Whats the word? Will there be set list and band updates for this evening?
What's the line up......IM DYING HERE!
(((T-Rob Stream)))
If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of the potential, for the eye which, ever young and ardent, sees the possible. Pleasure disappoints, possibility never. And what wine is so sparkling, what so fragrant, what so intoxicating, as possibility!
--Soren Kierkegaard
GODSPEED TO PHIL LESH AND HIS NEW&OLD FRIENDS!!!!!!!!
it gonna start soon!
love the stream
Right on,.... COSMIC CHARLIE streaming along
Look out, Barry Sless is gonna rock your socks off! Peace to all who sail the DNB.

where's the stream?
http://www.live365.com/stations/2012_live
I'm not hearing Jimmy in there....a lot of Barry though. Can anyone confirm. And Molo of course, right?
They're smokin'!
Ok I am dying to know! Whats the line up? This rocks, I can't waite for the tapes from this show!
Trob...hope you're having a blast. The Pre-Jam tonight was killer. Danny Louis stuck in Cincinatti. Good ole Mule, rotating performers in and out with Jorma for the set.
I just joined the stream a few minutes ago.
What I read about:
Cosmic Charlie
What I've actually heard so far:
Althea
Everybody Wants Somebody To Love
(Blues Brothers or Solomon Burke, but with a funkier arrangement)
"Troubled/Broken Man" (?) (not sure, sorry; good tune though)
Did I miss anything else?
Time they are a changin' opened
Times they are a changin' opened
That's it so far
The song is titled, "Lay It All On Me" from the Black Crowes last album "Lions".
Rockablliy - You lied U cheated - oh The Stream is good!
Thanks Cashcrowe!
My fault for having all the Crowes stuff but that one.
Am I hearing two guitars AND the occasional violin?
Who plays the harp? Robinson? Sounds like a lot of fun with lots of dance space so far... I do believe we have two guitars and some fiddle. Yes sir, this fun "new paths" thank you universe for the stream. High Time!!
times they are a changing
Cosmic charlie
Althea
everybody needs somebody to love
lay it all on me
Next time you see me
High time
all man error from live 365 - anyone else having a problem???
Anyone else lose the stream or is it just me?
stream down here
Lost the stream as well. To bad I was really digging what I was hearing.
Lost the stream too.
Sounds really good so far, but it missing the ">'s"
Sugaree Stream is back up
stream down...
but it missing the ">'s"
It's first set dude. They're sounding like the Dead in '71. Powerhouse 1st sets; one hit after another. Enjoy it.
Sugaree in progress....
Stream was up here but they just finished Sugaree & it stopped again.
Sh!t stream down again
Yeah, 71 first set is about right. Lots of pauses between well executed songs. Thats why I was looking forward to these shows. Based on rummor alone it sounded like it was going to be a new twist to the grateful dead song catalog.
Are we between sets or has the stream just paused again?
It was fun while it lasted! I came back up for a bit but they wanted me to register and I tried to skip it, now the "link" is not hot.
PL-"new"
12/17/04
(confirmed played so far, may not have all tunes listed)
The Times They Are A Changing (Dylan, I would guess)
Cosmic Charlie (?)
Althea
Everybody Wants Somebody To Love (Blues Brothers / Solomon Burke) (slower, funky groove)
Lay It All On Me (Black Crowes)
Next Time You See Me
High Time
Sugaree
Stream apparently not happening right now.
Its back up and the band is taking stage....Cassidy.
Damn, is that Bobby singing?
I believe the Dylan was some very well thought out house music. On the stream it sounded as if the "band" walked right out on cue as it were. I could not help but think how perfect it was to start the new era of The Friends outfit. The band sounds again fun. Given how it has sounded so far, T.L.E.O. is my new pick for this run.
Sounds like Bob !
I'm fairly certain that's the sacramento dead show from june, not live phil we're hearing or not hearing on the stream.
Apparently, it is "Bob" but from one of the summer Dead shows. Gives a new meaning to "Dead" air.
Check ... check ... one ... two ... sibilance ... more cowbell.
setbreak perhaps?
Alright we are live and direct! sounds like break to me. This stream plays Dead stuff in a random playlist I am sure that Cassidy was one of these tunes. Lets hope for some Jammolla in the next 90min!
By the time I connected, Live 365 playlist said Marysville. Cassidy was played at Marysville. Thought I heard Warren as well as a bunch of Jimmy. Kicked me off. Reconnected, now I hear crowd. Playlist "not available".
Man where is taper rob with the pictures? Its got to be starting up again soon since its after 10 pm West coast. I wish I was there..
Maybe they'll do a mash-up with Jay-Z.
Shakedown
Shakedown! Sweet!
Shakedown - with horns?
Yes, horns & funkdy Fender Rhodes too!
Get down!
We have some new parts to the puzzle, saxaphone.
pedal steel i think or was that a slide?
Candyman
Holy Buddy Emmons! Pedal steel!
Sless on steel? So nice.
gotta be barry sless
about time the boys got funky with Viola.........Turning it up a notch!
Whoever it is, sign him up & get him on board for the "40th" tour.
this makes me so damn happy. got the stream goin. got some of Jah herb. This might not be the real thing, but man oh man is it sweet. this viola lee is ROCKIN'
Oh yeah! Phil & the new 12/17 Friends jamming & streaming for ear candy, and Susan Sarandon on TV (Late Late Show, mountain time) for eye candy!
Great Viola..........no games there.
Violin on Wharf Rat is a really nice touch.
prediction
01->days between
"my feet I swear they are burnin'" The Nelson nod! Wicked Messenger! I love the internet.
Holy shit - are they doing "what's become of the babby?"
Wow what happened, crash! So, how many days is it since the last S.F. Whats become Of The Baby. Better call up the dentist. What a change of direction in the second half...whats next Careful w/that Axe Eugene.
Barry will set off this Fire, old school 80's Dead style!
Back into the Other One!
First the Zone was down, now the stream is down.
Can someone tell me how this is streamed? Someone in the tapers' section with a laptop and a wireless connection?
What happened after Fire started? Stream droped.
Do I hear a small number of orchestral instruments tuning up?
fire sounded sick! This stream sucks, set break? What happening?
Looks like I reconnected just in time for the break before the encore.
Now why is iexplore.exe using 40MB of memory?!
Phil speaks!
sweet PHILosophy...
I think were all donors by now!
MUST BE DONOR!
anybody get all that?
is there no Barraco??
Gloria, Jackie, Dave ellis(sax), Kevin?(horns), Marty?(horns), Molo, Molitz, Sless!, Tim?(violin), John?(mandolin), Jimmy, C.R., Lesh. It is offical. Piece for you!
probably marty weiner. i've seen him play with dave ellis before.
No Way!
Double friggin' encore?!?!
I'm still blown away by that shakedown!
This maddness keeps right on goin'
So, do they dust off a Don't Let Go... or a 70's style Dear Prudence... It seems like they have all the components. Great time tonight, like the old days when it was all new...again. I still say T.L.E.O.

Phil does not disappoint!
That Viola rocked (and the violin was a nice touch). Ruben and Cherise had a big sound with the horns.
what is rre?
Railroad Earth
I believe those folks are w/the band New Railroad Earth (RRE)
Sorry, my mistake.
RRE = Railroad Earth (a band)
I see, thanks.
Cal, thanks for putting together the song and personnel lists.
Looks like that is it Cal. C. Good job bringing it all back home as they say. I did not know Bob Dylan wrote Wicked Messenger? I know it through the Nelson Band. Just goes to show... Music is folklore. I have to work during the webcast on Saturday but will check here for all the news thats fit to print.
....nice jamming, CR seems to be a nice fit, new colors/textures (fiddle, pedal steel) worked well. Sless and Herring will need a little time to gel. I know "What's Become of the Baby" sucked the life out of the place, did the show ever really recover...? The novely of that song wore off 20 minutes before it ended, IMHO.
Kudo's to Robinson, Sless, and all the other Phriends, old AND new! Thank you Phil!!!
Bob I must agree w/you about the life factor, it sure melted down my desktop! The first half had a fun dance groove going Lied & Cheated realy rocked, BTW who played harp on that #? The second half seemed a little disconnected to me. Almost like "Baby" was set in stone but how to get there and back again was not a all thought out. Just my .02. The stream droped just as Fire kicked in so I missed that but I am sure Sless rocked on that one. I think this band could do some great things on stuff like Big R&R Blues, Smokestack, Second That Emotion, and dare I even mention a Day Job. We will all be on the edge of our chairs again. But I must know: when was the last S.F. What's Become Of The Baby? Has it ever been performed. I thought I could have had my teeth driled I was so out there!
...WBOTB, according to Deadbase, has never been performed before.
I suppose I should be excited that I saw a breakout, but I'm not....just a little numb still, LOL. Did anyone catch the New Age-y vibe during the root canal?
The times they are a changing was played while the curtain was still down. it almost sounded like it could've been jimmy on acoustic with rre mandolin dude and chris robinson behind the curtain, but i think it was a recording. it was especially cool though, cause i've never heard the pre-show music garner applause before.
They opened up with cozmic before the curtain went up. it was a nice effect ala one from the vault or something.
Chris robinson is almost like a cross between pig and morrison. he did a nice job on the althea. and a kickin' next time you see me. one of my personal favorites.
Barry Sless sounds so much like jerr sometimes its scary. AND he plays the pedal steel!!
During the shakedown i noticed that the horns were playing bobby's part. i got a nice chuckle out of that.
Jimmy laid out during what's become of the baby, which was amazing, by the way. molitz(particle dude) was goin crazy on the synth. i almost thought they were gonna go into in the light. and came back out with an acoustic for driftin too far from the shore. and i think it was during the driftin that i noticed that only chris robinson was visibly singing! i guess the jerry girls had a mike backstage or something. for a moment i had the ridiculously strange thought that they might be lip syncing or something. it was bizarre.
The caution and other one caught me off guard, as i was calling an anthem of the sun one night. I figured they'd close the last night with an alligator>caution>feedback>bid you goodnite.
i dug the hard to handle partly because it was my first one and on top of that they did the little modulated jam during the solo, with sless and herring eggin' eachother on. they did this all night actually, it was pretty cool. jimmy plays a really mean rhythm guitar too.
I was really happy with the old school set up they had. chris really brought out the pigpen. fortunately there are still tons of songs to choose from. i'll be there every night to see how the "plot develops".
Only performance known:
April 26, 1969, at the Electric Theater in Chicago.
"What's Become of the Baby" appeared in a monster encore which included drums, "Viola Lee Blues," "Caution Jam," feedback, and "We Bid You Goodnight."
Great set, abit on the dark side. I swore I heard tease of milkin that turkey during viola lee
oh, and phil and chris were singing on wbotb, by the way.
somewhere in there phil threw in a little odd couple tease that he and molo seemed to have some sort of code about, i think coming back into viola at one point.
Whats become of the baby was totally outrageous. New phil space>old mickey space
I think Blues for Allah is comming our way.
i wouldn't be a bit surprised at just about anything right now. nice work by molo on baby too. and sless gettin' spacy on the steel.

Rail Road Earth
They get lots of press on the zone, but I've never heard them.
show was HOT!
barry sless!!! INCREDIBLE!!!!! the best, most underrated "Jerry" player around. glad phil finally realized it! music reborn from the ashes. what a blessing!!
CR sounds great on Ruben and Cherise!!
I am so hoping for a full blown out spring tour!!! This lineup is just fine with me.
Great, great show!
Phil and Jimmy lit up the stage with those big smiles they flashed all night. Gloria and Jackie were radiant. So warming to have them share the songs with us again. John, I love that man! And the rest of the folks mostly new to me (Dave Ellis aside) sounding and playing those magical songs. Looking forward to doing it again tonight.
btw, I think Dylan was behind that curtain. just like the wizard in the land of Oz
ummmmmmmm...WOW!!!!
pissed that i'm not there...
lovin' that shot of the entire band w/ horns and the Girls on vocals....
different tonight?!?!
What a crazy night!!
Half the fun was just seeing how it was going to all unfold. As mentioned before when Gloria and Jackie started singing "Times.." the curtain was down and I think the only back up to them were John Skehan and Tim Carbone (behind the curtain).
And then they just laid into Cosmic and the curtain raised and it was on!!
The first set I thought was really fantastic. Tight, sound was excellent, and a good interplay between the musicians. It felt like an old school first set where there was not much spacey trippy music...which suited me just fine. Althea was a scorcher. Tim Carbone was excellent although you could hardly hear him at times....TURN HIM UP. Each song had a different vibe to it which I really appreciated.
The second set...well ...ughhh.
Shakedown started great and the candyman, viola, and wharf rat went off solidly besides a few bumps but then the set just took a crazy turn.
>>>I know "What's Become of the Baby" sucked the life out of the place, did the show ever really recover...?<<<
I agree....the second set was two hours and the Baby just drained the place. I was so thrilled to have a seat upstairs but besides one dude (not particle dude) who was tripping most everyone was on their ass. And it was hard getting out of it. I thought for sure they'd play a cumberland afterwards and that would be it...but instead they took this amazing shift into 'Drifting'. I felt like this was a great transition between songs but the slowness didn't help the modd of the audience.
During caution I joked that the band would play an other one just because the set was getting so long (little did I know). Jimmy and molo and phil really took over in the second set and I wish they would have let the other musicians help out more. Sounded a lot like the intense jams of this summer which i am not a fan of but I guess to each their own.
Hard to handle was surely the closer and most people i believe were relived just to get out of there alive...but nope....other one and then fire and the hits just kept on coming. Crowd got up for Fire and it was well played...I remember shouting frantically...NO mickey to everyone around me...so thrilled.
When the set was over it seemed the crowd wasn't fired up at all...more like gentle applause.
Phil fucked up the introductions to the band...((((embarassing))) but I'm sure he'll straighten it out tonight. (What you don't even know who you are playing with?)
And then the double encore ....dude you got two more nights!!!!
On one hand what an amazing night of music...very diverse...on the other...my face was ripped off and I don't know if I can handle two more night's like last night. We'll find out tonight. ;)
Jimmy...was in fine from. No warren overbearing him.
Sless...was fantastic...a perfect fit.
Jackie and Gloria...really helped out on the choruses and in mixing up the sound of songs. Yea!
Horns...need to play more and better...but still good.
Molo was in a groove last night, really looked sharp...
Carbone...awesome
Skehan...only played on a few songs...turn him up as well. The RRE guys have to compete with Jimmy and it's tough.
Phil...bumpin that bass
Particle dude..held his own...got lost a couple times but not too shabby.
I think that's it?
Pretty good show, good for a run opener. The first set rocked and was good to dance to, not enough jamming. Sugaree had its high points especially the huge jam part. High time and Althea were both great. And a charlie opener!!!
Second set opened with a short shakedown into a very well done candyman. They teased caution twice before actually playing it, once during viola and once outta wharf rat. Whats become of the baby was a great suprise i happened to like it. THe wharf rat was awful as was the vocals on caution. My stream dropped out at the beginning of hard to handle so thats all i heard.
rob, thanks for the stream. helping me get through working on yet another saturday
skins, thanks for the call last night, schmegg and I took a little break from our business and cranked up the live365. we need to hang out soon

Drifting Too Far From The Shore
Hard To Handle
Excellent review, zang....and great band insight's but: you forgot Mr. Robinson, who, IMHO, did a great job: respectful (none of his usual histrionics), and he really laid into the ballads (Sugaree, Wharf Rat, Candyman) in a soulful way, he had obviously rehearsed the songs...Chris keeps the southern boogie tradition of the Phil Phriends intact. A great fit, I hope he stays with us for a long while....!
thanks for the pics too!
yes, great shots indeed
good points about the What's Become of the Baby>Drifting
I was thinking about how many folks were drifting a bit 'too far' as this unfolded..perhaps the really *gone* needed to be eased on out
Yo Prods
I've been obstinately holding out for some sort of Phil Band NYE last minute thing..even thought about Vegas for Moe.
I guess I've settled on 12/30/31 RRE<-->Mule
I let y'all know as soon as the counterbalance falls into place
NIce PIX, thanks TROB!!!
good stuff man....
PHIL has it going ON!!
All Ihave to say, is I don't give arats ass if you custies were bored with What's Become of THe Baby, FOr me it couldn't have come at a better time. I was in the middle of a painting and my whole shop turned into Acid Land! Damn Phil Nice fookin Breakout!
Water and Fire, Smoke and Ice, put it all together.....what a nite
I thought the show was incredible. I grinned from ear-to-ear all night.
I felt that the core of the music was each musician contributing to the whole. Never knowing what sound was going to come from the stage.
I love our bus driver!
To hear these songs over and over again, and to hear it with a different twist was f-cking amazing! WBOTB > DTFFTS, very cool.
Please look at the buttons we handed out to you when you came in. Hint: 3 different phases printed on them.(Each night being a seperate act?)
Remmeber to have fun!! That's why were here, right?
>>>>>you forgot Mr. Robinson,
yea...I just took my cue from Phil during band intros...he totally forgot Chris until someone pointed it out to him.
Chris didn't bug me at all...i liked him a lot. Never had any problems with him before hand and I don't afterwards.
The show last night was as good a show as anyone could have asked for, for a bands first time on stage together. If you count, there were thirteen diff. performers throughout the night. That makes for some diificult transitions but they pulled most of them off in my opinion. This was not the best show since sliced bread but I had a good time and to me thats all that mattered. It will take some time to get used to CR's vocal tones he has a large range for a while during caution he sounded like Joan Not really but it was my joke last night. My highlights were Next time you see me WBOTB and a smokin other one. Phil looked like he was havin a blast!! Not feeling terribly clear this morning so I will review again when my mind clears
I'm gonna go right out on a limb here, and say that this could be the best incarnation of friends yet.
The Phil, Molo, Herring triad is starting to prove better than Cream.
Barry Sless was AWESOME. He really nailed that "Jerry sound" without sounding like he was trying to rip off Jerry's "sound". It was obviously HIS style.
I'm still trying to decipher the larger message intended. There were definitely powerful messages being conveyed through the lyrics. I kept catching bits and pieces of the larger message. There was most certainly a "theme" to tonight's show. If you guys click on the What's Become of the Baby on the official setlist from Philzone, you can check out the lyrics. Pretty heavy, with all sorts of religious and historical referrences. And check out the story by Hunter about how the song came into being. I, for one, was totally captivated.
Driftin' Too Far From The Shore has long been one of my favorite bluegrass spirituals. This, for me, only took it to the next level. After going SO FAR out there on Baby, I thought it kind of poetic to say they'd drifted too far, and, subsequently, snap it back with the supercharged Caution. Molo has got to be the most gifted drummer on the planet.
I thought the personel choices were brilliant. Phil has got to be the most musically minded tactician who ever lived. The setlist, if you ask me ( I know you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway.) was obviously meticulously arranged. After the first set, I found myself thinking that one could not have asked for a better first set(with the possible exception of the Crowes tune, which was still pretty good). The Next Time You See Me and the High Time were two I might have picked myself, and I thought Phil sang High Time really well. They had a little trouble finding the end of Next Time, but the fact that they even played it more than made up for that.
There was never any doubt in my mind that Phil was totally going to bring it at this show, and he did just that.
At this point, I would hesitate to make any predictions, as I think the possibilities are limitless. I would, however like to say that I've always thought that "Lovely Rita" would make the perfect Phil tune, not to mention "What a Bringdown" by Cream >> Will you, won't you, do you, don't you, know when a head's dead?<<
And of course I would always go for a big fat alligator. I have this great version at home from 67 (pre Mickey) that has to be one of the sickest ever. The way they intro it, it almost sounds like it might be one of the first times they play it: Bobby-- "We've only got time for one more, so we're gonna do one we laughingly refer to as 'Alligator'. Ha Ha".
One of my personal favorites( and apparently Phil's least) is Cardboard Cowboy. That would be really cool if you ask me. Or maybe another Alice D Millionaire. Huh? What do you think guys?
thanks for the stream and the pictures.........helps make not being there a little easier
cant wait for tonight
GODSPEED
What's become of the Baby was nothing short of phenominal. It was perfectly placed, and it was SO SPACY -- WAY further out than I've ever heard before. "That Guy From Particle" was laying down the trippiest soundscapes of any Dead-related performance. Phil started with a rocking Shakedown, pulled it ALL THE WAY to WBOTB (which was way, way, WAY back) and then eventually rebuilt it to the Fire setcloser. That's a LOT of musical ground to cover in a single set. I've never heard anything like this show. Awesome.
Times are a Changing was sung from the balcony to our left of the stage. Spotlights were on the ladies, but if they were behind you, you wouldn't have seen them.
Speaking of the ladies, you should have heard the cheer from the crowd as they were introduced. They got the loudest, longest, most enthusiastic cheer of all 13 musicians. Welcome back.
That's the moon hanging there for the 2nd set. It was mostly eclipsed last night, but towards the end of the night, it started coming out of the eclipse. It'll be interesting to see how it looks tonight. That's straight off Phil's website, btw.
This show goes down as a SMOKE DADDY show. The area I was in -- YOWZA. I sat next to a young couple who, while being to "hundreds" of shows, this was their first Warfield show. Welcome.
The first set was for shaking out the jitters. I could imagine Phil saying, "Alright, everyone comfortible? All right - let's break and bust it out for the 2nd set."
SO good. . . I guess I'll stop gushing.
the pedal steel work by Sless in Candyman was pretty sweet. whole show was pretty awesome on several levels.
\
I wonder if the moon will change locations on the set?
The Times They Are A Changing was teh perfect opener, and the way they did it before the curtain opened was awesome. The perfect message. The Q was great, but the times have changed and this is the new thing. It was awesome and Baby was sooooo trippy. I loved it. I am truly blessed that I am able to be here.
What's Become of the Baby expanded my whole idea of what is possible in the universe...it was ten minutes (I guess) of the most transcendant, transformative music I've ever experienced. The audience was just stunned, in rapt attention. Gone were the chattering idiots of last summer's Shoreline Dead fiasco.
The whole rest of the show smoked as well, including a number of extended Molo-Phil explosions of energy.
Enjoyed most of Robinson's vocals, though for me they worked a lot better on the non-Jerry tunes, and actually even those were okay, as long as I wasn't looking at him while he sang -- something about his stage presence is, well, sort of unseemly, when singing one of Jerry's tunes.
Fucking great to see Jimmy totally ripping again, no longer caged by the Dead's format and mushy mix. Sless, on both guitar and steel, was also fantastic, and the fiddle worked amazingly well on most all the tunes it was played on. Particle Dude ripped it up as well -- lots of expansive organ stuff, and was the generator of most of the ambient stuff at the core of What's Become of the Baby, which as I said, seems to have changed my life.
Rob what? Warren who?
{{{Baby Popi's Acid Temple}}}
what's become of the baby....if you read Hunter's notes on the link--is such a quintisential example of what the dead is/was all about. god bless phil for resurecting yet another forgotten chapter in thier story. and that they followed it up with a bluegrass number says it ALL.
there are some seriously deep lyrical and thematic threads in this setlist.
He's traveled so far beyond the role of bass player, band leader, musician...there is no preccedent for what he is doing.
I'm speechless...........
Thanx Phil for delivering a wonderful world of music & vibe, for all of us to alk about & appreciate!!!!!!!
God bless Sless!!

Thank YOU Phil..
i guess the jerry girls had a mike backstage or something
They were in the birds nest on Jimmy's side up near the loge, right in front of me.
Phil delivers the goods. Again. Beyond expectations. Without adequate description.
Amazing old school showmanship. And the magick trick inside.
CHRIS ROBINSON!!!!
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW . . . just gettin' my act together today . . . indescribably AMAZING F-IN' SHOW!!!!! The FRESHNESS of it for me just completely made it - having every song be a NEW experience really kicks things up a notch - and I think so for the players - you could just FEEL it so much in their utter enthusiasm during everything - sadly this was starting to lag in the latter years of the "Q" and once again Phil proves he is THE MAN for knowing what to do at the exact right time - yes I'd bashed Chris Robinson but he ended up working out PERFECTLY - yes if I had to do a blind taste test I'd rather hear Warren sing those tunes but to hear him in this context really made it all work together perfectly. First set was indeed all songs and really only gave hints of the potential - the RRE fiddle dude really ROCKS OUT with this band - WAY more than he does in his own band - at times it was hard to tell Jimmy and Barry apart - Jimmy really changed his approach in this band - you could feel the familiarity of Phil, Jimmy, Molo, then the new guys added so many cool twists - and this only in little hints in the 1st set - which was only 56' long - but I just KNEW they were gonna explode and man did they ever! The 1st 2 tunes of the 2nd set sorta continued the 1st set but at least featured the 1st real transition - then VIOLA LEE - and they EXPLODE with incredibleness - in the middle they do a thoroughly explored THE SEVEN jam (Hart & the Hartbeats Oct 68, also explored in Viola Lee 4/26/69 & 11/14/02 - STILL my favorite Core 4 Reunion show despite Mickey thinking it sucked). Then they stop and Wharf Rat - Oh did I say the fiddle dude really added some cool fills during the rockin' space jamming - unexpected. And Oh Taper Rob works his ass off to keep the feed going - yes he lost it a couple of times and he has to reboot his laptop and reinstall the program every time it happened - man that's tough during such a wild show. (cont'd)
The end of Wharf Rat really built up into a wild jam, heavy Caution teases, where it occurred to me that'd be the coolest thing these guys could do (couldn't have been more right about that) - then Phil starts singing, recognizable lyrics, WTF???? OH!!! WICKED MESSENGER!!! That is SUCH a cool thing when a tune is pulled off like that - Robinson playing WICKED harp - then deep space - What's Become Of . . . - Phil proving his ultimate geekness in pulling this off - yes too deep for most - me probably one of the very few there actually digging this - yes, something weirder than Blues for Allah, too weird even for me? NO NEVER!!!! But who knew it had so many lyrics? Only @ the Warfield in SF by Phil could this ever be pulled off. Then Drifting - oh yeah the JGB singers were up in the box off to the side - this was an interesting twist - again very nice contrast of different types of music - rockin' jamming, deep space, gospel - only Phil could pull this off - then back to jamming and it's obviously Caution - and what a version! Without a doubt the best post-Pig version - Robinson gave it some justice, not showing off too much, just enough mojo - MAJOR jamming, off into space, back to the Mojo Hand part, then Hard to Handle, again Robinson did it justice, nice melding of different versions, horns (only 2nd tune they showed up on all night) used well, again LOADS of intense jamming, then a suprise again of The Other One, figured they'd save this for another night - not a long version but I'd thought H2H would be the last tune since the 2nd set was at the 100' mark - then Fire sung by Robinson, again on Fire, literally, started to be concerned about my 125' tape running out - just barely fit - 122' set!!!! - Then a double encore - 26' - a lot of which was Phil's rap - very nice, passionate, he forgot the RRE dude's names then forgot to intro Robinson, again, Phil, total geek! YEEEHAAWWWWW!!!!! Oh the funniset thing I heard all night "oh, you're from PUSHY SHOVEY land" (referring to being from the east coast). I even got to prove my bad vibes by stealing a spot from a handicapped guy (didn't know they were until the wheelchair pulled up after I told them they couldn't have my spot) Oh well guess it's a lifetime of coal in my stocking. I did apologize and offer them cd's of the show (yes I gave out my REAL email addy!). What else can you do when you've been a total asshole?
Yes Chris Robinson!
Chris Robinson is the hottest, sexiest band member ever. More enjoyable to watch than Donna or Joan Osborn. Even though Joan was really sexy, Chris gots her beat. He's so cute!
I was waiting for your take Sideshow and I got thoroughly pumped reading it, Enjoy the next 2 nites.
Phil has taken this thing to such incredible new heights, it just about leaves me speechless.
"What Became of the Baby?" indeed:
CHICAGO (Reuters) - The father of a baby girl snatched from the womb of her strangled mother greeted the infant as a miracle as the two were united after a grisly murder that gripped the United States, a Kansas hospital said on Saturday.
The girl, Victoria Jo Stinnett, was healthy and "a miracle," the Stormont-Vail hospital in Topeka, Kansas, quoted the girl's father, Zebulon Stinnett, as saying after the two were united late on Friday.
.....
great review sideshow (((the seven jam))) ey!
handicapped seats LOL!
i was grooving to the feed last night, it had and old 68 kinda vibe mixed with some fresh blues, i was surprised by robinson's deep vocals, thought i heard sless wailing a leed on the other one.
>>>>>>>>>the two were united late on Friday
wow, magic.
>>at times it was hard to tell Jimmy and Barry apart
I had no problem telling them apart - I was dead center and the stereo separation was perfect. Jimmy coming from my left Barry from my right. I was thinking during the show how Warren was starting to dominate the Q (as he does in every band he is in - he has such a strong presence - no knock on him). Phil did the right thng - starting something new. It was awesone. Funniest moment of the night. Phil talking to another band member after the first set (I forget who) and then steppign up to the mike to say something with the curtain closing on him. He just shrugged.
The Wicked Messenger by Bob Dylan:
There was a wicked messenger
From Eli he did come,
With a mind that multiplied
The smallest matter.
When questioned who had sent for him,
He answered with his thumb,
For his tongue it could not speak, but only flatter.
He stayed behind the assembly hall,
It was there he made his bed,
Oftentimes he could be seen returning.
Until one day he just appeared
With a note in his hand which read,
"The soles of my feet, I swear they're burning."
Oh, the leaves began to fallin'
And the seas began to part,
And the people that confronted him were many.
And he was told but these few words,
Which opened up his heart,
"If ye cannot bring good news, then don't bring any."
I'm noticing that there seems to be the reoccuring theme the protagonist wanting to please, and then one of persecution, rejection, or retribution, and the protagonist trying to rise above and overcome. Among other things.
What's become of the Baby
Waves of violet go crashing and laughing
Rainbow winged singing birds fly round the sun
Sunbells rain down in liquid profusion
Mermaids on porpoises draw up the dawn
What's become of the baby
This cold December morning
Songbirds frozen in their flight
Drifting to the earth
Remnants of forgotten dreams
Calling; answer comes there none
Go to sleep you child
Dream of never ending always
Panes of crystal
Eyes sparkle like waterfalls
Lighting the polished ice caverns of Khan
But where in the looking-glass fields of illusion
Wandered the child who was perfect dawn
What's become of the baby
This cold December morning
Racing, rhythms of the sun
All the world revolves
Captured in the eye of Odin
Allah, pray where are you now
All Mohammed's men blinded by the sparkling waters
Sheherezade gathering stories to tell
From primal gold fantasy petals that fall
But where is the child
Who played with the sun chimes
And chased the cloud sheep
To the regions of rhyme
Stranded cries the south wind
Lost in the regions of lead
Shackled by chains of illusion
Delusions of living and dead

Background
Robert Hunter explained something of the background to how the recording came about during a concert on 10 June 2003:
I think a lot of people don't realise that "What's Become Of The Baby" was a very beautiful, art-nouveau kind of thing. But the thing was, Jimi Hendrix was going to come over to the studio, so we decided to get it good and weird so he could hear it.
I'll just start it, to give you an idea how Jerry originally wrote it, and what it was intended to sound like. I won't get the chords right, so I'll just sing a verse.
[sings first verse and chorus]
It was a minuet, but we already had one minuet on the record, which was "Mountains Of The Moon," so we just got really ripped and decided to screw with it bad!
quote:
"Speaking of the ladies, you should have heard the cheer from the crowd as they were introduced. They got the loudest, longest, most enthusiastic cheer of all 13 musicians. Welcome back."
So true and well deserved!
Wonder what's in store tonight?
I'm nourished, ready to pack party supplies. Stop for toys and off to the show!
Hey there,
I got Phil's setlist of last night's show. If anyone knows how to post it I can send you a pic of it I just took.
Thanks.
~Chris
Thanks to Chris
Thanks to all for sharing the buzz - that was awesome! So glad to see that a good time was had by all - Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
Most importantly - any Kate Hudson sightings? I'm so proud that she's now officially part of the family!
just perfect {{{GDad}}} glad you're there!
Very interesting, and mostly excellent show. A couple of thoughts:
Chris Robinson worked pretty damned well, I thought. Seemed like he got a bit twisted up during Wharf Rat (seemed like confusion on timing with Phil, who may have thrown him off - could just be my hearing). I still can't quite handle anyone's version of the vocals on Caution other than Pig. Rob didn't quite do it for me (not NEARLY ballsy enough for this song) and Chris R just seemed to be going through the motions - not really his fault - this is Pigpen's song and nobody else will ever give it the feel he did... sorry. Other than that, Phil and Molo were thundering and it did rock pretty hard.
Turn Barry Sless up!! He seemed a bit too low in the mix early in the show from up in the balcony, but seemed to be a bit louder towards the end (particulary his awesome solo on Fire). I love Jimmy, but Barry's fantastic and provides a more laid-back Jerry-type of sound - one that complements Jimmy, but also needs to be heard.
What's Become of the Baby was awesome, though perhaps a bit long for some. That and Viola were the highlights of the 2nd set for me. However, I really didn't quite get the transition into Drifting too Far from the Shore...seemed rather strained to go from deepest, tripped-out psychedelia into this quiet country/bluegrass. I could've seen this song better placed as an encore, or somewhere else. For me, that threw me for a bit (especially with Caution to follow). Oh well, it's Phil...he has absolutely no limits!
The 2nd set (dare I say it?) was almost (I said almost) too long. I thought some of the tunes could've been left out and the set could've been a bit more cohesive. Like someone else said, it could've easily just ended with Hard to Handle (thought it would), but then we get Other One and Fire?!!! Holy shit!! Plus two encores! I must admit, the show was about an hour longer than I would've expected, but, hey, I'll take it anytime.
Oh, and the Railroad Earth violinist f-ckin rocked!! He's great. Give him a few more solos.
Can't wait for tonight...think the band will only continue to gel more as the weekend progresses. And as much as I love the Quintet, I think it was about time for Phil to try some new blood.
See you Zoners tonight!
Oh, and yes, as my girlfriend pointed out to me from our vantage point in the lower balcony, Kate Hudson was watching from stage right...wonder if Goldie made it??

Adios amigos
wicked messenger
dylan tune
covered by David Nelson Band, of which Barry Sless is a member.
PLEASE COME EAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HEROIC!
btw, I think Dylan was behind that curtain. just like the wizard in the land of Oz
I think so too
It was definitely being sung live, no prerecording
Dylan's voice was there with the ladies
I believe he was also singing from backstage during Drifting too far from the Shore
didn't you notice the overabundance of Dylan tunes at the shows??? Times,Wicked Messenger,Wheels on Fire, Watchtower, Knockin on Heaven's Door...
just an extra secret surprise for those paying close attention
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain
the themes of these shows can be explained by the print that they were selling at the show, beautiful print. it had a tarot card for each night the first night was "the fool" card probably having to do with the far out ness they had that night, and with "these times they are a changin" playing before the cutain went up explained everything to me that this was going to be all new. the day 2 card was the "death" card and the somgs seemed to have death overtones like dire wolf, death dont have no mercy..etc most of the songs had death or murder in the themes. the day 3 card was the "wheel of fortune" which represents the future, which of course they played the wheel, imagine, launchpad, not fade away, songs that had to do with the future, so there you go the explantion
PHIL DOES IT AGAIN!!!!!!
Irony of ironies, I'm closer to the shows than usual--out on the coast of California... but had NO IDEA>..
PLEASE COME TO DENVER !!!
