WOW and Yay and OMG and WEEEEEEEE!!! What a sweet sweet show! I've had this one on my calendar for a long time, when I checked in with Rich earlier this week he said not only was it on his calendar but it was circled, oh yeah! So we make plans to go. YAY! and then we make plans with Pauly, who is less than 72 hours off the boat from hawaii...I didn't think it was possible, but san francisco has just gotten MORE colorful! Welcome Home, Pauly! What a welcome he got!
Part way through the day yesterday, we decide that we NEED to go earlier...so we make it happen. We're proud of ourselves for getting there by 6:30! We were still turned away though, SOLD OUT! what? How can that be? Luckily, any dedicated maniac knows that those words me nothing. Rich hit the bar and we had drinks in moments! Five minutes later he comes back with wristbands and we've got a table! Sweet!
By now the place is full of familiar faces, the Budfamily was one table over, some friendly tooboarders are around, MarcB/Digitunes is in the house, Canyon and pals roll in, shit--we were gonna have fun even without the music! Even 2dank was in fine form. Despite the SOLD OUT announcements, everyone got in...as usual!
AND THEN someone whispers pssst: PHIL! huh what? could be? Pete had the keys set up! Soundcheck came and I was ready, I jumped up to dance, sadly it ended too soon. But that gave us time to get some air--met a bunch of young kids from forestville, sweet bunch of youngsters, packing some nice bud, topping it with some (mostly) smooth hash.
Back inside, we're still on Nelson Time--betting the show won't start 'til 10 but glad we got there early--I had some knitting to do. Just in time to get a call from Nancy buzzing on about Phil--I dunno, I hadn't given it a second thought, maybe it's really gonna happen. Well...sure enough...out they come, phil in tow
But before I tell you about the show, you need to know about the beer. $4 a pint! YUM! for $4.50 you can get a Sless Stout with a scoop of ice cream--I just about died and went to heaven!
Okay...now for the music! What a perfect quartet. It was so perfect--no drummer? eh...who needs 'em! FOTD is always sweet with Barry on pedal steel, this was no exception...Dave and Phil traded verses. 1st one's named sweet anne marie (although in my mind it sounds more like Sweeeet Emily), and I happened to be drinking Anne Marie's Amber. Dave snuck in some lyrics that I hadn't heard before--you can borrow from the devil, you can borrow from your friends...
Garden of Eden--AMEN! preaching to the choir!
You don't try very hard to please me, with what you know it should be easy, this could be the last time, maybe the time, I don't knooow
Somehow I get the feeling, it won't be!
Back into Garden of Eden...sometimes we forget we're just people
Worth mentioning, the pub's calendar of events had this listed as 'the triumphant return of the dave nelson trio'...huh. Funny because I noticed it early in the night and remarked that Phil is the only return I've ever seen actually billed as triumphant. The cosmos were trying to tell me something
GDTRFB--not if that road is in Fairfax! Dave did a verse, phil did a verse, the next one was together, phil sounded great, he sang quite a bit. Nice little Bid You Goodnight Jam in there too.
it's a different world when you're...in Fairfax. Hit the sidewalk for a little fresh air, smoked out our waiter Eventually there was smoking inside, mostly by the waitstaff...ha ha ha, fair enough, they scratched our backs, it's the least we can do for them. They actually thought they were going home at midnight--guessed we owed them at least a little toke.
Franklin's Tower and Cumberland...unreal, Barry has the sweet sweet golden touch, and phil was booming right along, these guys are so comfortable with each other--it was smiles and fun all night, the music just floated out, it seemed effortless! For a restaurant, this place sounded damn good!
Phil left us with a nice Box of Rain, believe it if you need it.
Set break!! WHOA--we get more!
Back out to enjoy the warm night air, didn't wear my jacket all night! Found some crayons...made a little picture for canyon, had some help of course...
Second set--could it get any better than the first set? Um...actually, yeah!! DAVE!!! Rocky Road, Wicked Messenger--classics in the dave nelson song book!
The pete ballad, who can say? It's a slow sappy song--about the environment or something? not so keen on the verses...but the jam after...complete spacey weirdness that wins me over!
Peggy-O more of that sticky sweet barry pedal steel. *sigh* it relaxes me just to think about it.
Any Naked EYE!!! oh yeah!! NOW IT GETS GOOD! until dave breaks a string...damn. Just call him two-string Johnny. Thinking it's a wash, I hit the loo...only to come back and see Dave has the broken string replaced and it's on! Not the best Eye ever but they went way out there with it as always...
By this point, it's 12:45 and I really need to get home, but off goes Stella Blue and no one does Stella like Pete, Pauly's got me convinced to stay for 'just one more'...but with an encore like Ripple, it's just not happening, predictable yes, does that matter--NO! Ever tried to pull a hippie away from a Ripple sing-a-long? Even the hardest of hard-hearted hippies melt...
let there be songs, to fill the air
aaahhhh. I feel so good today.
Thank you Dave and Barry and Pete and Phil and Iron Springs and Friends.
Lots of friends, thank you!

Crypticalex was in the house with his big fancy camera, He got some great shots, then you'll really be wowed!
At one point, this guy leans over my shoulder and trys to read what I'm writing--oh no, my notes are top secret, more personal than a 13 year old's diary, not a chance he's getting a peek. I turn to see who it is...JC! D'oh! I told him it was all good. So far. ha ha ha.
maybe
but just a TINY bit!

Thank you Emily! You're a treasure!
YAY David Barry Pete and (last but not one teeny bit least) Phil!
Phil playin' a brew pub! Awesome.
..>>..Any Naked EYE!!! oh yeah!! NOW IT GETS GOOD!..<<..
I believe that might be "It Gets Good Now" a little diddy played first time at Bimbo's 10.27.05
*** Not really a "Song of Jam" a mis-interpreted editorial comment included in post show setlist on review thread of Bimbos show..and placed in err as a song on Philzone homepage Official setlist...
>It Gets good Now..does find its way into every Nelson show..
Thanks Emily...
((((( NorCal )))))
thanks for the review.
wish I could have been there.
great review
thanks emily
Dave snuck in some lyrics that I hadn't heard before--you can borrow from the devil, you can borrow from your friends...
"You can borrow from the Devil
You can borrow from a friend
But the Devil give you twenty
When your friend got only ten"
Emily, this could be your best written review!
Thanks for the review... I can't believe I didn't make it to this show... My buddy (who opted for the Avett Brothers instead) is never going to live this down.
WAY COOL!!! Great review as always, Emily!:-)
>>my handmade zoner card is awesome!<<
Truth be told, Canyon had a great spot right in the middle next to a table...I planned on crashing his spot but figured it would go over better if I came bearing a gift...it's a proven fact that parents cannot resist crude stick figure drawings in crayon
Thanks guys, glad you can live vicariously through a few words.
Don't be a stranger Brian, if ya ever need a ride, there's always someone going your way...
Thanks Emily, I will definitely keep that in mind next time!
damn! because of the nice evening, my bride & i decided to go to the san rafael farmers mkt instead of iron springs.
now the important question: were any taping rigs present?

Emily, I got your text. Thanks for the headsup. That WAS the show I needed to be at but unfortunately I'd drank too much during the Laker game to get in my car and head over there. I definitely thought about it but better safe than sorry especially when drinking.
Excellent, top notch review. (You ever think about submitting them to Jambase.com?) You're the most solid reviewer on the Zone. And like I've said before thank God you write them or I'd never remember where I was the week before.
Not sure about the tapers, there was so much going on, it didn't even occur to me to look.
But Budboy was there, and he takes care of his friends
You would have loved it Rory but you made the right call
No jambase for me though, I'm into monogamy, it's the zone or nothing. Of the people, by the people, for the people, ya know!
YES there was a taper in the house. No need for trickery Em you are always welcome to share any spot I'm in.
>>No need for trickery Em<<
phew, good thing...that's the extent of my drawing ability
you guys make me smile!!!

>>>for $4.50 you can get a Sless Stout with a scoop of ice cream--I just about died and went to heaven!
Quote of the year...agreed.
Great review...sounds like a special night. Glad a good time was had by all...(probably the understatement of the year...lol)
was the band set up on the center street side of the restaurant (next to the windows)?
and ... where did the band hang during setbreak? the kitchen?
OK I'm up now.....
That was insane fun!!!!!!
Thanks EM, Rich and Canyon. I had a blast.
I'm laughing at myself this morning.......
Aparently I had a little buzz on last night and after Emily drpped me off, I took a spill in the middle of 19th ave.
woke up with a little scrape on my hip and elbow.
HA! all in good fun.
Thanks PHIL!!!
Yup, band was set up in front of the windows, although they were closed this time.
Saw Dave outside on the sidewalk at setbreak, not sure where everyone else went.
(((Pauly)))
I'm laughing at ya too!
Better start growing your hair--you should be the first in line for a t-shirt made from your own hair!
yep Phil that's where they set up. Lesh left at setbreak, walked right through our safety meeting, we offered him a jar but he passed saying our stuff was probably to strong for him.The rest of the band had a table in the front, they were hanging there and outside.
Glad to see you feeling alright Pauly you were getting a little stumbly at the end there.
Oh What a Great Time!!!!!!!!
thx -- methinks windows probably taped to prevent a mob from forming.
my one consolation (besides more sleep & a likely case of the "beer flu") is that i saw barry sless at sweetwater on tuesday night 2 days previously ...
(fwiw, that other sless project - rattlebox - is also quite worth hearing ... mellow to be sure, but great textures ... and both rowan & harman shine as brighly as sless, imho)
..>>..probably to strong..<<..
I was thinkin the same thing all last weekend..
Better not..I might not be feelin all that good.. but I ain't feelin all that bad either..
" Lesh left at setbreak, walked right through our safety meeting, we offered him a jar but he passed saying our stuff was probably to strong for him"
That's a good one.
What kind of "safety meeting?"
Oh brother, I'm sorry I missed this...:--(
YEAH EMILY!!!
thanks for the review, glad you westies had such a blast...
you know Nick the Northern California kind
it was really neat Phil, JC and the owner of the club came out the back door. Phil passed on our offer, joked with us for a second and went on his way, he really is a great guy and funny too.

Comment: 1st Set With Phil Lesh
Lineup: David Nelson ~ Barry Sless ~ Pete Sears
Emily,
Great review, and you crack me up - me with my "big fancy camera." It's big and fancy, but I don't know that it takes any better shots than yours does - seriously! Yours look great to me. Haven't looked at mine yet.
I'm really glad I decided to make the hour-long drive up from the Peninsula and the pub's proprietor was cool enough to squeeze me in (thank you!!!). As usual, nice hanging with Rich (your crayon-picture-showing friend and fellow ex-NYer) and you and finally meeting fellow Zoners Canyon and 2dankdan (man, I need to get out more!!).
No, it was a really fun time (man the food and beer were really good) and I'm sorry I had to split before it was all over (I know - it's a sin!). Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to roll into bed at 2 AM last night. The strictly DNF set looks really nice, and I'm sorry I had to miss it, but I'm just really psyched that I was able to see Phil's latest stealth appearance.
BTW - was told that there won't be any "official" Phil shows in the Bay Area in May, as I'd heard rumors to that effect (like Warfield at the end of the month). Next official show is supposedly the festival in NY.

"Next official show is supposedly the festival in NY."
That be OhFicial if you from Canada and it be Phil's OrganEyezation..
Put the chessmen on the board..Spring 07 Bay Area LeshChess game #2 is about to commence..
Supposedly Eh..??..
nice review...thanks for helping us live vicariously!
G.Dad,
You lookin' for more info? OK, shouldn't have been so "cryptic," huh?
How 'bout Phil's publicist? But, who knows? Perhaps he isn't at liberty to give out any definitive info at this point...though I doubt that.
Still, I'll be keeping my eyes open, as usual.
beautious emily!!!
(:
(:
(:
Emily, your review ROCKS -- as did the show, as EM-inently described here. Wish I coulda been there, but it's a long haul from Humboldt. I'll be on the lookout for anybody offering a B&P of the discs.
Sounds like East Coasters could learn a thing or two from NorCal about how to put on a stealth Phil appearance. Well done, folks.
Thanks guys...
It's really not that hard, all I did was tell ya what happened. It's not like I wrote the songs or anything
Yes Alex "twas aboot" time Phil played west of the Rockies eh..??..
Emily..You and Lord Henry should do a Siskel and Ebertesque review dealio..
Zone Reviews..best on the web..you two damn good at it..
Siskel(rip) and Ebert(is he still alive..I hope so)..John Mellencamp filled his chair last Saturdays show..
Phil you lookin good...keep yourself healthy man...
<<<It's really not that hard, all I did was tell ya what happened. It's not like I wrote the songs or anything
lol. it's the delivery
Great review Emily! Almost like being there.
So far. ha ha ha.
Now that's funny!
FRANK!!!
WHEN THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN?
We've been having a lot of fun without, ya know it would only be better with you though!
Here' Some Pics......
The Band:
Phil 1:
Phil 2:
ha! That first pic makes it look like they're in a library
(Ooops, that's supposed to be WHERE have you been frank?)
Here are the real deal photos to wet your whistle:
http://www.minkindesign.com/photo/
Looks like the JCC San Carlos, CA..
Phil did a mid set long sleeve shirt removal..??..
No way..
Minkin was in on it too...
Robert how could you do that to us..
Yeah, beautiful pictures (as usual), Bob!! Really like those black & white ones. They have a certain crispness that the color ones don't. Even the pro was using a flash last night, given the low-light situation.
Oh, and to answer someone's earlier question - yes, at least one person was recording last night. He was right up front with the deck.
Minkin's crowd shots are great. Lots of familiar faces there!!
great review emily, thanks!
How can you resist these beautiful faces:
Especially when there's a smile:
Nice work Mr. Minkin
Love the crowd shot too!
here's something to be jealous of...
a man who LOVES his job!
That's a great shot of Phil!
Look at that first shot of the crowd. In the front row there are three large woman who actually look like they're having a bad time. Check it out they have frowns!
Priceless!
"The Greatest Train Ride Ever"
Phil please get a drummer and take that on the road!
Okay...Someone needs to say it
(second) BEST. SHOW. EVER.
(The Bimbo's show still reigns supreme but this one was close!)
man...look at that smile on nelson!!!!
Damn those are some great Bob shots
Bobbaroooo!
sickO
I love my work its like a hobby I enjoy very very much....
I love not workin more..
Phil...you preachin to the choir with these hugh lapses in performing..
Funny Phil plays we don't work..Phil don't play we work...
Can ya help us out Phil with a few more shows..Please..
Ha..
Everyone there got in..Major League cool...
>> Look at that first shot of the crowd. In the front row there are three large woman who actually look like they're having a bad time. Check it out they have frowns! <<
I think that might be David's wife and a close friend of his. They go to Iron Springs all the time.
There was seereus frowns at GAMH last Sat night...
We were downwind of some real bad air..bad air..bad bad air..very bad air..
On jambands.com there's a brief blurb about last night's Iron Springs show
http://jambands.com/News.phtml?newsfile=redesign_n ews318.html#4-27-21
Phil Joins Some Friends
Last night in Fairfax, CA, Phil Lesh took the stage to support three musicians who have been part of his his Phil Lesh & Friends group. David Nelson, Barry Sless and Pete Sears, who were booked for intimate gig at the Iron Springs Pub, have each performed as a Friend of Phil. Last night Lesh joined the trio during a first set that offered a number of Grateful Dead staples including: “Friend of the Devil,” “Franklin’s Tower,” “Cumberland Blues” and a set-closing “Box of Rain” with Phil on lead vocals. Lesh will next perform at Mountain Jam on June 3 with a roster that does not include any DNB members but instead will draw together Warren Haynes, John Molo, John Scofield and Steve Molitz.
That's not David's wife Muruska.
I never thought of that G. Dad. Since they were in the front row..could it be???
76 posts on a review
the left coasters just lit it up
sweet freakin pics
and thru the posts you can feel the love
reminds me why i started coming here
OUTSTANDING westies, thanks for takin me on the ride with ya
and when dave strings together 4 or 5 shows out there this summer
lmk i need to dial into that shit with y'all
bravo!
Nelson can start in San Diego..or Los Angeles or Orange County..go North to San Fran...Humbolt..Portland..Seattle and bring Phil with him if Phil wants to...a few shows each town..
Is Bill Laymon still sick? Last I heard, he was seriously ill.
David Nelson and Friends..Great American WestCoast Tour..2007..
Saw Bill Laymon on his 50th B.Day 10.31.05 he was in Las Vegas and sat in with The New Riders for a few songs that evening during their set at AT-40 bash..
He looked and sounded real good..got a sweaty hug from him and big time smiles when he exited stage..
AT-40 was a post Vegoose Festival night of revelry commemorating the 40th anniversary of the first Acid Test..held in Palo Alto, California in November 1965. LSD was legal in the United States until October 6, 1966.
Zane Kesesy and the Merry Pranksters along with the new Furthur Bus were in attendance..
It was fun..The New Riders sounded great..
Excerpted from show setlist..
7- Lochinvar +
8-Contract ++
9-Henry +
+ W/ Bill Laymon bass and singing lead
++ W/ Bill Laymon bass Nelson sang lead..
>Is Bill Laymon still sick? Last I heard, he was seriously ill.
second column from the left, there is an article about a recent benfit for him.
http://www.nelsonband.com/
I saw J.C. last night. He said that Bill was indeed quite ill but didn't reveal what it was that he had. He he did say that Phil was playing through Bill Laymon's bass rig last night and that he was helping organise a benefit in Santa Cruz on his behalf. He said that Bill's friends held a benefit last week in Springfield, IL his hometown, but his Santa Cruz musician friends are planning one in June.
I did some snooping and I found this link:

..
Thats too bad..what a nice man..consistently right there with good vibes..
((((( Bill )))))
thanks for the review.....
I refuse to confirm or deny even being in orbit the other night.
but, wait, did someone say there was a show at a BREWERY?
hmmm...'out on the road to west marin'.....
I'm gunna send out $20 for Laymon's Medical Bills..
Lucky duckies....
how bout a stealth Belly Up Phil show....?
Pssst, Emily. David doesn't like to be called Dave.
And, you don't mention Geraldine in your reviews?
For shame...
Bravo !!!!
Being one of the lucky few to be part of this I must say, WOW what a night! I would like to send a special thanks to Mike and Anne, owners of the Iron Springs, for making this night possible.
i thought the show was excellent!!!! seeing phil in a place that holds 105 people is awesome- and what a deal- only $5?!?!!??!!
very interesting hearing them play with no drums to drive the tunes- it made it much looser and they were able to play around a bit more...
if ya don't know, phil's part is up at http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=506225
and check out the second set sometime when you get the chance- phil didn't play, but man they went to deep space 9!!!! stella blue and ripple as the closers???? most excellent!!!
and the whole show made its way here: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=506305
can anyone get this on the archive?!
