Instant Karma for Lennon, and I think CRs voice would be suited to busting out Brent tune; I was thinking Blow Away perhaps.
I'd love to hear Chinatown Shuffle while we're at it, and wish we could get a reprise of at least one Black Crowes song this tour. Wiser Time sounded great last December.
wish I could be at these shows. have fun and travel safe!
Hide Your Love Away again, as well, I would imagine, with Larry on the Baritone Guitar

Nice nod to Lennon, but we sure got lucky in Oakdale.
SOLID
Gotta hear this. Torrenteers, post link when ready. Waiting to hear Strawberry Fields. An another Rosemary. Solid as a Rock.
So whats wrong with Mookie? Why did everyone boo him?
I don't think they were sayin boo..they were sayin moo!
Sam L.
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
oh...my bad.. i was pretty toasted
Strawberry Fields, nice...
Strawberry Fields and Revolution are great choices.
Who sang what? Is Chris Robinson using the in-ear monitors favored by Phil and Molo?
What a meltdown. Im not one for reviews, but OH MY. I thought the HOB was gonna lose it's roof during Lovelight.
Just got off the bus, and back at my NYC desk at 9am. Culture shock.
What time did the show begin?
Tickets just say "doors 7pm".
Thanks! bzlrbi@aol.com
Show started around 8 - maybe a little before. Long break between sets. Ended around 11:45.
Killer show - that Help-Slip-Frank blew my mind. Lovelight, St. Stephen, Rosemary was an amazing series as well. Those and the Lennon tribute = unbelievable show. Set 1 was average but very well played - Althea in particular, violin on that was awesome. Eight Miles High had a great arrangement. It's only going to get better. Sless was on fire all night!!
Setlist looks like Phil remembered he was in a certain band for 30 years..
And it was the movie Hard Days Night and the fun those guys had..that made him want to be in a rock and roll band..
Bodes well for the stretch run to finish line Tuesday @ Fox in Atlanta..
what was the security situation like ?
Security was a little tight - made you empty pockets and checked with metal detector. Where there is a will there is a way. I was downstairs in GA and when it got a little crowded (up front where sound was killer!) was the best place to smoke - safety in numbers! Everybody was lighting up - there was a huge mushroom cloud of kind bud. Contact high for the band I'm sure.
The jam out of Box was 5-6 minutes of the most inspired playing I've ever heard.
CR is much better than he was at NJPAC. He's still CR, but he's on time with the changes.
Bucky, I thought of you, you're comment about your disdain for "acoustic ditties" during the FOTD. It may have started as an acoustic dittie, it definitely didn't end like one.(Funny aside, when I said that I hoped you could hear this, because I wanted your take on it, Sideshow Bob told that story you mentioned in his Bday thread.)
I was at the 2 in North Jersey, and I've listened to the rest that are up. This is, by far, the best of the run, so far.
If this is just an indication of these guys getting their sea legs under them, it's truly frightening what they might ultimately be capable of.
I admit to not being a big fan of many younger, so called, jam bands, because I think that, all too often, they really don't get it. Improvisational music is not just going up there and winging it. It's rigorously composed music, if it's going to have any chance of transcending the mundane.
I think many of them would stand to benefit greatly by listening carefully to these guys play.
Venues: This place was great. Pristine sound. I walked all over, front, back, up, down, and couldn't find a dead spot anywhere. I also thought NJPAC's sound was terrific. These are relatively new buildings. Hopefully, it's an indication that architects who design spaces for music are getting their collective act together. Sacred space aside, you get under the lip at the hallowed Beacon, you're listening thru earmuffs.
As for the inevitable comparisons that take place in these threads, whether 2001 or 1973, living in the past is still living in the past. It's not about better, worse, right or wrong. It's just different. Apples and oranges. Getting hung up on superlatives seems, to me, at least, to be self defeating.
Have fun tonight, all.
That's usually the safest place in any venue. When you're up front in the crowd you can even crouch down momentarily if security is a little on the heavy side.
I'm having fun BUT....WHERE'S WARREN?!?!?!?
damn, there's empty spaces that need to be filled that just aren't with this band...
I know it won't happen, but bring back the Q
<<<So whats wrong with Mookie? Why did everyone boo him?
<<<<I don't think they were sayin boo..they were sayin moo!
LOL. THAT's funny.
When Phil milks the turkey, the crowd says "MOOOOOOO"
Nice review Rik. Glad ya had fun. They do indeed rock!

RRE! THEY get it!
Rasta; I don't usually comment on statements like the one in your thread but........ were you there? Warren would be a third wheel just like w/ the dead in 04. No room for him in this band. You just can't throw Warren in the mix and expect it to be better. I would take this band over any band that has or had Warren in it .......... Warren needs to eat more acid........ All that being said, this was my first show of the tour and I am bummed I didn't just go for it these guys were great. They get some really interesting grooves going without playing fifty notes per second. Faster is not always better in psychedlic interpretation(sp). I am not a big fan of faster harder louder, while this band does play fast and loud it still has those (Dead Heaven) moments. You know when the playing gets really pretty and your just standing there swaying w/ everyone arouNd you and you think to yourself "this must be what heaven is like or I MUST BE IN HEAVEN. I just love when it gets like that. Last Night had many moments like that. Beg borrow or whetever to see these guys, you never know if it will get this good again. No review just some thoughts while enjoying the afterglow from last night. See you all tonight.
hey catch. I was there. I wouldn't have said anything if i wasn't. Last night, there wasn't any energy. and you would take this band over the Q?!?!? dude, i think you've eaten too much acid.
Warren in the Dead wasn't the best b/c Weir wanted to be in control of the band.
I'm not saying that Warren should be in this band. I'm saying that I wish warren was there w/ jimmy and Rob rather than anything else.
To answer a few comments....
I found that the initial security getting in was extremely thorough. Opened smokes, checked socks, etc. However, left the venue for a few minutes to get some air mid-set, they stamped my hand, and I was able to go fetch the elusive party supplies from the car and get back in with just showing the hand stamp - no patdown, nothing.
Sound under the 'lip' in the HOB was a bit muffled too, I thought. Once you stepped out from under it and got closer to the stage - yowza!! It really was loud and crisp, and sounded fantastic. Love the venue in general - lots and lots and lots of bars, so you rarely wait for a drink. Crowd started off a bit 'tranquil', but really got roaring in the second set starting with Lovelight.
The comments about Chris are spot on. He's really nailing it now. Larry looked really happy to be back, and the whole stage was full of smiles. Enjoy Fri and Sat, all...
Listen to Rik--he has the age and battle scares that only a trible elder can
SMS
>>RRE! THEY get it!
Right on, Peglet. When I hear these guys, I realize that Jerry was just a bluegrass musician on acid with an electric guitar. Their song writing, songs, and skills are top notch.
Rik, I was right there with you until I heard RRE. Then i realized that what I appreciate most about the dead was that they are truly an american folk/roots music band. The other, younger bands are so contemporary, that It didn't appeal to me as much.
Sorry for the non-phil content, but just had to get that in.
<<<When I hear these guys, I realize that Jerry was just a bluegrass musician on acid with an electric guitar.
((((pyschedelic bluegrass)))) Right you are!!!
Jerry melted/melts me. RRE melts me. That says it all.
Phil too (o/c)
>I'm having fun BUT....WHERE'S WARREN?!?!?!?

>I know it won't happen, but bring back the Q
I don't know where Warren is, but I gotta say that I like some empty spaces. Doesn't need to be a full assault all the time. This band is doing it for me. Not once at Oakdale did I think of Jimmy, Warren, or Rob - but that is just me.
I really hope this is the band for the Feb. run back east.
I think Warren might show up either tonigh or tomorrow night. Hopefully, tomorrow night when the wife and I will be there.
Why do you tink that?
>>>>>Warren needs to eat more acid........
LMFAO!!! I nominate this for Quote of the Year!!
>>>>>Warren needs to eat more acid........
LMFAO!!! I nominate this for Quote of the Year!!
2nd.
WOW - Finally I get a GD-related Birthday show and it was a great one! First AND Second sets great all the way through - the only part that kinda dragged was Lovelight-Rollin'-Lovelight (was wanting some heavy psychedelia at this point in the set - this belongs as a setcloser imho) - but what came after more than made up for it - the crowd was mellow this night (writing this on Sat) - I'd place this show as the 2nd best I've seen (after Oakdale) and judging by the setlists I'd still place DC as the best show of the tour, Oakdale 2nd, 12/8 maybe even with 1st night Chicago . . .
You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free you MIND instead
Rik, grate meeting you, sorry didn't get you those disks, will mail 'em. Nice B'day show Sideshow, twas a pleasure.
FUCKIN ROSEMARY....NUFF SAID......WOW WHAT AMAZING NIGHT..12/8
GOD BLESS JOHN LENNON
the bertha, senor and 8 miles high were all top shelf in the first set
second set was a barn burner and had such a fantastic time
WOW! great show!
rosemary was as sweet as it gets and the Straw Fields and Revolution knocked my socks off!
Sorry about your Cat's Midy.
When Jake threw the pick late, I could feel you guys wince all the way up here.
