Given the extaordinary rainfall of the past few days, I called ahead this afternoon to the Tweeter at the Waterfront (Camden, NJ), they assure me the show will go on rain or shine. Now I just hope the road to the venue does not get flooded and crumble into the earth...
Looks like the weather shouldn't be a problem, they're calling for mid 80's and a clear sky. It should be a beautiful night once the sun goes down and the humidity drops.
rain in the summer
what a drag !
Last I checked (http://www.phillyroads.com/roads/I-95_DE/) there were still some flooded roads near the venue, but keep in mind, the Delaware is a tidal river so they're used to frequent flooding.
Also, I called the River Link Ferry office today and they told me that they're running their normal schedule with no disruptions, so, good news there.
The flood peak was supposed to occur at 4:00 pm today so hopefully there won't be any problems tomorrow. Good to know about the ferry, I was wondering.
Got dark skies in Newark DE right now (8:35 pm) but looks lke it should pass.

Can someone please tell me what the "norm" for show times are? I am going to the PNC Arts Center on Saturday and have some other obligations to do during the day. What time will Mike wnd the Duo come on? What about Phil?
Thanks,
Evan
i've seen phil dozens of times, eastcoast stuff...and i've seen ratdog and really liked the inclusion of sax, though didn't really appreciate it until earlier this year.
i saw marsalis at nassau mausoleum years ago but just can't get into horns with deadsounds, of course there are exceptions - am i alone in feeling this way?....has phil ever played with horns before?
sless has the chops and needs to be turned up...and lay off the pedal steel for the entire show - make it special, a treat.
whaddya thinka'dat?
thanx for the info on the ferry - i will be traveling that way. What's up w/ Trey and Mike I hope they will rock the f-ing place and sit in w/ Phil
Peace
Scotty
Evan,
Duo is on at 4:30, Phil at 6:00 and GRAB at 9:15....guessing 1 set of duo, 2 for phil and 1 longer set from GRAB...See ya there, Keep Groovin!!
i posted pretty much the same comment 4 months ago after opening night at the beacon....dear phil, you wanna play ryan adams tunes - get'em out on the effin' stage.
i know, i know - i'm tryin to keep the negativism to a minimum but the last phil show i saw was the worst phil show i ever saw - so i need to make sure this doesn't continue.
i tried - really i did. after that show (was it 4 ra tunes that night?) i went home and downloaded 80 minutes worth of RA and have listened to it maybe twice. i trust phil to point me in the right direction but i don't get this guy...never mind "who is he", how about "where is he". phil - grab this guy and bring him, by hook or by crook, out east and present him properly to the people that love what you do - its wierd that he's an absent influence...you can't tell me phil doesn't have the juice to make it happen - you would think ra would put a little more effort into thanking phil for greatly expanding his fanbase - i probably never would have bothered with this guy if it wasn't for phils interest in him - show me what i'm missing.
last point - i am an idiot - but one who still looks forward to those eight hour mini vacations afforded me when lesh rolls into town.
go ahead - rip me up.

Tweeter Center At The Waterfront
Camden, NJ
Doors at 4:30PM, Show at 6:00PM
The Duo will perform at 6PM, Trey at 6:30PM and Phil at 9:30PM
which times are correct?? I saw this on another board....anyone know?
After a day off this band will be loaded tonight. Osby has played w Phil/Dead several times in the Philly area, and it gets better each time. I expect another great show under clear blue skies, followed by a psychedelic sunset.
It is clear skies, bright sunshine and almost 80 degrees here in Philly right now.
Bringing the kids, who saw the 2-17 Hammerstein, and begged to go to this show, lol.
Relax, keep your tabulas rasa, lol, and it will be timeless....
i'm not digging the ra tunes, or ra himself either. if joan is up there, why not let her sing an original of hers, rather than ra tunes. pensacola is a good joan tune. also, LET TREY PLAY. love ya Phil, you still rock. i think Bob Marley said it best, "you can't please all the people all the time". God Bless.
SAVE THE STAGGER!!
All the "official" sites say that the music starts at 6:00 with the duo. Seems late to me but that's what they say.
Justpete/Clifftonhanger- I think Phil can best address your Ryan Adams perplexity: "He’s an immensely talented artist, and his every move is improvisation. Every one of his songs speak to me in a very deep and fundamental way. It’s not a question of Dead style. I’m more interested in playing in his style. I’ll jump on any opportunity to play with him."
It's not too hard to see why Phil would enjoy both playing with him and performing his tunes. Consider Garcia's licorice analogy about the Dead's music, I think it rings true here: "Not everyone likes licorice. But people who like licorice REALLY like licorice".

Thanks for the posts everyone. I reconstructed it from your comments and I think this is what it should look like. Updates and corrections are welcome. Haven't heard of "Bartering Lines" before. Another Ryan Adams tune? Did Larry play any fiddle tonight? Did Phil bust out Big Brown? How did Osby sound on Birdsong? Was it a packed house?

Just got back. WOW. What a set. Anyway, some comments. Desire and Bartering Lines were both the Ryan Adams songs. Not U2's desire. Bartering Lines is Ryan Adams as well, Joan vocals on both.
Before I go further, lemme just say, it was my first phil show, and i may not be totally correct on everything. Don't remember seeing Larry on fiddle at all. Place was pretty packed, empty seats here and there in the pavillion, but the lawn was full, but still pretty comfortable to give everyone plenty of dancing space. we were front row center of the lawn.
The eleven wasn't quite an hour. I'd say at least 30-40 minutes though. It was insane.
I thought bird song sounded great.
Trey was great. At times it felt like he was starting to 'take over' as he often does, but, he for the most part sat back, and played with phil and friends rather than just played on his own. So glad that he sat in on the second set.
Cool Jeff, great feedback. So you only got a 30-40 minute Eleven, pity;-) Sounds like phun! Pop a cold one, kick your feet up, burn one down, get a good night's rest y'all. Safe passage to those travelling north tomorrow.
i was kinda hoping phil wouldn't do rosemary again.. save it for warfield 04
He did it a few times last winter..
Desire is a great Ryan Song.
1) went in say 7:40 pm , couldn't stand the noise trey and mike were making-LEFT-
2) came back in at 10 pm with same ticket( guard was nice)
3)Phil ROCKED--great 2 sets--(mike gorden watched watchtower from PIT 100)
4) trey much better with the PHRIENDS- otherwise his set SUCKED
5) headband(no headband) smoked all night and i thought osby was a great addition
I liked the Trey/Mike set. There were a lot of people in the pavilion who were dancing hard through out. I saw Trey open for Tom Petty at MSG with a completely differnt band last week and enjoyed this 4 piece ensemble much more. This band definitely has a harder edge
Bird song had some nice space.
Watchtower is a throwaway but there was some good interaction between Trey and Osby.
Set 2 - Approx start 11:30
The Terrapin must have been 20m+ with a fast paced jam into the, "Since the end...," section which galloped into Inspriation portion.
Solid show all around. This is my favorite combination of the group (even without the special guest). They seem to listen more to each other and step aside when the other is soloing than the Herring/Haynes combo where everyone was whaling at the same time. Lots of great interaction between the band members - smiles all around. Walked out of venue before encore at 1:15!!
The "Jam" after Rosemary went back into The Eleven.
second set oprned with jam -> NEW POTATO CABOOSE
right ?
A few brief thoughts on the Camden show (as I'm off to work for a few hours):
- GRAB: Not really my cup of tea. I'd say that enjoyed it 30% of the time. While I'm not too familiar with that music, it did seem like they were repeating a lot of the same tunes from the Raleigh show (in the same order too).
- Phil Lesh And Friends: Wow. Stunning, really! I was totally enmeshed in the sonic tapestry Lesh and Co. wove throughout the night. This is life-fullfilling music, folks. Do not pass it by!
FIRST SET - sure there were only 5 tunes. . .stretched out to fit in a full hour's set! The jamming was fantastic. Molo was a force of nature. You'll all recall how the Quintet could turn on a dime and explode with gale-force intensity? This band does that too, but is a larger ensemble! Phil has players with huge ears up there. . .and seemingly no leash tethering them to reality whatsoever, so they just go and go and GO! It was great to have Molo up there again. As much as I enjoyed Sipe's work with this band in February, the addition of Molo allowed for the music to go into new realms of powerful bliss. The WATCHTOWER was fun; Joan really nailed the lyrics and the whole band powered through this old warhorse. Larry ripped an incredible solo here - really, really incredible! Trey was a solid guest at this point and I was glad that the "cutting contest" was kept to a minimum here. Osby was brilliant throughout the first set and Sless (on pedal steel exclusively) was just fine - exactly what the maestro ordered, in fact.
SECOND SET - I've gotta run, but this was really something wonderful. I'll post more later, but Phil sang TERRAPIN as if his life depended on it (and in fact, it may). . . . The ROSEMARY "SUITE" was gorgeous. With the massive TERRAPIN and then this beautiful "suite", it seems that Phil has captured the essence of the famed Eagle Mall concept which Hunter and Garcia were after (originally) w/AOXOMOXOA. Vital, original and totally brilliant.
Liked GRAB much more then I expected to. I can see why some folks say it isn't their cup of tea but I loved it, Trey has big ears. Lots of folks seemed to be digging it. Drifting (?) was exceptional.
First set was solid, more jamming early on then I expected. It never really went over the top until Trey came out for Watchtower which was done slow Hendrix style, very impresive interplay with Trey and Osby on that. Good set, short at one hour, poosibly a few minutes short of an hour.
Second set was a monster. The Terrapin->Stephen->11 clocked in at an hour, Trey was incedible on Terrapin and especially Stephen, shredded it. The 11 never got going like it could have, Trey seemed to deliberatly keep it mellow in a face off with Phil, lots of nice counterpunctual stuff but not manic. The Rosemary sandwich seemed to lose some of the crowd around us (24th row dead center), lots of folks chatting and then the new song Desire added to the lack of focus. It was well played but the combo of mellow Rosmary into a new mellow song did slow things down a bit. They refocused by the time they got to Fire and closed out strong. They never did the last verse of Rosemary, I got the feeling Phil had decided not to go back to that slow space once the energy got back up. Using Rosemary as a sandwich didn't work out as well as it might have looked on paper.
Impressive show, Trey brings a lot to the table and I've never been a huge fan. I was really impresed with his ability to listen and add totally unique parts to the music. Sless was on steel all night, added some nice parts. Osby barely played in the second set (not on stage until Desire). Great time, very mellow scene, looking forward to today but I could use more sleep.
>>>Watchtower is a throwaway
To each there own. Watchtower was one of the highlights for me. Rockin' hard with great vocals from Joan.
Loved the China > Golden Road opener too. The other highlight for me was of course the St. Stephen > The Eleven. Just sick! I'm so glad Trey sat in for the entire second set. The interaction between him and Phil was just great to watch. Nothing but huge smiles all around. I think Barry was on petal steel all night. I don't think he ever picked up a guitar.
Desire>Rosemary>Jam> - This was a huge momentum killer for me. Very slow and sleepy. It was hard to get back up for the Fire > Rider.
Flame away.
Couple of quick stories. -
Box of Rain kicks in and a big beach ball lands on the stage. Larry steps up and kicks it with all his might back into the crowd and whack! He nails this rail rider right in the face. Ha! Larry cringes, says ‘sorry’ and shakes it off.
I was lucky enough to get a ticket in the pit. – Thanks Chonks! So I get in during the middle of Trey’s set and security marks the back of my ticket with a magic marker and gives me a wristband. So after a few tunes I go for a walk and run into my buddy BAFP2. Dumb ass me decides to give BFAP2 my ticket so he can enjoy a few songs from the pit, not thinking at all about the ticket already being ‘marked’. Well security sees BFAP with no wristband and a marked ticket and proceeds to TAKE the ticket. Oh shit. Trey’s set ends and I somehow get my dumb ass back down there. Head security dude says “okay, which one of you has seat number 9?” I hesitantly raise my hand. The guy gives me a lecture and says “I’ve seen it all dude, nice try but not even close. Here’s you ticket back. Oh and you should have seen the look on your buddy’s face when I took the ticket. It was priceless. I thought he was gonna shit his pants right there.” A really nice guy who could have been real dick about my bonehead move.
I caught Phil's wristband after the show too
Have fun tonight folks.
Last night was the prayer answered, this is what so many of us have been hoping for- Trey sitting in the whole 2nd set with P&F.
WOW!
Let's hope we get more and more as this tour continues to build and get tighter.
What a perfect place for this tour to make it highest stand, Vermont, bringing it all back home.
Welcome home y'all!
Golden Road and St. Stephen were worth the price of admission alone.
Overall another great show. Too many folks on stage, and couldn't hear Barry enough. Trey took over a bit too much in 2nd set, but so what else is new.
Phil's voice........A+........especially on Birdsong.
J-
And please don't take my comments as 'critisicms', because they are NOT. This is a forum to discuss these very issues.
If life were all peaches n' cream.....
As I said, another stellar show from the guys!!
J-
And remember, trey and mike a Joisey boys, so tonight has that added interest...
Absolutely, Rich-
there will definitely be an added boost due to the 'home-town' venue.
ANYONE WHO THOUGHT THEY MIGHT GO TONIGHT SHOULD definitely go, the trey/phil set alone is worth the admission price by far-- last night was awesome .....letsee..... if you cant make it all..... you can get there around 800 pm for phil and co.....
i thot last nite's show was every superlative imaginable.....should be dynamite weather second nite in a row .....
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<processing>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
CAUTION....
Isn't Phil an Friends following the BVDuo? They are slotted for 4:30pm start, so Phil should be going on around 6 or 6:15. 'GRAB' is the closer/headliner tonight, I believe.
DON'T STEP ON THE TRACKS....
I didn't notice Big Brown on stage last night. Then again it was crowded up there!
Agree with Sunra. I'd bet on Phil and the gang tuning up around 6:15ish...
cool venue. much like tweeter, but steeper. better sound, imho.
J-
I was there. Trey was like the guest that wouldn't leave. First off, I love his playing. He's a brilliant musician and I've gone to see him in a variety of capacities and have always enjoyed him. I even enjoyed what I saw of his set last night. But, I went to see Phil and the guys in his band, not a Trey marathon.
The show opened with the band doing their thing, and it was great. Joan was an incredible presence right from the start. Even when she wasn't singing, her presence seemed to have the ability to create a sense of balance and cool to an already great situation. The show was going just fine. I was totally into everything, especially Joan's RA tune in the beginning. Then, who walks on but Trey. Woo Hoo!
A great Watchtower. A monumental watchtower. Everybody totally tearin it up. Such a major tune that it sort of just ended the first set. They didn't even turn the lights on. Very cool ending to a great set. Trey was a very nice bonus. Some of the tradeoffs he had with Osby were particularily noteworthy.
Then, the second set. No Osby. Trey left center/center. I'm not going to get into a song by song account of this because each of the songs were on there own interesting and great to be part of. However, there were far too many instances of Trey dictating the approach. Too many times when I looked at Phil and saw him looking at Larry and shrugging his shoulders as if to say "I don't know what he's doing, but it'll all work out". I went to see Phil, and a well oiled machine. THese guys are all superb musicians, and they've worked together over the past couple months to establish lines of communication. I wanted to see the end results of that effort. Instead, I got to see A great band play in a reactive fashion to another incredible musician. I wanted to see Larry strut his stuff. I wanted to hear Greg Osby's take on this music. I wanted to hear Sless stretch out. As well as everybody else. Instead, what I got was a phenomenal concert that was more a test of a band's ability to accomodate a guy who's used to taking center, and for some reason seems to dictate that role.
It is one thing to come and be a guest. It is entirely different to come and take over the party. Not that there's anything wrong with a Trey party, but I want a PHil party.
So, my take on it is great concert, but would have been more of the event I was looking for had I got to see PHils band sans Trey.
Trey, don't worry. We know you're a great guitar player. JUst take a fucking break now and then.
chuck thanks again for those tickets
The way I understood it Trey is part of Phils band for this part of the tour, Barry will be playing Steel only at least until Trey leaves.
Somebody post this show and the 25th show on etree!!! im dying
This show was full of trainwrecks. Can't say they came anywhere close to hitting any segues on the night. Some of the jams were pure POWER and that is where this band is hitting its stride, but in terms of getting out there and coming back, this band does not have IT yet. Although three guitars was far too many on stage, and even moreso when Osby was up there, Trey was the only one who kept this show above water.
More musings on Camden:
SECOND SET - incredible energy to start. As was mentioned, the JAM>TERRAPIN>ST.STEPHEN to open was an absolute monster. Trey fit in really well here and Phil was very animated throughout! His singing was excellent. Sless led the way out of ST. STEPHEN, with one of his dream/funk grooves on the pedal steel; these always seem to raise the hair on my head and totally get me psychedelicized. After the torrid opening sequence this was a really effective bridge into the rest of the set.
I absolutely loved the ROSEMARY>DESIRE>ROSEMARY suite, though to be fair, this was played at 12:30 in the morning and I could see that many around me were having a tough time comprehending this sequence at this time of night. I thought it was fantastic. . . . This was the only time that I felt that Trey wasn't completely in psynch with the rest of the band. The FIRE>RIDER was a powerful closer and Trey recovered nicely for this one.
The BOX OF RAIN was particularly beautiful. The pedal steel was the dominant voice during this one (as it should be). A gorgeous version.
Larry Campbell is an absolute master of stringed instruments! I don't think he has ever played the same sequence of notes ever. He just seems to get better and better. Amazing. He reminds me of Derek Trucks in this regard. GD-style music needs a heavy guitar presence and Campbell provides that and more!
I like the Sless-on-steel approach, as it provides for new textures in the music. When the band gets rolling, Sless seems to be capable of adding a deft touch to the currents of the music, which although subtle, adds a whole new dimension to the soundscape. He's like a Bob Bralove *and* a front-line player all rolled into one: essential and yet very subtle.
Overall: a great show and a really fun night of music and madness. . .in Camden, NJ of all places!
"IN THE STRANGEST OF PLACES, IF YOU LOOK AT IT RIGHT. . . ."
Off to Holmdel.
Sean, (Splintered Custie) (Sunlite)),
I won't comment on your review because this stuff is so subjective, however.... ..just want to set the record straight and call you on the "I caught the wristband comment". From what I understand, you did not "catch" the wristband.
Let me explain...We were blessed to be second row center last night as we were in Raleigh and when Phil threw his bands in Raleigh, he sent the first one going left of us and the second to the right. In Raleigh I screamed something like “what about us Phil, the 50 year old heads in the middle doing our part to complete the circuit"? I believe he heard me. Last night I’m pretty sure he recognized us and threw them to us. Wil aka "Lightning Wil" (my bro to my left) caught the first one and when I was admiring that fact, I failed to notice the second one coming at me, which according to my other bro "Special Ed" (to my right), landed at my feet between Ed and me. Some dude from the front row (I guess you) reached down between our feet and picked it up. Ed told me he grabbed his (your?) hand but decided not to make an issue of it. It reminded me how many foul balls or home runs at a ballpark are retrieved. So in truth, the only man who "caught" a Phil wristband last night was the venerable Lightning Wil
I'm writing this not to ask for it ….or to sour grape (well…maybe a little of that).
Either way, enjoy the cool memento of a killer show.
When I have some time, I plan to review the Orlando and Raleigh shows and this Camden classic. All three were different lineups and in my book, all three were spectacular.
until Next Time,
Uncle Al
amazing show, great vibe, sound, etc...GRAB was rocking, we were in the pit and many were jamming out with us, harder edge than i thought it'd be, great chemistry between trey and mike...'drifting' was awesome...p&f was soooooooo great, the sound was LOUD and i loved it, joan was so sexy, dancing when not singing...trey and osby were geting each other off during 'watchtower, couldnt hear sless too well, but baracco was going off, dancing in his seat... 'birdsong' was different than others, unique time changes and chord progressions, sweet jam in the middle of it, heard TOO and other songs in there, then back to 'birdsong'...but the highlight of the night to me was the 'jam>terrapin'...it was like an hour long, trey was creating sooooooo much energy...and the people who say he takes over, or jams too much with himself are wrong IMO, i watched phil closely,(and was physically close to him also, 20 yards) and he loves trey's playing, trey makes energy, fun, power, larry was getting off on it too, trey is so good with phil... both yrey and phil listening to each other, phil wants trey to "take over", he wasnt shrugging his shouldees as if to say what?, he was enjoying the interplay...finally, M O L O was amazing, so high octane, took each jam to the next level, my new favorite drummer of all time!!!! anyway i thought is was a very poweful high energy show, A-...
Al,
Sorry you missed the wristband. If you go to any other shows this tour, maybe Headband or Headband Jr. will toss you their sweaty headband at the end of the show. Course, if they do that, we won't get to call 'em handband anymore....
Thanks Unbroken,
I appreciate the sentiments, but there is absolutely no need to feel sorry 4 me.
The way I see it, it’s ALL prefect.
I'm still glowing from last night
What a gift Phil is!
Hi Al - Wow....I'm not sure what to say. Wristband controversy.
You are correct sir (and many thanks for calling me out on it). I did not 'catch' Phil's wristband. I reached down and picked it up. I guess I should have use the word 'got' or 'retrieved' Phil's wristband instead. I'll be more careful next time.
I am surprised that you believe Phil purposely intended to throw it to you though. From my standpoint, Phil was just tossing it out there. I do like your analogy of retreiving a ball at a baseball game. Whoever gets it gets it...no?
If you really believe that it was intended for you, I am more than happy to give it up. Let me know and I'll send it to you. It kinda smells anyway. I can't live with a reputation of being a 'wristband bandit'.
I hope you had a great show I look forward to reading your reviews.
I was sitting in the 3rd row, and Phil cleary was throwing the wistband at me.
Splintered,
It's yours' fair and square.
However, if you want to get rid of it, I suggest auctioning it off on ebay and giving the proceeds to the Unbroken Chain Foundation. What did Mark McGwire 70th HR go for? Think of all the good you could do?
Definatly a killer show... St. Stephen!!! Ive never heard heat like that.
I was fairly far up in the lawn. However, I am fairly sure Phil was throwing the wrist band to me. Just email me to set up the details on how to send it to me.
Saw P& F @ HOB AC in Dec w/ Chris Robinson. The show was fantastic. Went to the Feb stint at the tower. Some good, some bad. The Camden show for me was just not that good. Joan has a great voice, yet it isn't utilized enough when I see this band together. Additionally, I enjoy some lyrics thrown in with LONG jams. Too much jamming (not rocking jamming), not enough singing and dancing jamming. Just one mans opinion.
that camden show was sick! stephen>eleven. holy moly
i think it went on and on....trey looked lost during some parts...worst camden show or phil show i ever saw....
i think this was just an off night...
and what is with startin so late....
waiting and wishing that the next run of shows i do will be better...
any explanation why this show was so bad would help...
the only real highlight was Rosemary....and that was so so......slippin
sorry to be negative but i only speak the truth...
and the truth is trey should go home and stay there...
or not be so out there during th show.
PEACE
This show was mediocre. The Trey show sucked until about 1 hour into it with Mr. Completely finalyl rocking out. I was wondering why they needed to conduct band practice on stage when I was paying good money. Can't they do that before touring?
The Phil show was okay with Trey coming out at the end for a fairly good but sorta sloppy Watchtower. I really don't like what Phli does with these songs, relative to what I've seen pre-1993. I then left after the first set because I was tired and I'm a jaded and snobby Deadhead and Phishhead and I was disappointed and tired and had to drive back to Baltiore.
It was nice to have to go past a balck biker bar to get to my car with the cops telling us to roll up our windows and lock our doors. Not exactly the kind of place I like to be at Midnight. And that's with 5 cops and cop cars sitting right outside the door of the place. Nice.
Bottom line: Either start practicing together a lot more before the tour, or charge
$15 a ticket when you can't seem to get it together as seasoned musicians.
i agree, show wasn't worth the money!!! Trey, go back to Phish where you belong...
phish sucks and that is why they broke up, please don't break up this wonerful band.....go home
ROb
5+ hours of music for fifty bucks - seems like a steal. Go see any major band and you will pay as much or more for an hour and a half with an opener not related to the band at all.
I'm still tired, one day later, but the show was well played.
Kudos to Trey. He's played with 4 bands - Oysterhead,Trey Band, GRAB, and Phil - in 2 weeks (that I know of) with different material.
He's definitely going above and beyond!
so weird one person likes it, one person hates it... ive been thinking i never have a bad time or a shitty show, i always find the positive in each show, too bad other souls cant be open and positive and see the good in things...i loved the ferry ride over, the nice lot scene and multiple shakedowns, good GRAB set, great PHIL show, great ride home etc...lifes too short, "its all good"
All so subjective - often our opinions and memories are affected by the night, the location, the mood of the crowd - probably a big determinant is who you are hanging with that can make a good show great or even an average show special.
That said, went with 3 huge Heads, 2 of which (quite strangley) had never seen Phil - felt the lot scene was fun (although lot did not open until 3 pm) with a limited but fair police prescence (was near anarchy Dead summer '04) - trekked in about 830 and settled in for a solid first set - the second set, however, was outstanding - whether or not this crew (esp with Trey) can "turn on a dime" was a non-issue - the songs chosen were perfect and played with great passion - the Rosemary late in the show did not lose all of us and really took this performance to the next level.
I was exhausted after 2 SF shows in Dec and 3 in Philly in Feb - batteries recharged, wish I was now seeing more...again. I hope everyone gets out there to enjoy and appreciate what is still out there - criticize, ponder, compare but just enjoy.
Well Jeez, how was the take home dsbd CD of this show?????
>>>>>>Watchtower is a throwaway
To each there own. Watchtower was one of the highlights for me.
B is the correct answer.
DSBD confirms, this was a great show. Short first set, loved Watchtower. Second set was about 2 hours.
This is the best live music of the summer!
Over and out.
i still have a happy vibe from the show, i love trey and phil together............
i caught phils wristband once at the spectrum '02
i had my hands out like i was collecting water and it just plopped right in there.
never caught a foul ball or a loose puck, but i caught phils wristband.
I was hoping to find the time to write a full on review for this epic show however due to time and space considerations I think I will concentrate on writing a review for the Raleigh show mostly as my thank you for the “alive and well”, Nick Glennon who once again treated us the best southern hospitality one could imagine.
Now as far as this Camden show, I will unabashedly label this as one of the best Phil shows of all time, certainly the best Camden Phil show ever. As usual, there are so many shows within the show including our wonderfully peaceful ferry over the flood crested brown muddy Big River water and the serendipitous set of events that got me up close and personal in the second row dead center for the second set.... followed by the scramble for Uncle Al’s (wrist) band.
From the moment Trey filled the open mic, this show took off to dimensions of higher ground and sheer bliss. It’s been a while since I have seen a balls-to-the-wall blistering Watchtower (The Q’s 11-17-01 Stabler and 11/30/03 Tower shows come to mind) and this Trey version (highlighted with his Osby interplay) soared to the “it” factor and beyond. Same for Terrapin….as this was by far the best post Q version I can recall. With it’s triple time beat leading up to Inspiration and Phils heartfelt and incidentally on-key vocals, it could have been the best ever sans Merriweather Post 7-21-02. Trey ripped Stephen and the transition and fulfillment of the 11 was magical and electric. The tightly performed Rosemary sandwich was a delicious respite from the frenzy ..then leading to a tribal Fire into a rousing Rider. …and then the perfect Box ending at 1:20 am. ………whew………PERFECT SET …AND ANYONE CLAIMING OTHERWISE IS (I reserve judgment). Let me just say listen to the board and judge for yourself.
In Raleigh, I noticed with Barry exclusively on pedal steel, there was room for one more guitar …..and thank the Lord (and Phil) Trey stepped magnificently into that spot in Camden. And I thank the rest of the band for giving Trey the room to be Trey. I don’t really care for Trey’s Grab and I’m not much of a phishhead, but this talented man sure can play the shit out of this music. I also want to comment that Barry was not too low in the mix as he provides great color and soaring Jerrylike leads.. This tour is indeed Larry’s coming out party, as he has let it rip as the band’s lead guitarist and new vocalist. I wish to thank him for his graciousness in letting Trey step into that roll for the second set. Rob has been his usual joyful stellar self and Joan has been magnificent. Molo is still The King of All Rhythms and Phil makes it all happen. His bass line powers every song and every jam …….and amazingly, his voice has been consistently great this tour. Osby, who shined in the first set is indeed a welcome addition and really adds flavor, soul and jazz to the overall big band sound.
On board for this miracle show was Wristband Wil, Special Ed (my old buddy you are moving much too slow), Duck, Warrior David, Less and Kody. Special thanks to my gym buddy Jon K who does a yeomen’s job at these shows running safety (and running me past the guards).
I only wish my bro LG could have been there (and Brackish, Louis and Nick)
Next Time…....Scranton Montage....one week from tomorrow……yahoo!
Have a Happy 4th!
Uncle Al
I thought this show was great, I prefered it to the pnc one the next night, to be honest.
china cat was a good opener. was very glad to hear golden road next. bird song kiced ass. it was definitely the highlight of the first for me. btw, anyone else ever notice how phil sings, 'stolen rain' where the real lyric is 'snow and rain'? he's been doing it this way since at least summer 03 and wonder why this is the case. I like bartering lines and watchtower was a good set closer.
second set. I went up to the back of the lawn towards the end of setbreak and hung out with a bunch of fun-loving zoners for a good part of the set. thanks for letting me hang out with you guys!
anyhow, terrapin was awesome. phil sang the inspiration part, which he was not doing in feb. I was most stoked on that. st stephen > 11 was great. the band was on fire. at this point, I decided to go down where it was louder further down on the lawn where I stayed for the rosemary > desire > rosemary part. some people above are claiming this was a momentum killer, but not for me. it was possibly my favorite part of the show. I so love phil doing rosemary and I'd never heard desire before. I thought it was a great RA tune. I really can't comprehend people bitching about phil doing his songs. they're great and they're NEW matereal for phil. what's not to love?
went back up to the top of the hill for the rest of the show. FOTM smoked, really enjoyed larry's verse. didn't expect that. rider was also a good rocker. phil laid out some nice bombs to close the set. box closer was effin' great. it was nailed perfectly and it was a great end to the show.
I walked out with a bunch of zoners which was good for some laughs. I had to split though while a bunch of people rolled in to use the pisser. I was afraid that my ride would kill me if I was the last one to the car, so I apologize for not getting to say goodbye to everyone. but yeah, once I got to the car, of course, I waited for like another 30 mins for our other buddy. go figure
>>>But, I went to see Phil and the guys in his band, not a Trey marathon
i wasnt at this show but i spoke with a buddy who absolutely loves PLE and Trey but he told me the same exact thing and he had a head full of fungus, i figured he would have been stunned with the lineup and i am way more critical than he is. He told me that Barry had some smoking playing going on in the first set and really enjoyed it but right when Trey came out he proceeded to dominate everything. Trey is the master of superhero guitar licks but he is NOT good at sharing the stage or group effort... never has been. He is used to being the leader and director. Give me Sco over trey any day... the man really should be more sensative towards group dynamics and attempt to not blow his wad over the entire crowd
Here's a little more detail about the setlist. Upon further listening, I would say the setlist in the 2nd set went a little more like this:
...St. Stephen>
Millenium Jam>
The Eleven>
Jam>
Rosemary>...
>>head full of fungus, i figured he would have been stunned with the lineup and i am way more critical than he is. He told me that Barry had some smoking playing going on in the first set and really enjoyed it but right when Trey came out he proceeded to dominate everything.
I was in a similar state and had a similar reaction. Difference is, the eleven that just DIED was not because trey took over, it was because they just couldn't get a groove goin'. I haven't heard the show again yet, but i was severely disappointed in trey's lack of stepping up. We were in the 5th row for Stephen>Eleven. Phil and Larry (consumate ensemble musicians, along with everyone else) just sort of hung back and were all smiles with trey. But then the jam in the middle of steven went NOWHERE and we went to the last verse. The millenium jam was led by phil (support from larry and rob), but trey never took one blistering lead in the eleven (admittedly a tough song to really shine during when compared to Jerry). THe 'jam' out of the eleven was one of the most painful musical experiences of my career. Everyone (particularly trey) looked uncomfortable on stage. Trey was doing this odd 'dance' where he'd drop his right shoulder. The seque into that bluesy end of the eleven was completely botched (listed to the 11 from 11/10/01 (I think, it's the opener right around 11/17/01)) warren and phil NAIL the transition.
Overall, Trey blew an opportunity to take the music to the next level. The next night P&F seemed to lower their expectations a bit and just kept playing their own stuff while Trey just strummed along to Franklin's and gdtrfb. I've listened to these a few times and am pretty sure he never even took one solo and I know he didn't sing one verse of GDTRFB.
Anyway, just my $0.02.
trey didn't step up????? what show were you watching? i'm not even a trey fan and he smoked. according to phil it was a 'great night' and trey was "brilliant". and everyone looked uncomfortable? i sure saw a lot of smiles and great interplay, especially between osby and trey. listen to the recording, thats all i have to say.
Wow! And I thought the St. Stephen/Eleven was cookin'!! Definitely my favorite part of the show. I guess I need to get "tapes" and see if maybe I was just caught up in the moment. Can't rule it out I guess.
I can not believe there are mixed reviews on this show-not that i don't respect opinions but this show was mind blowing. Atleast the 2nd set of Phil. Trey definitely took it to the next level (even furthur) you could hear it in Phil's playing. I defy anyone to listen to Terrapin>St. Stephen and say otherwise...
Not to pile on but I thought the show was special - the first set was as solid as any has been and the second set... well, the songs chosen, in the order played, fly off the page but do not even come close to translating into what I saw - that second set from Terrapin through Rosemary to Rider was beautifully played with intriguiging turns and with great power, with some real spaciness mixed in for good measure. (Of note - I have liked Trey no more nor less than Sco or Sless in this mix, and thus my thoughts are driven by the group, not by the players). I would never suggest it was the best show ever as that is too subjective but would suggest it stands up quite well to some of the best PLF shows and is instantly one of my favorites.
I'm not a huge phish head, but have always respected trey. Those 4/15-4/17/99 shows were mind blowing - trey's distinct, clear playing layed over dead tunes. I was hoping to hear some of that distinct sound from him and was a bit disappointed when we didn't get it. During st. stephen, he mostly played rhythm. I've listed to the 7/1 show a few times (I was there as well) and have yet to hear him really stand out in the mix - and it didn't seem like a technical difficulty.
very good show still feeling the vibe
for me it was epic.
if not for the trey singing the northbound train line the night would have been perfection.
the company i kept (b4, during, after)
the vibe of the venue (on the inside)
the MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC
((((((((((((((((((PHEEEEEL))))))))))))))))))))))
i can't believe they fucking played rosemary
phil rocks
All you coming in late, let me know...how was the concert at Camden. I decided not to go and am relying on the zone to let me know how it was. So, how the F(#* are you all???
hope you didnt have tix
Where is the setlists?
no tix, just a desire to be with family. Although, my brighter side said "stay the hell out of Camden"
so ppl,, who was there?????????????
2nd set was one of the sickest sets i have ever seen. trey played entire second set with barry on pedal steel and everyone else.
terrapin> jam> st. stephen> eleven was an hour long itself. i left not too long after that because i was beat.
jams were sick. during st stephen phil pointed to trey for him to take the solo and trey just went off. you could see phil grinning ear to ear at times during it.
anyways, more tomorrow...

Nice setlist.. does Barry not play guitar anymore?? What gives?
Apparently no guitar from Barry so far. If Trey is going to sit in as much as he did tonight, this kind of makes sense. I can't remember if PLF is going it alone without the Duo and G.R.A.B at any more of the announced shows. Perhaps if they don't perform with a guest guitarist Barry will play some. I think he only played steel at Raleigh too, and while Trey was in the house, he didn't join PLF on stage that night. Osby's presence surely has something to do with this decision.
Double post. This place's got mice;-)
that there "desire" song is real purdy i'd love to hear the phil & friends do it - granted i'm from the easy east coast and all
More Osby! Less Trey!
geez. I haven't seen Trey in 14 years. I think I'm good for another ten after tonight.
"He's talking a lot, but he's not saying anything!"
~David Byrne~
I can't believe Sless sat out for the whole show...
and that's all I have to say about that...
First, check out Conscious Alliance, the group sponsoring the food drive. Very cool people working for an excellent cause.
Also, their table has many many outstanding posters for sale (besides the Stanley Mouse poster, which is 10 food items or you can buy it ($20.00??).
Amazing show, in my opinion!
A few random thoughts before I crash for the night/morning:
Watching band members blow each other away was awesome to see. Trey and Joan were just in awe of Larry's strumming at one point. Another time, Phil almost stopped playing to check out Trey's insane jam.
Osby was only out for a select number of songs, but added a hell of a lot when he played.
Trey did what a guest can do--add their own style and playing to the mix, allowing the band to take the music even further. A couple jams reminded me of the frantic pace of old Phish jams. I've gotta say, I loved every minute of him out there tonight.
Joan didn't sing most of the songs. It was split between Phil, Rob, and Joan. Trey and Larry (Phil needs to let Larry sing more!!) got in there on a fantastic Fire on the Mountain that I thought would end the show.
5) headband(no headband) smoked all night and i thought osby was a great addition

good show, but definitely one of the weirder I've seen.
Not the best show - 1st set was weak and seemed to be having sound problems - never quite jelled.
2nd set had its moments - but a lot of it was Trey wailing (which if you love Trey you would have loved this show). I would have preferred more Osby. St. Stephen-The Eleven smoked. Nice to hear Rosemary. The Ryan Adams song was a momentum killer. Fire and Rider were strong. Some great - some weak moments. I'd give it a B
>>The Ryan Adams song was a momentum killer.
Bartering Lines>? That was first set, slow but cool
I assume Desire is the Bob Dylan version?!
and no Sless for the whole show?? I'm worried
Desire is the title of a Bob Dylan Album,
not a Bob Dylan Song.
maybe it was U2's song ? (yikes)
desire is a ryan tune
(had to google it)
Two hearts fading, like a flower.
And all this waiting, for the power.
For some answer, to this fire.
Sinking slowly. The wateras higher.
Desire
With no secrets. No obsession.
This time I'm speeding with no direction.
Without a reason. What is this fire?
Burning slowly. My one and only.
Desire
You know me. You don't mind waiting.
You just can't show me, but God I'm praying,
That you'll find me, and that you'll see me,
That you run and never tire.
Desire
Desire is a Ryan Adams song, you got two of them at this show. A couple of revisions to the set list:

the Sless report is confusing, some say no with Trey onstage. some say Barry on pedal steel all night.
o ooo what I want to know, was he in headband?
(love jerseyjoe's description of Rob..."headband(no headband)")
Sless was on steel pedal all night.
Rob....no headband.
Sless reports are confusing cuz if he had his way I think he'd play from backstage. The guy was hidden. I don't know if that's where he's placed or if that's his request...
My personal highlight was when Trey grabbed the mic and screamed "Fuck you, Philzone! I hate you all!!! NOW SHUSHISHI UP AND COMET O TREY."* Pretty funny.
*Where is the Reaper?
I am not a fan of Trey, but the show was pretty good overall. I thought that Larry kind of lacking on the first two songs. He seemed to be in a funk. What is funny about that is when the band came on stage, I saw that Larry was wearing a red shirt, and I say to my buddy... "Larry in red, trouble ahead". Ya know the old Jerry saying... well, I think it just hold true for the shirt too, no matter who is wearing it.
I called the Rosemary before the show started... sometimes you just get a feel for what's going to be played by watching the ever so subtle things going on. Yes, I used to be one of Dionne Warwick's live psychic friends...
The Rosemary sandwich was a real treat. I thought that it was a beautiful way to bust out the a new song... RA writes some great tunes... and if you can't come to grips with that, then I'm sorry. His songs are a part of the rotation.
And as for the Eleven with Trey... heck... I think he's still playing that solo...
Show grade: B+
I thought the whole show was devastating! I didn't know if the Trey/Mike thing was going to be any good, but it was awesome! If you didn't like this set, you are either too old or deaf! I can't believe how picky some of you are. Phil and Firends was amazing! They were alot better than I expected also, and I just saw them at the Tower in Feb. This concert blew that performance away! That Watchtower was unworldly!
Super-sweet Birdsong
Trey as "the guest who wouldn't leave".
Trey can jam, but Larry is head shoulders above everyone.
One day (not soon but someday) we will be paying to see Larry Campbell and Friends. Fire on the Mountain gave us a taste of what that might be like. The future is bright.
Larry just gets better and better. It's really a joy to see and hear.
This is the second show I've seen with Trey. While I lost interest with him, Gordon and the duo, I just loved him with Phil. He's got a certain style and energy and he brought that to Phil's band. I like seeing him every once in a while....just to change things up.
LET LARRY SING MORE-that fire was HOTTTTTTTT!!!
HEADBAND(NO HEADBAND) WAS ON FIRE ALL NIGHT
molo is the MAN!
trey went from WORST to FIRST(his set was painful to me and i'm not deaf and only 38) but was good with the phriends
any tie dyes this tour? or is that still forbidden on stage?
Forgot about Larry singing Fire. Was it the last verse only? Damn, didn't realize he's got pipes too!!!
great reviews guys...leaving now for pnc !
good one jojo! has someone already started making "trey hates the zone" t-shirts ?!?!
Tie dyes still seem to be forbidden.
Off to PNC also. Whoever is at the show...enjoy!
he has songs as well
would love to see some of Larry's and Joan's songs make it into the rotation
I don't blame Larry for being in a funk if he's going to have to share the stage w/ that wanker for the rest of the tour.
Awsome show!! Thats all i can say. Dancin and smokin the whole night, great time, great set list. Show grade - A
The Birdsong was utterly off the hook, thanks especially to Greg Osby. He and Barry volleyed hot leads and also played simultaneously while Larry was chiming in with sick chord progressions, and Greg also got into it with Joan, keying off her vocal riffs. Jamming at its highest.
Greg also shined on a blistering Watchtower, egging Trey on for all he was worth.
The whole first set really rang my bell, as a matter of fact. Starting with Larry driving China Cat super hard. Then Golden Road lit up, and Joan kinda strolled on stage, not saying anything, but her hips were swinging as the house camera focused in on her and Rob opened up with "See that girl...." The place went nuts.
I spent the second set up on the lawn, watching Philly and Camden glow in the lites as the crescent moon set. The scene was a 180-degree glittering panorama, and the lights on the Ben Franklin bridge were going through all sorts of color changes. On the other side was some lit-up retro tall building in Camden. In the middle of the scene was this kick-ass show and hippies dancing on the lawn.
The first half of the set seemed like one long no-holds-barred Trey run, and then I just closed my eyes and felt that beautiful Rosemary.
I had my hopes up that the unfamilar song was a Joan tune, but I see it was Ryan's. Oh well.
One drawback -- the camera work really sucked -- missed much of the action, out of focus a lot, and despite a multitude of screens, they all showed the same scene. It could have really added a lot, but instead it was utterly pedestrian.
And then the lovely ferry ride across the river. What great great venue this is.
yes this show had *weaknesses* but i found it to be fabulous pretty much a~>z...i was moved beyond dancin and was feelin a pretty hard '01 vibe at mulitple times with 3/5ths of the Q representing!!!!
JoJo i LOVE you dude!!!!!!!
nice meeting you and slydell and anyone else i mighta met for the 1st time...
mostly the magic was in the strength of the women i got the great fortune of sharing some space with throughout the night...AND JIA who i adore. (and if anyone can stil forgive/stand/still love my raging obnoxious ass after last night i am really lucky!!)
peace
>>>I had my hopes up that the unfamilar song was a Joan tune, but I see it was Ryan's. Oh well.
priceless
Nice review Randall, your words painted a nice picture. Too bad about the camera crew. Maybe they were dosed!
>>>>"He's talking a lot, but he's not saying anything!"
that perfectly describes Trey to me...but there were some good moments.
LARRY ROCKS!!! JOAN IS HOT!! ROB AND MOLO ARE THE SHIT!
I missed Barry....
and PHIL IS AMAZING.
I loved the Osby addition too.
Jojo-that is so damn FUNNY! "Fuck you Philzone"
All in all, I had a freakin super effin crazy ass blast!
I'd have to agree with these comments for the most part:
"Not the best show - 1st set was weak and seemed to be having sound problems - never quite jelled.
I'd give it a B"
Minus the Osby comment. This band has some POWER in it, but in terms of taking a jam out there and bring IT back, this band is missing. Some have compared this band to the Q and there really is no basis for comparison, imo. Three guitars onstage was excessive to say the least, and throwing Osby in the mix was like asking for a personal crow to be caged atop your head daily as your personal alarm clock. You can tell Molo wants to drive this train further, and you see it in Rob too that he is trying to push but it's just not there yet.
Sless throws in some good licks at times, Garciaesque I suppose you could say, but he was relegated to pretty much backstage all night in volume and appearance. All in all, I would say Trey was a highlight on the night as he saved Terrapin and the 11.
The power this band brings at times is intense, problem is that they are not bringing it into the song but reaching it during the song because the segues are essentially trainwrecks. It boggles my mind how the band from February that had so much momentum is not visible anymore but at the moment I'm blaming it on an extra guitar and Osby.
>>>mostly the magic was in the strength of the women i got the great fortune of sharing some space with throughout the night...AND JIA who i adore. (and if anyone can stil forgive/stand/still love my raging obnoxious ass after last night i am really lucky!!)
Dude, HOW were you at all obnoxious??????
you are a supreme, twirling, amazing, beautiful goddess.
I had the best time with y'all!!
last night was good but not great...unlike Atlanta where they had a wicked jam with Dickey during Liz Reed but nothing really stood out. 5 songs in the first set and one was a crappy Ryan Adams song.During the 3 shows I went to I got ryan songs every show and I sat down each time. Didnt find out they were Ryan songs until later. I told a friend I would check out a Ryan show with a free ticket but if I dont like the songs with Joan singing I wouldnt like it with jack daniels himself singing them. So my summer Phil is now over and I also decided that this year I am going to somewhere besides more Phil shows for new years.
So besides vegoose im done for the yr in regards to GD music....
rev, do us all a favor and stay the hell away from ryan adams
that's MR Jack Daniels for you sir!
rev -- dont be afraid of the unknown
seems as if your attitude is i havent heard it before so its not as good -- well maybe so -- the familiar is always easier to touch -- but sometimes the unknown can be just as sweet in due time
or maybe you have let your whole previous incident color what is happening
no offense -- sucks to be you if you have sworn off phil (sorry if i misread your post as to yoru intent) -- but i hope you are not swearing off phil
i did that with the dead after 91 -- i have regretted it ever since as years lost and never to be recaptured -- even if it wasnt as good as it had been, it is better than what's available
peace to you rev in this year --
ps -- i liked bartering line -- sue me
>>>So my summer Phil is now over and I also decided that this year I am going to somewhere besides more Phil shows for new years.
So yer not mad at me for heckling the band during the second set of The Ryman when things were moving reeeeaaaallly slloooooooooow?
>>JoJo i LOVE you dude!!!!!!!
Right back atcha, Jill!!!
...and the rest of the loco hens!
OK. After a few hrs. sleep, off to Saratoga.
"rev, do us all a favor and stay the hell away from ryan adams"
First off how can you speak for everyone when nobody knows who the hell ya are and secondly for trying to tell me what to do I have 2 words for you...
"no offense -- sucks to be you if you have sworn off phil (sorry if i misread your post as to yoru intent) -- but i hope you are not swearing off phil "
naw not swearing off Phil I enjoyed the show but can do without the Ryan Adams songs....I plan to go to more Phil shows but I want to see other things. I have missed more then my share of shows that came thru town while I was off seeing Phil. I burned a $100 pair of Nine Inch Nails fan club tickets that I couldnt transfer when I went to Bimbos for example. I guess what I was saying while typing drunk above is that I want to take a little time off of seeing GD music because right now its not so fresh to me.I want to go to new places as well I have been to Oregon and Washington once in my life. I know Phil wont play up there but somebody will. I know thru my posts it seems like I have been everywhere but I really have not been anywhere outside of the us.... Sorry to not have met ya Chonks...

Chonks-I am not afraid of the unknown it is just the opposite. I go to shows like Banyan,Mutaytor ,Acid Mothers Temple and other diverse groups that I have no idea what to expect. I did not know the songs I didnt like were cryan ryan adams songs until I had already sat down. I laughed like hell when I heard this thick northeastern accent say "what the fuck is this shit" in regards to the ryan adams song that was being sung. It could have been anyones song and I still wouldnt have liked it.
And for the record I WILL BE AT THE RYAN ADAMS SHOW ON 7/29 . As Zippy used to say I hope that pisses people off but I have a free ticket and I am going to wear my Philzone.com shirt unless weirdo freaks out and cancels the show.
He he he......
I love when folks that are just plain stuck on Phil try and tell other folks to be open minded...
AWESOME STUFF!!!!
I am with you rev...See all kinds of stuff.....
Why limit yourself?
I have never understood......
I too am all over the map with my shows...and I LOVE IT
Phil is great....but he is just ONE of many great acts out there
and not a cheap one either
morning Creek!
This week I am going to see Black Crowes with Robert Randolph on thurs and on friday I am going to check out Ministry and the Revolting Cocks. I think while I am in Wisconsin next weekend I may break away to go to Summerfest to check out the Dresdon Dolls and Panic at the disco. I have heard good things about those bands but have not seen them yet.
Even back 15 yrs ago I always wondered why some people would only listen to their Grateful Dead tapes and nothing else to this day that kinda obsession boggles my mind.
"Oldintheway" are you that cheap wannabe cowboy J.C? If so way to run away from me in Atlanta!!!
>>>> Ministry and the Revolting Cocks
My girls bro just went to this and Loved it...
That may be a lot of fun there!
good morning my friend...
We are going to a Crash Derby today! Whooo Hoo!!!

Miss ya
I hear ya Creek I may see ya in a couple of months up your way to see Roger Waters.

good rev, go, wear your cool shirt. i hope you get beat up.
Estimated Time Left Before Oldintheway is banned: 2days, tops
"good rev, go, wear your cool shirt. i hope you get beat up."
That will probably not happen but if you want to be pro-active trade your food stamps for a flight to Atlanta instead of trading it for crack! Otherwise know your roll and shut your mouth!
my roll? i definately do not know my roll. please do tell me.
what in the world makes you think i use food stamps, or crack for that matter?
your smrt
???
"As Zippy used to say I hope that pisses people off"
Get it right if you are going to quote my boy Zippy, Rev .....its "I hope you have a big problem with that". Geez!
Bla bla bla- it was fun, Trey got in the way a couple times, Barry wasn't up enough in the mix- St Stephen>The 11? How can that not do the trick? Phil definitely kicked our butts a few times when he really let loose with the goods- but he seemed a bit tuckered out by the end- probably the air 'quality' is a bit much for Californians. Not enough nitrous in the lot afterwards... And why isn't this thread over at 'show reviews '?/??
Indeed, that was fun! There is a full folder in the Show Review section and while I already rambled a bit there about the show, let me say that I really enjoyed Phil's Camden appearance. I thought the sound was fantastic throughout P&F, but the sound seemed too loud/distorted during GRAB. GRAB didn't, er, grab me at all, but it was an okay opener. I think with a better sound mix, I would have enjoyed it more. The mix really improved a lot by the time it was Phil's turn to take the stage.
Short first sets seem to be the rule this tour and this night was no exception. I was completely dialed in and the music was a wonderful wash of sonic colors. Phil and Friends delivered for me during the first set and by the time Anastasio came on for a run through of ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER, I felt that I had already achieved lift-off and could totally enjoy the heavy jamming on stage. During this tune, Campbell delivered with a great solo and Trey (wisely, I felt) choose not to engage him with a bunch of lick trading, but instead develop a somewhat static-groove jam, which in turn, developed into a cutting contest with Osby. Nice way to end the first set.
The second set completely deivered the goods as far as I and most of my friends were concerned! If you like Spacey Jamming, then this was for you and it's certainly worth the download (at the very least) and probably even the $25, if you've got the scratch handy. I can't say that I have much interest in Anastasio's projects where he is the leader, but he really brings a good "front-man" attitude to his work with Phil. Some may be put off by that aspect, but I find that it can really open things up. . .as it did this night in Camden!
Phil amazes me with his vital enrergy. He took the stage at 9:50 and save for a short break, he played until 1:15 AM. People around me who were easily half his age couldn't keep it together for such a late night and I felt bad for my friend Bob, who was nodding off during the stunning suite of ROSEMARY>DESIRE>ROSEMARY. Special mention has to go to the absolutely gorgeous BOX OF RAIN which sent us all home. This show was wonderful as far as I was concerned. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, that I took up a friend's offer of some Holmdel tickets and trucked over there the next night. As I expected at that show ~ as the opener ~ * audible sigh* Phil delivered a strong, rockin' show, which, while loads of fun, was nowhere in the league of the Camden blowout from the previous night. But I tend to go for the shows with lots of Spacey Jamming and the Holmdel show had that in short supply, relying on harder-edged (shorter) tunes, with little jamming. That's not a knock on the Holmdel show at all; in large part it's a result of the tour scheduling, coupled with playing to a Saturday night crowd. The Holmdel second set had a wonderful setlist I thought and the PLAYIN'>EYES to open was excellent!
Phil's core band is really like a GD-style Big Band - and they have a BIG sound. There's not much turn-on-a-dime style interplay (ala the Q), but the sound is even bigger and as they build up a head of steam on this tour, I think they will really take this music places it hasn't yet been. I look forward to enjoying more of this music with all of you.
I agree
I remember that that after a ten minute intro jam that included Wharf Rat (gentlemen, start your engines ), and some other teases that the night finally started off with China Cat. The Watchtower was of note. Quite good, elegantly and powerfully played. Joan can sing those ballads, but shit...it took so long to get off the ground, and then they went and grounded themselves again...bad song choice. First set was fairly forgettable.
Second set started out with a Terrapin that had moments, and finally got itself into gear. The second set, much like last years Red Rocks was excellent. The musicianship up to par, and exceeding any expectations.
I was in the front row and only saw Rob, Molo and Barry in the monitors. WTF...lay the stage out better folks. That is just dumb. There was twenty feet of empty stage to the left that could have been utilized to see the musicians.
Then the bs. Man...drawn out intro, then Phil singing (and he sucked, and I like his singing alot...Joan took over and it got somewhere, then Phil felt compelled to jump back in with more awful vocal.
Other than that, it was pretty damned awesome. Worth the trip.
on reviews page others feel trey blows, and here too, i cant get it, i think he opens it up as said before, he makes instant energy, phil loves trey's playing, i prefer the spacey jammy shows too, maybe too much for some, but i like it...PNC was less jammy, more straight forward...cant wait to hear the 'jam>terrapin' it seemed like a looooooooooooong jam!!!
In all honesty, it was Molo's night and Trey, who I am no fan of played right along the center pocket with John and Barraco...
Two of my most revered musicians, Molo and Barraco...and they were locked in. I'd give more credit to Sless, as I am sure it is due, but I couldn't hear him, and couldn't see him and that made it difficult to turn on the "separation" factor...sound wasn't the greatest we've heard...but it wasn't horrible and up on the lawn, if you were centered, the sound was pretty darned good.
I found Camden to be a pretty big let down. The Terrapin was the best I've seen in quite some time with Phil's vocals clear and pristine(yes, I did just say that). Otherwise, the second set was marred by long, long, long, long single notes that Trey let fly for what seemed like hours. Even Phil looked like he was getting a bit miffed since Trey would not look at any of the other musicians while he was doing his "I'm gonna cum!" face. I really thought at oe point Phil was going to bonk Trey on the head to pay attention. It almost seemed like he was holding onto the 12th fret for dear life! The Rosemary was cool, but poorly placed in the set and the jam really didn't go anywhere. I'd have to say at least 1/3 of the lawn crowd left.
Of note, the extremely long break in between acts OMFG! I've never seen such a poorly directed change over. Had to be close to an hour 15.
PNC, much better on the change over, less Trey jacking off on the front row. Phil was in fine form, though unfortunately like Camden, Barry was completely removed from the mix once Trey showed up. I was surprised by the 180 GRAB pulled off as well. Their Camden set was a trainwreck, but they turned it around at PNC and I actually found it pretty entertaining.
I really enjoyed China cat - Golden Road - during one jam of GR Larry went for the 65 amphetamine sound and later he did a 90's Dead thing - way cool
Trey didnt work for me.. again. ive seen phils band(s) so many times now i can put JEDI block on mega-low rockstar sit ins. Seriously didnt even mind he was there. If anything it probably made people appreciate just how good Phil's band is. The only thing that bummed me was the lack of Barry that night.
Oh Yeah...and Osby rules!
>>>>Even Phil looked like he was getting a bit miffed since Trey would not look at any of the other musicians
Dude - Phil likes playing with Trey - he releasd a soundboard of his show (2/12/06) and keeps asking him to play -
somebody told me yesterday when trey walked out on stage at camden the first thing he did was knock the telepromter over. I think thats what phil gets a kick out of. Kind of like sporting around a new pair of shoes.
Trey really doesnt play in this band..he plays with it. Which is cool, i guess. I still think Phil's band sounds best when everone is contributing to the whole. Trey tends to focus the bands attention on himself.
Hey the guy is just a SUPERSTAR!
when he plays everyone in phils band watches him. and in a sense i guess that is different, and acceptable. almost unique. boringly unoriginal.
I LIKE THE FIRING 6 CYCLINDER LOCOMOTIVE THAT IS P&F (7 with osby).
>>Dude - Phil likes playing with Trey<<
I know that man. Still doesn't mean he can't get a little pissed when someone isn't paying attention to the band leader. Trey forgets that he is not the leader of Phil's band. And yes, it was unfortunate that Phil released that board, there were far stronger nights on that run that deserved to be out there...most likely he released it because so many people didn't make it due to the snow.
Schmegg....I think you hate Trey so much that it doesn't matter how good he is...you are not going to ike it no matter what....
Kinda like a certain band that I happen to like
Loosen up dude.....The music world is a LOT more than Smurfs
Pop a Pill Bobby!

The band was ON saturday afternoon.
Suck a dick Schmegg.....
Do us all a favor
Open your mind..and shut your mouth man...
Bobby, it ain't worth it. Never was, and won't be.
For my pennies, I think you would have enjoyed it. There was some life in there that I wasn't expecting, and there was some durned good playing up there. Durned good, and stellar at moments. Molo, Barraco and Joan can wing and prayer it any day, but with that many folks onstage, it could have gotten messy, and it did not.
Spliffy, not sure why you think the stage turnover was lame. Trey and Mike ended early, Phil was 6 minutes late. All the scheduled times were posted by us.
>>>Bobby, it ain't worth it. Never was, and won't be.
THANK YOU! i needed that....for some reason that tool always sucks me in
and I need somebody like you to wake me up
Thanks Dew....see ya soon
im kind of at a loss for words right now.
It's about time
ali wouldnt have been ali without frazier
pasted from reviews section in case anyone is curious as to my take:
I was afraid that my ride would kill me if I was the last one to the car, so I apologize for not getting to say goodbye to everyone. but yeah, once I got to the car, of course, I waited for like another 30 mins for our other buddy. go figure :-)
WTF?
If somebody wants to post their opinion of Trey with Phil's band they should be able to do it without been told to "SUCK A DICK".
Creek: You like to flash your kind "hippie" bullshit but when it comes down to it your swinging as much as the next guy dude.
Get over yourself. OPINIONS ARE WHAT MUSIC REVIEWS ARE BASED ON.
If you like Trey cool. Post something about it.
But you weren't even at the damn show.
>> But you weren't even at the damn show. <<
deja vu to a certain stealth show...
