Looking Forward to a grate show like last Saturday!
Weather channel says that at 6PM it will feel like 12 degrees F. Anyplace to put jackets on floor?
http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/USNY0996?from=search
Thread above says they have a coatcheck.
Another question- can you go up to the mezzanine with a floor ticket?
no access to any other section besides what your ticket states...floor and mezz are different stairway entrances...
mezz tix for sunday were still available on fri so I would highly suggest getting mezz tix before they are gone- floor is HUGE aned will oversell...only 2 bars and bathrooms for the entire floor- whereas in the mezzes you have about an 1/8 of the people with easier access to drinks and toilets.
They search you good going in and are like hawks on a normal night- they'll even kick out kids for dancing at a Beck show. If everyones doing what they are doing then its hard to throw out an entire concert- just be careful and mindful and you will fly through no sweat. I don't understand why Phil would play a venue like this- the Crowes did it also- The Beacon is far superior and comfortable-but hey, If you gotta get your Phil on, you gotta get it on. I've been to this venue a good 20 times. I am cautious but go in with a good headspace and let the good time srll. VERY PSYCHED FOR THE NEXT 2 NIGHTS!
LET'S HOPE FOR AN ALLIGATOR TONIGHT- Throw in a Tomorrow Never Knows and I'll be in heaven. See you tonight!!!!!
oh stop making posts that just arent true
hammerstein was a smokefest last night
there is a light frisk at the door
the floor IS OVERCROWDED
so dont let the last poser scare you
its just like any venue
there are tix avail for tonight, call ticky master , i just got one.
no hassles whatsoever getting inif you go before 7:40 . if you are gonna try and sneak anywhere strive for upstairs there was plenty of space to sit to chill to dance to get a drink to smoke to go to the bathroom...floor looked like hell way too packed. closer to front i think will jam youin even tighter. security was not an issue inside th ejoint from what i experienced. no hassles. sound was great up top too.can hear it loud and clear by the bar whenyouneed your space to chill also....have fun
"there are tix avail for tonight, call ticky master , i just got one."
promoter should be shot and phil should be ashamed...good luck if you're bringing someone who's not a dead fan, hope they like being packed in like sardines
Hey All:
Banged up my ankle yesterday and wanted to know what time I need to be in the building in order to get a seat in the Mezz. Moving around gingerly so any advice would be appreciated....KGB
looked like plenty of open seats when i was watching from the floor around 7:00
Anyone know about taking the train from new jersey on satyrday's. i can't seem to find any info on their website. i think it might be fun to take the rails in.
The trains are easy. Almost all NJ Transit Trains trains go to the new Secaucus Transfer Station. You get off there and it is one direct stop from there. Make sure you are looking at NJTransit.com for Sat & Sunday. Weekday & Weekend scheds are very different...KGB
PS Also check what time the last train is. Sometimes it is not as late as Phil plays
floor was way overcrowded last night. If you are up close it is hard to get to and from the bar or bathroom. Other than that, wait at bar/bathroom was short. Show started at around 8:30. Long line to get in at 7. Short line at 7:40. Mez definately looked better that floor. There was coat check. I stuck mine in between the bars of a security barrier.
Thanks!! I'm gonna check now.
Bummer!! No trains on North Pascak Valley line on Sat. or Sun.
You have to take the train from the main line (such as Ridgewood). Also, the reason the floor at Hammerstein in so packed is that many of the people with seats upstairs choose to stay on the floor. When they sell the tickets they assume incorrectly that the people with seats are going to go to them. If they did there would not be an overcrowding problem. So, those of you who want to shoot the promoter should blame the ticketholders who choose to not go to their upstairs seats and overcrowd the floor. The one thing I would do if I was the promoter would be to make the upstairs available to the floor ticketholders. It should be all GA.
Yes, it should be all GA...
But I don't know, last night they had some pretty clearly defined security checkpoints to prevent people going from one section to the other....no way that many people came from up above...there were people standing shoulder to shoulder all the way back by the bars under the roof where they leave the lights ons...the place just has a bad layout in the back
They don't come from up above. They just never go upstairs. But you're right about the back of the place having a bad layout.
how do they get on the floor in the first place? seemed you had to go where your ticket said right at the door
I'm thinking of slipping security a 20 to let me up right in the begiinng
does anybody know if I can get in with my taping bag if I do not have a floor ticket. Or should I just leave my bag at home.
no taping on floor! 1st mezzanine...
Did anyone go to the show at BB Kings?
whats the deal with all this complaning about it being crowded? that was like any floor scene ive ever been to. In fact the last half of the second set the floor was half empty. So im sure all you complainers loved that. just chill out and enjoy the show.
thanks for the advice zen master
Re-listening to last Sat and Sunday now and I just cant understand why Barry and Larry are soooo much lower in the mix with the set line up than Trey and Warren were Sunday and Sat..... the comparison is striking - way too little Barry and almost no Larry in the mix - NE1 else notice that on this run so far ???? Still cant wait for the next 2 - going to be a huge finish in NYC.... just hae a hunch.
they always oversell the floor at the Hammerstein- every show I've ever been there- If you have a Mezz 1 or 2 ticket you can't get onto the floor and vice versa- there's 2 or 3 check points- trust me.
who was playing at bbkings?
Mark - I thought Larry was well mixed last saturday, warren and trey just play harder and louder, larry is more about placement
Mark Roth - did you say - relistening to Saturday?
Does that mean you have a recording of last Saturday? If so, will it be torrented? Lots of people are dying to here last Saturday's show with Warren. Everything else has been torrented thus far.
Thanks.
Ben
We got no chance in losing tonight...??
warning to all...
security confiscated a bag of mushrooms from a friend of mine last night, he was cool, apologized, said he'd get rid of them, and she (the guard) started giving him shit, within earshot of the police...

Help/Slip/something/Slip/Franklins was incredible, really blows the Trey show version out of the water, Larry had the funkiest chicken scratch going the entire, then leveled the house with the sickest solo (also on Death Don't Have No Mercy)...I think this is when Joan did the giddie up cowboy dance across the stage...energy in the house sky high...entire band was top notch, but this was LC's night (and Joan's)
great sound and loud
excellent show
Just Got back...awesome show....much better then last nights. First set was very country and bluesy highlighted by the the weight, peggy o, a jam with jone on drums, great viola, and ended with a rockin bertha. Second set was just absolutly unreal. Best st stephen ive heard in a while, great 11, and a solid New speedway. space was good, but last nights was better, bartering lines was sort of a throwaway and a great time to take a piss. Death dont was stunning. Joans vocals were spactacular and larrys solo was out of this world. Help slip frank was the highlight for me, a good 25 minutes of pure bliss. Def. surpassed last fridays, and from lsitening to the tape was better then the trey show too. Show ended with a nice good luvin and sent everyone home happy. The whole band was on tonite. Barry was in usual form but larry really stole the show for me. His solos on the 11, death and fraklins were so good. Another pleasent surpise was sipe. I thought he was much better then the previous two night i was and it really showed on Slipknot. Phil dropped bombs all night, barracos playing and vocal were strong as always, and joan sang with alot of soul. Such of fun night, definalty my favorite out of ast fridays, last nights and tonites. I wanna thank phil for giving me the opertunity to see these shows, and even tho i was never able to see jerry the music is really living on. Goodnight!!
I almost bagged out and didnt go to the show tonight. I am so glad I decided to go. Out of the 3 shows Ive seen this tour (Sat, Wed, Sat)this was the finest. The Wieght, Viola and Bertha were rockin in the first set. The entire 2nd set start to finish was freakin amazing. Larry stood out and shined tonight. His leads in Stephen, Eleven and Franklins have to be heard. I dont care if they did Help>slip>Franks 3 times... this was THE best yet...possibly the best Franklins I have ever seen. Joan is so soulful and sexy. Durring Good Lovin...I was completely captivated by her singing "Wanna know what I need?" !
Need sleep... great run for me....
Got my Phil!
torrent for this show is up here

Definitely gets my vote for best show of the run, so far.
REAL WAR MUSIC
are you kidding me rob... fucking unreal. thanks bro
Great Job Rob......
thanks for getting the torrent up so quickly.
Wow! Larry Campbell and Barry Sless may be the two best musicians I have ever seen anywhere! (And no I didn't see Jerry, but I have seen a lot in all kinds of genres).
Not too shabby, not bad at all. From what I'm hearing both Phil and Larry are a bit under the weather with awful head colds. Like true professionals, the show must go on. Hey guys, break a leg.
"From what I'm hearing both Phil and Larry are a bit under the weather with awful head colds."
This might explain why the show was over early? At least it seemed to end a little earlier than they have been...
Yeah it ended just in time for me not to be able to cross the street and catch my train. I don't mind missin' my train, but I enjoy missing it by a lot more. Hope that will happen tonight!
"All I know is something like a bird within him sang...
All I know he sang a little while and then flew off..."

Definite Jerry reference. Does Phil do this often? No one seemed to notice .
Thanks for the torrent Rob! Looks like an outstanding show.
What do you mean by Joan and Larrys last night? they done for the tour?
I didn't hear that. I hope its not true. Larry was unbelievable. But if it is who knows? I may be raving about someone totally different later tonight!
Maybe I am seeing things. Now I cant find where I read that post. Nevermind carry on.
The dog needs some OUT and I need my phone left in the car - so let me share something with this one cup of joe and smoke while I calibrate, before the pup and I get hit by what I assume are the STILL ARCTIC winds on streets of New York.
A#1 What I personally thought was lacking in some places on Friday - MOMENTUM - was a CENTRAL THEME tonight. It was like a joke in a way....yesterday I was complaining about deep space at 12:15....tonight we were LEAVING THE ARENA at 12:30.
I was in the second mezz which wasn't AWFUL - espesh since the night before I had NO ROOM TO MOVE really...and up THAR I was a happy Huckle - never cramped. I'm sure that big ol ROOF over BOTH balc cuts the sound hard, but since you can't really get out from under it - WHATEVER.
When I get up there - like a LOT OF STAIRS - I go to dump my coat in an empty seat....oh HEY MIKE. JOJO! PZ matrix leads me to a great lil hang.
First set begins with 2 new songs to tour....Fennario Fables. DIRE WOLF...whoopee. Gets ya dancin and smilin NO DOUBT.
Peggy-o!!! Stunning, and the harmony to close (I'm fairly certain the DEAD never pulled this shit off) was shockingly WOW...poignant. HOLY MOTHAFUCK HAR-MO-NEEEEEEE.
Birdsong - GREAT! the one I heard at the Beacon I missed due to "strangers stopping strangers" stuff, so I listen. BEAUTY. Phil does it so fine. His voice is really so heartfelt - IN TUNE....as a Phil devotee I LOVE WHEN HE ROLLLLLLLS the sweetness out. "combing back her auburn hair...." when did that hair color get switched up? Is it a nod to OUR Peggy-o? heh.
SOTOW. Oh, yeah, they did it Valentine's (odd choice that night but RIGHT I LOVVVVVED IT) - BUT WHO THE FREAK CARES!!! Rob tore it up hard hard hard. "GONE GONE GONE - but I don't worry....cause I'm SITtin on TOP of the WORLD" boom boom boom ba ba - full of gusto.
VIOLA. Now, I know people love Viola sandwiches and second set Viola jam monsters. But THANK GOD - that don't make or break Viola to me. I like a tight solid 3 verse Viola slay TOO. And - see - here's where me MISSING Sat and Wed Beacon gives me an advantage, in a way. I can't compare. I just...dig Viola. Now with Warren on Sat y'all got it with a Bertha in it - and WE got Miss B last night at the end. Happy to hear it as well, again, natural build energy fun. There's a funny beggin ya yet GIT THE FRICK OUT vibe to Bertha that's so slick cool contagious.
setbreak.
okay....lemme walk the dog....if I feel the cosmic wave I'll come back and give ya 2...IT WAS SUPER.
(But if God lets me sleep 2 more hours ya might have to wait.)
I saw the post.

I just hadn't heard it anywhere else. I am trying to search for Larry's tour dates right now, but can't find anything.
"but this was LC's night (and Joan's):"
I read this wrong, oops.
LOL. You made me read it wrong TOO. I was getting worried. I just fell in love with Larry's playing and thought it was going to be stolen away.
Last nights show was amazing. Just when you think it can't get any better, Phil continues to raise the bar.
I was 2nd row right in front of Rob last night and the sound was fantastic. Plently of room to groove down there, surprisingly.
First set , great song selection, beautiful Birdsong. Phil dropping big bass bombs all night. Sick Viola Lee>Bertha .
Joan really adds a great dimension to the band and her voice is phenomenla. Love to see her up there strutting around and belting it out.
Thank you Phil for a real good time.
Back tonight for the last show of the run.
the real thing
>>>And - see - here's where me MISSING Sat and Wed Beacon gives me an advantage, in a way. I can't compare. I just...dig Viola. Now with Warren on Sat y'all got it with a Bertha in it
Saw Sat Sandwich. LOVE ME SOME VIOLA SANDWICH! But first set, all three verses with only little JAM in between the 2nd and 3rd slices of bread.
YUM!
Got locked down in the front row end seat of the 1st Mezz. Obstructed views of LC and Phil, but I stood in front of both for AC. GLAD I was not on the floor...YUK! Had to lean over to see what Larry was playing. Thought Joan was GREAT on drums!
This band got Pipes.
SOME PEOPLE don't recall when the Grateful Dead had good vocals...acapella "He's Gone" or the "OHHHHHHHHHHs" behind Stella Blue. Not just a single voice (usually Jerry) on lead vocals. Last night Peggy O got traded off by verse and Joan NAILED her verse and so did Barraco and even Phil. And Larry Campbell ain't no slouch on the mike either...he only sang one or two songs though he added to the harmonies often.
I used to watch people WALK OUT of Greatful Dead shows when the vocals were off, but they were never so good as when the whole band was on with the pipes.
Last night this band nailed every lyric with style...and when they laid back is was because the audience was right there, right on time, singing louder than the band.
>>Last night this band nailed every lyric with style...and when they laid back is was because the audience was right there, right on time, singing louder than the band.

Soundboard? Way too early. BT of audience recording is here:

now maybe folks will stop looking for "special" guests to appear and reallize that these musicians are all you really need ~

Phil sang those lyrics with a big picture of Jerry behind him. After donor rap he lead us all in a "Happy Birthday" to Jerry.
He's been doing it since atleast '01.
>>>All I know he sang a little while and then flew off...
Yeah, he did it at the Friday Beacon show too.
As a first-timer to east coast Phil shows, one thing I noticed (which I've heard on audience tapes) was that there was a whole lot more of the "audience singing louder than the band" phenomenon than you get out west...Very enthusiastic, and very cool.
ok... so I went in thinking this show would be a big let down from the Beacon shows. It was pointed out fairly my buddy Brian that I was being a Beacon snob and that the Hammer was not a bad venue at all. Well I still think you cant compare the 2 at all, but I will admit the posts from the Friday shows sounded like horror stories, so I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to move around the floor generally with ease. Go for bathroom & beer runs and get back to our area with minimal hassles. A big key I thought was getting up as close as you can. Once you were closer to the stage there was room to boogie and great sight lines. We didn't go up close at first and It was tough to see threw all the tall folks, but during the break we moved about 3 rows deep and it made all the difference. Sound and mix was great. $7.00 Coronas w/ Lime all night, no top shelf booze, but doobies flowing every 5 mins or so
I'm looking forward to hearing the show again today (big ups RobC for getting it up lickidy split dude!) The one song I really wanted to hear at least once out of the 3 shows I saw was St. Stephen and I was calling for it to open the second set. They went into a really great Jam to open the set with out any hints of what was to come next, but I was so close to the stage I could hear Phil so clearly into the mike yell out "Stephen" only so the band and crew could hear with there monitors and I knew it was coming then. It didn't disappoint. Great Jamming here, the place was rocking...smiles everywhere..great way to kick off an energized set. I was hoping for an Eleven and we got a E'Heaven.... it sparkled as Larry just tore up some monster leads. The transition into New Speedway was smokin as was the song itself...you could see that they were hitting on all cylinders tonight and were lock step together and Phil was doing very minimal orchestrating this night. This was something that bothered me a bit about past nights. It seemed he let Larry. Barry, & Rob go and gave them there desired time for leads. The next spacey Jam was really sweet... Joan did some really nice vocal leads here...fit great, haunting, mesmerizing and flowing. Next up was I think is the best played of all the RA tunes by the band. This one is a keeper. I didn't think of it as a throwaway at all. Joan's vocals were so bluesy its a great song for her and the crunching blues guitar in this song just rocks... really loved it. The Death Don't have No Mercy...I started to go for another beer run, but the jams were so tight I couldnt leave just yet. Again Joan stood out here, but Larry's lead break was so good. Then on to Help Slip.. well I was a bit surprised to see it played again so soon, but was blown away by the power and tightness of this version. Here for the first time for me I was drawn to Jeff Sipes drumming. I must say it was spot on. His drum riffs and timing was just perfect. The Slipknot drumming was so stellar. Have a listen to the drum lead phils in Slipknot before the Franklins intro...it smokes. Then I thought they would insert a song other than Franklins here and probably close the loop with a Franklins encore. I was wrong again and they slid perfectly into Franklins. Barry started off with the sweet intro leads noodling beautifully into the begining of the song. Phil must be feeling a bit better. I really was glad to see him take all the vocal turns in the Franklins. But the highlight for me in this song was where Larry took it at the end. He brought this song to new heights. Listen to his jam at the end...It was just really that good. 2nd Set was the perfect length for me not too short not too long... just really very well played. After the Franklins... Phil was just grinning ear to ear... He went off high fives and hugs for all band members as if to congratulate them on being so on point tonight. The Good lovin encore was a great choice because the crowd was up from the highs of that searing Franklins that this fast paced rockin version kept the Hammer dancing like crazy. Joan used the lead break here to do some solo strutting on the front of the stage. Seducing the crowd with her sultry, sexy vocal turn. She was asking "Do you wanna know what I need" well hell yes Joan I do!! I loved the Tiger tee shirt she was warring...Raaaahhhrrr!
Ok...to sum up... we found a great parking space on the street, the crowd was pretty good, the loud talkers and drunks diidnt effect me as much as I thought they would. Just goes to show ya that when you least expect a show to be good, often times that's when you get a real gem.
Tonight was a real gem. This was the night so far... jump on that torrent you wont regret it!
Peace and I hope to see some of you next month when we can take over our annual residence at the Beacon once again. March Madness with the Allman Brothers Band! I love this town. Hell... I still Love You New York!!! - RichL99
O.O.
Phil's been switching to the "HE sang a little song..." for as long as I can remember.
Wow!! That's about all I can say about this show. Really loved the Joan Space thing & also great opening shows songs. Peggy-O I think sounded sweet the way Joan does her part & The second set Open St. Stephen rocked. Even the Good Lovin' ecore was really played weel. Thanx to Rob for doing what he does best by putting this up so fast.
Here is my review:
Awesome fun dance party.
yeah, he does she 1st time around, switches to he second...I first noticed at Joens Beach with the Dead 2003? Then I asked about it here during the SOTM tour...

"All I know is something like a bird within him sang...
All I know he sang a little while and then flew off..."
Phil Lesh-Birdsong Staruday 2/18/06 Hammerstein Ballroom
Definite Jerry reference. Does Phil do this often? No one seemed to notice .
ha ha...so I caused I little panic here this morning? Larry was incredible.
Last night seemed to be a bit less crowded, but I sill don't know how I made it to the bathroom and back to the floor with those two beers
midway between the stage and sbd sounded great, moved about about 10 feet at one point and could clearly read things on the stage equipment...3 FOB tapers on the floor
Mezzanine question...someone mentions a front row end seat, but the view was obstructed? Where you all the way over? Because i was going to try for one of those tonight...thanks!
>>Where you all the way over? Because i was going to try for one of those tonight...thanks!
Obstructed view. Get there an hour or more before showtime (7:30) and you can center yourself. Lots of first row sections of the 1st Mezz. are reserved for VIP groups...like the very best center section ones. I could see the ceiling and the sound wasn't affected by the "loge tunnel effect"...LTE. If I had my 'druthers, I'd druther be in one of those boxes...6 flights of stairs worth...3 stories!...right by the stage. Looked cool as hell, as they were what was obstructing my view, and I could see all the folks dancing in them.
cool, I'm going to be there at 6:30 ha ha
hey now!!!
a most enjoyable show at the Hammerstein last night....the song selection was impecable IMHO....the band was super tight, and lettin the music flow....Phil Lesh is like fine wine - only gettin better with age....i was really impressed by the interplay between the whole band, espec. barry and larry....baracco was the man as always...i enjoyed Joans verse on Death Don't....i did not regret there not being any special guest....even though I would have loved to see Warren....the band was so much more dialed in than last Friday at the Beacon....last Sat's 2nd set with Warren was the sh*t IMHO, but the core did incredible last night....Sittin on Top, Peggy-O and New Speedway were my highlights....i was NOT a huge fan of the Good Lovin encore, i'm still waiting to find out what Joan needs:-) i was a little disappointed they ended at 1215 after playing til 1:00 the past few daze, but how can you complain....
the side balcony was were it was at!!!....sorry to obstruct anyones view, but being 15 feet from the speakers with a clear sight line to the band was prime.....
Phil is the man!!!
keep on keepin on...aloha...brett
P.S Looking for a ride from New Haven for tonights show:-).....
P.P.S Go Elliot Sadler in the Daytona 500
wow I got a good nights sleep
anyway
1st set:
still waiting for that Cold, Rain, and Snow opener... but Phil, the dork that he is, drops Dire Wolf on us "The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet 'neath the ground"
lol, I love it.
the whole first set had this tremendous rockin country feel to it, great, great stuff.
The peggy-o as noted in another thread was awesome, and then a sweet birdsong, into one of the highlights for me was the jam into the Weight.
not only did it include joan on drums, it was just a sweet ass jam! I was pumped to hear the weight b/c i missed it on Wednesday, but it was exactly how I envisioned it, great leads and vocals, they nailed it!
then sticking with the theme they go into a fast and rippin SOTOTW, very nice, they jam out and I think I hear Viola, but I say to myself they are just teasing me, but lo and behold a 1st set viola (and I sure as hell thought they would end the set with it), it was fast and sweet with a nice slower jam before the last verse, incredible!! right into a rip roarin, house tearin, limb shakin bertha!!
NOW THAT IS HOW YOU END A SET!!
afterwards Phil was so pumped he was thanking everyone (the same way he does at the end of the 2nd set!!)
so now im thinking, wow, how do they top that?!!?
one of the best 1st sets ever..
well starting the 2nd set with a nice jam, melting down into st. stephen and (nowadays) unexpetedly (sp?) into The 11 is a good freakin way!!!
they were rocking the place was rocking, they were on fire!!
side note.... THANK YOU LARRY!!!
I knew you were as good as everyone said, and since last Sunday I believe you, imo, have sealed the final loop in making this band a "complete" band. they were really good before, dont get me wrong, but now with Larry playing the way he is, and taking his leads, knowing they are HIS leads, this band has jumped up another level!
the rest of the 2nd set was killer, love hearing joan on the new speedway and a killer (no pun intended Death Dont.
HelpSlipFrank was rockin, best version thus far (compared to last friday and sunday), and Joan was so freakin into it and she couldnt stop dancing she ran out to the front and was so feeling the crowd she was eliciting the energy from us!!!
best show of this tour thus far, and, imo, the best post-Q show ever!!
this band is a tight as I've ever seen, and they hit "it" last night.
the proof, of course is that Phil asked everyone to come out for a bow to the audience (something he has yet to do this tour)
see ya'll tonight!!!
Just got back from the city and I am still fired up about last nights show!!! It was totally amazing, with multiple peaks. As good a show I've seen in some time and any one who doubts this band should check this show out. It was the best Help>Slip>Franklins I have ever heard by any phil and friends lineup! I am serious. I will do a more in depth review cause I have to catch up on some sleep but it was so worth the trip. This one was a burner
Highlights were definitely The Weight, St. Stephen and the Frank, imho.
By the way, and I know this is a complete shot in the dark, if anyone found a pair of glasses with reddish over on Larry's side about halfway back, please please let me know. I would be forever grateful. My e-mail is cpw2474@yahoo.com
It makes me sooo glad to read that most people felt this was best show. was supposed to go 2/12 but pussyed out because of 2 ft snow, rolled dice last night and won. Parked on street scalped after 1/2 hr freeze on street. 1st time for me at Hammer next time I'll do mezz, I need more space..wanted to KO a few dicks around me but kept the peace. Now for the show, loved
Peggy, Joan actually gave me chills on her verse, I thought it started a little slow and country I found myself waiting to here some guitars did not half to wait long rest of 1st set smoked the Bertha close was off charts
St Stephen into the 11 was best I've heard Phil was slamming on the base like nobody I've ever heard. When they all get it rolling like that is there anything better, help/slip/franklin did it for me. I got Phil fix but wish I could get more
Jordan you are not a poser - J if you think that venue is better than the Beacon or just like any other than youve never been outta NY/NJ to see a show and should limit your use of the word poser. That was rude he was just trying to be cool and let everyone know - i think that was pretty heads up Jordan - thanks. SAT NITE was AWESOME!!! - Dire wolf just set the pace and it was on - the weight was phenominal and so was the entire show!!! Thanks Phil.
Jamming show last night. And Larry makes it look so easy. The guy is great.
This blew Friday night out of the water, no doubt about it. First set was really really tight, Bird Song was hella-melodic and long. Then the St. Stephen > Eleven goodness to open the second set, and the kick ass triumvrate to close it down. Larry stepped up his playing and his solos were HOT and they seemed to flow so well, playing rhythym and lead simultaneosuly
I won't be surprised if this gets released as a soundboard Phil was grinning ear to ear at the end and made the whole lineup come back out for a single, unified bow.
First time seeing this line-up. Love the two guitars, they both rip pretty damn sweet! Joan is really nice to hear, especially on Peggy-O, gives a nice balence to the Jammin. She has alot of patience up there, doing nothing for up to 5 minutes at a time. As a drummer myself, I have to say I was underwhelmed by Jeff Sipe, but by the second set I dug him a bit more. Molo has a much more jazzy and fluid sound, his drum kit has a wider range, more voices than Sipe's rock-and-roll 5-piece. Is there a reason why Molo isnt in this Line-up? If Phil is to keep using Sipe instead of Molo, I would like to see him incorporate a tasty percussionist to add detail to the simple style of Sipe. Just my 2ยข
Overall an awesome show. Phil sounded great, and as other people said in these posts -the St. Stephen>Jam>11 was absolutely stellar! They really hit a sublime perfection of sound in the Jam, and Phil was really smiling. Listen to the tape on that one if you werent there last night.
First of all, it must be said that Rob being in the band has made the tour. He adds a whole dimension to the band that had been missing for the past few tours. I am so glad he is back. The other thing is that from what I heard from Larry Campbell during the fall I liked. I thought it was cool that he added the Mutli-Instrumentalist vibe, and played some nice guitar solos but was never blown away. He totally kicked ass and took names during this show. This was by far and away the best I have ever heard play in Phil's Band. He was incredible! Playing consistently one great solo after another. On Franklins Tower, forget about it. So I was really impressed with LC.
Dire Wolf was really nice and very tight. Peggy-O was such a nice surpirse for me with Larry on Violin. I've always loved this song and it was great to hear it and it was sung extremely well by all. The Bird Song was a very good version with an awesome Jam in the middle of it which went into the Weight. My Friend and I were really excited by this point since that band was playing so well, and immediately agreed that it was already going to be way better than the previous night. Sitting on top of the World was another huge surprise and the energy was fantastic. Rob's solo was so good, Barry was looking at him the whole time with this "Holy Shit, this guy is playing his ass off" expression on his face. Not a perfect version by the energy really was amazing. The Viola Lee was cool with some good moments, but the Bertha was a killer. Extremely well played and just a great way to end the set. The band looked like they were having so much fun, and looked like they knew they were kicking ass. Great 1st set to say the least!
2nd set featured a Stephen> the 11 that was rediculous. Really, Really, good folks! Haven't heard it played this well since Hartford 2001'. Barry played some very taste leads during both tunes. Speedway was played really well and featured some great guitar playing from Larry. Bartering Lines is nice tune, and was played very well. I've been very impressed with the band vocally this tour. Very nice harmonies on this one. "Death Don't" was yet another surprise and was played pretty well. Once again great energy but you could tell the band wasn't as familiar playing this one as they were with the other material played previously. Then came the BUTT KICKER!!! Help>Slip>Franklins. This was mostly likely the best I've ever Phil play this, With any lineup. Many may doubt this but it was so good and it must be heard. Slipknot kept building and building to large peaks over and over. And Larry Campbell blew the roof off time and time again during Franklins Tower. Good Lovin' was a nice way to close the show and was really well played. WOW!!!
I really can't say enough about the show, it really was great. This band is for real. I am a huge fan of the "Q" lineup, but you have to see this band. It is different from the "Q" for sure but they sound very good and really are worth checking out for those of you who are skeptical. Great vocals, great solos, you really can't go wrong. NYC really wetted my appitite for Providence can't wait!
what time did they on the past few nights at the Hammer?
the show was good, don't get me wrong... But, after going to several shows this nyc run, I really don't think this show was THAT good. Maybe if its your first one, then yeah, its good. But I really think the 15th was better, then maybe Warren or Trey's nights and then this one. First, the setlist for the 18th was good, but it could have been better. I already heard the Weight last wednesday, and that was just perfect. Hearing it again not as good just made me forget about the other shows. Help>slip>franklins- always a treat, but maybe he should've switched it up again. Maybe another Dylan song would've been nice, or even a longer song to fill in the Franklin medley (Dark Star or Terrapin again would have been good). It was nice, but it could've been better. Phil needs to keep on playin new songs.
this was my third show this tour, easily my favorite. thanks phil and all for a great time... i've never dug a death don't have no mercy so hard....
Just finished dowloading the Torrent of this show... Listening to the Wieght now... much tighter than Weds. version... sounds great! Thanks again for getting it up so quick. Best sounding aud. recording so far...IMHO
this was the only show i did of the entire phil NYC run(2/18)...i found out a friend had two extra's for the 2nd mezz and decided to go last minute...the first half of the first set was very weak IMO...i like dire wolf & peggy-o both alot...but they arent appropriate openers for an NYC show on a saturday night...cold rain and snow would have blown the roof off the place...bird song is also one of my favs,
but i thought it lacked direction and the jam didnt really go anywhere...they should have saved this for later in the set/show...the weight is OK...but i have heard it sooooooooo many times it just doesnt really do that much for me anymore...good bathroom break/get a beer song...sitting on top of the world picked up the energy a little bit more, and the set got going just in time for a HOT viola lee blues>bertha...highlight of the first set by far...viola featured two very nice jams & phil was dropping bombs...the segue into bertha was awesome and the entire venue blew up into a huge dance party, a HOT version and a great closer...viola>bertha saved the set for me...
jam>st.stephen>eleven was the highlight of the night for me IMO...phil's band really does this soooooo much better than ratdog or "the dead"...maybe the best st.stephen ive ever heard...i was dancing and closed my eyes and felt like i was back at the fillmore in 1969 or something...SHIT WAS HOT...i was kinda hoping for a dark star or lovelight to segue from the eleven, but oh well...new speedway kept the old school dead vibe going through the set...they then went into a very wierd space jam that was very psychedelic...followed by the low-point of the night bartering lines...joan has a great voice, but i thought this song was BORING...why does phil cover ryan adams songs anyways? death dont have no mercy was a surprise, and was very powerful...again keeping with the 'old school dead' vibe of the setlist...help>slip>franklins smoked as always...franklins was a big dance party and sing-along, as it always is...dead-heads really love this song...evern if it still was the 3rd one of the run...i havent heard the other two of the run so i cant really compare them...but i thought it was very good...good lovin encore was a good way to end the show...joan doing her best "pigpen" "all i need" rap during good lovin'...phil dropping the bombs...sending us all off back into the COLD nyc night...
went to BB Kings for g-13 after party for some more beers and smoke...alot of peeps showed up a was a good time for a band ive never heard before...
This show was much better than the show with Trey in my opinion. Trey is cool, saw Phish a bunch of times and everything but he obviously hadn't rehearsed with the band much and it showed in some cases.
FYI-
from new Dead lyrics book-
Bertha first played FEB. 18, 1971 at Capital, NY !
Exc. show, I saw Thurs-1 set was ok, didn't know about this group.
But 2nd half into the entire Sat. show was exc.
Tease late Thurs> opening of Love Like a Man
Sat. nite late- Doin' it to Death.
Highlight> rarity of Death Don't , literally was showstopper and the Dew to be rolled away was needed. Many amazing jams- jazz, blues...
this show blew away the trey show...help / slip / franklins no comparison
no comparison...and yet, John - didn't you just compare them by saying this blew THAT away?
The 3 HSFs were all different.
Friday - I adore HSF so GOOD SONG CHOICE but imo the band had not coalesced into the power it has after 6 MORE shows. I enjoyed Friday - but, hell, I ADORE HSF.
Sunday - TREY. #1 The Show Opener. WITH....
a group of musicians that I assume had had minimal rehearsal time together. I liked the Trey show (luckily I dig Trey's playin these days) but it was during the HSF that his sticking point became evident.
Each guitarist in Philco brings a certain style. Warren - SOUL. Jimmy - Jimmy shines, Jimme glistens, Jimmy glows - THE LIGHT. Robben Ford - jazzy guy. Trey - rock star solos.
And at the end of the Sun HSF....well, Trey, you have to LISTEN TO PHIL END Franklin's for that precise closure. (you know - BAMbaaaaBOP BOP BOP...x3) And he didn't. His solo stepped on Phil's ending. HOWEVER....by the second set I thought Trey was really in the groove and in the mix. Listening to Phil.
POINT BEING: Right oc the Trey night HSF had jagged edges. IT WAS THE FIRST SONG OF THE SHOW.
and then the Sat Hammy.
Best of all 3. Ends the show. Barry is in it - and this band has magic, so the HSF had it too. Sipe was better on the knot. (He still aint Molo on it tho.)
Was it better than the Trey one?
yeah but - OF COURSE IT WAS, eh?
Actually - it was more like this (with the jam teases that I heard for the second set):

One of the main things that originally drew me toward the GD was the way (in the early 70s) that they sang most of the verses in most of the songs in HARMONY!
"no comparison...and yet, John - didn't you just compare them by saying this blew THAT away? "
ha ha, I liked all 8 nights...can't wait to hear the tapes and sbd's

Hammerstein Ballroom - NYC, NY
Song Review:
Set 1:
Direwolf was the opener. They took it pretty slow with Barry on the steel. Good version, but they did not really jam it out too much.
Peggy-O was really beautiful. I may be wrong, but I think Larry went on his steel, and Barry played guitar for this one. Great singing and a nice, slow Peggy-O.
Birdsong always fools me into thinking it's Dark Star at first. Every time. I liked it, and Phil sounded great singing it. Very long version with an extended jam in the middle. At one point, it waws ripping so hard, I had to ask my friend if it was still Birdsong!
Jam into The Weight was sick. I love The Weight and was SO happy to finally hear Joan sing it!!
Sittin' On Top Of The World was totally ripping. Very nice version and it was fairly long.
Jam> Viola Lee Blues was very very nice. First Viloa I've heard without Jimmy, and they definitely have changed the arrangement so that it is the band driving the song. I missed Jimmy's lead, but I did like it overall. I think Larry still has some time to get a total feel for this song, but his tone is great for it. Very long version that I thought had V1 and V2, and led into a
Bertha closer for first set. Very nice and rockin' I always love to hear this tune to close first set. Very up-tempo and fun!
set 2 to come!
Set 2: Jam>
St. Stephen always nice. Sounded good with Phil dropping bombs all over the place. It was nice to hear Barry rip this one on lead most fo the song, and the final section that sounds like the 11 a little bit was SMOKIN'!
The Eleven was just great. Barry stayed on lead on this one while Larry did the repetitive rhythm. Barry was just smokin' it up, and it was so nice to see. My only complaint is that Brry needs to be turned up.
New Speedway Boogie they had teased this the night before in the beginning of the first set, so we knew it was coming at some point. This Darkness Has Got To Give all right!
Space> Bartering Lines was just f*cking awesome. All instrumental RA song that totally ripped!!
Death Dont Have No Mercy was what I was waiting for all weekend (besides TLEO). I felt like this was the shout out to my dog Samson that was needed for me, and I owe Phil big for it. Thanks Phil!!
Help on the Way> Slipknot!>Frankln's Tower was totally sick. Very cool!!
E: ^Donor Rap/Intros were doem by a fan who is also a Dr. and a blood donor.
Good Lovin' was the old school version. Joan danced up and down the length of the stage near the end ofthe tune. Another nice nod to Mr. Weir.
Conclusion: Great 2 night run. The venue was oversold by a massive amount, and I would have rather hung on the floor with Woz, dcf and crew, but my buddy is handicapped and needs a seat. It was great to meet Wes and kenny rogers, and I hope you had a GREAT birthday Woz!

ok, just listened to this show for the first time having been to 2/11, 2/15 and 2/19.
I thought 2/19 was remarkable, but this show I'd have to say comes as close to perfect as any live music I've heard created in the past ten years.
The songs are filled with energy, the transitions are flawless, it just goes on and on. Even the donor rap was very cool.
wow.
my fav show of the run i saw....blew my head off and i was pretty much sober (that nite) except for 2 hits o weed.
thanks to all the great New York Zonas!!!!! i love u guys...ur a riot and a lot of fun to be with....thanks!...and thanks a million to the band ;-)
This was a great show. We flew out from Calif to see the 3 Hammerstein shows, and were NOT disappointed. I hardly missed a Calif. or Redrocks Q show, or any of Phil's other incarnations (xcpt Phish 4/99) and have had mixed feelings about the dissolution of that lineup...love that Ferrari of a band! But after seeing 12/30 & 31, and having a good time but mixed fellings about the 31st, was a little skeptical. But these 3 shows cemented my feelings about this combo...A very nice change-up form the Q. And that's what its all about - keepin it FRESH! The Chris Robinson/Joan/RR Earth lineup was good too, culminating around Mardi Gras and the May Berkeley shows, but that was a lot of people on stage so the sound is a lot thicker. This band is pared down to a Quintet again, with 3 vocals (besides Phil). That is one of the great things about having Rob back!!! We love Rob!!!!!! He was groovin big time at these shows!
We were dead center on the rail and the sound couldn't have been better. Clear vocals, clear everything. Barry, Larry, and Rob traded solos effortlessly, though I thought Larry stepped on Barry a few times. His (Larry's) strong presence became especially clear the next night when they blew the beginning of Gimme Shelter, and he retook the lead-in guitar effect, the earmark of that song. The rest recovered by following him...more on that later in a 12/19 review. Larry and Barry's styles and sounds are so different...they compliment each other very nicely. Larry sounds like Downtown Studio Dude and Barry sounds like dreamy birds in forests. Barry was quite athletic, jumping tween his Jerry-like devil guitar and the pedal steel. Larry, "Downdown"...I mean get down to business when it comes your turn, dude! He cranks out polished, clean, logical, ascending leads, well begun and well ended. Nothing missed but still improvisational. I noticed Phil looked over at Joan at the end of one of Larry's solos like he just saw Barry Bonds break Babe's HR record..like, "listen to this guy...what else can should we expect!" His 12 string acoustic (Spanish?) guitar also sounded sweet, and the violin during Sittin On Top, Peggy-O and others added a special Louisiana country-O touch!!! Nothing negative...Sipe is quite adept on the drums, but I must say he is not yet the driving mojo that Molo is. Nonetheless, he did a great job, had a good attitude on stage, and even shared with Joan! What fun! I hope Phil posts SBDs of this show!
