Got a lot of reviews posted in Other Stuff by folks that watched and listened via ATT delayed stream..
Lookin for reviews from those at Festival..
I was pretty disappointed by this set all in all, especially after seeing Phil melt my mind just 12 hours before. It never really got momentum until the Help->Slip->Frank. I haven't checked out the other reviews yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if people weren't thrilled.
Testing...Is this thread working..??..
There has been some great reviews of Orleans show..and mention on that thread and in Other Stuff of this show at Festival that afternoon..
But a Phil show with no reviews..??..
friggin grate, not sure what any of the phish songs were and neither did any of the phish heads standing next to me in the front row.
ghost slow repetive song, bunch of teases. the sound at the orleans sucked. i was front row center and all i could here was trey's guitar and he seems to like to tweek it out on this high chord that resembles a little beatles and clapton influence. sorry trey i just wanted them to turn you down cause i could barely here larry and ole my friggin god i could barely here phil. Geeze but a killer crypital but the other one tease was sooooo lame. it is so much better when the bass fader is about 20 decibals higher. it was a tease. teased all nite long. great mountains which was interupted again by that twang trey plays with some song that 26 days outo of the cold and i was wonderering if there were more words to that song the lyrics were the same days getting out of the cold. oh well. really was a sweet dark star though....they kept fading in and out of it.......was super sweet and man... phil's mic was so low i could barely here it. the eleven tease was so sweet for sure thought they were going to play it. uh hello they slid a wharf rat some where which i love that song wasn't one of there best but still love ole bonnie lee that sweet heart is the truest. thought they were gonna encore china cat but went into rider after violee. larry has such a good sound and he could call and respond to any melody twisting the sound around the wave the melts your heart. tooo bad i could barely here it though. doesn't seem like phil had a strong arm in calling the shots that nite. over all i was really disappointed because not only do i go to hear the music i go to feel it. i couldn't feel those low notes or any note for that matter. still though it was a very good show.
as for the vegoose festival now that was a friggin great sound set up. dam that shit could blow you away... the skin right off your bones if you were standing close enough. i know this doesn't belong here but i can not help but mention the rythem devils and hunters new songs... "gotta get to your house you house gotto get to your house." man hunter love that song. listening to those two drummers play together is like like getting bits of pieces of a sound that is long gone. the missing link i might say to any greatful dead song is mickey, billy, bobby, and phil. so long Greatful dead i love you more than words can tell. all i need now is a big projector and about 5000 acid hits and i can imagine its 1969. the festivis were off the hook. the boys are the rockenest musicians i have ever heard. more on vegoose later!
LONG LIVE THE DEAD!!!!!!!
Wow..Mattymat the magician pulled the rabbit out of the hat..
OK thoughts about the Festivle set. I thought its wasn't as powerful as the night before. The sound was good I didn't have any trouble hearing any particular musician but being as far back as we were the crowd definetly had more of a bearing on us than the music. I thought the best song of the set was Let It Ride really good stuff in there. I also liked the H>S>F. That being said it was definetly the best set of sunday as the RD and Panic didn't do much for me this day. It was really great to see Jimmy again though.
Let It Ride has been my number one listened to song since I got "Cold Roses" a few months ago..
In case ya have not seen it performed live heres one the author did on Letterman..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7WjCTmSm_M
Yea, the Let It Ride rocked... I love that tune, and it was fitting for Vegas. Tonsofsteel called that one... good call tons... ;-)
Overall, the show wasn't that bad... LARS was a treat, and so was Row Jimmy. Yea, it was a little choppy, but it's okay, you'll have that from time to time.
I don't think the show sucked, and I've seen worse. Granted, it could have been better, but who cares... I had a great time dancing to the music, and so did most people dancing around me. I never heard one person at the fest say that it sucked. It didn't have the intensity of the show earlier in the day, but it was good.
Oh yea, the best song of the night... Little Wing... Jimmy Herring wears a hat that says god on it...
I really enjoyed this set. And yeah, everybody around me was having a great time too. So maybe it wasn't as intense as the night before (more accurately, that morning) but so what!
I love Let It Ride, and yes, it did rock and brought a tear...throughout both shows I was hearing a lot of lyrics about letting go and endings and beginnings, darkness to light, loss to recognition/discovery and thinking about Phil.) Like a Rolling Stone was a really nice surprise (esp. after the recent Dylan show)
We were pretty close, but it wasn't too crowded, always room to dance and at some point the space opened up and we had this great wild dance party with our neighbors.
Seeing Phil twice in one day...priceless.
I wasn't ready to go
I'm never ready to go
Just watched video of LARS..damn that song has a lot of lyrics..
phil and phriends thank you for a wonderful 7 years and a speedy recovery phil.
I can promise I would have left really early the night before, as the setlist is my ultimate snoozefest...
The festival set was far stronger than I had any aspirations for...the Help/Slip...well...come on, MOLO...it was pretty darned good...it was a solid show, perhaps with no memorable guitar leads...but solid, and it's always going to be the songs that draw me...Second Adams' tune was real purty...
and Trey, well, Trey was good...it isn't like he sucks or has no chops or talent...
Nothing to cry home about.
The Rhythm Devils had a great vocalist...that's the only thing I remember about that...beauteous voice.
Panic...the festival show was better for me, but hey...what do I know...seen them 8 times pre-Jimmy, post Mike. But I loved that show...it was just tasty for me...
Snoozefest...wow, ok man.
Festival set, which I only heard from the tapes...
SUCKED. Phil was trying hard, but Trey just wasn't there. Row Jimmy was the worst train wreck I've ever heard, and i would be surprised if Phil was happy with it... It was really rough. Shakedown was OK except for Trey's vocals... Rolling Stone was good but the band couldn't agree on the chorus. Then there was Mike G's failed banjo appearence. This set just never took off. The band had great potential, and I'd like to hear more medeski with Phil... but this set was a downer. Even NFA had some bumps.
If we ignore Row Jimmy, this show is a solid B-grade Phil... With RJ, this is B- or worse... sorry folks. The setlist was OK and there were some bright moments (Molo rocks), but it was quite underwhelming.
Dewit..Your post above..
I am not sure I get which shows you went to..
I think for sure you saw Phil and Panic at Festival..
Were you at the Phil show at Orleans..??..
Were you at Panic at MGM..??..
10-30-05 The Joint.. twas you that dragged me down up close where a few Zoners were and the 3 set show that followed..and the fact my ticket came from your husband..I will never forget that night..
I was at Dave and Tim, and Panic and Maceo Parker and someone else (? same night as Dave and Tim).
The setlist from Nighttime Phil is my ultimate snoozefest...so glad we didn't make it...the plan had been to see Maceo then drop in and hang with friends at Phil...we didn't care much about the show anyways...in the end, we skipped it.
Phil on the lawn was much better than the taped description above...there was a stiff breeze and I think the mics got wind blowing sound around. it was far better than that, and we know I don't really care so much these days. The solid B though is accurate...cause it was. The review above would rank a D to me, personally.
Panic and Crowes on the lawn, my two favorite shows...we railed for the Crowes and made Huck get her first dose of them...it was a wonderful set of music and played so very well...
Panic setlist on the lawn was just more appealing to me...we had lots of room and a great view and good people...that said, we had the same set up exactly at MGM and I loved the execution, but the setlist wasn't all "mine"...I am still really new to them, very new...
Trey with Phil was very good...competant, and played well...I personally felt no magic at all during it...but, as you know, the bus got to small for me last New Years.
Last year, the show we hung together...that was my best Phil show in years...of course it was the night that brought Jimmy to Panic eventually...but hey..one band gathers what another band kicks out ...I remember it well.
Either way, Vegoose is the best festival for us...lots of cosmopolitan diversion with your music. It is a wonderful vacation for us, cause even though Fred has to work, your total removal from everyday life is absolute in that city and you really do get distanced from work. I grew most fond of it last year, and cemented that feeling this year...
>>>The setlist from Nighttime Phil is my ultimate snoozefest...so glad we didn't make it

Dark Star, Mountains and Rat...yes, my ultimate late night snooze fest...certainly not new news...been posting that for years...
I went to see musak that I loved...nothing wrong with that, and nothing dissing this band, the setlist isn't my cup o joe at that hour of the day...the day show was most pleasant, and moved at a different pace.
MOLO
so on october 29th phil's late-night performance opened-up with an ashtray tune and ended with an ashtray tune? supposedly everyone, including phil's mic, was turned way-thefuck-down? damn, sounds like you guys got ashtrayed! sucks getting ash in your ears .. and what is plasma? anyway, i heard jimmy ripped little wing with wsp, damn, wish i was there. steve ripped it at gotv on sunday.
Damn Lava... you so do not understand how wrong you are about the late night show... by all accounts it was the shit
i apologize,
but trey louder than phil?
i hope that's an incorrect recollection.
Friends:
We can all argue the beauty of one show versus another (songlist/venue/atmosphere) but I was on the floor (maybe row 15 or so) at the Orleans late nite show and felt every beat of it in the deepest recesses of my soul, with Phil's bass leaving numerous quivering bombs radiating through every bone of my body - as I previously suggested, I have never seen him play so violently yet so beautifully and he was supported by terrific musicians, well-balanced in their contribution (except maybe Larry who was a bit low) and in a venue and with a crowd psychadelically charged like none recently. There was an inate passion and energy to the show and nothing seemed muffled, either musically or spiritually to me - it seems that this even comes across in the subsequent recordings I have heard of this show - Mountains was great, St Stephen electric and even the Phish stuff, like Plasma, really fit in beautifully with Phil's musical mosaic.
To summarize: no ashtray...EPIC...
where i was standing i had to lean in to hear phil.....and that sucked for me since i flew 2000 miles just to hear phil.... but no biggi maybe he will get well soon.... jam with his old school brothers one last time for us who love him so much.....it wasn't a bad show or anything like that i just was whining that i couldn't hear phil i could't hear him sorry. i thought it was a solo band until i looked up and saw four other people playing....but i couldn't hear them....oh well no biggie.......that could have been the last phil and phriends show......thank god i was there.......please phil take care of yourself.
>>> with a crowd psychadelically charged like none recently.
I hope you mean "PHIL" shows in that statement, and not other music.
Box of Rain...you cannot win in the situation you were in...I hope you had a great time anyways.
i am not trying to win....others around me felt the same way.....i am not playing a game i merely stating an opinion...and i am not sure what you mean by and not other music?
Dark Star, Mountains and Rat...yes, my ultimate late night snooze fest
You been snortin' that oxy with yer buddy Rush, dewit.
That shit's morphin' ya into da buckster. Critiquing a show you weren't even at.
just listen to the discs.
Medeski tore it up especially on the B3.
Molo brought the thunder and larry campbell and Trey had some great chemistry.
Phil's pushing the envelope yet again.
My biggest gripe was that they didn't start 'til 1:45.
I didn't mind the late start. Listening to Abbey Road was fun as hell too.
>>>Listening to Abbey Road was fun as hell too.
So true.. I have a whole new apreciation for that album
Clarification for niarfoxob: coreect - only commenting on crowds state of being recently at Phil shows
Comment for Dyerwolf: agree fully what Medeski brought to the table that night/morning
i shouldn't wine i had a blast and the music was super good
i wish everyone would stop hating trey. i jumped on the phish bandwagon in 95', in the middle of the dead's summer tour. yes, it was a weird transition at first and i really didn't know what hit me. it actually took me about 2 or 3 phish shows to really understand their groove. i was a little biased at first, because i was used to jerry. then i opened my mind and started to really listen the funk, melodies, and ranges that trey's guitar can take you. we are never going to agree on the same pizza toppings, comparing apples to oranges is just a waste of time, and comparing jerry to trey is ridiculous. they are two different people with two different sounds, but both they both have a compassion for music. 30 some phish shows later, i'm craving badly for another one, and i would go anywhere to see Phil just as well. why can't we agree to disagree and stop dogging trey. he rocks and i can't think of another guitar player better in the music business today. i may not agree with all of his solo choices, but playing with phil is like a wet dream. i wish i was lucky enought to see them play together. the one phil show i saw this summer, trey did not play with them and i was disappointed with that, even though it was a good show. i don't see the hype with larry campbell, i think there is so many more players better than him. please stop dogging trey, he would kick michael kang's ass for all you string cheese fans. trey has brought me many good memories, along with jerry as well, but i don't compare the two because i can't. i just like to enjoy good music and see players that like to take risks, some times it might suck and other times it will pick you up and kick your ass. Phil and Trey both rock and I hope they keep playin' together. i pay my money. peace.
God speed for Phil to get well and kick cancers ass. Sending love and prayers for you to have a speedy recovery so we can dance and sing together again.
larry cambell, john scofield, wareen, trucks, young...?
my first phish 95 too....after 50 more still couldn't get into the groove....i think it was lyrics like run like an antelope and possum your end is the road.... i wasn't dogging him......just why was he louder than everyone else? its true silly and serious are on the oppisite ends of the spectrum.....god bless phil......get well you rocking hipster and give us something to live for......THE MUSIC of course......trey's all right i guess but definitely not worth my time dogging or fighting for........i just thought he was tooo loud....and that chord he kept tweeking out was like a cat in heat.....sorry....
he isn't my favorite friend of philss....no biggi.....
Y'AllS GOTS TO CHILLS. Those VeGOOSE shows were EPIC. The setlist Phil puts forth comes from his SOUL. It Sounds like YOU FEEL IT or YOU DONT. I went home feeling it, and i'm still feeling it. Cryptical> Other 1> Dark Star> Mts>Stephen> 11> are the like the chapters of my favorite book!! That was one of the most unique versions with some wild phish songs improved in the mix. I will Be FEELING THAT FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY! (It also helps whittling your way up to THE FRONT!!)
Phil: No Wristband at this fest??!!???
Be well at Phil U. Never let this VeGoose message board go to rest - they were shows to remember for the rest ;)
It also helps whittling your way right to the front!!
Crimedawg
Was about 15 rows back, who knows, maybe even closer, as everything was so dynamic on the floor that close - agree with EPIC and hope as everyone hears the music now out there as a BT or elsewhere they wil appreciate at least part of the magic of this show. I may always use this show as my standard, even when compared to 1st show (Temple '99), last Q (Tower '03), only PLF new years shows (SF '05, esp 12-30) or best PLF with Trey (Camden '06) - something about the songlist (a lot of older spacey stuff mixed in with cool Phish tunes), the sound on the flor (esp the bass), the passion of the band (esp Phil and Medeski and Molo) and the venue/atmosphere/crowd - maybe even something to do with Phil's health issue and prospect of no shows for a year (who knows) - just happy I was there and still reliving the experience, if you cannot tell.
>>>Medeski tore it up especially on the B3.
Molo brought the thunder and larry campbell and Trey had some great chemistry.
Phil's pushing the envelope yet again.
And that is only YOUR opinion, dude.
As for criticizing a show I wasn't at...I DID NOT.
I expressed that those songs bore me. That is MY opinion. I got on this P&F bus early, and I was blessed to see more shows than most...I am completely equipped to say those songs are my ultimate snoozefest...
and asshole, I resent the OXY comment. It ain't any funnier than someone dissing your kid right?
Hey dimwit,
If you call Dark Star and Mountains a snooze fest then yer either snortin' oxy or, more likely, ya never got it.
Well, I can speak to a couple of things, but since it's been awhile, not certain anyone still cares.
The late night show was two different beasts. 1st set it was Trey who didn't get it; seemed like he thought all he had to do was show up.
He got it by the 2nd set and through the end of the show, IMNSFHO!
1st set c+
2nd set a-
encore off the curve! ;-)
Festival set was just that a festival set. very nice and fairly tight; call it a solid B, maybe b+
Dyer, Dew definitely got it and still has it, so you are off base and don't get all testy when someone calls you on a comment like the OXY one, which again IMNSFHO was undeserved.
Play nice you two!
peace
Dyer, Dew definitely got it and still has it, so you are off base and don't get all testy when someone calls you on a comment like the OXY one, which again IMNSFHO was undeserved.
Oh Dim's champion to the rescue, how touching.
I'm not sure innie ever got or even saw Garcia.
The oxy comment alludes to her penchant for all things rush.
It's all good (panic lingo), she's in wid dem now and will never darken another Phil show .
Is there a sbd or matrix available from this show??
Does vegoose not do official dl's? Maybe Phil will release this as a xmas present?? :-)
>>> If you call Dark Star and Mountains a snooze fest then yer either snortin' oxy or, more likely, ya never got it.
Those songs more often than not are very boring. You have to wade through 27 minutes of aimless noodling to find the 3 minutes of Dark Star magic - I'd much rather hear a couple tunes half the length that don't waste so much time trying to get there.
Poz..you know what they say...
When in doubt..
Stop dancin like a frickin maniac and twirl..
>Oh Dim's champion to the rescue, how touching.
Hardly, but thanks for playing and please bite me!
I thought better, but guess I'll add you to the other list. You know the Zoners I don't give a rat's ass if I ever meet. :-(
Small list but has and continues to grow ever larger, the less I frequent this place, the less I wants to come back.

admittedly, math is not my greatest stength.
with that said, it appears that only 10% of the setlist above are phish songs. approximately 15% were trey anastasio songs. approximately 5% is credited to "traditional, arranged by..." that leaves roughly 70% of the setlist being grateful dead material - with the outlier being 'One For The Rose.' someone else please check my results and make note any corrections.
please note i was not in attendance and cannot actually offer any review.

Ok... Looks like I have first review....
First... the short version...
Holy shit!!!! What the fuck was that!!!! Amazing!!!
Now, the longer version...
I spent the day at the festival listenimg to underwhelming music, and left before Tom Petty to get to the Orleans arena in plenty of time. The Orleans arena is connected to a hotel and casino of the same name. I hate casinos and vegas in general, but as far as casinos are concerned, this was a good one to have a show at (large plaster crocodiles and bright colors were in attendance). I sat in the front of the seat section in the back middle (almost exactly centered on the stage). The only draw back to the venue wa that there were brightly lit budwiser dispenseries at the back of the floor which distracted from the amazing visual display that was the light show (does anyone know who was working the lights.. or the soundboard for that matter?). The sound was fantastic... loud, but not too loud, well balanced, three dimensional. There were unfortunately many drunken loud talkers about, but ultimately that did not detract from the show (in fact, it punctuated it's relevance).
All of the musiciand played/sang very well. I think I can finally say that I have seen a show that was better than any GD show I have ever seen (I have been searching my memory to determine if this assesment could really be true... I think it is). Iam really curious to see what others who were there think.
It seemed to me that the musicians were there to confront dark energies, and take a stand for the light... this was reflected in the song choices, the way they were played, and the interplay between the band members. I also feel that during this concert, Trey seemed to grow as a musician before my very eyes.
Abbey Road was played before the show, during the set break, and after the show.
From here, I will go song by song...
-What's Become of the Baby?
I do not recall this, I experienced it as a free jam... at this point it seemed that they were just geting used to dealing with their instruments and adjusting the sound... it sounded cool though.
-Ghost
A brialant choice for an opener. As I recall, the structured parts were a little shaky at first, bu tthe jaming took off in amazing directions. During this song, and indeed throughout the night, the jaming had a distinctly halloweenish vibe. I was envisioning purples and greens and orange and black (indeed, these colors were used in the light show a lot)... I envisioned skittering spiders and cobwebs, and demon imps, and imposing stone structures, and zombies, and the hosts of hell. I waa amazed at how they were able to conjure those vibes musically. As the show progessed, it changed from a cartooney version of these things to a more serious manifestation of the evil that is inherent at the heart of Las Vegas (I see it as an evil place)...part of our country, the world at large, and indeed that which threatens to overtake any one of our hearts. At times, I felt like I was surrounded by hosts of demons, or standing at the gates of hell as the tide of evil threatened to push forward and break through. To me, another subtext of the evening was Jerry, the gifts he bestowed upon us, and his curent absence. In a way, it felt that the story of the ghost in question was him. In any case, ghost was briliantly played.
-Cryptical Envelopment>The Other One
Beautifuly done. Though cryptical was not perfectly executed, the energy was tremendous.. again, thoughts of Jerry. The other one was powerful with exquisite jaming. I should note that Medeski was a superb inclusion to this music. The interplay between him and Trey was absolutely fantastic. There was some very creative tone use going on.
-Drifting
Beautiful... Just exquisite... I had never heard this one before.
-Dark Star
Extremely well played. The lyrics were mesed up a bit if memory serves. I think they were inebriated, so I can forgive the lyrical foibles... the jaming was solid throughout the show. The dark forces were gathering. Hard to give details on darkstar....
-Mountains Of The moon
This is where the shit really hit the fan for me. The composed section suffered a bit from an audience that would not be quiet enough to give it the space it needed. When it got to the end of the song with the final 'hi ho the carion crow, bow and bend to me, bend to me'... Phil emphasised the last 'bend to me', and it was like he was comanding the dark/evil energies present to cease and desist (it was like Gandalf dealing with Saruman in the Two Towers movie). The music at that instant spiraled into a fractal movement of grapling with the carrion crow (whose ass Phil of course put in place... with a little help from his friends). It felt like being part of a elvish magic ritual to hold back the swelling horde during the time of year when it is most able to cross the planes... fantastic!
-46 Days
Now this was interesting. It started off being played in a typical 'I am playing a song' fashion by Trey. It seemed that he was being asked to sing it like he meant it, which he eventualy got to. It really felt at times that trey was being mentored in the art of really bringing the music, a challenge that he rose to beautifully IMHO. There were other times where he led phil on a impshly merry chase just when you thought a jam was about to conclude. It was great to watch the elder/youngster exchange... at times the strengths and weakneses of each side were illustrared.
-St. Stephen>The Eleven>
Fantastic... During the eleven (at least I think it was during this song), my thoughts started to stray toward what Jerry would think if he could whitness this music (I was sure he would be pleased)... then I thought what would happen if he actually was whitnessing it.. then I thought what would happen if he could lend his will t the experience.. right as that thought came, the music hit a peak of intensity that was amazing (only equaled by the last song shine). I felt sure of his presence. I suppose if it were to happen, it would be near the eve of all hallows when the veil between the world are at their thinest... perhaps an intentional focus of the event.. I don't know...
-Plasma
this song sounded vaguely familiar, but it was fucking awsome... Even the composed portion was strong. It felt like rebirth energy followed by a golden white lion (think Aslan from the CS Lewis stories). Triumphant, strong, and wholy of the light... take that minions of darkness! Beautiful song... a new favorite of mine. A consistent theme through the night seemed to be passing on the ability/responsibility to create this music to the next generation. The fact that the ycould play this music showed that it was not dependent on Jerry.
-Dark Star>One for The Rose>Dark Star>
Hard to be specific here... really good though. I have never heard 'one for the roses' I could not understand the words Phil was singing.. probably the least engagng portion of the evening for me.. whatever, I am sure the words mean something beautiful and important.
-Wharf Rat
I spent a good portion of this song trying to get the people behind me to shut up... they were louldy talking to each other during the bridge. It seemed that one of them realized that the song was about them part way through, and they got real quiet.
-I know you rider
Powerful and well played...
-Viola Lee
Very well played... it had more of that conjuring of evil/bad assness. A very haloweeny viola.
-Here comes sunshine
Yes indeed, a perfect choice to greet the morning... Again, it seemed to have relevance in welcoming the light energy to triumph over the dark.
-Shine
Another song where Trey first went to a sing songy place, but was stimulated to play it with heart felt meaning. By the end of the song, all the singers were screaming 'shine on' together while playing with all their might. A decleration of which side this group of people are comited to serving. Very powerfuly played. It bears mentioning that throughout the show, the musicians seemed to be playing with all their might. They were playing for their lives. I am grateful that they were willing to put that much of their energy into creating the space they did.
The beatles 'cary that weight' was played at concerts end.
The horde has been met at the gate and sent back yet again...

First to Binlajolla... Yes, I did go to see them and the rhythm devils on Sunday. It was ok, but not great. The rhythm devils played well, but kept it pretty tame... not very explarotory. I did not like the singer very much... I think Joan would do better with them. Phil and all played ok, but it was evident that they were tired from the night before (Trey actually played midnight shows botht the nights before, and he espicially seemed whiped). They completely butchered row jimmy... I have not really seen a great row jimmy since Jerry passed. Bird song and help slip frank were pretty good though... Trey seemed to come alive at the end. Mike Gordon came on stage to play banjo and Trey's guitar during back on the train. Trey teased divided sky, but alas it did not happen. I was thinking that if Phil and Trey keep playing together (a seemingly good idea), I would like to see some pairing of Phish and Dead deep jam songs... imagine a...

The coolest thing about Sunday was that I had a very good crowd experience. People were generally quiet, friendly, and respectful of each others personal space. I have not experienced that for a long time.
Then to Paddieu...
It is/was my pleasure to share my experience with yall... I wrote a review for the Warfield show last December, but alas it is no longer here... glad you enjoyed

Nice review Skullcap! A good friend of mine pretty much echoed your sentiments exactly when he called me today.
I really hope that Phil/Trey releases a SBD of the late-night show!

By Adriane Bovone (Osha) (71.141.148.43) on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 - 02:55 am: Edit Post
At some point during the first set, it was clear that there were things happening that couldn't be accounted for by the limitations of human technology - there were HUGE energies present and it was INTENSE SHIT let me tell you. When Skullcap says they were playing for thier lives, he is not merely being poetic.
I also saw a golden white lion during Plasma...
But what was really mind-blowing was the Snake. This being was huge; because the music was so completely, deeply 3-dimensional, this energetic was able to encompass the whole fucking arena perhaps (I think, as I write this) by using the soundweb as a conduit to this plane of existence. It was such a magnificent creature. At first, it showed off it's incredible scale patternings (purple and green and pink and white and black) and muscular form. Then, it basically turned itself inside out; the arena(basically a cathedral-in-motion - an exquisite worm hole) shifted from gliding up the outide of the snake to going down its throat (at lightning speed mind you) where it simply split open, spewing its contents frighteningly and gloriously, shifting the arena-space once again, this time into a shower of gothic arches made of shimmering snakeskin-scale-fractals.
I understand Snake is associated with Transformation; it seemed clear to me that an initiation or sprititual testing was occurring. I think this may have been happening personally for the musicians as well as for the audience members. For the musicians in the sense that this particular level of music making was new for all but maybe Phil and they had to come to grips with the power and potential of their music while actually making it; I get the sense that Trey particularly sensed what was happening and metaphorically ripped open his chest in humble acquiesence to this amazing Snake god/teacher/creature in order to learn from it.
For the audience, I sensed they were being tested by both this presence as well as the musicians (perhaps Snake was called upon intentionally? I remember the opening song feeling like an invitation to the humans in attendence as well as to other beings - fey, gods, whatever - to take note and take part in the music). Anyway, the audience was being asked to face their dark sides; to grapple with and tame them in order to put that energy used to feed the dark into the light.
Make no mistake: These musicians are the Jedi of our times. And our times are very bleak indeed. If you think Phil and Trey (and Larry and Molo and Medeski)'s life work is to entertain you, you are greatly misinformed. These people are communicating with deep intent. I would say they were imploring us to get our shit together because there is work to be done, and it needs doing NOW. These concerts are not about fan's escapism - nuh uh - they're about facilitating meaningful transformations so that people can find it in themsleves to choose and commit to being an opposing force to the alarmingly vital dark wave of today.
So, can the "it's just not the PLQ" and "I hate Trey" or "I hate Ryan" or "it's not like the '70s" and "the slow songs just killed it" assessments of this work just stop? That's not what it's about. It's not the '70s, it's today; it's not about playing as loud and as fast as humanly possible for a whole show. It's really about giving these exceptionally talented and kind human beings the space to explore the possibilites of the universe in meaningful ways. It's about listening to what they have to say to us through their music. It's about the potentials of the alliances formed with non-human entities (like the Snake). I assure you, if we do that - provide the space for them (i.e. JUST LISTEN) they will show us things much greater than a furiously downward-spiraling Casey Jones, however rollicking that may be. I could not believe how many people in the arena were talking over this inter-dimensional interface. It was really sad and angering to be able to hear over the music people constantly slurringly proclaim how high they were and who they fucked the night before and 'dude, are you going to check out Galactic tomorrow?' Um hello! Do you not see the band grappling with the a Snake god over there?! Think about it: People's mind-chatter and preoccupation with their own entertainment/personal satisfaction is so powerful, it trumps the scene at the thinning of the veil between worlds. The band was aware of this; they tried numerous ways to get the audience to be wholly present. At times it was real struggle, but when the audience acquiesced, truly amazing things happened.
Phil and his friends playing in Vegas is like Yoda on Dagoba; the white dot in the sea of black. Don't get me wrong: the common folk of Vegas have been so nice and genuine; the business of Vegas, however, is completely dark: it's all about surrendering willpower to personal vice. Vegas celebrates it, exploits it - the roots of your addictions grow just a little bit deeper and the pocketbooks of the business owners expand proportionally. It's about the kind of power that is used to subjugate others in myriad ways. It's totally macho; where the emblems of mighty things like Snake and Flame and Lion and Woman are 'conquered' and arrayed around the elite like grotesque flying butresses on a twisted cathedral. Brilliant that the music-Jedi would come to this place to illustrate what true power and magic is.
Thank you, Thank you, Phil and Friends.

Not sure that I can write with the same passion and descriptiveness of Skullcap and Osha but I fully echo their sentiments - this shows 1st set was the best of my PLF travels, due to the music and song choices I am sure but also driven by the shows energy and the crowds aura, underscored by a swirling pscyhadelia of the entire experience orchestrated by Phil and Trey and team. Not sure I can add much more to what has been written except for 2 things:
1 - Amongst other vivid visuals eminating from the stage, I also saw the ENTIRE crowd huddling/hugging, in what I felt was a prayer for Phil's health and
2 - I have never seen Phil play so violently (?dark) but beautifully - every song seem to allow his bass lines to pierce yours heart and soul to the core - may leave a scar.
Still tapping in to the hidden memories from this show that dwarfed a solid and fun Sunday Vegoose set...this one will be burnt in to my deepest recesses of my skull.

Skullcap & Joshua...
Those are both great reviews. I enjoyed
reading them very much.
Music is NEVER just about notes and songs.
And in particular, the music of the GD
and Phil has a vast web of intentionality
that, depending on the listener, can manifest
as a 'good time' or maybe even...the ultimate
secrets of the universe.
Language is always the finger pointing
at the moon. Thanks for bringing in your
personal poetry which gave us a great
window into what it actually 'felt' like
for you folks to be there.
Looking forward to the tapes!!

The show was great from our spot in front of Phil everything sounded LOUD and clear I could easily pick out each musician though the madness and there was plenty. The place ws packed on the floor. The security guy said about 6500 or so. I came away very impressed with John Medeski, great player. Another nite with Larry has me even more in awe of him, the man is a master of stringed things for sure. Phil and Molo what can you say they are the best. This was my first time seeing Trey upclose. He maybe a little goofy to watch play but he has his shit down and can play. All in All another great nite of music, even if I only knew some of the songs, they were all played with power and drive. It seemed to me Phil was saying Fuck You to cancer and the negitivity this world has to offer. The middle finger he used was yet another awesome band put together by the master. Thank you Phil if this was the last ride around, you did us all proud. Now go kick NYC ass then get better.

Did anyone notice that there was a row of large speakers on each side of the stage below the stage on the floor at audience level? They were just a couple of feet from the front barricade.
It was like Phil wanted us to feel the bass not just hear it.

Canyon said it really well at the end of his post. Not only did Phil look really happy to be doing what he loves with his fine musician friends, but he radiated strength. At the end of Mountains of the Moon he sang with such power and grace...
Hi-ho the carrion crow
Bow and bend to me
Bend to me
Thank you, Phil!

viola was the shizz all... phil had a solo... yea, a solo... after the 2nd verse... it was more due to the fact that trey didn't have a clue what to do, so phil stepped up and kept it going.
and medeski was going nutz after the 3rd verse of viola... I swear he was using his elbows to play the B3... simply unreal...
overall... a good show... not thrilled with trey... I think he's too fast, and he needs to play off the beat, and not in front of it. We be deadheads who like it laid back... he play's like he's all high on speed...
oh yea, jimmy herring is god... ;-)

Well, I'm finally done dealing with re-entry after the weekend, so should share a few brief thoughts.
First thought: REDDY KILOWATT ROCKS.
Phil (aka Reddy Kilowatt) was truly a madman at the Orleans...I've seen a bunch of classic P&F/Q/whatever shows, almost always great shows....but NEVER have I heard Phil be quite so intense, especially the first set, but magnificent all night.
As someone above said, I think this was Phil's "fuck the darkness" show...intense psychadelic energy all night.
Phil was the energizer all night, with funky intensely grooving bass lines that just flippin smoked.
Second...MODESKI!
wow.
Third, Trey's performance was solid, smokin at times, but entirely his own sound..not emulating jerry at all..Trey being trey, but very intense funky wonderful shit.
Larry was clearly amazing, but I admit to losing track of what he was doing too much (I was dancing like a fucking crazy person most of the show, I think I was scaring people)....he was much more prominenent at the festival 12 hours later, in my opinion...
MOLO....well, I love Molo. Always.
Probably nothing special from Molo, as Skullcap said, Molo did not need to drive the band this night, Reddy Kilowatt was intense, Molo just kept things together...again, I thought he was much more important at the festival, when Phil, trey & modeski seemed a bit more worn out (as they should have been).
So this show was Phil & Modeski being SICK, with an amazing performance by Trey as well, with Molo & campbell being total pros...I need another listen or ten.
Songs?
well, baby slipped by me, i thought it was spacy jam...
Ghost> cryptical>other one pretty much set the tone.
First set might be the most intense set I've ever seen. EPIC.
The Crowd deserves mention: LIT. BIG time.
Rock on, Phil, we love you.

I have to give to Molo, He was a mad man at the late show. A driving force of thunder. A real bad @$$!! As far as the rest of band and the music as a whole: my brains are still on the Orleans Arena floor. The whole night. All I could say what the ..., and holy ..., Amazing!! From the opening jam, throu the second set into a crashing down 3 song encore. EPIC, UNREAL.
on a side note although the Festival set wasn't as special as the night show. But I also believe it was what Phil wanted it to be.

What a show! I too left my mind sitting in the 20th (or so) row of the Orleans. The energy from the music combined with the will of the crowd made for an unforgettable night. Far and away the best show of Vegoose for my wife and I, it (along with other Vegoose festivities) added 10 years to our marriage. Keep it Phil and Trey and give us an excuse to leave the kiddos behind and boogie in Viva Las Vagas!

One For The Rose
Author: Ryan Adams
Official Appearance:
N/A
Unofficial Appearance:
48 Hours -- Ryan Adams
Played Live:
Lyrics:
This one's for the rose
Beaten by the rain you fall apart
Held out for a boy
Colors greater than the sum of all your parts
Is that you?
If so, what will you blossom into?
When you're only pretending you can grow
Flashing smiles
Your roots go underground and spread for miles
In the dark
Unexposed
Yeah, this one's for the rose
The night, it has a million eyes
They followed me, to my surprise they closed
And opened up for you
May you go before your colors learn to fade
Forever new
To wonder what someday you'd one day blossom into
Yeah, gone but something I would only know
In fading lights
And I was just your distant star or moon
To far away
Where nothing grows
Yeah, this one's for the rose
