I can bring in food and water? Hell yeah! I'm even more psyched. That's a pleasant change from so many venues. Can anybody give me the lowdown on what parking is like for this place?

This is going to be beautiful one, 80+ at night fall, with lake brezzes, hoping the stage design is 'open' in back to allow for the area veiw to take full effect. With Soldiers field in the background. If your facing the stage the top right corner of the risers is the best view of the city and stage.(atleast for a minute or two).

Last phil shows in Chicago were great, so with the spectacular evening and space, you know the band will shoot off over the Lake and into the Sky above.

If you don't have a ticket you can hear the show on the beach just South/east of the venue.

see ya all there.

Chicago Gay Games are going on this weekend, so there could be tens of thousands of people at nearby Soldier Field. Just a heads up - parking may not be a simple matter by the venue.

Here are my pictures. Last night of a four show run that started with Donna the Buffalo in Grand Rapids on Thursday. There Phil shows really hit the spot. This lineup is really riding the groove with Phil.

Nice shots Jeff. That looks like it's a pretty nice little venue on the water with the Chicago skyline. Looks like Phil was into it tonight. Thanks to all for providing the rundown. Was that Blue Sky the first time Barry has strapped on a guitar on the tour?

Eyes>Stephen>11>UJB!!!

Please bring this to the Northwest Philpic

Good show tonight, very high energy. Great first set, lots of nice treats there. Slessaholics rejoice, Barry strapped on the 6 string and tore it up on "Blue Sky." The "Lovelight" was a scorcher, could have been a set closer.

"Golden Road" rocked!! Talk about starting with a bang!. The segue into "Reuben and Cherise" was nicely handled. Larry played the mando for that song. Heard them soundchecking "L.R.R" in Indy, so I wasn't too surprised when they started it. The crowd seemed to respond positively to it. Things really got cooking with the "Eyes." Great version, lots of solos. I could hear Osby for this one. He needs to be turned up more, half the time I can't hear him at all. More kick ass rock and roll with the "St.Stephen> Eleven." Great stuff, I was so hot from dancing. The crowd and band really seemed in synch. "Uncle John's Band" was a treat, with Larry on the acoustic thing that's not a guitar but kind of looks like one (Phil called it a "Cittern" in Nashvile). Short set, only about 82 minutes.

The "Not Fade Away" was a total jamfest. This wasn't any quickie, disposable encore. They took this one around the block and then some. And if that wasn't enough, Phil blessed us with a sweet as pie "Box of Rain." Sunshine and rain, all in the same show. Go Phil!

Such a wonderful day! God Bless us everyone! Started out joining the philzone crew and ate a bunch of ribs and chicken wings and brats and stuff. They are nice folks. Then saw the tooboard crew who were flying kites and then my homies in the dnc crew started arriving. I was a bit anxious and got there a bit early, but what a great venue!! Right on the lake and views from the top of the place of the lake and the marina, Soldier Field site of the last Dead show directly behind the stage, the skyline in clear site, it is the best venue in Chicago as far as I'm concerned.

Saw just about everybody. Great to hang with y'all! Let's do it again some time. Holy moses what a show! Some beautiful stuff coming from this band and it's close to if not better than the Q.

My favorite stuff was in the first set starting with Larry singing on the Deep Elem. Larry did an old school blues interpretation of the song and it worked. His voice is great. Then Phil totally nails the Ryan tune STars Go Blue or whatever, what a great song!! Phil's voice actually sounds good on it. I know that you know that I don't mind Phil's voice, but I bet even Schabs would admit that Phil's voice sounded polished on this number. Seems that Phil is really working with this band and vice versa and they are arranging some nice harmony parts and transitions between songs. Then into a very nice sounding Blue Sky which confirms how well the ABB thing works in the GD environ. It just worked great there. Then one thing that is not added is that they ended the blue sky with a jam and the end riff to Here Comes Sunshine which made this series of songs so complete and so cool.

The Lovelight started off a bit slow. I wasn't completely sold on Joan's interpretation at first. And Larry turned up too loud and did this typical rock and roll sounding solo. I was beginning to get bored with this song when Larry stops his solo and Osby steps in and he and Phil just take it out there and do some great jazz sounding stuff. Barracco is a great keyboardist. It's true that he sometimes sounds busy, but I think that is because he has a lot to say musically and can say it well. However, the guitarists do not seem to have the chops to do the jazz thing and when they came in on this great Lesh/Osby thing they were only treading water with it.

At this point I thought how cool it would be to see a quartet with Molo, Lesh, Barracco and Osby. Osby is an amazing talent and very tasteful in what he throws in and when he gets room to do his thing, he and Lesh are making some very inspired music together. So, anyhow, Joan took hold of the way that Lesh and Osby changed the entire delivery of this song and nailed the end of it.

In set 2 I was completely sold on Joan with a wonderful version of Lazy River Road. That song made me really happy. Thank you, Joan! There's something about her. It's just that she's somewhat vulnerable and when she sings you can really feel her emotion and so it doesn't necessarily hit all the time with her, but when she does, she hits it hard! This Lazy River Road was one for the ages.

The NFA>Box encore was perfect as a fitting tribute to the last song played by the GD at Soldier Field was the same, of course.

I must throw props out to Phil for getting out there and throwing down so that we can really get down! My goodness it's amazing how much he does what he does night after night. Nobody can make the bass guitar sound like him and he is one of the best there is. As far as I am concerned the best bassist ever. EETTPO Jaco.

It was a long show despite the early ending. They started right at 7 with no opening band. I got a cool Gonesh batik shirt from India, but the X-Large in India isn't quite XL in USA. I'm going to need to scale down on the ribs and chicken wings to fit into that baby. Oh well, got Tracy a nice Phil shirt. That'll fit her.

Nice lake breeze that cooled things down. I think I liked to see Joan sweating. She's got something about her that is so damned sexy. It's not a traditional sort of beauty, but that is where the individuality of her character is. She's not particularly got much of a GD sort of vibe, but she handles these songs with more authenticity than anyone I've seen sing them sometimes. Sometimes she misses the mark a little bit, but when she does her thing, it really works.

Security was pretty lax and the second set everybody was dancing in the aisles.

Man, that was a good time. first time to a show on Northerly Island and I really dug the venue. The steady breeze off the lake kept it from being as nightmarishly hot as it could have been. The first set was good, though that new Adams song became an excuse to find the restrooms (which were gloriously air-conditioned). The Lovelight was stellar as was everything else played. The second turned me into a dancing ball of sweat. The St. Stephen->Eleven rocked like a mother, as did Eyes of The World. By the time Not Fade Away came around for the encore my voice was raw from singing and I was soaking wet with perspiration. A great night.
I was never really a big fan of the PLQ line up. I know that puts me in the minority here, but there was something about Haynes/Herring that left me cold more times then not, but the last two Phil shows I've seen, both with Sless/Campbell have been some of the best things I've ever seen in a long list of concert going experiences. I'm glad I gave Phil and Friends another shot. It's really been paying off.
Also, the cops outside the show may have been a little dicky, but inside the security hardly seemed present. My friends had 5th row seats, while I was 20 or so back and we just walked down with them with no one even looking at us. The seats by them were empty, since the occupants spent the entire show in the aisle. So it worked out perfectly.

I agree, smoking show, great line-up and setlist. There's a pic of Larry playing fiddle on the setlist pop-up, but he didn't play any fiddle this night. He did play mando and cittern in addition to multiple strats and tele's. He did a solo intro to Deep Ellum that was real nice and showed his confidence leading this band in blues mode. His mando work on Ruben was excellent and played nicely with the lyrics (Ruben played his painted mandolin...). I'd seen Larry several times with Dylan, so I was pumped to see him with Phil. He definitely delivered in my opinion - great playing and a seemingly deliberate avoidance of trying to ape Jerry guitar parts in any way, which I appreciated. He made the tunes fresh and his own.

Osby was on and off stage variously throughout the night, but I thought he really did a great job when he was out there. His deconstructive jam with Phil during Lovelight was a major set one highlight.

Barry was blasting some serious steel at times, really stating his presence during Deep Ellum, and of course his guitar duel with Larry during Blue Sky completely fired the place up.

Phil was looking and sounding great and appeared to be enjoying himself throughout. I don't know if it was my vantage or what, but I wasn't getting the major bomb factor out of Phil's bass - he was clear and crisp and audible, but I wasn't getting the heavy end of the bass as much as I would have liked (I was right in front of the stacks to the right of the stage). I'm curious for any other takes on this point. Phil said "Nice place you got here" about the venue at the start of the donor rap, and indeed, it is a nice place (my first time there).

Joan and Rob both sang excellently all night, and Rob did great on keys, esp. with stuff like HCS and Golden Road. And Molo was of course a killer driver of the machine all night long. I had a perfect view of him from where I was sitting, and really enjoyed watching him play off Larry all night, adding accents, raising or lowering overal intensity, etc...

The Ryan tunes were new to me, and I felt like the crowd lagged a bit for these, but the major jams out of both of them turned that around in a hurry, esp. during the first set.

I definitely liked this incarnation of the band, maybe even moreso than I expected to. This was my only show of the tour, but I've been reading the other reviews, and was impressed at how well they seemed to know the material tonight. No blunders whatsoever, and some very focused and enjoyable playing ensued, esp. during the last half of the second set, which was the biggest jam of the night, and continued on into the NFA encore (which may well have been done in response to the small but enthused group of dancers to the right of the stage who clapped and chanted for NFA during the entire encore break). It was definitely a full-fledged rocking version, and Box of Rain was a perfect way to close it out. Keep it coming, Phil.

A cittern is rather like a guitar, or a lute--hollow, rounded wooden body made of up to six separate pieces and, sometimes, stabilizing pegs inside, attached to a flat wooden fretboard. It has six strings that have to be tuned.

A sitar is made of one single gourd that may be attached to a wooden fretboard (originally, the neck of the gourd served as the fretboard), with moveable frets beneath five to eight strings. The fretboard, which is deeply concave, contains as many as 20 resonating strings that are not tuned per song.

Aside from the fixed-fret vs. adjustable-fret difference, and the presence of resonating strings on the sitar, the major separating factor between descendants of the lute and the class of Indian stringed instruments to which the sitar belongs (related to the sarod) is harmonic. The sitar is tuned by microtones, in scales that may be unique per raga; the cittern is among the Western fretted instruments that are usually tuned to equal temperament.

Scott,

Re you Phil sound comment and request for other perspectives: yes, I agree (as I do, verbatim, with your review) that Phil wasn't as thunderous as I would've liked. I was dead center further back, about 10 rows in front of the board.

I went to the Boca show a few weeks ago, and Phil was shaking the entire place (though I think Chicago was a better show, overall).
