the start of the tour
will report back tonight
Wahhhhooooo
Anybody out there? I'm really psyched for this band. Just saw Joan Osborne at Telluride Blues Fest- she's just such a powerhouse. I think she will bring out the best in everyone. If Warren sits in in Vega$ this could be the best Phil band yet!!!
don't bother Wino, we will wait for someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
So where's the posts. It's 10:45 hee on the West Coast.. SHould be set break or more?
C'mon pholks...who's got the setlist from Bimbo's? This is very Ratdog.orgesque to not have anyone posting the list from the tour opener...We are better than that!...
No reviews is pretty weak. Hope the shows reviews are not.
Como esta mi amigo Cosmic? You been in my thoughts. Hope you are well.
Bien..With my glass of RED I toast you amigo..You have been in my thoughts as well friend. I'm gonna be alright.

Damn..tht's good music!
C'mon Doogs...How's your memory bro?
I might have to reconsider Chicago.....
I need some Phil in my life right now.
just got off the phone with dcf.
"Trancendental" show according to him. Barry rocked NFA with the Wolf and Jimmy was sheddin' all night. No hesitation with this group last night, just balls to the wall fun!
Apparently the Garden Of Eden and The Other One were the highlights of the night.
phil tour...

Zero Complaints...Box>Cosmic now we talkin..Garden of Eden>TOO wow
"Nelson Tune" was probably "Any Naked Eye"
awesome tune.
As good as it gets.
GDad, I probably should have mailed those discs already, huh?....
El Rey Theater tonight for me..
Damn.
the Triple Headband Show...the rarely seen. Barraco/Sless/Nelson, each headband larger than the last, left to right.
definitely was Any Naked Eye. setlist seems right on.
zoners kicked off the deck at Kennedy's for bringing their own potpourri.
Great show! Jimmy fumbled a bit during King Solomon's but it still was exquisite. I didn't even notice Barry was playing wolf!!! I would have gotten up front to see, my (not so) old eyes don't do to well even from the back of Bimbo's. David Nelson was a perfect choice for this event with no Ryan and no Joan, and he brought a good old earthy early 70's dead/nrps vibe right with him. I wish I was seeing the shows at vegoose!!
Oh, and error on the setlist, Nelson sang Wicked Messenger....
Holy Shit!!!
Nice setlist...
Talkin bout Phil mixin it up, blowin some minds and bringing the THUNDER!!!
and Sless on the Wolf ?
THATS WHAT IM TALKIN ABOUT!!!
looks sweet on paper, bet it was better in person...
hope all you bimbos had a good time...
Is "Wind and Rain" Oh, Wind and the Rain"?
You know...the song selection looks pretty good. But I can imagine how the band (with all due respect to recent previous line ups) with out the distraction of horns, violins, soprano back up singers, and the rest finally decided to get back to the core and probably rocked and jammed liked they had not for a long long long time?
By the way I did not see the show.
But wish I did.
can't wait to hear it..
now where's my headband?!
Setlist looks cool...would love to see David Nelson w/Phil...Who sang Walrus? Did Barraco sing lead on any tunes? Looks like mostly Nelson & Phil.
Too bad no tapers, maybe a Phil SBD? Please?
>>Jimmy was sheddin' all night
Picturing piles of long reddish/blondish/grayish hair all over the stage.
Man I wish I would have seen that lineup. That Garden of Eden must have rocked.

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
No, Phil didn't play Pink Floyd, but they were playing Pink Floyd during intermission, and we saw Phil and Friends take to the stage and rose to our feet. Everybody was swaying, then suddenly the boyz leave the stage, and waited...for good reason, the entire crowd was singing along to WIsh You Were Here. And sure enough the boyz return for a second set that sent us soaring to the highest hights and then let us float gently back down, NEVER so many cresendos at a show - the harmonies were like butter, the BOMBS came up through my toes and shook my body like an earthquake, the guitar jams were sensational. Guess you could say I loved the show. Barry came out on Wolf for Not Fade Away, a fitting touch ~ Wish YOU were here!
Yes, YES! -the Garden of Eden was rockin, actually the entire show was rockin!! Thank you Phil, Thank you!
Fun time last night. Great to be back at Bimbo's.
Thoughts:
- Pretty hot in the venue. Toasty.
- Band took a little while to get going but I thought the 2nd set smoked. Phil was all smiles all night. Seemed to love playing with Nelson.
- This is my first experience with Sipe and that was the major difference. Not bad mind you, just different. Molo's signature thick & funky transitions replaced by a slightly more jazzy inspired playing in Sipe. It's interesting to hear after so many years with Molo.
I think they're set up to bring their A-game in Vegas.
Wow-what a setlist! Garden of Eden!! You lucky devils!
>> Pretty hot in the venue. Toasty.
Left a smoking crater in my mind! And Terrapin - out of no where. How could I forget?
It was only hot up front (my face literally melted off my head), but there were plently of places to cool off toward the back. Phil please play Bimbos again, and again.. a cresent moon occassion?
>No, Phil didn't play Pink Floyd, but they were playing Pink Floyd during intermission, and we saw Phil and Friends take to the stage and rose to our feet. Good stuff there Nancy! Sounds like you had a great time.
Pink Floyd Lyrics...I guess you and the crowd were intimating that you all wished "Jerry was here"? or am I just way off base!
that was quite a moment during wish you were here
what a fantastic show, Jeff Sipe was a suprising plus, Jimmy is amazing and David Nelson always a pleasure. very hot in the venue, the old hippies were passing out!
and the zoner crew truely are the kindest folks
that was quite the show! Made me forget about july! Looking forward to tomorrow night but now its time to travel!
My review from toobaord:
Great little venue that wasnt as oversold as it could have been. Dave Nelson sat in for the entire first set and 3 songs of the first. The band was extreamly tight considering theyve really only played together twice before. Phil as usuall was ON FIRE. Every note he played soothed my soul. I love it. The guy is briiliant. The first set was mostly song based with mostly Dave singing. The highlight was probablly an amazing "Dreadful Wind and Rain". They played a few DNB tunes I half recognized. The cosmic charlie to end the set was probablly the best verision Ive seen and jammed well.
The second set started strong but got seriously muscular when Nelson took a break and they launched into King Solomons Marbles (whch isnt on Philzone set list). Holy shit! Phenomaly played. Jimmy was playing as good as Ive seen him. He dug deep into his jazz roots and just played some amazing lines. I was seriously impressed. The drummer shredded too. The Other One continued the deep phsychedlia and was nearly as tight as some of the best PLQ ive seen as far as "turn on a dime" one-mind jamming goes. Nothing will ever touch Jerry Garica for me when it comes to my favorite music, but I cant deny the best full-band jamming Ive ever heard live is with Phil's bands. I know its not for everyone but I love it almost beyond discription. Well played music is still the most amazing thing Ive yet encountered in this life.
I am the Walrus (sung by rob) was fun and the Mountains on the Moon was haunting, beautiful and DEEPLY psychedelic music. He sounded like a warlock enchanting an ancient spell. And the spell worked. Not Fade away was predictably muscular and the Ripple encore was a perfect ending. No song is more successful at touching at whats really behind this crazy life.
>>>And Terrapin - out of no where.
Well it didn't really come out of nowhere. It was in the Shadows of the Moon! I thought that was a nice theme to set up for the start of the tour. Mountains of the Moon>Terrapin.
GDad has Wind Rain listed in the first set but the Zone setlist has Cold Rain and Snow in that place. I was pretty sober and don't recall Cold Rain and Snow, unlessthey completely reworked it. Of course I could be wrong. Did anyone else catch the Guitar Gently Weeps shredding solo that Jimmy did out of the Wheel?
They didn't play Cold Rain & Snow..it was "Oh The Wind and Rain." Nelson played it many times while a member of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band...and What about King Solomos's Marbles that they did in the second set..that's not listed either..I think that Nelson said "Now it get's good" after that hot version of "Any Naked Eye" they didn't play a tune by that name.
This was simply the strongest PLF show in many moons signaling good things moving forward. David Nelson played like his life depended on it and his tasteful Tele playing was, how shall I say this...elegant! Garden of Eden, the old NRPS chestnut, came out of nowhere and was over the top! Barry came on playing Wolf late in the second set and Jimmy Herring ripped all night. It was nice hearing Rob Barraco again and his harmonies, along with Nelson and Phil were nothing short of sensational. Comeback player of the night had to be Jeff Sipe who is finally finding his legs in PLF. Did I like the show? Fuck yes!
We need the soundboards of this show Phil. Like would NOW be too soon???
Bring it on Phil...How can it get any better than this? How do you say Las Vegas?
Co Co Cajoooo
>>>>>Did anyone else catch the Guitar Gently Weeps shredding solo that Jimmy did out of the Wheel?
Absolutely we were talking about it as it happened, waiting for the full bust out.
The crowd singing Wish you Were Here in unison and full throat was awesome. Phil standing behind his rig and watching/listening to us and digging it.
What a special night of music.
Oh and Wineo, thanks for the serious stokage. You did me and my crew righteously. My head is still cloudy.....
nice nancy!! love your review of the show! sounds like a blast~ you lucky bimbos!
HUGE HUGE FUN!!! Epic psychedelic twangfest. Zoners a-plenty: finally met Hall, Rev Buddy Green, Doogels, the lovely Peggy-o, plus folks I can't remember, surrounded by my good friends Redneck, Cinderoo, and Edgar. Brain too shaky to say more, so I'll just end bt saying serious shit went down and we all had a really good time!
"the Triple Headband Show...the rarely seen. Barraco/Sless/Nelson, each headband larger than the last, left to right. "
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Thanks for the reviews.
excellent words & reviews y'all...
getting goosebumps just thinking about it!
so so HAPPY to hear about this!!!
>> King Solomos's Marbles
I told GDad there was another song, just couldn't grasp the name. Not only was Phil digging the crowd singing Wish You Were Here, he was singing along, a super bonding moment.
>>>>>Did anyone else catch the Guitar Gently Weeps shredding solo that Jimmy did out of the Wheel?
>>Absolutely we were talking about it as it >>happened, waiting for the full bust out.
Would love to see this. Perhaps with Joan on vox, or even with Robinson on the SOTM tour.
Thanks for all of the reviews! Can someone please post an updated set list? I'm getting confused as to what was played and in what set, etc. . . Also, was Sless in the mix last night? What tunes had the pedal-steel treatment?
What a fantastic evening in so many ways. The phun began picking GDad up at Oakland airport, from there it was down the road to SF. First time meeting the Gman and he's a wild one, had to ask him to put his seatbelt on and keep it on! Next up was the revbudgreen, my sort of phriend for sure. Lunch on the wharf, a view of the line and popped in to Kennedy's. It was empty around 3:30 but that quickly changed. Back to the room for show prep at which time GDad asked to be left alone. I was worried he would miss the 1st set but he wasn't drinking so we let him be. The Rev and I quickly made out way back to Kennedy's where the party had begun. Emily, doogs, hal and angela, redneck, mylar and more just kept coming in. I left that party early to meet my friend Joe in line.
Now Joe and I were the lucky recipients of a kind zoner miracle, thanks again Mark. Having lots of time in line we chatted about shows we've been to this year. Lots of David Nelson, Joe turned me on to him a few years ago and it's been great getting to know his music. We chatted about seeing Phil shows last December and what a magical run that was. At that time I realized I have not seen Phil yet this year, had a chance at the RRE/Independent show but I wasn't feeling well and left at set break, Phil joined them 2nd set. So I was getting more excited to be going to this show, if that can be possible. Finally doors open and Joe and I find ourselves amongst the usual group of phriends near the stage. At that time I recognized Nelson's music stand and guitar. That stage sure was small and the guys were packed in as tight as the crowd, but the music stood out.
Show starts, you've seen the setlist, most of it accurate. How wonderful to have David Nelson featured for most of the night. He and Barry have great chemistry. David was all smiles from start to finish and Phil equally beaming. Was concerned I would miss John Molo but Jeff was really good, sometimes a background beat but every now and then quite the step up. Jimmy and Rob had a few moments together as well, nice considering they were on opposite ends of the stage with Phil, David, Barry and all their toys between them. I love watching Nelson play and the song choices are some of my favorite tunes. For one, Oh The Wind and Rain. What a story that song tells about 2 sisters and music. But my favorite has to be Garden of Eden. Ever since I heard that back at the Pepperspray 8 show I've been taken with it. I hope Phil bring's it out more often, with or without David.
So it was really hot in there last night. I thought it was just where I was standing (deep in the pit) but it was all over. I went walking throughout the night looking for air and the zoner phamily. Really tho I was looking for GDad. I never saw him until the end. Did he really make it into the venue? He did a good job recalling the setlist after. Between sets I caught up with the zoners in the lobby and we plotted out next outing. Soundboard on Sunday in the park. Can't wait for those New Year's eve shows. Thanks to Phil, phriends and zoners for another magical event.
There's so much I want to say. From Mylar showing up at my house just before 4:00 until he dropped me off around 1:30, I had the time of my life. Pregame at Kennedy's was awesome. Rev, you're going down next time, mister!!! <-foosball, not sex
Despite rumors that Bimbo's was oversold, it wasn't even close to oversold. There was TONS of room for everyone.
The band’s equipment was minimal, with Jimmy having one Fender guitar amp, Rob playing one keyboard (piano the entire show, I'm pretty sure), and drums with only two cymbals. I didn't see Barry's rig, but that was my first time to hear Wolf, and boy was that a treat. I didn't see Dave's rig, either, but I think he plays the most beautiful Telecaster I have ever seen. Phil's rig was large enough that he could hide behind it during Wish You Were Here. FUN!
I just love being *that* close to Phil's Modulus. What a classy bass...
I see why Phil likes Jeff. While Molo is sharp, and on top of the beat, Sipe lays back -- just like Billy.
I welcomed Rob back to the family by waving at him from the audience, and he winked & pointed at me. Cool guy, there. Rob Baracco adds SO MUCH to Phil's bands. The difference between Rob & no Rob is gaping. When he's there, he's smiling, he's nodding, he sings so well, and his fingers just dance over the keyboard like no one else. Welcome home, Rob. We've missed you.
Rob is one of us, and we are everywhere.
Would those wearing headbands please step to our left?
I enjoyed this show more than any Phil show since the Q. That's not an argument of which band is better, but this was perfect. I did a good job of avoiding the special guest rumors, so I was pleasantly surprised when I realized Dave was in charge of the vocals. Dave & Phil. Do you folks have any idea how perfect that is?
Jimmy Herring: Finger Lickin' Chicken Pickin' at its best.
I would do a roll call, but I'm telling you, everyone was there. Even Tore-up & 2DankDan, neither of whom had a ticket as of yesterday. As expected, everyone who wanted in got in.
All this, and I haven't even commented on the music. I suppose that should be a statement of how important our community is to me.
Ah, the music. GDTRFB was an interesting start. See ya, Ryan. "Oh, the wind and the rain" had us all singing along which was an indication of what was to come when the difference between performer and audience completely melted away during Wish You Were Here. I'm with Nancy -- that Terrapin came out of nowhere and it hit hard. I thought I heard a change into Walrus, and then I saw Jimmy reach up and play those opening notes, and then Rob took over. I've already gushed about Rob enough, and Walrus was a good reason why.
All in all, it was a night beyond all expectations. It could not have been better. Thank you, Phil, crowd, crew and club.
Oh, no one commented on this yet, but Nancy looked AWESOME in full makeup. Skull & roses.
NancyInTheSky
finally I get to see!
fitting
that was an awesome show! so glad i made it! thank you Phil for haveing David! David for now on!!! Please.
WOW......whottashow! The vibe was awesome, the sound INCREDIBLE, and the peeps were all in a row.
1st set opened with sweet jam that segued smoothly into GDTRFB. Prety hot-on-the-mark for first song. Sound was good to go right away as well.
But Cumberland/Wind'n'Rain/Box/CozmikCharlie was the highlight for me for that set and the whole show...the place just tore apart during this sequence, and the smiles were HIGH and WIDE! Get the tapes, the Cumberland SMOKED and the Cosmic Charlie RIPPED!!!!! Why couldn't the GD have played this in the 80's & 90's? Such a great song!
Second set was veryverygood too....especially the KSM (or was that Stronger than Dirt/Milkin' the Turkey?), I'm Dat Walrus, and Mtns of Moon is always a big fave for me! Wicked Messenger was a great opener for 2nd set, Wheel was nice...but Garden of Eden went WAY too long, almost 20 minutes of that loping tedious not too inspiring song, but luckily they redeemed themselves with the KSM and the following nuttiness.
A grand time was had by all...if only we could see shows like this in venues like this all the time - but then we'd be spoiled and wouldn't recognize the speshulness of nights like this!!!
I give this show 9.7 out of 10 YANGETYs!!!!!
>> or was that Stronger than Dirt/Milkin' the Turkey
yes!! that was what Harry called it, I don't know myself
Also should mention that WOLF sounded extraordinary....didn't notice it until I *heard* it, on a solo by Barry, and I said "DAMN that sounds like ol' Jer!". Look up, and there is da Wolfie!
Interesting to read all the Garden of Eden thoughts....I didn't really dig it. Most seem to have loved it. Oh well, diff strokes, but it certainly didn't affect my overall experience which was TOP NOTCH!!
Solid, solid show.
It brought back a similar feeling I had at another show on a 27th... 9-27-03. Though it was definately twangier with Nelson, Jimmy and Phil anchored the whole thing with their patented interplay... It was at times quite Quintesh-ish~
On a sappy note, I 'wish you [all] were here'... it was just one of those evenings, start to finish. The pregame spot across the street was perfect. When we got there, The Eleven (off Live Dead) was playing. I asked Emily 'who gave them this disk to play?' and she pointed at the Juke Box. Wow... my kind of place.
And as mentioned above, Bimbo's was not oversold so even though we left the pregame after the doors had opened we still had no problem getting a nice spot on the floor where there was plenty of room to move, even up towards the front.
The sound was good, and at one point Phil asked 'does it sound ok?'.. fans yelled 'yeah'.. Phil then said, as if he was thinking aloud, 'this place should get more and more gigs'. Hell yeah Phil, anytime!
Another great thing about this venue was right next to the floor was a side bar... made more than a few trips {Herradura shots} and got back to without missing anything. Special thanks to Mylar for buying everyone a round (as advertised) that was very cool of you man. And Wino, thanks for sharing your harvest.
As for the croud, no one seemed agro and for once I wasn't plagued by talkers. Everyone seemed like they were there for the show.
Some random memories...
Nelson with DNB seems to let Sless do a lot of guitar work, but last night David was on lead at times and he definately kicked it up a notch from anything I'd seen him do. And IMO, his voice/presence is perfectly suited for PL&F (Phil seemed really happy to have him there too).
The day of the show I woke up with Cumberland playing in my head, so for me it was the first set hightlight. It brought the crowd to a frenzy, and Barry's pedal-steel lead mid-song was just blistering .
At setbreak Buncombe called it a perfect set... I couldn't disagree, but I also knew the second set would be kicked up a notch, and man was it ever!
Early on I thought I heard a Terrapin tease (can't remember which song), so it was in the back of my mind through the mind numbing stuff to follow. King Solomon's Marbles is always a favorite of mine and Jimmy was slinging it SO hard.
I really dug Rob on the Walrus. In fact, he was solid on keys all night. I hope he remains a permenant fixture.
The Other One did miss Bobby, but what Phil missed on vocals, he more than made up for with {{{BOMBS}}}.
Mountains of the Moon was a nice slow down of pace... it seemed to lull us into a dream state so when Phil sang "INSPIRATION" it was absolutely amazing. Damn I love that song, and as someone else wrote, it was an epic version.
The jamming on NFA was a perfect peak to end the show on... Barry was heard loud and clear. I thought it was his best (non-pedal) jamming of the night... {{{{WOLF}}}}
Ripple was a smooooth landing... capping what was practically a perfect night.
NYE run can't get here fast enough!
Pure jealousy raging in Denver today, as reports roll in... Can only hope that Phil brings a solid band back to Denver when he's ready. I'm guessing February. Ecstatic that Phil HAS a band, and Phriends, to do the requisite 180-degree turn from July. And that righteous Nancy! Grrrr...
>>I guess you and the crowd were intimating that you all wished "Jerry was here"? or am I just way off base!
Kenny, I don't know! Personally, I was just groovin to the great sound system playing the recorded music and great friends - when the band left the stage, I was thinking: I wish Phil and Friends were here, I was ready for more! I'm beyond wishing that Jerry was here and just happy that he's left such a legacy - with his music that continues to INSPRIRE. My comments above were more to mean that I wish YOU (my zoners friends who didn't make it) were there. Epic is a big word to throw out, but the playing last night was worthy!
*blush* thanks for the compliment on the costume ~
You'd think being a Deadhead of 20+ years I'd know the answer, but what's the difference between King Soloman's Marbles and Stronger Than Dirt?
The GAMH 1975 show labels the jam Stronger Than Dirt. That's what they played last night @ Bimbo's, right? But there's examples of the same jam called King Soloman's Marbles performed by P&F.
Are they the same jam? Different? And which of the two was played last night?
Thanks,
Anth
I thought it was Stronger Than Dirt.
Had a great time last night. It was especially wonderful being with all you Zoners at Kennedy's and at Bimbo's. Definetly people I'd hang out with anytime, anywhere.
The show was everything I expected and more. Bimbo's reminded me a lot of seeing Jerry at the Stone or Keystones. Nice and intimate. Good sound.
Great music. Really great music. This arrangement is as hot as anything I've ever seen and heard. I'd like to see this again for sure.
Got home in the wee hours and had to come into work earlier than expected, to trouble shoot, but I'm going to drag my tired self to my local cafe in Galt and play some music tonight. I think I might pull out Fennerio and a couple others inspired by last night's memorable show.
Hope to see you all again soon.
I'm so happy for those that were there. I can't wait to groove with you all this December!
Solid Show !!!!! Bimbos was a great venue & the staff there was FRIENDLY. A very spiffy place.
Nelson rocked !!!!! I would love to see Phil invite Nelson back for the New Years show. He added some real tasteful stuff to the mix.
Great review doogles. Your efforts did not go unnoticed by this head.
I welcomed Rob back to the family by waving at him from the audience, and he winked & pointed at me. Cool guy, there. Rob Baracco adds SO MUCH to Phil's bands. Your review is so on the money and I have not heard the show.
Nancy you looked incredible. And thanks for your reply. I think I was way off base with the jerry connotation the Phil family was just loving life and having fun.
Tore Up and hallucinations...well written.
I can see that this band had impressed all. Not one bad review here and that has not occured for...well.....4 ever or what seems like it.
This band is not here to mess around. Vegoose is gonna be a ball.
YOU ZONERS FUCKING ROCK. YOU MAKE ME MISS "BEING AWAY" MORE THAN NEW YORK PIZZA.
G.dad.......am waiting for ya dude.
>>> I would love to see Phil invite Nelson back for the New Years show
Agreed. Reading these reviews has really wet the old whistle for some PHIL!!
Sounds like David Nelson was a great addition to the band.
Love the set list!
Very early 70's acid-cowboy classic GD being played.
I too am hoping David Nelson will pop up at NYE!
We've been lucky enough to have him in Denver a few times and he is a great performer and truly a kindered spirit to Jerry and the boys.
Looking foward to reading some vegas reviews- keep 'em coming!
Actually, upon further review by the officials (wouldn't it be great to see the NFL zebras dressed in dyes? :-)
..the song is:
King Solomon's Marbles
Pt.1 Stronger Than Dirt (1:55)
Pt.2 Milkin' The Turkey (3:25)
But it is all one track on BFA, and was played as such last night.
Whottevahitiz....IT SHMOKED!!!
>> G.dad.......am waiting for ya dude.
He's still belted in.
Absolutely on the Nelson for NYE, was thinking, hoping the same today. He was so animated, as all Nelson fans know him to be. What was that comment about those guys making some hellatious music? You rock David! And those bombs from Phil during The Other One sure did more than make up for missing 'the other one'. Being so close I had my eyes on everyone's fret work. My what great hands they all have.
The THBS (Triple HeadBand Show) was awesome. Nelson added some nice and gentle touches with a real roar... Once a verse was over, the song was turned upside down and just drained for everything it was worth! Phil was ALL SMILES ALL NIGHT!
Certianly some heavy shit was laid down last night. I did run into a few who did not understand the Nelson addition, but by the end of the show, I think they tasted a little jelly... Probably scracthing their heads today and trying to piece it all together!
Overall, GREAT VIBES everywhere, beautiful show and this pup is truly a keeper. The discs will fare thee well on a Sunday morning or Saturday night...
Dealers choice; Being they covered the entire sphere of old-time>modern music and then some! If Woody Guthrie morphed into Miles Davis and morphed back to Dylan morphing into P&F... That's what we saw. Amazing, not life-changing... Just amazing!
Have PHUN in Vegas Phriends! It's gonna get just a little SICK!
Peace,
Hlpslpfrnk
Cumberland, Wind & Rain were 1st set highlights, with a brief jack-a-roe jam, maybe even a know you rider/china doll tease.
The back lounge had speakers on all night if you needed to take a break and hang by the fire. Plenty of room, but most folks stopped short at the main bar.
Jimmy was off the hook 2nd set - somewhere a watchtower/73 style jam came out of nowhere, maybe sometime around the O1. Pretty epic.
Unfortunately my car is missing. I'm assuming the honda bandits cherry picked it. Try telling that to your wife - and the cops - at 1:30 in the am. after a phil show.
Triple Headband (^ excellent^)
The question is.....are we less fortunate gonna be able to hear this dang show???????
I sure hope so...WOW!
Excellent show...loved the jamming....jimmy & rob knocked my socks off! love jimmy mang!

great seeing gdaddy and the rev
great nite, great music, stupendious...more bimbos PLEASE and the soundboard......papa phil ;-)
Yep, great stuff. Not a low moment, all night.
Reviews pretty much covered it, but I wanted to mention a couple of classic Phil facial expressions during the Ripple encore. At the end of the second verse, David Nelson takes it into a guitar solo, rather than the chorus -- prompting a huge grin and eyebrows raised to the top of Phil's head as he looked over at Jimmy and the band fell into sync. Then at the end of one verse of instrumental, Nelson launches into the chorus, at which point Phil closes his eyes and drops the corners of his mouth in a hilarious yeah we planned it this way expression...
This show was definately EPIC.. Great stuff all throught the night!!!EssEphReek..Yeah I caught those looks to right from the rail in front of Phil! "PRICELESS"....oh yeah It WAS planned that way! Everyone was in great spirits.BIMBOS could not have been any better. That was at least something special!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Phil and Friends.
Keep on keepin on
Interesting to see Phil conducting the band via their ear pieces, haven't been so close to the stage in a while, but he seemed to be talking to them quite a bit, and his friends followed his cues perfectly. don't think I ever saw Phil quite as happy on stage. I'd like to take this ride just one more time, bring these friends back to Bimbos Phil, please!
Nothing left to do but SMILE SMILE SMILE. What to say that hasn't already been said. Any Naked Eye and Garden of Eden SMOKED.
Thank You Phil, Friends and Bimbos for a real good time!!!!
Aloha, Zoners. Been a while since I posted, but I've gotta lotta love 2 give.
My kindest thanks to Em, Rory and especially Rich for making Bimbo's happen!!! For those who were there, it was truly a special scene. The band clearly felt it throughout the night, as so many of you noted in your posts. A small SF show was no doubt a much needed calm before the inevitable torrent that is Las Vegas.
And I was soooooo glad to be there for it!!! The lineup had a really organic feel (particularly the addition of Nelson), more so than I can recall for any other P&F rotation. The country/bluegrass groove is what shone through as the mood for the evening. Might have been the fact that it was a small venue with room to move and a mellow crowd.
The setlist reflects the sound to a T. I'm sucker for the sort of oldtime Jerry crooners like The Wind and Rain and Peggy-O...we had plenty of those, perfectly placed, perfectly played. THE CUMBERLAND F#^%ING RIPPED!!!! Herring seriously warmed the place the up during Cumberland, King Solomon's and Cosmic Charlie (another favorite). We knew Mtns of the Moon was building to something explosive, and sure enough, Terrapin tore the roof off. NFA was a necessary closer - needed to return to Earth after Terrapin sprung us loose.
I love that the band encored with Ripple...it just made sense with the lineup, the crowd and the vibe for the whole evening. Simple, pure, concise. "Let there be songs to fill the air."
I wish all of you lots of love and luck on your voyage to Vegas - May the force be with you in the Land of the Lost. Thanks again to everyone for making Bimbo's a beautiful scene!
NFA,
Dan

Great F&^$ing show!!! Thanks Canyon!!!
All I could think about at this show was how much it reminded me of back in the day when Jerry use to play at the Stone...

This band kicks ass !!
Soundboard Release Please !!!!!!
great pics sue...any naked eye mountains of the moon and garden of eden where my favs fo sure!
I hope Phil makes this a regular stop from now on!!!!!!!!
Yes, I can't think of a better place for Phil to play in the future. I'm almost ashamed to say that I've lived in SF for 16 years, and that was my first time at Bimbo's (what can I say, I'm not a big Tainted Love or Super Diamond fan). The place was sooo enjoyable - the sound was fantastic (Phil's bass just shook me), and the intimacy of seeing the band in such a small venue was incredible! David Nelson is a musical gem - it was such a joy to hear Phil performing a bunch of his material. This lineup was incredible. The 'Garden of Eden,' 'King Solomon's Marbles,' 'Other One' and 'Mountains' were highlights for me (shit, the whole second set was incredible).
I'm getting the feeling that this show will definitely be a soundboard release. Seemed there was some professional recording equipment set up near the stage. Hell, maybe they could even produce a DVD of this show (I can dream, can't I?).
Phil - you amaze me even more every time I see you. 65 and still kickin' my ass!! Rock and Roll can never die!!
i wish Phil would play
the
Rancho Nicasio
and David Nelson for that matter

Shameless Cross Posting here from DNB thread..

Check out the Bimbo's setlist tab on homepage..
Good pics of David..
Story # 342..in the ongoing "Notes From the Jerry Pit..Vegas or Bust" series..
Set 1..Transitioning-jamming out of Friend Of The Devil..going into next tune..David I guess thinking it lingering and a bit "lazy.."
Gets Phil's attention waving neck of his guitar..
Motions to Phil to pick up the pace..Phil nods his head in agreement and off they go into a rockin Cumberland..
David does we must never forget..have seniority rights over just about everybody when it comes to the bluegrassy GD tunes..
He did a lot of talking to crowd and band on stage at Bimbo's
He referred to Phil several times as "The Kid"..
Ha..
Gr8ful Dad, That rendition of Cumberland was amazing...I could not believe the feeling inside Bimbos...it brought me back in time to when you could drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and check out a late show at The Stone with the JGB, and it was so fucking casual like your local band that came down from Marin for the night to play some tunes for some friends in a cool bar in the city..only in San Francisco! WHAT A SPECIAL NIGHT TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF! I dunno...that was the mood for me and it was well worth coming 1200 miles for!
Yes Sage Girl..you were - are correct..You so much wanted to get hooked up w/ ticket up for that show..
The way it played out..line up mystery guest..Philzone Contest..tickets becoming available Zoners Hookin up Zoners..the day of show..
The cool pre show gathering at Kennedy's..
The venue..The show itself..Great vibe from musicians fans staff and security..
Hope end of year run plays out like Vegas or Bust did..
If I actually make them shows it will be my first ever NYE concert..
Hi, I'm new here. I signed up so I could say that this show (Bimbo's) was one of the two or three best Phil shows I've heard since he started playing regularly again in 1997. David Nelson was the perfect addition to the band and everybody played with great intensity and focus. I think the small stage and close audience made all the difference. The groove at the opening of the second set alone was worth the price of admission. Phil was energetic the whole night (in fact he was energetic for the whole weekend all the way 'til about 5:15 am Monday morning in Las Vegas). With the exception of a rare fight -- unimaginable at this show at this venue -- the audience was equally energetic and focused.
I think it was a little like the old days when most of the audience was tripping! I wasn't tripping Thursday night, but that's what the energy felt like. The venue was classy but laid back (with generous bartenders I might add). The whole evening was awesome! What a prelude to Vegoose!
Even though they didn't allow taping, I did see one person taping. However, this show was so great, it needs to be mastered and released for all to hear. After all, many people were shut out of this show. It seems only fair to make it available to the masses. I'd rush to buy it!
Great show, one of my all time favorite Phil shows. Thought Joan would be there, but Jim Maddux told me out front he had been talking to David nelson, and that is who played with Phil, a great choice. I really love david's band. Any way great vibe in Bimbo's tonight. Very hot and seemed oversold, but the sound was amazing, incredible PA! Great song selection and I think it was Jimmy's best performance I have ever seen, really chose each note wisely. Jeff Sipe was a change from Molo, but he sounds great on recording I have of the show. Hour break, and great second set. Cumberland in the first was a highlight for me, country feel like Mardi Gras 2005. I am the Walrus was also very special, good to have Rob back. Mountains of the Moon was very trippy, and Phil looks great, he is the keeper of the flame in my eyes. Wicked Messenger was killer, and things really got gonig during Other One. Thank God for Phil Lesh and organ donors. See you all at New Years, love Bruce weber(eddieboy)!!!!!!!!!
I was so bummed I couldn't make this one. I was totally broke the day of online ticket sales, and again the week of the show. On top of that we had band practice the night of the show. I actually left practice a little early (much to the chagrin of my bandmates) to go earhustle outside the stage door (the sound was amazing even on the street!!!). I caught a little of the Wheel>Garden of Eden>King Solomon's Marbles then went and drowned my sorrows a little across the street at the International. I did play some guitar under the awning (just out of the rain) across the street as the show was letting out, but it was a small consolation to having missed such an excellent show. Phil you must come and play Bimbo's again. It is, after all, right across the street from my local watering hole. I'll spot you a game of pool!
*BEST* show of the 3 in October...bring out Nelson for the New Year's shows!!!!
triple head bands do rock!
