I think if he sang Dew it would have been more enjoyable.
Yeah Warren or maybe a thousand other more gifted vocalists. But neither they nor Warren is in TOO, so what's the point?
Mtnjammer- I'm with you as far as shows go(200 plus, 79-95) Had many great moments and great venues #1 Red Rocks- outside
#2 Greek- outside
#1 Fox Atlanta- inside
#2 Nassau - beacuse, from there and saw killer shows!
If you haven't seen Pill and friends I would say, There a Great Jam band worth the 50 or whatever. You might want to pick up some discs you'll enjoy the tunes.
1. Warren doesn't sing the Dew in P&F either. Phil does.
2. Phil's singing grows on you.
Chris
Okay so maybe more Rob, got the point.
Phil's singing does grow on you and I've heard him sing a nice Unbroken...
Though I did wince at the dew...
hampton coliseum (or as a friend said after the warlocks show, i don't think we're in kansas anymore toto.)
Yes, Hampton was a great spot for the boys, saw several shows there in early eighties. Annie, I know how folks are partial to home town shows, but I watched far to many heads get taken off to the Nassau County Jail. In fact, some (many) are probably still there at this point. I saw only a couple of nights there 82,83?, solid shows if memory serves me. I guess other east venues I enjoyed would include all the upstate NY barns. Barton hall @ Cornell, Binghamton, Utica and Rochester war memorials.....who could forget Lake Placid....Portland, Me was always a fun visit.
I'll second Hampton.
>I thought they sounded a lot like the Other Ones
Leave it JHT to nail it. Right On!!!
My two cents, most of the above not contributed by anyone there. It was magical, everyone had a great time, and that is all that was promised.
As for the bitching in the chat...it is downright rude. This is virtually a one time thing...so many had their head up their a.....s complaining that I doubt seriously they ever listened.
It was all good, and the H-S-F was surprisingly great given the plethora of P&F excellent versions we have all heard.....
>It was all good, and the H-S-F was surprisingly great given the plethora of P&F excellent versions we have all heard.....
well, Dewit, there you go, comparing HSF to P&F. WHY!?!?!?!?
Portland + Agusta was great and stommping and Palladium beautiful...again just to name a few.
I was just to busy dancing by myself or with the kids last night to chat.
Your right Dewit how you can listen and chat at the same time....never worked for me.
Still looking forward to tonight!!!!!!!!!
And no I'm not down on thoes that chat...unless your standing next to me at a show.
HEY TODD..
i have a strong feeling that you haven't seen a PLQ show yet. Phil's voice has gotten so much stronger throughout the past couple of years. You listened expecting to hear the GD and you shouldn't. that's what some people do with PLQ and it doesn't work for them either until they think of it as a different band. if you have seen 200+ gd shows, you should give PLQ a chance.
H-S-F was hot and a nice way to end the show. -> between china/rider was a little short, but that can be worked out. for a first time gig, it rang nicely. like the "break-outs"...
webcast was fine for me, only a couple of drop offs..
Jimmy played nice and so did the keys. i like the fact that bobby is a player in this band and not the leader. that is his best role...
Phil was dropping numerous bombs last night and that made me dance in my kitchen.
I heard that the lines were VERY VERY VERY LONG. 2 hours to get food and hour for beer...shortest line was for funnel cake..bathrooms weren't that bad. the traffic getting in was fine, but getting out took 2 hours!!!
first of all i just want to thank the folks who posted updates here, i am not lucky(or rich) enough to be in wisconsin this weekend so i appreciate what i can get. last night i was out delivering pizzas while alot of you were listening to the webcast and when i came home to check out the postings here i found a bunch of relatives sleeping in the computer room! so i had to wait until today to even find out what they played. from what everyone was saying it seems like it would have been a hell of a time at alpine valley, and even a pretty good time in your living room in front of your computer. tonight i'm going to try to get the webcast, though i'm not sure that my computer illiterate mind will be able to get it working.
maybe tonight will bring the lyrical completion of the opening jam on saturday?
i can't wait for fall tour!!! naysayers be damned
Eric..
all you have to do is subscribe to RealPlayer...
it is real simple
Todd,
I guess I just don't get the logic. Having been to hundreds of shows, you obviously appreciate what "live" music can do for the soul, especially for those of us that "get it." Not going to a dead-related show in 7 years, and saying 50 bucks is too much for a night out to see this band is hard for me to follow, but to each his own, I guess.
I can't remember the prices when I first saw the Dead (in '74) or when I last saw them (in '95), but I find that the value P&F give today to be much greater than what the Dead were giving at the end. And if we can count on high quality, jammed out,2 1/2 -- 3 hour TOO shows this Fall, I'm gonna get as much as I can.
>And if we can count on high quality, jammed out,2 1/2 -- 3 hour TOO shows this Fall, I'm gonna get as much as I can.
my expectations are even a bit lower. good quality and good friends and it's a winner for me. If it turns out to be high quality, so much the better. The only possible negative for me would be some kind of bad security and/or cop scene, but I'm pretty skilled at avoiding that bullshit.
I'm thinking at least 4 fall shows: Albany, Philly (Sat.), MSG and Meadowlands.
See you there!
>I guess you didn't catch DarkStar. Phil was leading the whole band on this one with obvious
rhtymic and "groove" changes. <
djangoman, i did catch that dark star...i was referring to the grooves phil creates out of a jam as it dissolves...
In PLQ, Phil is able to find new ideas as a jam winds down and is able to weave these floating notes into a new jam pattern-style..then another..then another...he often creates 5-7 in a row, one leading to the other, sometimes moving gracefully from a faster funk feel to bluegrass or sometimes variations on the other one or dark star played at unusual tempos..
i was curious to see if with TOO Phil would initiate any of these grooves he creates between songs (or in the middle of a song sometimes, like in PLQ's china cat or NFA jams that go way out there, beyond the body of the song, departing into different tempos, styles then back) as is often done in the PLQ format but i didn't hear any of that last nite...not a complaint just an observation..
dark star seemed to stay in the dark star theme though it stretched way out...but it didn't go into a whole different tempo or feel like in GOTV where it broke into a Dancin' in the Streets type jam, then into several completely different themes before returning to the dark star theme..
about the live chat: my wife was constantly hit on by bozos messaging her all nite, one even offering cybersex right off the bat (these guys all had grateful dead type names, too).. very uncool.. otherwise its was a very cool thing, being able to share thoughts with her as this music unfolded..i guess ladies in cyberspace prolly need to use a manly name just to fool the fools.
Dewit,
You are right on the JHT comment.
As for the chatroon 'bitching', how did YOU keep up with it if YOU were listening?
Are we all supposed to bow down and worship while they play Supplication for ONE minute, sans the ending jam (throw on 3-10-81, everyone's got that, if you don't know what I mean)?
People were simply expressing their opinions, and it was alot of fun. Like when Bob messed up IKYR.
Personally, as I said, I felt that the instrumentals often were not taken 'over the top' from good/very good to greatness.....
So, to me, constantly seeing AWESOME! printed on the screen to playing that was not awesome was getting ridiculous......
Simply the same type of mentality that allowed the Dead to sleepwalk through so many shows in their last 10 years & have people go nuts.
Call a spade a spade.
Of course, it sorta was their first show. Understand however, Jimmy & Rob sat in for Aiko with Mickey in JB, Bob's been at lots of P&F shows, both Mickey & Bill sat in with P&F this summer, plus NYE, & Bonaroo was the same band as last night minus the drummers, so they've played together quite a bit.
As far as comparing P&F to last night:
1. This is the PHILZONE.
2. If we get TOO's, it is expressly at the expense of P&F playing, so in that light, comparison is quite fair.
>>>>Yes I danced up a storm~~~In my livingroom which had its own advantages like,
Not having to tell the drunk next to you to shut up.
I hope......
>Simply the same type of mentality that allowed the Dead to sleepwalk through so many shows in their last 10 years & have people go nuts.
Fair enough, although during that period there were still enough musical moments to keep me interested. let's see if TOO progresses a bit during the Fall tour...
THANKS BUCKY...
i guess that was directed towards my friends..
i thought that we kissed and made up?
are we going to go through this again???
just joking...
just enjoy the music, cause it won't go on forever..don't worry about the short supplication or bobby cutting in..he always messes up at least once a show. it wouldn't be a GD type show without it..
just be psyched that this is happening. i thought that it was awesome to get the show in real time on my computer...that is a nice feeling...
GOD BLESS THE GD
sounds like a killer setlist, can't wait for the fall swing...looking forward to an excellent scarlet/fire tonight (i hope) and perhaps an encore in which they complete the he's gone they already started...as far as TOO vs. PLQ, just saw PLQ and they were mindblowing, but granted when they were first coming together they were nowhere near the band they have become today...give TOO some time folks, enjoy tonight's music all
I get the sense that none of them will ever sing He's Gone Again.
They would've done it already if they were going to I think.
Touch of Grey too.....
Scarlet > Fire's a lock. I forgot to mention Rob & Jimmy also sat in for Fire at JB 7-14.....
Rasta, what? Did I miss something?
I like everyone here, I'm not mad at anyone....
We may disagree, but getting upset over this stuff is absurd in the light of the world we live in.
Peace........
>>>>Yes I danced up a storm~~~In my livingroom which had its own advantages like,
Not having to tell the drunk next to you to shut up.
I hope......
Hehe no but did have to tell the kids to go to bed when they started to ask me to do this, that and the other thing.
They know the rule..."No chating while dancing."
(And now past your bed time).
You are absolutely right - this is the Philzone. Comparisons are always fair. Back in the day you had the Phil zone folks and the Jerry side people, the Bob fans, the "everything is so grooooovy" heads, etc., etc. ,etc. - its what made and still makes the scene. There isn't another band out there, or group of related bands, that have a fan base so intimately familiar with their work. No other group of bands could even hope to get this much real attention - all the way from the "awesome" crowd to the "haven't played a good show since 77" crowd. Most bands only get the "yea man I was there - where were you" cool dudes.
I'm very glad that PLQ is in place, that the boys can still get together and do a righteous TOO run, and that there are still people who love the music enough to review it, argue about it, and ultimately love it - if we ALL didn't like the bands this much, the interest and the chats wouldn't be here at all - and that would be the final nail in a coffin I'm glad has never been built.
Keep on dancin' - at Alpine or in your living room, in the aisles or in your hallway, on your seat or on your couch - just remember, when you find yourself analyzing the f out of the band, the crowd, some chat room comment, ... close your eyes and listen to the music play - its all good stuff. (and besides, would you rather here Phil struggle through a dew, or listen to say Hootie and the blowjobs) p.s. best comment of the night last night "Baba Jingo? Good Lord."
bucky...
Bobby does "he's gone" with ratdog
>when they were first coming together they were nowhere near the band they have become today
I hear that...
>did have to tell the kids to go to bed when they started to ask me to do this, that and the other thing.
...and that too!
Your right Zen sit back and enjoy.
We all know nothing lasts forever....
Amen to sittin back and enjoying it cause I know when I am older like in my 30s a good chance this might be not be here....... (I am 17 now) So I am going to enjoy every minute of this whoever is playing....
Cause we can all agree this aint phish!
Rasta:
Oh, my bad.
Show's you how much I know about Ratdog....
So, then I guess they might do it, although TOO's already had 2 shots, '98 & 2000, plus last night.
>>>>Sorry Bucky, you're wrong about P&F. I'd like to hear anything by P&F that compared with last nights DarkStar (when the band really got going in my opionion due to Phil calling the shots.) I haven't yet heard anything P&F has done that compared with the sound they got going during last nights show from Dark Star on . . . . (Including Red Rocks 7/7/01).
Have you heard:
5-27-00
4-20-01
7-5-02
The GOTV's Dark Star was better IMHO, more different places, spaces & tempos.....
Not that I thought last night's was bad, as I said, the highlight of the show & the first time they seemed to really 'nail it' at peak performance....
ratdog does touch of grey, too...
...did anyone notice that last night they played the intro melody of Dark Star (really strong, btw, as a group, not just Phil's bassline intro), then played as an instrumental the 1st part that is usually sung and THEN Phil sang the 1st verse?..seemed to be a subtle slight nod to Jerry perhaps...
I am a guy who is older and in his 30s. Its fantastic that there is still top shelf music coming from these guys in all of their incarnations. I'm right there with the comments earlier about putting the kids to bed during the show - my kids got to stay up a bit late - they had to wait for set break to go to bed. No damn way I'm missing the Casey Jones so I can sing twinkle little star 5 times! I don't ge to hit the road like I used to - I can tell you I used to wonder how damn lucky the folks were who lived near a radio station that aired a live GD show - now we have Webcasting! giddy up! If I sound like I'm geezing a little bit, so be it - last night was a great time and I had a blast watching the back and forth on the chat room. the best part about the chat room was I didn't have to tell the drunk next to me to shutup, I only listened to the chatting during the music when I fealt like it - any way we can get that feature on the talkative folks at the shows? Its a long overdue technological advancement we need!
Hubbys home tonight. He was unable to be there for last nights event. So I can say this...
"All kids go to bed early"!!!!!!
Another reason for not chating...can't type while head is spinning and hands are tapping ...to many keys to focus on...hehe
Thats just me.
Now just to get dinner done!
...any predictions on tonight's setlist?
dinner's done and the kids are on their way to reading time and then closed door time! and still I'll have an hour to chill before the show starts...
>Touch of Grey too.....
Ratdog also does Touch. Saw em do it NYE in Oakland.
Good for you Paul, The 9 and 10 year old are already starting to argue, but it's summer, blaa blaa blaa. I'll give them a few, then tag I win.
Anyway everyone,
ENJOY lets have some FUN!!!!!!!!!!
Zenjeffrey, you have hit the nail dead on the head, brother; well put !!!
>>>Phil's singing grows on you.
Chris, I totally agree, and feel the need to add to what you have said here: To me, it's not so much the quality, but rather the sincerity (meaningfulness) and credibility (Phil as a driving and creative force from the GD's inception, having lived and weathered the many, many miles and years with the band/family) of the singer that truly gives the music its mood/feeling/meaning . . . just as he plays, he does lay it down vocally, too. Maybe a bit rough at times, but always rock solid.
As for a favorite venue: As a relative latecomer -the stadium era (first show 7.4.89) - My vote is for RFK Stadium, D.C. Although probably not most peoples' ideal venue in terms of intimacy, I always felt that the boys ripped it up in the midst of the summertime in the nations capital . . just my .02 . . .
Missed it last night, but I'm hooked up to the webcast tonight, magic's in the air . . the stage has been set (from last night's encore) should be a very memorable and legendary evening tonight . . Annie and Paul, I'm with you guys; I'm gonna go grab a beer from my fridge (warming up with Mickey & Co right now) . . . Cheers, all ! ! ! ! !
Magic's in the air!!!!!!
Right on~******~~***
Good night
Phil!!! I did enjoy your singing last night much better. Definitly went together with the groove of the tunes->Eyes, Mountain, Terrapin, Box. ect
Loved the show Danced, though found myself alot more relaxed with feet up.
Always love a Suger Mag ...Heads all empty, ahhh.
Called Alpine for Brown eyed in honor of a friend.
Got a call back for Fire...Great change of words..like to do that myself sometimes.
Can't wait for them to be in the area.
Heard on the local news this morning, shows are comfirmed. (Or now they said tentative)
Paul thanks for having the right point about the singing...It could not be any other~*
Hope all had a great time, and all make it home safetly
Right on, Annie. I listened to the whole thing with my dog (and the first set w/my wife) and enjoyed it thoroughly. Fall tour, here I come!
next best thing to a Phil show
Friday and saterday sounded way better than
GD post 91.
What more can you ask for?
Well me probably being the 1st to be back to report some kind of review, which will be very difficult to sum up for the whole day…. Here goes.
The scene was awesome. I never had seen the Dead B/4 so as I entered I got a great feeling of satisfaction from the get go. And as I was told from most Zoners there this event was the closest anyone can come w/ out ever seeing them. The place was PACKED! It was hippie to hippie everywhere. Even the very back top of the lawn was very tight and you could see on the horizon lots of peoples and lots more behind them fading over the hill.
All the precautions the police said they would take where either not taken or called off early. I believe nothing more then scare tactics, which seemed to work. Very easy getting in and no hassles what so every anywhere.
I was late for Phil due to other circumstances, and missed about the 1st half hour. From what I did hear of Phil (lots of getting organized for me) it sounded great! I’d have to admit I was not able to pay close of attention as I intended. Lots of people trying to find a spot for the day… walking around, beer, relaxing and so on. I did catch Again and Again on up. Strawberry Fields was fun as always. I could do w/ out the song in concert myself. Unbroken was as good as always, and the Love Light got every one up on there feet and movin’. I was a little disappointed that I could not have seen the whole set.
I really did not get a chance to see much of the side stage at all. It was located way in the back near the village (about a 5 tent block squared village of tents selling goods.. which was cool) and that area in particular was very crowded because of the masses going to shop or see the side show. It was too crowded and chaotic of me. Shoulder to shoulder, everyone walking in every direction. I did catch a little of Donna and the Buffalo which sounded great, but left quickly.
Mickey’s band was a lot of fun. Good Caribbean, Samba style to it. I had never heard them B/4 except a “Fire on the Mountain Rap” once. They where a bit drawn out and cheesy during some songs, but good fun. I’d go see’em if it was convenient and cheap.
Robert Hunter was fantastic… the missing link. I love his solo stuff, but this set was impossible to enjoy because of the constant sound troubles. Constant hiss, static, and at many points complete sound failure. This happened at least every 30 seconds to a minute and had the crowd booing after a bit. It was very disappointing, and I know it would have been fantastic if we where able to hear it though.
The Sun was very very hot and left us all frying there w/ no where to go, so by this time I and most people did not go to the side stages to see anyone. The only way was to relax and cover your face! People in my group seemed to be reaching deliriousness at this time. You’ll understand if you see your friends face when they get back. Unfortunately I missed the Disco Biscuits and Warren’s solo and interviews.
I wont attempt to pick apart of every song to describe it’s highs and lows. Much of that to me creates different highs / feelings, which describing on paper would do no justice. I'll leave that to the bootlegs and for you to hear for yourself.
The Other Ones where unbelievable. They ragged hard the entire time and had everyone up on their feet for most both sets. The set list speaks for itself and many heard this one the webcast or XRT 93.1. I believe you really had to be there to judge, and judging seems a bit silly from my point of view. It’s a miracle to me this is all happening and would just be flat out pooper pessimist style to judge it and not enjoy what you’ve got left or in front of you. Many high points during the sets that left the crowd jumping and roaring like thunder. Very high energy set. It was impossible not to enjoy Jimmy’s guitar. He sank right in w/ the band and became apart of the music. Highlights fro me where the entire 1st set.. Cryp-> Other One, Lazy Lightening (the one I was waiting for), Casey Jones was one of the better I’d heard, w/ an extremely fast up beat high energy ending that left the crowd screaming.
2nd set was just as fantastic as the 1st only much longer! The set list again speaks for itself. It all started to really come together for me here and I’d knew I’ll be back for more in the next few months. Very exciting. They slowed it down and played a few slower songs. Had a few surprises in there, one being Born Crossed Eyed and another I did not recognize? All and all the 2nd set was fantastic and kept everyone on edge and including the band members! I know because at this point everyone had been there for well over 12 hours and the people still raging and the band still playin like pro’s. One More Saturday Night was a perfect way to end the almost 100min set. The encore was too much!!!!!!!! I know everyone slept good that night and I wondered how’d they do it all again tomorrow?
Much respect for all of the boys!!!
See ya all this fall! They’re not to be missed!
Chris
Brought camera, but batteries ran out! Would have been nice to catch all the Zoners w/.
DOOH!
Just gack to DC from the valley . . . haven't felt that vibe since at least '95. Yesssssssssssss, it was sweet. As far as the music, hate to say it here, but my entertainment $ would have to go to TOO over the current PLQ. . . . I know, to each his own, but get the tapes. There was some serious boogie-ing going on. New sound altogether at some points. The whole He's Gone jam->Cryptical->Other Ones->Stranger was . . . .. ?^%%###& For the Phil heads here, the "You know he had die . . . " line had all 40,000 of us somewhere else. Serious homage being paid at the beginning there.
Also, there was a new star born on this night. Jimmy Herring stepped up to the plate in a MAJOR way. These shows sealed the conclusion for me: Jimmy and Warren are each too good to be limited by the other. Obviously, times, they are a changin. . . .
Congrats to all who attended (and who did not) and to the local authorities. After that scene, there's no way anyone could complain.
There were at least 75 mic stands taping the Other Ones, so aud. tapes should be out soon.
See you in yhr fall.
Bucky:
You'll go to one show in November. . . . then you'll be at more. Sorry, you've posted tons on here, and I've agreed with almost all of your posts, but I think you should hold you breath on this one until you actually attend a show. Later.
2nd that. Wait to see at least one show.
Peace~>
Bassgreat--very good point about Phils singing"mood/feeling/meaning" Some of these people don't seem to get it. I agree about RFK being the best venue. I am a little partial given the fact that it is in my home town- one of the many cool things about the place was the fact that the bleachers to the left of the stage used to bounce. When things where really hoppin you almost felt as if you where surfing
Allrighty folks, I just got back to DC myself and wanted to give you my thoughts.
I am of the arean era having seen around 60 shows over between 89-95. My friends and I had thousands of hours on tape, so I feel I am pretty qualified to give a fair assesment of the boys.
I felt that the shows were decent musically...but what made it great was seeing the joy that they were having (when the second show ended, they all huddled and jumped around like a football squad), it put a smile on my face, clearly they were having fun (which didn't always seem to be the case with the Dead of the 90's)
I thought the the He's gone jam into cryptical ("you know he had to die") was well planned, yet sounded very loose and jammy. All in all both shows were good, the scene was much mellower than I thought it would be, and the venue is a pretty place to see any band. Just as a side note (don't think I am playin the violin to ya...casue I know many of you were unable to attend...), but Alpine Valley did some pretty poor planning as far as concessions went. The concert was an all day event in 90+ degree weather yet food and water lines were an hour plus long...many people were seeking water like nomads in the desert, myself included (surprisingly the beer and bathrooms were easy in easy out, so once I hydrated, it was Miller time again).
Now to my bold statement that I hope you folks respect...I think the other one's need to stick Jimmy Herring in a booth for a month and make him listen to bootlegs non stop...There is no question that he is talented enough to sound great in his spot, but he was flat out lost during many jams (let it grow, terrapin, and Dew to name a few...he plays with Phil, so the "first time" excuse just doesn't work)...With the old GD, Bobby use to cut things off or make mistakes, this time it seemed as though Bobby (and the band) wanted to tear loose but JH just didnt know where to go, so they would just fall apart. Frankly, I think if the boys grabbed the best damn GD cover bands guitarist they would have ripped things up much more...cause at least he would know where to take the Dew, or how to back out of Let it Grow...I truely belive this, and I am not an armchair critic...just a realist in a post Jerry era.
Allright, enough already. The shows were a lot of fun...it was a great excuse to go to a great facility, chill out, and listen to good music with good friends.
My only hope is that they continue with the nifty setlists, and imporve their direction for the fall tour...bottom line is I fuckin love the Dead, but I refuse to live on fumes...the music has to be able to climax (and in small pockets it did this weekend). They are going to need to turn it up a little this fall, otherwise they will merely become guys who sell out large arenas because kids who never saw them feel the need to go, and others live on nostalgia...Bottom line is, its about the music, and no matter how cool it is to see them together, the music needs to crescendo and go over the edge for me to enjoy it...I have faith that they will pull it all together this fall.
Hey folks I'm back! Wow, this is going to be a rant - hang in there! As many of you know, I am one of the most cynical bastards out there, see my post early in this subject where I insinuated that people should act bad to discourage an OI tour. Well, as a 300+ show veteran, who experienced mid-'70's magic, 1978 boredom, the passing of K&D, arrival of Brent, Radio City, early '80's touring, the Warlocks shows, Hornsby, all the '90's MSG shows, New Year's, etc. (and I am not trying to brag here, I am getting to a point eventually) . . . I went to this extended weekend jaunt mostly for PLQ @ the Fox and got what I craved - great show in awesome venue - so the Alpine thang was just icing, so I had absolutely zero expectations, again refer to my joke post above to sense my attitude going in - Fall Other Ones tour? Time to re-stoke vacation time for next year's Phil tour, my 'tude! Anyway, experienced 1st day of Alpine - fun time, great people, no thought whatsoever to the headliner - Ok, get seated, 8 pm, 1st notes - Jimmy is F-ing GOD! 5' in - figuring out how I can do the WHOLE TOUR and NEW YEAR'S - work, what's that? The drummers have revamped everything - (and I saw that 2000 lineup - snooore!) - Mickey is percussionist, moves around, stands up, different dynamic than the GD ever had - Jimmy is absolutely perfect - Bobby has equipment problems (the more things change, the more they stay the same!), but minimal rock star strutting - but this is to me absolute magic - I just can't believe how much I loved this - no, it wasn't the "substances" (listening now - still feel the same). Born X-Eyed definately a lifetime highlight - up there w/Warlocks shows - yes, Jerry's not there, but these guys PRACTICED, and put a lot of effor into revamping things to the point they have re-invented the reporiaire. Even Mickey's song was awesome to me (better than 4 new PLQ songs). Even the Fire was awesome - fusion of classic GD with Mickey and Phil's versions. My advice - SEE THIS TOUR! As with any new thing (Brent, Jerry picking up Midi, Hornsby, PLQ in fall 2000-2001), they are an absolute musical orgasm now, but at some point the newness will wear off, they will do an uninspired, crappy tour (think PLQ most of this year), and it will be history - perhaps forever! Yes, I still love Phil's wide open jamming and unpredictability and can't wait for Red Rox, but this is a whole other thing that's different and just as awesome in it's own way -I give all of them credits - Bobby was so serious the 2nd night - played notes, refrained from being a rock star or fiddling with knobs all night - I, as the biggest Bobby basher of all, gained some respect - and the drummers, after that lame 2000 endeavor, man, have they re-invented what they do - this tour will have drums in different, unpredictable places or not at all - like '76-77 - that will make it so much more interseting - 2nd night was 2 mini-drums/space - lots of jams/transitions, yes, I miss Jer, but, damn, the last time I felt this way was 1977, really, really, even more so than the Warlocks, I felt 15 again! Oh, biggest drawbacks - YOU COULD NOT GET FOOD AT ALL - endure a 2 hour food line or ingest more drugs? That was the question. Also, after Saturday, no one could get out (2 lanes for 35k cars?), there was NOTHING TO DO for 2 hours -no food, no vending, no whippets, no disco bus/wet t-shirts - WTF? Some kind of sick cosmic joke? They threw a party and eveyone came but the party? Oh, it was about the MUSIC. But seriously, next time they do this, play some place with 50 EXIT LANES! Ok, so you can finally sign me up for the goober club! Best t-shirt" "So many freaks, so few circuses" Also, a euro-style round sticker (like "NL" or "GD" in round black circle on white), with "DOH" in it! I want that!
>Frankly, I think if the boys grabbed the best damn GD cover bands guitarist they would have ripped things up much more
who, David Nelson? not that DNB is a GD cover band, but the point is made.
Sideshow.....I am completely floored.
I really don't know what to say...as hard as it is to admit...You are on the money....
Except for two things...
1. some point the newness will wear off, they will do an uninspired, crappy tour
This is a two way street. Of course the energy was a zenith for this event. But PLF has proven a band can raise the bar consistently. And any lack of sizzle this PLF tour came from familiarity with the new album. (the decision to promote the album with heavy rotation has been discussed ad nausuem so we don't need to wake that dog.)
2.You forgot to mention LL/SUP from Bobby.
the Other Ones blew away anything/everything PnF has done. I love PnF, St.Louis rocked so hard! best Phil show yet for me but...... TOO was 10 times better. no kidding, it was that good
everyone knows i consider myself to be a stellah prognosticater and alot of times use the songs i think are gonna be busted out next in my post
from last week
>>>yeah carl they won't be playing Here Comes Sunshine for ya niners either...more like LOSER or Born Cross Eyed...depending on how many interceptions Garcia slings
>>>lmao...in kansas 91 there was a guy up front holdin' a sign with casey jones on one side and lazy lightning on the other,healy told him not to worry
i know everyone and their mother called the lazy
just think of the things we're gonna see this fall
help>slip>lazy>crazy
crazy>lazy>fire
Lazy>Supp>Dark Star
I agree with these sentiments
I kept on getting the anti-climax vibe during the first night, Mr. Herring definitely needs to turn it up a notch and be himself. (but in Dead tradition he'll have to learn on stage) It's understandable that he might be a little tenative.
I'm expecting alot more by the middle of Fall tour out of these guys musically. Other than that it was a very solid night. The actually mix or sound quality seemed a little muddled and needs to be worked on.
I think the best thing about the show was the anticipation and amazing amount of energy that was put off by the crowd. And the band let it flow right back onto us. During the He's Gone>Cryptical I kept seeing images of Garcia's face and I could hear his voice! At some point where I began and where I end was lost somewhere and just blended into the 'group mind' and it was a beautiful feeling of togetherness and unity. Hardly ever a negative vibe the whole night. It was magikal for sure. Now that all of this group energy and hype has peaked it'll be interesting to see if these guys can REALLY take things over the top.
hey now!
I couldn't have had more fun. I did not have the highest expectations...expecting some nice moments and otherwise lots of new-band-clunkiness. They blew me away from the start to the finish. The few vocal miscues were more comic relief that allowed my face to snicker instead of jaw-dropping the whole time. My first show was in the 80's, not 60's or 70's, but I have a ton of shows etc, and I came with a critical ear. At times there was heavy fusion (almost return to forever like), other sweet moments, unbelievably good psychedelia, killer climaxes, etc... The big difference here for me was it was obvious that they had practiced a lot and they were trying sooo hard for us. The previous other ones couldn't have made it through songs like born cross eyed (vocals esp). Jimmy had big shoes to fill, and you could tell he was playing like it was the biggest gig of his life. I think he really pulled it off well, especially on saturday. He never stood out this much with the PLQ (which is my alltime favorite band besides the Dead, BTW).
I listened to a replay of the webcast, and there is a ton of subtlety missing. Wait until the tapes come out before making final judgement.
Would love to have PLQ and Ratdog open for these guys....like a show that starts at 3-4pm. If their level of excitement continues at this pitch, the fall tour is going to be a monster.
Still smiling,
Chris Mescia
agreed, the whole he's gone jam was bitter sweet..and more importantly well played. It really hinges on Herring..the good news is he is talented enough...the bad news is I think he needs to listen to a bunch of tapes to better understand how displaying his talent would actually gel best with the boyz...Like Bil Graham said, "they arent' the best at what the do, they are just the only ones that do it"...once Herring understands that, he should be fine.
Nye in oakland anyone?
WOW what a weekend
the boys are back and as good as ever if not better. Jerry just had to die for everybody else to move on and bring back the magic that had been fading over the last few years. The dead was always a collective energy not a one person band, no the music is not the same but the spirit is and I know jerry was there in alpine putting in his 2 cents worth. and smiling fromm ear to ear to see such a gathering of family and friends.
this is what it is all about
strangers stoping strangers to shake their hand
see ya in oakland
Again Rich (Leviticus)- Do you want Herring to sound just like Jerry??? This is not the grateful dead, this is the Other Ones. If you want to hear the Dead pop in a bootleg when you're sitting at home by yourself this Saturday night. TOO is a different band-seven years removed from the Dead. Herring is not Jerry. If they wanted another Jerry, they could probably find someone damned close(borderline blasphemy on this site). Herring will be fine- TOO is just getting it going again and once they get a few shows under their belts they will begin to gel. They're just dusting off those rusty strings. Nobody expected them to come out of the gate charging. They have to build up some momentum first.
Alright..Here we go. This is what I think about Alpine Valley. Now. PLQ is my favorite band. SO I HAVE to go in at 1pm to see em. AND THEN I CAN't LEAVE. Which isn't so bad considering there isn't any food or drinks on lot. No vending they say. So, you are either Forced into the show out of hunger or out of a place to piss. Which it's still okay. Its riot material, but, we didn't riot. I go to the pizza joint for a slice, "Shit, $4.50 for a slice?" Alright!. I open the two boxes and one is HALF the size of the box. I said, "Are you really trying to sell this to me for 4.50?" He just nodded. SHIT. Gimme my cash back. That's horrible. Geeeez, I'm hungry and I don't eat hot dogs. So, I try to make my way down the hill. And what a fucking hill it is. I mean, don't get me wrong, I LOVE THE MUSIC. The music is the ONLy reason I'm here. But..the crowd was just too much for me. I left Alpine Valley with hunger pains and heat exhaustion.
Hey now....did anyone get anything to eat or drink in the two lower spots like on stage left and right when you came out of the pavillion? It certainly doesn't sound like it, with all of the bitching about the lines being so long. The lines were long up in the vending area near the 2nd stage but in my opinion the other vending area lines (expo center and lower right and left) weren't that bad at all. As far as anyone bitching they were dehydrated I only have one question to ask: WHY DIDN"T YOU BRING IN A GALLON OF WATER IN A BACKPACK??? I guess that would of just made TOO much sense. I did that and had plenty of H2O and didn't get dehydrated either day. Or you were allowed to bring in an empty plastic bottle and fill it up at will??? Hell, they filled a gallon up for me when it was empty at the lower right concession area and I felt it was very cool to do that for me! As far as the tunes went, sure the TOO will improve as Fall Tour gets going and it was a good showing for this groups first time out. Born Cross Eyed was unbelievable. It sounded like the album version along with all the trippy effects and vocals...absolutely mind blowing. I'd like to know how many heads out there have ever heard the Dead play that one??? Huh...thats what I thought, not TOO many. Bounced around Saturday on the lawn and had alot of fun! But it was a shame to not pump the sound from the 2nd stage into the whole venue so we could all enjoy. It was hard to hold a good lawn spot and see 2nd stage TOO I must admit. I had 12th row for Sunday and it thouroughly kicked ass down there!!! Great vibes and very excitng to be up close. I did get a chance to personally Thank Dennis McNally for all of his hard work in pulling this event off from all of us. I told him Thank You from myself and from everyone. It means so much TOO so many...Thanks Dennis...You rock!!! Fall tour will rock so pay off your credit card bills quick mailorder will be right around the corner! Peace
>>i know everyone and their mother called the lazy
Damn, Gid, and I thought I was sumthin' special!! LOL!!!
But, needless to say, I was absolutely in my glory to actually hear that live!! WOW!
right on Farky.
can't believe all the bitchin' and moanin'.
get over yourselves already.
go in prepared and you are fine.
took in 3 large bottles of water each day and ate before we went in, yeah I waited in a long line but you know what I got my food and ate and moved on.
It seems like no one ever went on dead tour, remember sold out everywhere, long lines, someone mentioned that they didn't even sell bottled water at Alpine in '89.
whiners stay home!
fools
