What a great show! These guys are officially on my radar, The Dirt Underneath was absolutely perfect, I'm real interested in their rock show now.
It was a nice warm night in SF, so standing in line out front was not so bad...for Buncombe! Thanks a million for securing a primo spot in line and then a table, it made the night even better! This was a partially seated show, with the tables lining the front of the floor, we weren't boot-licking close but it wasn't that far off!
This was my first Truckers experience, thanks to the crash course from Buncombe and Sloboyle, I'm a fan! They even took the setlist...this is the second show in a row where I've delegated the setlist responsibility and it's working out, I could get used to it
From the first note, I knew I was in for a real treat...this tour, being acoustic, is a departure from the typical Truckers sound but judging the crowd reaction, I'd say it was overdue!
The setlist included familiar old tunes, rarities and even a song that was played for the first time! The songs are solid, hearing them for the first time, it really told me who this band is, where they're from, it oozes South from every note.
The songs were everyman tales, workingman's sort of blues, whiskey drinking, gun-toting songs of life. The opening line of Carl Perkins Cadillac summed it up ' Life ain't nothing but a blending up of all the ups and downs'. Sometimes life pushes too hard, in The Living Bubba 'I wake up tired, I wake up pissed', and the time comes to push back...9 Bullets, 'My roommate's gun got nine bullets in it, Gonna find a use for every last one' The imagery is often dark, but I found it to be oddly comical. Box of Spiders ' Gran Gran keeps a box of spiders. She says they're on me when I sleep. Waiting in the out-house for me. underneath the seat.' which was followed by an ad-lib about how the spiders were going to bite his penis and it was going to fall off. and yet, I felt good about it. The darker the songs got, the more I enjoyed it. and I was definitely not alone.
Just got home, too tired to add anything, but here is a correction to the setlist from above. The Opening Act has been played so far, I think, at all the Dirt Underneath shows. The first-time played song from Cooley is called, I think, Lisa's Birthday. I also fleshed out the titles that I/Slo wrote down in shorthand

according to one of these days.org, One of These Days was played after Nine Bullets. To be honest, at this moment I flatout don't remember. I think it was played but can't recall for sure
the website didn't have Heathens listed, which was indeed played last night, but had One of These Days in the same slot instead.
Thanks folks!
Looking forward to the Boulder shows on the weekend. From the get-go, these guys had me hooked with the strength of their songs.
Rider, for me it's always been about the songs with the DBTs, and this format really lets them shine. You are in for it, my friend. The two shows I just saw were impeccable, there wasn't a bum moment in either show. OK, I gotta chill for now. I'll check back in tomorrow with hopefully a more rested brain and I'll have something of actual substance to say about two of the best shows I've seen, well, since 2 nights of DBTs at the Fillmore a year ago!

Spoken like a true fan!
Was Outfit, never gonna change, Dec Day etc... missed?
well, of course I wanted to hear all those Jason songs, but to be honest, there was never a point where I said to myself or anyone else that there was a hole in the show. I certainly went in thinking that there would a gaping hole where Jason was but it didn't turn out that way. I'm stunned to say that, but it's true, at least to me
cool
Thought about this a little more while mowing the yard: other than when others mentioned his name, I just never thought about Jason. And I love him, his songs, his guitar playing, his hats and his shirts, but once the band hit the stage he never crossed my mind
The 2nd night some dude yelled out for a Jason song, didn't hear which one, but Patterson said, "the guy who does that song isn't in the band anymore, but it's a great song so go see him and I'm sure he'll play it," or something to that effect
Funny thing from the San Francisco Chronicle: Tonight rockers Drive-By Truckers headline at the Great American Music Hall, Also on the bill is the opening act The Dirt Underneath
I just talked to a friend who saw the Tuesday show with a mutual friend who LOVES the DBT.
Last year, after being prodded by our friend to see this band, my friend & I saw them electric at the Fillmore and we thought they were good but we wern't blown away; but he thought this weeks show was great, and he's not an easy mark for shows. He said the keyboard player was great and the steel player was right in the groove as well, and overall it had a tighter group sound.
He also mentioned something about the draining of a large bottle of JD on the stage. My kind of guys, I wish I'd gone.
Let the slamming begin, but I never thought Jason was as good a sognwriter as either Patterson or Cooley.
Well, that's kind of like saying Harrison wasn't quite as good as Lennon or McCartney. Among the three, he comes in third, but if you expand the scope to outside of the band, he's better than most.
YMMV.
The steel player is actually one of the original members who has been back in the frey for the past year John Neff.
Lance, funny that your friend said Spooner Oldham was great. He IS great, but he seems to not know the songs very well and for huge chunks of the show he did nothing that you could even hear. I'm a big Spooner fan, especially of all his great Memphis work and with Neil, but he added virtually nothing, and on a few songs he detracted.
John Neff on pedal steel was a monster, but I think I already said that. I sure hope that Neff is back as a full member and not just as a hired hand. On the songs he played guitar he took the solos and was quite skilled. Plus after talking to him a little he seems like a really cool guy. Hell, I talked to them all, except for Spooner, and they really are good people. Haven't gotten all rock star yet!
I loved Jason's songs. For the # he got he made them count. But if you are going to rank them, no one matches The Stroker Ace. Cooley is the man
I agree with your friend about them sounding tighter, and if you can believe it, they even seemed to be tighter with each other than before.
Also, on night 2 some asshat yelled for Freebird and Patterson went off. He was smilin', but he said fuck you about 3 times and told the dude he would kick his ass. He said, "you think it's funny, but it's not." So I yelled, "what about Whippin' Post, " and he just smiled.
Here's a couple of sweet photos of the shows, I got them from
http://alabamaasswhuppin.blogspot.com/ where you can find a lot more and all kinds of DBT stuff. The blogger seems to be excited by the shows as I am and I agree that we are watching our favorite band move bravely and assuredly into uncharted waters.... or something like that

another memory just bubbled to the surface: on Monday I wore my "Keith Richards for President" t-shirt, and while rapping wit Patterson he said he liked it and we should trade. I would have, but his shirt would fit me like a dashiki and mine would look like a bib on him
And you didn't do it?!?
You should have told him a few backstage passes and a TDU T-Shirt in your size would have made it even.
Soundboards for life and the Keith shirt would have been his! And for the record, whatever shirt he had on wasn't as cool
I didn't tell him that he was second on the ticket when I make my "Cooley/Hood in 2008" shirts. Dude, he's way bigger than me, and I'm sure he thinks he should be the POTUS, not the VP, so I kept my mouth shht
went to the monday show, awesome
79 degrees showtime in the western t-loin
wasn't sure the piano player was going to make it - bottle of jack was on stage entire night, but he hung strong and really filled in the acoustic sound
