Last night was hot. I can't wait. Going to try for Dim Sum again this time in my Stealy tye dye. Read first post here if you are interested:

I was in line early last night, didn't seem like you needed to be. I went to the bathroom six time before the show started including once at 8PM and never had a problem getting back. Glad I went that last time, because it was the last time all night! I didn't miss a beat and am glad of it.
I know I'm talking to myself here, but wanted to add $6.00 a beer inside seemed to be the cheapest price in the area, but don't drink too much if you are going to be on the floor.
gimme a W
gimme an A
gimme an R
gimme an R -
wishful thinkin', I know.
After last night, he is not needed. I love him, but I would love a repeat of last night!
Ok, on my way into the city. If you see me say hi. I can't wait until its about 8:24PM!
Will the venue allow tapers to go to the mez even with a GA floor ticket ? When I bought my ticket I was told taper tickets are never issued if the venue is GA or even partly GA..and since the floor is GA thats all you need...I want to tape but dont want to
bring my rig and get shut out... anyone know for sure..thanks
3 FOB's on the floor...
Here is what I got out of last nights seating thing. If you have Mezz 1 & you get in Mezz 1 section you are stuck there the whole night. It sound a lil weird but that how it works. I tried.
Yeah there are 3 separate ticket scanners and 3 separate entrances and there's no way to switch between them, so if you have a floor ticket you're on the floor, but there were a few tapers on the floor so you'll just have to join them.
hey now!!
anyone driving through New Haven for tonights show....after last nights throwdown, I would love to make it back to the Manhattan Center. I'll cover gas and chip in on parking....please email me at heynowaloha@hotmail.com if interested....
much thanks!!!
aloha, brett
After much anticipation looking through setlists of the entire NYC run, I am finally getting to my first Phil & Friends show
Can't wait.
Would be nice to get some guests for the last show in NYC...I dunno, Dylan maybe?
I hope it's just us.
Guests aren't going to make this any more special than it already is.
I agree, but a little scofield wouldn't be tough on the ears...
If you get anything as near as hot as last night you will not need guest. Barry and Larry are more than capable, Rob was pounding shit out of keys, drumming was big and tight throughout, and nobody slaps bigger than Phil. Wish I could go tonight but at least I got 1 show WOW
WE are the special guests.
and RIGHT
this band don't need NO ONE...
but if Warren showed for the NYC farewell....I wouldn't be ANGRY. As long as Barry played one set too.
That way Warren can do THE RAT....
what time have they been going on at the Hammer? I know Beacon was 8:30, but the doors are at different times. Thanks!
8:30 last night, 8:40 friday
can anyone tell me if the FLOOR cleared after 2nd Set last night like it did on Friday night? ..it seemed 50% cleared by mid-2nd Set..! (hoping for that tonight.. i don't like what i'm hearing about the Mezz-sound issues and i hate to be used like a clean tower by the wookie-phishthings.. jk)!
new york, new york will be played again tonight. encore i say...
they are probably going to get the dark star & lovelight that i wanted to hear laast night...terrapin too....
Hopefully they hold off on "Eyes" till Providence, I couldn't be at the hammer tonight tonight

I often wonder that. My wife wanted to go Friday so I did. I haven't really connected to any incarnations of the band members since 1995. I dig the fact that they are happy doing what they're doing and people are into it, but I just cannot "get there" anymore at a Phil, Ratdog or Dead shows.
Am I the only one on this site who feels like this? I don't want to bring down those who can connect. I want you to connect and encourage you to go on. However, try as I may since 1995, I'm never satisfied.
Any advice on how to view these bands(s) in a different light? Whenever I go I can't stop staring at the stage and thinking about who is no longer there. It bums me out all night.
Help!
roll away... the dew. you gotta roll away... the dew. No more franklins tower tonight... Sugar Mag or Casey Jones to end NYC! (or Dark Star!)
roll away... the dew. you gotta roll away... the dew. No more franklins tower tonight... Sugar Mag or Casey Jones to end NYC! (or Dark Star!)
saw the gd about 100xs 1978-1995. they were a lot of fun

mind bendin too. keep on it take the time its your new lingua. others music may take you away with with your new drive
long live jerry peace and good luck
phil definitely brings it every show..band is always tight and fresh....followed the dead from 77-95 jeery was g*d phil is becoming g*d....not the grateful dead without jerry but this current grouping is awesome and definitely keeps the spirit alive...thanks phil you da man
Sunra, 120 from 84-95 for me. You really are into it, which is awesome! It sounds as if you see the bands as separate entities. I'm staring at Phil thinking the whole time that he is just a portion of what was, not the Godfather of the Jamband scene (I mean that with true respect).
Do you draw a line after 1995 and not look book while you are there? If I hear a certain song I immediately think of a show I was at. I can even recall specifically where I was in the venue. Then I get all fucking bummed out and can't relax and enjoy the moment with P&F.
Give me some ADVICE!
musicians needed for the future, pass it on and encourage it

This was the main trigger for the second set for the Grateful Dead from 77-95. They played it all the time. If you want to hear a great one find 4/13/83 University of Vermont or 5/13/77 or 10/31/91 12/19/93 and tons of others...
Phil and Friends closed the 1st set of 12/4/05 Beacon with Scarlet Fire. Maybe it was '04???

It does seem like many people never saw the Dead which blows my mind at how quickly the time passes.

holy sh*T! just got back from this show. it was amazing!!! Sunday night crowd was great. went saturday and had a bad spot on the floor. lots of people talking and shoving. but tonight was perfect. crowd was great, and show was HOT! i'll write a more full review after i get some sleep. thanks phil!!
Just back from the show...how unusual is Rosemary? A quick check of Deadbase...I don't think the Dead ever played it in concert
great show, lotsa ripping jams, train wrecks, chaos, harmony and sweet vocals.... tripper's delight.
Belive it or not - Nobody's Girl was a real highlight tonight. Great harmonies and several rocking jams.
Just like NewYork city..
so, whatls to do in Providencce???!!!!
>>>Phil, Ratdog or Dead shows...
Any advice on how to view these bands(s) in a different light?
Jerry is Bob, IMHO Phil shows are categorically different from the other two. Way better.
Like many people in here I've been to a couple hun GD/JGB shows. I thought about Jer in some fashion every single day for 5 years after his death and most days for 10 yrs. It took a lot of post-GD shows to get past that feeling you describe. Something clicked last Dec at the Warfield shows
One thought is to download and listen to Phil shows like you used to listen to the GD early on. Part of the love of GD music is the emotional content that comes with intimacy. Phil's music isn't the same as the GD music that you probably knew inside and out.
Just got back and I'm exhausted from being on my feet for 4+ hours. I gotta say this show was by far the best I've seen on this run (the others being friday 1, sunday 1 (trey show), and friday 2). I kept hearing hints of the other one early second set, anybody else hear that?
"If you want to hear a great one find 4/13/83 University of Vermont or 5/13/77 -"
I was at that show in 77 at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago & I can vouch for that.
... at the show here in NYC tonight also and it blew me away.
Best of the three I've seen this week. (Tuesday, Friday and tonight).
The Thing about the Scarlet transition into Fire is that it did not seem like it was going into Fire at all. And then all of a sudden they turn the corner into this rippin!!! Fire!
This Scarlet> Fire transition was the most unique I have ever heard. I saw Hamilton '90 and now this.
I believe Sunra was broadcasting live:
"red light , bluesy jam ? outa or back into scarlet!!!!!!!
OMG INTO FIRE!!!!!!!"
When I read this, I knew exactly what he meant. Wait 'till y'all hear this.
The kept me guessin all night. Loved it...push pull...wow
sweet show...and I got my front row lower mezzanine that I eyed from the floor the previous two nights...shared the space with some cool older heads...most of the ballons were launched from my row LOL...and the YOU KNOW OUR LOVE WON'T FADE AWAY banner...some head in a wheelchair tossed it up to me from the floor asked us to hang it...he said it had been to shows out west and back...funny how a banner can have cool history...and he got his NFA...real bo diddley buzzsaw style
yeah, fire, thought they might just end scarlet because they did fire already, so even though it was a repeat, it was great
Smokin' show.
It was cool that the NFA banner worked. Also cool they closed the China Cat > ... Rider, which was what I'd been expecting as the first set closer instead of Fire.
Fantastic jamming, many many hints of other songs--Truckin', Morning Dew, Wharf Rat / Darkstar, even a little FOTD. Phil was absolutely on fire.
what was also cool was that when I got in at 6:35 or so, Phil was soundchecking big brown at fairly loud volume...kinda funky...
>>>Attics!!!! Holy Shit. Great Encore choice. How are the vocals?
phreakin amazing!!!
they nailed this one to perfection!!!!... they nailed them all to perfection!!!!
tremendous show in general!!!
GREAT SHOW!
I also saw Friday (Beacon), Trey, and Friday. This was my favorite by far. I was talking with a friend today and saying that I wasn't really all that psyched for the show, that they were starting to feel repetitive... then he pointed out to me that's probably because I've seen about 20 Phil shows in the last 12 months. Then tonight totally turned my mood around. I'm a huge fan of RA (though not when he's playing with Phil), and I loved the version of Nobody Girl. Also thought it was cool how they opened and closed the NY run with New York New York.
Terrapin was super chunky, Gimme Shelter was hot, Rider smoked, and even NFA was rippin'. The harmonies on Attics were awe inspiring beautiful, and the New York New York closer was just plain out rockin. Really strong tune.
I did notice that for the first time, there were many times that the band seemed to be out of synch a lot throughout the night, not that it mattered much. It was almost as if Phil was a half a beat ahead or behind from time to time. Again, not complaining, but it was kinda surprising since these guys have been so tight. But tonight I really FELT it, which hasn't been that way for a while. Venue wasn't nearly as packed on the floor either, which was a relief. Only bummer was that my buddy lost his car keys (Dodge, if anyone happened to find them!). We had to take the train back to LI and he had to pick up his spare and jump back on the train before 8am to move his car and not get a $150 ticket.
New Potato was mind-bending. He deconstructed Terrapin and expanded every nuance of it. And then put Rosemary in the middle. They were definitely on tonight!
Agree with Matthew that the band was out of sync a few times. The show did not flow quite as well as the other 3 I've been to on this tour. But the playin' was so powerful tonight. Reminded me a bit of the feeling of the Trey show last Sunday. Lovelight>Rag>Lovelight opener set the tone for the night. And Joan sounded so amazing all night. Very powerful Scarlet>Fire to close the first set. I got lots of repeats from earlier shows, but really didn't care. One of the 2nd set highlights for me was He's Gone.
End of Rider into Not Fade Away was awesome.
Loved the RA song to close the show.
This was my only show at Hammerstein, and it was not as bad as some Friday/Saturday reports. Crowded on the flow, but manageable. I was about halfway back, and it was very loud! Security disappeared right before the show.
Thank you Phil for 4 amazing shows!
Sam L.
Yes, that Fire caught me by surprise, too.
How Phil managed to fool some of us with that is just amazing. He had everyone off balance, so when he broke into Fire it was explosive. It's cool that some other people had the same impression.
What a nice NYC run. Thank you, all.
I agree with some here that this show lacked some of the flow of the others. Liked that Phil pulled out two old obscure gems New Potato Caboose and Rosemary. Gimme shelter was smokin'. Scarlet>Fire was excellent. Was in mezz 2 in the first row near a taper who provided a nice touch with some nag champa incsense. Will be missing Lupos and will catch up at the Tower. Thanks Phil for a real good time!
-Truckin', Morning Dew, Wharf Rat / Darkstar, even a little FOTD.
Glad I wasn't imagining that! Woke up thinking "they teased the hell out of me"

Last night was one of the most satisfying shows I have ever seen! They wanted to blow the doors of the Hammerstein and they DID.
3-4 different times, they were searching for the sound but when they hit it...they hit it hard!
Larry and Barry were really great. I knew they becames a band on Tuesday and the last two nights proved it for me. I only saw four on this run, but I am soooo into this band!!!!!!
Wish I could hit the road with all of my brothers and sisters...zoners and all!
Have a blast...be safe....keep on rocking!
Myles
Psychedelic Monster
Last night was among the most intense shows I have ever been part of. Not trippy but hard-driving psychedelic rock and roll.
I'm having a hard time putting it into words right now - maybe it'll come to me later. It was just one of those shows that is going to leave a mark on my psyche for a long time.
agreed, out of the five shows I have seen (fri/sat beacon and all three hammerstien), Sunday night was the most intense....
IMHO plf has become the dead experience....guessing what songs are coming ..hearing something in first setthat appears later in the show or in the next show...phil has brought back alot of music dead stopped plating back in 60's and early 70's. he is the grateful dead experience reincarnate ..without jerry but with alot of the same mystique ...surprise and excitement. my wife is calling this my mid life crisis at 45 ..i guess there coul dbe worse...nevertheless i look forward to these shows as much as i did the grateful dead ..it sustains me....energizes me and enriches me...carry on phil..the grateful dead spirit lives through you ! phil is g*d! by the way his shows..combo's and song selections are way less predictable than the grateful dead ever were from 77- 95 imho.
i agree jaydusk, last night you just didn't know what was going to happen. i felt like phil was musically leading us around on an adventure, he was taking us through peaks and valleys (rosemary into terrapin????!!! where did that come from?)
and goddamn phil was having a good time. he was totally digging larry's playing, big-ass smile on his face
Great show. Great run. Great band...... subtle nuances rippled out into the spheres of unlimited devotion, while bombs of love pounded, keeping time with the discordant beat of our collective heart. it all just rolled into one.
Liked the show a lot, also saw last Sunday(Trey show)..Last night was much better for me..Floor was a lot looser than I thought..Was around 10 rows back from the stage,no problem moving around...Aoxomoxoa was on Phils mind last night..
Whats with Phil mouthing quietly into his mic all night, are they all wearing monitors in their ears for the changes?
> I did notice that for the first time, there were many times that the band seemed to be out of synch a lot throughout the night, not that it mattered much. It was almost as if Phil was a half a beat ahead or behind from time to time. Again, not complaining, but it was kinda surprising since these guys have been so tight. But tonight I really FELT it, which hasn't been that way for a while.
It felt to me like Phil was really pushing all the players to challenge themselves, go beyond what they thought they could do. The Caboose was sloppy in a couple places--hard time remembering some of the changes--and there was one time when the band actually just dropped the ball and the music basically stopped.
It completely did not matter. They were playing without a net all night, and those few bobbles were much more than compensated for by many moments of brilliance and beauty.
> It was just one of those shows that is going to leave a mark on my psyche for a long time.
I agree. This is one I'll always remember. Let it shine, let it shine.
"I did notice that for the first time, there were many times that the band seemed to be out of synch a lot throughout the night, not that it mattered much. Lemme clarify - what I FELT was that old familiar feeling of exhiliration, not the missed changes. Don't give a rat's ass about screwups, I'd rather see these guys challenge themselves and miss then play it safe and nail it.
I'm still really buzzing from the show, I haven't felt like this post-show in a very long time.
Harold...From Phil's message dated January 5, 2006....
When addressing a certain Zoner and speaking about why he plays with Ryan Adams..
Phil wrote:
"I like it that we deconstruct the songs so that verses are transposed, or the bridge comes in early, or the jam leads back to a verse instead of a chorus. I like it that we have to be on our tippy-tippy toes to make the acute left turns and abrupt changes that Ryan likes to spring on us. I like to spring those kind of changes too- what do you think I'm doing when I talk into my mike and you can't hear me?.."
Thanks Gdad
>>I like to spring those kind of changes too- what do you think I'm doing when I talk into my mike and you can't hear me?..
i DO THAT WITH wHO kNOWS? ALL THE TIME EXCEPT WE DO IT WITHOUT ANY verbal or physical communciation
Does anyone remember when they started singing China Cat, the intros sounded like Scarlet? Also, did Rob only sing 2 verses in China Cat instead of 3? Then later in the first set, it sounded like they were going back into China Cat, instead went right into Scarlet? I think Phil was phucking with our heads! Just like the previous posts - you did not know where the band was going next!
yes, guessing the songs last night was a blast! my buddy i was with was usually spot on the money. he'd lean over and say "they're going to play gimme shelter" and they'd go right into it. also, like floepiejane said, there was SOOO much teasing going on last night. i agree with your notes 100%. kept thinking they were going to go into wharf rat or dark star or shakedown or ujb constantly. definately my favorite show of the the whole run. the jams were INTENSE and you got the sense that everyone was trying to invent something new and different. Can't wait to hear this show again.
> Does anyone remember when they started singing China Cat, the intros sounded like Scarlet? Also, did Rob only sing 2 verses in China Cat instead of 3? Yeah, funny thing about that: My wife had been wanting a China Cat, but she had to leave our spot on the floor during the first set, and more or less missed it when they played it.
Later when they cranked up the China Cat jam, I told her the band knew she'd been away the first time, so they brought it back for her. And then they turned it into Scarlet, which is what I'd been wanting to hear before the show....
intense show...did anyone notice a weird transition into Shelter? Had my eyes closed, thought I heard a lurch, and opened them to see Rob waving the band into the song...song rocked after that
...he's definitely bringing out the best in the band, especially the guitar players. I think Larry is going places he's never gone before. There were some train wrecks but who cares... it all roll into one. I did notice that Sipe was having a tough time here and there and even got up off the kit after Phil gave him a cue to space and his beats were strange in places, almost defiant. The biggest blunder was when Phil called Gimme Shelter and the band had to take a left tuyn at Albaquerque... out of chaos comes harmony. Phil's head hung in shame... Larry saved the day. That jam at the end of nobody's girl is so Dew-like; they raged on that one more than Dew itself... it's all about the new tunes 'cause they're fresh and open. Golden oldies; Rosemary... Attics... Rag... Caboose... what a night, what an NYC run... thank you NY, Earth, Milky Way, Galaxy cluster, Cosmos, Universe, Parallel Universe and multiple everythings... forever.
Its Cowboy Negman at the Wheel..
>>>thought I heard a lurch...
I think it was a bit more than a lurch. They ground to a complete halt for an instant.
But, to quote the great sage and Zen master, Rob (Aardvark), "There were some trainwrecks, but, who cares?"
>>>Agree with Matthew that the band was out of sync a few times. The show did not flow quite as well as the other 3 I've been to on this tour.
Phil's warming it up for the RA experience.
I definitely agree with the teases, but would also add a huge "estimated prophet" tease sometime before gimme shelter and after he's gone if i remember correctly. It sounded almost exactly like Jerry's B-day 8.1.04 at SPAC for a few there. Also, its no doubt true that there were a few wrecks and SPACE miscarried but the way they came out of the tough spots was really admirable. I've been really diggin the barry/larry combination. Kind of expected Warren but it's hard to imagine something better than the times when they really hit it last night. Absoultetly Amazing Show.
rik that is some serious ice sculpture...
Wow.. What an awesome sounding show. Any chance that someone can post a Bit Torrent link. I was at two of the shows, Wednesday at Beacon and Friday Night at Hammerstein.
I loved both shows and found the energy they had on Friday at Hammerstein incredible. We were within 20 feet of stage and had, contrary to most people's views, plenty of room. And, by late in the second set it had cleared out by 20% or so which made it mellow and even more incredible.
Sounds like Sunday night was, however the killer show, with all the big biggies, Scarlet >> Fire and Chinacat >> IKYR
It never ceases to amaze me how Barry and Larry have really gelled into a tandem that is unstoppable with Phil leading the way and Rob/Jeff doing more than their shares. Such an amazing group.
this is a great summary: "subtle nuances rippled out into the spheres of unlimited devotion, while bombs of love pounded, keeping time with the discordant beat of our collective heart. it all just rolled into one."
They may have ground to a halt for a second before gimme shelter but the train landed square back on another track and kept rolling on. Joan tore into that song. I think she had to go in the back and recouperate for a while when it was done
I lost my mind quite a few times last night and that was certainly one of them
hey now!!!
Grate show last night....the crowd energy was lacking compared to Saturday(go figure)....i got a little sleepy in the middle of the 2nd set....but i enjoyed the Terrapin-IKYR-NFA to close the set....the band was tight and rockin, but i'm surprised the crowd wasn't responding....the attics was sweet, and NYNY was a nice closer to bring the whole run full circle...i'm sure the Prov and Philly shows will be excellent....i couldn't believe how strict they were at the Hammerstein, I have never seen a venue refuse to let you down stairs and lock the doors out to the lobby....i thought it was a major fire hazzard IMHO.....good times, I'm glad i went.....but not even close to Saturday, crowd energy wise....Scarlet Fire was nice, as was He's Gone....Thanks Phil and Co.

hey brett - different story where i was on the floor re:crowd energy. I saw some freaking going on around me (and mysefl included) like i haven't seen on a dozen years. i think people were just sorta speechless after each song. also didn't see a single security guy within 40 feet of me all night long. I thought I was going to regret not having a seat but i was very happy down on the floor.
Larry busted out a very cool instrument twice last night that i had never seen before - ( once during rosemary/terrapin i think). it had sort of sitary-spanish guitar sort of feel to it.
Apparently this is what he was playing (from tooboard)
CITTERN: The cittern is also a member of the mandolin family and is often confused with the bouzouki even among musicians who play these instruments. There seems to be a lack of standardization in distinguishing the two instruments. It is usually considered to be a 10 string instrument of the mandolin family. (Cittern also seems to have been a loose family name during the Renaissance for smallish, double- or triple-course, wire-strung fretted instruments.) The modern cittern was introduced by Stefan Sobell in the early 1970s when he built an instrument inspired by an old arch-top guitar and a Portuguese guitarra. He didn't have a name for it and realized it was a cittern only when looking through a book of medieval instruments.
2nd set Magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all I have to say! Spanned a 1,000 lifetimes! unreal!!!! speakers were popping and going in and out during first set in the 1st mezz- REALLY annoying but after talking to the staff they cleared it up for the second. Gotta love the 2nd set Magic!! OUTRAGEOUS!!! The spirit of the Dead was very much alive last night.
hey now stonedagain,
it did look like people were getting down and having fun on the floor...i tried to make it down to boogie with some out of town phriends but i was turned away by security.....i was just expecting more peeps up out of their seats, and on their feet, in the mezz....but on the whole thought, IMHO, Sunday was more subdude than Saturday....the stretch between He's Gone and Terrapin was VERY mellow...
They did play til 1am - 45 longer than Saturday.

>>i DO THAT WITH wHO kNOWS? ALL THE TIME EXCEPT WE DO IT WITHOUT ANY verbal or physical communciation<<
oye.
I enjoyed the show, but thought Saturday was better. This was a more mellow show. I may end up liking it better after extensively listening to both recordings. I could have just been exhausted from dancing all Saturday night and I felt cold the whole time. Apparently Joan did too because she kept putting a jacket on when she went back stage. I spent both nights up front on the rail in front of Larry and Phil.
(By the way I like Joan, but some of the JoanHeads seem really hard up. Please try to control yourselves a little. Its like teenage girls and the Beatles at times).
JAMS JAMS AND MORE JAMS,
a rock solid show,
scarlet ((fire))
china cat
cats under the freakin stars baby!
i love the lyrics in that tune and i could
actually decifer them last night, thanks Joan.

Did you go to any shows? I'd love your take on these reviews.
Holy smokes!!! PHIL!!!! I guess it is truely all about the adventure and the trip involved. Theres no way something like sunday nights show could have happened in san francisco.. or on the west coast around these parts for that matter. it happened in new york because it was meant to be!! i will be on the torrent as soon as its uploaded!! wow wowowoww wow wow wow wo!!
Hey now,
That instrument that Larry plays is commonly called a bouzouki these days although it is different from the traditional bouzouki played in Greece. It is very common in Irish music and in fact evolved after a few very cool Irish guys started playing the Greek bouzouki as a back-up instrument instead of guitar.
Actually among the so-called Irish bouzoukis there are a number of distinct instruments. The one that Larry plays would properly be called an octave mandolin -- i.e., an instrument strung exactly like a mandolin but one octave lower. (I know because I play one.) The term "cittern" (mentioned above) is usually referred to a similar instrument with ten strings instead of eight.
I've heard Larry play this in Dylan's band before.
I can only add: Damn, I wish I was at this show!
from larry's site...I don't know if anyone ever clicks links, they seem to pass without comment...

Great fuckin show!!!!
Joan took over the room with Gimme Shelter!!! Blew my mind!
Great to meet all the Zoners. Thanks for hooking a brother up Stondagain!
hey countryman, Im intereste in checking out bouzouki/octave mandolin...have any suggestion as to manufacturers ?
how about the guy who made Larry's...see link above
Hey John and g,
The instruments made by Stephan Sobell (the guy who made Larry's) are very expensive, and I believe there is a long wait for a new one (probably shorter if you are Bruce Springstein or Larry Campbell). You can sometimes find some used ones but again, they are pricey. Incredibly wonderful instruments if you've got that kind of dough to spend.
Weber is a good brand to check out -- Flatiron also makes an octave mandolin, or use to anyway -- believe they are pretty decent and a good buy.
I think the best ones out there are probably still made by individual luthiers rather than brand name manufactureres. I got mine from a great luthier in Arcata, California named Phil Crump.

Wow - best show of the run!
While the first set was all repeats (and threepeats)
from earlier in the run, I thought everything they did
tonight had been markedly improved from the versions
played earlier in the week, Also probably the longest
first set (and overall show) of the run. With the
first set running from 8:15 -9:45 and set 2 from
10:30-1 am - for 4 hours of total music.
Highlights of the first set included the high energy
and jammy Lovelight opener and reprise, the
groovingist yet version of Cats Under the Stars, And
the set ending Scarlet > Fire (with Joan doing a very
nice interp of her verse of Fire - don't think she did
a verse on at least one of the earlier versions.
While I found the first set very enjoyable, I was
making a point at setbreak of saying how they really
need to bring in some non-repeats for the loyal fan,
especially as they still hadn't played Box, NPC, He's
Gone, or Alligator - though I did note I'd find a
repeat of Gimme Shelter welcome.
So needlessly to say I was tickled pink when they
launched into the first set with an amazing New Potato
Caboose (featuring Larry on a double strung acoustic
instrument that lookes like a cross between a Lute and
a Bouzouki - I'll just call it a Bouzouki here). The
20 minute jam out of NPC was one of the highlights of
the whole run IMO, with so much musical conversation
and the band expressing itself as a coherent
improvisational unit. Phil was also doing a bit of
real nice walking bass in one of the jams this set -
not sure if it was this one or later in the set.
He's Gone was as beautiful as ever in Joan's hands,
truly an emotional peak and one I'd been waiting for
all week. Another interesting jam followed that, with
suggestions of King Solomon's Marbles and Shakedown
before settling into Nobody's Girl (which was perfect
- I'd call it the Ryan tune of the week - great
jamming again in this one).
Gimme Shelter was even more on fire than the other
night, and I'd pretty much be calling it the
definitive version of the tune were it not for the
version Ruth Copland recorded with Funkadelic backing
her in the early 70s.
Lady With A Fan arguably even added to the perfection
of the set, as Phil's vox gave me the perfect
opportunity for a long needed trip to the bathroom -
and Larry pulled out his Bouzouki for a very nice mid
eastern sounding jam out of this, which emphasized to
me how close Terrapin and Kashmir are to one another.
The following Rosemary was a beautiful surprise treat
which I'd say surpassed the studio version we're all
familiar with. And then Joan came in with the big save
by taking over the vox from Phil for the Inspiration >
Terrapin section of the jam, making for the best
sounding version of this since a long f-ing time ago.
Know You Rider and NFA were a fun way to send us off,
especially since I've always thought these two tunes
would work really well in juxtaposition, and had never
heard the GD do it that way (though I'm sure they did
at some point).
The Attics encore was as beautiful as this tune has
ever sounded, with a really lovely vocal blend
achieved by Joan, Rob & Phil, and lovely contribs by
Barry on Steel and Larry on Bouzouki. And the
anticipated New York, New York closer was very fun and
way more jammed out than it had been as the run opener
10 days ago.
Overall, I'd say the second set was easily the best
set of the 8 NYC shows - while the special guests last
weekend were very fun, those experiments don't match
last night's work from a band that's been getting
tighter and more inspired steadily over a week and a
half - and a strong argument could be made that last
night's entire show would have been the strongest (in
addition to the longest) of the week, if one could
experience the first set without being aware of all
the repeats and threepeats.

Thank you Countryman and all for the info on Larry's Cittern...though I thought it was 12 not 8 strings...must have been something in the water. ;-} I was trippin on the sound of that thing all night. What a treat!!! But I did miss his violin playing, as it was very sweet on previous nights and in December. My subjective experience of these shows being absolutely fantastic is vindicated by everyone's reviews. And as I remember it, Phil didn't do the rushed double time thing with Terrapin that he seemed to slip into over the years. The cittern on Terrapin lent a fresh sound to it.
Good review, Robert Freeman!
Crowd energy was great where I was, on the rail dead center behind Big Jim in the wheelchair.
Come on folks, am I the ONLY one who saw/heard the big breakdown at the beginning of Gimme Shelter??...they hinted at GS in the previous jam, then whole band crashed into it without the sneaky guitar tease that is the earmark of that song, Joan was about to start singing, then, pause, Phil backed up, kind of withered momentarily, the right side from drums over stoppeddddd, Joan freaked and turned 180 around, like "what the fuck are you guys doing!!?", Rob and Barry looked over to see what the hell happened, Rob took off and readjusted his ear bud, then Larry picked up a new beat with the standard GS guitar lead in, and the rest started following along like sheep after the sheapard like nothing happened. Haven't listen to any recordings yet, but if this isn't apparent, maybe it WAS the water! ;-)) That was the only miscue of the weekend that I noticed.
These were my girlfriend's first shows, and during the show came spontaneous eruptions from her like "Awesome!", "Amazing!", "Cool!" and my favorite, "The CDs are nothing compared to this!!" I smiled with great satisfaction...she is no longer a >40 year old virgin, but I'm not sure she really realized what a special set of shows she fell into.
Attics was sweeter than honey. Absolutely amazing. Best I've seen since the GD, if I HAVE seen it since the GD.
Nice meeting you all up at the rail...Comin from SF, these were my first NYC shows, and the people are a bit different with that East Coast feel, but very warm. I felt very much welcomed and at home. YOU are the Best New Yorkers/New Jerseyers and jsut plain folks there are!!! (Duuhhh.)
And Thank You Phil, you did It again!!!!!!!
It's actually 10 stings. : )
(if he's playing the same one he did with Dylan.)

Born crosseyed! ;-)
AND drank the water!
And specifically, thank you Dubstar for the links!
aaaaah... graceful
sweet show, one that will resonate for a while. I could only catch one so I figured the band would want to go out with a bang and did they ever. I had a feeling this one was special and I'm glad to see that confirmed by your posts. I would have been happy if the whole show sounded like the first set; nice, kinda tentative, and I know the band usually warms up after the break but damn! a perfect synergistic fusion, inspired jamming into that totally rocking rider, pure exuberance! attics was pitch perfect (thank you joan) I hope this band stays together, next time they're in nyc I will not limit myself to one show.
