The Starship brightened up an otherwise gloomy day with a free lunchtime set sponsored by Microsoft... Corporate bullshit, no doubt, but I for one am happy to see Kantner and crew getting paid, and putting on a solid, fun set to boot... Lineup was Kantner, Prairie Prince (kickin ass!), David Freiberg, Slick Aguilar, Chris Smith, and two female singers (Diana and Darby?) doing the Slick schtick... The older female singer was kinda cheesy (playing air guitar and shit, sheesh...) but she had a decent pair of pipes. She sang a nice Law Man. The younger one to my ears had the better voice and was nice eye candy to boot... Set kicked off with Volunteers, and included (in no particular order) White Rabbit, Get Together, Ride the Tiger, Wooden Ships, Crown of Creation, Somebody To love, some Freiberg song, a newish, surprisingly decent song called Hyperdrive, the afore-mentioned Lawman, a nice encore jam on The Other Side of this Life, and no doubt a few that I'm forgetting. Sort of a hard-rocking mid-70's Starship sound. The band sounded tight, Paul looked good despite his terrible combover and questionable fashion sense (black stretchpants?)... His first verse on Wooden Ships was kinda wobbly but his guitar playing was solid...
Ths show brought out the usual motley crew that you get at a free show in the city... Equal parts yuppie lunch break crowd and homeless crackheads... There was some drama when some weird punk dude carrying a sign that said "this is capitalist bullshit, what happened to the 60's" came through the crowd, got a laugh from the band, but some audience members took that shit a little too seriously and grabbed his sign, ripped it up, and almost started a fight (ironically kind of hammering home his point!)...
There was Microsoft Cosmonauts doing funny moon-gravity dances and giving out free posters and shirts...
It was a capitalist bullshit, no doubt, but it was a fun diversion... And the Starship sounded better than I'd hoped... I'd even pay to see them (not too much but maybe 10$)...Got a free t-shirt too!
Also, FYI, they were hyping a show at the Sausalito Wine Festival in September w/ It's a Beautiful Day and Quicksilver... Should be worth a trip across the bay...
thanx for the review. would have liked to have went. I am a long time fan of all things "Jefferson". Good to hear good things about Kantner & crew.
thanx for the review Brian
