Honkytonk Homeslice
Assembly of Dust
The Independent, SF
February 15, 2007

Great Great show! Two bands, three sets, $15! That kind of math makes it the show of the year!

The show was first set HtHs, second set AOD, Third set...the Joint Set!

The first and most important discovery of the evening, Scott Law's new beard! It doesn't take much to make me happy...a beard and a sweet guitar are enough! Sorry Bobby Lee...you were only the man of my dreams for a week, it was a good week though.

the set progressed nicely, it started off mellow and grew--although, even in the most energetic spots, it was still a mellow set. The crowd was pretty good, respectful of the music. Scott switched it up playing acoustic, electric and mando. By the end of the set Billy switched to bass (and then dobro) and Dan Lebo had joined in playing lap steel.

The setlist included vintage cheese, stuff off the new album and stuff that was newly written. This set had a lot more picking that what I've seen in the past, it was awesome! Scott and Bill were like two kids racing each other...who can go the fastest! That's what I like to hear! and it seems Jilian's volume was turned down even further than the last time, really helped take the edge off, it sounded great!

Setlist:
Shot in the Blue
Burn it Down
One Step Closer (with some awesome picking, nice extended jams!)
Love is Like a Train (it keeps on rolling)-- one of the new tunes, more great picking!
Lonesome Pines (this is about where Lebo hit the stage, and stayed for the rest of the show, he was a great addition, the lap slide really added to the mix beautifully!)
Las Vegas
Another River
Why You Been Gone So Long
Lost All my Money but a $2 Bill

Definitely stuff missing from that list, the set ran 1:20-1:30, so much great picking, seems like every song was longer than the last time I saw it!

Up next AOD! They were great! and again, I feel like they extended the songs longer than the last time I saw them. Reid's got a distinctive voice and he writes great songs, they're definitely on the pop side, and pretty radio friendly at four minutes but this set was full of extended jams, nice long spacey boogies! The crowd was loving it, it's still pretty mellow but it got the crowd going. I'm thinking of BOTB calling RRE 'music to soccer mom by', AOD has the same feel. It's comfort music, it was one big warm fuzzy hug!

Setlist:

Stone
Sinner
Samuel Aging
Paul Henry
Lone Tree
Telling Sue (this is the one I'm still singing today!)
Harrower
Lost and Amazed
Man with a Plan
Westerly
9 Pound Hammer

I really like the keyboard player, he's got a very clean sound, the clarity of his playing is Hornsby-esque.

Then it's on to everyone's favorite...the Joint Set!

Started it with Comes A Time (which is what I was calling...that makes me 2-for-2 this week...got bobby with TLEO too!)

A FOZ (friend of the zone) says to me he really likes the Johnny Cash-June Carter thing Bill and Jilian have going on, I agree, they're so cute together, as if we cued them, the band goes into Big River.

Next up, an old Strangefolk tune "It's a good song, playin' on the radio" yean...it was a pretty good song, ended with one last CAT refrain. Absolutely beautiful! I really wanted to hear that one! and then they ended it with Up On Cripple Creek.

With virtually no practice, the Joint Set was awesome, I can't wait to hear what's happening by the end of the tour. They're up into the Pacific NW and then back to Colorado to finish it out. I highly suggest you check it out!

I stuck around after the show and got my HtHs album signed, I definitely felt silly but I just couldn't resist Scott and his beard! I might have gushed a bit :-)

>>>Lost All my Money but a $2 Bill

Assuming it's the traditional, the actual title is Long Journey Home

Lost all my money but a two dollar bill
Two dollar bll, boys, two dollar bill
Lost all my money but a two dollar bill
I'm on my long journey home

Cloudy in the west and it looks like rain
Looks like rain, boy, it looks like rain
Cloudy in the west and it looks like rain
I'm on my long journey home

* Refrain

Black smoke a-risin', and it surely is a train
Surely is a train, boys, surely is a train
Black some a-risin', and it surely is a train
I'm on my long journey home

* Refrain

I hear the train a-comin', and I'll soon be gone
Soon be gone, lord, soon be gone
I hear the train a-comin', and I'll soon be gone
I'm on my long journey home

* Refrain

Homesick and lonesome and a-feeling kind of blue
Feeling kind of blue, lord, feeling kind of blue
Homesick and lonesome and a-feeling kind of blue
I'm on my long journey home

* Refrain

It's dark and a-rainin' and I've got to go home
Got go home, boys, got go home
It's dark and a-rainin' and I've got to go home
I'm on my long journey home

* Refrain
