The bald-headed guy who played trumpet in the jam following Fire on the Mtn looks like the guy in Max Weinberg's band on the Conan O'Brien Show.

They did it.

The musicians of PLU caught the lightning that draws us all back to this music again and again.

The most noticable thing about the reunion gig as compared to the 11/8 gig with Phil was the evolution of the bend from followers to leaders.

Phil has been the locomotive pulling our tribal train for a while now, and he deserves his rest. I don't know, but I been told when the Phil don't pull, his band carried that load - that was the thing about last night. Crawled from my hotel room to a public library to get this down while the buzz and memories were fresh.

Funny thing that the guitar players flipped sides in both bands. That the best way I could think of from being known forever as the guy on the left :-) And they seemed to have formed a real band type format with Lord Henry keeping rock solid rhytm in the first band while Louie warbled around like a waterfall. Not to say that the Lord didn't throw out some tasty licks - especially when Lou was singing. Oh yeah! The dudes in the band did the singing with Lizzie - and they were good. It worked just right.

And what's up with Dashiki Joe? He was in the back left of both bans, rocking on drums and percussion and smilin big time all night! Joe kept throwin out the Love Bombs all night -sending out waves and streams of vibe all night. The whole percussion was rock solid and in the pocket all night, but Joe? That dude is on a special frequency that radios don't pick up.

Liz was stunning and filled the room every time she sung. BOBBY MCGEE!!! OMG I have heard so many lame wanne be female vocalists deliver a whiter shade of pale with this tune, but Sista Lizzie did the song up. It was the first time in my life that I wasn't comparing this tune to the Janis version - I was too busy keeping up with the energy coming off the stage to be thinking ANYthing last night.

Library police crowding in (perhaps its because something in this room smells like bud?, so I will wind it down with a some words about Ethan Franzel who kinda has some Garcia body language on stage and has glasses and graying beard. Ethan was the leader of the band with band 2. He did nothing overtly - it was a vibe thang. Greg was shiny and rockin all night, but the Rockin Rabbi (the guy on the right:-) did a nice job of singing and casting a mood. The set list for band two was definately the type of emotional tribal ritual with a theme and catharsis that Mr. Lesh talks about when he puts a show together.

The best explanation that I have been able to convey to non DeadHeads about why I still participate in the tribe is that a the end of a Trip to Deadsville I feel the same sort of centeredness that some people seem to get from church. The second set's story of missing Jerry through the celebration of Shakedown Sunshine and the remebering that if we are here in the China Cat Dew zone, Jerry has never left us. Sweet!
It made it fun to just dance out for the encore and crawl into bed before dawn. Thank you for a real good time.

Do it again!

Grateful greetings, Gang!! Wow, wow, and more Wow!! What a wonderful night! Thank you all for your kindness and support! It was a super evening and it just cant be done if the musicians are not in the groove AND the audience is not in the groove! the vibe so flows back and forth, and man, was it flowing friday night!

Rob, thanks for all of your hard work in helping to book the place and keep things running so smoothly! It was a blast to have you join us on the encore as well! Woohoo!!

Rich, thanks for all of your hospitality and hard work too! the cards and promo were terrific! Your chops on birdsong were grateful! By the time you got to the last refrain, you were in da zone, kickin it!!! I would love to get some of the posters from you, if you have any extra!!

It was personally one of the most rewarding nights to look out and see my darling, M'lady Darilyn, M'Lovely fiance out in the audience digging us! And all my fine philly friends, came to see us last night (okay two or three nights ago), including the amazing EZ...Yes, the line was Settle down easy, Jim!! Andy and Joan, Eric so in the zone we werent even sure you were physically there!, Bobby Faye, Twirlin Tommy and Corrine....The amazing Marc P. and Kate! Wow, thanks for being there again, my friend!!

I am again saddened by the fact that we didnt have enough time to interact with all of our fine zoner friends!! MSG Man, you rock!! Thank you for suggesting that I go over with you to ask Mark Pender to play with us! What a kewl kat, and that might not have happened without you! I'll never forget that conversation! "Thank you! Yes I will!" was his wonderful response!
He was soooo much fun during his set, and it was such a treat and honor for us to have him play with us! As Lizzy said, we are such a lucky bunch! And wow, can that Krazy Kat blow horn!! woohoo! That Bobby Magee sent shivers and goosebumps through me when i listened to it earlier!!

Lizzy you rock so much on vocals and vibes, and stage presence! Again, that Bobby Magee was unbelievable, and the entire night was just amazing behind your sweet, driving songbird heavenly voice! You know I could go on and on and on!!!

Brian, I love ya man! It was terrific to meet your Dad this time, and I missed you from nov. 8th til jan 19, and now again!! Til we get together again, my vibe phriend! Your keys are phenomenol, and it thrills me to be able to play within eyeshot and earshot of what you do!!

Jerry, what can I say!! It was such a treat to be keepin time with you, man! It was terrific to be able to play two sets with you, after not having the pleasure at all back in November! As Don Kerr said up above, in the pocket and tight all night! Woohoo!! Anytime, anyplace, would find my way to where youre playing to play along!

Anders, big time thank you for Philling in! An almost impossible job with such big shoes to phil, and yet, there you were! the cd of the first set sounds truly amazing, and i know youre gonna love it! The bass leading us around, and dropping some awesome bombs along the way!! woohoo!!We are a lucky group!! Looking forward to playing with you again in Splintered Sunlight real soon!

I dont know where to begin, or where to stop when it comes to our talented, gifted guitar quartet! Lord Henry and Louie Boom Boom Lardo...it was really a treat, since i did not get to play with you guys last time! What wonderful spirit, and vibes all four of you engaged in all night! It was awesome being able to look up and see Tom right in front of me wailing away, and trading licks with Louie! And Louie, you were perfectly in my line of sight as well, so all i had to do was glance up! I could connect with what both of you were playing all night! Rich, you added wonderfully classy key contributions the entire set and it was grateful!

Greg and Rockin Rabbi Ethan, man I love you guys too! You know its true!! Happy, happy reunion, brothers! What grate stage presence you both have! Its like I wouldnt know where to look if i were out in the audience!! I cant wait to hear the second set and the encore! I will be returning the first cd to greg soon! Thanks, greg, and louie and ethan, tom and rich and lizzy and anders for all the extra work you put in on the set lists, keys and harmonies and such! It soooo paid off!!!

I am so glad we did the janis tribute with Bobby Magee, and thanks to Mark P., and our other musical guests for joining us! Richie, from P-Funk, Shakeit! shake it! Richie Nagan!! And Rob...we will get up on a monday night sooner than later!!

I am sorry we didnt get a chance to grab ahold of Don Kerr and get his fine chops on stage! You can feel the power in his voice when you talk to him! Absolutely next time, Don, and thank you soooo soooo much for the kind words above! Truly moving and inspirational!!

I have so many wonderful memories of that night, but of course, a few stand out for me! Being able to deliver a donor rap was perhaps one of the kewlest things i've ever done! It was totally spontaneous, I assure you, as it hadnt occurred to me before doing it. And as i was doing it, I just kept imagining Phil smiling on the entire rap, in an encouraging and proud sort of way! I hope it was audible....! I have to say, the next night at the American Beauty Project, I bumped into Rob Baracco, and I told him I had done the donor rap in Phil's honor! He smiled at me, extended his hand, and shook mine! Wow!!!

I was also incredibly happy to be able to sing a signature verse of He's Gone! Hope I didnt put too many ears out!! hahaha! But not only was my 9 mile skid line in that verse, but I bought my baby a smile, smile, smile hoodie at our first fest this past summer, and got to sing that part too!! (Thanks for your wonderful help, fair Lizzy!!)

I am so grateful for the wonderful opportunity to play with the best, talented, cutting edge group of lucky phriends in the country! Please, dear fans, keep us going! Do not let us rest! Book us, book us, book us! or at least encourage us to book ourselves!! I have sent a few emails off to a select few summer festivals! If anyone has any contacts that might be helpful, let's do it!!

We simply must mention how much we missed not having Phil there! I know there have been a few comments about sounding more relaxed or whatever with out Phil there, but those are just audience observations, which i must say are slightly off the mark i that respect, no disrespect intended! We are the second luckiest group of folk ever (after Phil, who will tell you so himself!), to have played with Phil once, and we are all praying for a second opportunity as soon as possible! If not us, who?! If not now (or soon), when?! And to our wonderful brothers, John Somerset and Sundawg and Gon Amir...as wonderful as the evening was, it was noticeably to us less than if you had been there! All of your support and help before the gig, and your good vibes the night of were gratefully appreciated, and we eagerly await our next rendevous!!

Oh, I did miss a more substantial set break, especially before the double encore...how grateful was that....more than one song encore at a dead show....love it! and the length of the whole evening! And we should have bowed!!!! All things to look forward to the next time!! And how about a mini tour! We love new york!!! But we need to put something together to take it on the road a bit, eh???!! Woohoo!!! That's it for now, not perhaps everything I wanted to say, but a good start...More later! Peace, love and good karma to you all!
Gratefully yours,
Dashiki Joe

DJ, your positive and ecstatic energy is just BEAMING from your words above!! It's contagious!! Thanks for posting such a detailed and heartfelt review, and for being such a positive presence wherever you may roam.

I LOVE the idea of a PLU alumni tour!! Being a Left Coaster, I'm partial to some NorCal appearances -- maybe at West Coast Zoner Jam 1 on 6/2/07 in Windsor, CA...
