thanks.. beating myself up over here in kc for not doing the 9 hour drive
love ya phil.. cant wait to hear the tapes!
just home from show...wow.great first set,loud !!
second set kind of lost a bit to me. phil talking into the mic for monitors only to lead band alot.only thing i didn't dig was that scofield seemed to be palying leads over everything and seemed to be "stepping on" some very cool solos when other guitarist was playing his solos, lots of trading fours, almost to much for me. headband and joan were wonderfull. all the vocals were great.overall a pretty good night of music as always, just a bit loud, but the ryman is a weird room to mix.glad i went, lots of room to roam and strech out.great venue. thanks phil !!
this setlist sounds so good...am I extremely jealous of y'all down in Nashville town? YES!
Just a few notes to add to the comments above - The songs were great. Not quite as "jammy" a show as Bonnaroo (Viola Lee Blues notwithstanding). Sco needs to learn when to stop playing (I think someone mentioned this).
Pride of Cucamonga was my personal fav. from first set.
1st set was too loud for the room, IMHO... Ryman is very small (not even 50 yards from the back of the church to the front of the stage), and is acoustically "bouncy." Hard venue to play loud rock'n'roll in.
2nd set sound quality was much better. Suprised they did GDTRFB again, but it was still great.
Loved all of Joan's songs, though this doesn't seem to be a (*ahem*) universal opinion. I'd never heard Peaceful Valley before - really dug that.
What is Peaceful Valley?
Peaceful Valley=Ryan Adams Song
It's From Jacksonville City Nights:
Peaceful Valley:
Lord take me home
To the peaceful valley
Down the winding river
To your city your soul
I've grown so tired
And my hearts grown heavy
To walk any longer
To your cities of gold
All my life I've loved for forgiveness
But I can never seem to get enough
All my life I've been rocked into the darkness
With a gun to my head
Trying to find a peaceful song
Trying to find a peaceful song
To sing when everything goes wrong
Till the peaceful valley calls me home
Up there in the clouds
In that glorious kingdom
Tell me there ain't nothing but an easy recline
Can I still smoke my cigarettes and have my coffee
Up there in heaven with a bottle of wine
Cause all my life, I've longed for forgiveness
But I can never seem to get enough
All my life I've been rushed into the darkness
With a gun to my head
Trying to find a peaceful song
Trying to find a peaceful song
To sing when everything goes wrong
Till the peaceful valley calls me home
Oh take me home to the peaceful valley
Down the winding river
To your city or soul

Sorry for the double post. The board is tempermental this morning.
Looks great. Not to worry, Sco will be a great addition to this band!
Which songs did Joan sing lead on?
Thanks!
What was Scofields volume in the mix ?High?Low?
the show kicked ass. excellent. scofield was awesome, he wasn't steppin' on any toes just gettin' his groove on like a mother....er. Attics was unreal. Joan sounded so good. One of my best Phil shows.
looking forward to Camden. Wish I could do the whole tour again as this looks like it will be another great one. Scofield is another nice addition, for sure. I will miss Barry's sweet pedal steel, though.
Thanks for the updates, everyone.
thanx awreetus !!
I gots to know the really important stuff too-
is headband singing any leads, and is he wearin' a headband??
did molo wear a hat - what color?
don't ya luv it when joan singz the bluez !
Was there any fiddle/steel last night?
oh great. another ra song.
Y'know, I don't mind the RA songs as long as Joan is singing them.I loved her Magnolia Mountain from Vegoose last year. Not crazy about RA singing his own songs though. Go figure.
I'm with ya Dance. Joan is pretty much the only person I want to hear taking on the Garcia/Hunter ballads these days. Warren on Stella Blue makes me wince and cringe, Joan makes me weep and sigh.
I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but Mickey Raphael (from Willie Nelson's band) played harmonica for about half of the show.
anyone pick up the "Instant Live" CD? If so, how is it? Can you hear Scofield???
elaborate to the fullest.
thanx awreetus !!

Singing, yes 3 or 4, really well too. No headband.
did molo wear a hat - what color?
1st set, no. 2nd set yes, green I think
don't ya luv it when joan singz the bluez !
The best I ever heard her.
Was there any fiddle/steel last night?
Lots of fiddle and steel, mando on FOTD
Mickey Raphael was awesome.
sounds good...looking forward to pompano manana...Maybe i'll get a nice scarlet>fire or a darkstar w. scofield.
cant wait for buffalo, darien lake, hopefully trey will join phil and friends and it will be a meltdown!!!.who is doing the front of house mix!!!???anyone know!!
I just heard the Instant Live 3 CD set from this show from a friend that I picked up at the airport, All I can say is HOLY SHIIT!
Larry Campbell was all over the fiddle and pedal steel in this hallowed hall of country music. From the haunting into of Sitting on Top of the World where Larry beckoned the ghosts of all of the coutry music immortals who have played on that holy stage - to the wailing pedal steel of Dire Wolf, Larry was all over the place last night. Joan was also sensational as her sultry vocals took Sugaree to new heights. Rob Barraco sang Dire Wolf and some others as I only heard the first two disks. Mickey Rafael from Willie Nelson's band blew some tasty harmonica on several cuts too. John Scofield is in the mix, however, he doesn't come close to Campbell's muscular playing The mix of the Instant Live recording was very good...I was pleasantly surprised how well this show turned out and I guess I'll be going that route for much of this tour.
Oh yeah..Larry sang a fantastic Deep Elum Blues. His incredible fiddle, mandolin, and pedal steel makes you forget those guys from RRE. Those cats are definatley not in the same league as this guy and this show proves that. Some asked if Sco was in the mix..he is..but his playing has never...ever....cut through in this music. The harmonies were also sensational. I just wish I was there.
were there any tapers ?
Yes, there were tapers.
Hey Folks, I just got back last night from TN.Show was terriffic worth the trip on all counts,Ryman is indeed a hallowed hall.Get to a show as soon as you are able.
Here are a few pics from where I was...
Just got my bearings back from this show...
My first time at the Rhyman... WOW... it is phenomenal. The sound was awesome..... loud, but awesome. Predictably, a very "country" vibe in the setlist.. but with teeth. I won't go into specifics of the show, but let me just say it was a blast. Sco seemed to be feeling his way at times, and stepping on toes at others....reading the monitors a lot. Some timing issues. But none of this took away from the show for me. I really thing this lineup could be HUGE in time. I am planning my KC trip as we speek.
For those of you who were there, or have recordings, I am James Wright.. .the one Phil signed the liscense for onstage... I just wanted to share that to tell you how that went down.. pretty cool.
My Dad died of Lou Gehrig's disease a little over 3 weeks ago. I was very close to my father. He turned me onto a lot of great traditional music. It was quick (5 months). Amidst the grief and pain of the last few weeks, I had kinda lost touch with the scene.. actually, I had lost touch with the world. But my Dad was unable to donate any organs due to the disease. Basically, they were rindered useless. My friend got the tickets for this show last week. My wife and I were supposed to make the trek from St. Louis and meet them in Nashville. My wife injured her back and got a Cortazone shot on her PSSI Joint the morning we were supposed to go. Being the loving wife she is, she said "go and take Greg with you. But make sure that if you see Phil, have him sign your liscense as an Organ Donor" So we head to Nashville. Somewhere during the second set, I was coming back from the restroom to my seat in the balcony. I literally run smack into Jill Lesh. So I said "Excuse me Mrs. Lesh." and she actually stopped. I said "I promised my wife that if I met Phil tonight, I'd ask him to sign my organ donor card. Is there anyway you would sign it for me?" I went on to tell her about my Dad and how it was something he never talked about anyway... She covered her mouth and said "Come with me." She took me downstairs and around the back of the auditorium. She took me backstage and asked for my liscense. I stood there to the right of the stage. She said "I'll tell Phil about your Dad and have him sign it between the end of the set and the encore... meet me back outside that door before the donor speech." So I did... well I guess they didn't leave the stage...but my friend did see Jill talking to him in the huddle. She must have told him then. So then, as some of you saw, he signed it onstage and they played "attics." She came back out and brought it to me just before the first note started. When I heard "in the attics of my life..." I started to cry. I don't know if it was directly because she told him anything about my Dad... who knows... but it felt that way to me.
This is why Phil and this scene (when it's good) is so much more special than anything else.
Thanks for listening.
And Phil... thanks for an unforgetable evening. It meant more than you will know.
Just curious.. can you hear that on the "instant live" recordings?
very nice phil wright !
thats amazing stuff, philright...thanks for sharing that
Great Pictures DB, I love Phil's shirt
And a very touching story PW, as usual, phil delivered
WOW! I saw that duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! (philwright)
Never had SUCH a good time!
I thought Scofield sounded AWESOME!
Larry is a MONSTER NOW and dayumn that MOLO is just a freakin MACHINE!
I dug it all...Joan could've sang a little LESS...but its ALL good!
Cant post all my thoughts here - goin stealth here @ work!
LAWD I had a damn blast though!
Death dont have no Mercy, Deep Elum, Pride of KOOOOOK, GDTRFB & Attics were MY fav's!
Met up with Cosmic Charlie, Rev Buddy Green & Rob right beofre the show....wish we would've had more time to hang out & meet more zoners!
(((( Phils Cowboy Shirt ))))
Wow! That's some story PW. I'm choked up from reading it. My condolences to you and your family.
Here's my .02: Great show, great venue. The band rocked, and the performance was a strong one. I was blessed with seats in row G, about 15 from the stage. The mix from where I was was excellent. I was generally able to pick out whichever intrument I wanted to hear without much effort, especially when that person was soloing. There was a little snap, crackle, and pop from one of Larry's speakers, but it was intermittent and eventually disapeared.
Did I mention that the band rocked? Did they ever. I loved Scofield, I didn't think he was overplaying or stepping on anybody's toes. He was very animated and really seemed into the music. He and Larry were constantly making eye contact, smiling at each other and playing off what the other was doing. Phil looked and sounded great, too.
It wasn't the trippiest Phil show, but there was plenty of jamming in both sets. If you are into "the good ol' Grateful Dead" material, this show was for you. It had a late 69/ early 1970 vibe to the setlist. The first set "Deep Ellum" with Mickey Raphael was a highlight of the show for me, a great version. Mickey's playing was first rate, tasteful and interesting but not overdone.
The second set was high energy all the way. I was pleased to get my first Phil "Althea," and my first "1/2 Step" in 6 years. The "Peaceful Valley" song was nice, sort of a country/gospel ballad. It worked for me. They followed with a jam that led into "Viola," the song I was hoping for the most that night. Thanks, Phil! I knew I heard "Day Tripper" somewhere in there, I think it was Scofield doing it. The "Tequila" jam was real raunchy, and the really hammered the riff hard. I had one of "those" moments at the peak of it, worth leaving home for. The jam between the second and third verse was longer and covered a lot of ground, from spranglity klink/post drums space to jazz, rock, and a nice blues interlude. Getting "Death Don't..." made the night for me,as if I wasn't satisfied already by that point. It was a moving version, with strong solos by Sco, Larry, and Rob B. There wasn't really a down moment in the second set, even during the slower moments.
They didnt really even leave the stage after "GDTRFB", they just moved behind the speakers, next to the drums. There was a big huddle, and Phil said something to them. It was cool seeing Phil sign the guy's donor card, even more so after reading the story behind it. The "Attics" encore was flawless, and the harmonies were spot on.
Lary campbell is an amazing musician, I am sold. His work on fiddle, mandolin, and electric guitar was consistently inventive. He is a good pick up. Rob B. and Molo were there usual ass kickin' selves. This band has a lot of potential. This is a hot band, I can't wait for the midwest run. Go Phil!!
cool shit- Mags
I'm stoked he came to your neck of the woods for ya
peace
ps~ Larry is a Beast
MVPhriend
05 and now 06 as well....IMHO
looks like an awesome show.
mickey raphael sitting in, wow, nice addition.
Folks,
Don't know where to start..sat front row right in front of Larry who was simply terrific. The entire night was pure joy. I watched Phil Lesh lead a terrific group of musicians into a 3 hour experience.
This is not about Phil vs. Bobby, I usually allow the young crowd to have those rediculous battles, but rather refreshing to see a member of my favorite band simply play for the love of the music, his fans, the experience....I came into the night, not a huge Joan fan, but she was awesome...the entire night was special.
Want to thank the folks around us up front...Kit kats for all...Security was also very cool.
I don't want to rant and did love the Dog last year in Terra Alta, but Tuesday night was the best show and experience I have had since Jerry left....
Good travels to those out with the Dog and Phil...Keep the spirit alive..
Wow, great story Phil Wright. I was wondering where that donor card came from during the show.
Nothing much to add here. It was a terrific show! I've got 3rd row seats for the Louisville show in late July, but I don't know if I can wait that long. This is a hot friggin band!
>>>>>Just curious.. can you hear that on the "instant live" recordings?
Yes you can, and this yet another reason I love this man. Thanks for your story and all the best to you and your wife.
I bought the download and listened to it this morning at work with headphones. Damn fine show. Love the country theme. Looking forward to buying more downloads and hearing what these guys deliver.
This is the best PH&F show ever, from the beggining of the Ph&P shows. I saw them in Phily and they rocked, some nights better than others, and I saw both shows at the Warfield, and then I saw Ryman. No doubt, this is a killer band, and despite what people say about Warren or Joan, I love them both. Joan just smooths this band out and smolders and smokes on the ballads and blues. I would like to see her as a permanent addition, but that tends not to be the way with Ph&F. Oh well, this had to be the very best ever. Can't wait for Columbus, Indy, Chi-town and Lousiville.
My traveling companion, from NOrleans, headed off to see the Atlanta show, he'll bring back tapes and board discs. Can't wait, he's off to see them in NJ next, and I'm off to work for a while but will see the 4 above mentioned midwest shows.
If I can get just one more night like Ryman, I could call it a summer, I won't but I could.
Next stop mid-west tour, and then off to GOTV to see how Bobby stands up. Bobby has been on top of his game lately too.
So for all you breath holders on a re-union, who cares, we have two of the best since the Dead went into the middle years from mid 80-95. Both band usually play better than a band playing around a very frail and ailing Jerry.
They seem happy to be there once again.
God bless them,
loon
