Celebration in the wind
Open the doors, let the show begin
Come like lightning, come like rain
Come on the double with your ball and chain
Come with your trouble, your sweat and strain
Check 'em all at the door with your grief and pain

Celebration, like days of old
When everything was solid gold
Silver, diamonds, pearls and wine
Blood and roses, both yours and mine
Sunlight shining on a midnight line
That opens and closes like a holy shrine

Let a fresh wind tear through your soul
Swallow your sorrow and deliver you whole
Give you reason to believe again
But finish that prayer before you say Amen

Celebration, one on one
Hold your judgement till it's done
Until the last wheel is spun and still
The final sunbeam sets on the hill
The curtain not only fallen but burned
The very last lesson studied and learned

Celebration, the ball's in play
There was never no yesterday
Just one time the spirit moves
Proving whatever the spirit proves
Nothing to win and nothing to lose
Stepping on nobody's blue suede shoes

Let a fresh wind tear through your soul
Swallow your sorrow and deliver you whole
Give you reason to believe again
But finish that prayer before you say Amen

You say there's nothing left to celebrate
Just stolen elections, corruption and hate
Come come on let the good times roll
It means more now than you'll ever know
Begin again, don't you ever give up
Tryin' to fit the ocean in a six ounce cup
Begin again as though the world will hear
Speak your truth both loud and clear

Speak it like a beast howling in the wind
Speak it from the heart like an innocent child
Speak it from the mountain, speak it from the plain
Speak it like the whistle on a northbound train
Speak it with honor, speak it with pride
Speak it from the meadow by the riverside
Speak it from experience, speak it from fame
Speak it from the gutter with an unknown name
Speak it from the rooftops of the town
Speak it from the tenements tumbling down
Speak it from the podium, speak it from the stage
Speak it from the prison in tones of rage
Speak it in the tongues of gods and men
Say it, say it, say it, say it again
Speak it from the pits or from heaven above
In celebration, baby, speak it with love

Celebration, you know it's true
There was no one until there was you
You say where, I'll say when, we'll
Get it together and begin again
Like recognition of lovers and friends
In celebration that never ends

Celebration - in full sweet swing
Of everyone and everything
That causes hopes and dreams to rise
Bringing love light to your eyes
Bringing laughter to your heart
Celebration, let it start

Let a fresh wind tear through your soul
Swallow your sorrow and deliver you whole
Like a breath of summer in a winter land
Blowing rhythm so simple, hearts can easily understand

Awfully tired folks...sorry.

1st set was ok. Not great. All the momentum gained from Shakedown went down the tubes with Stagger Lee.

2nd set was right back to last night. Lovelight>Uncle Johns felt like 35-40 min. Dark Star jams/teasers throughout the night. A setlist that even Bucky could love. And played to the hilt.

More later.

Night night.

Wizard is doing sound for these shows

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By A Wizard (Bcrawford) on Saturday, September 27, 2003 - 11:28 am: Edit Post

For me Thursday was the best so far. That is not saying Friday wasnt good, but Thursday was one of the best shows Ive evey seen, so Friday suffers a little bit in the comparison.

The first set was fun but it didnt come close to the focus and intensity of the first night. The highlight was probablly shakedown street. Its tempo was much faster than the one at shoreline. I was a little disapointed they didnt jam it out more though. I was in the mood for some funk.

Second set started out with a good love light. The jam went from fast to slow then to fast tempo again. The beast was being awakened.

Uncle Johns band was next. Very tight version. The guy right behind me was up one level and he kept hitting me in the head with his cammera strap. I turn around and I see he is knocking over my beer with the strap as he is pulling it away. I reach for it but it spills on him anyway. He grabs the beer and shoves it at me all pissed off thinking I spilled it on him. I try puting it back up there but he shoves my hand away and says, "Quit spilling your beer on me!". My anger was rising and I was just about to snap back with a pissed off comment when the band sings "Whoah-oh what I want to know-oh is are you kind". All of a sudden my anger seems petty and washes away. It almost seemed like a moment designed to teach me a lesson. It seemed more poignant at the time than it probabbly sounds now.

Anyway, The UJB jam was great. Phil is really gainning energy. Then St Stephen. This was the highlight of the set for me. Not because it is a "breakout" song, but becuase it sounded so damn good. Lots of energy and the band finds themselves in some MAJOR grooves. This is what music should be!!!

The next highlight for me was Viola Lee Blues. Killer version. My girlfriend was getting tired (she rarely gets stoned, and the people around us where being very generous), so we went up to the balcony right before this one. Up there the sound was actually less muddy and I could hear each instrument clearly. I felt the floor was a bit oversold. I had a hard time finding room to dance.

The set closer was "Golden Road". Great rocking version. I can't belive this wasnt a number 1 hit in the sixties! What a great song and they rocked it out.

So all in all a good enjoyable show who's only crime was comming the night after one of the best concerts I have ever seen.

PLQ is unquestionably one of the best bands to ever have played.

One quick note on the ClearChannel employees who are working these shows. I saw them being really rude to alot of people and where also minorly rude to us as well. Maybe they are overwoked but they seem really frazzeled and tense. Not all of them but many of them.

As it should be.....

I can't for the life of me understand the mentality that makes some mediocre song a highlight in someone's mind just because they never saw it live before.

Bucky,

most of the time I agree, but every so often you get the new breakout of an 'ok' song and it is cool...

Example is the first I fought the Law in Richfield (94?). That was a fun show with a cool capper. Granted the novelty wore off quick with that song's over-abuse, but we were walking out to the parking lot glowing about the show and the 'cool' new encore. Within a few weeks we were cursing that song.

peace,
Chris

So glad that the 'Q' (I like that new nickname) is kicking ass. makes me even more mad that I can't do chicago with my friends.

Lets not turn this into "Review Bucky's Comment Thread"

thats better.

M.D., saw the shoreline show last week. PLF duplicated 3 songs (shakedown, stagger lee, uncle john's) and in every instance, every single note was vastly superior to the preceeding weeks performance. no question about it.

really good show.

Jimmy was on fire. Shakedown was sick, Jimmy was shredding it up. same with Uncle John's.
Doin' That Rag was wonderful, they really got this one percolating. i thought for sure it would end the set but they stuck around for a 1000 Stars that i felt was sloppy for the first/main vocal part and then went off the hook (as the kids say) during the the big wind out instrumental section.
the Lovelight was 22 minutes (UJB was about thirteen) and got way out there. i thought they had already "come back" to it once when they blasted off again and then returned. heady stuff for sure. the Stephen was over the top and just as muscley as all hell. the Millenium jam took me by surprise and then the Eleven gave Jimmy more chances to rip it apart.

my only couple of complaints:
Again & Again: not a bad song, but please watch the placement. definately a momentum killer.
Stagger Lee: again a bit of a let down from the killer Shakedown. wouldn't have missed it if it wasn't played.
Viola Lee Blues: wished they would have introduced it sooner and let it weave thru a few other songs. otherwise no complaint at all. it sounded like they were going to do China Cat before they fell in to the Viola. and then during a section of it they sounded like they were playing China Cat sideways.
Celebration: low energy in the encore spot. but, we won't have to hear it tonite.

bold unpopular prediction for tonite:
everyones favorite hometown "percussionist" will show up and demand to sit in. i ain't naming names.

Fantastic show last night, a little too much for me to handle, it happened so fast, by the time low spark came around the band was way ahead of me and I couldnt keep up.
highlights:
CASEY JONES>>>>the ending kept going and going and pumping up a new level each time, you'll have to hear this one. huge SHAKEDOWN and rip roaring psychedelic RAG. Spacey Time warp LOVELIGHT and the UNCLE JOHNS BAND made of pure light. waawawawawwa!!! STEPHEN>AGAIN>ELEVEN and then that was it for me. Never saw people dance so hard at a PHIL show, thank you Golden Road.

God Bless Adventure Nation

Chill Taperrob......

Any time somebody says something like:

>>>>if i was forced to think the way you do, i'd kill myself.

The last thing they should be doing is picking on somebody else's comment.

However, there are two kinds of people at Dead shows. Well, way more than two......

But, there are people who just listen to the music & people who want to hear songs & judge the performance by the songs played, not the level of playing.

When somebody says "'No More Do I' was the best song on NYE" I know it wasn't because they were listening to the PLAYING.......

Now, TAPERS, they CAN (not ARE, but CAN) be an odd bunch, and I think MANY would freely admit as much. Some I know have told me that that their big concern at a show is taping & they can listen to the show afterwards.
On 10-15-00, the guy next to me was taping. He listened to the Mets for 45 minutes on headphones while P&F with Greg Osby did Jam > Morning Dew > Jam with Dark Star & TOO > Soulshine. I kid you not.......

As for 'listener'bucky, if you can be 'taper'rob, I can be 'listener'bucky, can't I?

I have a (well deserved) reputation for being a little, uh, anal about LISTENING at shows & getting upset at things like talking or even being touched during the music.

If you want everyone to know you tape shows, why can't I want everyone to know I listen at them?

Doing that Rag was monster...Rob went huge with the organ...they were tapped into the funk on that one. Dark Star teases all night...I bet we get that one tonight.

The sound from the balcony is vastly superior to the sound on the floor (and you don't have to deal with the balcony being oversold, I think this is what stressed out a lot of the employees.)

Molo is so key to the difference in sound and intensity when comparing the The Dead and Phil and Friends (no, I will not call them the "Q". What did your ticket say on it?) Molo is an eight armed samurai octopus rhythmic mind fucker...he and Phil could put out a Drum n' Bass album and it would rock. It's like back in the day when Mickey left and Kreutzman was able to really control the grooves...Molo is just a total percussive demon, I couldn't believe some of the time changes and fills he would pull off.

I agree that there were some oddly placed buzz kill songs here, but I love Beautifully Broken and Welcome to the Underground. I called the Celebration encore and was heading for the door...I don't know how many times I've seen that encore...pass.

Dark Star teases all over the place for sure, especially out of/meltdown section of Lovelite. it will be sweet tonite.

Molo is key. he would play an extra punchy roll and warren would be right on him bringing it up a notch to keep pace. and he sings too!

where is everyone hanging before the show today? would like to place some faces with names.

"bold unpopular prediction for tonite:

I think people are so down on Mickey in the philzone becuase he said such rude things to Phil during their falling out. Yes Mickey can be an arragant asshole, but he is a great drummer in my opinion. I love his percusion style.

Flame away...

>>When somebody says "'No More Do I' was the best song on NYE" I know it wasn't because they were listening to the PLAYING.......

going back to your original comment, how can you know what a person is thinking when they say a "mediocre" song, by your standards, is a highlight for them? first off, it may not be a "mediocre" song to them. and you dont know what they are thinking, or doing, or feeling, at that moment. and its all about being in the moment at any show. and its the music which makes the songs which makes the moments happen for everyone.

if someone says the "NMDI was the best song on NYE", or for any song at any show, why cant you just accept the viewpoint as their own, because it is their moment, not yours. if you were at the show, you may have reason to agree or disagree. but a lot of comments i have seen you make here are for shows you have not attended, only listened to, if that. most recently, the Dead shows.

if i say the best China Doll i have ever heard was the one Joan sang at Camden, that is my opinion, for you dont know what i was doing, or feeling at that moment. but for me, it was a moment that outweighed a lot of other moments where this song is concerned. now if you were there at that show, you may agree or disagree with this comment, but if you were not, and i assume you were not, then you should have nothing to say about it.

but i know what you will say, you will go on about how the Dead suck and that you listened to the show on CD, and how could i even imagine to think that this version of China Doll could rival any that Jerry sang. i have read it all before, Bucky, through all your posts. but you cannot take my moment away, or anyones moment away from them.

as for you being a "listener", i think you have said too much on that front. we ALL know you listen to shows. but did you know i listen too???? as do a lot of other tapers. on the live chat the last 2 nights, i was posting up alot the songs before they were actually getting into them, because i was listening. i even made the China Cat mistake because i picked out the China Cat riff well before they got into the Viola. the Millenium jam, no one around me in the place i was when it started knew what it was, but the tapers i was around did, because they listen.

be happy, Bucky, for YOUR band is back. and thats all you care about. and if i say the Again & Again was a highlight for me, that is my opinion, because it was a moment for me. and if you were at the show, you may have something to say about it. but you werent there last night.

I actually had more fun last night than on Thursday, even though I thought Thursday was better musically. The difference last night was that the whole mind meld, cluster fuck contingent from Santa Cruz decided to do their thing in the hallway instead of front left. The result was I had more room to dance right in front of the stage than I've ever had before at the Warfield.

I would agree with the assesment of (at least some) the Warfield staff being rude. All I can say is, my how things have changed, what used to be family is now a part of corporate amerika. They keep adding stupid rules every time I show up. This time it's having armed thugs guarding the designated smoking area. I had to do my best James Bond impersonation just to get to the 21 Club at set break.

Favorite song last night by far was "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys". My number one all time favorite song, bar none.

Anybody going to the Cal game, meet me in front of the Greek Theater at 3:00

Rob, all I did was commend someone for saying they liked Saint Stephen because it was a musical highlight & not a 'breakout tune'.

And for that, you said that if you were forced to think like me, you'd kill yourself.

Think about it......

It was rather mean spirited to say the least.

So, I messed with your head a little bit.

Calm down.
Go and enjoy the show tonight, OK?

And try to stay off the phone during Dark Star & The Other One & listen carefully.

Prime reason I don't bother posting here too often, even though I've been lurking for a few years and even contributed money to keeping the site up: folks who are so desperate for validation that they feel the need to rank everything they hear on a linear scale, from "worst" to "best," and then defend that personal scale as if it's objective truth, and treat any disagreement as a personal attack. It's just so fucking boring, or is that bucking foring, knamean?

Sick second set. The 1-2-3 punch of the long, ebb-n-flow jamming Lovelight, the tight, fast, exploratory improvs version UJB, right into a concise but powerful St.Stephen topped with an epic Eleven. Sweet.

And even worse when someone WHO WAS NOT THERE feels the need to attack reviewers who were.

It doesn't get more pathetic than that.

Oh, and like folks said above Shakedown and Rag were both great. Rag, especially. Rob wailing away on the vocals, really strong. I like the song Stagger Lee, but if they want to play it after Shakedown, they need to really jam it out hard at the end. They didn't really get there last night, it was an average version of the tune.

>>I can't for the life of me understand the mentality that makes some mediocre song a highlight in someone's mind just because they never saw it live before.

so your commending someone on their highlight is to bash others on how they view their take on their own highlight of a song, a mediocre song to you, but to them a highlight..

who is the one being "mean spirited" here????

Ianni, I was kidding about the "mind meld, cluster fuck contingent from Santa Cruz", but you have to admit, you knew who I was talking about, diddn't you. I actually like them a lot, but last night it seemed like there were about 100 fewer people down front left, which made it feel spacious.

Now about San Hoser, everyone knows we have an inferiority complex :-)

>>I think people are so down on Mickey in the philzone becuase he said such rude things to Phil during their falling out. Yes Mickey can be an arragant asshole, but he is a great drummer in my opinion. I love his percusion style.

Mickey, IMO and in the opinion of many great percussionist is a mediocre percussionist. I have never heard him play without at least one other percussionist. Has anyone? I would love to hear him play trap drums in a band without another drummer, just to hear what it sounds like. I don't think Mickey, or anyone else for that matter can demand to sit in with PLQ.

As for Stagger Lee, I loved it. I think Phil sang it really well, his vocals have to be turned up a bit and, considering that Warren has never played it before, except maybe at the sound check before the show, it was played exceptionally well.

I scored a front row balcony seat aoutside before the show for face value and it was great. Let me rest my weary legs.

Glad to hear you got to finish your beer. Did you manage to find the trash can when you had emptied it?

"Mickey, IMO and in the opinion of many great percussionist is a mediocre percussionist."

My percussionist friends say the same thing. In one sense in agree, Mickey isnt really a virtuoso in any one instrument. What I like about mickey more than anything is his creativity and style. I know he isnt everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoy his playing. (Note: I didn't say I like his singing)

Keith: I didn't know that. I'll check it out. But I do know one thing, if I haven't played a song in almost 4 years, it would be hard for me to remember.

Wiz: I was just speaking to Muruga about how during the drums in the jungle line in Night of 1000 Stars, Mol plays the jungle beat and when I heard the Dead do it the beat didn't change. It seems that the Dead's drummers don't listen to the lyrics. Muruga told me that he asked Joe Morello (who was one of Muruga's teachers) about Mickey and Joe said that Mickey is a great rudimental drummer, but has no soul in his drumming. He won many rudimental drummng contest when younger and playing in marching bands, but never learned how to put soul into his drumming. This is not to say that I don't enjoy his playing with Billy, it's good and he is a great scholar of music and rhythm. But the fact remains, even in his own bands, he his the weakest player.

Holy Crap!
Mickey has no soul in his drumming???!!!
The guy is an embodiment of spirit into sound.
Where are you Hart naysayers from? A glacier?
Mickey has the magic, understands the voodoo, dances with the ghosts and walks with the tribes of earth.
Again we have debate of craft vs. art.
Without vision there is nothing to build.
Mickey is a shaman where most drummers are mere overwound alarm clocks.

Seems that more and more people today either don't or won't understand the sorcery and alchemy behind the greatest art.
Creativity has taken a back seat to academic technique.
Sad.

But raving Mickey-loving is too much.

If you want to hear spirit in drumming listen to Muruga, Molo, Jim Donovan, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, the P-Funk drummers, etc. Mickey writes about spirit but IMO doesn't get it.

Well the Grateful Dead stuck with Hart. After all they didn't fire him, he left out of embarrassment of his crooked father's theft of the band's money.
When he wanted to come back, he was welcomed with open arms and Voila! Blues for Allah, The Make- Believe Ballroom and Terrapin Station were created, let alone what manyconsider the finest year ever for The GD
1977.

Btw, CUBS WIN!

Someone asked about how folks felt about the Dead Shoreline and the P&F Warfield. I really enjoyed the Dead show- in fact, way more than I expected-but the two shows I just saw were much more to my liking. That said, I am glad that I can have both. I would rank the P&F higher, but I still like to have them both as a compliment. Not trying to fence sit or anything. On another note, I actually told my friend during the day yesterday that I wanted to hear the Millenium jam, and they played it. Also, glad to see from taperrob's post that someone else fell for the China Cat ruse at the start of Viola Lee Blues. All in all, it was 2 night's of stunning music- it was like one tremendously long body blow for 2 nights. I never even got to catch my breath! I thought that the level of playing was simply amazing across the board, with song selection being the only real difference between the 2 nights (I lean towards night 1 because I liked the 1st set better than night 2, but both nights had stellar 2nd sets). They had me from the first jam. Viva la PLQ!

ps--sorry to not be more analytical or precise in my comments, but my brain is a bit mushy right now

Hi to you all......again that is...

First of three shows was so fine I slept with a smile on my face...and woke up with one as well in anticipation of another great show. And that anticipation can sometimes be very dangerous as expectations based on first show ere very HIGH!!

Sorry to say ..in my opinion ..the first set was extremely lacking in intensity and energy......I guess first night was a tough act to follow........

Second set how ever was a ROCKER.....great song selection and very well played( perhaps band was just catching there breath in the first set) . Every thing they did was Hot and bursting with energy......Excellent second set!!!

Started off this day by playing Crystal Springs Golf Course down Highway 280 towards San Jose..what a beautiful place!!!! Amazing views of the San Francisco watershed..Bob Cat warnings..CRAZY.

Wonderful Beautifully Broken->Rag->RAGIN'RAG JAM!!!!!

a nice 1st set before they brought the love..

Turning that Love Light way way down..gently working back to the frenzy..UJB had my soul floating mixing and mingling..wasn't exactly ready for Again&Again but looking back it was put in a really good spot.

The middle of the second set during the middle of the run was as fine of a feeling as can be imagined. The joy of what's happened..a lot more music on the way..wish I could go back.

Phil hit the perfect place during his bass jam towards the end of Golden Road IMO..seeing him jam like that on his home turf left an idelible mark it the kindest of ways.

Saw some pretty decent jazz at a place called Foley's afterwords.

This belongs here too...a review of sorts...

It's the second night of the Warfield. I'm exhausted. I have a seat in the balcony and tell everyone I want to just sit there and enjoy the show. I go to Tu-Lan before the show with Bud E Greene and HR Puff and crew....after midyswel hooked me with a brownie (which I promptly forgot about having ate) and a shitake side.

Inside the Warfield and in my seat, it's hot. TOO hot. I slump in my seat and pull the Cyclones baseball cap over my eyes and try to click in. Casey Jones. mmmmmm. I'm too tired for this....the contrast of the lyrics versus my mental state is shooting me to the bottom of the pond. Underground. I wake up for this.

But I need water and so I go to get some. I need fresh air so I go...smoke a butt for the Stagger. I'm leaning all over the barricade, barely able to stand. I'm reminded by a friend that if I'm going to collapse I might want to go home before I make a scene. Now I have this idea tittering around in my head - Leaving. I sit in the lobby, trying to get air. I hear the Beautifully Broken>>Rag transition and go from slumped to jumping out of my skin. GREAT! But that doesn't last long. I'm still tired. 1000 stars. I actually miss Joan.

Set Break -- I know where LT is sitting so I go sit in his seat. I want to talk to him about something but just what I can't really articulate. The visuals are crazy wig and my body is too tired to process. Luckily, Gunner and Jasmin are sitting near LT and so they talk to me for a while. I barely know these folks but they are kind to me....have been since the day before when they were watching my tired ass in the Marriott bar. (Another Story.) I meet Doogles, but I'm apologizing for myself, I'm all shuddery and shakey and contemplating Leaving The Show.

GT shows up first and gives me her ticket for a lower balcony seat...not as hot. THANK YOU GT
and LT arrives.....and I've forgotten what I wanted to tell him. He also thinks I'm edge walking ("do I need to take care of you?") and I feel so self concious and awful that I slink off to my new seat. My neighbors don't want me there....they obviously know I'm in a very bad way ("The lady with the pony tail is sitting here" "yeah, whatever, she changed with me it's my seat now."

and then I remember what I need to tell LT....I bolt out of the seat and run over a few rows to him....we meet in the middle, in the balcony aisle right behind Candace.

It's the creepiness of people. It's our attraction to the taboo and the mysterious. For days I've beeen travelling with an old friend who has now suffieciently creeped me out and hurt my soul....to the point where I can actually articulate that this quest for the Creepy is actually a waste of time.
"Why are we fascinated with the kink and the creep when we have so little time...Ritter and Robert Palmer both gone in their fifties...have I lived half my life? Is time so short, so fleeting? Is there anything more important than just straight up LOVE and CARING for each other?"

and before LT can even formulate a response, they're clearing the aisle...but I feel a million times better bc I've articulated what was in my heart.

And then that set.
LOVELIGHT!!! UJB, Stephen
the answer to the answer man? AGAIN & AGAIN
loved that millenium jam.....and the encore, even.....

"Let a fresh wind tear through your soul
swallow your sorrow, deliver you whole"

it was dead on. Amazing. I wept and danced and hollered and fell over myself. It won't be topped; it couldn't be. I'll see great shows, but nothing will be the arrow to my heart that that second set was.

AND I THANK YOU
LT, GT, Gunner and Jasmin, Doogles, HR, Bud E, Skins, Midy, and the Snizzle too.

The band took me there, but without all of you I would never have made it to that second set.
Forever Indebted.

That all powerful love, that lovelight. You Zoners hold the key. Turn it on, and leave it on.....for the HuckleZoner lost in a SF night :-)

Gee, that's like where I was sitting--to the left of candace--I wondered why the heck all of a sudden there was this distracting discussion going on behind me during the 2nd set.

too bad the ushers didn't move the photographer who insisted on sitting in the aisle blocking my view of warren....

there's really not that many here, but there is one in particular on another board that is out of control. actually using tapes to lure people in to vote for him or something. I guess everyone
needs an identity. this same behavior chased me out of the tapers section many years ago. I really
see no reason for flexing my taping muscles. it's everything the music is not about.
