New Monsoon 3.3.07 Solana Beach, CA

caught the *new* New Monsoon saturday night at the beautiful Belly-Up in Solana Beach, CA. The current lineup is only a 5-piece, gone are Raj on tablas and Brian on congas/percussion. Ron Johnson on bass, recently pulled in from KDTU. what's all that equal? a heavy-handed rock n roll band, much harder-edged than the early organic, acoustic band. Jeff Miller is just ripping the electric SG leads on every song now, "searing" was the word we used to describe him that night. The current band would have a bunch of new fans if they opened up for Widespread Panic in the Southeast, they would not find a lot of new fans playing the Faerie Festivals in the Pac NW... if you get my generalized drift... still enjoyed them, but they have changed significantly from the band I saw in Fall '05.
