Did anyone go see Junior Brown in Petaluma 5/9/07 or any other time recently? If so, please review. I couldn't make the show, but I love seeing that guy play his unique style. Junior rips!
I used to see him every Sunday at the Continental Club in Austin for $5. That was back before he broke nationally and he still played small bars. I haven't seen him in 3-4 years but overall I've seen him more times than I can count and he always brings it
Doogs saw him last night. To sum it up briefly what he said: the man absolutely tore up the guitar/slide rig of his but apparently the singing blew goats.
Seriously? One of his best things is that maple syrup and butter voice. Bummer.
His records are kind of groovy, but live he's just too gimmicky for me. I saw him a couple of times a number of years ago and both times I saw him I got turned on to the opening act (the Mavericks at the GAMH & Robert Earl Keen at the Fillmore) but was bored with JB.
I have no desire to see him again.
i saw him several months ago and really enjoyed his show. his guitar playing was first rate and most of his songs were pretty fun & interesting. highlights were "(you're wanted by the police [pronounced "po'lice"] and) my wife thinks you're dead", "south of dallas" and a rockin' surf medley. the drummer had only a snare. we wondered where the bass drum sound came from; it was the drummer stomping his right foot in time. in all, a fun night of honky-tonk, kinda ernest tubbs by way of jimi hendrix.
should be "brokedown south of dallas".
I love his schtick. Works for me!
The problem I have with Jr. is that he hasn't added any firstrate original material since about 1993 when he put out Guit with It. That and 12 Shades of Brown had some great songs but after that it has more or less dried up and he's relied on gimickry and the same old same old.
