u can tell how it sounds by reading a message board? are u a member of the x-men?
i was there last night i know they must be cooking big time tonight and with that set list and warren making an appearance it has to be amazing.everything they touched last night turned out pretty awesome...with that set list and the excitement of warren popping out for 2nd set....i guarantee people are flipping and gonna be raving about this show....wish i was there

no tye dye or headband!?!??!?

Phil on Big Brown
Caution
This show looks incredible. Would have heard Barry and Warren play together. I wonder why Barry didn't play? Maybe it was Warrens Idea, but I think it was Phil's decision
I am sick to my stomach that I was not there tonight.I was there last night but excitement of no band announced made all seem to expect something bigger in the guitar slot (i.e., no disprespect to Larry and Barry but the Warren/Trey spector loomed large). Enjoyed the show thoroughly last night but how come no Warren???? Damn--well I will be there tomorrow with bells on.
maybe tomorrow larry is gonna sit our for warren
maybe another night barry and larry are gonna swap switching positions for tey
enough with the ryan adams tunes. when did p&f ever cover a mule song? poll the audience at the show and ask them who they would like to hear phil cover - ryan adams ain't gonna be nowhere near the top of that list....you wanna play ryan adams tunes then put him on the stage
Q did a few Mule tunes, seems to me
rob, cool shot of joan & warren
Who cares what the audience *wants* to hear?
seems to me that p&f have played more ra songs in two nights at one venue than they ever played of an acting members other band at the same venue...how about some of barracos work with zt? i ain't ever bothered with that but would be willing to listen.....
Only Mule tune they ever play, as far as I know, is Tastes Like Wine.
beautifully broken
What's the name of this band?....PHIL LESH & Friends
He can play what ever he wants.
We can call the "Whambalance Now"......get over it it's not the Dead,or the Q......If you don't like it,don't go and see them...geez so much complaining

When you are the leader of the band then YOU can choose what is and what is not played.
Too "funny" and selfish when you say " 'you' wanna play Adams tunes then put him on the stage."
Hey buddy's it ain't your band .. sorry, but if you are so convinced of this thsn form you own band and if you want to play Ryan Adams songs you can ensure he'll be there, that is if he'll show up.
monster setlist.
i second the complaint about the ryan adams tunes. who wants to hear new material? i dont want this band to stretch out - i just want to get my groove on to stuff that phil has played hundreds if not thousands of times throughout his lifetime. thats the ticket.
This was such an amazing show..just got back home..wow! 2nd set was stellar. Can't wait to hear it again.
Oh, god...Strawberry Fields!?! NOT another Beatles cover! Jeeze, I'd want my money back.
dear phil-
it is very rainy down here in florida, and i know that the cold wind is blowing in new york. i was wonderin, besides the fact that i need my head examined for missing these shows, if perhaps, just to make things even a tiny bit better, you might release a little dsbd of tonight's show. thanks so very much.
i'll try not to check every hour.

Dead Phil-
The weather is REALLY nice in NorCal. Low-mid 70s, not a cloud in sight, just absolutely beautiful.
...What?
jesus, i'm a bit drunk but i want to say a huge FUCK YOU to all you ryan adams haters.
the songs are amazing. hes a great songwriter, and even amazing singers like Warren and Joan don't mind singing his great songs. God "Let It Ride" and "Bartering Lines" are great fucking songs. Listen to the originals, you asses. Ryan's great, and Joan AND WARREN do great versions of Ryan's songs.
Jesus, Phil wants to change things up. Hes 65 fucking years old, how much longer can he do Scarlet>Fires and Help>Slipknot>Franklins? I'd get bored if I were him. I have a feeling that he's only doing it to put his kids through college. Ryan is where he wants to go, but can't until Ryan calms down and the Lesh brothers are through college. Until then Phil will play Ryan songs cause they are brilliant songs. Hell, if Warren Haynes, a "special guest", agreed to play a Ryan song, then it must be good.
Hell, I still love you Ryan ADAMS
its up on the Zone Radio
tonight its working correctly

Thanks Rob...been real anxious here.
Hope you and yer lady are havin a blast.
show tonight: 1st set great, thank god the RA tune was kept short. 2nd set great, except for the RA tune.
here's the fact - RA tunes are a buzz kill. simple as that. it's not because he's RA, rather because who wants to hear a song from a nobody, any nobody? the crowd doesn't recognize the songs and really they aren't paying for that.
play some dead tunes, throw in some dylan or beatles covers, add some P+F songs to the mix and everybody is happy.
but please, phil, no more songs from any unknowns.
An incredible show...especially set 2...just got back and my mind is blown!
Really awesome to meet all the Zoners at pre-game
More tomorrow when I can think again...
Good night and it was a good night!
some more thoughts ...
i want larry to break out and go f'in crazy on some leads. i know the guy is a super solid player, as a big dylan fan i've seen him perform many a night. but, larry, spread your wings man. let loose, let it rip. i've seen you the past two nights only teasing us with your ability, and i'd just love you to showcase some of your chops and blow us all away.
just a fan of yours, -j
Phil is going to bring the hats that he can pull rabbits out of without the trick being stale, and I guess some of those hats belong to Ryan Adams lately. It's unfortunate that some aren't digging it, but it's still a free country, so far anyway.
Wasn't there (no music complaints here, I saw Hot Tuna earlier), but glad for those who are, even the complainers.

Who wrote Morning Dew?
No allmusic. Off the top of your head: Who wrote it?
Personally, I have not a thing against Ryan Adams or his music but I do often wonder why Phil has become so infatuated with him...maybe Phil sees what a lot of us aren't able to...who knows? I just wish that I could grab ahold of whatever it is that is so fascinating about RA...Never have we witnessed before Phil taking someone's music and playing it out quite like he does the music of Ryan Adams. He's even playing it when RA isn't in the house...I find it kinda strange but that's just me...Keep on rockin' Phil!
Bonnie Dobson wrote Morning Dew...eddieboy(Bruce Weber)
Long live Phil Lesh! Thanks for the pictures and songlists folks!
Robert Hunter was an "unknown" when the Dead first started doing his tunes...
Long live Phil Lesh doin Ryan Adams songs
wow, what a fuckin' set list....can't wait til the tower shows....
>>>I have a feeling that he's only doing it to put his kids through college.
Are you serious? I think Phil is out there to have fun these days.
Phil has a great eye for talent
Ryan Adams is the best songwriter from his generation
In Phil we trust!!!
Once again folks; Phil is not going to play what you want to hear but what he wants to play. He obviously loves Ryan's tunes and they are going to show up in the sets. How anyone can complain about this show is beyond me.
one of the best Phil shows I have ever seen over the past 30 years.
as Phil said last night, 'thanks, good night, we'll be back tomorowm you never know what might happen".
if you aren't diggin' that, well.....
how does anyone find all this time and energy to worry about RA.
let it go. you will feel better than spreading if you spread negativism.
Gee, maybe they should cover some Ratdog tunes. THAT'S when I stop going. But I wouldn't use this forum to complain over and over about the same thing.
Can't wait for "what might happen" next.
how about some My Morning Jacket covers. Those guys write some nice songs, and they have adopted NYC as their base.
Thank you PHIL!!! Please bring Warren to Philly with ya!!!!!! I'll buy an extra Sunday ticket if you do!
I want to see a Phil show where he does an entire set of Ryan Adams songs, god that guy is a great songwriter....
Back from the Beacon. I'm so glad this was one hot show, since I had to drive home in a blizzard. China/Rider opener set the tone for the evening. One of the strongest first sets I've ever heard. This band really clicks--and it's only the 2nd night! Exceptional song transitions with original arrangements. Very tight jams. The Uncle john's band was probably the highlight of the set (after the China/Rider). Rob was on fire! I enjoyed Warren, but missed Sless in the 2nd set. The 3 song encore really put the "icing on the cake".
I for one enjoyed the 2 Ryan Adams covers.
If the snow ever stops, it's back to the Beacon tonight.
I heard a rumor that Ryan Adam's is Phil's illegitimate son via Mountain Girl? Maybe that's why he plays his stuff so much, and makes him feel "close to Jerry"
Oops, sorry, no rumors here!
Glad to see Warren in the mix. Long live the Q!
don't write that crap in the review section - they'll delete the whole thread
great show!
just got back to Maryland with knee high snow - good night for Amtrak!
no energy for real review but that was a blast!
btw, maybe Barry will be out west next weekend and that's why he sat out the 2nd set. He sounded great and not in the way for the encores. Perhaps that incredible 2nd set was just a rehearsal for 2/17???
Taperrob, do you put this up for download anywhere? If so where can I find it?
Thank you...
Nice mini-reviews, but I'd love to read some more in depth analysis of the show. . . Looks like a great show! How was the CAUTION? Joan singing that one? Please tell! A full Warren Haynes si-in?!?!?!? Sweet. . .
Hope everyone made it home safely!
and, you put a CD together of all the RA tunes Phil has played (Joan or Ryan singin') and you got one great CD.
Glad there wasn't a discussion board when Samba, Picasso, Easy A where first played.
RA is a great songwriter!
Joan just freaking "owns" that Ryan Adams tune "Magnolia Mountain".
Don't be hatin'.
Boy do we have a fair amount of snow going on, this morning.
So, maybe Chris will stop by tonight?
well, I made a choice between Friday and Saturday, and apparently chose poorly. I had a great time Friday and it was a nice solid show, BUT it looks like last night was A MONSTER. Can't wait to hear it (although it's not working through the live 365 stream :o( )
Hope everyone got home safe, and all the Phreaks who stayed in the city don't get lost in a snowdrift today ;o)
enough with the ryan adams bullshit people!!!!!! jesus, get a fucking grip on yourselves.
the fact of the matter was that this was an amazing, AMAZING show. The first set was fantastic. the wheel had a cool, loping sort of feel to it and it was a blistering cumberland. UJB was sweet with larry playing mandolin.
and then warren tore the freakin roof off. he just stepped right in like the Q was last week. Larry was awesome, did some great stuff during caution. And man you could feel big brown rattling your bones. they didn't stop till about 12:45 and out the doors onto a snow-covered Broadway. You couldn't ask for more.
great on paper, all i can say is that it was a 100 times better than that in person. just a kick ass rock and roll show. I can't believe I still have two more shows to go.
SOUNDBOARD PLEASE!!!!!
You'll stop going if they cover a RatDog song? Why, their originals are better than RA's. I'd love to hear this band tear up a couple RatDog tunes.
i'll add that they had their shit together on the jams last night as well. very tight.
FYI: Warren has worked with Larry before on Charles Lyonhart's album "Down To The Hard Line".

Joy
I'm so happy for those 2900 freaks who got to see last nights show! By the reviews, it sounds like one we'll be talking about in years to come.
Although it seems wasted space to give credence to all the Adams-bashers out there, let's get a little perpective, people (IMHO)!
The RA songs that have been played the last two nights are merely taking the place of any number of slower songs that would be played by any number of artists that Phil has played with over the years. Did people bitch about "My Favorite Things", or "Beautifully Broken" or "Into the Mystic". No. Granted they appealed to a wider audience, but I'm sure not every person knew them as they were listening to them. And, by the way, when RA sang his songs at Red Rocks in July, they were beautiful and the jams during them were great, even if I wasn't familiar with the material.
So how long will it take you bashers to get ALL OVER Joan when she starts singing some of her songs?
I'm so looking forward to Wed. night. 2000 miles seems like a walk down the block, and one well worth it.
PHIL ROCKS! and I'll see him play with anybody, anytime in any room. Bring it on!!!!!!!
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
I'm so fuckin' happy, I so fuckin' happy,
So that's how this bored goes, huh?
At the end of the that remarkable encore, Phil came back to the mic to intro Joan who was not on stage for the rap/band intros, Strawberry Fields or Comes A Time. He then told the Phans about the remaining NY shows, suggested we attend and said "you never know what will happen."
Another random thought - this set of friends has some great vocals/harmonies, even without Warren. With Warren, the four part harmonies throughout the second set were incredible - hope there's a soundboard to prove if I'm right or wrong.
The best post Q show ever!
it was definitely on a different level.
excellent song selection in the 1st set...
a smokin cumberland as always... Joan, man she is something else... Phil knows exactly what to use her for too.
the extra mike stand was there from the beginning of the show so it was kinda hard not to ponder and speculate all through the first set.
highlight of the 1st set IMO was the jam after the Wheel. I dont think its on the setlist, but it was something else, changing left and right, i dont recall the details right now, lol, but it definitely kicked ass.
and then there he is, I see Warren backstage and I know we are in for something special, and it was just that
just his presence onstage is sweet, and of course his vocals with joan's and rob's was a sublime thing.
the viola's were top notch, a smokin, sexy, sulty, H2H with Joan doing her thang, a ripping Bertha,
and also on the set list it says feedback>caution, but he broke out big brown and there was another really choice jam with big brown before the feedback..
and then once again Joan.... allll you neeeeeeeeeddddd is just a touch! of Warren's mojo hand!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!
very nice and powerful Fire and NFA, excellent way to close the show. (another love themed song, btw)
and then what else can you say about the encore aside from the fact that it was Strawberry>Comes a Time>Golden Road... it was out of this world to say the least.
gotta figure out the best way to get into the city for tonights show.... see ya'll there!
ok folks, good morning. a long time lurker, i'll throw my $0.02 into the mix after an epic experience last night. thoughts in no particular order:
- big picture: this band plays its music with a sense of reverence, and clearly wants to serve as a gateway not just to 'good times' but as a vehicle for achieving enlightenment, self realization, and getting into the NOW. phil is really a role model and someone i respect so much, because he has (re)dedicated his life to serving as a humorous, generous, open, committed channel to the sublime, and he's an example to me for that. he honors the roots of the music not by touching on the brittle cliches, but by engaging in the spirit of the music that got them started in the first place. this makes, for me, all the rest of the details about matters of taste, opinion, etc... and you know what they say about opinions.... - but i have a few, so one riff on the ryan adams songs, which i had never heard before: i thought the songs were moving and interesting, and extremely well played and appropriate. as above, it's all a matter of taste, but i was totally happy to see some fresh material thrown in there, it was all fully consistent with the spirit of the music for sure -- IMO!
- an observation about the warren-less band vs. with warren: it is an excellent band but it lacks a 'dangerous' presence, someone in there who can push the music out, up, through, whatever, into a new plane. the ensemble work was fantastic and it was undulating, deep music in the first set, but i thought that the warren set clearly took the music to another level through his enormous talent and capabilities. it's not a bad-good, better-worse kind of thing, just an observation. i happen to prefer that element of danger. haven't heard what the band sounded like with ryan adams, but his status as a controversial figure in the review boards makes me intrigued that he could be that kind of an 'x' factor, whatever his 'downsides' might be.
- rhythm: this was my first time seeing the band w/o molo in there. my general impression is that the band is not as ryhthmically 'dextrous' as they were previously - a learning curve may be happening with the new guy, but i didn't sense the same level of snakiness and rhythmic dynamism. i'd like to see a drummer/percussionist who can really push phil. he may in fact, but this is just my impression.
- joan: love her voice, love her stage presence. the sassy diva energy is welcome - she obviously is super respectful of the deep groove, loves her moments to bust out and bring the boys back to earth, and gives a whole vocal presence to the band that is so good. vocals, esp second set, were a real high point yesterday.
- incredible high moments in the music: probably 10 or so medium to major crescendos in the second set - so much stream of consciousness that it is hard to pick it all out. notables include - absolutely shredded hard to handle, with an over the top, gunslinger solo by warren; really high energy bertha (another comment on that below) with outstanding vocals; warren's solo in 'fire'; the tribal insanity of caution/feedback.
- small note on bertha: the energy was fantastic, but i think they didn't quite hit the chorus part, which brings a soulful almost mournful tinge to the song, with the same sense of soul as i like to hear. this true of the solo as well. such a minor point in the big picture, but these things are processed at multiple levels.
- query on the crowd dynamics: i am guessing 40% 'boozed,' 50% 'smokey,' and 10% 'other,' with of course plenty of overlap there. is this what folks also sensed? just interested in impressions, as i spent a lot of time at set break trying to breathe in the whole vibe of the room and of course these things are usually 100% subjective despite all attempts at seeing 'reality' 'as it is.'
bottom line for me: what a gift that we can all participate in this with such a beloved conjurer. i hope all of us can build in our lives the capability to serve, honor, and act as a "Beacon" for the ever-unfolding now in the way that Phil does for us. PEACE!
helluva first post JT, glad to hear your $.02!!!
Wonder why 2 threads were started for last nights show reviews. I guess it deserved it. Great reviews on each of the threads. Nice review JT... totally hear you on the Warren "dangerous factor". That is so true. A great point.
Thanks to JT for a great post. Love that positive energy. Keep it coming people!!!!!
I remember thinking midway thru the first set, "I think I get what Phil's trying to do with this lineup vs. last fall's; better 3 part harmonies, more of a 'by the books drummer', slightly warmer sound."
Then I thought that, that being said, this band will never break out Big Brown and do
Feedback/Caution.

>>poll the audience at the show and ask them who they would like to hear phil cover -
If he did poll hte audience, most of them would want to hear just what they heard a thousand times before. Ryan Adams is a better songwriter than Warren may be why htey don't cover more Warren tunes (although I can htink of several Mule tunes that P&F played over the years). Peronally, I'd rather hear almost anything than another Beatles cover, but I ain't onstange.
As Jerry Garcia said when asked why GD covered "Johnny B. Goode" "It's traditional to cover a guys's songs if you like his music." Maybe Phil and the gang like Ryan's music.
Ok, briefly..
1st set had a great setlist, ok playing... Wheel>Let It Ride, Cumberland was very hot.
2nd set absolutlely blew the roof off. SO freakin' smokin!!! I'm just aghast at how sick it was. Just the encore (3rd set?)would've made the show.
Ryan Adams is the best songwriter since Garcia/Hunter. We are very lucky that he's given Phil carte blance on covering these gems.
Bzl.
Great post JT. thanks. Send another after tonight's show if you go.
Here is my review. The first set was incredible. The second set had the addition of Warren which was a nice treat since I've only seen him play with Phil twice in the last year and a half. The other appearance was at Vegoose. On the downside, the jams went nowhere in the 2nd set. So we got the addition of great vocals for the second set but in the process, Barry sits out and the jams basically went nowhere. If you like a very rythm heavy sound with blues based leads and very little direction then the second set was for you. Compare set one and set two and tell me which one had the better jams.
The encore was great because Barry was back on stage again giving the band some much needed direction. It was a fun night last night, but a lot of the energy got sucked out of the second set when neither Warren or Larry seemed capable of taking the jams out there.
I'm sure people disagree, but the entire first set had people on their feet doing the neutron dance. Set two had a bunch of people sitting for stretches, myself included. I can't figure why Phil would have Barry backstage when he added the perfect element during the encore while Warren was onstage as well.
Anyway, I got the sence that last night's show was about a lot of the bs that happens on this website reguarding lineups and personel. Last night he gave all the Warren fans a chance to see him in the lineup without Barry. This way you could clearly see what each guy brings to the table. The encore for me was Phil sending a message that in the end, its nothing to get hung about. It's just a band. There are many different ways to interpret this music. The first set and encore had the goods in terms of what I look for in Dead music.
During the Fire on the Mountain I was thinking to myself how badly the song needed Barry up there to really take it away. Larry ripped a nice solo, but it felt a bit empty compared to any of the Fires from last Fall. The cumberland in the first set achieved several levels of lift off. Overall I was very happy to be there as it was easily one of the most unique Phil shows I've ever seen. This run is gonna be chock full of surprises. I really missed Barry a lot during the second set though. I hope he stays out there the whole time tonight. Peace.
I am bumming. I had (still have since they weren't used) tickets for this show, but because of the weather and other factors necessary to get to the show and back home, I skipped it. Bad move I gather after reading the reviews and seeing the setlist. :-(
I had great seats also, 9th row right center two seats off the aisle. Why did it have to snow, Why?
Glad it was a great show, and it isn't like I saw my share of great Phil shows since he started with Phil and Friends, but I hate to miss the great ones especially when I had tickets.
Until next time....
There will be more shows Mike!
Pete, I am listing to fire right now and I agree with you about Barry.
.
>>>I can't figure why Phil would have Barry backstage
i can't either. i wasn't there, but it seems to me there would be plenty of room for all three, especially with Sless on pedal steel or larry on fiddle. The 3 guitar line-up with Kimock, Sless and Nelson worked great
>>>big picture: this band plays its music with a sense of reverence, and clearly wants to serve as a gateway not just to 'good times' but as a vehicle for achieving enlightenment, self realization, and getting into the NOW. phil is really a role model and someone i respect so much, because he has (re)dedicated his life to serving as a humorous, generous, open, committed channel to the sublime, and he's an example to me for that. he honors the roots of the music not by touching on the brittle cliches, but by engaging in the spirit of the music that got them started in the first place<<<
Well done JT!! The fact that the show was so insanely good that it envoked you to post such a gook 1st post is a testament to what I was *bleeding* about last night...Phil at the Beacon always continues to INSPIRE AND IMPRESS
I'm going to rush this due to the fact that I need to get my snowy trek into the city started.
For now I will say that the run officially started after the 2nd verse in the Friday night Playin'. The band was starting to pick it up when Phil broke down in the 70's style bad ass stance where he holds the Modulus way out to his left...we where OFF and running
Folks who think the Love the One Your With wasn't about Phil missing Jerry need to think again
as for last night...where to start?!
Had the same exact seats way down low in the center of the lower balc flanked by many of my favorite characters and some real cool out of towners
*Phils fingers where moving so quick they looked like digital bars from an equalizer falling up and down
*Very interesting speed changes during the 1st set. From the slow Rider adorned with quick pick ups to the Wheel which may well be one of the finest tunes with regards to the nuances of speed change
*Sipe kicks ass and it was a lot of fun watching Phil help him surge, the Friday Slip being my favorite example
*That said it was weird but cool to see the tractor beam bus driving current running across stage from Phil to Rob rather from in the usaul power circle of Molo/Lesh
*Phil stepping up for his verse in Cumberland is flat out as fun as it gets
*Rob, Joan and Phil sound amazing singing together...Warren made the harmonizing even better
*Joan looked sexy ass hell in her white top and blue jeans. Brick had the line of the night while Joan was strutting her stuff during H2H "all the dudes in here are too stoned to cheer". I think her stage presense in "The Dead" was a bit off due to the fact that The Dead were a litte off. I loved watching her dance last night, even during the far out jams she was so confindent and cool up there that it was pretty hard not to imagine what she may well be like in the sack
*Larry Campbell is patient, awesome, looks like Matt Dylan only a hundred times cooler and dosed with a far out 70's space guitar flow
*Warren was awesome but I was sad when I looked down and saw my main man Barry Sless sitting in a chair a few feet behind Rob B during the first part to the 2nd set
*Rob B never stops jamming and I love him for it
*IT WAS SO COOL LOOKING DOWN ON THE BACK RIGHT SIDE OF THE STAGE SEEING THE BIG WHITE CASE WITH "GRATEFUL DEAD" AND A STEAL YOUR FACE ON THE FRONT. WHEN I POINTED IT OUT TO SCHMEGG AND SKADS, DURING NOT FADE, THAT IT MUST BIG BROWNS HOME SCHMEGGS SAYS..."OHH YEAH (LOOKS DOWN LAUGHS) BIG BROWNS RIDE"

Why not tinker with the line-up whenever the opportunity presents itself? I loved seeing Warren and Larry play a set together for the first time. We got Warren with Barry & Jimmy at Vegoose... that was also great. The free flowing exploratory jams that were created last night would not have happened the way they did with a 3rd guitar. I would imagine this is why Warren didn't come out set one. It was like getting 2 different shows in one. 3 if you count the encore w/ Barry. Basically we got a liitle bit of everything. If you like more of the straight forward, just like the original versions of songs and jams you may not dig the exploration that happened set 2... that's fine... and so you had the 1st set. I always welcome Phil taking the chances he does and mixing it up! Maybe we get three guitars tonight... It's like a box of chocolates....
Man that was memorable. Makes me realize how great Warren was with Phil. He knows how to bring it home. His timing is superb. Just a great fucking musician, unselfish and professional. Awesome.
There's not much I can add to the comments. I will say that I thought Larry came out of his shell a bit. By far the most interesting and powerful jamming that I've seen from him in the three P&F with LC gigs I have seen.
Joan just kicked ass. Man when she was prowling the stage I felt like this is a real rock and roll concert, not just a bunch of guys playing old songs. It felt fresh.
Bartending lineng Lines was a great choice. I know people want less RA songs but this one sounded so otherworldly with this set of musicians.
I was sober for the show and it sounded fantastic to me, even the first set, especially Cumberland.
The RA tunes flowed beautifully with the setlist phellas...
>>>Maybe we get three guitars tonight...
good call!
oh well, my mistake. From looking at the PZ's setlist, I thought Trey, Larry and Barry all played the whole show last night, but apparently Sless got benched again.
I have found the shows more impressive 'straight', relatively speaking, of course!!!!!!!!!!
I am lovin' this phil

FEEDBACK
sure warren made this show super sick but i also thought the first set sounded excellent although the song selection was pretty standard this show was definatly a 9.5 outta 10, better song selection like a cold rain opener would have made it a perfect 10. 17 more hours till next set starts i better rest up!
Oh my... just made it home in this freakin blizzard...
This show was just plain sick...off the hook. Its hard to explain... almost like 2 shows in one. The interplay between Phil and Warren was just incredible... The Viola weave was intense... show started w/ a Scarlet tease jam and right to china>rider then they jammed back into that scarlet groove they started.
I mean China> Rider> Scarlet> Wheel! how sick is that!. I like the way Phil started with the scarlet jam 1st set and ended the loop 2nd set w/ an intense fire... so sweet. The 1st set was so nice.... but there was a feeling something special was about to happen as the snow came down outside the warm Beacon party.
At the break they started to set up Warren's gear. He had been the Beacon from the start and his mike was up there 1st set, but he hung back. They had a beautiful White Gibson on stage set up and I knew the 2nd set would be special. The Shakedown was amazing. No Sless at all...it went from the Larry & Barry show..to the Warren & Phil masterpiece very quickly. This was going to be no ordinary set as the Jams quickly launched into Viola and it was clear that this set would be the canvas that viola weaves through. Im not exactly sure if I can explain the jam... from melodic to spacey to jazzy to feedback to Joan rapping to at one point a jam that was a Peter Frampton'esque "do you feel like you do" guitar jam...no vocal but pure bliss... then of course back to Viola... Hard to Handle, and a smokin Bertha complete w/ the requisite Phil Bombs and all.... then of course...chubba chubba... back to Viola > a beautiful RA song I never heard...it fit very well...and you could tell it was rehearsed because the harmonies were so sweet.. then ... one of the most highly rockin and intense Fire on the Mountains I've heard. Larry had a smoking lead at this point... of course back to Warren & Phil for improve jams that were epic... into the friendly beat to NFA... I mean the set was so spacey and gorgeously intense that the NFA was a welcome rocker. w/ the crowd doing the clap "audience participation time" NFA claps... we wondered want could top that.
Well..we were not disappointed... after the Phil Raps... Barry came out on the peddle.
Strawberry Fields Forever... oh my...so sweet...so perfect - that would have been enough but then to hear Warren soulfully belt out Comes A Time...!
... so much soul & feeling... but you could tell as Phil would speak to his crew through his mike that they were not done... Golden Road!!! I mean... pinch me people!.. I was at the Joint in Vegas for the 3 set...ending at 6AM show.. but really...Strawberry Fields > Comes A Time > Golden Road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Phil for not taking the easy way and for taking these musical chances that sometimes create magic.
You created magic for me tonight. I thank you for that...
ok... more logs on the fire... I'll be back Wed.... Don't be surprised to see many different combos at different times this tour... this is magic... let it sink in.
I saw a girl bear footing along... dancin & singin and carryin on.....on Broadway & 74th street in 6" of snow.
Peace...I need to get my drunk ass to bed!
Last night made the Friday night show look like a practice session. This band is frightenly good and they're only getting started.
*Note to Willy Rooter*
Dude - 1set was only "standard"?! I've have never NEVER see a better china cat > rider (and to open the show no less); you'll get the Cold Rain & Snow tonight. This show was an 11 all the way.
Lastly, did anyone else hear the New Speedway tease before the Wheel? Now that would have been sick!!!!!!!!
Nice review Rich! Looks amazing.
While it was a remarkable show, mention should also be made of the ticket market outside. Although we understood this to be a sold out show, there were tickets at the door, and lots on the street; the going price at showtime was around $20, and giveaways were happening. Maybe this was due to saturation, maybe weather, maybe fear of Chris on vocals, but whatever the reason, the ticketless should not have any problem getting in to the balance of this run. And this is not a run to miss.
Keith, I was at friday, and I think it WAS a practice.
Yeah, I heard the New Speedway Boogie tease...awesome!
Great review RichL. Thanks. Keith, they are streaming that sarlet>wheel jam right now. I see what you mean. Sort of hints that way, (also has a march-like feel as if it could roll into box)
Great stuff
Makes me wish I were back home in NY
did anyone else hear that kinda pink floydish jam after shakedown and before they started Viola or am i just crazy?
I agree that the show was phenomenal
I Love warren too, but I have been so impressed with Sless that I feel he should still be up there jammin' Love the jammin between Cambell and Warren, and Phil's AMp sound
Here's the mindfuck for me this morning
...Due to the snow, and coming from CT, we left at midnight during the NFA, and just made the 1:12 to New Haven
Of course we missed the encores...
Good move though because we arrived in New Haven at 3am, and driving from New Haven train station to my home was a nightmare.
By the way, I do not believe that was Speedway Boogie...I called it as Nobody's Fault But Mine, possible Spoonful...New potato Caboose and Mountains of the Moon were teased from beginning to the end, at least, my end....
And if you are wondering, any of you, why I don't seem so bummed out about missing the tremendous encore, well, you see, my dumb ass, so messed up after the US BLUES in Landover, left for the lot and missed that RIPPLE back in the late 80's...xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
However, out of 300+ shows, i have been rewarded with many firsts...Unbroken Chain and Branford Marsalis' Nassau run...Nice job Phil, and we will see you guys Tuesday night.
Dont know if you were aware Robert but they added 1:50am train from GCT to New Haven. This will allow you to catch any late ending shows and make the last train out. I also had quite the adventure driving from my station to my house in the blizzard. We are still getting dumped on almost 2 feet so far. I'm still smilin thinkin of that show last night. Blew my mind!
>>>did anyone else hear that kinda pink floydish jam
sounded like another brick in the wall,, I heard it on friday night too!!!!
Holy Shit!!! WARREN!!!!
HOLY SHIT!!! Rob in a tie????
Holy SHIT!!! Joan looking HOT! (Sorry -- I'm a guy)
(Stevie Wonder, Isn't she lovely? comes on as I type this, so I figured it was okay)
just mind blowing! i was vibrating all night... the energy was spectacular and that 2nd set! holy crap! i wish i could go to more nights, i don't want to miss a thing!
great review, rich... well said.
i still have songs in my head as i prep up to tackle the truckloads of snow in my driveway.
thank goodness for that later 1:50 train
everybody enjoy the rest of the run! i've got to find a way to go to more!
>>>did anyone else hear that kinda pink floydish jam
>>>sounded like another brick in the wall,, I heard it on friday night too!!!!
I kept hearing Shine on you Crazy Diamond and Mtns of the Moon teases all night. Enjoy tonight. I may go at the last minute.
that was fuckin obscene~
thanks
Warren !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOLY SHIT !!!
with SLESS!!
thought china>rider fell apart at the end-- the china jam didnt touch wallingford ct 12/6 and rider was very slow and weird its like it never really got going i think they were waiting too long for joan to come out on stage or something maybe sipe doesnt know the jam too well
I dont think it can get better then that without Jerry!! Man! WOW! WOW!
>>>so messed up after the US BLUES in Landover, left for the lot and missed that RIPPLE back in the late 80's...xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ouch. I did the same. It was after a 'Sat Nite'. I ran out to sell shirts and ended up rippleless as well. So it goes
BTW, I am loving this stream from last night. IMHO it's WAY better than the last show I saw, NYE
Thank you Phil and wonderful band!!! As always, I had an awesome time what a mind blowing show!! 1st set was great and then... Warren for what I feel, was one of the best sets of music I've ever seen!!! We were sitting w/ a girl who was at her 1st show!! Safe to say she's hooked now. Can't wait till next Sat. at Hammerstien!!!
by the way... I think Phil is having a gr8 laugh at all you so called music fans out there rippin' on RA. Phil's gonna keep playing exactly WHAT HE WANTS, NOT WHAT YOU WANT!! If you don't like it there are plenty of boring bands out there who just keep recycling thier old music over and over. I love Phil for the choices and chances he takes!! If you don't like it don't go to the show and bring all your negative vibes.
best shakedown i've ever heard. i can't believe it. and that uncle john's band was just precious. wow.
Can't believe I missed this show. I had tickets too, but the weather (and other logistical factors) kept me at home. Darn. :-(
NIIIIIIIIIIICE!
Dayum whatta setlist.
Lucky bahstihd's.
diggin the hard to handle>freakyspaceysweetjam>viola
right now!
PHIL IS THUMPIN'
THANKS TRob for puttin it out there!
Hey Pressypart of the reason you got a good show is because Ryan wasn't there-get a grip.
Enjoy the shows as they a re makeup performances for the July and December Ryan non-shows.
If I had known, I would have skipped NYE and come back home for this run.
Damn
I don't know.... it seems to me that everybody wants so dearly for Warren to bring such a magic to the set - -but I, for one, really felt that the highlights of this show were in Set I where Cumberland rocked and Wheel smoked. Warren can really bring the vibe to a sleepy pace -- and Phil lets it go there -- which I guess Phil digs -- but I think it gets a little tiresome. Sorry.
The harmonies are "getting there" and Larry, IMHO, seems under-utililized.
As for Strawberry Fields -- I mean, I love the sentiment, I "get it" being just a few blocks from the Dakota -- but covering Strawberry Fields -- an absolutely studio masterpiece -- you better bring a little something extra to the table -- and I didn't get that feel. Rob's kooky, Welnick-esque effects were seemed trite.
Unlike the masses, I felt Friday night (with the kicking West LA) had a much better "upbeat" feel and I left wanting more. Last night -- I was done before it was over.
Killer Show! Phil was very happy, so much to say I really cant sum it all up, But Big Brown was out for a couple songs with killer feedback!! Warren was great! Joan was nice. Barraco did a nice job too! Larry and Sless were monsters.I miss MOLO but Sipe did well. Very lucky to have caught this show...Ride back to Boston was a nightmare took about 8hrs-9hrs. with a sleep stop for about 2hrs.Record snow in NYC!
Phil Delivers. Catch him if you can.
Hey V.L. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I agree with your sentiments completely. I thought Firday was a more upbeat and cohesive show and the jams actually went places. I also thought that the first set on Saturday night was smoking and it would have continued to do so had Barry stayed out for the second set. Peace.
nice surprise that Warren showed up, and real nice encores to be sure, but Saturday's show largely didn't measure up to Friday or much of the Fall 05 tour IMO
to each his very own to be sure
Nice reviews! Thanks for posting and the photos are great! And to think, that's only the second night of the tour. . .
"You know it's gonna get stranger. . ."
I thought for sure they were going into New Speedway Boogie, but alas it wasn't meant to be.
I have to totally disagree with the gents above who didn't groove to the Warren appearance. I've seen a lot of P&F shows as I'm sure those guys have too, but I will say from my experience that that second set had magic. To me rock and roll is a lot about soul, passion, and spontaneity and that set had more of it in 5 minutes than the previous three sets combined.
This thread is inspiring me to bust out some Q.
4/20/1
yeah, baby! WARREN!
All I can say is I can't put it into words...
First set: not as good as the list.
Second set: just unfrickinbelievably amazing. I agree with all the superlatives above. Intense, beautiful, wild, perfect... Perhaps the best Phil set I've ever heard (in about 40? shows)
Saturday's show (the only Beacon show I was lucky enough to attend) was perhaps the best Phil & Friends performance I've ever seen (out of 26). It rivals my previous favorite, Stabler Arena in PA (the "night of 1000 stars"), and makes me look forward to the Tower Theatre with great anticipation. Thank you Phil and the amazing community that surrounds you!!

I'm with VL and some of the folks above.
I was one of those lucky people that went Saturday night, too. Just an amazing show. I was at Vegoose for Phil at the Joint and that was sick, but I think this even beat that. I also happened to be lucky enough to see Mule 2 nights before and became a huge Mule and Warren fan, so to have Warren come out after an amazing first set, I felt like my heart would burst out of my chest! These guys are masters, and the jams were at such a high level that it was mind blowing. Just watching Phil and Warren and Larry interact...it was so intuitive and natural and easy for them it was sick. I couldn't stop smiling!! Everyone was so on, and the crowd was feeling it....amazing energy in the room. Anyway, I can't imagine a more perfect 2 sets, and being a Beatles fan forever, Strawberry Fields blew me away! Everytime I say I can't imagine a more perfect time, though, these guys come back and do it again and even better. How is that possible??!!
Oh, Joan>> where fore art, thou??
Heart-Sick........
over, Joan>>>>>>>>
i haven't seen this show posted on etree yet...
i'm wondering why? all the other nights seem to be.
i can't wait to hear it all over again... this show has been dancing through my head for a week now!
It is at: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=22906
Just finished downloading and really hope the name of the folder is a typo: PAF2005-02-11_ak43.flac16.torrent (2005-02-11)!!!
I haven't listened to it but the set list makes it appear that way.
I don't have a bt.etree password or I would let the taper know of his typo. Someone please let him know or eventually this is going to a problem in the trading community.
check it out at
