lorin rowan's rattlebox 3/22/07 fairfax, ca

in a word, mesmerizing. another word--adventurous.
2nd set particularly so for both.

1st set lots of peeps still having dinner at iron springs pub & brewery--so crowd noise was excessive--couldn't hear too well. unf, I don't have a setlist. one audio taper. one single cam video taper.

doug harman - cello
lorin rowan - acoustic guitar
barry sless - williams pedal steel.

barry broke a string late in the first set and had some considerable trouble getting it replaced.

elements of country and jazz, as well as classical, reggae and improv.

covers included a reworked sugar magnolia (alternate lyrics), stir it up, and waiting in vain.

during the 2nd set, tables were moved and the audience took to dancing. huge jams ensued.

ended about 11:20PM.

'only in fairfax'

Thx for the review.

Would've liked to have attended, but Humboldt's just a little too far away. A couple friends from Marin went, though, and they had a blast.

..also of note: the owner of Iron Springs Pub, Mike Altman, was brewmaster at the Mountain Sun in Boulder for a number of years, his beers are excellent. the pub is on my list of spots to hit next time up in the Bay... and yes Banana [?] on the calendar for 4/4, and then 5/16 Michael Elvin Hunt featuring David Nelson & Larry Cragg

nice spot ya'll got up there! KK

>>>who is this Banana character

info from http://www.vintageinstruments.com/papermillcreekro unders.html

Banana was beginning his career in bluegrass at the same time [early 1960s] but on the opposite coast in Boston with "Banana and the Bunch, Old Time Music with Appeal". After several years in the east coast folk scene, he formed the Youngbloods with Jesse Colin Young. Moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, he produced the first two High Country albums for Butch Waller. He was accompanist to Mimi Farina for over twenty years, played with Zero, Norton Buffalo, Steve Kimock and Friends and currently plays blues with The Michael Barclay Blues Band and old time psychedelic rock with The Barry "The Fish" Melton band and bluegrass with David and Sam Grisman and the legendary Artie Rose and associates.

April is another big month of music at Iron Springs Pub & Brewery. Banana has lined up all star line up of musicians for April 4th. Barry will be back with Lorin Rowan & Doug Harmon on Thursday, April 12th. Just when you thought it couldn't get better, the David Nelson Trio will be returning on Thursday, April 26th with David, Barry, &, Pete Sears. {There is also a correction-David will not be playing with Michael Elvin Hunt on May 2nd.} We are trying an experiment at Iron Springs for the David Nelson Trio show. Those who came out the last time they played knows what a packed house we had and the issues we had with crowd control. For the show on the 26th, we will be charging a $5 cover charge {a first for Iron Springs-all money collected goes directly to the band}. By doing wrist bands, we hope this will help with tracking how many people we have in the building, thus keeping the fire marshall happy. Thank you all for understanding. We look forward to seeing you all. Cheers Maltman
