My fiancee got us floor TIX for this special ENGAGEMENT show!! I'll report back....very few Zoners making it, eh??? James/FishWater--you gonna be there??
great to see warren playin' in the band..... really nice if he sings some jerry songs like he does with PLQ - think he'll join the band if they want him?
either way - have a good show and it's good the see them reclaim their name..
"LONG LIVE THE DEAD!!!"
I had three firsts at the Warfield, 1st show, 1st time at the Warfield, 1st dose. MAN! What a night! The Warfield is also the last place I ever saw Jerry, in the '90's. Need less to say, I love the Warfield. Now it will be my first "The Dead" show. I'm aslo going to suprise my girlfriend with her very fist show on Valentines.
By the way, the Unbroken Chain Foundation is auctioning tickets on E-bay.
---{-{@WISHING YOU A MIRACLE ON VALENTINES@}-}--
They have the same skeletons mounted on the marquee that they had during the 80's dead @ the warfield shows...where do they store this stuff??
Update so far:
jam > bucket > Iko Lazy Lightning > Supp Loose lucy (with SH) Hard to Handle (with Warren and Joan) Casey Jones (with WH, JO, SH) > Cumberland (with WH & JO)
I remember Valentine's Day '88 at the Kaiser, listening to a eastern tinged psychedelic set and Valentine's '95 at the Fillmore with Ratdog(?) and the Jefferson Starship/Airplane where they played a great rendition of "Take Me To The River."
The new album, if they have one, let's hope its a great protoplasm of love, honesty and natural shit!
With the name change, even punkers will be buying it... and that is good...
"Never Give Your Love My Friend," onto a wussy heart--
Phil's album is great car driving music and I love it for what it is; it would be homage to a sterile Shoreline past though (if "The Dead" put out such a thing).
somebody dosed sammy hagar..he was dancin and slithering around in leather pants..michael kang of string cheese also sat in on violin

what about "love supreme"???
Interesting show last night. First, the scene was an A+ - great crowd all reved up in a Valentines Day mood. The Warfield marque simply read "The Dead" and was accompanied by (what appeared to be) the huge skeletons/roses cutout which hung outside the Warfield and Radio City back in the day. Lots of people looking for tickets.
The show was quite different from the Other One's fall tour due to the rotating guests. The Sammy appearance in Luce Lucy was a blast - he belted it big and bluesy. Joan Osborne I felt was fantastic, she was dancing in front of the stage speaker monitors, on top of Billy/Mikey's drumkit, and overall adding a ton of energy. The end of the first set seemed to lose a bit of steam however, Cumberland and Sugaree felt way flat. Michael Kang although an excellent musician didn't add much tonight - there were too many cooks at certain points.
Set II took off from Help through NFA. HEAVY extended jamming with Warren, Jimmy, Kang and Weir belting out a battering of guitar mashing. The setlist may look a tad standard but each song was pushed to exhaustion. Everything was fully jammed out, loud and raunchy. Sittin on Top of the World and Love Supreme were also intense.
The band appeared in very high spirits with everybody having a great time. In Row F of the Balcony the sound was clear and really loud - my perfect combination.
Wow -- MAN -- what a good show! *whew.*
Guess we'll hafta wait for the tapes to really know how much of "Can't Always Get" and "Love Supreme" they actually did, as the several versions of lists posted are inconsistent.
I wouldn't count "Can't Always Get" if it is the same riff of it Jimmy ALWAYS does during Sugaree, and the original Coltrane "A Love Supreme" is an entire album side with chanting vocals and all - was this a full version or just a "tease" in a jam?
Also, how harshly did the BGP "Bluecoats" treat the tapers? Were they way back in the corner way under the balcony as usual at the Warfield, with the BGP tape-buster guy out in the crowd catching the up front stealthers?
Also, thought it was kinda interesting (and cool actually) that they didn't do Drums/Space, in fact, judging from the pictures, the drummers had no extra stuff set up at all besides their normal drum kits.
Glad all met up and had a great great time. the warfield .....there's just something about that name. How was the "party favor" scene? visibily inside was how many feet ? LOL
Sounds like a standard Dead setlist. No "Two Djin", "No More Do I" . I am glad so much fun was had. 7/2/88 playin now
Party favors were readily available, no complaints, the whole hard core wookie crew was in attendence, I even scored a few scraps of paper for future reference, and it wasn't as crowded as sometimes I've seen in the past. Room to dance
I must say that was a wonderful show, full of ((((energy)))))&((((love))))
The day for me started out pretty weird, I wasnt planning on going to the show (no ticket..lol) and was happy enough to see Phil and Donate some blood. I went over the blood drive around 12:00 and met up with Peggy-O and Schnee, it was great to talk to them and look at Phil sitting down in the background. I went over talked to Phil, got a picture, he signed a PLQ poster, and I gave him a letter I wrote to him. He was looking really bright and happy, what a spirit, I left him by saying that "his sounds is the cosmic breath." He got a good chuckle out of that. Then I went and gave blood, I recommend everyone to do this at least once!! (if can will recieve it, you should give it) but be sure to eat a hearty meal before hand, I nearly passed out while giving blood because I was so dehydrated. That made me feel weird all day long.
Later that day I went off to the Warfield (just 5 blocks from my house)to say Hi to everyone and hang with some friends going to the show. I was real bummeed because I couldnt get in and the show was practially in my backyard, so I tried to keep a positive attitude and just hang out. Lol, Im never thought I'd be one of those people going to the show without a ticket..yuck!! Around 6:00 I met up with fellow Zoner Friend Butmas Manche, and as fate would have it, his roomates friend couldnt make it and they had an extra for me. I found out I could get a ticket right was the doors were opening and I was flabbergasted. It didnt hit me that I made it in until Hunter came on.
And on to the show!
The energy was very high for this benefit show, in classic warfield fashion. The ushers were handing out donor cards sighned by Phil and beautiful red roses for everyone to have. The crowd was very friendly and enjoyable. I settled in on the lower floor on Jimmy's side. Robert Hunter came on right about 8:00 looking like the poet warrior he is. He was full of life and I honestly never heard him play or sing better. He opened with Standing on the Moon and also played Mission, Cats, Ripple... I never heard such a strong applauds and roars from the crowd during a hunter set, everyone was into it. Unfortuanatly for me, I wasnt feeling to good, mainly from not eating to much after giving blood and being in a hectic environment, I got dizzy and had to sit down for a bit. No problem though, I felt much better and enjoyed Hunter very much so. He played for about 45-50 minutes. Then we had a short setbreak, and THE DEAD came on around 9:15. The band memebers looked great, Bobby in shorts, Mickey as a member of the FBI, Jimmy in plaid, Phil the living energy..etc..Oddly enough Barraco didnt come out for the first few songs, I was wondering where he was?? There was a really phychedelic screen giong on in the background, wahoo! The band started off with a nice short jam that went right into a raging hell in a bucket. Very nice!! One of the best versions I have ever heard, It soared and rocked the place good. Its great to hear Phil playing these songs again and Jimmy's lighting lead go all over the melody. Jimmy rocks!!! He was definatly in control. Bucket ended? Next came Aiko with mickey singing, not my favorite song but its kind of a a dead anthem and everyone felt it. Its a rocker, a get down and boogie kind of song. ((((Shake Yur Bones))))) After that Lazy Lighting>Supplication, not bad, but not really great either, defiantly not as good as 12/6/02. There were some flubs and loss of organization, but I am happy enough to hear these songs being played. The jam at the end of Supplication was really nice, tapping into the jams. Then barraco came onto the stage....wahoo! it was real nice to see him, and who else comes up but Sammy hagar to the mic, no guitar, just his radical and twirling arms going all over the place. I think he was more into it than anybody in the whole place. Dancin all over the stage, clapping hands and smilin. Though it was funny to see him, he got mixed reactions from the crowd. (a lot of the people didnt want guests at the show, they were to into having just a "dead" show, oh well its a benefit damnit!) I was happy enough to see him funking on stage. Loose Lucy was played really well and Sammy sang just fine, adding in those cliche 80's vocal licks. When that was done, Sammy left and we wouldnt see him again that night, then Joan Osborne and WARREN!!! came up. Shit, It was sooooo gooooood toooo seeeee Warrrrreeeeen uppp therrreeee, right nect to Jimmmmmy! You could kinda tell the two of them were in their own world with eachother because Jimmy had his back to the others and was playing right at Warren. Hard 2 handle raged!! Fuckin awesome. Joan and wareen were trading off vocals. Even though I dont dig Joans singing that much (suasan all the way) she did a great job and was a sassy cat on stage. During the Jams she would walk around the stage dancing and throwing rose petals on the crownd and the band. Then warren left the stage and joan stayed up and they played Casey Jones. Well this was the low point for me, it really was, I dont know why, but I think it really sucked. Nuff said. Then Joan left and Micheal Kang came up!! man do I love this guy!! He came on stage carrying his beautiful violin and he got down with the boys on a huge cumberland, even taking the bridge verses. Right on, it was great to see some hard fiddlin in Cumberland. It was a Huge version, HUGE! Then warren came back on and Micheal left and they jammed for a bit and went into one of the best post 77' sugarrees I have ever heard. So much energy and power packed right in, whoooOOOooooOOOooOOoOaaa!! I was in bliss, pure musical heaven. The 1st set ended around 10:40.
40min setbreak?? Shit that was long. But it was Valentines Day, so its ok.
2nd set baby!!
The Dead opened up with a killer jam!! A Love Supreme, with Jimmy taking the lead and going balls out nuts. Phil even added in the vocals "a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme" YES!!!! This went into LLRain. Not bad, I just dont really dig this one anymore without Jerry. And I must say I am not a fan of bobbys vocals anymore. Uhhhhhh, bring sammy back...lol. Sittin on Top of the World brought back Micheal Kang with his 5 string mandolin and he tore it up with Jimmy and took a verse. Rob did a great job singing this one. It started out really slow and then worked into a fiery frenzy. Then Mike left and Warren came back, it was getting spacey, then LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS, ohhh the power, it was unbearable!! A fantasic version, so uplifting, unfortuanly the end jam just kind of dissovled and broke up. Warren left and they started Jamming nice and spacey intense like. Then Bamb!! Born Cross-Eyed!!!!!! welcome to San Francisco, the 60's are back. Phil took total control and led the band into one of the cooolest musical moments I have ever seen live. Bobbys vocals were great for this one and having Rob and Phil back him up....oh baby!!! it was way to good!!!! probably the highlight for me. Then right into Help on the way (why does bobby sing this??) a pretty good version, nice jimmy solo, then the slipknot break, very tight!!!! now they jam, and warren comes back, and then Micheal kang on fiddle, whoa whats going on?? the jams begin to melt and fizzle right into space.....oh my...space.........with all of the on stage trippin out. Warren sliding, and Micheal funking his tunnings. ((((((((Cosmic)))))))))))
Then came Lovelight back with Joan, a fucking phenomenal version that lasted forever, it was like 20-30 mintures long and hard to describe, you'll have to hear this one. >>>right into a short slipknot>>>>Franklins Tower. Frank was pretty good with, but something was lacking, ummmm Im just used to the energy of PLQ. Frank was ummm ok. The show ended with a ton of enery though. Give it up to the people!!!!
The crowd was going nutss!!
Encore with a gentle and misguided GDTRFB, noboby knew what they were doing, it kindof fizzled and then they wre doing a vocal jam, then back into it raging. Warren really saved this one. Bid you Goodnight Jam was sweet, then then right in to a thunderous NFA, bring on the Dead, its valentines day, OUR LOVE WILL NOT FADE AWAY....................
Nice review Lord Henry!!
Can't add much more, but to say it certainly had some fantastic segments, a few awkward moments, and some really interesting interplay between all the guests. I actually thought Joan Osbourne was pretty good - they should have let her sing a bit more on the bluesy numbers - Warren kind of took over, but, hey...that's kind of expected. I haven't really seen Phil or TOO (The Dead, whatever) give a guest female vocalist enough time to really shine. She's pretty good, and she certainly was a nice addition to the stage. Sammy was not bad, but what was up with the Red Rocker's big pink Crate amplifier - was he going to play, and they just decided forget it? - probably for the best, but it would've been kind of cool. Kang was awesome, and Warren was damned good as usual (though, I must admit, I'm much more of a Herring fan).
And, yes, Born Cross-Eyed was definitely my highlight, having not seen this one yet ("Feelin' groovy, Lookin' fine!!"). Also, the Lazy->Supplication jam in the first set was magical - kind of got completely lost in that one (was it the chocolato I had?!).
Oh, and seriously, can Bobby just sing a song normally anymore? Does everything have to be screamed 5 or 6 times with his bluesman scratchy voice, and extra jams between all the lines. It was nice when Phil finally took charge of the vocals at the end of Franklin's, after Bobby kind of made a mockery of it - it was amusing though, and we were thinking how Jerry would've laughed at it.
Still, a magical evening for all, and some nice freebie posters on the way out.
A final thought: they should've renamed themselves "The Other Dead."
How about "The Rest of the Dead, and Phriends"
What time did the show end?
show ended 1:20am...but hunter came on @ 9pm....i cant remember what time the dead played..also as you came in you got a rose and an organ donor card personally signed by phil...and a cool poster when it was over
Howdy folks; First post here or any where for that matter. The lesson I learned last night is never go in to a show with any expectations at all. Now I learned that lesson on 3/24/73 for the first time. and many times since that time right up until yesterday again. I thought in my simple mind that the first time playing as THE DEAD,they might accually try to do so. Last night they played great and unbelievebly bad. but the one thing they were not is THE DEAD. For me the only true highlites were Sammy rocking out the whole band and crowd w/ loose lucy and a great post jerry looks like rain. Most of the rest was "to many cooks" if you know what I mean. Louder Faster Harder does not = better. Just an old guy and an opinonated one at that.
Very nice people!
Thank you all.......
David, welcome bro and continue . I wasn't there. your comments concerning the "too many cooks" is fine with me as that has been a critique of mine for many years that "super jams" are lousey cause their is too much 'noise & egos'. fine example is that encore super jam from what is it.....????? 2/02/70? too many at once and gregg allman didn't give a good lovelight vocal.
will have to hold off judgement though on 2/14/03 till i actually hear it. i thought this past new years was very good.
It was Grate! to be at the Warfield with all of you and "The Band" once again.
So I was at the show. It was not as good as new years but it was a great show.
It started off great with Hell in a Bucket and Aiko. Felt like the good ole' dead to me. But then when the special guests started playing it kind of broke up the flow if the rest of the set. There where some good moments though. Unlike a previous reviewr I actually liked Casey Jones. The sugaree set closer had good energy.
The second set opened with an OK love supreme. I didn't know what song it was until Phil sang the small vocal part. Looks like rain was surprisingly powerful and tight. Sittin on top of the world was fun and was a great jam once it picked up speed. LSD and Born crosside where trippy and dripping. These where followed by a help/slip. The slipknot jam was pretty smokin. At this point I realised that there would be no drums solo.
The rest of the set was pretty high energy and fun but the special guests made it not as tight as it could have been. I am not a big fan of how bobby is breaking up the lyrics with spaces of music. Its just kind of lame. But bob weirdo is well...a werido. Always has been.
Also unlike the previous reviewer I thought the encores where smokin. The highlight of the evening for me. The GDTRFB was FULL of energy and NFA felt like old times.
Let me wrap up by saying this: What made the GD great was the mystcial energy they produced when they played. It was life affiming and healing. It spoke directly to the human spirit. I have never heard *it* in any other band and thought it was gone when jerry died. I am happy to report that with the current lineup *it* is back. Maybe not as clear and powerful as before, but it is there. For those of us who understand how to experience this enegery, we should all rejoice that we get to experience it again.
Great reviews folks! Thanks for the info. on "Love Supreme" - that musta been wild! Cumby & Sittin on Top w/fiddle, plus the first West Coast Born X-Eyed. And Slipknot - space - Lovelite. Should be an interesting summer!
THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR REVIEWS,IT MAKES BEING IN S.FLA,WITH MY MIND,AND SPIRIT SITTING ACROSS THE WORLD, COME TO LIGHT.THE REAL CELEBRATION,IN MY OPINION,IS THE FACT THEY RENAMED THEM SELVES THE DEAD,A MAJOR MOVE TO OUR MUSICAL FUTURE.A TRUE COMMITMENT FROM THE BAND.THE SETS,THE MUSIC IS ALL COOL,ALWAYS WAS,ALWAYS WILL BE.THE DEAD ARE BACK.AND WILL NEVER FADE AWAY,WHILE WE LIVE,WHILE WE LIVE...PEACE
I don't meen to cast any negitive vibes or anything like that. The band I saw on NYE and the band I saw on valentines day were miles apart. On 4/2/02 during the donor wrap Phil said something like " well we got this building off the ground a few times tonight" They did that on NYE, they also did it at the spectrum on 11/24/02 and Alpine, but not so often besides those few shows, but all of this is just my experiences. I know they can't get it off the ground every night, but to get me to spend more of my hard earned again the need to do it more. I will give up my spot on the floor to someone who will enjoy it more than me. I hate to say it, I'll wait for PLQ. Never thought I would say that, but right now thats how I feel.. PEACE
Hey...it's not negative. I know what you mean. Valentine's had such a different feel...nothing like any TOO or anything else I'd seen. It's like they conciously chose to make it different, since they're a "new" band. Forget about setlists, etc... this was not like anything anyone has seen yet, if you weren't there. I really miss PLQ even more now, and the best jamming of 2/14 was when Warren was onstage (well, Kang did some nice stuff too during Cumberland & Sittin'...). Mickey looked like he should'a been organizing a Nancy Pelosi fundraiser because he was totally off most of the night--maybe it was the FBI shirt, he changed it at setbreak--he was even fooling around w/ a gasmask at one point. Billy was ripping the drums tho'..., but (sorry B&M) I miss Molo--he's amazing, and like no drummer I've seen. Of interest to Zoners, there was almost no Phil singing all night, except a Franklin's verse & the couple "Love Supreme" chants. I wonder if "The Dead" will go back to less & less Phil songs?? WE WANT PHIL! WE WANT PHIL! WE WANT PHIL!
On the flip side, the family vibe was great & the Warfield shined as always. "The Dead" set began w/ Bobby's daughter in costume hanging out on stage for a few minutes, lapping in the feeling of a theater full of folks cheering for her. The buckets of roses & other decorations, and Phil's signed donor cards were very special. The crowd was in high spirits as you'd expect.
"know they can't get it off the ground every night, but to get me to spend more of my hard earned again the need to do it more. "
I think maybe with the exception Spring and Summer 1990, the dead have always been hit or miss. And valintines was certainly not a crappy show. It just wasnt the power house that NYE was.
It not something they have control over. The enegery is just there or it isnt.
All I want is for them to:
1) TAKE CHANCES
2) JAM
Do those 2 things and I'm a happy camper! I don't really even care what songs they play, even tho I'll always tend to want/not want certain things . . .
As long as they play Picaso Moon and Way to go Home then I am happy!
Who is Joan Osbourne?
Who is Joan Osbourne?
She had a hit record a few years back and hasn't really produced much of anything since. She's blues based but also sings pop-like songs. I think she fancies herself a neo-Janis Joplin. The album is very good however. It's worth getting if you can find it cheap.
Joan had a big hit 7 or 8 years ago, "One of Us," ("what if God is one of us..."), after she put together a band out of the remnants of The Hooters out of Philly (a 3-hit wonder band). She's from Kentucky but came up in the NYC club scene after she dropped out of art school, hanging with Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors before any of them made it.
I think she was nominated for a Grammy for her first album, "Relish," but hasn't gotten much exposure since. There are a couple Joan freaks on the board, me and Heckley among them. I've seen her open for Ratdog at Laguna Seca, headline at the Warfield, open for Joan Baez and the Indigo Girls at a Jazz Fest evening show, and open for Blues Traveler at the Greek Theater, as well as sit in with a variety of people.
She has some serious pipes and a very unabashed sexuality. Check out Relish, there are some great tracks on that album.
Yes, Relish. Nice version of Dylan's "Man In The Long Black Coat".
No if's and's or but's. I am a Joan freak. I've seen her probably thirty times, most recently a couple of months ago, at a surprise show at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. She tore the roof off the old bowling alley.
I only wish they would have let her step out a bit more on Friday. Warren was much louder in the mix. Now dont get me wrong, Warren's cool when it comes to soulful vocals, but he can't hold a candle to Joan

I finally got passed the sign up procedure. So I will now make my first post. I have been going to dead shows since I was 12 years old: I will be 33 next month. Since Jerry died it has been a tough road for all of us. Those first few years of the Further festivals were so depressing. But then Phil took off over the last two years with PLQ and the music became magic again. I whent to Alpine and Indianapolis for the TOO shows, and was a little dissapointed. Yes it was great to enjoy the music with 40,000 fans again, but I had been touring with PLQ before the Alpined shows, and The show two nights before at the Fox was much better than the two shows at Alpine. I also know Jerry would have loved to have played at the incredibly beautiful Fox theater one more time. I like less people with good vibes. I mean who wants to go to the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl in Vegas again in 115 degree weather? not me. The other three years they played there were great but the crowds got out of hand. In my opinion that was the ultimate downfall of Jerry. I think PLQ should get back together and add Bobby to the line up. On one condition Phil picks out the songs for Bobby to sing. I love Micky and Billy, but listening to Micky sing is painfull. I am trying to decide if I will go to Bonnaroo? I did not go last year. What is the scene like? Are there adequate facillities there? Can you bring in your own beer and drink it openly? I love all the members of the band, but without Warren it is hard for me to get pumped up about a show.
Have a great day.
>>Warren's cool when it comes to soulful vocals, but he can't hold a candle to Joan
whoa!!! your kiddin right?
No, Joan has a better voice than Warren, IMHO. At the valentines show she wasn't allowed to showcase her abilities. Just the fact she was there, was the reason I went. Try listening to her album "Relish" with "What if God was one of us" and "St Theresa" for truly meaningful, and heartfelt vocals.
Actually, Warren is starting to piss me off. It seems like he is always promoting himself and his projects a little too hard. Dividing his energy between too many bands and losing his touch. I particularly noticed this at Red Rocks last summer with his accoustic parking lot shows/autograph sessions, constantly promoting himself
chris g. If you have hung around here at all before you decided to post you probably seen a few pholks here w/ similar views as yours..
We all have our opinions......
What the guys decide to do w/ their careers is their deal...
And what we decide to listen to is ours...
All we can do is wish the best for all the musicians and their phamalies.....be organ donors and give blood..
As far as the Phil Zone is concerned...You'll prob never find a better place to spend your internet time..
>> Actually, Warren is starting to piss me off. It seems like he is always promoting himself...
Yeah, you right. Warren should spend more time promoting Joan Osbourne.

So how SHOULD he make a living: Let Clear Channel do all his promoting? Maybe do some video's? Maybe have his tour sponsored by Coors Lite?
I have to give him credit for having the courage to buck the music industry.
This is coming from someone old enough to have lived through, as an adult, the heartbreaking trivialization of musicianship that was at the core of the '80's/ video/ MTV "revolution".
(Oh, yeah, at the same time, Jerry was dying on stage of heroin addiction.)
Warren's da man...!
Joan, schmoan...give me Susan T. anyday over Joan's wiggling stage antics.
Wow Berry,You really wanna hear Picasso Moon and Way To Go home? You're probably one of those people who hated hearing the Sailor>Saint huh?
I do love all the musicians that have been playing with Phil over the last five years, and will take what I can get. My point is that when PLQ first started playing they were great, but after two years they were outstanding. Why is Warren starting to piss you off. Remember the Other Ones did not invite him for the Fall tour. Imagine what would have happened if Phil had not stopped doing the Further Festival crap and started PLQ!!!! Rat Dog would have never became popular enough to promote the Terrrapin shows, and Mickys' Mystery Box give me a break. I am so glad that all the band members realize that the only one that can pull off singing Stella is Warren. I gained a lot of respect for Bobby when he left that song to Warren. The Jams between Jimmy Herring and Warren can be spectacular. Bobby and Jimmy will never pull those types of Jams off. And I have been tired of listening to Bobbys' self indulgent screaming since the early 1980s. We all know that is why Jerry would turn his back to the crowd so much of the time during Bobbys' tirades. I do not want to hear Picasso Moon, and Way to go Home, how about Rob singing Lazy River Road, and Phils improved voice doing Days Between. Like I said I will take what I can get. It is all good.
They are playing The Valentine's Day Show on a constant loop at www.live365.com. When you get to the "search window" type in "2012" and click enter. It will bring up a page with a link to 02/14/03 - THE DEAD. Click it and enjoy the music.

Hey, if anyone has a quality copy of this show, I'd certainly be willing to TRADE for it (I have 80-90% of the PLQ/TOO of the last 3-4 years), and will even promise to vine it out on the audio vine board (haven't seen that happen yet . . .)
This is supposed to be a review of the show area not a bunch of people gripping, gesh.

Just got the show.Have to agree the hard to handle with warren and joan.Incredible.
I must say, I was extremely dissapointed when I heard this show. I was expecting this group to be much tighter than they actually are at this point. They had already been through an ENTIRE TOUR!! Which as far as I'm concerned had some wonderful moments. It doesn't get much better than Jimmy Herring and Rob so as far as having the musicians and talent( not to mention the incredible guys who started it all) this band could be absolutely great. But they aren't and I can't seem to figure out why, It seems like bobby and Jimmy can never get on the same page, phil is trying to do to much, and the Rob and Jeff combo just doesn't do it for me. Rob is by far the better piano player(me being one,it's not even close),maybe Jeff outshines Rob a little bit on organ but not by a substantial amount. I think that when you listen to the tapes from this show you will realize the jams go absolutley no where with no dirction at all. The Supplication jam, the "Love Supreme jam", which i put in quotations because the only part of the jam that has any relavence towards Coltrane's Love Supreme is the chant at the end, which was only said about three times. Rob played the modal Tyner voicings over the opening vamp but the melody was never played and jam had nothing to do with the structure of the tune. This was an extremely dissapointing listen for me. And I love Lazy lightning but the boys got to start rehearsing some of these tunes because the strict butcherings that have happend as of late on many of the songs I really don't find to be entertaining, but very sad in some ways. Listen to how together the dead played that tune in any version from 77' and listen to the version from this show and see if it even compares at all. However one of the reasons why I love Phil and Friends so much is because they play dead tunes with their own twist on them. Like "Just a Little Light", or Terrapin, or the tightness and clarity of New Potato, I could go on and on with examples. It seems like "The Dead" are trying to recreate something that can't be recreated with what they had in Garcia. I think Jimmy Herring is the most amazing guitarist playing in the entire "jam band" scene right now, his leads(check out 7-5-02 with Phil is just one example) are nothing short of miraculus, mind blowing! And even though he played amazingly during the Wintertour I still feel that he hasn't really cut loose yet with this group yet and I can't wait till he does he may not ever be able to. Also from what I heard Bonnaroo was an absolute disaster, not just the dead set, but i guess the crowd was not into it at all and many of the bands were extremely confused and uninspired because of it. I guess Widespread invited Warren out to play and when they introduced him no one cheered and he almost walked off. Honestly I'm very confused about what is happening on the music scene today. I'm sure most of you who read this post may very well be out raged by some of the things I've said, but if anyone has any opinions about what they feel is happeing on the music scene I'd love to hear them, cause i certainly am very confused. I just don't know what people are listening to, or not listening to for that matter. I'm heading out next week to see a couple of Dead shows and I'm very excited for them, I hope the crowds are good and energized because bands really take notice of those kinds of things.
