Alligator!!!
Color me jealous. Can't wait to hear that.
Just did a quick google search and found that Lesh played that back on April 13 2000 at the Tower in Philly also.
Also played Alligator at the Tower the Friday after Thanksgiving in '03. What a cookin' night that was!
Caught the 2/11 Beacon show with Warren in the second set. Got so revved I've been boppin' since. Finally decided I needed MORE, so I'm headed to the Tower this Sunday to vibe the band one last time & say thanks for a truly special tour. Figure the saints will arrange an appropriate ducat for me.
See y'all there. I'll be the dancin' fool with the permaburn grin that's happy to see EVERYONE!

VERY PHAT SHOW
just back from an amazing show...the playing was tight amongst all.....Joan was look sexy & hot tonight....although the headphones are kinda a turn off!!
i even called crazy fingers & alligator tonight....Terrapin was way sweet...great opening night i must say!
cant wait for sat & sun now!!!
Nice to see all the philly family out and about!
peace need sleep!
What phun!! Thank you Phil, et al...you know who you are. Oh yeah...I love you Joan!!
Wow, what a fun time at the Tower. This isn't much of a review as it is some memories.
(Rob sang Crazy Fingers)
Joan messed up a lyric at one point, finished the line, turned towards Rob (away from Phil) and yelled, "FUCK!" Another time during Lovelight, she kicked a cymbal. Rob helped out directing traffic a few times, notably during the transition out of Lady with a Fan into Wheel. Speaking of that transition, I felt keenly aware of Phil playing chance music tonight, and the LWAF>Wheel>Terrapin is an example. Mad jams. Barry on the pedal steel sounds so nice. I was sitting 4 rows behind the soundboard, and therefore the sound was excellent. Saw many cool peeps, but want to send a special shout out to Peggy-O (thanks, Bones!!!!), Kate, and Mark, who made sure I was welcome the night before at Brownie's. I had to get out immediatly after the show, but hopefully I can get some hanging out time in tomorrow.
Hmmm -- that's Doogels posting above, not eze.
and on drumz.....
it's Joan Osborne!!!
Hate to say it but I was disappointed. Joan was the lone bright spot with the Althea and she and Rob sounded great on Easy Plateu. But other than a real good New Speedway I thought the show kinda stunk. The No More Do I was horrible - ugh. And I just couldn't believe how slow set 2 was after the opener - people were yawning and leaving. I left during Terrapin - I couldn't take it anymore. The song selection and the slow pace kept killing momentum. Look - it's a Friday night and everyone was pumped up to dance - why all the slow stuff?
Highlights: Althea, New Speedway, Easy Plateau
That's about it. Hope tomorrow is better.
But the night was not a total loss -- I have to say that I never saw more cute young hippie chicks at a Phil show than tonight. I mean there was some serious talent in that place - anyone else take notice of that? Let's hope tomorrow the band puts it together and gets the love vibe flowin'!
One more thing:
WARREN PLEASE COME SAVE US!!!!!
give it up evan... you will drown in your own sorrows like this...
get in the groove and ltgtr, as they say...
TR are you in Philly? Is there a strizzeam up and runnin of this gig?
just curious
I found it...
agree with evan, overall weak show, get rid of the r.a. tunes, crazy fingers>alligator was over 30 minutes then meandered into easy plateau>no more do i, YUK! althea was sweet as was lovelight >mason's children finally they found a groove>today should be better imho
what tune did Joan play drumz on? missed that...
I like the ryan adams tunes....they fit well the this band (and I agree with Phil, Jerry would these tunes also)...
As for a 30 minute Crazyfingers>Alligator, since when is THAT something to complain about...
Get off your high horse people and stop being overly critical and enjoy the music while we have it...Phil is what, 65????? We won't have this stuff much longer...
One thing about this band...they're not in your face like the Q...but still quite interesting and enjoyable...
first show of the tour for me. The whole first set in row hh the sound was not to stellar. the set set seemed very lackluster until Althea> Cosmic, finally got the engines started. Lois looked at me at break and said " they never made me HAVE to dance!!!!" Then they came out for the second set and it was like they dosed during break or something, they were on fire!! Sound was 100% improved playing was 100% improved. No my drugs did not kick in I didn't do any, New Speedway was awsome and so was Bartering Lines. I see no reason to stop doing the RA tunes. the second set was solid all the way through. Aligator was rough but nice to hear, it's a tough tune to play only once every few years and pull it off as well as we all would like and Masons were the first post Q, last time either was played by Phil and Friends was at the Tower in 03 I think now back to bed!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yea hey Richie should I take them to court, and get a 1/2 refund because the first set wasn't as good as the second, I feel like they OWE me 2 great sets a night Think I should litigate!!!
They really are playing new speedway alot! Interesting
Joan does it awsome thats why, I also forgot to say Joan did a great job with Death Don't Have no Mercy, We have a lot of sick people in our lives right now and this tune sure hit home. I felt like last night was for Jerry in some way or another at least thats how I felt during the show. Jerry sure played the Tower alot and loved it there!!! Look at the first set setlist!
What song did Joan play drums on? Was she good?
>>As for a 30 minute Crazyfingers>Alligator, since when is THAT something to complain about--when it's lackluster i guess
what times did they come on and off stage?
Loved it, don't know what everybody's complaining about. No More was weak and Althea never reached its potential, both of those slowed down the first set a bit, but everything else was great. I loved the long spacy Crazy Fingers-> Alligator and Easy Plateau sailed. Second set was a mindbender, demaded your attention. This wasn't an "easy, light and fun" type show, heavy on the minor voicings in the second set, set a theme that I enjoyed. Joan owns this band, she was fantastic. Larry is much more aggressive then in the fall, obviously knows the material better and isn't waiting for themes to develop, leads the way on his own. Rosemary was over the top. If you wanted to rock out tonight wasn't your night, but I loved it. You have to go where they take you. Can't wait for tonight (but need rest!).
>>what times did they come on and off stage?
on at 8:20 ended 12:45 am
Well, I loved the show. Had a great time with great people at a fun venue. Anyone who can remember the Tower scene circa mid '80's knows how much better it is now!! As for the music, loved it, too. No, it wasn't tight, but there is something going on with this band that is stellar. I don't think it will translate to disc at all. Thus, LIVE music must be experienced LIVE. Lots of dancers. I don't think this review thread does the scene justice. During Terripan I was up on the lower loge and at one time I looked up towards the back to gage the reaction from the crowd. The place was going nuts with bodies, hands, legs jigglin all about. Lots of smiles and appreciative karma. True, the crazy-aligator was too slow and long, but Joan's singing was inspiring after that. Second set the entire band was on fire. I agree with whoever said that the band seemed to transform between sets. It really was like two separate shows. Anyway, thanks Al for setting me and my buddy up. I'll be back for the closer on Sunday.
we had a great time.
let it go and let it grow!!!!!!!!
your eyes of the world need to see only the good.
ALSO, very loose security last night, relatively speaking
GREAT BROWNIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
"Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms"

Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms
Lyrics: Traditional
Music: Traditional
Played during the Dylan/Dead rehearsals, but never performed live by the Dead. Played by the Wildwood Boys (Garcia, Hunter, Nelson and Von Mastricht) in 1963. Also played by Jerry with the Great American String Band and with the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, all with rather different lyrics. More recently, covered by Phil Lesh & Friends.
First, the version from the Dylan rehearsals.
Chorus
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
I ain't gonna work on the mill
Ain't gonna work on the farm
Lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
[chorus]
Where were you last Friday night
When I was in jail?
Walking on streets with another man
[Wouldn't even] go my bail
[chorus]
[?] operator
Sister can weave and can spin
Daddy's got an interest in that old cotton mill
[Watch] all that money roll in
[chorus]
[chorus]
The version by the Wildwood Boys in 1963 (thanks to Matt Schofield for this) was pretty similar:
Chorus
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Goin' to lay 'round the shack
'Til the mail train comes back
Goin' to roll in my sweet baby's arms
Now where were you last Sunday
Well I was down in jail
Walking the streets with another man
(Got money to?) go my bail
[chorus]
Mother's a (beauty?) operator
Sister can weave and spin
Daddy has an interest in that old cotton mill
See how the money rolls in
[chorus]
I know that your parents don't like me
They sent me away from your door
If I had my life all over again
I wouldn't go there any more
[chorus]
[chorus]
The version by the Great American String Band was more different. It was sung by Taj Mahal, with others including Maria Mulduar helping on some of the lyrics and the chorus. Thanks again to Matt Schofield for the lyrics.
I ain't gonna work on your railroad, baby
I ain't gonna work on your farm
I'm going to lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
And roll in my sweet baby's arms
Chorus
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Going to lay around my shack
Till the mail train comes back
And roll in my sweet baby's arms
Papa's been working hard grinding corn
Papa's been working hard grinding corn
Well he's grinding corn
Well you know what he's on
Well been on that chain gang too long
[Chorus]
[Chorus]
She said who's going to kiss my ruby red lips?
Who's going to glove my hand?
Who's going to shoe my pretty little feet?
When you're off in your long distant land
She said poppa's going to shoe my pretty little feet
Momma's going to glove my hand
Sister's going to kiss my ruby red lips
And I don't need no man
[Chorus]
[Chorus]
[Chorus]

I thought I saw Joan playing Barry's guitar during one of the jams!!!!!!
I guess that was either a hallucination...OR A PREDICTON!!!!!!!!
I will have to repeat that recipie for tonight, lol.
hey sunra i have been following your reviews ..how did you think show compared to new york...? i agree with you let it go let it grow ..... great words of wisdom i live by too especially when seeing phil..the dead ...gratefully stated ...by the way i went to two of the "weaker" shows in ny and thought they were fantastic.....and i am a veteran of ove r100 shows since englishtown '77
>>What song did Joan play drums on? Was she good?
this was post show... she came onstage, sat at the kit and started playing for a few minutes.. got up...
some of the tapers, who were packing up, urged her back to the kit and she sat back down for a few more minutes...
alls i gotta say is if JOAN likes to play the drums then SHE must have a great attitude !
hey there,
I agree that the 'weaker ' shows are GREAT!
I thought last night reminded me of say 2-14-2006 and 02-10-2006. well played, a lot of between song jamming. however, also reminded me of the hammerstein shows in that there were many jams which fooled some of us 'veterans'.
and they did the alligator, althea and masonals people wanted to hear all tour. in that sense it differred from the 0210 and 0214 shows. I don't recall too many breakouys at those shows.
I loved the NYC and Prov shows, each and every one!!!!!
NYC was so great. the people, snow the venues, etc. Providence was full of love at the shows. what an outpouring of emotion at the end of each Prov show.
and to be home fo®the end of this ride is... a High Time!!
I, too have seen a lot of shows, back to 1978. and a lot of other jazz and classical. also, I played piano, trumpet and sitar for quite a while.
I said to my wife, "this sounds like West LA Fade Away, so that means they are going into Shakedown Street!".
If this is Tuesday, it must be Belgium.
Phil, keep us off balance, it's fun
Thanks for putting up with my rambling.
hey now!!
you all know you're getting an Unbroken Chain 2nite or 2morrow....phil's got phamily in town and he busted it 3/19/95....who's 2 say he won't do it this weekend....
aloha, brett
1 down 2 more at the Tower to go. I hada great time. I loved Joan's wordless vocals during jams and during the Wheel--- at times it reminded me of Donna's vocals during the scarlet/fire transition jam. This was my first time catching Joan live. I think she's a vast improvment over Chris. She's more accurate in her phrasing (though of course not perfect) and is more passionate. And with the way she dances around even when she's not singing, she seems to be having more fun than Chris did...and fun on stage is contagious.
Barry's pedal steel was a lot more present in the mix than in 05 and that's a good thing.
i thought the pacing and song selection for set 1 was excellent. My only complaint was I thought Phil's vocal phrasing on Alligator dragged the tune down (why does he always drag phrases out, breaking up the lines so that verses take twice as long?)
2nd set was slow, weird and wonderful. The Terrapin creeped up on me and the jams between LWAF and the Wheel and TS caught me off guard. I like when the band surprises me, even with material they've been playing for years. And i thought Rosemary was a lot tighter than in Atlantic City 05. Phil seemed to be taking chances during set 2. Sometimes they worked, sometimes it was a bit rough. but i loved being along for the ride
see y'all tonight (and sunday!)
they def had problems during no more do i
and phil was barkin at sipes during a lot of it
other than that i thought it was a fantastic show
crazy fingers
alligator
althea
all in a first set?
thought it was a great show front to back
had a few bumps but what doesnt
warren save us? dear god thats scary stuff
they took chances for sure!
it was a very epolorative nite, whoever thinks long spacey jams isnt cool. go see bobby , which is great (ratdog is very gud).
but whatever the fuck i saw last nite, kicked some serious fucking ass!
go phil!
Philly gets some frickin good reviewing..
Thanks..
Telling another reviewer what they need to do to appreciate the show tho..Is IMO a stretch..
More Johnny Hartford!!!! WHooo HOOooooo!!! We are up for a monumental experience the rest of the weekend. Keep bringin;it Friends!!!! Phil i dont think i even have to tell you!
Great show last night, The Wheel was a fast version! Last Wheel was a little too slow. Songs played in different shows have different arrangements and tempos. Gotta love Phil!
hey sunra ...i think we are on same wave length..i too appreciate al types of music though am noy a musician...keep up the ramble on rosy outlook sunra

WARREN PLEASE COME SAVE US!!!!!
Chis can come save us if Warren's busy. Or they can both come.
By joe wheeler (Jerseyjoe) (12.160.185.126) on Saturday, February 25, 2006 - 07:10 am: agree with evan, overall weak show....
The show had it's moments, but yes, weak overall. All the shows have had stellar moments, but they don't seem to be able to keep it going. Well, except for the entire 2nd set of Saturday Beacon, I cried it was so beautiful. Phil spoiled us rotten last tour with ENTIRE shows that kicked my ass, from start to finish. That's what I hope we get tonight and tomorrow.
By kamloops rainbow (Catchabigone)on Saturday, February 25,2006-09:16 am:the set set seemed very lackluster until Althea> Cosmic, finally got the engines started. Lois looked at me at break and said " they never made me HAVE to dance!!!!"
Yeah, until Althea I thought Phil was mad at us/me. I had to force dancing, never had to do that before, ever. Last tour, couldn't stop dancing, hurt my self a few times. Last time at the Tower the two hallways upstairs were filled with dancers that didn't stop all night- not the case this time. it's not just me, is it....
By kamloops rainbow (Catchabigone)on Saturday, February 25,2006-09:16 am:I see no reason to stop doing the RA tunes. the second set was solid all the way through.
I agree. I like the songs he's playing, RA and all, however, this is the most limited repertoire he's ever given us... like I said, we've been spoiled in the past.
Still had a great time; grateful to be able to go. It's important to be able to discuss when we enjoy the shows AND when we don't. Constructive criticism and open dialogue-that's what review are for. Some of my friends didn't like Chris singing, but no one gets all harsh, no name calling, just talking. And a little teasing.
Phil: There are no words to describe my love for your last tour, that sound, the sound you started searching for at The Warfield, the sound that only you can provide. That's what I'm craving. I hear that Elevator jam in my sleep sometimes...
I'm still gonna listen to all the music you create for me. Thank you
who mentioned Donna?
Joan kicks Donna's ass
this band is great - full stop
This band has done almost 100 different songs in 11 shows, hardly a limited repertoire especially considering that this lineup has hardly ever played together before this tour. I, and everyone I was with or know that was at the show last night, thought that the first set was great until No More Do I (Molo was sorley missed on this one) and Althea (started strong but never developed, and while the fiddle is nice on it I thought that a second guitar would have added some needed punch, it had a thin sound to it). The major theme of the entire show was darkness and introspection, not a not for wild dancing. I suspect that that's what we'll be getting tonight.
I saw this jazz and buddhist guy, Joseph Jarman, who used to play in the Art Ensemble of Chicago, etc. He then went on to lead a Buddhist church in NYC s well as continue to delve into insturmental busic.
Point being what he had to say as his parting words of advice:
"BE POSITIVE IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. REFLECT ONLY THE POSITIVE IN THINGS. DO NOT PASS ON THE NEGATIVE."
send that negative vibe on its way!!!!!!!
Interesting comments on this show last night, a show I haven't heard yet & also on the general nature of Phil's shows.
At the risk of "lecturing" and not actually reviewing ---- (I apologize in advance) ----
I guess reviews are reviews of one's own personal take on things but I still find myself a little bemused by it all. If I was going to base my review on being spoiled in the past, then I'd have to compare this stuff to all the shows I saw in 1977 starting with the second time the GD did the Scarlet Fire combo in May at Chicago.
That wouldn't really be fair would it?
And with the GD, I saw shows that were just cosmic blow-outs and others that were country fests. Comparing them then seemed to me to be kind of pointless.
Comparing the varied shows now and using my personal take would also not really be a review of the show but of myself. For example, I went to three in NYC this time and at the last one on the 19th about halfway through the first set it was so loud that even though I had gotten a great spot about 20 feet from the stage, I had to back up to by the soundboard to protect my 49 year old ears. As a result, my appreciation of the show almost wasn't as high as the 17th when it wasn't as loud and I got into a heavy trance out dance mode up close. ... but when I listen to the downloads, I can tell the 19th was just as good, maybe better than the 17th.
It all depends where you are "standing" at the moment you receive the transmission.
sunra ---
I saw Jarman back in 1974 in Chicago and then not so long ago here in NYC.
A true master with wise words and incredible sounds.
Nice to see someone mention him.
I loved the show! It's always a treat to hear Dead music. Thanks Phil!!
I'm listening to it streaming off the archive right now and the jam>Crazy Fingers>jam>Aligator>Easy Plateau is really quite stellar!!!!
Loving this show! Thanks tapers!!!!
I have to say that I generally get more out of the music listening to it later then actually at the show!
