Jam: Dark Star

If Rock Star Robinson is gonna stick for tonight, i'm bettin' on PigPen tunes:
Easy Wind
Hog for you Baby
well he sure did a good job on Next Time You See Me.
"rock star robinson"? you really haven't been paying attention for the last 5 years have you...
chris just pushes this line up over the top. best call yet phil!
Chris was not the rock star last night - he was just the singer - very laid back.
OK just woke up and rarin' for tonights show. Gonna hook with some othr zoners who might have hangovers. SF is gonna rock tonight. Gotta pace myself after last night, the Warfield balcony was swaying so much I almost lost my balance.
don't you guys know sarcasm when you read it?>> "Rock Star" Robinson <<
Honestly, Chris did do a fine job...
I was particularly excited to hear a post GD Fire on the Mountain w/o Mickey singing, but then the stream cut out on me...
Beyond his vocals, however, I thought the addition of a harp was sweet to hear in the pl&f mix...
can't wait for tonight!
Easy wind would make me happy.
I wanna hear robinson sing loose lucy
Chris nailed 'em dead last night. Great shit!
chris just pushes this line up over the top. best call yet phil!
Yer damn right, trippy.I've said all along that Robinson's got some fine pipes.
Easy Wind would schmoke or High Time.
I an new to this web site. I have enjoyed the dead family bands for years though. I just want to thank all you people. Your reviews were sweet it was like being there. I couldn't get the live stream last night but listeded to the 3 nugs posted on this site. What a treat that was.
A sincere thank you to whoever posted these nugs and reviews.
Looking forward to the just announced midwest ratdog shows.
hows about a nice 'Til the Morning Comes?
Is tonites show also going to streamed live as last nite?
I loved Chris's phrasing.
Dig a Pony, Easy Wind, Hog, Chinatown Shuffle, Brown Eyed Women, Doin That Rag, Mission in the Rain, Mississippi Half Step, and/or Eyes would all be cool.
sless adds that jerry tone like kimock did- perfect comping to herring. i had never heard sless's playing until today, but now i think he is the savior to the deads music- simply amazing
The Wicked Messenger by Bob Dylan:
There was a wicked messenger
From Eli he did come,
With a mind that multiplied
The smallest matter.
When questioned who had sent for him,
He answered with his thumb,
For his tongue it could not speak, but only flatter.
He stayed behind the assembly hall,
It was there he made his bed,
Oftentimes he could be seen returning.
Until one day he just appeared
With a note in his hand which read,
"The soles of my feet, I swear they're burning."
Oh, the leaves began to fallin'
And the seas began to part,
And the people that confronted him were many.
And he was told but these few words,
Which opened up his heart,
"If ye cannot bring good news, then don't bring any."
is there a recording of this show posted on any bittorrent sites? im hitting my refresh on bt.etree like every 5 mins just WAITING
I heard that the only people staying for tonight r gonna be Moltizs Molo and Herring. If so mayb we can get bobbie for a FEW tunes. It also looks like warren may be there on sunday. And mayb kimock if him and phil could patch things up. I no jorma is in ashville for the winter jam but theres still a cance for him sunday night.

Just curious, why is it that Deadheads are seemingly taking to Chris Robinson's singing now, but complained up the ying yang when the Crowes were part of the 1997 Furthur Tour?
Was it because the Crowes headlined and were a really good band?
I am a music fan, not just a Crowes and Dead fan.
No harm intended, I was just curious.
Peace
when does the show start
Is the show going to be streamed again tonight and if so is it the same link as last night. Thanks
torrent of last nite is up on etree!
12/18 stream?
i missed last night and have been kicking myself today.
Dead show playing now here in Bozeman MT, but i need live Phil. spose i'll check the link from last night.
lets rock
So far wats become of the baby and cosmic charlie have both bene played and are both off of aoxomoxoa. I think i see a trend if so we still got St. Stephen, Dupree, Rosemary, Rag, mountains, and china cat. Also looking at the track list for Aoxomoxoa Cosmic charley is the last track on the album and whats become of the baby is second to last. so they could be playing the album backwards in wich case id say a china in the first set with mountains and rag in the second. But thats juss my prediction. Im prob looking too deep into this
gotta love a merry prankster...all this talk about phil killing the second set with ... wbotb...phil know's what he's doin' and know's cause and effect. it's not the first time he's drifted to far from shore in the middle of the second set SPACE>can you pass the acid test
if i had the world is an excellent call and CR will sing (my fav dylan) Tough Mama tonite!
phil, hold me tight and don't let go

I think that is the deal Knute
did you hear that hurts me too?
twas sick
Having just one drummer really allows for some flexibilty with the improvs. Billy proved that 30 years ago and Molo is proving that now.
I missed the first set i just logged on

If so it will be China>Rider, but I doubt it, I smell Help>Slip>Franks, St Stephen, Terrapin, and maybe Cumberland. GDTRFB is always a possibility but I doubt it.
This line up of P&F sounds much more like a "Dead" revamp with the soul of the 60/70's sound. I think this band has great potential if they stick around.

Shows have sounded sick, overall. This has surpassed my expectations by far. Phil is just simply amazing. I am lucky enough to be heading there tomorrow night. Wondering if anyone was there last night and can give me the scoop on the toydrive/poster deal. This Wheel's on Fire
If your mem'ry serves you well,
We were goin' to meet again and wait,
So I'm goin' to unpack all my things
And sit before it gets too late.
No man alive will come to you
With another tale to tell,
But you know that we shall meet again
If your mem'ry serves you well.
This wheel's on fire,
Rolling down the road,
Best notify my next of kin,
This wheel shall explode!
If your mem'ry serves you well,
I was goin' to confiscate your lace,
And wrap it up in a sailor's knot
And hide it in your case.
If I knew for sure that it was yours . . .
But it was oh so hard to tell.
But you knew that we would meet again,
If your mem'ry serves you well.
This wheel's on fire,
Rolling down the road,
Best notify my next of kin,
This wheel shall explode!
If your mem'ry serves you well,
You'll remember you're the one
That called on me to call on them
To get you your favors done.
And after ev'ry plan had failed
And there was nothing more to tell,
You knew that we would meet again,
If your mem'ry served you well.
This wheel's on fire,
Rolling down the road,
Best notify my next of kin,

I love what I'm hearing... continuing the true spirit of what the Grateful Dead were all about, Phil has successfully re-invented this music for the umpteenth time. Sless and Robinson make a great combination! I'd so much rather hear them do stuff like this than simply cover standard GD tunes played in the same ol' style. not first time played by P&F
played at Beacon in 2000
so very well done....! powerful as hell, huh?
BOBSTAR HE TOO TIRED
Yeah, i dont like this arrangement, sucks the life outta it
Actually in 7th, not minor. I'm playing along.
WHEEL
ya the chat said plq played it before
ELEVEN
Wheel tease at least
It actually sounds like he is trying to sing the words to "Imagine" using a different melody line structured to fit over the backing chord progression. Having said that, the backing chord progression almost sounds like a George Harrison style tune, so do we have some kind of Lennon/Harrison musical exploration tribute here maybe? Especially since they have now moved in another direction?
Remember, it's all about testing the boundaries.
THIS SHOW IS WAY TO SLOW SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE LETS PICK IT UP BOYS GOLDEN ROAD???
Wheel with steel would be nice.
I'll be there tomorrow...

Man I am really digging the fiddle in this lineup.
FUCKIN AWESOME...tell it phil
So, should the setlist maybe warn people not to expect the usual version of "Imagine",
or do we just let them find out themselves?
No matter, we're back on the blues track! "Death Don't Have No Mercy". Love it!

If that's still the "Particle dude" on keys, they have done Floyd stuff as well.

wpouldnt that be nice
I'm sure all at the Warfield are shakin' their bones!
20 minutes to 1 pacific time... plenty of time for a 2nd encore...NFA ??? do they have it in them? This fiddle playing is BAD-ASS! .... ditto the sless' solo!
bid you goodnight would fit in with the dying/heaven theme.
me thinks phil is the miles davis for the new millenium.
I say: Sing Me Back Home.
Wouldn't that work nice with this PARTICLE-ular line-up?
The PesTTTTTT
That Sless guy, A OK with me.
that solo made me want headband. why isn't he there. headband rocks!
how about angel band?
I guess GTRFB into Good Lovin to close it out
The best thing about Barry Sless is, IMO, he knows how to lay back and not get off to fast. His steel solo just now was hot and short as to get every one in on the jammolla. He is a good fit in this band. I love The Nelson Band and he is a big part of that outfit.
Has anybody mentioned Papa John?
I HAVE seen the Saucers.

tomorrow night will be the show!!!
this definately helps with the whole "no more Q" thing...what a band

Life, Death, Rebirth... In a classic three act play the protagonist is at the lowest point of the "journey" at the end of the second act. I have never thought much about "setlist" story telling, I always thought it was about key and music style not song choice or order, but... Phil is on to something heavy. Peace to all who have and will sail the Dark Star.
love this country rock sound... congrats to Phil on re-inventing the GD sound once again... and staying true to the spirit!!!

2nd set kicked ass.
just got back, incredible show(s) though last night first set still tops all for me......with the exception of that FRI 2nd set Shakedown opener.....soooo tasty...
Tonoght had a different vibe...."the core" Molo, Herring and Lesh were the big anchor driving and steering the ship tonight...but wow, CR stepped up on his tunes....40 days, Wiser Time and NO More Do I ...along with that barn burning GDTRFB.....were incredible.....Sless, HErring and guy from RRE just blend and mix to create straight cliff notes to the skies....really moving stuff that sears through the thunderous bass and rythmic grooves Molo and Phil layind down. Ears are still ringing from riding the stage front right in front of the AMPS and the CALI glitter girls twirling and dancing like goddess in the music sun's ray. Have to get some zzz,ss till tommorrow...hope for a mornin comes tommorrow night..am callin it...PEACE and goodnight all!

can anyone give info on: Lonesome Valley, 40 days, Wiser Time. not sure about these. what's there origin?
hold on...everyone pump your breaks....?grammy?...we'd send a cutout again...this show was up and down, not solid start to finish
let me preface this with i've seen( hundreds) and heard (thousands) phil play live, this show like Gdad said was GOOD
my girlfriend has seen 5 shows 4 dead 1 phil...impartial...listining to this was her 6th "live show" (now granted we weren't there)but this show ranked third on her list (she's heard better stars") etc. above scranton 04,clevland 02 and below beacon 03,bonnaroo 04 and atlanta 04...why?,she's not big on new country southern rock, plain and simple. Conversly driving home we put in my first show 7/9/89 "now this is singing as the boys harmonize a perfect jack straw after a hot shakedown opener, but honey i tell her "it's their second night" . "i know" she says, "CR just wasn't doing it for me" and Warren never did either...geez ...there's alot to be grateful for of course and god help me for saying this but Trey is our best vocal option right now...IN PHIL WE TRUST...i'd love a long MLB tonite...stream ya later
Taper Rob,
The stream was awesome, thanks fo rdoing a great job on it!!
Last night's show from my point of view in my house was fantastic!! Good good music- Thanks to Phil and the Boys for a job well done.
600 posts in HERE???? You guys should of hung out in the dog pound last night and saved this for the people that attended the shows, i mean really!!!!
>>>That setlist looks absofuckinlutely sick.
looks is right...hurts me to and lonesome valley sounded as good as they looked
(maybe death dont, the floyd and rosemary were very nice)...
...youv'e heard much better versions of everything else but it's fresh for sure...LOVE the instrument mix POTENTIAL...CR HAS NO BUISNESS SINGING CHINA DOLL ...but maybe he was off cause the (fri) althea was decent
Show was a rollercoaster last night but unlike the first night, the band finished off sets in amazing form with the crowd really fired up. And that made a huge difference to me.
First set was much slower than the first nights but Peggy-O was really nice and I dig the tunes like Lonesome valley. Hurts me too was solid but Casey Jones was just a fucking rocker with Robinson keeping the song in high gear. The whole place was jumping. Check it out.
It was clear to me there was some sort of pain/death overture at this point as mentioned above but I was still trying to figure out the previous night.
No horns but there was much more Tim Carbone and John Skehan. Carbone was more in the mix and could be heard but rarely, do I feel, did they give him the time to really show what he can do. A lot of 30 second solos but not the ones we see with RRE. Skehan was still low in the mix...I wonder if its him or the sound guy.... Also Barry Sless had his night...The whole first set was about Barry and he really played well. One of the weak parts of the show was the person doing the spotlight on soloists. He was always thirty seconds behind and by that time the solo was over. Just drop it IMHO.
Like set one, set two open with a song that sounded familiar but I didn't know. The shift into black peter and then another random song was a slow start I would assume for most of the crowd (not poorly played just hesitation for the dead heads looking for the power songs).
And then Boom DarkStar...short and peppy...not spacey at all (see tonights verse 2) and I really enjoyed it. Very tight unlike the other recent DS's i've seen and a nice change. And then Holy shit Rosemary which Canyon and I had just been talking about earlier in the day. A very nice treat.
Imagine was played in an entirely different way than Lennon sung it and I would guess some people will have a problem with it. The version was played very well but I haven't made up my mind on the twist.
Death Don't was a religous experience, awesome
Eclipse (heart beat?) were fantastic
and then Terrapin, where molo just fucking exploded and drove the band. Phils lyrics were a little rough at times but this is how terrapin should be played. Molo was on it all night. Watchtower just added another level to the intensity terrapin had built up and China Doll brought us back down to reality...or did it? At this point the band had really found a groove and as far as I was concerned it was rolling along. Unlike the previous night where everyone was sitting at the end of the show...everyone was full on their feet bouncing along (somehow doing the exact oposite of the life, death themes of the two nights) Rider was a strong finish to the set and place was juiced.
Tonight should be intersting for sure...Definitley will get dark star V2 and maybe an eyes. Pull out yourdeadbase for those oldies..I wouldn't want to miss it after the first two nights.
>>>CR HAS NO BUISNESS SINGING CHINA DOLL
I thought he did a fine job. And if it was between that or Phil, I'd take CR. Perhaps they should just let Gloria and Jackie sing the whole show.
This was one incredible show by a truly amazing band! There was a new twist or surprise around every corner. Imagine>Death>Eclipse I was blown away. Chris stepped up on vocal duties tonight and pulled through nicely. Jimmy and Barry are a great team. And the rest of the band were incredible.
As for the theme check out the design on the shirts and poster! There are 3 tarot cards, one for each Act. The middle one is the Death card, so this was nicely planned out. The first could very well represent Life, it looks very alive and bright. the third card looks to me like Heaven & Hell, Good & Bad. You decide. I can't wait for the show tonight!
Peace
Forgot to add. there is a Wheel in the third card, so that may be a nice clue to at least one song tonight!
>>..G.dad...give us a review to remember if you are up to it.
Havin difficulty comin up with sentences to describe show..Was in Balcony 2 Row H...not floor maybe that has somethin to do with it..
One thing tho..the sound was beter up there than it was on floor Act 1..
Act 2 started at 8:30 ended 1:00 AM great great show..No let downs a rocker..
Don't Murder ME..Please...Please don't....
Black Peter..what can I say..
A really frickin good show..I am so lucky to be here..
Avalon AllStars show was pretty good also..Was good to see Melvin the guys..
gr8fuldad---any guests at the avalon?
nice G-Dad
the brevity of your statements speaks volumes with regards to the sick festivities that must have been had out west last night
just enjoyed an admittedly late wakeNbake breakfast while jamming AoxomoxoA(they're killing the Eleven, bonus from the box set, right now) If I ever win the lotto I think this is what I'd like to do everyday
coulden't help but intently focus on the words to Rosemary and What's Become of the Baby and think about whats going to unfold for y'all tonight
leave it to Phil to challenge us to peak our imaginations
if

play
>>>And if it was between that or Phil, I'd take CR.
it's a personal thing for me , just like i much prefer to hear phil doin' the DEW than warren...i've spent 15 years groovin' and want phil to sing these ever impotant chapters(and he flat out does it better with out that southern twang)...soon you will not hear his voice
yes, yes
I've always been an advocate of Phil singing the the Jerry titans. Warren does them a great deal of justice, possibly as much justice as anyone who wasn't actually "there" could be asked to do. The fact that he wrote "Patchwork" also helps me get into him singing the Jer tunes
still though, when it comes to the poignant, give us Lesh
'tis about the man and the journey..
not the "voice"
Chris Robinson is a fantastic singer and adds a lot of soul to the tunes.
I know some people never liked his singing, as I have friends that never have, but you cannot deny the guy's songwriting (overall) and his massive respect for those who came before him, including Jerry.
Chris is as big a music fan as you will find anywhere and he is a HUGE Dead fan.
This includes ALL music.
This leads to how well Chris can sing.
I thought his phrasing and delivery have been classic Chris so far, and it's nice to see the Dead community appreciating it.
In my opinion, there haven't been too many singers in the last 20 years that can touch him.
I don't know about anyone else, but this incarnation of Phil needs to get some more time to breathe.
3 Shows in SF would be an injustice to fans across the country.
Best lineup ever for Phil/The Dead.
Are you serious? 617 posts!? Ah, man, by the time I get caught up, there will be nothing left to say!
I DIG the Pigpen stuff...
John Molo! There are no words to express his greatness.
And I loved Jimmy Herring's "Fuck You" to everyone who complains he plays too many notes/too fast.
Nice reviews Happy Holi and Hail Skins...
First set had its moments - I'm surprised I didn't see mention of the solos during It Hurts Me Too - Herring just went off with the sick wailing feedback blues solo - held one screaming note for about 30 seconds. He definitely had something to say on that tune. Dire Wolf was sweet (unfortunately I was just feeling the effects of something coming on and wasn't quite in the right space until late in the first set).
The 2nd set just raged. This Wheel's on Fire (not Wheels of Fire - who posted that on the setlist? Oh, well, it was probably really late) was a really sweet way to open this set. A great, somewhat obscure Dylan tune - nicely done. Black Peter was sweet - another nice tune with Barry's pedal steel playing - he played a lot of pedal last night, it seemed. Heard the Dark Star coming and it didn't disappoint - had a lot of nice soloing from various members. Rosemary was a damned sweet surprise (and, yes, it seems like they'll be playing all of Aoxomoxoa - well, not sure they'll get to China Cat tonight, but... or Dupree's for the matter) - lovely little tune, but really short (too bad they couldn't have played a 20-minute version like the version of What's Become the previous night - just kiddin'!). Imagine was a little bizzare, with the sort of repeating minor theme and not much variation during the chorus, but still a cool choice. Death was pretty sweet, though I'm not sure I'm wild about Gloria and Jackie appearing in the balcony for these tunes - it's rather theatrical and I guess it's pretty cool in that respect, but I find it a little distracting. The Eclipse was cool, though I must admit, I almost thought this was going to be the finale of the set - I MUST HAVE BEEN HIGH - what, Phil and the gang not play another 2+ hour-long set? Who am I kidding?! Then came the Terrapin I'd had an inkling of - Holy Molo, did this version rip!!! The boys just tore it up! Phil and Molo were just taking it to new levels, and Jimmy and Sless were fantastic. They did a really cool sort of double-lead thing on the resolving riff during the Terrapin section. Really tight, and Molo was just going off like a madman! I was in Heaven for that tune! Next, the Watchtower was really sweet and China Doll was a nice surprise, and sounded really good (kudos to Chris R for pulling this off rather nicely). The Rider was icing on the cake.
As for the themes of Life, Death and Rebirth, previously mentioned, you folks either pick up quickly on these things, or you were at the show. The show poster and t-shirt are comprised of pictures for 3 acts: Act I depicts a minstrel with a rose and stringed instrument, his belongings and dog (it would appear) happily roaming in the sun; Act II is Death riding an ominous blue horse, with bones strewn about; Act III depicts a wheel and a hand and finger pointing up to the wheel from a fire (Phoenix rising from the ashes?), with angels and other winged creatures around the wheel. So, I guess that would clearly indicate rebirth. Wish I could post a photo of the design, but I don't yet have the means. Those of you who'd mentioned this in earlier posts well before this weekend clearly know the right people.
Awesome show, awesome time. Act III tonight surely won't disappoint.
Long live Phil Lesh!!!
i am really hoping for a china cat and the wheel will be played
OK, just posted how much I digged last night's show, now here's the ugly, negative post (and I'm sorry, but it needs to be done).
If I ever end up sitting next to one more idiot (and realize I'm in a good balcony seat, and have no option but to stick it out) who bothers to pick up his cell phone and call his buddy during a Dark Star again, I'm going to wring his f-ckin' neck!! What is the goddamned problem with these people??!!!!!!!!! If your stupid-assed buddy isn't there to see the freakin' show, well he or she can just log on to a computer (what, they're in Outer F'ing Mongolia without access to one) and listen to the streaming audio. What a pain in the ass!!! And not just one call! I'm sorry, but the lights and shit eminating from your cell phone during the spaciest part of the show is way too distracting. Go out in the hall, go into the can, or just go f-ckin' home, will you??!!!
And, as for your stupid buddy, who didn't get a seat with you guys and has one somewhere else but is just too much of a clod to go sit in it, if you're so absolutely lame that you have to stand in the aisle next to me (us) to start talking to your friend (whose ass you obviously need to lick), well just suck it up and don't say a word until the song breaks. I don't need you leaning in front of me every ten seconds to see how your friend is reacting and give him some ridiculous thumbs-up or tell him to stand up during Death Don't Have No Mercy!! Will both of you please get a life - and go back to your goddamned seat!
If your seat sucks, well, I'm definitely sorry for you, but that's what you got and you'll just have to live with it! These aisle roamers are a freakin' pain in the ass. I understand standing there for a minute or two while you get your bearings or right as the show is ending, but, for God's sake, JUST SIT IN THE GODDAMNED SEAT THEY GAVE YOU!!! Maybe the reason your seat sucks, is cause you've got bad karma!!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, I feel better now...
REALLY digging these shows. Been a fan of both Crowes and Dead for years and loving this collaboration... REALLY hoping they make their way to NYC, but I'm not holding my breath.
The folks saying shit like "rockstar Robinson" got to chill.
I hate to break it to you, but The Grateful Dead were "rock stars", too.
I'll bet lots of folks complaining about southern twang are turning around and listening to Garcia/Grisman without a second thought. Exactly where do you all think bluegrass and blues music come from, Vermont and Northern CA?
I don't mean to piss on anything or anyone here, just wish some people would open up a little bit rather than just hating on musicians that they don't know anything about first hand... especially when you seem to get so offended when people act that way toward the Dead family. But overall the vibe here seems pretty positive, which is cool.
My favorites from last night's stream...
It Hurts Me Too
Wiser Time
Dark Star
I Know Your Rider
Can't wait to hear what they play tonight... I think it's really cool that they play a couple of CR's tunes every night.
>>>Who are you people?
The ones that are not flaming egomaniac attention whores.
If Bucky weighs in on this, it goes over 1000.
Hey now Alexw,
What a great post!
>>>well just suck it up and don't say a word until the song breaks. I don't need you leaning in front of me every ten seconds to see how your friend is reacting and give him some ridiculous thumbs-up or tell him to stand up during Death Don't Have No Mercy!! Will both of you please get a life - and go back to your goddamned seat! <<<
You just eloquently expressed my greatest pet
peeve at a show.
It ain't a fuckin' cathedral and it's only rock and roll but show some respect to the musicians and to the audience.
A clown like that in the aisle would get a quick rebuke from me and a strong recommendation that he return to his original seat (hopefully a long way away).
Cell phones need to be banned during the performances.
Oh, the JGB women sangthe verse where Peggysays she will marry Sweet William but he has no money.
anybody have the timing? just wondering what the 2nd set clocked in at. 2H ____ min ???
great show for the SF crowd, excellent time on the floor with a cold sierra in hand.
how about some reviews from some attendees? that 600 post thread is a bit much, thanks.
words cannot descrribe what happened last night !
hope you were "there" too !!!!!
that one is going to stay with me for a while
I was "there" via the internet and boy was I sorry I missed the show. My buddy was there enjoying it live for me, but I will probably be jealous the rest of my life. I was there Friday night and the show was incredible. Chris Robinson adds such a dimension to Phil and Friends I can't describe. He sings with such soul and passion it's awesome!
Last night sounded awesome - can someone put up the seed on BT? I can host on a full T1 also!
thanks taperrob - ewould love to learn more about how you set this up. My buddy Pete is there in the tapersw section with you somewhere all 3 nights! thanks again!!!!
>>Heart Beat<<<
Man, I had no idea Phil was a Don Johnson fan. Haven't heard that tune since the '80's(though it might have been on one of those worst songs ever shows)
Having the Railroad Earth boys there realy brings new life to the Mix, but if ya get a chance to see Railroad Earth you better go, it takes only one show and your hooked, and right now you can see them in small venues, but as the train keeps rolling the stations that they pull into will be getting bigger. Belive me I am a "Head" who is now a "HOBO" and can not stop ridding The Railroad Earth Train
ALL a board, "One long party from front to end".
no one seems to care except you matty
get over it
last night i went to a Phil Lesh & Friends concert and i was given a sermon I won't soon forget.
Another well done performance from Phil & Friends. The storyteller is in phine phorm.
No new friends this evening and no horn section. The core for most of the night were 10. Phil, Jimmy, Barry, John, Steve, Chris, Gloria, Jackie and the 2 fellows from RRE (sorry, don't know them). Phil was wearing the featured concert shirt, 3 tarot cards depicting the story for the 3 nights. Last night Death was featured and the music was very representative. High light for me, Death Don't Have No Mercy. Gloria and Jackie singing from the balcony. Knocked me out! Chris' voice got a little rough last night. His 2nd set opener, This Wheel's On Fire was hot! He also took out the acoustic guitar and joined the band on strings several times throughout the night. Most of the band was on stage for most of the night, very pleasant music and good company for the death songs. No one wants to be alone with death around.
Tonights tarot card brings the Wheel around.
"This card represents the grasp on the personna by understanding who you really are." If I didn't know better I would say Phil is finally dealing with and accepting the loss of Jerry. Just my $.02. Looking forward to the Eyes Of The World upon us >>> bound to cover just a little more ground!
The Wheel has been the song for me that sums up the music since Jerry died. I have lots of friends who haven't been to a show or heard one since Jerry died. Too bad, the music is growing and the friends that come along to share such with us have been nothing less of phenomonal. Thank you Phill for keeping the wheel turning!
THEY PLAYED ECLIPSE. ive always wanted to end a show with that tune.
A great show listenin to the peggy-o right now and its great. Chris sounds a little weird on it but its pretty good.
Standing on the Moon tonight might do me in
I was in attendance the past 2 nighs, and WOW, what a couple shows.
Jimmy completely backed off first set until the Hurts Me too, and second set wsa just off the hook jamming from Jimmy. He went places last night even I did not think he could/has.
Barry smoked, the DeathDon't was a real nice treat, as was the ROSEMARY!!!
Thanks, Tore Up. Great review.
What was the tarot card for the first night?
It looked like a Minstral strolling in the sunlight...
the Fool was Friday's card
../7267/133798.html"POST940540">
Great show last night..Any band that played so well for 4 1/2 hours, I dont care who, would get my respect....This being Phil Lesh and Friends..how lucky we are..
>>>I would say Phil is finally dealing with and accepting the loss of Jerry.<<
I think he did that in "No More Do I" (which was in the setlist). Maybe he's talking a bit more broadly now, like about The Dead.
"No more, no more, no more do I
Seek reflection in a dead man's eye"
i feel really positive about this line ups potential -minus CR, twang don't murder me, sless rips( DNB)say no more...that being said
i belive new speedway will fit nicely into tonites theme...and in time we will hear great and not just good performances of the songs we all know and hopefully will come to love...IN PHIL WE TRUST
BUT SERIOUSLY LAST NIGHT DOESN"T EVEN COME CLOSE TO SOME OF THE FORMER LINE-UPS OR GRATE SHOWS OF THE LAST SIX YEARS, ie. 4/20/01...does anyone disagree with this
Thanks T.U., good stuff
Most people here DIASGREE with your thoughts about Phil's other incarnations being better than this.
Open yer ears.
Do people not realize that most of the Dead's influence came from the South anyway?
Blues, Bluegrass etc..
"Southern Twang" - Funny
Gotta love the closed minded Dead fan when they feel threatened by "outsiders" who haven't been officially "blessed" by Deadheads yet.
Scarlet tease for sure, it's coming tonight!
Fucking Awesome. Warren who?
when i hear CR i don't think grass valley and the wonderful spring board jerry STARTED on...more like skynard
>>>Most people here DIASGREE
not so sure about that... it's the many years my ears have been open that make me so critical and if anyone thinks last night could even sniff 4/20/01, they just haven't been listening
>>>Gotta love the closed minded Dead fan when they feel threatened by "outsiders"
that's not it...if it doesn't sound as good as the bar that's been raised...well
Where is the BOBSTAR...or something remotly as talanted...and i'm not talkin warren here
Tore Up, your review does kick ass...very cool about the depiction of the tarot card's...tonight is definatly going to be a resurrection of sorts...
that dark star>rosemary>imagine>eclipse was nothing short of amazing, i still have chills...
so far i am beyond impressed with what i've heard from the stream (thanks TR)...
we are all so lucky
>>>sorry, don't know them
Oh but you should...don't miss them next time they're in town
You are embarassing yourself comparing Chris's singing to Skynyrd. You sound like a music critic who heard one Crowes song, knew they were from the South and wrote them off immediately.
It's your loss.
I have that 4/20/01 boot it's not that good.
To each his own, but I am enjoying these first two Phil gigs.
The violin and Sless are great too.
2 excellent shows, CR has held his own in front (and center) of some very serious warfield music snobs and critics
phil has hugged robinson several times, both nights right after the 1st sets, so obviously he has been moved by his performance, and the rest of the band as well.
I was in the balcony Friday and on the floor last night and the shows have been awesome, the mix is fantastic, the brews and ghanga are flowing; Let it Rock is right.
comparing chris robinson soulful, passionate singing to lynyrd skynyrd is like comparing jerry garcia's guitar playing lawrence welk's accordian playing...
i'll say it again, this band blows the Q away
this band blows the Q away<<
LMAO
I'll take Warren singing over CR 8 days a week.
I like what I'm hearing, and I'm intrigued by the possibilities, but this band has miles to travel before it even sees the Q's caboose.
Warren needs a PBR bottle and some dynamic to his voice.
LMFAO
They need to get John and Tim 'talkin'' to each other onstage for the real RRE magic to shine.
some pics:
Direwolf
Black Peter
Dark Star
Death Don't Have No Mercy
All Along The Watchtower
Nice pix!
All Along The Watchtower
I'm hoping that phorty years of phriends doesn't miss this chance at the Warphield.
Would love to have something phrom all of them.
Regardless, I'm so happy to be a phriend.
>>>You are embarassing yourself comparing Chris's singing to Skynyrd. You sound like a music critic who heard one Crowes song, knew they were from the South and wrote them off immediately.
the many mud vines i've collected get 0 play time...though i've givin them a shot, conversly i've got a '71 ABB blarin in the kitchen right now
>>> have that 4/20/01 boot it's not that good.
that says it all
see ya all tonite PEACE
B, your on the money, and you would know
What's up with the negative creeps? These shows have been great, especially for the unit's first couple of times out. I thought last night was better than the first night, and tonight's will be even better.
People complaining about "southern" influence are hilarious. It's like when the Crowes headlined Further and everyone complained about how "loud" it was, despite claiming to be big fans of Hendrix and Janis.
And for the record concerning lazy critics -- almost every review of a Black Crowes record from Rolling Stone or Spin compared the band to Skynyrd - this despite how much the band obviously changed over the years. It's like the old standby for music critics. I don't remember anyone complaining when Mick Jagger put on a twang or when (gasp!) Jerry Garcia did.
I said it on the other 12/18 thread and I'll say it here - blues and bluegrass music didn't grow out of the freaking ground in Vermont and Northern CA.
Gotta love it when people confuse their own opinion for fact.
>>>>the many mud vines i've collected get 0 play time.
Good thing you collected "many" of them if you don't listen to them at all...
Oh, and the Mud ain't the Crowes. Just like the JGB wasn't the Dead.
To heck with the Mud vines... check out a Crowe vine from 1996...
Mud were best with the first lineup with the Stacey Bros.
>>>>Mud were best with the first lineup with the Stacey Bros.
That ain't sayin' much...
It says more than the '98-01 Crowes!
>>>>It says more than the '98-01 Crowes!
Can't argue with that, Audley-lover!
comparing chris robinson soulful, passionate singing to lynyrd skynyrd is like comparing jerry garcia's guitar playing lawrence welk's accordian playing...
Trippy,
You have a nice way with words.
I couldn't have expressed it better myself.
that psychedelic fiddle is oh so sweet, and Jackie and Gloria are incredible, I hope they take more leads tonight. These musicians work so well together. What a gift Phil has given us with this band - hallelujah!
Ditto nutcracker... that fiddle is excellent.
Great, great band Phil's got together.
Anyone else blown away by the Terrapin? The jam in between the first two parts - wow - it goes so many places.
yea i am blown away i really think they need to keep this going and bring it east for all the people to enjoy
>>>i'll say it again, this band blows the Q away
agree...much more to my liking but everyone likes different things.
>>>>that fiddle is excellent.
Tim Carbone Fuckin rocks...go see RRE.
I'm one bummed out puppy right now. Phucking missing act III.
Thanks Phil!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>I have that 4/20/01 boot it's not that good.
mmmmmm....okay.....yeah.....whatever.....
>>They need to get John and Tim 'talkin'' to each other onstage for the real RRE magic to shine.
This ain't RRE....this is PHIL AND FRIENDS.....Them two boys will add some nice fills, but they're clearly background players.
Holy shit - just tuned into the stream today and the Darkstar Jam is blowing me away!!!!!!
The twirlers must have been going nuts...Yahoo!!!!
It will take time for the levity of these shows to set in. doesn't seem there has ever been sucha deliberate, calculated theme/message in any Dead related circle like this before. The musical intellect of Phil is astounding, but his heart and soul, and plain humanity came through last night, with the overwhelmingy capable help of every person up there on stage. Not one weak link or iffy players, at all. Every person in that band gave a piece of themselves for the whole good - Phil's incredibly introspective, sweeping, yet humble fable-story. And this wasn't no fuckin' rock opera, but a strong, deliberate story told by song choices, by their lyrics. Most every song selection had heeaavy weight to it, a lot of purpose. The skeleton of it, just still a rock concert, but inside, a whoooole lot more. I am not a Phil freak, in fact I hate(d) his singing. These past shows though - an about-face on my part. Granted, not great, but good, and fitting into the right vocal style. His coice of bandmates this time around is the strongest yet, and may say again, deliberate. No offense to Barracco, and fuck Warren (you guys need to get over your musical stubborness on that one), but those guys did not hit as deep as this new line-up did on maaany occasions that night. Jimmy and Molo are Phil’s compatriots now, they are the ones that have been most responsible for his highest moments these past few years. And to have Jackie and Gloria grace us? How moving is that? That is one of the most touching, respectful, intuitive decisions of this whole line-up. Because that is a direct-line to pure Jerry, his spirit, those Ladies.
Highlights (note: all night(s) must be judged as a whole. It was all a highlight. This is just the highs of the High):
Death Don't Have No Mercy: Let me begin by saying, I was pretty much brought to tears when shit hit the fan. This was it right here. If any of you say you have a spiritual side to you, whether it be your own personal guide or whatever, Jackie and Gloria touch right on the deepest, basest part of the soul here - the point that all religions, faiths, spiritualities are meant to guide you to, where all the roads lead to, no matter how you get there. With them in the balcony, the show is brought now to minimalistic strength, just you, the band, the Ladies, and Phil's message to you.
This Wheel's on Fire - I have never heard a more cool, tasteful, gutsy version of this song ever. Chris is awesome, people. He has great taste on the whole. The style of singing here shows that he has a great internalization of Dylan...which you have to have if you expect to cover a Dylan song, you have to feel Dylan's words are talking about you or a part of you. And the arrangement, Phil makes it sound vintage, straight out of the 70's, and ENERGIZED. Nothing like the sloppy, dirgy versions the Dead would sludge through those last years, on the off nights. By far one of the best Dylan interpretations I've ever heard.
China Doll – There just seems to be so much PURPOSE laced throughout the night. China Doll, already heavy with meaning, buoyed tonight by this purpose. Another teary-eyed moment.
More to come on the Finale…
I was at the shows and had a blast!
The shows rocked!
The rat dog shows from slims were close but this was the bomb.
>Just like the JGB wasn't the Dead.
however after these shows, clearly
Phil is Dead long live Phil!
The music for 'Imagine' on Saturday night was from 'Here In My Room' by Incubus from their most recent album.
Just back from the bay last night,
Checking in here about the shows.
I've gotta say (as a die hard phil head), what a relief to have
so much intention and new energy in the Phil corner. It makes up for the trainwreck dead and the extinct Phish.
I'm laughing my ass off at the Warren vs. Chris competition. In my mind they sound almost identical when it comes to the vocals. As far as guitars go...well Jimmy is always more audible and free without the super slide of Haynes tinning up the mix and tho I'm not a huge Sless head, his round tones really evened out the sound in these shows. I feel truly blessed to have been in front of the band for this Winter Solstice song cycle, it hit me where I lived and did that good ole grateful dead trick.
Long Live Phil!
>BUT SERIOUSLY LAST NIGHT DOESN"T EVEN COME CLOSE TO SOME OF THE FORMER LINE-UPS OR GRATE SHOWS OF THE LAST SIX YEARS, ie. 4/20/01...does anyone disagree with this
Disagree. And the old PLQ may have played itself out anyhow.
Suday was as good as anything I saw from the Q.Like I said in my other post (see 12/19/04 new thred)When the band takes you to the place that feels like home!!! When they are that good it all becomes the same, HOME I can't tell you that one is better or worse if they take you home what else are you looking for. I is there someplace you would rather go than a place as comfortable(sp) as HOME.
I thought this was the most powerful night. Cannot say it was the best but whoooh! it was something else.
Chris did a great job on Hurts Me Too. I was really impressed. I thought he came strong every night.
The girls singing Death Don't was tremendous. Jimmy sounded great. Molo was out of control. Explosive. Everyone had something to add.
Eclipse? WTF??????? WOW. I was kinda floored.
Terrapin was machine like.
This night moved me.

I talked to Jimmy at the SF airport after the shows, asked him to compare the freedom of the PLE with the Q...he stated that he had much more freedom playing with Warren, mostly because they've been playing togethr for so long....then volunteered that he really liked playing with Barry Sless too....I get the feeling Jimmy likes playing. period.
..
Having now heard the sbds and fully digested the music (several times) I want to say this is the most meaningful GD related music Ive heard post Jerry. The lineup is incredible together and Phil is so much a part of what shapes this music. Bringing in the pedal steel, fiddle and mando are indeed an inspiration... sweet, sweet sounds. This increased contrast still gives plenty of room for Jimmy Herring to get his licks in with lots of tone and emotion.
I love the multi-show theme. There are so many mind melters on these 3 nights. Long live the ensemble! Take it on the road!
