Reasons to go to Bethel:
1) Phil stating that he is looking forward, with great anticipation, to be playing this new venue with world class sound.
2) Various astrological trines and alignments promising an extra dose of cosmic energy.
3) The collective vibe of the original Woodstock nation lingering on the grounds.
4) Tonight's show being released as a free soundboard.
5) Not too hot, not too cool...this day is juuuusttttt riiiiight.
6) P & F closing the show.
7) Will probably have an extra ticket to miracle someone with tonight. An excellent ticket at that.
8) Another Phil show...do I have'ta? :-)
9) Only a 2 hour drive from northern NJ. This is getting easy now.
10) It's a summer tour, damn it!!!!
where is your extra tix--ill pay face if its excellent as you say
Check your e-mail Stealyerface.
And keep in mind that Weir has no show tonight and is going to be in upstate NY tomorrow night.

Born and raised in New York City, Larry Campbell has roots in Woodstock. From Larry's website:
>>>Larry has an open invitation to sit in with Levon Helm at his Rambles in Woodstock, and he does so as his schedule permits.
>>>Larry was also a member of Woodstock Mountains Revue, a unique folk group that featured Artie & Happy Traum, Pat Alger , Jim Rooney, Bill Keith , John Herald and John Sebastian. Guest artists like Maria Muldaur, Rory Block, Eric Andersen, Paul Butterfield and Paul Siebel joined the group for recordings. The Revue recorded 5 classic albums for Rounder Records, and although Rounder allowed over 50 of their tracks to go out-of-print, the band is widely considered one of the premier folk groups of the time.
how cool would it be if this was the setlist:
Touch Of Gray, Little Red Rooster, Lazy River Road, When I Paint My Masterpiece*, Childhood's End, Cumberland Blues, Promised Land Shakedown Street, Samson & Delilah, So Many Roads, Samba In The Rain, Corrina, Drums, Space, Unbroken Chain, Sugar Magnolia
E: Black Muddy River, Box Of Rain
Check the ticket board. I have a great extra now.
I'm lookin for Terrapin, Cosmic Charlie and Cumberland tonight. Hopin' for a Box of Rain--it's my wife's fav song and she's never heard it at a show.
See ya all there. I've been lookin forward to this show for a LONG time!

How fortunate are we that such great music is still being performed so well almost 37 years after Woodstock? It's sad to think that we're closer to the end of the trip now than the beginning, but such is life. As long as the trip continues I will continue to be ever so grateful. In the preceeding decades, the Grateful Dead were the finest flowering of American art and culture. Now, Phil is keeping the music alive in a vibrant and exciting way. What a treasure it is to still be able to see this music live. Thank you Phil!
wow that whole setlist looks like really great fun songs tonight!
Hope the full moon Dark Star was spacy?
(but not sure what joan could sing - mama tried, maybe Lovelight?)
Wow!!! Cool for the folks who were there tonight: you must have had *goosebumps* when you realized what they were doing! (Hell, I got goosebumps while reading this thread!) Awesome.
Can't wait to hear this...and thank you for keeping the music going as wonderfully as you do, Phil!!
Bethel Woods is a real nice venue, and the band was cookin' tonight. Great vibes were had by all. What a good time!
Was it really a triple encore.?.
If so..Touch opened 7-09-95 and Box closed it
hah! awesome.

Did Sless play even in the first set?
>>>Did Sless play even in the first set???
I thought he was on fire.
was sless there? no credit on setlist page
No diss to Sless. I wasn't at the show and he wasn't listed on the set list or above.
Barry Sless played the whole first set and certainly held his own. Even though Barry was nowhere to be seen for the rest of the show, Phil included him in the band intros.
>>Hopin' for a Box of Rain--it's my wife's fav song and she's never heard it at a show.
congrats!
>>>Did Sless play even in the first set???
I thought it was the best (and clearest) Ive heard sless yet this tour, not that the 2nd set wasnt magical, but the first set was waaayyyyyy smoking too! I believe the shakedown>cumberland was in the vicinity of 30 minutes all told.!
what a beautiful place!!!
First set was great. no complaints, Candyman was great.
Second set was a trainwreck. OK I said it. The band looked and played like they were worn out. Miscues in every song. Trey does not belong on stage with the band. It seems like he doesn't know what the band is doing, the band doesn't seem to know what he is doing, and everyone tries to get out of his way, leaving a big confusion. Pretty weak overall.
God bless Phil. He tried to pull this one out of the fire several times, but everytime they were almost back on track something else went wrong. Even my hero Larry seemed to be pressing.
Worst show I have ever seen by Phil and Friends. Except for MAYBE red rocks with RA. In spite of that, or maybe because of that, the Old Man's presence was palpable. You could just feel Jerry.
So after three shows, I give Boca Raton a solid "A". Camden gets a "B". Bethel gets a "C-" Bring back the Scofield lineup.
Bookends
Time it was and what a time it was it was,
A time of innocence a time of confidences.
Long ago it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you
Bethel, NY. Birthplace of the Woodstock nation. It is said that whenever a door closes another must open in order to keep the balance among all things. Remember the past—the good, the bad, the indifferent—and let it guide you to a fruitful future.
Framed by simultaneous wake and birth…bookends, one can say…I am lucky enough to say, “Yeah, I was at the 07-10-2006 Phil Lesh and Friends show…”
“…And, what a show it was”
Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart. You just gotta poke around:
I don’t know about all of you, but somehow the Shakedown seems forced to me some days. People fighting over who gets to park where, you stole my idea, etc. The Bethel shakedown brought me some hope. Without really looking, I was able to find 3 different “streets” spread out among the parking lots. Sometimes the journey is more fun than the destination…at least it was for me. Each one had its own mini-vibe as well. It gave me hope for the future of the scene…one that has gotten a bit long in the tooth for this guy.
If your mem'ry serves you well, we were goin' to meet again and wait:
Obviously, the wait that Bethel, NY had to endure for Phil to return to the site of the original Woodstock festival was well spent. What a wonderful venue to see a show at. It just became my favorite outdoor facility to see a show at…sorry, Red Rocks there’s someone new. From the moment I heard of this facility, I wanted to see a show there. The parking was ample and well run. The grounds added a nature vibe to everything. The grounds of the venue, inside the gate were breathtaking. Huge amounts of green space that allowed anyone to go off and commune with whatever needed to be communed with. Of course, everything still had the “new shed” feel to it. The seats had real cushions on them…not just the sponsor seats. If Phil was still “Searching For The Sound” he found it last night. Hands down, the best outdoor concert sound that I have ever heard anywhere.
Anybody's choice. I can hear your voice. Wo-oah what I want to know, how does the song go?:
Ah, yes…the show itself. Last evenings GRAB set was solid although not as stellar as the other show that I have seen this tour. I must admit the cover of Paul McCartney’s Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey was rather inspired in a silly song sort of way. I never thought I would see the day that someone would try to pull that one off. Pretty damn cool choice: well done and well received.
Phil, Phil, Phil…why do you keep doing this to me? Your band and you keep getting better and better. Don’t you know that I have responsibilities and can’t always get to the next show? Still, if that is the worst that you are going to treat this fan….carry on.
The first set was smokin’. Much like the recent PNC set, they came out firing on all cylinders and ready to rock. Very pretty Candyman. I found myself wishing the Mike Gordon was playing banjo on Cumberland again, if only because it really added another bright texture to an inspired arrangement…it still rocked. Great Rider...a very powerful and energetic way to prepare us for what was in store later.
The second set was special…very special. Kudos to Phil for bring back the original GD set from Woodstock and then adding a homage to the final GD show for extra measure. UJB still had the mandolin from the SPAC arrangement with the bonus of Trey’s guitar. I believe someone mention in the SPAC review that UJB needed guitar…I guess Phil thought so to. St. Stephen never sounded more rockin’, more crunchy, more more than it did last night. My new favorite version. I remember loving Mama Tried but wondering about the placement…I learned later why it was where it was. Cosmic Dark Star with trading verses and inspired playing. Sure, Joan flubbed the beginning to High Times but so did Jerry the first time...this ain’t brain surgery, folks. It’s all about taking chances. The last few Lovelights I have seen have been missing something. Whatever that something is, returned last night. Talk about me having happy feet.
The encores were touching. Not only was He’s Gone an apt tribute to Jerry, I think it was an editorial of sorts on the new Rhino deal as well. Those days are gone and nothing’s gonna bring them back. So, move forward and upward because the future is bountiful. Touch didn’t wow me, still solid though. Box has always been my fave, even with a sketchy vocal job by Phil. I swear his voice is getting stronger and stronger. Sweet ending. Sweet venue, Sweet scene.
Where to next?
Going where the wind don't blow so strange
Maybe on some high cold mountain range
Were you guys at the same show?
>>> Were you guys at the same show?
One man gathers what another man spills.
P.S. Nice recreation of the, as Phil wrote in his book, "saber-toothed croch cricket of a hum" at the end of Lovelight. Always pay attention to the details. ;-)
steve seems to be in the minority...all reports i hear are that this is the best P&F's so far
Sounds like Tony got the fatty egg rolls and Steve went for the "kind" veggie burrito!
>>>>Trey does not belong on stage with the band. It seems like he doesn't know what the band is doing, the band doesn't seem to know what he is doing, and everyone tries to get out of his way, leaving a big confusion. Pretty weak overall.<<<<
didnt see bethel but that has been pretty much my take on the ones i did see.
Anyone who says Trey "doesn't look like he knows what he is doing" is clearly out to lunch. Trey has made this run so special and he sparks this band and brings a ton of energy. Last night was the best show I have seen so far this tour, then again I have not seen all of them. It was phenomenal!!!! Beautiful Location too. Gorgeous. The venue wenton forever. If I had a tent with me in the show I could easily hike inot the woodsa or out to any number of big patures. There were really no fences or boundry lines. Cool scene. Trey alos played ohenomenally well during his set. Trey and Mikes set was fantastic. Some of the best I have svene from him all tour too. It really looked like Trey and Mike back in 92-93 with new energy and new tunes. I dug the sound big time. Great time! Until I had to drive home three hours after the show..
Thanks for the great review Tony!!
This tour has been nothing less than magical throughout and this show sounds like the most magical of the bunch!!!
I thought Trey was great, a fresh take on the repertoire. I've never seen him except at the Beacon and Jones Beach, and I really dig his vibe.
He lays back when he's not sure, let's it rip when he's ready.
As for Barry not being seen during the second set, I saw him. He sat right behind the sound board and seemed to be digging it. He's a class act, Phil pays the bills, Barry follows orders.
Barry was great in the first set, Cumberland was really spicy. Larry of course really rips that ones with the finger picking.
It was an awesome show ...
"it's all a dream we dre-ee-amed one afternoon long ago"
RIP to the Fat Man.
>>He lays back when he's not sure, let's it rip when he's ready. <<
Come on, it is one thing to love Trey, but to come on here an lie to defend him...come on!
He steps on eveyone when he doesn't know what to do, leans back and holds a note with his "I'm gonna...uh" face all the while Larry is there knowing where this should go but he is just stomped on my Trey and the terrible soundman Phil is luggin around this tour.

Nice review, Tony --
Definitely a beautiful beautiful show! The kind that sort of turns the space inside out and for a few moments (or that long lingering day after) you go - "wow, life is stunning! Right, good reminder!" The playing was full of light and really awake!
Thank you, Phil and all the band! Joan, you rock! My wife sends her deep regards--
And the tribute to Jerry still gives me a lump in my throat and brings those sweet tears...

although I think the home page just came back on line....
i'm glad trey came out and smoked. i just wished he would have made an appearance at darien lake, he would have brought it up a notch. Phil wouldn't of had to play lead guitar all night. Larry belongs with Dylan or some straight rock band, but can't even dream about playing as good as trey or even scofield for that matter. i don't mean to complain, but i never questioned the quintet because Herring and Haynes rocked, Sless and Campbell just don't have the zest. some of their jams go nowhere, like that unbroken at darien. phil sang it perfect and during the part with the rippin' jerry solo, everything went flat. I saw Trey haters at Darien and they pissed me off. if you're gonna hate trey, stay outside until phil comes on, don't ruing the GRAB set for the many people who are digging it, no wonder phil is leary letting him play too much. trey may have some solo cheese that he's going through, but so has bob weir. Trey Anastasio is one of the best guitarists out there in the music business. He's not jerry, no, no one will every compare to the late great jerry garcia, they are non comparible. phil's got two guitar players and neither one of them rarely sings and they are not that great. sorry phil that i feel this way, i just think that you could let others be in your band that know how to play a better lead then larry campbell, so you don't have to do all the work yourself. Sless rocked and was wrong when i previously said they should have Trey and Larry, they should have Trey and Sless instead. Give Larry back to Dylan. He may be a great guy, but just doesn't fit. Sorry, this is just my opinion. Peace.
I was at the same show as Steve. Probably the most subpar Phil show I can recall.
First set was fine. Felt very short (Trey & Mike played way tooo long for my taste) and didn't really click with me. Second set had its momements (UJB, St Stephen) but there were many fuckups - seemed mainly to be vocals/lyrics flubs from my vantage point. Phil's voice was much weaker than I've heard in a long time, and you could practially watch Trey's eyeballs move as he read the lyrics for Touch of Grey - no feeling at all on that song. I'm not trashing Trey for trashing-treys-sake. In fact, I thought for the most part he gave a boost to the second set energy wise. But the x-factor just wasn't there. (I'd add that loads of people on the lawn left well before the show was over)
That said, I'm still glad I went. Bethel is FUCKING AMAZING. Best venue in the northeast. Great LOUD sound. Huge lawn. You can wander around in these massive open fields during the show, incredible vistas of rolling hills for miles around. It's beautifully designed. The people who worked there were super helpful and friendly. It's a special place. I'm looking forward to seeing many many more shows there.
first set was good, shakedown, cumberland, rider-- second set started off good, ujb, st steven, mama tried-- well they tried that one at least-- again major fuck ups from joan- the way she sang high time was like she had heard it for the first time yesterday-- i noticed when she normally sings she does her sexy stage behavior and whatnot-- but when it comes to a point where its inappropriate - such as a song like high time or stella from friday- she cracks up and its very plain to see she really has no knowledge of the depth of the material or the music-- furthermore the lovelight was an attempt to recover from high time- which should have been HUGE bust-out-- but didnt really succeed. he's gone>touch with trey was pretty weak, with phil trying to redeem it with box which is always sweet
Wow, so many different reviews. I already posted mine, but felt a need to jump back on here. Boy, some people really know how to take a great thing and squash it. So many unforgiving critics out there. Phil is 66 years old and has been playing 4 nights in a row. If he goofs or if someone else does, then who really cares. I don't. I am just gald these sort of concerts can exist. I am so happy for younger generations that they can take in this experience. I saw people who weren't even born when I saw Trey or Jerry for the first time. To remind all of you, Jerry and the GD in general, were famous for screw ups, equipment failures and what not. Especially, at Woodstock which made last nights occassional mishaps quite fitting. Cut 'em some slack folks....Put it this way, if you like this type of music then you better appreciate what there is because I have news for you: this is all there is. This scene or music doesn't grow on trees. If you like this music and these songs, then just be thankful its still around. Complaining about it or wishing it was different doesn't help too much. Last night was the best show I have seen in a long time and Trey is phenomenal. Trey and Mike together were out of this world. Trust me folks, I have quite a particular ear and can tell you that last night was record setting phenomenal jamming. It will be a let down and an adjustment to get used to Trey not playing with Phil and Friends. He helped make these shows really really tight and energized. God Bless!
go away little phishies......good riddance.
A couple things to add... there was an opening jam before Shakedown Street. There was a huge Mind Left Body jam between both verses of Dark Star. I don't know how no one has mentioned that so far. Also, heard a nice Other One tease in there as well...
Uncle John's Band was incredible. Had a real nice buildup jam in the begining. Definately one of the highlights of the show. Trey was spitting fire towards the end of it and Phil following his lead. Maybe the other way around, but it was some moving shit. A must listen. The whole second set was really great. Powerful shit. St. Stephen was rocking real hard. Adding Trey to the mix is a great thing, I think it turns up the energy a notch. I hope he continues to do so.
The three song encore was a surprise. Definately meaningful to my buddy Jeremy, who took me to the show. His father passed away recently so, that was a nice tribute for him. He was indeed there in spirit. Bethel is an amazing place, gorgeous scenery and a great historical significance to it. Definately had a great vibe. This was one of my favorite shows from Phil, if not my favorite. But, it's kinda hard to beat me first show! See you in VT!
Also, since Jeremy knows Joe Russo, we got some backstage passes. Hung out with the duo for a bit, then had a nice little chat with John Molo. Great guy. Jeremy and I are drummers, so we had something good to chat about. A very memorable night for sure. Thank you Phil.
This is all very cool to hear... Wish I could have made it. Phil covers & recovers the original Woodstock set, plus a nice triple encore tribute to ol' Jer. Can't wait for the kind Board from Phil...
Hey Trev,
Larry Campbell is one of the best guitarists (multi instrumentalists) IN THE WORLD. You need to LISTEN to the difference between tasteful group playing,(Larry +Sless) and show off jam band wankola.(Trey) By the way the GD were first and foremost a rock and blues band, Larry fits in just fine. Jerry and Larry are completely different as players, but they come from the same school of music.
flibs and flubs aside last nights show was the bomb. I saw many a dead show post Brent that didnt hold a candle to last night. Complete bachannalian dancefest. It was the vibe that made it right. IF this was my first dead experience I would be hooked for sure.
Second set train wrecks?? Whatever!! Blah blah blah - If I want to see flawless composition Ill see the symphony - what I saw and heard last night was honest improvisational - risk taking - give and take musically - far from perfect but SERVING UP THE VIBE big time. Grateful Deadland alive and well.
If that show didnt get you back on the bus I guess I wont see you in Vermont. Just sorry I cant make Scranton tonight.
tomorrow night, no?
pretty sure I passed the tour buses on the way home last night, gave them the doppler effect car horn while pumping my fist out the window...hope I didn't disturb Phil's beauty sleep : )
yeah, Larry and Barry are pretty much average players...sure LOL
Yeah tommorrow, you are correct - its all rolling into one since SPAC. Of the four shows I saw its tough to make comparisons. The vibe at BEthel was overwhelming - I think Meadows was a fiery show,SPAC and JOANS Beach not too shabby either. No complaints here. VT. gonna wind it up for me - personally ID love to see a Phish reunion - but it aint gonna happen (unless it does) more likely Paige will come out for a tune or two- if that.
So I seriously hope I get proven wrong here.
Aint got time,to call your, soul a critic ,no
Reposting from Other Stuff;
Wow~ Where did the day go today?? Recovery..
I almost don't have the words to adequetely describe this venue, this show, this remarkable weekend.
The segue from Jones Beach to yesterday was one of delirium and smiles. Didn't think I could have a better show than the Jones Beach show, since i had a once in a lifetime seat, thru mail order at Jones; first row, next to some of my favorite folks to see a show with; SI, Dr Killpatient and Gmack. THAT review hasn't even been written by me yet..
But BETHEL, Bethel is a whole 'nother world entirely. Only Red Rocks comes close.
Our adventure:
Kindmomma Kate made a game night decision to meet J and I in NY from Philly, and we left around 11:30 for Bethel. My great friend Jeanne pulled in with us too.
Didja notice how half the people call it BethEL, and half call it BETHel? So, we decided it should be BethEL, since it reminded me of Temple BethEL's everywhere, being a hotbed of chasidic Jews up in the Monticello, NY summer bungalow colonies. We passed all sorts of Chasid's on the way.
From the moment we drove onto Hurd Rd to the parking areas, we were struck by the beauty of the land, the rolling hills, the lack of industry, commercialization. Passed the gorgeous venue building and our excitement built!
Anyway, we outwitted ourselves by getting their a little toooo early, hoping to avoid the single-point-of-entry lines in. The lots didn't open that early, and when they really opened, it was the furthest corner from the venue you couldve been! The positive part is that we were situated in the first shakedown lot, so lots of supplies were right there, and leant a nice vibe to the area.
Set up the pop-up sun shelter (thanks, JIA!) and refreshments. I went off to vend some jewelry, and was struck by the mellow vibe- first of all, you're on grass, not dirt or yucky concrete parking lots. There was virtually no security around there, no one policing open containers or smoking. Some guys even offered my friend Jeannie the beautiful and I a few puffs as we walked by selling, "just to make the trip more enjoyable" as we were vending!
Ran into Jughead for a second, and then the other zoners made themselves known, although we were all dispersed throughout different lot sections. Cell phones are sketchy reception-wise in the lots, so it wasn't easy.
Eventually, we were able to gather up the following wonderful mofos:
Dmamma and Ken, Kate, Jill and her whole family (such incredibly beautiful children) Leda, Molly, Noelle, DB, JOJO, Peglet, Rik L, Gmack, Cameron and Jen (first time meeting these smiley cute zoners~ so nice to meet you!)Dmamma and Ken, Kate, Jill and her whole family (such incredibly beautiful children) Leda, Molly, Noelle, Mike Doubleyah, DB, JOJO, Peglet, Rik L, Gmack, Cameron and Jen (first time meeting these smiley cute zoners~ so nice to meet you!), Dancedude and company,(and said hello to Coyotte with Adam G.) I apologize to whomever I forgot- I'm brain dead right 'bout now.
After a great hang session getting schwilly by one of the cars with the whole crowd, the sun started setting over the treeline, flaming orange and then neon pinky gold, and many of us walked to the venue and went in around 8:00.
There were some state troopers lined up near the entrance eyeballing some of the obvious looking stuff that was going on. One of our friends was asked by the entrance ticket security to kindly bring his weed back to the car!
So in we went, no line to speak of, and were simply blown away by the site below us, in the natural bowl of the land. The "shed" was HUGE and gorgeous, and the lawn was all rolling hills- the best part was over on the left of the lawn were a zillion strategically placed small boulders where people could perch and hang and watch and listen. They looked rather flinstoney all illuminated, sort of like a miniture golf course and they were very romantic and fun.
After determining where Jill and family were parking themselves on the lawn, me and J and Kate (thanks to PeggyO) found our seats in the pavillion in lower section 1, which was really close to the stage. The seats were actually cushy and comfortable, and my legs barely touched the floor there was so much room. The rows were far apart, so you could dance and turn in the rows without crashing into anyone!
When Phil and Friends came out, and blasted open with Shakedown, and the sound was crystal clear and LOUD LOUD LOUD, with no distortion, we grinned and cheered. It only got better. There was no cupping of my ears at this show, let me tell you.
More soon. Gots to do some stuff.
"the terrible soundman Phil is luggin around this tour."
Dennis Leonard is Phil and Friends sound engineer.I believe he mixed all three bands on this tour.As for being a terrible sound engineer nothing could be further from the truth.
If you go to imdb and put in dennis's name you will see an amazing resume which does not include all the awards he has been nominated for and received.(including oscars for sound editing for shrek 2)
I have been working in the live sound industry for close to 10 years. I am lucky enough to work with some of the huge stars we all love.I toured with phil in fall of 2003,working directly with dennis. He is without a doubt the best sound engineer I have ever heard. He is very technically oriented yet he has a grassroots approach to audio. He has some of the best ears in the biz.
Also he was the recording engineer for Europe 72
So if you have bad sound I don't think you can blame Mr.Leonard
"If so..Touch opened 7-09-95 and Box closed it"
How cool is that??
And sound-dude,
"..including oscars for sound editing for shrek 2" The sound WAS awesome in that!
>>He steps on eveyone when he doesn't know what to do, leans back and holds a note with his "I'm gonna...uh" face all the while Larry is there knowing where this should go but he is just stomped on my Trey and the terrible soundman Phil is luggin around this tour.>>
Well said. LOL.
>>Trey has made this run so special and he sparks this band and brings a ton of energy.>>
Excuse the sarcasm, but... Wow, he can do all of that without signing or really taking any solos to speak of. Impressive.
<snip>Didja notice how half the people call it BethEL, and half call it BETHel? :-) So, we decided it should be BethEL, since it reminded me of Temple BethEL's everywhere, being a hotbed of chasidic Jews up in the Monticello, NY summer bungalow colonies.<snip>
It's BETHel. I used to live up there. Wish I could have been at last night's show!
Shakedown Street ->
Cumberland Blues
This Wheel's On Fire
Candyman
I Know You Rider
This was a great way to start the show, with an acoustic bang; a reminder of sorts of the timelessness of shakedown, played through huge stacks of speakers which were very loud, but not distorted or hurtful, and balanced, so you could hear each distinct instrument and voice. No ear cupping necessary.
Cumberland felt spirited and high energy, kinda old timey, and from another planet entirely, after the sometimes sultry shakedown street. Larry Campbell was burning through this one.
Wheels on Fire, all Larry ala Dylan and Danko, I think. Real good. Candyman and Rider, sweet and then bitter sweet..
Second set is where it just got crazy. It was an emotional time.. brought me from joy to tears a few times. The way that you can get something different from one of the songs every single time you listen to it, based on the place in your life at the time, is what makes it all work for me.
The whole thing, down to what a steal your face moment it was when High Time started- and so on and so forth.. every single tune was laden with emotion and played beautifully. Not that there weren't mistakes, but it didn't even matter. Such a great vibe.
And i dug Trey!! I didn't feel he overwhelmed the band, and it felt more balanced. I could appreciate how good he is and enjoy him because he was part of the band instead of "guest star".
This was a great relief, because I was NOT digging Trey with Phil at all.
Anyway, i'm blathering here.
I had a great time. Wish you all could have been there too, for real. Many were missed.
"being a hotbed of chasidic Jews up in the Monticello, NY summer bungalow colonies. We passed all sorts of Chasid's on the way"
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who noticed that. Those people are, well, um, interesting.
this being my first dead show. and my first concert.
i was just blown away. but people, dont me wrong. im
a real deadhead. i have close to 40 of the grateful dead's albums. a phil lesh album. two jerry garcia. and i know a lot of their songs. i was writing down on my phone the set names and tracks. and i even knew when they songs sequenced! i have been following the reviews on this site. and i was so pumped for this show. the band is so tight and amazing. phil lesh being the only first dead bandy there, really was impressive. joan osbourne hearing for the first time. she was just amazing. she made shakedown street and candyman (personally by my own opinion) BETTER. like WAY BETTER. john molo is a beastly drummer. larry campbell is a great rhythm guitarist. trey anastasio was my favorite part of the night along with joan osbourne. because he reminded me a tad of jerry. he had this dopey smile. and he sung a bit like him. and he was the lead guitarist. he really brought some insight to this band and i really hope he sticks with this band. i loved my first live dead experience. and im willing to do it again sometime soon. and ive been listening to the instant live cd
best bumper sticker of tour
" I'm driving away from Trey"
They should of put " as fast as I can"
glad you had a good show there, jonah, now get yourself to radio city on thurs or friday and check out bobby if you want to see another first dead bandy (the only one in his band, as well)
haha that will be awesome to go on thursday/friday. but i dont drive. hahaha. and im not too fond of weir and ratdog. i love weir. but im not too fond of him. sorry man. love to. but cant and dont feel like it.
25 years in the scene -
Trey plays well - He is a wave rider not a swell maker.>Plays ontop of whatever yr doin... It worked Sundaze for sure. The set he did w/ gordon and crew was really interesting.. Beatles/who cover made me smile and sing along..
Phil sets were beautiful.>Candyman-shakedown dacin - the beer was cold...Hands down one of the funner nites I have had in awhile..
All star (Phriend) of the night Barry !! That cumberland is a fuckn monster.>It is all I listened to yesterday.. What a version !! Molo is the bomb diggity.. Just a great performance even thru all the rough spots.. I play out alot and have for years.>Even during the breakdowns-lyrics missed and fubbed, bad chord changes they muddled thru.>It is all about recovery time that shows how well seasoned folks are.. I did not mind the screw up!! What intensity the band played with !! It was really a pleasure to be there..I cried tears of rememberance..I shook my 40 year ole ass and praised what a beautiful crazed lot we are..
I am reaffirmed... I bear witness to the new local New Yawk venue..I like that place..
Neagtive stuff - To many folks there only interested in making money..Not there for the show at all..Selln their wares which is fine - but way to blatent.. A friend of mine just got out after 14 yrs in for a few stamps etc.. Nj..What a state.. Anyway - If our scene grows again it is up all of us to get these fuggers out.. I remember the late 80's..Yikes..There were alot of cameras snappn photos there.. Shutterbug law enforcement..
Bring yr own folks - THERE IS SOME TROUBLEUNDERFOOT...
Will do a music review later at home.>Too many eyes at work
Overall, I still feel giddy..
Such beauty in the face of great odds
I am going to see bobby friday...Just to send him some love
Blessingz to all
Jonah: better late than never, welcome on the bus!
Now, put those albums lovingly ASIDE for a bit and go get lots of live Dead! Buy it, download it, do what you must. Because if you think their albums are stellar, the unbelievably vast collection of live shows out there will blow your proverbial mind...
>>>>> Boy, some people really know how to take a great thing and squash it. So many unforgiving critics out there. Phil is 66 years old and has been playing 4 nights in a row. If he goofs or if someone else does, then who really cares.
"who really cares"? Uh, dude, this is a review thread. It's where you put your opinions of shows.
I'm glad other folks had a great show - especially you, Jonah. We're all so very, very lucky that Phil is around and making the music that feeds our soul.
Some nights are just better than others, that's just the way it is. I ain't complaining. The two shows I hit in Feb were mind boggling experiences for me - and not every night i going to be that way. And that's perfectly fine by me, cause when those peaks are hit, they're so fucking high you're never the same again
"haha that will be awesome to go on thursday/friday. but i dont drive. hahaha. and im not too fond of weir and ratdog. i love weir. but im not too fond of him. sorry man. love to. but cant and dont feel like it."
ah, well, if you don't have a car, that's one thing, but if I understand you correctly (lots of contradictory statements), you've only been to 1 dead concert, and maybe even that was your first concert ever? if so, I wouldn't be so quick to pass up whatever shows you can see...because you can't have an opinion if you haven't experienced it yourself
OK -- The show in Bethel was great -- with some minor let downs.
Firstly, great venue. That place had great sound, great screens and decent staff. No complaints here.
Trey and Mike sounded really great, they truely stepped it up a notch and followed through. Bravo!
The first set of Phil, although late getting started, was stellar. I thought that after seeing this line-up for the second time, it's in some ways the best line-up Phil has had (this is coming from an insatiable Warren fan folks). Sless and Campbell are absolutely amazing. I thought Sless' playing was outstanding - that guy has an amazing ear. Campbell is in a league of his own - That guy definately can play his heart out. Joan always sounds great and Bethel was no exception. They came out of the gate blazing with Shakedown and that set the tone for the rest of the night. Molo, Barraco and Phil were in this unbreakable bubble together. They were so on that I dont think you could shut them off.
The second set was great also but, yes there is a but, Trey didnt have his act together. He blew me away in his own set, but when he got together with Phil I felt like he was listening as much as he needed to be. I noticed him make several big mistakes throughout the set, but forgave him since he was so darn good when he played earlier in the night.
I really enjoyed the choice of songs and the fans get kudos for being so high energy.
If I had to criticize anything, it would be that some of the venders, at least most that I encountered in the Parking Lot were there for reasons other than the music, and to me folks - that is lame. Sell your food and your crystals, sell your tees and your pipes, but for heaven's sake, be there for the music as well.
Final thought: Phil is and always will be the man who carries the torch. Love you Phil!
Go home you trey hatters. If u opened your eyes at any of these shows you would see that phil is having a blast up there with trey and is amazed by his amazing guitar solos. I like larry and barry but they are nowhere near trey when it comes to improvising. I also saw somweone say that TREY HAS NOT HAD ONE GOOD SOLO THIS WHOLE TOUR. Uhhh Scarlet>fire at jones beach....bertha at hartford.
He is the only frekin guy who will copy garcia riff during a song. I think everytime trey has come on stage he has raised the energy level at least 75%. And thats a fact becasue i went to 5 of these shows and everytime trey came out the place went nuts. Been playing music for 11 years and have been a deadhead for 15 years now, and i have not been this excited about music since phish in 1997. Thanks phil and thank you trey for finally doing this and jamming together. You have made my year.

>>>>Go home you trey hatters
yeah - you trey hatters - go home!!!! you and your trey hats make me sick!
>>>He is the only frekin guy who will copy garcia riff during a song.
Huh????
I prefer Phil hats...lol
but still glad you are excited nevertheless
>>>>>Looks fun on paper.
....pretty good on liquid too!!!
....To Trey or not to Trey, that is the question....I'm more of a mad hatter than a Tray hatter myself.....maybe I'm just olde school but my personal feeling and that of the person I was with at Bethel was that Tray seemed to suck the energy out of the 2nd set...he was perfect with Mike and Benevento/Russo during their sets with his flashy whamjam style of loudness...but play me a melody?!?!?...as the Chassids in BethEL say...OY VEY!!!....thats futkakta....
>>>I like larry and barry but they are nowhere near trey when it comes to improvising.
.....now IMO that's blasphemy...perhaps you should check out 12-10-05 House of Blues show in Atlantic City as just one example...Sless and Campbell serve up a full course dinner platter compared to a lunch trey....Tray cranking the volume from 8 to 10 is not what one would call improvising....
....Trey hates me but I really don't care...I have nothing against him doing his own thing and I respect that many people dig his scene, even when he's with Phil...it just doesn't do much for me or add anything extra that I care to hear when he plays with Phil and Friends...this is just my opinion, not a "You're wrong and I'm right statement"....
>>>trey has come on stage he has raised the energy level at least 75%. And thats a fact becasue i went to 5 of these shows and everytime trey came out the place went nuts.
.....that squirrels collect nuts is a fact...the above statement is a personal opinion...
....great beautiful new venue...now that can almost be taken as fact....
<<<.....that squirrels collect nuts is a fact...the above statement is a personal opinion...
Besides I think the energy level was only raised 7% but hey, that's just me.
I do not hate Trey (nor hat him) but I prefer my Phil with Trey on the side, in much smaller doses.
....Trojan makes Trey hats don't they?....
>>>Trey hates me but I really don't care
Really - I doubt Trey even knows you.
...spoken like a newbie...welcome to the bored...now Leaf me alone you doubting Thomas...
Doubting Thomas? Newbie - Ive been on this board since it started and probably at as many shows as you. But regardless -
>>>"Trey hates me...."
I don't doubt that YOU may hate Trey or that youve seen 100's of Dead shows and Phish shows -just like me.
But why would Trey hate YOU? If you know him personally and he really does hate you - well - thats your business - but I seriously doubt Trey spends a lot of time hating anyone these days - he seems sorta busy - thats all.
....jeeeez can't ya take a joke Leaf?....or just a bit of sarcasm?...Trey seems to be a very sensitive subject to many and it's like a personal attack if anyone says even the slightest negative thing about him....
....I don't hate Trey, don't know much about him actually...saw 1/2 of one Phish show years ago at Darien then left early because it was torrential pouring rain and my ride wanted to go...got shut out in the Coventry fiasco and then finally got to see him live at Bethel as the first band then with Phil...he just didn't do anything for me musically or spiritually with his muse....the Dead and the various Phil & Friends (sans Trey) concepts I have seen and enjoyed immensely...Ratdog has been hit or miss for me...but that's just my personal tastes and experiences weighing in....you can like Trey all you want or hate him if you so desire...
....you're being too literal interpreting my post Leaf....the phrase "Trey hates me" just strikes me as funny when I hear people say it so I typed it as it popped into my head...."Trey likes blow" just doesn't have the same comedic appeal to me....
PEACE
This venue is the coolest and nicest in the entire country. It doesn't hurt that it was built right next to where the original Woodstock took place. That makes it even more moving. You can just feel the energy in that place. The lot scene was awesome. I parked and the next thing I know our entire section is Shakedown St! Couldn't ask for anything more! I couldn't believe how far away from the stage you could be and still hear everything that is going on. The sound was incredible! I've already seen Trey 4 times this year and as much as I love seeing him I'm growing tired of the same songs every night with a slight varation here and there. It is Trey so you can't complain that much and of course I went in to check him out again. He was pretty tight, but I thought he was even tighter New Years with his own band, but it was nice to see him with Mike. Phil was amazing as usual. The St. Stephen and I Know U Rider were smoking. It was a nice touch that he played the deads setlist from Woodstock in the second set. That was touching! Three songs for an encore? Incredible! I don't know whose bright idea it was to shoot marshmallows out of plastic tubes at people, but that crap needs to stop. I know you guys think your funny and think oh it's a marshmallow it won't hurt anyone. Well, I was leaving the show and some a-hole decides he's going to shoot one a few feet away from my car with the windows down and hits my girlfriend right in the eye. She's alright besides a slightly swollen eye, but if your going to screw with people like that then just stay home! Besides that everyone was cool! The moon rising up over the venue was a nice touch to an amazing day/night. Thanks as always Phil! I always appreciate every chance I get to see you!
.......OK how's this?...Trey probably hates me and has good reason to...true not personaly since I did not get caught by security so there is no official record with my name on it, but he certainly would not be totally embracing of me if he knew I was the guy in the Barry Manilow t-shirt who beaned him....I threw a half full plastic water bottle at him once at a show that bounced off his shoulder and got him all wet as it splattered...Jon Fishman is from my hometown so I have heard it from reliably good sources that Trey is somwhat pissed about that incident...
...Rob Darkstar....I was on family vacation at Jersey Shore a few weeks ago and they were giving those things out as boardwalk prizes...I thought they were some sort of smoking appuratus at first...then I saw them at Bethel being sold in the Shakedown lot...I got shot at too with marshmellows and it's only a matter of time until some lunkhead starts shooting small rocks or hardened marshmellows and someone loses an eye...hope your girlfriend is OK....
<<<But why would Trey hate YOU? If you know him personally and he really does hate you - well - thats your business - but I seriously doubt Trey spends a lot of time hating anyone these days - he seems sorta busy - thats all.
Ummm, Mr. Fallen, 'scuse me, but "Trey hates you" or "Trey hates me" is a running joke that stems from Phish's final show (when was that?) from a picture of a girl who was holding a sign that said...(yup) Trey Hates You that was taken at that final show and posted here....sort of been beaten to death but still funny to many people nonetheless.
So really, nothin personal but it's sweet how you come to Trey's defense.
That's my story & I'm stickin to it.
Im fried Megabuzz - never mind me
.Lot a shows last few days.
Anyway - How good does Phil sound these days? Great! Thats how phil sounds. Were all happy.
Tiny marshmallows can't really hurt ya but when they melt on the bottom of your sneaks its ugly.
I missed that Peglette - now i get it.
Been a lot of Trey bashing going on at these shows and I just don't get it. Yeah he's not Jerry - He's Trey.
I got no story - but ones stickin to me
lol...love internet misunderstandings
> every single tune was laden with emotion and played beautifully. Not that there weren't mistakes, but it didn't even matter. Such a great vibe.
theres my review too~
oh yeah....Touch was DEFINITELY a train wreck~
made you ALMOST forget High Time
thanks , Phil
oh yeah to Robin (Melian): what i meant was that i have close to 40 albums. as in live and studio. i have a ton of dick's picks too. so i have enough live stuff.
>>>Im fried Megabuzz - never mind me
....I'm the same way Leaf so pay no attention to me either...was just procrastinating at work as I typed today and killing time before I head out tomorrow for Vermont...you going?...shoot me an email before midnite tonite and I'll trade cell #'s with ya if you wanna share a beer or two...or three...same goes 4 U Peg send to work or profile email addy....
...let there be Phil to fill the air...
Thanks Lunatic Flow! My girlfriend is alright. It was a tense moment to say the least! You'd think oh it's just a marshmallow, but you get hit in the eye with something when you not expecting it! So they had those at the boardwalk huh? What a great prize to give people! I can't believe anyone would give that away. People do the dumbest things! I just never thought I'd see the day when hippies would think it was a good idea to start shooting things at people in the lot. Like you said it's only a matter of time before it's rocks! Don't give them any ideas! LOL!
<<<I can't believe anyone would give that away.
ummmm I actually BOUGHT one of those to shoot at my kids. I think it's pretty funny, they think it's pretty lame. serioussleey.
I liked the high time..I got give a rats hienie if there was some flubs..Jerry Garcia\hunter beauty
I will take that song anyway anyhow..Touch was bit choppy but the lead was powerful..give it a listen when the board is out.
I am ready for some mule now..gotta wait fer brooklyn and Mista Claypool will be in NYC soon.
I hope to see ratdawg fri
those guys shooting the marshmallows after the show. man they were lunatics hahaha. they were shouting GET THE FRO. by the way, i was the guy with the fro.
i love this board...trey hatters...trey lovers....bottom line is i dont think we all realize how lucky we are to have phil still playing. The guy is 66 and still jams hard. Whipping out Reuben and cherise and good unbroken chains. What a tour with the phish boys. Thanks phil. The memories will last forever.
The one things that is wonderful about music is that each individual has the ability to hear it or not. If you don't like it you can leave. As Jerry said once: "if you like it you can dance!".
For those of you who have expressed dissappointment about Trey (which is your opinion and your're entitled) I wish you would not express that here. It is simply mean spirited.
Please show respect for the musicians. All of you who say you don't ike Trey will be the ones selling burritos and wip-hits when phish reunites..and then of course you will all be the 'cool' Trey lovers...cause that is how people are.
The show at Bethel was fantatstic and the run was the best I have ever scene- why? well, that dude with the red hair...he's the best guitarist alive n the plante today- IMHO. Phil- the best Bassist!
The shows from Holmdel to Bethel minus Mansfield are what I caught and when Trey was not present the band lacked a little extra zip in my opinion. They were still great but Trey offered a charisma and is one of few guitarists with a following. When Larry Campebll is not in Phil's band I see him with Dylan- maybe once every 3 years. Same for other guitarists. But Trey stands on his own. And I like that.
I love Phish and the Dead- saw both about 100 times each from '87-'95 then did other things until seeing phish's last stand from '00- 2004. It is great to see Trey on stage with Phil. If you do not know why that is chances are you were born after 1980 and just don't get it.
I almost think that if JG were reincarnated and was playing on stage some of you would say "I wish xyz guitarist were up there instead"...
Just enjoy what we have. I know I am. Shame on all of you for openly puting down a musician on a message board deadicated by grateful fans. How dare you? Who do you think you are? This is Phil and his band...don't put it down. Save the recalcitrant comments for your back yard keg parties. Please...all of these musicians are good and offer wonderful art for all to enjoy.
The Uncle John's and Stephen at Bethel were sick!!!
Cheers! THanks Phil and Thanks Trey!!!!!!!!
<snip>Trey offered a charisma and is one of few guitarists with a following.<snip>
Ummm...let's see, there's Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Luther Dickinson...definitely great guitarists with followings. I'm sure I am missing a few others.
<snip>If you do not know why that is chances are you were born after 1980 and just don't get it.<snip>
Ugh, I HATE generalizations about age! Why do people do that?!? I'm 46 and tired of fans of newer bands who diss us older folks because they think we don't *get it*(I saw that on the North Mississippi All Stars message board recently; fortunately, it was an isolated comment and the other posters were very cool.)And, I'm tired of older fans dissing the newer ones. My best concert-going buddy is 28, and we both "get it." Believe me. She does wish she could have caught more shows, but she gets it. I listen to newer bands as well, so I get it.
And for the record, I'm GLAD I was born before 1980 -- otherwise I would have missed out on the Grateful Dead's amazing late 70s run!!! And that would have been a damn shame.
<snip>This is Phil and his band...don't put it down.<snip>
Agreed we should respect Phil's choices of band members and guests, whether we like them or not. Also agreed that some people are more shitty in their comments about those musicians than others. But you know, when you've seen hundreds and hundreds of shows with a particular musician, such as Phil, it's only natural to want to draw comparisions, don't you think?
Thanks to Phil for his incredible three-show Florida run this summer!
Good to know that trey won't be a parody of himself.
He'll be a parody of others being parodies of themselves.
I wonder if DSO could "do" this Phil/Trey show at this venue.
It would be like a Meta-meta parody.
DSO covers Phil/Trey(who quit Phish to not be a washed up parody) covering set list from worst show ever - Woodstock.
Where I agree BASHING, spewing meanspirited shit just for the sake of spewing meanspirited shit is NOT cool, saying Trey is THE best guitarist alive on the planet, well that is simply YOUR opinion (& hey I respect that) but really, that is entirely a subjective OPINION, no more or no less true or important than anyone else's here. Some agree, some don't.
And yeah, what Robin said, the ability to get IT has NOTHING to do with age!!! And I too, am eternally grateful that I was born early enough to catch Jerry in different incarnations for 18 or so yrs.
And for the record, my complaint about Trey is that FOR ME he overpowers the others, but I think it got lots better as tour progressed. Hey the Feb Beacon/Hammerstein/Lupos/Tower shows were OUT OF THIS WORLD and that was accomplished (w/one exception) sans Trey, and for the record, I think I enjoyed THAT show (muscially speaking that is) the least.
I do respect him as a talented musician, he just ain't MY cup of tea.
<<<< All of you who say you don't ike Trey will be the ones selling burritos and wip-hits when phish reunites..and then of course you will all be the 'cool' Trey lovers...cause that is how people are.
ummmmmmm, I don't THINK so dude. Not by a long shot. lol.
To the above reveiwers...who directly commented on what I have to say, right on...your comments are yours. I don't believe I made any directly negative comments about anyone so there should be nothing to be upset about.
I say Trey is the best guitarist on the planet with a following - warren haynes is good but not that good- IMHO, and you can choose any one you want as your favorite. I always said JG was the best as well when he was alive- in fact Jerry Garcia wa the best guitarist in thehistory of rock and roll and the history of 6 string instruments.
If luther dickinson showed up to play a 5k seat place who would show up? How far would they travel? Haynes...same deal...there is no guitasrist other than Trey who people would travel for and come in masses to see. I can pull the venue records for the shows Haynes played if you want?
Trey has 'IT' and Phil knows that. Why do you think Sless rides the bench in the second set?
As for Age I do think that some people born after 1980 do not get it...too bad if you don't like that comment...
As for Trey 'haters' eventually showing up at Phish shows...it will happen- if Phish reunites. Pegleg...how could you say "not in a long shot?"...how do you know..you have obviously identified youself...
Robin...I am not saying anything about people born before 1980 at all- I was 1970 and I am sure at some point people told me that "I didn't get it' and they were right then and I am right now. Everybody needs to be educated at some point. I read a post recently by some one who said "all my friend say I have bad taste in music when they hear old tapes of Garcia singing in the 80's and he sounds like shit.." Well that person simply does not get it. Sorry folks, we have some people who just are not on the mark when it comes to undertsanding 'the scene' and the music.
But maybe the music is changing and that is good...who am I to say...but it is my opinion and I stand by it.
RESPECT THE MUSICIANS ON THIS BOARD!
<<<...there is no guitasrist other than Trey who people would travel for and come in masses to see.
ummm, Clapton???
<<<Pegleg...how could you say "not in a long shot?"...
I CAN too say "not in a longshot" speaking for MYSELF. I can assure you you'll never find ME hacking burritos and whippits on tour...lol...in response to your overly generalized statement "All of you who don't like Trey..." as I'm not exactly a Trey lover. (But nor am I a Trey basher.)
<<<RESPECT THE MUSICIANS ON THIS BOARD!
I'm with ya there!
what's with all the newbie Phish fans on the board? Is Trey sending you guys here to defend him?
Anyways, I just listened to taperrobs aud of the show on the archive I don't think I'd change a word of my earlier review. Listen to the show - its got some high points - excellent UJB and St Stephen, solid Dark Star, but some real lows. Face it: Touch of Grey sucked.
I'll repeat a comment I made before to those who say that people shouldn't say negative things: this is a review thread. It's not a Trey blow job thread.
Enough of all that. Next up: Fall Tour. Bring it on Phil.
<snip>ummm, Clapton???<snip>
Oh man, HOW could I ever have omitted Clapton?!?
*goes to hang head in shame*
lol Robin, you are just getting old & senile...like me...lol.
gotta love this board! the reviews, comments, playful jabs. You gotta give the musicians the respect though, c'mon. Even if they aint always great, or one guy just doesnt do it for you. LC is awesome with Phil; was great one i saw 'em with Dylan 2. Trey is great too. they all have their moments, and some ar better than others. No one even remarks about RC and his nice playing. And i dig Osby; especially in PNC.
> its not a Trey blow job thread"
>"its a review board"
Well which is it just a review board for you to make stupid mean comments or a review where i can actually say how good something was instead of how bad?
Hey 'Tis for'...please try and relax...
Listen to how angry you sound in your post.
Newbie Phish fan? I don't think so.
Robin...>Clapton?-- well when was the last time you saw him in concert- beside I think we are aware that Clapton has a following and is not a 'new' musician.
>"whats with all the newbie phish fans on the board?
dude..that is just my point- you do not get it!!
Phish phans and Dead Phans are 99% intertwined- do not even try to disagree...of course you represent the 1% differential...I assure you I am anything but a newbie...which by the way is a rather pejorative and recalcitrant way to begin a post.
Have a great day all....
<snip>If luther dickinson showed up to play a 5k seat place who would show up? How far would they travel? Haynes...same deal...there is no guitasrist other than Trey who people would travel for and come in masses to see.<snip>
Wow...there are legions, legions I tell you, of Warren/Mule fans who travel PLENTY to see those guys. And, anyone paying attention knows full well the Allman Brothers have gained many, many new fans who love Warren, and travel to see ABB and Haynes. And true, perhaps not as many travel to see Luther and the NM All Stars -- but that band has a very dedicated following that has indeed traveled all around the country. (And as a side note, if Luther ain't packing them in right now, he will be. Just watch and see. He's an astounding guitarist.)
I also think it's a mistake to gauge a band or musician's popularity sheerly by the numbers who gather at large venues. I've seen the Dead at smallish war memorials, in amphitheaters, at arenas and huge-ass stadiums. Frankly, I'm thrilled Phil and my other heros are playing smaller venues these days. I don't miss those huge stadium shows by a longshot!! I'd rather be able to see, to watch these guys as they perform.
For the record, I think Trey is a talented guitarist, I'll give you that, but he just doesn't *do* it for me. That doesn't mean I didn't like his performance last September at the Comes a Time tribute to Jerry. Still, I'd rather listen to Luther. That doesn't mean I'm right or you're right. And, I'm not bashing Trey, just stating an opinion.
Again, generalities can be dangerous. Or wrong. At the very least, they're certainly not kynd.
At least we all agree that Phil is da man, no?
<snip>lol Robin, you are just getting old & senile...like me...lol. :-) <snip>
LOL, too true! You and me, we would never be selling burritos in any parking lot anyway, we're too old...we'd rather buy them instead.. ;)
Wow, there seem to be an awful lot of awesome people who patronize these boards...which makes me wish I would have started doing this much sooner, years ago! Better late than never, eh?
Well I guess I have to say that yes the Allmans and Warren have had a heck of a following and yes Trucks as well...but as far as Phils past performers who have joined him-scofield, Pevar, Herring,etc...they all have ben fun and provided excellent entertainment but I just do not see most of these guys- okay- except Warren, selling out any big venues...and i undertsand the value of a small venues...Guitarist are a dime a dozen. Hendrix today woul dhave been nobody- any talented young man from Brooklyn justlike him can jam lefty guitar. As for Warren he sounds like almost anyone you here. Herring..same deal. Trey?...I know when I hear Trey's style and it is unique. Same with JG- nobody sounds like him. Look at Mark Knoffler-sp? in Dire Straits...Jimmy Page...the unique signatiure sound is what makes them Great. Trey is great most others are not.
Hey bottomline, I like the way you ended ...We all dig Phil and his band and we all respect the music and hopefully each other...the one line from woodstock in 1969 that ran through my head was the announcer when he said...
" when you go to sleep at night in the woods remember that the man next to you is your brother, and you dam well better remember that or we blow the whole thing..."
Enjoy the summer...good bye all...
you people are just lovely. you've already insulted my favorite live version of touch of grey, trey (hes not great, not sucky), people born after 1980, and phish newbies. i understand im taking all of your statements out of context. but you have to understand. that show was really amazing! i know, i know! it was my first dead concert. but ive listened to many many other live shows (dick's picks, etc.) and i love this one. yeha. i know. you people have your opinions and thats why this board is here.
<<<which makes me wish I would have started doing this much sooner, years ago! Better late than never, eh?
lol...oh this place can be dangerous, do watch out...lol. But there is a really nice mix of folks here generally speaking, a pretty diverse crowd w/our love & respect for Phil as our common denominator.
<<<<I also think it's a mistake to gauge a band or musician's popularity sheerly by the numbers who gather at large venues.
Yeah like let's see who is popular w/the masses...ummm, Britney, Jessica Simpson, and whoever else these days I don't keep up. (thank god) It is NOT about who's POPULAR that's for sure...although I do believe when Phil tours in the larger summer/outdoor sheds he does seem to have a co-billing. (Dylan, Ratbobby).
That would be sweet again, Phil & Dylan or Phil & Bobby.
what would be really sweet is to also have donna back. because she still sings. and she sounds great!
like a terrapin thing. with bob phil and donna. and trey and warren haynes. and dylan. ah heck. all of them! haha
in that case Jonah, why not Billy & Micky. dont see it though, not for a full tour
haha. i guess you like europe 72 and anthem of the sun alot. nice. ohh yeah. micky and billy. its just that john molo. hes such an amazing drummer. he was beastly on sunday!
It's all good.
This thread degenerated fast, lol!
Bunch of wankers, just like their man Trey, LOL!
It's all good.
Even though we all praised the new venue at Bethel Woods, here's some bad news about the show:
http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/BethelWoods_drug s-13Jul06.htm
<snip>On July 9, the State Police at Liberty, Community Narcotics Enforcement Team and Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department conducted an undercover investigation at the Phil Lesh concert. As a result of the investigation, the arrests were made with all of the people arraigned and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of bail.<snip>
That sucks, but it's not really a surprise: while a beautiful region, Sullivan County isn't exactly the most progressive area in the state of New York...believe me it's true, I used to live there.
Wow, that's a HUGE bummer for sure. Only saw one girl getting cuffed, obviously there's lots more.
Goes to show, even when the vibe & overall atmosphere is really sweet & relaxed, still can't let your guard down. Robin what're you doing up so late? lol
Just my 2 cents, but I don't understand why people who apparently 'hate' trey would go to these shows. It is almost like there is a negative outlook before the show begins and when you see everything through that filter, well... I personally thought he did a fantastic job and based on Phil's reactions, I would say he would agree. In fact, during the UJB jam they walked towards each other, turned face to face, and locked into a back and forth that at least for me, was pure bliss. Again just my 2 cents. Peace and have a good weekend.
Well this IS the Philzone, so I'd say many are biased toward Phil & would go & see him no matter WHO is playing with him.
Hey, we ALL have our favorites and Trey (Like EVERYONE else) is no exception.
<<<<Robin what're you doing up so late? lol
Ugh, insomnia heightened by my ridiculously loud-snoring fiance...but thanks to Jerry and the boys, I finally began to get lulled to sleep by an oh-so-sweet "Sing Me Back Home."
insomnia sucks. my husband used to snore LLLLOOOOUUUUDDDDD .... REAL bad, extreme apnea, but 2 yrs ago he got a C-Pap machine to wear at night and now we ALL sleep like babies!!!
<<<<insomnia sucks. my husband used to snore LLLLOOOOUUUUDDDDD .... REAL bad, extreme apnea, but 2 yrs ago he got a C-Pap machine to wear at night and now we ALL sleep like babies!!!:-)
Peglette, would you mind if I emailed you for details on that machine? I'd greatly appreciate any info that could help me sleeeeeep....
(sorry this is so off topic....and now, Back to Bethel.)
sure, please do Robin. It has literally changed the quality of our lives. I know many people who now use them. Apnea can kill ya. Look at Jerry
>>>>>For those of you who have expressed dissappointment about Trey (which is your opinion and your're entitled) I wish you would not express that here. It is simply mean spirited.
.....I agree Nadbern, any personal opinion that disagrees with your way of thinking should most definitely be construed as mean-spirited....I mean really....how else could anything that does not portrey Tray in the best possible light be considered?...especially on a board dedicated to another musician....
....you're entitled to your own opinion as long as you don't express it here...thats's a new Philzone classic!....
<<<<Same old problem at Woodstock site
The original Woodstock concert may have been held 37 years, but one of the problems that plagued the legendary event still haunts the site.
On the second weekend that the new Bethel Woods Center for Performing Arts was opened at that famous Bethel location, the same scourge apparently began to rear its ugly head with 15 people arrested on drug charges.
On July 9, the State Police at Liberty, Community Narcotics Enforcement Team and Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department conducted an undercover investigation at the Phil Lesh concert. As a result of the investigation, the arrests were made with all of the people arraigned and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of bail.>>>
Were there cops making arrests on dru^ charges at Woodstock? The newspaper implies there was a problem with cops making arrests back in 1969?
