From what I have seen on this tour, I expect tonight and tomorrow to be even better than last night.

Fuck yes!
Tell us more...
Wow what a setlist! How was the performance? haha dumb question. Just someone hurry up and rub it in my face, so i can get pissed at what i missed.
Thats all that really needs to be said. The show was really great.I am running on nothing but adrenalene(sp) still up at three and can,t sleep. so I figured I would check out some other reviews. I guess all the reveiwers read mine and figured that I said it all. Oh yea I have a friend that said back in 03 that Sweet Joan "Had No Clue" Now I think he's the one with no clue. He stayed home (gigle) She was the deciding factor for me to do these shows and I am so glad I did Joan definitly has a CLUE!!!!!!!!!!
Epic Show
Everyone's taste differs, sure, but for me Friday, especially the first set -- I've listened to it a bunch of times and it's obviously a long-term keeper -- way outshadowed Saturday. Even allowing that Friday was my first show since Reading in the fall, so I was ready to be taken, tonight's execution just didn't do the stunning setlist justice. The band's energy felt down. Jamming between songs, so strong and smooth on Friday, just seemed to lose focus time and again, taking the groove with it. Our highlights are Scarlet, Sitting on Top of the World, Good Lovin', Joan during Caution, Box of Rain.
The crowd tonight didn't lack energy at all, and was downright manic near us in mid-orchestra.
At the moment I am a bit too spent to do a song by song review. I will report this was an A+ show.
A real Sat. night singalong and dance special chock full of sweet jams and healing energy. Just what the doctor (G-force)ordered!
This show was a real joy and a wonderful way to celebrate my brothers LG, Nick and Esse all turning 50 witin 24 hours of each other and reaching their elder status.
Like last night, the show featured a death theme, however the mood could not have been more different. Last nights show left me feeling the bitter, uneven, dark, fearful and sad side of death..(with death having no mercy , the wheel moving much to fast, Mason dying on Monday.... while tonight's made me feel more hopeful about the enevitable. ...sitting on top of the world with the eyes and the world..with a box of rain to ease the pain and love to see us through.
IMO Joan brings out the more feminine side of the music. Unlike the testosterone heavy and powerful Q, this SEXtet with Joan, gives the music a sultry swinglike flavor. Thank you Phil for showing us such a rich palatte and the benifits of changing it up and taking risks.
I'm happy I was able to live BIG tonight! For that, I thank my brothers and of course Phil and his wonderful friends,
Godspeed Nick
AND WE GET TO DO IT AGAIN TOMORROW (actually later today) Aint life grand?
Uncle Al
i had a great time and took my housemate for her first live Dead experience. She's a big Joan Osbourne fan and got to hear some of her fav GD tunes (Scarlet, Eyes, Fire.)
I was psyched at the setlist selection, it featured a few songs I'd managed to never see live before: Sittin' on Top (smokin' with Larry's fiddle solos) and Cats Down Under the Stars. And After 20 Phil shows since '01 I FINALLY got an "Eyes." And I stubbed down to EE (4th row in the pit) for it, so I got to see the interactions up close (including Joan sipping tea between verses!) The "Eyes" had a really nice feel to it--- a bit on the fast side with a lot of aggressive guitar leads-- kinda like a '77 version .
But I thought the show lacked flow. Sometimes the progressions/sequence of songs and jams just makes sense to me. But it seemed a bit stiff last night. I understood the death/rebirth theme last night but the between song jams didn't really hold my attention. It seemed the band was holding back, just following Phil without taking many risks. A number of times things seemed to get quiet when it seemed they should've been raging-- like during the post verses Scarlet jam, during the Good Lovin' instrumental breaks, and during Fire. And judging by last night and this night the band seems SLOW tempo-wise. Often a fast groove will develop in a between-song jam and then Phil will play a very prominent shuffling bass line that slows it way down.
The "Caution" jam was good, but was marred by a fly-like buzz that phil's old 4 string keep making during the feedback and the song. Eventually he gave up on it and switched back to the 6-string. Too bad. I love his "Big Brown" tone when it's working correctly. Joan's rap during "Caution" was good-- a lot more narrative than Chris'. She did her front stage strut and held some guy's hand in the front row for a while.
Joan seems really comfortable on stage and seems to be having fun, even when she gets a bit confused (she had a mid song chat with Rob during "Fire" trying to figure out who was gonna sing the next verse, but it didn't shake her.)
The ending of Fire was interesting, no "Scarlet" " coda; instead it got all soft and made way for a very majestic Morning Dew. Joan phrases the verses a bit different than Jerry, Phil or Warren. She was very soulful and passionate but the tempo did seem a bit too slow.
I think Jeff Sipe on drums is the weakest link in this band. He seems to have a hard time following Phil's quirky sense of rhythm during jams and oftem seemed a bit off. I miss Molo's aggressiveness and synergy with Phil.
Before the encore, some girl jumped up on stage and grabbed Phil by the legs. Security eventually wrestled her away. Phil was good natured about it. After it, he joked about how he should try out for the NFL 'cause the girl grabbed him but couldn't take him down.
Barry's pedal steel on the Box encore sounded great, though overall it was just a so-so version to my ears. It seemed Joan and Phil were out of synch during the "short time to be there" closing line.
So there you go. Some good points. Some bad points. But it all works out. And I'm psyched for night #3.
Phil's voice has recovered from the cold he had up in NYC. I am really impressed by his vocals. Box of Rain was, IMHO, the nicest version I have heard, and I have hear more than a few.
I appreciate the reviews, eapecially the realistic ones.
What perfoection people are seeking or comparing this to sometimes baffles me, lol. What band are they comparing this to? Certainly not the GD I know and love as they f-d up ALL the time in painful ways there at the end. BUT I STILL went to those show and ENJOYED them for what they were. On the other hand I had friends who constantly critiqued the show(even during the show). They stopped going to the GD, and the missed a LOT of great times!
You are the Eyes(and ears) of the World.
My fourth show of the tour, and easily the best of a stellar group.
The first set was uneven, with everyone in the band contributing with missed intros, mis-singings, and other incidents of unplanned "chance" music. Cats Under the Stars threatened to become a slow-motion train wreck, but the band found the thread again a pulled it out of the fire. Cold Roses was sublime.
The Second Set was nearly flawless, and nothing short of monumental. He's Gone caused me to lose my mind, but Phil found the groove and jammed us into a gorgeous Eyes. Watchtower popped and hissed. My first Feedback. Oh My God! The tone coming from Big Brown was so fat, with just the right amount of buzz. Joan literally brought me to tears with the second verse of Fire on the Mountain. That was worth the price of admission by itself. Powerful Morning Dew. Spiritual I Know You Rider brings down the house to close it out! Ka-Boom!
And then...Box of Rain!!! Now its Phil's turn to bring me to tears! Home at last home at last Thank God almighty we are home at last! It took four shows, but I am finally exactly were I wanted to be. Thankyou Phil!
>>>>>>>What perfoection people are seeking or comparing this to sometimes baffles me, lol. What band are they comparing this to? I agree. I've gone to the Beacon-Hammy-Philly run with a friend who compares these shows to the Q. I never heard the Q (live) or the GD for that matter and take these shows for what they are. I have fun in the moment. Last nights show was one of the strongest IMO of the run I've seen. I had a great time!
me, too, and i have done this entire run. i feel very very fortunate to have such a nice band and great fans for this magical February.

... 2nd set last night was stellar, hints of dark star swirling, but it never finally dropped ...
quoting Sebastian ---
The "Caution" jam was good, but was marred by a fly-like buzz that phil's old 4 string keep making during the feedback and the song. "
Well, there's no way to know for sure, but I wonder if that buzz is intentional. The same thing was happening during the Caution jam on the 17th on his old bass, so Phil must be aware of it. When it was happening during the show on the 17th I was watching him trying to decide if it was intentional or not & I noticed that he was doing something that reminded me of a show of the GD's I saw back in 1978. At that show, he was over by his amps pointing the bass at specific spots of the stack almost like he had a map in his head of where to point the bass to get specific effects and I started noticing (I couldn't actually hear it because of what it seemed he was doing) that there were these waves of super low sounds that seemed like the beginning of the wave was starting in the subsonic range and coming up into the range of hearing and then going back into subsonic range. -- like the stuff that he does on Seastones. At that show, it was definitely intentional.
On the 17th, I wondered the same thing.
And like someone posted regarding the 17th show, it was during feedback after all.
I've listened to the tapes from the 17th now and the feedback buzz on the bass seems more organic and intentional than it did to me initially when I first heard it live.
But like I say, there's no way to know for sure, just thought I'd float the idea.
... I'm not sure the "fuzz" from Big Brown IS intentional or if it's more attributed to the idea that Big Brown is a wounded beast ... I know Phil seemed to get off on the sonic quality of the piercing and it sure didn't stop him from laying down a lather of pyschadelic feedback, but other feedback > cautions have not had this distinct presence of "fuzz" that keeps penetrating the PA ... whatever it is, it doesn't stop Phil from swaggering and stroking the immensity of the gorgeous tonalities it brings to birth ...
Phil saves!
That Big Brown Buzz was awesome! That buzzing was absolutely intentional. It was trippy and dark and fat as hell. Loved it!
Thanks Phil for this tour and for a nice weekend stop in Philly - it's been a fun couple nights.
I thought Sat. was definitely better than Friday night - more upbeat and we got some tunes to groove to. Overall they are still missing that oomph - just not leaving these shows feeling like i've seen something special. I will say that Joan has been great. Without that booming soulful voice i'd have tough time paying for multiple shows for this crew. Fun night, a few nice moments - but overall pretty run of the mill stuff. Cold Roses was one of the highlights of set 1 - never thought i'd say that!I think Joan and Rob sound great on some of these RA tunes - they may have something there with that combo. The start of Set two was a real nice He's Gone and Eyes - but then, much like Friday, the show ground to a halt with What Sin - damn momentum killer again! Got it back a bit with a nice Fire after the Caution that I could live without but I was falling asleep during Dew and decided that this run has really ended.
Oh well - still a fun night out - and there were some nice moments. But dare I say i'm looking forward to Ratdog next month because I think that band is better at this point in time.
Anyway -- thank you Phil for keeping that light on!
Great reviews guys!
Sebastian, good to see you around. How have you been?
Need coffee. Post more later.
Classic night. Big time high energy all evening. I hope that you folks who couldn't dance friday night got it out of your system last night. Told you it was coming. They threw a lot of red meat at a saturday night crowd tonight and the audience ate it up.
Great second act of a three act play, tonight we melt.
Joan OWNS this band!!!!!! There are some songs that will never be the same again after hearing her do them (Cats!!!). You are an amazing singer, woman.
BTW, I think the buzz on Caution was intentional as well, insect noises. I wasn't wild about it but I hear the same thing went on in NYC and it's hard to imagine them letting something like that go on without fixing it.
And Barry's guitar was UP in the mix all night long, made a huge difference. The first time I've seen him in 5 shows where he was completely crystal clear in the mix. If you're a Barry fan this show is for you, he brought it last night.
If not for Joan this band would be comatose. The dude to the left of Phil has no clue....like a piece of dead OAK. The drummer is average, i'd prefer to see Joan on drums or Molo. But i do appreciate this great music regardless no telling how much longer this magic will last. Joans energy and sexual energy is absolutely amazing. I'm just wondering when i will bump into her on the street so i can ask her for her hand in marriage and thereafter. lmao..... God bless.
responding to a few things at once:
back to the buzz during "Caution"--- for a while all I heard was buzz and not much else coming from Phil's bass, that's what made me think it was unintentional. But maybe my ears were just tuned wrong. Also when I last saw Caution in Atlantic City, there was no buzz. Also, Phil switched back to the 6 string mid song last night while he stuck with Big Brown for the whole of Caution in Atlantic City. Anyway, whether it was intentional or not if it sounds good on disc then I'm cool with it so i'll have to wait til i hear the show again.
Verve--- i've been good, still kickin' it in Philly. Are you in Philly for the Tower run?
Stephen David--- I think Joan is both a mommy and marrie,d so I think you'll get turned down if you pop the question. She is very cute though...
>>> If not for Joan this band would be comatose.
Dude..you sure you were at the Tower???...
Joan is carrying this band single handedly.....Of course Phil is Phil and will always be the man and will probaly still be the best bass player around when he passes. Rob is solid. Barry and the other dude are ok combo but can't hold a stick to warren and Jimmy. The drummer seems as if he isn't there but overall the music is still great!!!
although the band may have a little road rash and be a little tired
from that epic nyc run, he he, i thought last night was rock solid and they did manage to awake the beast that this band is capable of being. I was on the floor the first set and thought the sound was screwed up there. The theatre floor just doenst get
the sound correct. The Tone/treble was way high and the low end bass too low, I prefer treble high and bass high but just below it, im not a sound man but the tower sound crew should call the Hammer sound crew for some advise. Anyway upstairs the sound was sharp and loud, and the venue is cool an old with fairly kind security.
The Fire /Caution and Sin song were great and the eyes was just
excellent. Oh and the Morning Dew was eerie and gooey and sweet, Joan delivered that package well and Barry sless did some
great mellow Morning Dew noodles at the end, he didnt fan/shred it like some of Jerry's epic Dew's but he did lay it down NICE.
Oh yeah they shook the Tower last night.
First set smoked too. This band can be really mellow and nice and totally rocking at times. Last night was both, but not the roaring monster of the Hammer and Beacon. Loving you kids!
Have to politely disagree with Stephen David; there's a lot of band happening behind Joan. Something tells me that Phil thinks "the dude to his left" (I suggest that you do a little research into who Larry Cambell is) is doing just fine. He had Phil cracking up all night. If you keep comparing this lineup to the Q you're going to miss the point.
also for stephen-
At least have the courtesy to find out "the other dudes" name, who by the way was in Dylan's band for around 7 years and as recemtly as December played a gig in Levon Helm's band with EmmyLou Harris on vocals. I guess people like that and Phil have to settle for so-so musicians?
At least according to you.
That dude to the left of Phil will rip some of the doubters a new one during the Franklin's tonight. Mark my words! Or listen to the last one. LC has 'made it his own', letting it rip without thinking.
Also, that dude and the other dude on guitar know how to LISTEN and BLEND. I, too love WH and JH and JM, but I think this band is much more of a balanced ship, LIKE THE GOOD OLD GD!!!!
What a great time. I have had no problem dancing and having fun with all you wonderful people!!!
PS: saw a lot of people eating brownies (;-@~)
He's no Jimmy Herring thats all i'm saying.....he is good but feel he lacks the focus sometimes...Don't take it personal just opinions be them right or wrong.
steven david...that dude to the left of phil is larry cambell. I witnessed his awesome playing at all the Beacon shows//new years in frisco//and at the HOB in Ac..He looked like he was not feeling well last night He seemed too willing to give all the footwork to barry. I assure you Larry kicks ass. Last night was a great show. I do agree with several other reviews I have read so far that said this show lacked the energy the Beacon shows had. True True//but who the hell cares//just happy to be there PLAF rocks
i agree. i saw him twice in Providence.....maybe he is tired or reeling but just thought he was off his game a bit but the music let's face it the music is the only music in town it still reaches the heights no other music can.....thank you Phil!!!!!
SEXtet - that should be the name of this band.
just my two cents.
last nite looked better on paper, was tighter and faster paced, for dancing. i throughly enjoyed sat nite
but friday was a jammy jam special, with lots of spacey jazz jams. very interesting.
tonight
gonna be help/slip/fran/11./ste steve/ doin that rag/ stagger lee/ mister charlie
quote of the nite, two dude walkin in back of my wife and i.
"i didnt know i had a crush on joan till tonite"
lol
i luved joan since red rocks 2003. she is a great spin to this shit!
"He's no Jimmy Herring thats all i'm saying".....yea he plays more than 1 axe!!!
steven david..you obviously have NO IDEA period Jimmy is a one trick pony and was very lucky to have kept Phils attention as lond as he did to roughly quote phil--"jimmy and I have drifted apart musically....."..larry cambell is one of the great unsung heros of guitar for the past 10 years.please take the time to find out about those who you dony know
i do miss jimmy, but think its a push with sless/campbell, becuase im not a huge haynes fan (hes cool and all, AND I MISS THE Q), but miss warren the least.
i friggin loved ROB!
thought campbell was way more involved on friday
http://members.cox.net/larrycampbell2000/
Evan..When was the last time you saw the Dog? I caught them in April at the Beacon and thought they aren't in the same league as PLAF. I have heard that they have tightened it up quite a bit. Even so...I'll take a night of PLAF over the Dog any time. Kudos to the entire Phil band esp Joan/what pipes on that siren.
joan does not "OWN" this band-- if anything they would be a lot better without her fake stage show
I don't care if he plays 8 different guitars at once......he still can't carry Herrings jock when it comes down to it.......if Larry plays the guitar and the mandoline with his feet at same time i still would rather Jimmy up there.
... um, there's nothing fake about a great, sensual, soulful, talented goddess ... joan delivers on many fronts and did last night as well "what sin, replaces love- tell me this, right now" ...
>>joan does not "OWN" this band-- if anything they would be a lot better without her fake stage show
What fake stage show?
Right on Wonka; Joan has a depth of soul that is a joy to behold. There's absolutely nothing fake or pretentious about her stage presence, she feels it and she expresses it through her entire being. Little Ms. Natural. Chris Robinson was a fine vocalist but his stage presence was nada, zippo, nothing. Joan lights up the stage. And she sure makes Phil smile.
Larry is every bit the musician that Jimmy is, arguably more so, it's just a totally different sound and approach that I'm enjoying a lot. I got tired of Jimmy's machine gun runs and, for what it's worth, Warren's overuse of his Leslie cabinet. I loved that lineup and I'll cherish every show I saw with them but it's time for somethng new and this is it. The whole idea is to experience this music in as many different ways as is possible and this lineup brings a fresh and exciting sound to songs I've been hearing live for almost 33 years now. Don't be left standing on the platform when this train pulls out of the station, it's going to be a great ride.
Hey Big Brown, weren't you one of those bums we saw out there wandering the streets looking for a miracle? Perhaps you should have attended the local Black Eyed Peas or Madonna 'concert.'
Get outta here, Joan is an excellent musical force all wrapped neatly between a superb stage presence.
I do have to say in seeing a bunch of shows this tour Jimmy Herring is by far and away the most missed, in my opinion. I also think I prefer Molo over Sipe on drums. Sipe adds interesting textures and everything but I feel like his playing drags from time to time. For instance they will start a tune at one tempo, and by the end it really will have slowed down. In some cases this hasn't happened but in others it really has. Now I don't know if Sipe is just following Phil, and Phil slowing these songs down in the middle of the Songs, but with Molo this wasn't usually the case. For example if you listen to "I Know You Rider" from Providence this is one of the many instances were the song begins to really drag. I will say that I felt the relationship between Phil and Molo seemed to be more mutual. The both seemed to follow one another in more natural way. When between Sipe and Phil is appears as though it is Phil's way or the highway and he has to follow him everywhere he goes. I also understand that with the exception of red rocks these Sipe's first shows and he has done an amazing job. With a little more time he and phil may really work up some amazing chemistry.
Also with they whole thing on Larry Campbell, he is a monster player. He is why Warren Haynes really isn't missed that much as far as I am concerned. And I love Warrens playing alot, he is an extremely talented singer, songwriter and player. But Larry adds the ability to play many different instruments which adds many different sounds to mix. His guitar playing is similar to Warren in that it is very "Rocked Out" and "Blues" oriented. He also doesn't dominate shows like Warren used to. There are some shows where is sounded like Warren was stepping all over everyone. Yes, he isn't half the vocalist that Warren is but the vocal harmonies have been really been great this tour with Rob and Joan. Anyone who thinks that Larry Campbell "has no clue" wasn't at the 2/18, because he RIPPED!! His solo's were intense, extremely melodic, and really ignited the band to play so well that night.
I would love to see Larry and Jimmy Herring play together on one of these tours, that would be amazing. Barry to me is really great and I have enjoyed hearing him play, but I really miss Jimmy's playing. Jimmy Herring is so incredible and if we ever get a chance to see him and Larry together it would be an amazing combination. Having Rob back has been great and he really should stay in the band. Would love to see the next band to be Phil, Molo, Rob, Jimmy,Larry, and Joan. Just my two cents.
larry very good last...I wonder if sometimes people think all the solos are by Barry, because they're not...nice interplay between the two of them last night
My problem with Larry Lackluster is that when the band and mainly Phil has we the audience and the band flowing as one exploring organism through space time and whatever else you want to say galaxy...Larry Lackluster seems to pull the band and the exploration back.....i don't doubt he is an excellent musician just maybe he needs more time to get the essence and magic of true grateful dead spirit....Joan gets it...in the moment and improvising.....energy, which larry lacks...maybe in time he'll get it ....still a fairly new lineup.I see Phil always trying to talk to Larry about this after songs and trying to guide him to help us reach this collective zen like feeling and not get in the way of that train and pull the reigns back.....when the band sings this darkness has to give its the weight of Larry holding them back we are talking about.....he will come around. It's not about Larry its about the band it the audience when he gets that he will be fine.
Don't get me wrong this is a grate lineup but but let's not settle on being Grate this band can be more than great........dare to be greater and i think they will........if possible starting tonight!!!!!! SAINT STEPHENNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!
he's got it already...you're posting on the zone, and you can't even be bothered to know his name, so I think maybe that's why your opinion received the reaction it did...
by the way, LC more than held his own when he played with Warren
His name is irrellevant i just go by what i saw ...and the music being played....srry if your his bedfellow or whatever or can't take anyone criticising him but thats just too bad.
Stephen, you have a right to your opinion, even if it's wrong......
But calling him names does nothing for your argument.
I have not seen any of this tour, but have most of the NY run,and saw them in San Fran in Dec.Phil was not happy with Molo at those shows,he had to tell a bunch of time to change the tempo.Sipe is better for this line up by far. These guys sound more like the Grateful Dead then the Q,or anything with Jimmy.I prefer this lineup right now,I did love the Q in '01,but they lost some of the spark after that in my opinion.
I never said this lineup was bad....I'm just pointing out as good and fresh as it is it can be better and probaly will.........with each show it seems to do just that....nothing is perfect.i'm just happy the greatest music in history is still being played at a high level. But i would still prefer substituting Herring for Larry.......
Right, wrong, whatever. People hear what they hear. I hope that you have a better time tonight Stephen, this band has a lot to offer.
Who said i didn't have a good time.....?? I'll always have a god time at a Phil show or a Bobby show no matter how good or bad somebody deems it...I just appreciate hearing this music live . And i hope when Phil and Bobby goes someone else is able to come together and bring these songs and tunes to new heights!!!
First show since Atlantic City..thought it was a treat..really really liked Joan..was not prepared to like Cold Roses as much as I did..LC is a great player and adds so much depth to this band..I too miss the PLQ sound, but, Phil's vision was supposed to be an ever changing band that evolves, devolves and then moves on..Jimmy is far from a one note wonder! the guy is fluid! I miss Warren's influence as well, but, thats what I have my cds for, right? I am not a fan of Rob's singing, although it has improved over the years..enjoyed the different direction Mookie brought on the last tour..I'm hoping Phil continues to bring in new folks, bring back the old faves and surprise the hell out of us! You folks who are going tonight? Have a freakin blast!!
yeah, he's my "bedfellow"...what are you, 12 years old?
Well like i said it's just criticism....srry if it offends you so much after all he is perfect he plays like 8 instruments.
Thanks for the reviews everyone. I love living in N Cal...but I hate missing these big fat east coast runs. Thank god for archive, 365, btree and your reviews.
One can be critical without being snide.
Sipe is ok. The band needs a better drummer. Joan is a goddess and she rocks.
Saturday nights Tower show was great. Loved it.
God Bless Phil.
If you have complaints about any of the players, do better.
Be happy that Phil is bringing it at a very high & true level. I saw Vegoose late night, Vegoose stadium, Reading, 3 Atlantic City's, Fri/Sat Beacon, Fri/Sat Hammerstein & Friday Philly. Phil brought the magic and THE HEAT each night! Take it for what it is: A REAL GOOD TIME!
peace
Please understand I don't have a problem with any of the opinions expressed here. I just wanted to say that IMHO this band is as good as it gets, essentially they ARE THE present GD!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to be so happy with things.
I hope I don't crash too hard when this tour is over, lol.
As I have said many times at an excellent show: "This is as good as it ever was or will be".
is that not enough?

Phil's voice has recovered from the cold he had up in NYC. I am really impressed by his vocals. Box of Rain was, IMHO, the nicest version I have heard, and I have hear more than a few. I appreciate the reviews, eapecially the realistic ones.
We enjoy reading the reviews too-especially the realistic ones. Talking amongst friends in the Waterford after is good also because we get to talk to people who don’t post here. What we don’t like is the name calling and suggestions for behavior. Please let’s not tell people to get off the bus or go see Madonna (who doesn’t suck, by the way)
Richard (Sunra) (69.139.1.227) on Sunday, February 26, 2006 - 08:23 am
What perfoection people are seeking or comparing this to sometimes baffles me, lol. What band are they comparing this to?
I sincerely doubt if people are comparing this band to The Dead or The Grateful Dead. Not even the Q… maybe the band from 75 days ago?
evan11 (Evan11) (69.248.3.59) on Sunday, February 26, 2006 - 10:31 am:
Overall they are still missing that oomph - just not leaving these shows feeling like i've seen something special.
Well put. I felt like I had seen something magical after every show on the last tour- granted I missed NJPAC- but I felt so alive and fortunate to have witnessed and been a part of an energy I thought I’d never find again. I’m NOT comparing last tour’s line up to any other line up (GD, D or Q). I’m comparing the way that music made me feel. The last tour awakened a part of me that was in such a deep slumber I thought I’d never feel that way again. I don’t feel this way after these shows.
evan11 (Evan11) (69.248.3.59) on Sunday, February 26, 2006 - 10:31 am:
The start of Set two was a real nice He's Gone and Eyes - but then, much like Friday, the show ground to a halt with What Sin - damn momentum killer again! Got it back a bit with a nice Fire after the Caution that I could live without but I was falling asleep during Dew and decided that this run has really ended.
Couldn’t agree with you more. After Sin, we thought the band had given up. I never saw so many people in the halls completely ignoring the show. Oh, shit, I was in the halls ignoring the show! Normally the only time I leave my dancing area is when I just can’t my bladder a second longer.
evan11 (Evan11) (69.248.3.59) on Sunday, February 26, 2006 - 10:31 am:
Oh well - still a fun night out - and there were some nice moments. But dare I say i'm looking forward to Ratdog next month because I think that band is better at this point in time.
Evan, dem’s fightin words!! Ha! We are looking forward to Ratdog as well!
Enjoyed watching Phil, I have been looking at the stage more than ever this tour and Phil looks like he’s a kid in a candy store, he’s having a blast and for that I’m thankful. I am thankful he is still playing and experimenting. I hope his sound finds it’s way back towards that umphhh that blows us away.
By big brown (Molesh) (207.10.54.33) on Sunday, February 26, 2006 - 12:13 pm
joan does not "OWN" this band-- if anything they would be a lot better without her fake stage show
Heard the same thing in the Waterford last two nights- was that you? I agree she does seem to be “performing” at times; almost forcing it. The conversation at the table next to me, which I had to eavesdrop on, sorry, was about how she’s not a deadhead, it’s disrespectful to the legions of devoted fans to hire someone who doesn’t know the words to the songs we hold so dear. And that Larry’s got a nicer wardrobe.
Also that it was mean, or perhaps a marketing tool, to pull out Warren and Trey and then no one else.
Maybe someone will show up tonight...
Yeah this band is very good but there is alot of room for improvement. I think the sky is the limit thoughh.......i hope they stick together for a few more tours god willing. I appreciate Phil and his continuous exploration and devotion to the music and the fans. God bless you Phil and I love you and i'm not the only one.
of the nine shows I caught, I thought the vocal mix was not very good in the first set, too boomy and muddy...vastly improved in the second set...tower theater is a beautiful and cool venue...I feel in love with the short-haired drink waitress on the left side of the orchestra ...as for the band, the end of the second set came together for me, first half was a little disjointed, but the second set smoked straight on through...although I thought box of rain was better in theory than execution...
as for the buzz from big brown, while perhaps not "intentional" in the sense that it was not present at NJPAC and may be something technically off with the bass that needs adjustment, Phil is 100% aware of it and was actively controlling it, I was close enough to see him laughing and talking with the older stage tech, you could see him adjust the bass and amp controls, reulting in a change in the buzz, and then look up to the tech and laugh about it...he also had big brown up against the stacks again for some of that chest rattling Grateful Dead movie super low frequency feedback...morning dew very powerful as noted above
the girl who ran on stage was completely out of the blue and got to Joan and Phil way before the stage crew could grab her...pink sunglass wearing wookieish type number, I think she wigged Joan out a bit, she forgot her headphones for the encore and seemed a little off
overall, nice show and glad I made the drive
LMAO whats this wookieish type number mean???
herring was just a wanker, a talented wanker but a wanker nonetheless
campbell on the other hand is the real deal and the all-star of last night's show
how some of you prefer the PLQ line-up I just don't know...last night show OWNED any of the PLQ shows I attended...I enjoy the fact that the jams are straight forward and high-energy and not spacey/noodley (which I guess if you are doing drugs is enjoyable, listening to those types of jams sober, on the other hand, is mind-numbing)
Trey and Warren a marketing ploy? Mean? Would people have been happier if they hadn't played at all? Now I have heard it all. "Someone out there's had too much to think" (Captain Beefheart).
If you want the less explorative version of the dead, straightforward so to speak then go see Ratdog. But Phil and Friends are about taking chances and exploring the dark chasms of the music and mind.
exploring the dark chasms of the music and mind...an exploration surely aided by the listener's recreational drug use
if thats your thing thats fine
at the same time comparing Phil with Ratbob is a joke...Doggie shows are worse than Vegas style reviews, Weir has fucked so much with the pacing (esp irritating are the exaggerated pauses in the middle of lyric where he holds the same note for an extended period of time) that the product is not even mediocre...IMO:
Current Phil line-up>PLQ>Ratdog>The Dead
No drugs needed just the music.
All I know is that there were times during the PLQ sets I caught where I certainly could have used something to keep me interested. At the same time I did enjoy those shows...but not as much as last night (or even the winter tour opener in Reading for that matter...which while a little sloppy at times was filled with soul).
Tell me...did you enjoy the Dead's "Space" segments in the 80s and 90s?
I have a bad habit of skipping over long reviews unless they really catch me, so maybe someone already did post what i'm about to say.
I hear a lot of debate about the Q verses the "sextet," but I didn't see ANYONE saying how awesome Rob Barraco is. Give the man the credit he deserves and let's talk about him for a minute!!! I liked Mookie but Rob is always the one who does it for me, and he was ON last night.
THANK YOU PHIL!!!!
glad to see you had fun!
I am jealous of all of you who are going to tonights show maybe downright bitter. I think tonights show will be one of epic proportions. I see a st stephen, dark star, help/slip/franklins. O mannnnnn. Rob is Rob, the man always shows up and is solid. I am anticipating tonights show greatly too bad i'll be in the chatroom waiting for stelist updates then the nigthly stream but hey i can deal with it. Thank you TAPER ROB!!! I like the Q musicly better but i have to say i would rather the Q with Joan singing lead!!! How sick would that be??
I don't know how anyone could complain about last night's show. It was the REAL DEAL and doesn't get any better than that - PERIOD!
I'm actually looking forward to seeing Ratdog at the Beacon...caught them this summer and they actually were way better, heavier, and spacier than I expected.

LMAO whats this wookieish type number mean???"
you know, total space cadet skinny unhealthy indoor sunglass wearing out to make a scene stage rushing me me me rat...like it was the stones at MSG in 1969 or something ha ha ha
I have to agree with Sunra and Davino. You people who saw the Dead...you're not trying to make others believe that EVERY show was transcendant. They weren't!! That's why we chased them around...and that's why we all keep coming back to see Phil...because we know the music AND the players are top of the top of the top...and on any given night, it can take you somehwere you STILL haven't been!!
While you're all entitled to the criticism and the hating (couldn't BELIEVE I saw some clueless dude walking around with a "Ryan Adams Sucks" TShirt...dude, leave it at home!!!), none of that helps any of us get to where were trying to go!
I truly believe that if you say you love this music and the scene and the vibe, but then go on to criticize Sipe or Campbell or whoever...you're still missing the point!!! Still!!! These Phil shows are mostly great, often special and occassionally other-wordly!! If you're looking for more than that, I hope you find it...maybe in the next life!!
In the meantime, thanks Phil, Joan, Barry, Larry, Rob and Jeff...and all you people who keep making this all possible.
Of course these shows are mostly great. The gesture alone of playing this music is great and most often never dissappoints....i never left a Phil and Friends show and said hey that show sucked....even it wasn't great it was the most spectacular show i ever seen....but it's ok to criticise and point out things you notice...about the music being played...in hopes it will get better .......if it doesn't so be it , it is still great and other worldly with or without drugs.......
wow last night 2nd set was the bomb!!! felt so many different emotions. energy was really off the hook. joan singing the dew and the rider to follow put me in the place i needed to be. thanks phil have fun tonight.
Who said anything about drugs?
hey whatever floats your boat.......
My boat done floated down the lazy river...long, long time ago.
One more thought..saw 5 shows on this mini-tour, first 3 Beacon and Fri and Sat in Philly. All were great, both Philly shows were special, but Sunday at the Beacon was off the hook!! Hope everyone going tonite gets what they want.
Peace...
personally I thought the 1st set>2nd set...the feedback and caution slowed down the 2nd set after a smoking watchtower...still though the show ended very strong with I know you rider and box of rain...definitely top Phil show (only have seen four but listened to hundreds on disc) I have ever witnessed...If I had to rank them:
1. 2/25/06
2. 7/29/01 because it was my first although musically I preferred...
3. 11/21/05
4. 11/30/03
Overall I feel I have been blessed with catching 4 top rate shows which all rank in the Top 20 of overall concerts that I have ever attended.
I would be there again tonight for what I am sure will be the crown jewel of the tour except for the fact I have a damned 10 AM exam tomorrow morning which I am still studying for (in between posting of course!) I have been craving an Unbroken Chain (haven't witnessed one since my first show...at the time I was unfamiliar with some of the Dead material, including UC, now five years later its my favorite song of the GD-JGB-Weir-Hunter (etc) catalogue. I know it, as well as HELP>SLIP>FRANKLINS will be played tonight and it sucks being stuck here only 10 minutes from the Tower. Oh well...
DUDE THE F WITH THE FINAL GET TO THIS SHOW!!!!!!
yeah, definitely glad I wnt down for last night in philly, a good cap off for the run.
highlights for me included: a totally smoking jam in eyes, phil was doing some crazy ass shit! look forward to hearing that again.
feedback>caution was sweet of course, some HUGE bombs were dropped! however, I have to say, I think the buzz disussed above was unintentional. phil really didn't have big brown on for as long as he did in the other shows. in fact, he switched back to his normal one not far into caution at all. I had pretty sweet seats in row ddd in front of larry and I found it interesting that on big brown you can see litle labels pasted by the knobs, I can only assume they explained what each knob did to remind phil!
morning dew was definitely sweet. 10X better than the one in nyc, which despite many great reviews, I found rather flat.
BOX was great. I was both glad and surprised to hear it. it seemed as though phil had re-arranged the ending. I imagine they also did it this way in RI? regardless, I look forward very much to hearing this to see if it was as cool as I remember!
as for that chick who fucking rushed up on stage, that's bullshit. phil and joan both looked pretty thrown off by it, and rightfully so. it seemed like even the other tour rats/wookies/whatever that she was with were pretty damn embarassed for her. I ran into zoner, louie lardo, right after the show ended sitting right behind me, and he commented that she should be banned for life. I laughed and had to agree. I've never seen such a thing.
GREAT seeing a bunch of zoners, as always! great meeting a bunch more fot the first time!
a HUGE THANKS to MSG man who drove both there and back with bpk and I. thanks a ton, man, I owe you big. I definitely would not have been able to do that show if not for you! thanks again!
Last Tour > This Tour > The Q > Ratbob > all other music > The Dead
So she wanted to give Phil some love....cut her some slack....She couldn't control herself..Phil turned into a comedian with that comment about the NFL..lmao, the man really can do it all....if his music career doesn't work out he can always go into comedy!!
another thought I had during last night's show was that I really do dig the RA tunes. I think I am definitely in the vast minority on this in talking to others at the shows, etc.
I just think it's great to hear these new jams in with dead classics. phil really seems to get into them very much and oftentimes, imo, they go to really cool places! it's just like when the TABA songs were out, even maybe cooler as far as jam structure goes. just as of this tour, although I guess he did a bunch at vegas and nye, he's got a bunch of new songs (which for the most part I consider great) to throw in w the dead classics we all know and love.
and stephen, what really bugged me about the chick was that I thought about how that might have made phil and joan (and anyone else) nervous. meaning, who knows, another reason not to play shows, or at least as many, or maybe at that venue, or who the hell knows. however, I for one was embarassed. I thought it made us all look bad.
I think it was taken as harmless and Phil seemed to get a kik out of it. All in the name of love.
I'm sure Phil has been in a lot more dangerous places and seen much flakier behavior than when the chick ran on stage last night.
Think Altamont for example.
It most likely only phased him momentarily last night.
I wouldn't worry about it.
sure, she was probably harmless, but actually, with what happened to Lennon and more recently, Dimebag Darrell, I think as a "rock star", you'd be pretty freaked out if somebody rushed you on stage...all it takes is some spaced out drug casualty or someone who's delusional and thinks she's Joan or whatever...fuck that
Yeah, I thought of that after I posted.
You're right.
(Hey I just checked your home page, cool - that Itals album - Brutal Out Deh is one of my favorites)
thanks!
John you need some valum dude.......or a really good show.....yeah she was hiding the revolver in her vagina but just before she was going to shoot Phil the authorities grabbed her. lmao
funny guy
I bet Harrison was laughing...
You seriously think people like Phil Lesh don't consider things like this? It's kind of an established fact that public figues sometimes become targets of wack jobs, I didn't make this up...
and thanks, I just caught nine great shows...had a blast at all of them...of course, I did take valium before each due to the fact that I'm so uptight
oh wow does this sound good. i love it. i want to be there.
i was dancin aside of the dready sister who jumped up on stage. she was totally harmless but should not have pulled that move.
I witnessed both Friday and Saturday night shows. Usually never one to criticize, the sound Friday night was the worst I have EVER heard. I cant tell you HOW they played, since I COULDNT hear the shit. Saturday night, however, just to make sure that I could hear it, I surfed down right in front of the speakers. I heard EVERY single note that was played, and I can tell you ALL, for sure, it was hotter than hot. It was SMOKIN HOT. 2nd set Might be one of the greatest sets Ive ever heard (since 72, yup thats right). All the right moves at all the right times. Campbell had to give Phil a nuckle five since he knew they nailed it, and redeemed themselves, and all of us from that slow motion train wreck of a disaster on Friday night. Most of the great jams came from Barry Sless, who has impressed me beyond words. Joan is an angel before our eyes. Campbell exploded on Watchtower. The Eyes was one of the tightest and prettiest EVER. BUT, that DEW, that DEW, was EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN SEARCHIN FOR. And now, now Ill keep searchin, searchin for that sound, again and again, as we all do.......SEE YA AT THE NEXT ONE, AND DONT EVER STOP. THANK YOU PHIL!!!
Given the fact that I sat in front and center on the rail last night I'm finding it rather hard to be objective with regards to the show..
HAD THE FUCKING TIME OF MY LIFE SEEING IT ALL UNFOLD RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME SURROUNDED BY SO MANY GOOD FOLKS!!!
I couldn't hold back and wound up looking a the setlist down by Joans mic stand..HOLY FUCK were we about to get down! I wasn't even mad at myself for giving in. I dance with my eyes closed a lot of the time and found it a bit weird getting used to being in the sight lines of the band and just about everyone else. As cool as it was to see Phil strummin' the Modulus up close, the look in Joans glimmering eyes, the nuances and glances of 'the friends'....I'd kinda of rather be standing looking down at the stage from the lower balc at the beacon or dancing freely in the stands of RFK on a summer night long ago (alright I'm spent and starting to ramble already) and it WAS cool resting my beer on the stage on having Phil watch us burn down and get hammered
Scarlet was good building, surging fun with a mammoth heart of gold band jam by Barry. It 'twas the freakin Cats that was on my mind...god damn did they settle in and groove this proper. Nice trade offs, awesome dancing and singing from Joan and PHIL THUMPIN JGB...THIS MAY WELL BE AS FINE AS IT GETS RIGHT NOW AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT IN TIME IN THE EARLY PART OF 2006...:::PHIL THUMPIN JGB:::...
Ran for beers during C Roses but was glad to make it back in time to take in and enjoy this tune
SITTIN ON TOP OF THE WORLD (Rob B KICKED ASS ON THIS) G LOVIN AND GOLDEN ROAD WAS AS FINE OF A ROWDY GOOD TIME STOMP DOWN KNEE SLAPPIN AIR GUITAR HEAVEN AS THERE IS TO BE HAD. I LOVE THE WAY PHIL 'CRASHES' THE END OF GOLDEN ROAD...WATCHING THOSE TWO LAST STRUMMS (SOME GIRL NAMED ME THAT AT THE FRI HAMMERSTIEN, 'STRUMM', I'LL TAKE THAT AS A NICKNAME ANYDAY) HAD ME WAYYYYY FIRED UP ON INTO BREAK
THINGS GOT REAL FUCKING SERIOUS DURING THE EYES...OFF TO THE SOARING LAND OF GREEN AND BLUE CASCADING GLORY. PHILS EXPRESSION WHEN HE STEPPED UP TO SING HIS LINES WAS ONE OF INTENSE LOVE FOR HIS BROTHER JERRY...BEYOND AMAZING, REALLY
enjoyed What sin is love and Watchtower but it was
the up close gander at big brown that I has my head spinning...watching Phil with the 4 string is flat out primal...they RIPPED CAUTION and had us in a frenzy until Joan had the guys down front sporting wood with a sexy ass stroll up and down the rail. It's too funny watching the look on the bands faces while she's out front mixing it up...kinda into it yet slightly uncomfortable
they had Phil turned wayyyy up for Fire and bless 'em for it
...the dew...
man this was as heavy of an experience as I've had at a show. I had peaked at the setlist again but it made no differnence with regards to the hair standing up on my arms as the 1st recognizable notes rang true....
I said to my rail brethren Bones, Jimmy is Amazing and Schmegg, "hands down on the stage" and there it came...
...:::the Dew bombing intro:::... rattling our fingers and stirring our souls, it's a moment I'll never forget
Joan did an insanely good job
Phil had the SWEETEST jam that could be imagined in heavens unchangable heart, it kept going and going until Sless stepped it in a bled Garcia...they mingled and mixed and Jerry was never ever more alive than in those fleeting yet eternal moments
Rider was the perfect rowdy smilefest to bring us back to the party after having our spirits uncaged
Box.....it had to be and says it all
oh yes!!!
the dosed out wookie chick was so fucked up. Loooking back it kind of funny but I was absolutely terrified while it was going down...
is Phil beiing attacked by a crazy bitch!?? WTF!!!
Do we need to save him and toss her off the stage?
Securty came with the quickness and Phil saved the day with some humor...
"whoahhhhh, she could play in the NFL..
BUT SHE DIDN'T TAKE ME DOWN" HAHAAAAAAAA
FUCK YEAH PHIL....ROLL HER DOWN THE LINE BOY,
DROP HER FOR A LOSS...
TAKE HER DOWN TO A COLD RAIL ROAD.. AHH NEVERMIND
I REMAIN STEADFAST IN MY RESOLVE THAT 2/15 WAS THE SHOW OF THE TOUR AND AN ALL TIME CLASSIC
THAT SAID, OUR LOVE WAS AS REAL AS IT'S EVER BEEN LAST NIGHT
Phil and the Grateful current head west and the winter will soon break out here on the east coast. Phil kicked our ass, inspired and impressed and has us glowing with the love he brings
can't help but day dream of what Sir lesh has on tap for us next...
please maybe consider a full set down the road with the four string??!!
once again and always
THANK YOU PHIL!!!!!!
Mississippi river, so big and wide
Blonde-headed woman on the other side
Now she's gone, gone, gone and I don't worry
'Cause I'm sittin' on top of the world
BAH NEH NEH NEHHHHH
^ keyboard guitar
nice post, skins. I could totally see you dudes rockin' out to my left and up front... you, bones, and bpk. towards the second set I spotted jia and greg. can't remember who (if anyone) else.
but yeah, I didn't really touch on the first set in my initial review.
definitely enjoyed cats; i think the best I'd heard it. like I said above, I love the ra tunes. totally dug cold roses. sittin' was good, but I think this was the third (?) time I saw it. good lovin, while fun, wasn't as serious a tune as I was looking for at this point. golden road made up for it. 'twas good...
during setbreak, I went outside to have a cig and went back to my seat twice. both times I went back in, I thought about grabbing a beer, but it was more chaos than I was willing to do, dealing w that.
as I came back the last time before the show stated and found my seat (next to this random dude w the good {ddd} tix fron too board that nf hooked me up w, thx!) the young (mostly clueless, imo) tour kids had tried/began rolling in. I was a few seats in, but in the two seats between me and the aisle were this generally non-dead (again, imo: the way I was seeing things) head drug user, with his pretty cute hippy gf, who was more (to her credit) into the good jams.
regardless, by the end of the show (and it came in waves) the young tour kids were totally over in the aisle to my left. after phil made his donor rap, this is where the young girl jumped up from. I really did see the whole thing. honestly, trust me: even her friends were embarassed and saw the foolishness of her actions.
then again... I guess I was pretty high. I could be mistaken in my interpretations, but I really don't think so ...
yo Ros
I had heard you were near, was bummed I didn't run into you. Glad you at least got to see me 'representin' with the burgundy and gold
I thoroughly enjoyed myself at this show. I was 4th row center, right on the aisle, thanks to GDTSTOO. Mailorder rocks! Thanks Ruby!
I noticed that Phil didn't seem to happy with Sipe, he had to direct him several times to bring it up or down.
Joan is great, I love her stage presence and her Caution rap was great. Morning Dew was sublime even though It's not my favorite.
Since the review threads don't disappear into the archive, I am going to put these photos in this thread so people can refer to them for historical purposes:
" I'm not sure the "fuzz" from Big Brown IS intentional or if it's more attributed to the idea that Big Brown is a wounded beast ... I know Phil seemed to get off on the sonic quality of the piercing"
Definitely on purpose and the FUCKING BOMB!!!
Joan does not own this band. Her voice is amazing, but, like someone else said, I like to close my eyes as well. Sometimes she was a little too much for me to look at. However, she DID it for me for sure.
The eyes was my favorite part! It was truly magical for me. I am still feeling the glory.
Great pictures Chris, thanks for sharing.
Doogels,
"The Sextet"
almost lost my coffee on that one
I'm shocked at the varying opinions on the Friday and Saturday shows at the Tower. Not that everyone isn't entitled, it just seemed like EVERYONE was having fun throughout both nights. Particularly from the NSB on Friday through the box of rain on saturday. I LOVE this line up. I was shocked by their desire and ability to push themselves and each other to really interpret the music. Did you notice, though, that on some tunes they payed total homage to Jerry. Scarlet and FOTM as examples - barry and Rob were quoting jerry riffs throughout that song. Meanwhile, NSB and death don't were totally new interpretations.
>>>and found my seat (next to this random dude w the good {ddd} tix fron too board that nf hooked me up w, thx!)
Thanks for posting this, nice to hear you did enjoy them.

Tell me...did you enjoy the Dead's "Space" segments in the 80s and 90s?
LOL!! "Flip The Tape"
Nice Photos"deadlikeme", Thanks for posting!
I had such a great time at these shows(fri, sat)kind of a let down to be home again and going to work. But I think this run of shows were epic and feel so very lucky to be still going to see Phil. Friday night I had 4th row right side very nice. I was kind of bummed to have lodge row EE on Saturday but they turned out to be great!! One of my biggest memories of the seven shows I saw were from the lodge at The Tower. I was looking down and just watching Phil dancing back and forth with his bass! The sound was very good up there. Wow what a good time!!
Phil Delivers yet again!
IMO Sunday night at the Tower was a strong night for the band. Saturday night second set was a little too much Joan, even though I appreciate her energy, Morning Dew dragged on. It would be beneficial if Barry or Larry could actually step up and sing.
I am not "bashing" the band but merely commenting on what myself and others around me felt. Please feel free to comment....I enjoy the debate.
no audience recordings up yet?
will this be a Phil DSBD????
hope so.....
I'm with ya on that one sunra!
Can't believe this show hasn't turned up on the Archive yet.......
I'd love to hear the Dew in SBD clarity, but I won't be surprised if it's not the show Phil puts out. It could just be me, but it seemed like the Saturday Berzerker Energy reacted to this performance more than was worthy.
I had nearly written and sworn off Saturday concerts of any kind, but then that Dew blindsided me......That's another thing, I'm surprised I didn't see much reference in this thread to the Dew.
