Saw Zappa sideman Ike Willis with the outstanding Zappa cover band Object Project at Martyr's last night. This group never gives a bad show. Came late in the first set but heard a killer version of Zappa/Beefheart's Abra Kadebra.
The second set smoked, with a lot of killer jamming on some more obscure Zappa material. Stand outs were outstanding renditions of Stick It Out and Cyborg from Joe's Garage, as well as a spot on Peaches en Regalia.
When this crew rolls through your town, check them out to get a big heavy dose of Zappa goodness, played by one of the key players from the 70s and 80s and a killer band of Zappa-philes.
Object Project, Project Object, you say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to...
How'd Ike look? Rumours are floating around that he's developed a crack habit and that's what kept him off the Zappa Family Reunion tour.
Ray White and Ike were the Best. I loved the Zappa shows with these two.
F*uck. If Ike has a Crack habit I'm going to be pissed. Too much talent to waste on THAT drug. God damn that shit to hell. Really.
Ike's not on Zappa Plays Zappa tour because he and Gail Zappa despise each other. Gail doesn't like Ike because he didn't pay Gail to use the Zappa tunes from Project Object.
Well, I can't speak about Ike's habits. I do know he likes to party, but that doesn't mean anything.
He didn't play as much guitar as the last couple of times I've seen them, but he seemed very much sharp, with it and healthy. His solos were sweet, even if they were kind of far apart.
If he does have an addiction, hopefully he can get help. But I saw no signs of it on the stage.
I know a couple of huge Zappa fans that went to Martyr's and neither had very many good things to say about this one...
