You'll get The Other One w/ LC on fiddle, is my bet. They are due!
Hopefully Barry will pick up the guitar again on this tour. I figure that if the special guests let up, tht will happen.

Wow, that is great. I guess it all depends on the curefew of the venue. I know Greatwoods (the other Tweeter Center) has a curfew of 11.

So, is someone going to give us a 'play by play' from the show???

Definitely think there is a Here Comes Sunshine simmering down below. Also, a Playin' reprise.

I can't believe there isn't anyone here to post up, there ARE too many zoners, deadheads, net setters, phil phish phanatix out there!... I see this happen in quite a few boards when i am sitting here with with cumbersome anxiety to see whats been played when the tour is gettin hot and im obviously not alone!!?. So, is it some sort of net lag technical error or a lag in the presence of us zoners or my own personal connection dilemma? Anyone have answers out there or shall i inquire in a more appropriate board about tech issues? Or should i not be this persistant in checkin in, but that for some reason i just can not believe. No chat accessable on this Mac OSX...stuck in PA after the NJ show last night but havin a wonder ful 4th weekend... SEE Y'ALL Hartford! STAGGER OUT.

No coverage anywhere yet. Nothing on TOO or RD boards. Maybe they don't have cell connection at SPAC, or maybe Phil is dropping major bombs and everyone is too slackjawed to make the call!

I was falling asleep on the long drive home... not a great plan.

corrections make the set list seem right, I didn't take notes...

every set2 song was long.

I got Fiddle!! SOTOTW went fun - but then went on and got wild. I mean wild fiddling just pushed it. Some fiddle to start the peaceful song also (but not whole song). LarryC played 2 other "acoustic instruments" for set2, the 10 string Citern and the 8 string mando (like UJB and UBChain). Didn't see any guitar setup behind Barry's pedal. Osby had a straight "sax" sometimes, besides the alto sax.

headband wore one (at least for set2), molo in white cap. Looked like Joan had on blouse and jeans w/cutoff legs (pedal pushers?).

Lots of set1 singing for Rob!

Peggy-o shared vocals, Phil then LarryC and Joan does the female verse, LarryC again ... later Phil again.

Joan might not have sung too many songs but the way she did Morning Dew was good, then turned into a treat, her fine very nice voice was twisting notes up and around to end that song (I thinkk with duet with Rob).

Mike & Trey (&Duo) were burning it up for the last hour of their set!!! That got hot.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Larry -o (Larryo) on Monday, July 03, 2006 - 02:11 am: Edit Post

Casey Jones might have had some of the special stuff mentioned. it was not cut short, but went on after they did the regular song - I mean the part with everyone together went around and then the fun began, and kept going.

that was some Morning Dew.

But I'd bet maybe he meant the NFA was Special? very slow start, slow build. Trey working it and the others weaving around Phil's lead... NFA always has power stuff, this one did. and also then got jammed out, and again, and in the end it was molo trading off beats with Trey riffs. The others circling around, then phil weaving it home.

the break between Phil's set caught me up way back on the grass- I think they had a curfew to meet so set2 started just before 10:15, perhaps under 30 minute break?

but maybe the "special" was Trey+Mike set ending, seemed like some burnin it up there??

Larryo - glad you made it home safely! I still haven't heard from my friend and I'm thinking that he was in a similar situation as you were with his drive home. I'm waiting to hear from him.

I do think that he meant that the entire show was "special." Thanks for your reviews and comments regarding the music. The show certainly looks good on paper!

My personal show highlights: second-song Sittin' on Top of the World, with a headbandless Rob Barraco belting out the lead vocals, & some great jamming; Larry, Joan & Phil trading vocal turns on Peggy-O, and then a moving Althea to end the first set; a powerful Morning Dew, then Trey joining for the closing Wheel > NFA, & Casey Jones encore. I have to say that, at times, Trey really added substantially to the mix. (Was this the first time on this tour that Trey jammed with PLF?) Was kinda hoping Barry would strap on his guitar during the second set, but it wasn't to be. All in all, a very solid and satisfying show, with lots of intra- and inter-song jamming and exploration. I'm fulPhilled!!!!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Gary (Garyfish) on Monday, July 03, 2006 - 09:10 am: Edit Post

I just answered my own question by looking at the discussion boards: Trey jammed with PLF the night before SPAC (at the PNC Center in Jersey) on a closing Franklin's, then on the GDTRFB encore. Look and ye shall find!

Just woke up after getting home at 3:30AM but it was worth the trip. I love going to SPAC, it is one of my favorite venues. The music was very good with some high's and lows but still very good. The first set was very song oriented with not much jamming. It was very short and only 50 minutes long. Everything was well performed, but the band had a tough time getting on the same page during Peggy-O, which was to bad condisering how well I heard them play it in February. Althea was pretty smoking to close the set and featured some great playing from all, even Osby. This was my first time seeing and hearing this band with Osby and I really have to say that he did not add to much.He sounded like he was struggling at times and like he is trying to figured what key the songs are in for the entire performance of the tune. I really wasn't impressed with him at all. But in his defense he is still getting to know the material and he hasn't spent much time with the band, and I'm sure it will get better as it goes along. The second set was a rocker with some wonderful transitions. New Speedway was excellent as was UJB even though I wasn't nuts about the Larry's mandolin on that tune. He is such a great musician and I love the fact that he can play all those instruments and provide all those colors but it didn't seem to work for me. It should also be noted that the jam out of He's Gone was outrageous! It was great to hear Molo again playing with some fire and leading some jams, I thought he sound great last night. A very well performed version of Unbroken Chain, and that was followed by a wonderful version of Morning Dew. It must be said that Joan kicked ASS last night. Every song was sung as if she had been singing the songs for years. Everytime I see her I am more and more impressed. I really enjoyed her last night. The performance by the band on Morning Dew was really excellent. Great vocal performance complete with closing jam, very nice! For the next two tunes and the encore Trey came out and the band certainly seemed to get a rise out of his energy. Every tune that Trey played on was very well played and full of energy, he really made his presence felt. Casey Jones was also solid and Trey did a nice job on the solo, but all a very good show. Barry played Pedal steel the whole time, and looks like he may being to doing that the whole tour. I really like what that adds to many of songs but it would be nice to hear him play some guitar. But I'm really looking forward to tonight, this really is a great group! See you in Hartford

TOTALLY agreed with your review LAzylightening...and agree wholeheartedly about Joan...HOWEVER...she was definately hoarse during some of the songs as if her voice was a little strained maybe from the night before...and so she was off key during the first few songs in the second set...with Pless grimacing but she sprang back and soared and totally owns those songs...no one owned them as Joan does after Jerry died.

There was thunder and storm clouds in the distance, but it didn't rain on SPAC !

Trey, Mike Gordon et al played first. They were good and played for a long time...
We had lawn seats...then Phil and Friends came on...

1st set was short...Peaceful Valley by Joan was special...By the time Althea came around, I was in that Philzone dancin' away !

During set break, we went over to the Conscious something-or-other food network where they had beautiful posters/ signed original prints by Stanley Owsley and Mouse that you could get for either $20 or ten food items...Very cool...Owsley donates half the sales to that good cause...

Unbroken Chain in the 2nd set was awesome by Phil ! Joan sang us through the Morning Dew with her deep feeling and soul...Into the Wheel that keeps on turnin' and then a Not Fade Away with Trey looking so happy to be playing on stage with Phil and Friends !

Phil Rap - did you know that the guy who saved Phil's life saved a total of 8 lives ?!? That's what Phil said....

Encore of Casey Jones was excellent with Rob on vocals..,As the end of the song approached, Phil led them faster and faster and faster and..,all the while the band was as tight as a knot and Rob's vocals didn't miss a beat ! It was incredible !

A memorable evening ! Thank you Phil !

I just got home from Saratoga after a weekend of camping. It was a good show, but I am holding out for what I might get to see at the Vt show. It was definitly a great show, but I thought the second set was pretty slow. The New Speedway and UJB were great, but from then on it sorta put me to sleep. Trey definitly added to the end to help get things going. The solo from Sless was sick!!! good stuff.

decent first set- dire wolf, althea-- 2nd set had awesome song selection but too much joan moan -- i like it better when she's off the stage and lets the band do what it does best UCB-- then dew - the jam was good-- wheel with trey was kind of weird and jagged and angular not really like the wheel im used too - a little too noisy- but NFA was killer!! they brought that tune to very original new places i was very impressed with that

I have seen several Phil & Friends shows (none with Joan Osbourne and none this tour) and I was extremely excited to see this show. However, I was very disappointed at this show. I could hardly hear Phil's bass and there was no defined lead guitar (apparently Trey filled the void half way through the second set). Upon hearing Joan Osbourne sing almost every song, I almost left half way through the first set but figured i would give the second set a shot. Well, needless to say, by the time "He's Gone" came on, i was gone. Also, except for the "Wake Of The Flood" album and a handful of shows, there hasn't been the need/use for a saxophonist in Grateful Dead music for 40 years, why start now? I can only hope that Trey livened up the second half of the second set, but that's too little too late for me. If i hadn't already bought tickets for Champlain Fairgrounds, i don't think i would be going to another show this tour. I have been tracking setlists for this tour at http://www.setlist.com and they all have a least a 4 out of 5 star review, even the S.P.A.C. show. Are people's standards really that low? I give S.P.A.C. a very generous 2 out of 5. I am hoping that after July 12 i will be stuffing the proverbial Birckenstock in the mouth.

None the less, Thanks Phil for doing what your doing.

Yeah - where I was sitting Phil came through LOUD and CLEAR at SPAC.

Also - not sure what you meant here: >>Upon hearing Joan Osbourne sing almost every song, I almost left half way through the first set<< as Rob did most of the singing in the first half of the First Set (i.e. - SOTOTW and Dire Wolf).

I hope Vermont is real good, too, but I never walk into any venue with any expectations anymore - that way I'm never overly dissapointed no matter what happens. Lucky for me I have seen hundreds of Dead and related Dead shows - so I can use this "no expectations" approach without a problem.

<<well>>

ouch! The jams on either side of He's Gone were, in my humble opinion, some of the highlights. Great stuff.

I really liked the show....but I did notice that my location did matter. Down in the orchestra pit Phil's bass was overwhelming (not Warfield "feedback" type overwhelming, but still wonderful).

Loved the second set. Joan's Morning Dew was great.

Autumn - YEah - Spac was good but never really got "there" - the scene was much different at Meadows - it was the Old Family vibe we know and love right from the Passenger on through the final notes of Mike and Phriends (AKA - Mike and the Italians -sidenote- very funny shirt happening)

I dont think you will be dissapointed at Champlain. In fact - Im sure you won't. So much so - Ill buy your ticket if you feel it was a flop and post so after the show - be honest sos i dont feel ripped off though:-)

>>>>SPAC was another excellent show

It was an excellent show at SPAC but the energy in Hartford from the crowd was much more enthused and the same goes for P+F.

In addition the GRAB set from SPAC which was great was hard edged and driving hte entire time, while at Meadows even though several songs were repeated , everthing was played more fluidly and psychedelically.

One funny thing is - with P+F and half of Phish , not one show on this tour has or will sell out completely, whereas if this were the Jerry GArcia BAnd every show would be pretty much sold out. Its amazing how big one person can become.

Ha Ha Ha, thanks for the offer Evan! I'm from Vermont and I've never seen a bad show of any type here. i'm sure P+F and GRAB will not disappoint. I've been toying with the idea of going to Bethel because i have the day off but i should just sit tight in chill until they play here at home in VT.

"You get what you come for, you're ready to go"...

1st off so glad to see that Phil is looking and sounding so healthy...the gift goes on

great all around time but it was the Uncle John's>Chain>Dew that I'll be remembering for quite some time

some random musings-

I was a bit ticked off at Joan for her delivery during He's Gone. That said, she flowed soul melting goodness at the end of Dew...ahhhh the Dew:::I fealt it and let out a big howl seemingly even before the 1st note. It was seemless, brilliant and bold in the mid-summer night. Given the fact that Barry was on the ps, the ending jam wasn't as striking as the last version I saw at the Tower. It was more of a mingling jam between Barry and Larry..like plumes of smoke drifting up into the horizon...Phil swooping and hammering in from beyond

Phils vocals kicked ass the whole night but especially during He's Gone and UJB

Phil looked down at me playing air bass for the "how does the song go" strum during Uncle Johns. We were pretty close to front and center so it happens *BUT* to feel locked into the band for a line as historic as that was most definitely intense.

Treys perma grin and constant looking up into the upper decks made him look a bit like a cartoon character up there (maybe a beaver) The Wheel wasn't the best choice to bring him out for, mostly a train wreck until what amounted to a pretty cool jam at the end. I did enjoy him being out during Not Fade, he seemed to enjoy watching Sless lay it down on the ps a great deal

Having to venture all the way to a frakin "beer tent" in order to slam beers was a bummer, maybe that's why some folks are talking more energy at Hartford :-O With Jones Beach looming I guess I should be thankful for any beer availability at all.. time to dust off the old flask (that I pretty much only use at Jones Beach)

Like the morning sun you come

and like the wind you go

First time posting but have been checking out the reviews and other discussion posts for a couple weeks now. I'm only 21 and caught my first two Phil shows this tour (my first Dead related shows) so I'm certainly new to the show scene but not to the music. That being said, I just don't understand some of the criticisms certain people have of the shows. I wasn't at this show, but I downloaded it and thought for the most part it was a good show. The first set definitely had some highlights, Direwolf and then Joan rocked Althea. Had I been there I would have enjoyed the Peggy-O just bc its one of my favorites and want to hear it live. But I didn't like Phil singing on it at all. Anyway, second set... Joan is great on New Speedway and don't see how anyone could walk out during He's Gone. I know I'm not seasoned at picking up on all the different elements coming together during a live show, so I can't scrutinize like some people. But then again, I don't see the reason to. Everyone that gets to go to these shows is lucky in my opinion. I never got to see Jerry and thats a hard pill to swallow, but atleast with these shows I feel like I'm getting as close to the Dead experience that I can. All these musicians are so talented and they are playing great music. People need to take it for what it is, not what they want it to be. Also, personally I trust Phil musically then anyone that posts here. Each tour and individual show, he is attempting to assemble the best group of musicians that fit this style to produce great music. When he says Trey was "brilliant" at the Camden show, I wholeheartedly agreed. Trey smoked that show and I'm sure he's carried that through whenever he's gotten the chance to play these next few shows (and I was not a Trey fan by any means before Camden). Basically, I don't understand how anyone can complain about these shows or offer their criticisms. Some can be constructive and I think Phil has listened to those by letting Rob, Larry and Joan sing more while also working on his own vocals. But to say Osby shouldn't be there or this or that, I just don't get it. So if your not satisfied with a show like this, I don't know what your looking for. Whatever it is, I dont think there is enough room for improvement in these shows to please some of the people out there. So I suggest not wasting your time, money and energy going to these shows only to come back on here and rip them apart. Thats all I got.

I feel for you Murry. Had to have been some real vindictive cops to lay those type of charges on you for what should have been a mere citation (considering in its regular form, it wouldnt have even qualified as a misdemeanor). Sorry I can't help out w/ a lawyer in NY but best of luck and fight the good fight. You should be able to get those dropped or reduced at the least.

murray, you definitely need a lawyer. The weight of the brownies does not qualify, only the weight of the pot that is in them. If they did not take the time to separate out the pot's weight, this is a strong argument for your lawyer. it might even be strong enough to get the charges thrown out entirely.

Don't think that is true..remember when congress was debating this very problem some years back (Joe Biden was leading the talks), as they felt that the law was unjust, by weighing the carrier as part of the drug (which of course it is unjust). That is why you never, ever, ever, EVER carry your L*D on a sugar cube, because they weight the carrier as part of the drug.

Now if you get a good attorney (i.e. one that has normal, working relation ship with the DA in Saratoga county you should be able to get it reduced. Look up the county bar association and call them for a referral, they will hook you up with some one. I'll take a quick look at the law in NY and see what it says.

Note the language in the statute. Pretty clear that it includes the buds and the mixtures in the aggregate

Ā§ 221.25 Criminal possession of marihuana in the second degree.
A person is guilty of criminal possession of marihuana in the second degree when he knowingly and unlawfully possesses one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures or substances containing marihuana and the preparations, compounds, mixtures or substances are of an aggregate weight of more than sixteen ounces. Criminal possession of marihuana in the second degree is a class D felony.

Here is my review from Tooboard. If you know me at all, you know I've been having a tough time with the new lineup, but I liked the show. See below.

Let me say from the beginning that this is a positive review. I really liked the show, and I think that this band can create a really powerful sound. It's way different from previous PLF incarnations, and seems much more rhythm section based. I liked it a lot even though I'm all about the lead guitar. the only time i really felt like there was a lead guitar was when Trey hit the stage. Otehrwise it was very much a team effort and no one person shined, except Joan IMHO.

Let the Good Times Roll is always one of my favorite openers, and I like Joan singing on it. It went right into a really nice and strong Siittn' on Top of the World with Larry playing the fiddle. They really got it going near the end of the tune and went into a mini-jam that had kind of a rough transition into Direwolf. The Direwolf was sung decently by Phil (as good as he gets...love ya Phil;)), and jammed out pretty extensively.

Peaceful Valley was the next tune, and it was nicely done by Joan. Every time I hear a RA tune sung by Joan and played by this band it reminds me that his stuff is written well, and other people seem to do a better job with it live. It was used mostly as a transition into the Peggy-O, which Larry sang a lot of. I have a hard time understanding why people think he has a good voice. Either way, the Peggy-O was still beautiful, and I was really happy to hear a smooth transition into an incredibly beautiful Althea wihch closed the set.

Set 2 started after a fairly short break (maybe 20 min?) and went into an awesome New Speedway Boogie. I was really suprised to hear this as the second set opener, and I was also VERY impressed with the version. Joan sings like a f*ckin' angel, and Barry sounded great on the steel.

The Speedway wound down they went into a very nice He's Gone. Another song I can hear every show. Very well done with Barracco on the keys, and again, Joan sang like an angel.

At the end of He's Gone, it got very quiet. Phil raised his hand and the band went into what I've been calling the ? jam. I mean, it was a loud, strong, purposeful jam with complete direction that just slammed right into a nice UJB.

After the UJB there was an Unbroken Chain that was pretty good. I have a tough time hearing this version of the band play this tune sometimes because I just feel like it's just not as strong as it could be. It is very keyboard dominated, and I just feel like Barry or Larry need to step it up a bit. I will say Phil sounded very strong vocally, but it was a pretty short UC. Still good though.

The Morning Dew was my favorite song of the night. It totally showcased Joan, and she was on fire that night. I was just blown away by her singing all night.

Just when I thought the band had totally gelled for the night, Trey came out. Let me say right off that I am a fan of Trey and his playing, but he just did NOT fit in the mix a all in the start of the wheel. He tried to jump right into the mix (and was LOUD in it), and was not in sync with the band until about 3/4ths of the way thru the Wheel. Even then, it seemed like the band was trying to showcase Trey, and the teamwork was kinda gone.

The NFA was really hot. The balcony upstairs actually started to sway with the music for the first time all night. Trey sounded absoultely stellar on it, and it's always a great show closer.

The Casey Jones was a really cool encore to hear...very unusual. I never even heard Trey's guitar the entire song, and you barely knew he was there. It was very weird since he was so incredibly loud during the other 2 songs.

Overall a really good show which I enjoyed quite a bit! Saw dcf and doodahman, and about a zillon of my old tour friends. good times indeed.

Hey, maybe I'm crazy, but I would really prefer just a Phil & Friends tour, rather than this jumble of Zooma rejects and A SHORTER PHIL SHOW!!
I was at SPAC and the first set ended before I realized, what, 6 songs? and the whole show felt so abbreviated for some reason...
maybe I am nuts, any others that would just prefer a Phil Summer tour rather than this?
oh BTW, Joan was awesome, and yes, I do miss the little guy playing GUITAR!!! what the f**?
no guitar on UJB?!?! heeeelllooooo!!!!!!!
seems a little strange to me...
maybe when the other bands leave rthe tour Barry will be allowed back on the guitar, no?
I hope!

I swore Phil sang at least the first verse, but Rob may have finished the tune off? I saw people had said that about Rob, but I stuck with my memory...bad idea?

I've been wrong before, and i know I will be again. Now I have to d/l the show just to see!

;)

Update. I took some good advice and found a lawyer who is friends with the Saratoga DA and has a history of these types of things. I appreciate all support, sympathy and advice. Gonna miss Great Woods because of this, but Vermont shall kick some serious ass. Thanks Again Philzoners!

What a difference a day makes with this line up. If I didnā€™t know better, I would have sworn it was a different band that I saw at PNC Sat. night. Both shows were excellent in their own ways and I loved them both.

Venue: SPACā€¦the scene of many crimes in years gone past. Interestingly enough, this was the second SPAC show I had attended in two weeks. Two weeks ago I caught the Bruce Springsteen Seeger Sessions Band. Nice reintroduction to the place I had visited many times before. In the front of the balcony for this one and I wasnā€™t disappointed with how good the sound was. It would have been a great place to tape from. The only thing I dislike about this venue is not being able to bring food or drink inside. Oh, well.

Shakedown: More gritty than PNCā€¦probably due to the rain showers. Another place with a bunch of bad-police-mojo going down. I saw more busts and hassles than I have in a long time. Too bad. Still, the scene must go on.

Show: I sat out most of the GRAB set this evening, so I canā€™t say much. What I heard was tight. Trey seems quite happy to be playing with this lineup.

Much more mellow vibe from P&F on Sunday. What struck me big time was how much more prominent Osby was. I repeat my comment about the PNC show; maybe Phil should try a jazz/fusion grouping. Very jazzy overtones. A couple of strong songs sung by Joan. Peaceful Valley was stunning. Morning Dew, too. I actually liked the trading verses in Heā€™s Gone...gave it a different feel and that is what I like about P&Fā€¦push the music all over the place and letā€™s not rest on our laurels. I agree with one of the previous posters, The Wheel DID have an angular feel to it. Somehow, cosmically, I feel that wheels should be non-angular and round. Now before I make my next comment, a little history of me. I have been regularly attending concerts for a long time now. I have been in the biz, on the edges and totally outside. Basically, when it comes to concerts, I am so jaded that the Ming Dynasty has me on speed dial. That being said, Unbroken Chain could possibly be the most moving performance I have ever witnessed live. Upon listening to the Instant Live recording, I confirmed to myself that I wasnā€™t just caught up in the momentā€¦and no, I was totally straight as wellā€¦Long Live The Wharf Rats. Dayum!!! The signature changes, the layers, the sax, Phil dropping thermonuclear bombs like the North Koreans are lobbing rockets and everyone totally in syncā€”from start to finish.

I am starting to think that one dayā€¦in the near futureā€¦people will talk about the Grateful Dead as Philā€™s starter band. These guys keep getting better and better and their future is endless.

Woohoo! Canā€™t wait to see what other surprises are in store further up the road.

This past Sunday my brother and I took a short 4 hour drive to the beautiful Saratoga Performing Arts Center to witness some of the most well played music I had seen in a while. We got to the lot around 2 which was actually pretty late figuring the first of three bands went on at 5:00! We had a great spot in the lot. For those of you who have been there, the venue is tucked way deep into the Saratoga Springs State Park. The main lot is pretty small, so they have little mini lots spread out all over the park. My brother Scott and I found ourselves a great little lot with very kind people, a huge wide open field to play frisbee or football in, and a huge shelter that had a fireplace and fully operating bathrooms (yeah you could even drop a deuce without fear of catching ass-rats). We had a great car of guys next to us complete with one of their 8 year old kids which at first I was not very thrilled about. But after hanging for a while, it provided a perfect Grateful Dead family kind of environment, very appropriate. It also made us behave a little better which was good seeing how long the concert was going to be. And how about the show.....

The Benevento Russo Duo played first at 5:00 but we decided to blow them off and pound a couple cheeseburgers and cold beers instead. When we got in there at 5:30 Trey, Mike, and the Duo came on to a huge ovation from the crowd. Having checked the setlists, I knew there would be no Phish material which was kinda sucky. The band clearly led by Trey, mingled through some of Trey's solo work, Mike's solo work, and a few of the Duo's tunes. Other than that they played Get Back (Beatles) and Who Are You (The Who) which was pretty cool to hear. The only problem is that we were getting beers for both of those songs and you have to go to the designated beer garden to get them, AND THEY DON'T LET YOU LEAVE UNTIL YOU DRINK YOUR BEER. You also cannot see the stage at all from there so to drink you have to miss some of the concert which totally blows. Overall the set was good, but not as good as Trey and Mike should be playing. My opinion only. Now let's talk about Phil's set...

Let the Good Times Roll opened the show and made me think of the Downhill From Here DVD from Alpine Valley, a great opener. Joan Osbourne, Phil, and Rob Baracco traded the vocal duties. This led into a nicely executed jam and then right into Sittin On Top Of The World, WOW! A nice unexpected treat for the old Deadheads in the crowd, and old Heads were everywhere. A Dire Wolf followed which literally sounded just like Workingman's Dead. Barry Sless played pedal steel the whole show and on this particular tune he shined nailing all of the Jerry licks note for note. I would have enjoyed this more had I not just seen it at the Shea's show this past winter with John Scofield, but it was still nice. Peaceful Valley followed which I didn't know, but it was a very beautiful song that was perfect to sit down to and relax for a minute. My brother and I have a huge thing for Peggy-O, and that's what came next. We also saw this song performed at Darien Lake two summer's ago but this one was even better. Joan sang all of the girly lines and Phil and Larry Campbell did the guy stuff, very nice. This led right into Althea which unfortunately did not live up to the Shea's version where Scofield's Althea solo made my 44 year old roomate jump up and down like a little school boy, it was still great to hear though as it is one of my favorite Jerry tunes.

Second set.....soooo tired.......sooooo smelly.......soooo tired.......
Luckily I had just enough energy left for one more set. Scott and I were getting a beer when the second set began which means that we couldn't see the stage, but we could hear New Speedway Boogie start up and a very excited crowd ready for it. This led into a nice jam featuring some awesome Phil bombs. The jam trickled it's way into a very sweet He's Gone which made us not only think of Jerry of course, but now of Vince as well. With the segues continuing, He's Gone led right into a very new sounding Uncle John's Band. I say new because John Molo was doing some different rhythms on his drum kit. It still sounded good, but I like to hear the songs the way they are supposed to sound. The same reason why I never liked hearing Mickey rap during Fire On The Mountain. But the jam afterword was tight and right on, and led into my first ever Unbroken Chain. I have been waiting ten years to hear one of these and I finally got it. And boy oh boy was it great. Phil's vocals wer perfect and the instrumental jams in the middle made the place come unglued, literally. It was great to see people around me jumping and freaking out to the music, something that doesn't always happen at post-Jerry shows. But this one did it, and the Morning Dew that followed was one of the most flawless versions in Grateful Dead history. Barry Sless played Jerry's solos perfectly and really made you feel like you were hearing Jerry playing, too sweet. Then I got my wish. Ever since Phil brought Trey and Page on for a few shows in 99', I have been hoping it would happen again and that I would be there to see it. Trey came out and joined the band, and they slowly worked their way into an okay version of The Wheel. I like this song but after two mellow tunes I was ready to rock, but not yet. Trey was flubbing the words a little but you could only tell if you were watching the screens. But this turned into a fierce rendtition of Not Fade Away. A nice song but an even nicer jam vehicle. Trey and Phriends jammed out and gave to audience something to look forward to in the encore. Phil of course came out and gave his donor rap and as usual seemed ultra sincere. Casey Jones was the encore but again, I just saw a version at Shea's so I would have heard something else. However it was well played and Trey and Phil couldn't stop smiling at each other. Overall, a great but very long day. We were inside the venue for 6 hours as the band played until midnight, no joking. A great place to see a show other than the stupid beer rules that don't let you watch the show you payed 60 bucks to see. The two bands I got to see were great, and gave me that feeling I had been craving for months now. Trey Mike and the Duo were a perfect opener, and Phil's band is in my opinion the best thing going right now for hearing Grateful Dead music. I go to every Ratdog, Phil, and Dead show I possibly can as well as playing in my own Dead cover band the Maniacs, www.weplaydead.com So get out and catch a show this tour and get your legs a dancin'.

Peace, Gavin Petrie

Its so great to hear about the show at SPAC.

I saw the Grateful Dead for the first time on June 24, 1984 at SPAC when I was 14 years old. In the following 5 years I saw the GD about 100 times.

I went to the recent Warfield shows which were wonderful.

Thanks to this community for its spirit.

Nice review Gavin & welcome.:-) Glad you enjoyed the show, I thought it rocked as well. Although the sound for Try/Mike was pretty severely distorted in the balcony. Greatly improved for Phil though, thankfully!!!

Yeah that beer garden is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay STUPID!!! Even the Spac employees hate it. $7 bucks for nasty swill only then to be caged. But at least they have considerably relaxed the fascist rules in general that were imposed after Clear Channel took over the venue. Dumbass rules like near-body cavity searches, cops on horses, no strollers, umbrellas, chairs, no water in the pavillion! (until they had people passing out from heat exhaustion) Over the last 3 yrs they have gradually reverted back to a more relaxed friendlier vibe after overall ticket sales greatly declined.

Believe it or not, last year was the FIRST year Spac turned a profit in many years, talk about corrupt mismanagement. There is a new board of directors as of last yr and they truly have seemed to make some good improvements.

(just a little bit of Spac trivia.):-)

Spac is truly a beautiful place & Saratoga Springs is a neat little town. There's actually alot of interesting things to explore in the park and also the town.
