Just got back from RatBob in Golden Gate Park for Earth Day. Great set from Bobby & the fellas. They played 1 long set for 1 Hour & 38 minutes. Setlist at bottom. Nice work from the Weirmeister. Kenny Brooks always blow, band was tight, they have been doing it more for me the last year than ever before. Sound was excellent in the park, of course.

Great to see G.Dad again, I started this thread in your honor! Emily gracefully blowing bubbles, sun shining, nice breeze, a sweet day in SF. Great to have you Kerstin, Craig, Neal, Dawne, Carloyn, etc.

Sammy Hagar came out and did his thing on Loose Lucy, Bobby said something like "This is a very special day, this is the day the Red Rocker turns green." Someone rapped it up during stuff, but we didn't catch who it was.

Show was billed as the 1st Annual Green Apple Music and Arts festival.

Spinning Frankie for Gasoline?

Yup...radioactive, formerly of spearhead.

He's kind of an asshole in person (which is why he's formerly of spearhead) but as far as rappers go, he's one I prefer...

What a fun day! I'm glad I made it and the sun was shining, I really didn't think I'd be there...

I especially enjoyed the Dear Prudence, after talking about it on saturday (saying I wished left coasting would play it) I really wanted Yonder to do it that night, I'll take bobby's version though :-)

Working on getting the pictures off the camera now ...

In Walnut Creek bunked at friend's Noth Slope Mt Diablo casa..

Fly back to San Diego this afternoon

Classic day today..saw no drunk people..walked right thru middel of field from far back to almost the rail stepping over and or around thousands of people..hundreds of blankets..

Not one person gave me any shit..seereuslee..not one "Hey Man "...saw no hassles of any kind whatsoever..twas that way from when I got here Thursday..Nor Cal is indeed cool..

The soundboard was Ratdogs..Bobby I gather kicked in his crew and equipment for the event..

Zoner blanket..way in back of meadow..seemed in agreement..Great day" and in varying degrees.. "darn good Ratdog set.."

Bobby has dropped some weight..I'd say 20-30 lbs...from when he was heavier

Jack Straw>Cassidy opener very nice...More on show when I get home..

"Spinning Frankie for Gasoline?"
It's actually "Money for Gasoline" a really good new RD original

Lyrics by Gerrit Graham)

Sorehead judge, all red in the face
Say, “John you’re a bum and a civic disgrace"
Caught him asleep in a handicap space
Now he's gonna learn his by-God place

Down Frankie run to court the next day
The law weren't inclined to give her her say
But she wouldn’t quit -- and in the melee
Frankie and Johnnie skedaddle away

CHORUS: (Spin the wheel)
Hit the bricks and run like hell
(Spin the wheel)
Pound the piss out the poorhouse bell
(Spin the wheel)
Dive right in to the wishing well and
Spin the wheel like Ezekiel

(Spin the wheel)
Spin the wheel, spin the wheel
(Spin the wheel)
Spin the wheel, spin the wheel
(Spin the wheel)
Spin the wheel, spin the wheel
Spin the wheel like Ezekiel

Joint in Des Moines, the Lord Baltimore
Fella he’s drunk, has a few more
“Frankie" says he, "You're a cow and a whore”
Now there he is dead in the slop on the floor

A smokeless Colt makes a big old sound
Here come the cops, no weapon was found
They laid that drunk in the potter’s ground
But Frankie and Johnnie, they weren’t around

CHORUS:

John and Frances, Lord they can run
Making good time in the last of the sun
Money for gasoline, liquor for fun
The law is a ass, but love weighs a ton

Frankie and Johnnie - they're lovers, you know
A story so real, just goes to show
Always the same wherever you go
It’s wheels up above, yes and it’s hearts here below

I can "just" see the top of my head in that photo. a little behind Tiny Dancer.

Great show - and a beautiful, beautiful day.

First time for me seeing Damian (Jr. Gong) Marley.

Nice to find my way back to the Philzone, too (a link to the photos brought me here - and then I realized I hadn't visited the Philzone since my computer went weird on me several months ago.)

It did not cost anything..

No one was shut out..

Music started before noon...was over by 6PM or so..

Cant imagine any US city where the bands that played yesterday in Park could have done so with no apparent problems anywhere nor with anyone in attendance..

The sound was good and the weather cooperated..

To clarify...

"with no apparent problems anywhere nor with anyone in attendance.. "

I meant no problem with folks at shows..

No passed out people (cept one guy sleeping with half eaten sandwich mid meadow) no agro vibes..was concerned going in that maybe their would be a "scene"..

Goes to show you don't ever know..

How irrational one can be..

Looking for street parking around Fulton St adjacent to GG Park..

Circled for 20 minutes saw a meter maid and tow truck makin their rounds

I was alone..fully half an hour past 1PM..my wished upon arrival time...

Voila..a spot..sorta..almost legal..on corner 20 something Ave and Fulton..park..get out..look..

Back tire of rental brand new Black Jeep Laredo..fully in red almost blocking the curb cut out crossing walkspace..

Just the day before VooDoo tells how her car got towed from in front of 12 Galaxies the night of Phil's DVD release bash also the night someone got shot outside..her tire was barely in Red

And SageGirl towed also back in the day..Tickets galore..

So..I in haste to get the show on the road..decide to leave car and head into park..

How fuckin stupid was that..

Tow Truck and Meter Maid in the area..

Show over leave park been worryin about it sorta fearing a nightmare on the horizon..

Cant find truck..not sure what corner..Fulton and 21st or was it 22nd 24th 27th..??..

Back end of Jeep stickin out far enuf into Fulton to notice..walked 4 blocks this way turn around walk back nothing..then sorta pause maybe its the east of the stop light..but there is two lights..

Start walkin East..several blocks and..

Sure enuf..there she is..Not even a ticket..

Fuckin Idiot..

Got to the park before Marley. Parking was so easy just south of the Polo grounds that I thought the show might be at Sharon Meadow but I heard the PA upon getting out of my car. Ended up on the right side of the stage for Marley with the dancers. After the set, I was able to easily move to the center for Ratdog.

Ratdog is really a hot band right now. They seem really comfortable with each other, they pay attention to each other and play as a group. Bobby has done a great job of nurturing his band along slowly and patiently and now we all get to reap the rewards, solid, satisfying music.

I enjoyed Sammy singing Loose Lucy, he has a fun-loving, sunny stage presence and has a good feel for the blues. Radioactive's rap really captured the mood of the day. I was the audience member in the crazy green shirt! Thank you Radioactive, you made my day!

Hey Now,

This show rocked and was way louder than Bobby's set at the Not So Strictly Bluegrass festival in the fall. The weather was beautiful, the air was full of our "typical San Francisco mellow air," and it sounded awesome no mater where you were. Bobby and the boys really rocked at this show, I just wish Phil would have made a surprise appearance.

Does anyone know of a Torrent or other download of this show? There were tapers everywhere , but I have yet to find one on the net. If anyone finds one, pleae let me know , as I would love to hear this show again.

PS; I took some great video at this show which I will post a link to in the nex couple o days.
Thanks !

What a great day! My wife was totally on the fence the night before due to the soggy conditions and forecast of rain for Sunday, but I managed to drag her out there and she did not regret it! We got there at 10:30, got an easy parking spot, or so and the meadow was still pretty empty, so we put down a tarp about 15 feet back from the stage. The sun came out and stayed out- couldn't have asked for better weather.

Jonah Smith came out first and played a brief set of soulful, folky originals. Just him on Rhodes and a guitarist who laid down some nice soulful noodling. I was impressed with Smith's voice and his songs were catchy... Highlight was the set-closing "Angel From Montgomery."

Martin Sexton was next. His voice and general stage presence kind of annoy me, and his guitar playing was nothing special, but his band was tight and some of his songs are kind of fun/clever. He closed with a very funky "Will it Go Round in Circles" w/ "I Got a Woman"/"Lovelight" tease that got a lot of people on their feet dancing.

Greyboy Allstars came out and played a seriously funky, tight set. Much tighter than The Fillmore show last night, and great sound. Elgin's guitar impressed me more than ever. I don't know a lot of song names (I do know "Left Coast Boogaloo" was played because Karl D. introduced it), but the Allstars are at the top of their game right now and I would definitely reccomend checking them out. Karl and Elgin even sang some nice harmonies on one song. Not a huge fan of Karl's singing sometimes but this time it worked. One of the best sets I've seen from these guys in awhile (although way too short!).

Stephen Marley came out and did his thing. His band was pretty solid, and his voice sounded good. He mostly stuck to Bob tunes, and as a Bob cover band they were pretty good. His originals were not particularly impressive, although they did bring a kind of R&B influence in that at least broke things up a little. Damian only came out for a couple of songs at the end, including an aborted "Welcome to Jam-Rock," that got me on my feet for a second but was cut short.

Ratdog was great. Their sound was a little muddy at the beginnine (Bobby, Kenny, and Jeff were way to low, all I could hear was Karan, Robin, and Jay), but they got it sounding pretty good after a few songs. Bobby looked and sounded good and the band was in fine form. Sammy Hagar and Radioactive were fun surprises. Bobby even played a mean slide solo at one point (can't remember what song, maybe "Rider")! There were a few rough notes in "Attics" but it was still a really nice closer.

After that we stumbled over to Underdogs just in time to see the last two homers of the Red Sox back-to-back-to-back-to-back rally, then watched the Warriors crush the Mavs and grubbed out on Hawaiian bbq... Pretty damn perfect way to end a rocking weekend! Thanks Bobby and Green Apple for putting this thing on, hopefully it becomes a tradition!

Go Warriors!
