Damn, they're gonna ban Phil from playing places with balconies if this keeps up. Take care of yourself there, J R. Shut out of a show, ouch, been through that one. At least you've got the net to find out what's going on. Doesn't sound like any special guests have shown up for the filming yet. Perhaps this set?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Terry Jones (Teejay) on Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 12:18 am: Edit Post

I feel bad for Jellyroll, obviously the person who fell, and for the all the astral travelers who got a unexpected frightening detour . . .

I hope no one was seriously hurt. Fuck that sucks, especailly to have someone fall on you. WTF is going on in SF.

Jellyroll, sorry bud, that sucks too. Hey it might be worth going to jail over though. Maybe you should try to get back in.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By David Sandlund (Java_dave) on Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 12:35 am: Edit Post

So the conversation would go something like this:

DVD Director: So Phil, any ideas on ways we can spice up the DVD a little?

Phil: Well, we had a guy fall out of the balcony over the New Year's show, that was kind of dramatic...

DVD Director (rubbing his hands) Yes...Yes...

Phil: I've got it. Since he ain't playing these shows with me, I'll get Ryan to take an extended stage dive during Friday's Intermission.

In your honest opinion. Do you think this warf. run or the 12/17-19/04 run was the one.

IMO the 12/2004 had alot involved, musicians, themes, etc and was amazing!!!

May 18/19 2006 had a few very interesting players a lil jazzy w/ sco and osby but thought dvd, IMO would represent an era of plf and not just one moment.

Just my 2 cents

>>>>>>>>i wonder if those were the same japanese dudes i met on the floor at the 5/13/05 warfield show..sounds like the same description!!!! they didnt speak english and were really cool..i went to the show alone and ended up standing next to them right in front of the stage on the floor, they saved my spot for me the entire show...never one word spoken except smiles, smiles, smiles.."we made a fine connection, Lord you can see that its true"

We have been running into some folks from japan at alot of the shows over the last couple of years.
Met this guy "Taka" at the philmore in denver a few years back. Very nice dude. He dosen't speak much english but we seem to get along fine.
He has been at the warfield and we recently saw him with some friends from japan at the Fox in hotlanta. Always has a smile and digs the tunes to no end.Ran into some other japanese folks at a hotel out at jones beach. There seems to be lots of Headheads over there.
We are everywhere. Peace K

if you're going to make a DVD, may as well do something worth recording...:-)

as much as yesterday's show made me wonder whether it was worth $50, tonight's show showed just how good it can get.

no Ryan songs?

It's sort of sad that Barry wasn't there, since he seems like such an integral part of where this band is right now...

As a Dead fan, set lists from this run look extraordinary, but as a Phil fan, I would like to see the DVD have some of the post-Dead stuff -- like the Ryan songs, 1000 Stars, Walrus, for example -- that has made PLF an exceptional band in its own right.

I'll make it short cause I'm pretty fried from the 5 1/2 hour drive back home to Ventura. Let me just say Thank You Phil for breaking out all the stops and performing 2 Awsome shows, what great set lists. Last nights second set was just amazing.
I havent read all of the recent posts. But unfortunately there was fallout from the balcony again lastnight. WTF? About a half hour or so into the set-break some dude ran full speed ahead down the middle section stairs jumped up on the back railing of the Lower Balcony and took a Swan dive over the edge of the Balcony. Unfucking - believable. I was up in the Bal6 section when we heard a sudden roar and a big thud and we were like what the hell was that.

I couldnt see what the outcome was on the floor from my vantage point but it was definately a scarey situation. I hope no one was seriously injured on the floor. I am curious to hear from anyone else that actually witnessed this and has any more info.
After a long delay the band came on around 11:05 and totally blew us away............ I heard of folks stage diving but this is getting ridiculous.........

Sick, sick, sick show! The Caution featured a huge Feedback sandwhich and included Big Brown. Whole damn theater was vibrating like mad!

I was in the balc and saw the dude take the dive into the floor. It was unlike anything I've ever seen. Very disturbing! I thought for sure I had just watched someone commit suicide. Word on the street was that both the guy and the girl he landed on were OK. Banged up, but OK. Unbelievable.

But the show...The show...The show was un-freakin-real!

Thanks for the posts. I can't wait to see and hear these shows.

Having a real jonesin' from reading these reviews. Sounds like Phil and Friends will survive without the 'Q' lineup, and that the complaints regarding that are simmering down. Molo does a great job, of course.

Can't wait for June 30. Wish I could catch every show, but not destined to be..

My wife and I were sitting in the balcony during set break and saw the jumper from a distance of about 20 feet. We were talking to the folks in the seats next to us when a young man climbed up onto the rail above the lower loge and dove over the lower loge, and over the edge of the balcony. I was turned slightly away and only saw the motion on the periphery of my vision, but my wife was looking directly at him. She said he was young and lithe and seemed in control of himself--not drunk or wobbly. I recall it as a very fluid, very deliberate, catlike motion. From his diving spot he managed to clear the entire lower loge and go over the edge, but he hit the railing with his lower torso and folded into the side of the balcony on the way down. Witnesses from the floor said he “tumbled” through the air before landing on a woman below. We couldn’t see that from where we were, but we did hear a loud, muffled thud when he landed. The whole thing happened so quickly that it took a moment to fully grasp what had transpired. There was a moment of shocked silence, then a gasp went through the entire crowd. Then there was a long period of time during which we couldn’t see what was happening on the floor, so we couldn’t tell how badly the jumper or his victim were hurt and what was being done to help them. All we could see is that every one on the floor was turned away from the stage and looking toward the spot where he landed. Finally, after maybe a half hour, some clapping broke out when the jumper and victim were taken out in wheelchairs, and slowly things got back to something like normal. No serious injuries is what we heard through the grapevine in the venue. Very, very lucky, if true.

>Wonder what songs if any Phil played last nite in memory of Ramrod..

heard once that "the other one" was ramrod's favorite song. not that i know, but that one last night sure would have been one hell of a fitting ramrod tribute if so. boneshaking...and "the other one" as an encore? holy shit.

friday night's show was ridiculously good. consistently throughout the first set, buncombe, botb and i were exchanging "holy shit! did that just happen?" looks.

and here's a new one for me. at some point last night, the power of it all HEALED ME, or at least part of me. i came home after the show, took out my contacts and put on my glasses. i'm pretty blind and have worn glasses since high school. suddenly, my glasses were very blurry on one eye. this morning, i same story with my contact...all blurry in the one eye. i take the contact out and discover that i can now see perfectly out of one eye! the big "E" on the eye chart used to be blurry, but now i can read signs around me perfectly. what the? i was blind...but now i can see. wahoooo. maybe it was seeing joan in that dress again.

Thanks Jeffrey for the explanation. I felt the guy fall but was facing the other way. The woman he landed on was next to me. I thought he must have jumped (rather than simply fallen) since I felt him come from behind me and he ended up in front of me. A friend was looking at me and saw the guy coming down doing the tumble. He thought for sure that he simply keeled over the railing. Your explanation makes sense.

She was out cold for a good five or six minutes but seemed OK once she came to; dazed but talking and sitting up. Air dude was conscious the whole time and, while there was initial talk of a broken neck, he was also taken out in wheelchair.

The whole thing was scarey and simply fucked up. What the hell. I mean I'm all for getting high, but how about keeping a foot or two planted in reality. The last two shows I saw included divers. Not good.

No review section??? hmmm...

I'll save the bulk for later but this was about as intense of show as I have ever seen. First set was good but choppy. I think many people are torn between which first set is better but I personally loved the first nights (even though many people didn't)

The second set was unreal...the uncle johns and eyes were intense. THe whole show was intense and I remember looking around during the 3rd set dark star and it seemed like 90% of the balcony was on their feet. The band was playing the crowd and had them wrapped around their fingers. Just an amazing display of power....when I go to a show...THAT is what I want to see.

The whole jumper shit was wild. I had this phishead from NY next to me who kept making jokes about the situation. Personally I din't thik it was very funny...there was some seriously crazy shit going down and I am more than happy to hear that everyone is alright.

Of my approximately 20 years of going to shows...this is one I will never forget.

Jumper guy should get 30 days (and some professional counseling).

Sounds like they were awful lucky he caromed off of the balcony. With his momentum slowed he still hit that girl hard enough for her to be unconscious for 5 minutes. It could have been worse.

Hope the sister who was hit is okay. Sorry your show got ruined by a drama queen.

damn jumpers, this is the second one i have seen in the last 2 phil shows iv been to. i saw him from the floor. i was just kinda spacing out waiting for the next set to start and all of a sudden i see a limp body tumble past my feild of vision and litteraly smash into a group of people. i diddnt even bink, i just kind of sighed and took a step back as the whole crowd either swarmed up to see what happened or ran away in horror. :-( :-( :-(

anyhoo, as most have said this show was fucking MIND BLOWING!
unbroken chain was so dead on in every way.
phil was in rock star mode big time, when he took out big brown he held it by the neck with one hand right infront of his stack while molo and scofield went of on this crazt climactic jam, then BAM bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum. caution, seemed like phil was trying to bust this song for most of the night, i could have sworn that cumberland was gonna be caution. this dvd has enogh material now to be epic. the walk home through the tender loin was noice and colorful too :-)

This show was EPIC, i stood up front for all of the 3 sets, scofield & campbell, of the fn hook!! The jumper aspect created a hugh hurdle for this band to get over. We witnessed something BAD used to show us how care & compassion are put first when it comes to someone's life. PLF then stepped up and gave us 110% healing energy that resulted a performance that was one of the best shows i've seen at the Warfield. I'd have to give it a 9 IMHO
Caution W/ Big Brown, still feelin it this morning!!

Thanks Phil ....yo da MAN!

I was at the show Friday night and wanted to add a few comments.

The guy fell he did not jump. It was an accident.

The following is my opinion based on seeing the GD, Jerry, Phil, etc 300+ times. This band may have had the vocals well rehearsed more then other P&F bands especially Joan who sounded great. What these shows missed on was the style, tone, sound, and musical interpretation of the guitar parts. Both are great guitar players, and showed this throughout the show. However they both missed the psychedelic aspect of the music and the guitar leads that are an important part of the music. The jams often sounded more rock, blues and jazz then psychedelic. I am not saying it was bad or that I didn’t enjoy it. I will buy the DVD and go see this band again. I also understand that the idea of P&F is to have different musicians make the music their own and use the music of the GD as an envelope for improvisation. For example during Unbroken Chain one of the most important parts of the jam is the way the guitar lead layers over the changes in the rhythm of the song. At the show on May 19th the guitar players didn’t even attempt this layering and texturing of the music. Once again they did show off some interesting leads and took the song in a direction that was interesting but they could have done this in addition to style that was part of the song when it was written.

I hope everyone takes these comments as constructive criticism. All too often reviews are “wow what a show”, “what a set list” without any real meat.

to Markc - the guy jumped. the only accident happened to the woman he fell on. saw the set up and the arms spread out and the jump. he arced over the 3 rows in the lower loge and his foot caught on the outer banister in front of the first row. it was a horrible thing to see. according to an usher he was karate kicking his way down the stairs from the balcony. I didn't see that part, but saw everything else. thanks to the fates it sounded like everyone would be ok.

a lot of the vibe in the place last night went south after that. saw 2 others get ejected or carried out of the balcony and a fight nearly break out on the floor. I've never seen a night like it. Very wierd as the show was really tight.

Mark...I agree with you that the show did have a very rock feel to it, much more than usual however I completely disagree on "What these shows missed on was the style, tone, sound, and musical interpretation of the guitar parts."

To each their own...just my .02

I think it's sad that potentially the dvds will cut out a lot of the music (a shows worth?) and it will be lost until a far away day.

I was in the lobby when they carted the dude out who came down from the balcony. He looked more angry than injured, though he was marked up some. I know it made a sick thud when he hit. From where I was in the balcony, yes the guy did jump, it was like he was diving into a pool from a diving board.

I've never seen a large group of people have loud fun and then all of a sudden everything went quiet in the whole theather, and some people started crying. Many were adjitated. I did not witness any fights as it seemed everyone was respectful of the circumstances and puttting aside their interests in the interest of helping make space for the people taking care of the victim (the lady who he fell on) and the diver. It was a relief when it became clear that both were more or less OK at least in terms of consciousness and no apparent spinal injuries.

The stage and band were very aware of the situation. And the upbeat second set played into this, the sense of UJB talking about stuff by the rising tide...

Well, if it really was Alton Kelley's son (that's Kelley as in Mouse/Kelley if you don't know), I doubt he was working for the man, but the chances are greater that he got overcome by the Owl. I wouldn't wish harm on him or anyone, but he sure did decide to impose himself on everyone else's (especially the lady he landed on's) trip. Maybe better than a 30 day stint in the pokey would be to ban him from Phil shows for a year. He should also have to buy the lady he landed on a tour pass.

Suppose the "Caution" was a message?

Not to make light of what was very uncool, but it would have topped off what was an already astounding show had Phil replicated the 6-27-85 rap about people falling off the balcony at SPAC. That first step is a real doozy. Especially pertinent would have been the part where Phil said do what you want to yourself but there are people below who would get hurt

yeah if yer wondering about continuity on the DVD--watch for how scofield's or molo's shirt is buttoned/unbuttoned.

I'd assume that they'll cut stuff from night one into night two to make it appear seamless.

thought night one didn't take off (shakedown aside) until cosmic charlie. that being said, some of the tunes played that night were the best I've witnessed, ever.

certainly mason's, never better!

and the audience 'horn blowing viking' (think giant conch shell) was ever present thursday night. more subdued friday....

An awesome show of the highest magnitude, no doubt!! Certainly in the top handful I've seen Phil play. The setlist was phenomenal (what a ridiculous 2nd set, and especially after what had just gone down with the dude who stage dived off the balcony) and the playing matched the perfection of the setlist. I really hope they retain most of last night's show for the DVD but, if not, I really hope Phil and the rest realize that this will need to be accompanied by a CD release of the entire show (hell, make it both the shows for the sake of completeness!). I really get the feeling this will happen, as they've done similar stuff with some of the other DVD releases (closing of Winterland, particularly).

I can't believe I just saw a show with Viola, New Speedway, Unbroken, Uncle John's, Eyes, Stephen, 11, Caution (fuckin' Big Brown baby!!!), Help->Slip->Franklin's (and that was a monster!), Other One and 2nd verse of Dark Star!!!! Topped off with a beautiful Box of Rain!! Unreal!!!

Man, and I can only say how much I enjoyed Greg Osby after not really thinking much of his playing (probably due to the limited time) the night before. Scofield and Campbell really dueled it out - this was some fantastic guitar work. I do love Barry Sless, and probably prefer him to Campbell, but I think the matchup of Scofield and Campbell worked really well!! Did I mention Big Brown!!!!

Oh, and finally (for now) the guy did dive off the balcony (though I guess we've pretty much established this). I was sitting far left in the front loge and all of sudden noticed in the corner of my eye a guy bolting down the steps and planting his foot on the rail behind the loge, at which point he vaulted himself over the balcony and (as someone else mentioned) seemed to catch his foot on the rail at the edge of the balcony. I was pretty out there at the moment and as I watched it was sort of like time freezing for a second. I didn't really look too closely to see what happened below (guess my reaction was to look away to avoid seeing something horrific).

Anyway, thank God that it appears that the people involved are alive (hopefully not terribly injured), particularly the folks on whom he landed. I hope the guy's OK as well, but for him I definitely don't have the same type of sympathy - clearly in need of some serious psychotherapeutic help. I do hope he's all right.

Can't wait for the DVD!!!!!!

Not a spontaneous one, anyway. Big Brown was already on stage from the beginning of the show. Had a blurry view of the setlist through my binocs from the left lower loge, and it looked a lot like that was what it said.

My friend and I wondered whether they'd change the set list as a result. He reminded me that we once saw one of P&F configurations with Kimock play Van Halen's "Jump"...

Mr. Arnoul,

To have that be your very first posting on the Zone seems even more pathetic than the bad imItation of Dickey and Duane that you mention. Jeez, I can understand your not being into this lineup having seen 30 years of this music (I'm right there myself), but to say the band was sloppy and that it was an imitation of Dickey and Duane (I'm sorry, but Jimmy and Warren seemed a whole lot more Dickey- and Duane-like to me, as much as I loved the PLQ) is ridiculous! The band was as good as could possibly be expected for a lineup that's played this much together (particularly Scofield and Osby), and what the hell else could you possibly want more than a Help->Slip->Franklin's after the previous songs in the 2nd set? Would a Terrapin have made you feel any better?

Seriously, if you think the shows were as lousy as you say, why buy the DVD? I'm sure Phil will be selling enough of these puppies w/o needing to sell the one you'll purchase. Maybe you'll be enjoying the RatDog set more tonight at Wavy's B-Day (Happy B-Day, Wavy, btw!). "If Phil has the guts to put it out?!!" That's funny!

Seriously, I know you can't really be feeling this way. And there are other games in town, if this one isn't still working for you. Maybe the whole jumper thing freaked you out, and that I can understand.

Phil - this show was amazing, and I hope you throw the whole 2nd set (and Viola, Cumberland and Unbroken) on the DVD. You more than made up for some recent less-than-overwhelming Bay Area shows IMO.

Long live Phil Lesh!!!

Whoaaaa, 1st posting. Warfield on the floor, beautiful space, dialed in sound, very trippy backdrop, joan looking straight at us all night, just the plushiest intergalatic Captain's cocktail lounge. I appreciate all the insights, flashes and bits of the puzzle, it really helps to flesh it out with evertbody's take.
Less psychedelic then what, I wonder? Are you kidding me! Though the wheelhouse felt searingly white hot at times with Sco and Campell just firing plamsa licks at each other. No time to float or even duck. just get on and go.

Both nights felt totally plugged in, with the 19th seamlessly flowing and clearly benifiting from being the second time they have ever played together.
My bias is all about the tactile feel of the group mind, the hook up, and it was fully loaded.

To Crypticalex: Actually, though I never dreamed I would ever say this, I wouldn't mind seeing Phil give Help-Slip-Franklin's a rest.

That said, you're right re Mr. Arnoul. I thought Thursday was a good show, and Friday one of the best I've seen, even if the band did have the temerity to play a couple of songs that I wouldn't have personally chosen.

Seems that to say this combination is not "psychedelic" enough doesn't mean anything more interesting than, "the guitarists don't sound enough like Jerry to me." And to say these guitarists sound like an "imatation" [sic] of Dickey and Duane -- I can't imagine where you even *get* that, beyond the fact that Campbell and Scofield try to interweave leads at certain points...

First set Thursday started slow but things kicked in second set and didn't let down till the last note of Box on Friday. Epic Epic stuff. Balls to the Wall Rock and Roll. Smoked. Thank You Phil!!!!

Saw both shows, and I thought set 1 Friday night was the best set. The Cumberland Blues exploded, thanks to John Scofield and Larry Cambell going back and forth, and I had several good flashbacks at this show. The second set would have been better I think if it weren't for the accident at the break. I was at Wharf Rat table in lobby when it happened, and saw staff running inside. Usually when they do that, they are after someone who snuck in through front door, but my friend Lynn from Rock Med knew it was something more serious, and she was right. Once set 1 started, you could tell this was a different band from the night before. One guy said last night they were good, tonight they were great! You all know what I'm talking about I'm sure. Scofield could be heard from the first note of this show, so that was cool. Killer Watchtower and New Speedway also. I thought it was cool the way they closed with Unbroken Chain, and it drives me nuts when Larry plays these notes way up on his guitar neck, killer! I waas hoping for and got Eyes, and Uncle Johns was a great opening choice after what happened at the break. Feedback was killer, and that is the first time I have got to see Phil play Big Brown with his band. In fact I live for feeback, and jamming! Thanks to Ruby and GDTS for the great seats, I had the time of my life! Get ready summer tour folks, you are in for the thrill of your lifes, love eddieboy!

Bruce,
Your Chico homie Floyd (Kyle's friend, the one you always see at the gym) here. Shit happened big time at these two shows, really amazing stuff. Sure hoping they add some west coast shows, as I'm going to be away during the tour and can't see any of the ones scheduled so far

"loosing it on acid dosen't make you belong in jail or getting beat up you guys are out there and have no Idea about what this is all about ."

You're right, losing it on acid doesn't in itself make you belong in jail. But recklessly injuring other people does require some sort of appropriate redress. What if he hadn't jumped, but instead got in his car after the show and drove into someone? Being on acid, or anything else that one knowingly takes, doesn't relieve you of responsibilty for yourself, whether you lose it or not. If one desires or anticipates completely losing one's shit, one should arrange in advance for a handler/guide to keep oneself from rolling in potholes in the street (yeah, that was me) or other stupider stuff. Reading about this whole jumper episode just freaks me out and frankly scares the shit out of me. And I wonder why he made his statement on some other board, if he's part of the zone and it was a Phil show, not a phantasy show at which the episode occured.

VERY highly respected, which makes this really surprising. Very out of character of him. He put up an apology thread here, which, of course, is getting flamed out of its mind:

This band has huge potential. They got 'there' many times Friday night. Right now, they're good at stretching (like a rubber band) and twisting the familiar. Speedway, for instance, was nicely twisted. They need to work a bit on the unchartered territory. Scofield and Campbell, I think, need to get more comfortable going to Jupiter. Osby is there. And, of course, the other three guys. But the guitar players, like I said, can twist the familiar, but it's the unfamiliar that they need to work on 'cause that's where the glory is. Amen.

It's funny to see all the bald guys lined up on one side of the stage and Phil and Campbell on the other. We renamed the band...Molo Makes Five.

I would like to put down for the record what I saw happen with the individual who "leaped" from the balcony on Friday Night at the Warfield. I was sitting in section 4, Row AA, of the lower loge of the balcony. During the break, after a fabulous first set, I was sitting on the arm of my chair, facing the upper balcony and talking to the great people who were sitting around me. I watched this individual, dressed in a yellow T shirt and with a shaved head, fast approach the back rail of the loge section, and moving fast, leap up on this rail, put his arms out like he could fly, and then proceeed to thrust himself from this rail, out over the 3 rows of the lower loge section, and out and over and down to the floor. His shin hit the front rail on the way down. I yelled at him "Dude, No", but it was too late to stop him. He flew by my within only a few feet. I looked down and saw the carnage, and urged the people around me not to look down, and to get out of there. People were crying and freaking out. It was one of the most disturbing things I had ever seen.

My thoughts on this individual. This was a premeditated leap of immense skill and strength. His precision in putting his feet on the back rail, putting his arms out like wings, and then flying like superman over the loge section and out onto the floor was not something that even a trained gymnast could achieve. My initial thought was he was commiting suicide, and in doing so, could easily have taken me, or my friends over the side with him. His act was one of complete selfishness and stupidity. People who commit suicide are selfish people. This leaper could have killed several people, people with mothers, fathers, friends and kids. There were many who were very angry people after this. From my seat, I could look directly down on him and his victim, and it was horrifying. He was writhing on the ground like Gollum, a gross and merciless animal. The wait for proper medical care was interminable, and in my opinion, as an EMT, a complete botch by the Warfield Medical Crew or whoever these amateurs were (both the leaper and the victim should have been put on Backboards) It was also unbelievable that the SFPD did not arrest this individual for assault. He should do time for this selfish act. The drugs he took are not an excuse. He knew what he was doing. In all liklihood, the victim will sue the Warfield. If there is such bad LSD and PCP out there, are not the venues aware of this potential and on the look out? Isn't it the obligation of the Warfield and the band to be on the look out for dangerous individuals out there? Isn't there a pattern developing of jumpers? My thoughts go out to the victim, and many prayers were said that night. Kudos to the band for pulling it together and playing a second and third set that wer incredible. Our safety inside the Warfield and other venues rests with others. Have not there been enough of these incidents? PS-I would be happy to act as a witness on the behalf of the Victim, so that this leaper gets what he deserves, a huge civil lawsuit to compensate the victim for his attempted "homicide dive".

This show was far superior to the 18th. It felt like it was all second set material as opposed to the previous night which felt all like first set material, even the stuff that wasn't was played like it was, but enough about the unsightly 18th. Sco seemed a little bit more conservative, which was alright by me, and Barracco finally started to get showcased more. It occurred to me in the middle of the show what was so strange about the band: no one plays lead. That's why the sound is even more ambient than usual. Phil's always played with at least one strong distinctive lead player that drives the music, not with this line up, It's the rhythm factory. They don't seem to even have a clear idea of many of the typical lead roles of the GD music. They just jam, a good example of this the Slipknot! where it sounded like Phil was playing the song by himself and Osby, Sco, and Larry just improvised. Really weird stuff. Anyhow Big Brown was my favorite part, really powerful, and that encore set was really well done by everyone the second verse of Darkstar was twice as good as the first from the 18th and I especially liked Larry's steel work on Box of Rain.

The 'leaper' posted an apology on the Phish Phantasy Board. He said it was not pre-meditated and that it was simpy a burst of engery. Uh....As sickening as his post is, the ones that follow are even more degenerate. Posts to the effect of..."it's ok, dude. It happens to the best of us. Glad you're ok." Amazing. A bunch of people on that board supporting his actions in a weird, sick way.

I gotta say, it was quite disturbing. He fell about 25 feet from where we were standing and the commotion following, the panic that swept through there, it was palpable. Like death had shown up all of a sudden or some very evil force. Just awful. I have a friend who happened to be in White Bird under the Warfield tending to his girlfriend when they wheeled the jackass in. He was yelling all sorts of crazy, drug induced BS and, at one point, bolted from the wheel chair and tried to escape. A real class act. And, now, you read his apology and some of his follow ups and it's almost like a shrug, 'gee, sorry. glad no one was killed. I really f-ed up.' And he gets all sorts of pats on the back.

Great first set and seriously altered second set/encore.

...just back from a sweet weekend in SF....

LOVED what was going on musically all night. absolutely top notch playing, with intent and purpose, the entire evening. super-fine. the Warfield had an amazingly positive vibe in it, strong enough to overcome the severe intensity of the tragedy at setbreak. ...during the New Speedway refrain at the end of the first set the ENTIRE audience was singing together "one way or another, this darkness GOT TO GIVE!" just one shining moment in a transitive nightfall of diamonds....

thank you Phil and the rest of the band, everyone who was in the Warfield and everyone who was sending their energies that direction. the love is real...

Absolutely!

Call me cold and callous, but as long as that
balcony jumper's actions were premeditated, then
I agree 100% with junruh. In the very least, for
a significant period of time longer than the
period of time needed for that woman to recover
from her injuries.

I also happened to experience a similar episode
of sheer stupidity at the Garcia Band show at
the Spectrum in Philly on 11/12/1991. My seat
happened to be one section from the stage, right
hand side, and just underneath the scaffolding
where the upper deck started.

Anyway, these two morons -- and there is no way
to call these people anything but morons --
were shouting to a girl to the upper deck, then
motioned for her to come down. Yup! She took the
plunge and landed in the seat one row directly
in front of me!
I was amazed she was not
critically injured, but she and those two morons
were rightfully removed from the Spectrum! Again,
an episode that reeked of sheer stupidity!

On another note, during the second set and most
of the first set, I had a group of bozos who never
listened to the show and carried on a drunken-bozo
conversation...

...until I lost my patience and turned to them
and said,

"Excuse me! I drove over six hours [from Rochester, NY]
to be here tonight and listen to the music
from the stage. Not you! And I've heard you
far more than Jerry the entire night! So, I'm
asking you once and only once: SHUT THE FLYING FUCK UP!!"

I had no more problems that show, but the fact
that I had to be less than friendly about it
-- and with no remorse -- made for a rather
less-than-memorable experience that night.

Oh yes...I forgot to mention that I politely
tried to hint to those bozos to be quiet.
Tried a simple "ssh", tried cupping my ears to
listen (and block out the chatter), and hinted
numerous times. However, when folks are that
ignorant, then it was time to give them the
clue!

I can't wait to hear the second set on tape. I feel like I missed a bunch of it from internal and external distractions. LOVED the first set though; right out of the chute with passenger (which I was never a fan of at GD shows) viola lee and cumberland. Just solid clean loud chunky fluid music. My last Phil show was NYE which didn't sit so well with me, but this was different. Scofield and Campbell playing off each other across the stage, Molo driving and Phil gelling it...just great stuff.

Then came intermission with the jumper. Maybe it overly affected me since airboy physically brushed me as he took out the woman next to me, but I never really got over it. The whole vibe seemed to change. It was weird. Reading reviews, I think most folks ultimately put the event behind them and got on with the show. I just couldn’t switch gears from "fuck, I hope she's not dead" to "isn't this joyful music" that quickly. Also, as per John's comments above, there seemed to be a lot of crowd distractions. It seemed that the longer the night went on, the less aware people were of other’s space. But I don’t mean to whine. All in all a great show and I’m so glad I was able to catch it.
Looking forward to reuniting with old friends at some summer shows.

First hunt of jumper was shouting starting immediately next to me as I huddled on the floor....shouting immediately followed by THUMP!!!!!

Jumper landed about 2 feet from me, fell onto two people in my extended group. They took the young girl to the hospital, I think, but word was she was OK. The guy who got landed on made it through the show, had some bruises.

Bummed us right out for a while, for sure....

Oh, and I gotta laugh at the folks that used the jumper to get better seats: "look, some prime floor spots just opened up!"

Official Setlist:

First set.

Second set:

THUMP > UJB

Show review?

First night good.
Second night better.
I'm not really good at objectivity, I always like the shows.

Lights for filming made it a little different, first show with lights shining in my face the whole show...got used to it after a while.

Band? Animated.

Joan? two thumbs (at least) up.

Sco-Larry? very fluid. Sco very animated.
Osby? Nice, unimportant.
Rob? Happy.

Phil? Head Prankster.
Molo? The Man.

Last words?

Love everybody at the warfield, except the jumper.

THUMP!

AWESOME show! i'll leave the critical review to others, but i think joan and the warfield staff were critical to the success of this night and deserve extra special thanks and praises: joan for pulling the band through the deep and beautiful second set; the warfield staff for remaining professional and courteous while dealing with some pretty unprofessional fans. the base jumper wasn't the only damned fool that night, there were plenty of others, and the staff dealt with it really well. thanks guys -- it's you that make the warfield one of the best venues in the country.

Same as above for me too. The extra fifty

The 1st set Viola>Cumberland was the peak.

Towards the end I needed to hug my rib-cage

I turned 40 at this show, and aside from the jumper incident, this was one helluva night. Great snacks on line in the rain, courtesy of my lovely wife. Great to meet you Greg, thanks for the chair for this old man to sit in.

Phil basically dedicated every show he does from here on out to Ramrod. They came out thumping with the Passenger, and the Viola Lee > Cumberland was like a Fasten your Seat belts sign going on. This was going to be a real doozy, and it was. An EPIC show musically, as many others have testified to. Peggy-O is always sweet with Joan, and trading verses. Sco & Campbell dueling it out during the scorching Watchtower, and a passionate New Speedway, with frequent repeating of the "One way or another" lines. Unbroken Chain was conservative, but solid.

I was having one of the evenings that will forever be remembered for all the right reasons - amazing friends - thank you Pete, Dawne, Kerstin, Darren, for the zany fun and birthday gifts. Enter the buzz killer, to suck the life out of 3,000 people. Enough has been said, but my .02 is what an incredible testiment to this community that the audience (including my posse) and the band, crew, etc... overcame this disturbing disruption, and took back the evening with the Spirit and joy that made this community in the first place. It was not the drugs folks... The crowd seemed to lift each other up and so many folks were consciously trying to set this aside and the Band came out and absolutely delivered the goods.

During the almost 80 minute painstakingly long break, I turned to my wife & friends and said - we need an Uncle John's Band. So it goes. The Eyes and the St. Stephen that followed seemed to instantly revive the Warf, back to where we should be. Phil busted out "Big Brown" and had a Big Brown sandwhich with his rack and had that crazed mad scientist look that we know and love. The feedback was felt not just from head to toe, but THROUGH head to toe! Frankin's Tower seemed to have new found meaning as these Hunter songs so often do. If you get confused, listen to the music play!

Thanks Phil for the Mini 3rd set. We needed it. Thanks for a great birthday party! Thank you to all of you in that place Friday night who worked through the horrible interruption and smiled and hugged someone and danced and made the effort to lift one another up. Let's do it again!

That photo is not from Saturday, but it is him, I believe. Someone did a little photoshopping apparently.

Regarding the people on Phantasy Tour, I don't think most people are condoning it necessarily. The jumper is a longtime regular on the Phish board over there and is consistently thoughtful, funny and cool in his posts. The fact that his dad has a long history with the GD adds to this. Any posts that stop short of flaming him are simply a result of the goodwill he's built up over the years. FWIW.

Sounds like it was a great weekend and it's a bummer this happened.

Yeah I noticed scofield throwing in quite a few references...it would nice to compile them some how.

Zang,
A couple more: just before Help there is a (Theme from) Carwash clap thing, I'm assuming done by Molo. Might even be a sample. We all took note of that one where we were. Also, towards the end of Eyes there are a couple of Blue Sky references, in addition to several other Allmansesque parts scattered throughout the set

Recording? Is there some kind of recording of these shows floating around?

Did I say recording? Must have been wishful thinking. Carry on...

Both shows were sick. That jumper almost killed it, but luckily everyone was so pumped and the band so tight and amazing that we pulled it off. Can't wait for the dvd!

Friday Show :

Right from the Start, Passenger to Viola to Cumberland. That was it. This new line up is the shit. The way Campbell and Scofield played each off each other and Phil in the middle was sick, of course in a great Dead Jamb way. Then Joan gets involved in Peggy O, more guitar sickness in Watchtower, and an awesome "New Speedway Boogie" - I believe Joan mentioned in her interview she loves that song, and so did everyone at the Warfield "This Darkness got to give" - How much fun was that !!!! Then Phil does his classic "unbroken chain" - classic way to end the first set. Fun - Fun - Fun. now to the not so fun set break. I saw the jumper half way as he ran down the balcony, and did a superman fly over the balcony. Fu**ed up stuff. What an idiot! and putting other people in harms way! Anyhow, after long set break, Phil gets everyones mind off of it, the best he could.
Come on, doesn't get better that the Dead Classics he did here. Uncle Johns is such a positive fun song, and into eyes! Osby on Sax, was a great compliment to this line up. Forgot about Molo and Boracco>> they were having a blast. Molo was jumping out of his seat and lashing out at Phil at some points. What energy there was between them. Eyes, was groovin, then it was like what else could they do on that level, and St. Stephen shows up. This show was the shit. Eleven > Caution on big brown. Phil and his band did it up. Ok now what, yes the classic show opener or closer > whatever: Help SLip Frank: Yes he's done it a lot, and this has been classic remake for years now, it has to be on the DVD. We are all blown away at this point. Then Phil say's i'll be back for more fun and games! Go get another drink, and while waiting in line and talking, you can hear Phils bass open the third set with the "Other One" I wish i was inside, but it was neat to feel how Phil's bass shakes the entire building with the other one - bombs! Dark Star put us into space, and back into other one, where of course i'm back in my seat now, and then hear Phil noodling around, and i was always good at hearing foreshadowing of what they might do next. And i know i heard or felt a "Box" coming. I said it during the jamb, and low and behold, Phil does Box. How could he not do that, Box was always a great set closer, encore, opener whatever. Love when Phil does Box:

There you have it: This band rocks, the guitarists are awesome. Scofield is having a blast and he is animated. Joan is hot, Molo is a monster, Boracco - low key but right there the whole time, Campbell - where'd he come from? and Phil is and always has been the "Leader of this Band!"

Bottom line = This show was awesome! Cant wait to see it or hear it again on the DVD!

This summer tour should be great, go check it out!

Cush

sick opening salvo to be sure...right out of the gates, phil left no doubt that what was to follow would be epic.

Well I guess it's time to throw my three cents in.
Thursday was real good fun. Scofield was blown away by US. Yes I do believe WE have a big part in all of this. GREAT Mason's Children. Never heard it better.
Friday? Tuned in, Turned on and Crankin with so much confidence it simply bowled me over.
Again WE simply pushed the envelope. We are the canvas. The canvas receives, allows. And boy did they paint a masterpiece on us. Yea a couple odd things happenned. But then We were there for them, no hesitation on their part. "Let's do this" was the motto of the night.

Thanks to every solid soul/mind there. Keep going, keep picking up those diamonds for your bag. You deserve them all.

Thanks to the skilled musicians that know where to take us. Light in Light out without prejudice nor doubt.

Thanks Phillip we know it can't be easy for you.

Thank You to all we could not see but were most obviously there. Faith...and further...

rant>>>part II

Is PHIL "El Capitain"????, well allow the captain to steer his OWN ship. we are mere swabs, on this vessel>>>and should treat every voyage as our last. it is my distinct pleasure to be at the Captain's disposal. i am a true fan, no matter what. and ATTENDING APPEARANCES like the 12 G's Midnight Stealth show, gives one some "sea-legs".
i enjoyed sco, i enjoyed scoville, and i have really enjoyed Joan. perhaps i am just a red-blooded american male? yet, being in the "Joan-Zone" ROCKS!

THIS IS ROCK & ROLL RADIO...............

Balcony diving is not a crime, at least in SF. A police report was never even filed, according to the SF DA's office and the Police department.

Anybody comment on the BASS BOMBS Phil was throwing out, left my pants legs flapping. Awesome.

I just love Joan, of course I did even before P&Joan, oops Phil and Freinds. I just hope she stays on a while.

Vocals (except Joan) tain't a strong point, but the music makes up for it. Sco and Campbell were locked in on occaision, and Sco even just stopped playing a time or two to watch Phil and Larry go at it.

Good show.
