This should be interesting. So much left to play after last night. I sense another monster of a show, something like the Hammerstein shows. Dark Star, St. Stephen, etc.
China Doll!!!
tonight things won't be the same....
Let It Grow - 100% definite
walking around Providence, listening to GD 07251974, how about any of these??
1. Beat It "n Down the Line
2. Don't Ease Me In
3. Cumberland
etc. those first two would sound great with Joan(it sounds great w Donna, lol)
New York shows were epic and last night was somewhat of a letdown for me at Lupo's. I posted up at the bar and had a good view but the sound quality was not that good. Anybody sit in the Mezz. or Floor? How was the sound?
The sound where I was - 2nd row Mezz Right - was excellent IMHO.
althea anyone??????
sound up front on left was very good, but it was hard to hear quiet playing by Barry.
I think tonight I will head up to the Mezz right, unless....
definetly due for an Althea...tho I dont see it being played w/o Chris Robinson. Who knows tho?
Sound is great in the mezzanine. Reserved seats is the way to go in this venue. Close to the stage also. Sound and sight in Strand mezz is way better than Hammerstein, much smaller floor. Dark Star tonight.
sorry folks DarkStar is coming Sat nite in Philly
We'll split the difference. Dark Star Verse One tonight with a Dark Star Verse Two closer in Philly.
Two of everything!!!!!!
For us hypomaniacs, :@) (pigface)
Eyes of the World!!
Get there early if you want to hear the first song
I missed Passenger at the Beacon(subway Eraserhead), but I arrived around 840pm' VERY glad to see it last night.
Last night started around 830pm. I asked a gaurd about curfew, and he said no problem to play 'till1am.
I wouldn't put it past Phil to start at 800 sharp, especially at the Tower.
THE OTHER ONE!!!!
Phil I am sure would love to start on time. However, the doors opened late last night and getting in was a nightmare, so he was being very kind to us by starting so late last night. Even still, people missed songs.
We were on line at 7:40 and it took us over 1/2 an hour to get in, it was just silly.
hey anybody need tickets for tonights show i had a couple buddies back out on me... i live in the area if anyones interested
Sht, I went in early and it took too long. guess I will have to do it again, tonight, even w a seat.
Oh well, SOOOOO worth it.
This band is a really nice group of phriends. Let us all say, AMEN!!!!!Or, if you prefer, OHMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

It's OK, pholks, as a certified hypomanic I am used to yapping to myself. And I am in need of some serious dancing tonight!

Encore: Box Of Rain
ha ha, I am in wireless sales and sell those damn 650s every day and think my job has no meaning - Richard, thanks for the updates and giving me purpose ONTO PHILLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!
nice one! y'all got the Box!!
' We have BOTH kinds of music here at Bob's Country Bunker- Country AND western!'
Yeah, kinda weird, getting the first Box of Rain encore with an average show. Good solid show, good highlights, but not a huge cohesive setlist show. All NYC shows were better than the Providence shows. Still very good, but you can feel the holding back getting ready for the build-up for Philly. A day off, then Philly bound!
Hey...
Every now and again you meet someone who just has an aura of being really happy where and who they are. Richard's one of those guys! A real friendly, outgoing guy, enjoying the F*@k out of himself.
Enjoy Philly..
joe in RI
thanx RI setlist posters
they teased about 5 tunes in that first jam, joan did not sing for about 20 minutes at least
Average show, some peaks but the jams didn't have much direction. Also the first set was very similar to the first set of Friday at the Hammer so that I was a little surprised about. Everything was kind of the same except for "Good Times" but it is all good. I enjoyed Tuesday much more than Last night but I give this one another listen and see what else I come up with.
you'll hear this on the recordings. phil preempts his donor appeal with the following: "Are you guys taking drugs out there tonight? Because the band got really up here tonight. whatever it is, thanks for doing it and helping us make this...."
Yeah, I know he has said that before, but from being there and watching the band's reaction to their performance, I think at least Phil woukd rate this one of the better shows.
The first set was one of the best played so far, IMHO.
Philly should be a High Time for all.
to each its own
Yes. You are the eyes and ears of the world.
Philly should be fun. I will post some tips for good beer, etc. on the Other stuff board. If you like beer, Philly is heaven(next to Belgium).
Generally agree with the comments posted above. For me, the nicest surprise of the show was the Vocals, in particular, on The Weight. Everyone except Barry and Jeff sang and blended well. Joan's take on Sugaree was one of the top highlights of the show. I just wish the vocals were mixed a little higher. Note to Phil – give Joan more lead vocals – I’d love to see them do Pensacola.
For this show, I am almost tempted to change the name of the band to Phil Lesh and his Country and Western All Stars. Many of the songs had that country blues lilt - Tennessee Jed, The Weight, Sugaree, Goin’ Down the Road, etc., and Barry spent at least half the night on the pedal steel, which kept the country flavor going.
The set I saw in Boston last year was a lot more rockin' It was also shorter. As Lazy Lightnin' points out, the jams in the second set at Lupo’s were tight, but sometimes lacked direction. In fairness to the band, the 2nd set was a full two hours and they were trying to experiment with a lot of new things. The modal jam back into the Playin' reprise was especially cool.
A few songs rocked out nicely - Cumberland, New Speedway, Golden Road (nice Larry solo) - but that elusive big rock number - eg, Truckin, St. Stephen seemed to be missing. Even Playin' had an early 70's country flavor. I usually love Playin', and this version was good, but never got too far off the ground. I think having Bobby and a second drummer might have helped here.
In general, the band jelled very nicely. Larry is fitting in much more naturally than when he first joined. Compared to Chris Robinson, Joan was much more on top of her cues, and in general the band has a nice ensemble sound going. Jeff is a very musical drummer – he reminds me of Kreutzman at times, but I prefer Molo’s more aggressive style as he pushes everyone to rock a little harder. Of course Phil was a monster all night long, but I have come to expect that!
In closing, Lupos was a nice venue ($4 beers!), but it was freezing for a lot of the night and there is NO leg room in the balcony seats. Being the old man that I am, I hope they play the Orpheum the next time they come back to New England!
Thanks Phil – Have Fun in Philly everyone!
That looks like a tasty Viola Lee club sandwhich!!! Viola1 > Loose Lucy > Viola2 > New Speedway > Viola3...and y'all got the BOX, so does that mean no stella> box for an encore Sunday. Or can we not expect anything looking at teh last 10 setlists!!!!!!!!!!1
It was a great show.....Lot's of well played Jams
I really like this line up
Thanks Phil!!!
and you New England Zoners kick ass!
Thank you again Deadhead ED!!!!!!!
What a sweet man!
A lot of psychedelic energy from the crowd. Phil introduced the band as the "Trip Factory" AHHHHHHH!!
anyone else hear a daytripper teae before GDTRFB
This run was so much fun, i met a lot of really cool heads, see you guys in Philly!
Good times got us in the right mood, and the band seemed to catch on right away. Cumberland blues was the highlight of the 1st set. download it, it smokes when i would squint i saw a pedal steel and a guitar on fire. Larry played pedal steel on JED, and barry was on there the rest of the set.
2nd set was incredible. I called Viola Lee Blues to open, but instead we got it all over the 2nd set, fine with me! i also called Playin Reprise, and the Playin reminded me a lot of one circa 1972. Box of rain encore was very warm and inspired, i love Phill's voice more everytime i hear him!
This show contained a lot less Joan then the previous night, and for that reason and less adventure in the segues, and jams, im gonna call the first night the best of the run. buuutt whos keeping track? the 2nd set was something that should be on all your computer playlists.
I'm surprised there are no more reviews of this show.
Now that the tour is over I would have to rate this as my favorite show, along with 2/15 at the Beacon. 2/22 had some really magical moments.
During the first set Phil's bombs scraped flakes of paint off the ceiling! This set had some incredibly intricate guitar counterpoint. Much of what I've gathered from Larry and Barry is that they prefer to stick to the traditonal rhythm and lead guitar concept (unlike Warren and Jimmy). Their double helixing lines on Wednesday were some of the best I heard all tour.
The second set had the best Playing in the Band of the tour, a fine Viola as well as some mellower more spacey jamming. Trains while not as tight around the lyrics as in New York, has an jaw dropping jam!
By the time I got to Providence I was already becoming slightly irritated by the frequent repition of certain songs during the New York run. But on Wednesday night it didn't matter at all.
The songs were strung together in a meaningful way and Phil was obviously happy with his band's performance. As for Phil, he was absolutely on fire.
All this is remembered from hearing the show, only once (at Lupo's) as there is no recording up on the archive yet. Give it a listen when it comes up.
The will be a soundboard release along with 2/15, 2/14, 2/18 and a Philly show (just guesses).
Play Dead
Best show of the 13 I saw. HOWEVER, there were 12 other shows nearly as good!!!!!!!!!!!
<img>
Was it cold at Lupos in the audience. I couldn't make the Phil shows there but when I played there it was FREEZING on the stage.
unf'n believably cold!
but you know how it goes. sometimes discomfort brings out the best in us all!
those shows were very 'up close and personal', and the fact that they were swing-time, good old GD-style is a little secret between me and the band, lol.
I have lost touch with reality, clearly!
Going to hear Henry Threadgill tonight. Should be a trip.
