So tonight is Phil and Friends at the Oakdale (now the Chevrolet, long live the Oakdale) Theatre in Wallingford, Doors open at 7:30 show will start 8:15-8:30. We wont have too much time to chill (cause we'll be at work until 5:30 way down here on the shoreline) Now excitement is starting to settle in, Phil Lesh (need no intro.) will be accomanied by Chris Robinson of the Black Crows lead guitar/vocals (Jack calls him Jesus), Larry Campbell of Bob Dylan's band on guitar/vocals, who is also back tonight after a 2 night absence in which John Scofield (one of our favorate solo/improv singer songrwritr in the jam band world) filled in, Jack and the boys got mad lucky in Buffalo, but now Mr. Campbell is back. Finally Mookie Siegel on keys and Barry Sless on guitar/pedal steel join Phil from Dave Nelson Band, and last but certainly not least the great John Molo, as always, on drums.
Now which way will Phil make our pleasure tend tonight...Predictions???!!

do you see all those references to "Jam" in taperrobs setlist?

well that's what tonight's second set pretty much was

2 straight hours or more of awe inspiring jams interlaced with an unbelievable full Dark Star, between a He's Gone, Comes A Time, UJB, Goin Down the Road each for the ages, and two verses of Viola Lee that were great - and that amazing long Samson Jam - and what Phil later said during the donor rap was something by, believe it or not, classical composer Charles Ives

this was all about the spaces in between - the music truly played the band tonight - this was a masterpiece painted before our eyes - and they just kept playing and playing and playing and it was all truly spectacular

I expected a bit of a letdown after the Scofield show in Albany but somehow - somehow - and this is saying one hell of a lot - they topped it -
they really did - as an ensemble

The first set was basically the Chris Robinson show who was on fire all night + a classic Pride of Cucamonga

I need sleep

such great music

Thank you Phil, Chris, John, Larry, Barry, Mookie from the bottom of my heart for this night

I'd have to call that the Samson jam for sure, though I see the similarity to the We are On Our Own.

Tapes will tell for sure, it was real electric.

Ok, first things first
Brown-Eyed Women
Was great. I've been looking forward to hearing this one, and they delivered nicely. Moved down to Row 15 dead center for this one, the sound was awesome.

Loser
Well done as well, not too long, just right.

Big Boss Man
Really steamy here, the first inkling of what we had in store.

Pride Of Cucamonga
What a treat, I believe we had Sless-meister on the pedal for this one, but I could be wrong. There was definitely a major twangy thing going on during the first and last part; in between, a grungy jam by Larry, lots of grit in it. Excellent transitions all the way around.

China Cat Sunflower
This thing really smoked. It could easily have been the highlight of almost any show, but there was plenty of challengers tonight, so I'll tell you my favorite(s) later.

Chris seems to really like this one, and he did a great job on it. Barry took the first lead and really did a fine job. Second time around, he eyeballed it over to Larry, who took a little while to pick up on it. Eventually the ball made it back to Barry, and he was doing all the classic Jerry stuff (he also did the Bobby groove throughout, and then jumped onto the Jerry lead in round 1!)

Barry was really awesome all night, I have to say that I really love his playing. He's straight down the middle Jerry style, which suits me just fine, and he plays with a lot of talent. No mistakes, just run after run of fine Grateful Dead lead guitar with all the right tones coming out of the Mutronics.

At the end of Chinacat, he kicks of the Rider transition and the band really gets into it. I figure this is it, they're finally gonna do it, building, building, building ... (and I'm back in the 15th row again) and then

Bam! Phil puts up his hands, says that's it boys, and next thing you know he's at the mike saying we'll see you later.

He could tell everyone was hurting bad for it and made some commment like "wait till you see what's next, don't worry".

Excellent first set, Chinacat definitely the highlight for me, although I'm sure many will tout the Pride!

I can't say as much about #2 right now as I need to go to bed, but man it was on fire. They easily could have stopped after Dark Star verse 1 and everybody one of said, "man, that was an excellent show". But no, the fires were to burn much longer.

The GDTRFB truly was one for the ages. At first I thought they were ripping out the Rider, it was so burned into my mind.

Again, Comes a Time was one for the ages.

(Great line Cary, I really appreciate the characterization).

Final word for tonight. I thought the venue was really kind, pretty easy to move around downstairs, a little tougher if you didn't have a stub. Lots of dancing in the aisles, with the periodic sweep of course.

Thanks to all my brothers and sisters who came out tonight and shared the space, the vibe inside was truly kind.

Thanks to all here at the Zone too, for keeping the vibe alive in these two years since the last good East Coast run.

See y'all on Saturday, and then onward to February!!!!

Alright, just one more. You can see from the second set list that the song selection was great and there were lots of jams.

A word on the jams:

The band has clearly found a beautiful place to jam. Dark Star was the best example, they really meandered up to it, suggested a few other choices, then seemed to back away altogether.

Lots of jams not connect to any song, just something in between atmospheric jazz, 12 tone music, and then switching off to R&B inspired grooves, much like what you might hear at the beginning of a "No More Do I".

It's hard to describe it in words, some of what I just said may be completely off base, but one thing for sure:

It feels real fine to be in the room when it's
happenening.

If you have any doubts, get thee to Atlantic City.

Definitely a great show. Song selection was great.
The jams toward the end of the first set, set the tone for the rest.
The second set flowed better than any I've heard or seen in a while.
Unfortunately this is my only one this tour.
Can't wait until February. Bring on the Beacon!

Ok the Jam in between Dark Star v1 and v2, during the show I defently heard a bit of a Sampson flavor, and at one point it sounded like they might be going into a Phil style version of "Liberty"

That listening to it again on the Car ride home (like they say in the commercial, "priceless") I could hear what others were saying sounded like Throwing Stones.

I will have to give it a listen again tommorrow and see what else I hear.
Unfortantly my recording cut out for a bit during the Playing in the Band so I won't be seeding it

WOW! Going on 3 hours of sleep, back to the workaday world & I'm speechless. REALLYREALLY a great one! "...an empty cup that only love can PHIL...>he's come to take his children home!!"

Song for song a gem in the making, by Chinacat, well, IT was taking off. Barry & Larry really tight interaction & what Phil thunders Molo equals! Thre was SOOOO much packed into the second set JAM its gonna take another listen to unpack, layer upon layer, hints, references, allusion, Charles Ives-ish compostion/musicology...Lots of little *toys* for my head to ponder on the commuter train!

Zonah Poz and Phairone, always nice to see you. Looked and looked for DD & Dan & Billy Sunday too, to no avail...my carpeted little reclusive corner was a wonder little place last night. second set was one for the ages.... jam after jam,,,dark star!!.. it seemed like they were actually going to go into sampson. first set was a little slow, it seemed like molo was either intenionally keeping down or he was just baked.... nothing like the beast he became in the second set. pride of cuc was sweet!!! loved barrys playing, larry needs to find his sound with the band...unfortunately that will probably be at the end of the tour.. these guys definately have the capability of becoming one of the best P&F. i had my hesitations on CR but he knew his place, singing sounded great. phils reference to charles ives and playing in 4 keys was cool
didnt see any zoners---couldnt even walk around the main patio entrance.. thats why i suggested meating on the other side patio. hope everyone had a great night---see you in AC

in the jam before the Dark Star, there were hints of Scarlet Begonias and Terrapin and others that i cannot remember right now...

wasnt even thing Throwing Stones during the mid DS jam..... i felt it sounded more Samson-ish....

***********************************************

Charles Ives (1874-1954) is the very model of an American original. Born in Danbury, Connecticut, he grew up with American music in his ears: marches played by his father's band, Protestant hymns he sang at revivals and played as a church organist, and popular songs of Stephen Foster and Tin Pan Alley, all American as apple pie. He continuously experimented with new compositional devices, using two or more keys at once, new kinds of chords, multiple simultaneous musical strands, quartertones, and other techniques to create music unlike any ever heard. All of these elements are part of his Symphony No. 4 (1910-25).

http://www.americansymphony.org/dialogues_extensio ns/2002_03season/2002_11_17/ives.cfm

Ives' life was devoted to questioning - to inquiry - and to the investigation of the meaning of life. The Unanswered Question (1906) is such an investigation. The composition is written for three groups of instruments which cooperate without being synchronized completely. The composition begins with strings - a string quartet only may be used - seated off-stage or distant from the other instruments which perform a simple chordal, hymn-like sequence of tonal, triadic harmonies. Ives, with his programmatic thinking suggests this "chorale" represents "The Silences of the Druids - Who Know, See and Hear Nothing". It also represents the ongoing process of natural forces - as Ives said "the music of the spheres". A trumpet declaims "The Perennial Question of Existence" seven times with only one tone altered with each declamation - C-natural alternates with B-natural, providing a metaphorical question and possible answer. Lastly, flutes "and other human beings" search for "The Invisible Answer". The trumpet's last declamation ends on B-natural suggesting more question than answer and the audience is left with the "music of the spheres" in their ears as the composition ends. The Unanswered Question and its companion of the same year Central Park in the Dark seem to be experiments with combinations of instruments coordinated with each other without specific synchronization and point in the direction that John Cage and others were to take later with aleatoric music.

"... I did sometimes do things that got me in wrong: for instance, a couple of fugues, with the theme in four different keys: C,G,D and A, and in another: C,F,B-flat and E-flat.

To show how reasonable an unreasonable thing in music can be: Look at a fugue! It is, to a great extent, a rule-made thing. So if the first statement of the theme is in a certain key, and the second statement is in a key a fifth higher, why cannot (musically speaking) the third entrance sometimes go another fifth higher? And the fourth entrance another fifth higher? And if it must hold to the nice old key system, why can't these themes come back in the same way? ..."

I was convinced they were going to play Liberty in that jam.

What a great show!!!

That second set was tasty. It rivals 7/21/01, but on a different level. 7/21/01 was pure space jam psychedelics, last night was pure sweet tunage. I was in third row on Larry's side and reveled in the way Phil drives this bus.

This is what LIVE music is all about!!

Lots of fun last night sitting 10th row. From where I was sitting, it looked like Larry was really enjoying the heck out of playing Uncle John's Band. I bet the Dylan gig was fun for him but he strikes me as a improvisational musician extraordinaire, where Phil is a great vehicle for his talents and Dylan live is fairly structured within a Dylan being Dylan sort of way. (Dylan fans will understand what I mean). Barry Sless and Larry traded leads thru most every song. Barry is technically competent but seems to play very structured scales within the Garcia framework, some creativity but not as much as Warren or Jimmy. Overall a nice show, good venue, fun time.

I also picked up the Scarlet and the Inspiration lead in. I think I even heard the Inspiration tease teased before the real tease, if you know what I mean. They were fluently quoting from all kinds of good stuff, and whether you call it a Samson's or a Throwing Stones, it was really strong, had everybody rockin' to whatever song was in their head, and was a lot more than a tease. (ie, lasted more than a minute, and they weren't just "hinting").

Great stuff.

And Gr8fuldad, you're welcome, I love reading the reviews at night too, and I really appreciate the nod of a fellow Zoner.

>>Lots of fun last night sitting 10th row. From where I was sitting, it looked like Larry was really enjoying the heck out of playing Uncle John's Band.

I hear you there, I strolled down to row 10 on in Larry's side and had a nice space there (and no, I was not the whistling dude). Larry seemed really stoked that he got to do the lead riff for UJB, and you could tell he knew this one deep.

For those RUkind fans out there, no question that Barry was doing the G-Bm-C-D version, pretty much the only way to go I suppose (contrast with the GD Anthology's G-D-C-D).

I just listened to the first set twice, CR, sounded killer on the 'Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring'....I take back what I said about not deserving to be on stage with PHIL - it's phil's choice, not mine...

I could see that being a Liberty jam too.

I thought Molo was on more of a Samson tear though, but I haven't listened to the tape so what do I know.

All I can say for sure is that last night, for me, it was definitely a few minutes of Samson. :-)

Nowwwww, THAT'S a 2nd Set!
:-)

Jam...JAM...JAM!
Every song stretched out...sweet.
:-)

A BEAUTIFUL THANG!
:-)

An' Munson #15 FINALLY gets the "Viola", the end of "Golden Road" morphin' right into it...an' the cross between a "Liberty" Jam an' a "Samson" Jam within "Dark Star" was RRRRRRRRRICH, indeed!
Jus' a superlative set of crisp jammin'...as it should be!
:-)

Okay Zoners im sure I can stir you up a bit with this one: I have always freegan thought that the Throwin Stones "on our own jam" was exactly a let it all loose samson and delilah jam out. That the two were interchangeable~!! Now im sure there are minor discrepancies, a half note here a note there, but I hear the licks and I consider them the same jam and I think of both songs when i am boogying down!
Now last night I didnt feel a whole lot of the Samson jam. I definately felt Scarlet teases overtoned with a Liberty Jam that left me hooting "Oooooo Freedom" at the conclusion of the imfamous Dark Star.
Can't wait to listen again let me know if i can BnP zoners!!

Hey Cary

that was a good spot indeed
(Same aisle with the 2 bald dudes)

I watched most of the first 2/3 either in the left aisle (in front of Mookie), or behind that section, dancing

Found my way over to the right side during the GDTRFB jam and noticed there was a lot more space, so I visited several times.

Even without hearing the tapes, I'm definitely gonna call it a Samson's, as Molo really kicked the whole thing off, just like on a real Sunday S&D preaching session

Great stuff, no question about, wish I had caught Scofield once just for the experience, but no doubting the Sless-meister in any event. If you like tasty Jerry sound straight up the middle, Barry's got it. Larry's good too, but he is definitely the guy new to the material.

to me theres no doubt it was a sampson, those songs are in different keys

that was one of the best dark stars ive ever heard--if not the best....no cheesy ass dead/bobby lead bullshit...with hand signals and all.. they just played it, when it was time to come back into the song it flowed rigth back in,,,no need to force the transitions like ratbob does

maybe I am jaded and spoiled by amazing GD and phil shows in the past (see last time phil played oakdale)--thought the playing was great, the set list lacked inspiration and the sound was harsh to say the least. I enjoyed all the dead tunes --esp brown eyes loser pride and chinacat-- the jamming in the 2nd set would have been great (golden rd>viola..) but the soundboard guy distorted the vocals--ruined the show for me. chris was lost during the entire second set--saw phil telling him what was going to happen next may times--he blew the dark star--but phil rescued it as usual. Barry was amazing--he really underatnds the GD scene and the tunes to say the least;larry was ok .

dear rob it was the house pa not the sound guy with the vocal problems .he even bought in his own subs so there would be more bass..he did the best he could with the pa he had and depending where you where the sound was either great or had some problems its a very hard room to mix with the pa they have in there.

beleive me im a PLQ purist, but 03 was weak in comparision to last night show. to me the 03 show never got off the ground---i remember clearly because i had brought a bunch of people to the show expecting a repeat of the warfield run id witnessed in sept

if you looked close through the show the only ones that phil didnt 'coach' were sless and mookie--who were flawless the whole night
as i said im my review--larry has to find his sound,,,,his distortion was tweaked a little to high for some songs. i dug CR and i had a chip on my shoulder about him going into the show.. ive never liked his over singing, im the hippiest persona, but to me it worked. he stayed away from the jams,, and didnt look lost to me. it seemed like he was enjoying the jams as much as i was. and to boot he only flubbed one line of china cat.

Barry's leads too.

Sorry I didn't see you there Negs.

As for DS, Phil and CR alternated lines, if I remember correctly.

As for the kids, Phairone, we had our boys (6 and 8) at NJPAC and we all a real good time.

8y old has now seen Shoreline Dead 04, Camden 1 Dead 04 and Phil NJPAC 2.
Little guy saw the same except for the middle.

I like the outdoors better with them, Shoreline was really the joint (Red Rocks or the Gorge would be even better!), but NJPAC was pretty good, not too smoky. I was a little worried about the volume after the first night, so I brought some earplugs, but turned out they weren't necessary. Little guy napped through Eyes but I woke him up for UJB (his first, Ed's second on the heels of ChinaCat>UJB>Rider(?) at Camden.

And, they both got their first Wheel!, and that's really why we were there.

Peace, maybe the missus and I will seek you out at AC Sat. I got to pay requisite homage to TR once at the Beacon, so I'll try to stop by and introduce myself again. I definitely appreciate all of your efforts on the behalf of the Phans.

Wally-world
December 6, 2005

The PreGame….
For four days I had made my home in Holyoke, MA, at a Holiday Inn – a hotel that really suits me for various tangential reasons, and I REC IT – and that choice of lodging actually had been a fortuitous move. Equidistant between friends (10 mins to the north and south), and right in the middle of Albany and Wallingford, AND, it would turn out, an easy drive to Framingham, which made it possible to pay my respects on Sunday, which was more important to MY SOUL than I could have realized.

So, though it had been home for 4 nights, Tuesday was checkout day. Once I broke down the Xmas lights and computer, and packed up the rest of my mobile apartment, I was once again Goin Down the Road, and off to Daydream & Dan’s to consolidate for game time.

A pizza, a bank run, a Friendly’s butter crunch with chocolate sprinkles (my classic “only in New England” treat!) led up to a 4 PM departure from the Springfield Area. Adios, western Mass….a landscape that now is ingrained in my soul and memories from a summer and fall of fun and tumult. Mt. Tom, Showcase Cinemas, the curve of the exit ramp of 17B…see ya in 2006. I’m headed SOUTH.

Sunset graced the sky as we escaped any major Hartford rush hour snags…blue sky and pink clouds with a crisp air clarity that screamed cold…old man winter.

The Wilbur Cross/Hutch/Merritt ushered us to Wallingford, and with a few switchups we found Archie Moore’s – met up with Sideshow and his compadres. Mike W arrived with a posse…Sneaky Pete…food, beers, free wings. Key and Geewiz arrived, and after the tab was paid we bolted to the lot as DD & D needed tickets.

At the lot we found…a tank…or two…and then tickets.
My buddy Nic arrived from Springfield, and we head IN.

Set One.
My seats were technically under the overhang so I scouted out new ones…we decided on House Right Wing. The sound was decent, view of stage fine, neighbors friendly, and for a while we had dancing room.

The first song I was unfamiliar with, and while it was well done, and Chris shined, I couldn’t yet plug in.

Brown Eyed was nice, warmed my heart. I’m not sure when I last heard this…seems like a while. I enjoy this song, in my mind one of the “Fennario Fables” – tales of the country life – complete with the shack and the moonshine. The reference to snow was apt.

Loser. MMMMM. Chris could do wonders with this, I immediately thought. He did do quite well. I was surprised this wasn’t saved for AC with the gambling tie in (but by the end of the show I realized the rotation is such that odds are it will show again.) “I can tell the Queen of Diamonds by the way she shines
Yes.

Big Boss Man. Nic didn't know it so it leaves her cold…we used it for a beer break. It fascinates me when deadheads don’t know Pig – I see how it can happen but I don’t empathize.

Sunday Sound – again I didn’t know it – but Nic and I agreed it is a beautiful song, the melody is nice. We headed to the balcony to see if we could get better sound and more dancing space.

PRIDE. A REALLY FINE PRIDE. I do believe Barry WAS on pedal here and it was a fine addition. But Phil doing Phil makes me grin ear to ear…and as per his compositions, it has exacting changes - that the band HIT, this time. HAPPY HUCK.

China Cat.
I was roaming and dancing, so I heard dollops and bits, but the energy was solid and from the evidence it seemed a fine one. Seems the reviews support my suspicions. As far as Rider – they did EVERYTHING but actually play it – did the entire transition – and YES I was VERY AWARE it had been played in Albany so I couldn’t quite believe - - -
Ah but right you’re not going to play it.

SET BREAK.

I tried to get to the Designated Area but it was like danger danger will robinson crush show.
Hit the House Left smoking section (much mo better) and luck allowed me to run into Eize and meet Willow!!! As always at the SHOW…way too brief but still satisfying. Good people – glad to share hugs and nicotine!!!

Nic and I headed into the seating early to try to scam something suitable as far as seats. Nic made it down to the front front and got me the message she’d hang down there for a song…and I would have chilled at at our old hang HOWEVER
A young gent (early 20s) was puking on the floor so I didn't really want to stay there –

Kevin DD came to my rescue! He stubbed me down to the mid orch where there was room for me to hang a bit…what a treat to see and share time (and MUSIC!) with this fine freak and Miss Cindy Loo. THANK YOU.

Set Two.

Cats. FUN! A repeat from Boston but for personal head space reasons I enjoyed this one more. Got the crowd dancin’ and FUNNIN
Time is a stripper…doin it just for you!
(Do Mookie and Phil and Larry do back up on this as Jackie and Gloria did with JGB?)
INTO
A FINE PUMPED UP GOLDEN ROAD!!! The transition was perfect, didn’t lose one ounce of steam…I danced WITH RECKLESS ABANDON. :-O And, as I like, we got the nice big power atonal end chord. YUM.

I went back to regroup with Nic, borrowed a ticket from LSB (thanks again sweet one) and we spent most of the rest of the set back in those mid orch seats….waaaaay house left where we had open rows to jig out.

VIOLA. BIG. AWESOME. I had told Sideshow at Archie’s I thought it was UP in rotation and he countered he thought it would be saved for AC. HEH HEH HEH wrong sideshow. Good thing to be wrong about though.
Band jams BIG here. It’s a good Viola like that. Tease of Here Comes Sunshine – a serious one – Kevin and I concur and I shared the predicition with Nic – only to have it become a Crazy Fingers infinity loop….
But no not that either.
Goin down the Road! More energy, more dance, and Larry even sings a verse! PURE FUN.
Back into Viola…thanks for the biggie, boyz. NICE.
And then a He’s Gone – perfect for my friend Nic’s reality – and I enjoyed a LOT. Maybe I had low expectations of CR and he surpassed them? I prefer to think it was a good version. Had OOMPH.

And then
Into
Dark Star.
I thought they would play V2 – finish the Boston one – bookend New England and the “fritz vibe” – but NO
V1.
Okay….
More jam. I think of Bucky – he is a jam junkie – I hope he is happy, impressed, not booing. ;)
THEN THE LIBERTY JAM. Fuck Samson or T Stones. This was LIBERTY. And I was psyched for a Philco Liberty – a nod to TABA – but NO!
V2. wow. Okay, complete viola, complete Dark Star….doesn’t this venue have a curfew????
I have to drive to NYC.

Then Comes a Time. Now, selfishly, while I love this song, I had heard a powerful one in Boston and didn’t want to revise my memory. Went out for a smoke, talked with LSB. It was a nice chat – a little guilt tinged as THERE WAS MUSIC INSIDE – but I had my reasons.

And then UNCA?
Okay, here’s the New England bookend – begin with it in Boston and end with it in Conn – if the band is even thinking like that what with their back and forth to Fairfax and all. I’m a little over the Boston repeats closing out what has been a FINE set, but Unca is a cornerstone of what it’s all about.

Set over.
Band confers for FOEVVVVVVAH….

Now I’m really antsy, and so actually is Nic – she has a drive and early work. So when Chris breaks out the Do Right Woman, as much as I love it, we split…totally apropos for my personal headtrip.
Doooo riiiiiiight
ALLLLLLL NIIIIIIIIGHT
Woman
And we’re leaving.
Nice cosmic chuckle, Mr. Universe. PAH BAH KAPLOOEY.

Quick round on the tank and a moment for show deconstruction with Bucky, Key, Geewiz and Mrs. B – Mike W bails on my ride to the city (and I was so looking fwd to the BONDING TIME, DOOD, GRRRR – heh – ah well )
So I zoom back to the city on a relatively deserted Merritt.

On the ride, my mind is filled with thoughts of FRIENDS and the cornerstone of TRUST….and what it means to RESPECT people. Bucky – for instance – who spars with me re: reviews, and yet I still respect his opinion. TRUST – and what it means to have friends who support and sacrifice when you NEED time, kindness, thoughtful advice – Dan and DD have shown me so much of that in the last week. FOLLOW THROUGH – everything presented in the wake of Fritz’s passing – the board response, the wake, the feeling of our community – what a shining example of Follow Through I have seen in this past week. WOW.

In summary:
The show was OF THE JAM – perhaps AC will be OF THE PARTY as the JAM is now “dealt with” – and all the shows I have seen (Boston, Albany, Wallingford), as well as the TRAJECTORY of gel and improvement, gives me faith in what this lineup can accomplish.

YES – I did feel the first set was a little disjointed…maybe bc I didn’t know two of the songs, including the opener…or maybe bc Scofield was SO HOT and Larry had to re-establish his presence.
On that note, I want to add that I DO FEEL LARRY CAMPBELL DOES A GREAT DEAL IN THIS BAND. Barry is so much like Jerry (and yet different) – but his tone on that gee-tar is SO JER – it’s very easy for US to plug in and swoon. Larry is different. But he is good glue for this creation of Phil’s.
And it’s Phil’s bus to drive – whether he’s showing us the POWER of Q, or what it seems is happening NOW – new talented FEELING musicians, at the top of their game, interpreting the canon and ALSO pushing the limits of where the music can go, in a new yet valid way.

Did I hear the four keys at once? I don’t know. I heard some deep and intricate music.
But Phil heard it, played it, and drove the bus to a super destination. He’s loving this – and if Phil’s happy – ya gotta know it’s of benefit to the MUSIC.

Allllllllllll ABOARD! Next stop – Atlantic City – a RUN – a MARATHON – an EXPERIENCE.

Those who’ve not yet seen THIS should take some extra vitamins and rest up.
You’ll need all the stamina you can muster.
I personally CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR IT.

Arooooooooo!

Gotta say - this was the BEST show of the ones I've seen so far - DC's setlist looks like that coulda been a better show - who knows? - Man the JAMMING last night was PHENOMENAL - what Phil said about playing in 4 different keys ala Charlie Ives was no exaggeration - the first set seemed a little week - Cucamonga being the highlight and China Cat I wanted to see but into NOTHING? Well I guess that is at least a FIRST - 2nd set tho did it up - Cats opener, then Golden Road (GREAT version with Barry's Jerry-like leads shining thru) seemed to me this show would be like the Pittsburgh/Albany setlists - just decent tunes, nothing "big" - oh boy the Viola bustout proved me wrong! - then the JAMMING commenced - oh man, don't think I've heard SO MANY different teases/jams packed into 1 show - and the length - thought the Dark Star would be Verse 2 from Boston - but no! A full version! This show blew Boston out the door - not even a close comparison! And they managed to beat the Oakdale "jinx" (last 2 shows there - 01 & 03 - the energy of the show just got sucked into the void and the shows just seemed to go nowhere) - I'd rate this up there with 7/21/01 as the best Phil's played in CT (the length of this show - 3+ hours - for me makes it better than the 01 show as that show was only 155'). One highlight was meeting Bucky at the setbreak and he was all critical of the 1st set - I told him the 2nd set would be more of the same - nothing big or epic - then getting to laugh as they did all that great stuff and thinking of his reaction (oh he probably still hated it - who am I kidding?). Also great is that now I'm guaranteed another Viola Lee somewhere further down the road this tour - and Dark Star!

>>>Jam(Samson & Delilah jam)>

>>>rob...i think that's the interlude from throwing stones...the "we are on our own" jam

>>> in the jam before the Dark Star, there were hints of Scarlet Begonias and Terrapin and others that i cannot remember right now... wasn't even thinking Throwing Stones during the mid DS jam..... i felt it sounded more Samson-ish....

hey rob...i'm not calling you out or anything...and i certainly don't intend any disrespect...i hope you know it's all good...whatever

samson and delilah and the "throwing stones interlude" are pretty much the same rhythm...but i just checked out the chords

samson and Delilah - tdead - 08/15/04
G/G/G/C/G
G/G/G/D/G

throwing stones interlude - tdead - 02/09/04
A/A/A/D/A
A/A/A/E/A

P&F also played this same jam 12/02/05...after operator just before viola lee v2
A/A/A/D/A
A/A/A/E/A
i just checked the disc

as well as at oakdale 12/06/05 during dark star

chris picked up the electric for it...and i thought i saw him on screen playing in the 5th fret

the "we are one our own" jam just makes better phil-sence to me...because it's played more like an interlude than a song jam...and as i have shown it's the right key...not the key of samson

certainly any song can be played in any key...all you have to do is sing it...and who knows...chris might just break out singing samson in the wrong key

that's my take on it...anyway

It was Liberty. I can see how someone MIGHT mistake it for the TS bridge build - similar tempo
and then add Molo thunder and I can even see how you could go Samson.

But it was Liberty.

Liberty - p&f - there and back

different key huck...sounds like the same rythym though

Woulda never thought of that jam as Liberty - at first sounded like Samson, then progressing into much more like the Throwaway jam . . .

LOVED this show. Phil let IT ALL happen. Some of the jams could have been tighter but Cats down under the stars had this old hippie dancing like a 20 year old. Dark Star & UJB & Comes a Time was a gift from GOD.

Didn't like the heat in the lobby staring happy trippers down, and the sound could have been far superior in the Lobby. But inside you could't have dreamed of better acoustics. Pride of Cucamonga and Golden Road took us way back, and you could really see the band communicating and having one GRAND conversation among Phriends. I just loved the way they EXPLORED!

Thought CR flubbed a verse during Loser, but so what? I miss Jerry!

Anyway - CRISP and co. - Thanks for the ride to the Marriott and see ya'll in AC.

PS = definitely SAMPSON

and you ladies do know how to DANCE!

So happy to be HOME in NJ. SHINE ON!

okay, I'm listening now.
Still going with Liberty.

Yes, it sounds like Throwing Stones. But my head didn't go there, maybe bc it's not in their repetoire?
Samson -- sure, same tempo.
BUT THE GUITAR RIFF.
bumbaaa
badiggybadiggy
BUMMMMBAAAA
bumbaaaaa
baDIGGYbaDIGGY
BOOOOOM
BAAAAAAAAA

Samson doesn't have the badiggy - it's more BAM BAM.

imo.

i thought this the best show of the tour...(i've listented to maybe four)...certainly the greatest 2nd set so far...i just could not beleive the setlist as it unfolded...i am absolutly loving this band...that pedal steel is hypnotizing...i like what someone else said...(and i will embellish on it)..."that california acid cowboy shit"...i'm taking fri off and going to atlantic city...whose got my ticket?...one fri...one sat

the throwing stones jam is a lot like liberty-- i always thought it would be a great segue, TS>liberty-- i think ratdog played that earlier in the year

Wallingford was the turn for home..

12 shows down 5 to go

And down the stretch they go......

Phil Lesh by 20 lengths ala Secretariat in the Belmont Stakes..

I still like the Samson for the beat.

But the chords I saw Chris playing were definitely more like

E/E/A/E
E/E/B/E

So that looks more like a Liberty. Thought it was way too fast for that tho, so
I'll have to check on the tape.

ya'll are kind of amazing...

the crazy fingers infinity loop....

just catching up on the reviews of the last few days,

what is the arc of this tour?

the new guys finding their legs at the beginning....

JohnfrggnScofield jumping in in the middle...

An enervated band bringing Larry back in to new heights when we might expect a let down...

So how much are flights to AC anyway?

Hi Folks,

Since I'm always reading the board, I figured I should just sign up and join in.

I am a long-time GD, Phil, Black Crowes, and New Earth Mud fan, so this pairing was heaven for me.

IMO, it was not only the best show of the tour so far (of all that I have heard), but also the best Phil performance I have seen in CT.

I love the rootsier direction Phil is exploring right now, though at the CT gig, Larry did not play an acoustic instrument all night, and there was very little pedal steel throughout. I was as rockin' as I've ever seen Phil.

I LOVE that Chris not only brings his own style to the table, but he can conjure a little Jerry and Pig too. I am thrilled to hear all of these Pig tunes again.

I thought it was interesting that Phil actually explained the thematic element of Set 2, as a tribute to Charles Ives. Nice touch, and a bit of CT music history I am sure few know.

fwiw, I hear Liberty and Throwing Stones teases too, among tons of others.

So chinacat 02' had a visual of liberty chords!!
Huckberry spelled it out for us "umbaaa badiggybadiggy BUMMMMBAAAA" (tight Huck!) You can prolly hear me belt out an "Ooo Freedom" in someones recording. I'de say the the proof is in the pudding, thanks to TROB's stream. However, the more we all listen we you know from what we hear we can pull out our wildest dreams and imagination. Thats why we all love and support the "Power of the Q," THANKS PHIL, and thats why Phil passes these opportunities right back on to us! Talk about feeding off one another!

PRAISE THE GD FAM and the POWER IF THE Q!!

HAVE A GREAT TIME TONIGHT ALL!!!!!!!

>>>>And, as I like, we got the nice big power atonal end chord. YUM.

I like that atonal GR power chord myself, glad they nailed it...

AMEN SISTAH!

>>>>I'd rate this up there with 7/21/01 as the best Phil's played in CT.

Is it just me or do the GD/Phil/even TOO/THE DEAD always kick ass in Connecticut, must be some poweful psychedelilc vortex/nexus between Boston and New York or something. Always crazy psychotic enerty in CT. Or maybe they just know Bucky's out there somewhere and want to please him...

KK, You don't want me to go there b/c you know my edge and wit might alienate half the readers on this board. Tongue in cheek satire doesn't always get the right interpretation on a blog. Besides, I'm at work feeling that the next three company holiday parties will be so taxing on my energy that I might not have any more to give to this board. One comment, OK? Between Mark Karan & Steve Kimock, Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes & Jeff Pevar, Warren Haynes & Jimmy Herring or Barry Sless and Larry Campbell, I'll take Warren Haynes and Larry Campbell and throw in Mookie Wilson for a Center Fielder to be named later.

I'm here.....

I was there.

You know what?
I'm sick of writing 2 hour reviews.......

First Set was dead until the jam in Pride of Cucamunga..........

The 2nd set, well, it was just epic, up there with the great 2nd sets I've seen & looooooooooooooong.........

All the stuff, Samson, Liberty, Terrapin, Throwing Stones, I heard alot of teasesing, but moreso, 2 major jams around Viola & then the big Dark Star with a long lead in prior to the first verse (They hit the DS theme 3 times) & a longer jam in between verses & another fairly long jam going out of verses...........

Great stuff.

for those who know the Crowes' Sunday Sound it was BIG TIME too and the recording verifies that

>>>P&F also played this same jam 12/02/05...after operator just before viola lee v2
A/A/A/D/A
A/A/A/E/A

the jam they played during dark star at oakdale on 12/06/05 is the same rhythm as the above...but the key is different...and the tempo is a little faster...i just checked it against the download
E/E/E/A/E
E/E/E/B/E

now that they've done this same jam in different keys...i don't know what to think

though i still feel it's more consistent with the "on our own" jam...rather than liberty or samson

Now, I NEED a 'tape' (CD) of the show (hint, hint)......

>>>>>>>>What about 4/6/00 i considered that the king of Connecticut Phil shows!?!!

Well, that remains to be heard.
My thoughts now: #1 (4-6-2000) was better from the git-go (with a looooong 2nd set, but not as 'out there jamming' minus songs), #4 (12-6-05) was a poor 1st set until they 'clicked' (I've seen it before, check 10-14-00), then a killer show from that point, including a HUGE 2nd set that rates up there with my best attended EVER - FABULOUS if you like it long & hard........

Now, where's that 'tape', CD, link, whatever?

PS: All we know is MP3/SHN.........

>>>>>>>>One highlight was meeting Bucky at the setbreak and he was all critical of the 1st set - I told him the 2nd set would be more of the same - nothing big or epic - then getting to laugh as they did all that great stuff and thinking of his reaction

TRuthfully, Sideshow pontifocated on how I'd hate the list & set, getting no Viola or Dark Star, while I just humored him by 'yessing' him, as I wasn't in the mood to argue over what the band MIGHT play.

I guess I called the right songs & you didn't, huh. Bob?
Now, how 'bout making it up by sending me a copy to spread up here?.......

>>>Okay Zoners im sure I can stir you up a bit with this one: I have always freegan thought that the Throwin Stones "on our own jam" was exactly a let it all loose samson and delilah jam out. That the two were interchangeable~!!

Ive always thought that too; particularly with the Q. Good to know Im not alone. Listen to a Q Samsons and hear Jimmy play Jerry's typical solo from Throwing Stones almost note for note.

Downloading this show now, glad to hear so many had fun.

well, I guess I must have been coming down with a flu that night--after listening to the discs (audience mind you not sbds)--the first set although a bit slow was sweet-- chris has a great voice and barry rocks well with phil.loved BE women, loser sunday sound and CHINACAT--where was the rider? Pride is a real shame--of all the Phil songs that is my least forite(rates up there with wave to the wind!) Still wish warren was there --the second set had its highlights(gdtrfb, drk star uncle johns, C A Time and cats down under--phil's continued great play is inspirational. I was off that night not them!

What a show! The front man from the second best American band ever with the best bass player from THE best American band ever... a dream show. The discs back up what I already knew. My phriend had the show for me a mere two days later! (you gotta love the computer AND the people who share the music!) I saw Larry with Dylan's band when they played with PNF in Worcester, in '99, and saw him again with Dylan and PAF, in 2000, at Great Woods (yeah, I know it is the "Tweeter Center", but it'll always be GW to me.;)Who knew I would get to see LC actually jam WITH Phil six years later! BTW, I have that 2000 Dylan disc, I can't believe how "restrained" LC was, after seeing him rip it up with PAF.
Thanks Phil, Thanks Chris, Thanks LC, Thanks to all the Friends... don't let it end...
See ya in Providence.

I'm glad the show was so great! This was the first CT show I've missed in Years. Last time I saw phil at the Oakdale was PLQ in 03'. It was an okay show, with it's moments, but it seems like this show smoked especially the 2nd set. I guess you never know when the good ones are gonna happen. I'll be in NYC and Providence so looking forward
