Agreed! That Caution was a highlight!

G.Dad...I think you mean Simple Twist of Fate :-) The Dylan selections of the day were also highlights.

That Wharf Rat was way up on the list too!

I even liked the Ryan Adams selection :-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Todd (Toddnet) on Monday, June 04, 2007 - 07:25 pm: Edit Post

Highlights, from Todd Gorman, West County Outlaws:

Mylar-Wonderful, rich baritone voice, great version of 'friend of the
devil' and, oh your band wasn’t too shabby, ha ha

Reefer Canyon-Great vibe, cool to see the young kid drumming, nice tunes
(rescue blues, did you write that?), Great stage presence Timmy Hoover.
The mando sit in was great too.

Lost Ticket, totally dig the hard edge, tension; definitely want to see
you guys again. Good Job. What was that one song ...gonna find my way?
Too Cool. I want the album when it come out soon Doogles.

5 eyed hand-Really enjoyed that nice sound mix, great guitar and electric
fiddle. Oh, and your logo is great. I had meant to grab a CD but they
were all gone, next time.

Left Coasting- Way good, really smooth. Great Sax, keys, guitar. I think
you did a Wharfrat? that was great.

Too Much Fun.

I would like to throw my .02 in here and say Thanks to all who worked so
hard to pull of this party/show, Rory, Canyon, and all the rest, Thanks. I had a great time and am grateful as
well to be given the opportunity to play on the same bill as so many fine
musicians.

I was really suprised by how smooth the whole day went, how talented all the groups were, and how perfectly scheduled and arrangend the band line up was. Professionals couldn't have done it better. The whole vibe was so free and easy, it was in very many ways a return to the 60's. Mylar really out did himself with the 2 drummers, 2 basses and two SG's. I enjoyed the different, more rootsy, vibe that the WC outlaws brought to the festival. Doogs is more badass by himself than all of Danzig put together. Five-eyed hand really got a great sound out of that amphitheater. I loved Left-coasting's Warf Rat and Cissy Strut and That encore group Jam was great, Didn't sound cluttered at all even with the huge amount of musicans on stage.

Thanks so much to all the crowd and musicians for accomidating our little inexperienced project by providing instruments and time.

Zoners Rule!!!!

REEFER CANYON RULES!!!!!
All the bands were top notch. What a great experience!

You guys kicked ass! That Caution was mind blowing, in spite of the techincal difficulties (sorry about that, btw) and I can't remember hearing an Isis that was so inspired unless Zimmy himself was singing it!

Mylar's Allstars!!!!

West County's down home vibe and great vocals

Lost Ticket tearing my head off

Zanardi Churning up the whole place!

Just now getting around to composing my thoughts after my Saturday > Sunday run of high adventure, peaking at WCZJ and winding down at the Melvin Seals & JGB show on my way home to Humboldt. But more about that later...

Still basking in the afterglow of one of the finest musical events in recent memory, spent with an amazing assemblage of like-minded freaks we call Zoners. I knew it was going to be a whole lotta fun, but everything exceeded my wildest expectations.

Where to begin? My whole trip to WCZJ would have been impossible without the open-hearted hospitality of the Canyon family, who provided a comfortable place for me to stay on both Friday and Saturday nights. When I first arrived at Canyon's and told him that his generosity made it possible for me to attend the Jam, his response was "This is what Zoners DO!" I'll never forget that, man.

We arrived at the venue early, before 8:30 am, and immediately I felt the positive vibes emanating from the venerable amphitheater. After several of us helped Mylar unload his gear from the U-Haul truck, I mainly hung back to stay out of the way, and watched the stage setup evolve, but helped out a little along the way here and there. In the meantime I was on a steep learning curve meeting all these Zoners for the very first time!! Over the course of the day I probably met 40 to 50 of you fine folks, and I can't hope to remember all your names (especially those of you with dual identities!), but maybe if I apply the few remaining brain cells I have, I can give it a shot.

Some of the early-morning crew: Canyon, Mrs. Canyon, Rory, Mylar, Doogs, and Hedspace are the main ones I remember. Shortly thereafter the SoCal crew arrived, including Timmy Hoover, Lord Henry, Turtle, Furious E, and a couple more. Then folks started showing up in droves, among them Frank Sinatra (Mike), Gunnar, Todd & Van & Joe Stoner from the West County Outlaws, ToreUp (Kelly), Nancy & son, Plf9905 (Rob) from Ventura, Tar & Kelly from Colorado, BackOnTheBus (Teal), G.Dad, Hall, Emily, Uncle John, Walstib & Jennifer, FrogPajamas (Laura), Tiffany, Jessica from Santa Cruz, Redneck, Sam Flot, Sue Weiand, MissUJerr -- pleased to have made your acquaintances! To all you wonderful Zoners, and those I've omitted from the list, THANK YOU for a real good time!!

The Decorations Committee -- Nancy & ToreUp & others -- went above and beyond with all the great banners and signs that gave it that unique Zoner ambiance. Glad I was able to help out a little bit in the rigging of the ZonerJam banner. I'm sure you're gonna save all that stuff, 'cause it'll be put to good use again in succeeding years. In Phil We Trust!!!

It was a TRIP witnessing the amphitheater progress from a bare stage to a full-on professional setup!! And the acoustics of the place were frikkin' amazing!! Early on, while the stage setup was going on, Lord Henry stood onstage riffing on his mandolin, and even at the top of the seats the unamplified sound was crystal clear.

And then, the music!! The sun never burned through the fog that day, but the music sure was hot!!! Each band pulled out all the stops to put on the most amazing performances I could have imagined. Sure, there were a few technical glitches here and there, but audio problems were minimal and dealt with quickly, and overall the sound was kickass all the way.

Opening act Mylar & Friends -- you guys blew me away!! Wish that Stu, Marty and Sam from JGB could have hung around for the whole day.

West County Outlaws played a stellar set -- Lisa's got some serious pipes, y'all !! (and she remarked later that she was the only woman represented among the performers at the Jam -- that'll have to change, IMO).

Reefer Canyon played an awesome set of driving rock and roll. Timmy & Co. also exhibited great showmanship, with Furious E laying down a badass bottom, and the youngster Zach on drums driving the beat HARD throughout. It was also great seeing LH sit in on mando on a couple tunes.

Lost Ticket simply ROCKED THE HOUSE!! Doogs, you got a good thing going there, man. And your manager or sound guy or whoever he was -- he's got serious vocal talent as well !!

Five Eyed Hand totally impressed me with their jazzy, ethereal jamrock. Chris Zanardi is a guitar virtuoso, plain and simple. I also loved the violin, and the whistling drummer was damn good too!

Closing band Left Coasting, with Frank Sinatra at the helm, put on a phenomenal set of improvisational jazz-rock-funk. Frank, so glad I finally got to see your band after all this time seeing your promo posts on the Zone.

Great encore selection of GDTRFB and Ripple for the closing Jam. The assembled musicians really stretched it out with inspired jamming throughout, and I believe there were fifteen (count 'em, 15) musicians on stage for the finale. It's something I'll not soon forget.

Lots of other great memories from that day... The PhilZone welcoming table with posters, flyers, CDs, a basket of fruit, and assorted other stuff. The poster of Phil taped to the wall in back of the performers. The Green Room. The awesome view from the top of the amphitheater. The old-fashioned butter churn at the front of the stage (what was THAT all about?). The young kids romping all around the venue, fun with chalk, the KidsZone tent. Perma-grins all around, and the awesome loving vibe. The condoms that disappeared from the hospitality baskets in the restrooms. The ZonerJam plunger. Two kegs of beer -- Amstel Light for the masses and Red Tail Ale in the Green Room (whatever happened to the leftover Red Tail??). Beer, shots and herb freely imbibed without a hint of law enforcement presence. And then there was the smoked salmon donated by Humboldt Zoner Rob/Matanaska (he went to Mtn. Jam instead), which I was able to spread around to no fewer than 2 dozen deserving and appreciative Zoners. A final classy touch -- birthday cake & ice cream in celebration of the numerous Zoner birthdays. Thanks for all the great memories, folks.

As far as I know, I was the sole rep from Humboldt. People were estimating that there were about 100 folks in attendance, maybe a few more. I was wondering how many Zoners were there, and Canyon stated that there may have been as many as 80. Now THAT'S an impressive Zoner turnout!!

On my way back north to Humboldt the following day, I stopped in at the 31st Annual Mateel Summer Arts & Music Festival at Benbow Lake State Park. Only $12 admission for the whole day, or $20 for those who went both Sat. & Sun. The festie was well-attended with the usual Humboldt-Mendocino mix of hippies, wookies, families, Rasta wanna-be's, Gen Xers, rural hip-hoppers, diesel cowboys, and LOTS of young kids. Very mellow family vibe, glad I went. And I can say with some assurance that I was the only Zoner who attended both WCZJ and the Mateel Fest. Saw Budboy & Budgirl, Purplemeadow, Lee, Aaron, Humboldt Jerry, and a bunch of the usual Emerald Triangle suspects. Dan, Jan & Purp were raving about the headlining performance the previous evening by Peter Rowan & Crucial Reggae, and Dan showed me a few killer photos he took of Rowan and the band. I saw a few decent bands in the afternoon -- Delta Nove, Junior Toots, Sambada -- then Melvin & JGB. During Melvin's short but excellent 75-minute set, at times the intensity of dancing kicked up a veritable dust storm that washed over the crowd. Here's the setlist: Tough Mama, Stop That Train, Tore Up, TWLWMYD, Breadbox, Sisters and Brothers, Deal. No encore, as expected with festival scheduling (they were running late), and there was one more band whose name escapes me that I didn't stay to see. Very cool that I got to see Stu Allen, Marty Holland and Sam Howard on consecutive days in entirely different band settings.

All in all, a fine culmination to my WCZJ weekend -- one of the most memorable musical and cultural events I've ever experienced. What started as Canyon's dream evolved into a Zoner party that'll be hard to top. But I have every expectation that next year's Jam will do just that!! Zoners ROCK!!!

Hope to see a few familiar Zoner faces at next weekend's Harmony Fest, and then at one or more of the DNF shows the following week.

Until then -- hold on to your dreams, and keep your lovelight on.

Without love in the dream, it will never come true!

All the crowd were top notch folks.

Everything just worked really well. Everything came together because there are so many great people hanging around this place (both the Zone and Bay Area).

During the allstar jam, Dave Olson of Spindrift was also up there playing Doogel's acoustic bass:

Doog, Dave and Josh are all bass students of Kai Eckhardt.

I'm having the whole MegaJam edited in HD video along with Left Coasting's set.

That video was a sampler that Peter sent me so I could decide whether or not I wanted to have him do the editing.

I know that Chris also had his set video'd.

The editing process will take about a month which is perfect, because I'm currently broke, so by the time the editing is done, I'll have $$ to pay for it and some of Susan's fantastic photos.

It was great to meet you, btw.

Look out for a more complete GDTRFB sampler in the near future.

When it's all said and done, I'll do some freebies and maybe someone can vine it.

Props to Sam Flot our MC and more for the groovieness that he possesses..was that Garrin Benfield that accompanied him on guitar at times..??..

Has Flot posted anywhere yet..??..

No matter..IMO..Sam Flot is a Zoner even if has not posted..

Sorta a ZonerJam achievment award..

>was that Garrin Benfield that accompanied [Sam Flot] on guitar at times?

No, that was Chris Zanardi from 5-Eyed Hand. That's the same guy who made the AUD recording, arranged the videographer, and brought the butter churn. I think Chris did the majority of the PR for the Jam, too. His drummer supplied the gray drumset on the backline.

Yes..the fact that amps and drums were available and musicians did not have to schlep their own was very cool..

And the sound system..Mylar's and whoever else brought that gear..the sound was terrific..

Zinardi's involvement and that of other musicians..illustrates as so much of ZonerJam did..

That we do in fact..

Get By With A Little Help From Our Friends...

When I saw the condoms in the bathroom and the industrial strength grinder (butter churn) on stage allz I could think of is what a piss poor of a job I did as Chairman of the Hookers and Blow committee..

Bwahhhaaaaaa.........

In addition to the awesome Chris Zanardi, Derek Bodkin of Five Eyed Hand did a lot of publicity too. Those gray drums were Derek's up there.

Sam Flot is not online, but I'll pass along everyone's props next time I see him!

I am beginning to more fully understand why these "Non Zoners" were included in the event

**My loose definition of Zoner is someone that has posted at least once

And a Zoner Band..IMO..has a minimum of one Zoner associate..ie: crew..next of kin family..musician..

Hey GDad,

Five Eyed Hand has gigged with us a few times and our Sax player is a "rotating member" of FEH

Plus, Chris is good friends with Rory. We've also had Chris sit in with Left Coasting on a number of gigs.

First ZonerJam show was Dec 10, 2006 at the Rockit Room (Formerly The Last Day Saloon) in SF. Lost Ticket>Left Coasting>Five Eyed Hand (they were called "BTZ" at the time). Andrew and I sat in with them and Chris sat in with us! There's links in the Dec 2006 Other Stuff Archive folder.

So, I'd say that qualifies all those guys as Zoners! :-)

I'm sending off a couple different recordings of the Jam to Peter (videographer) to synch with the Video. Thanks To Jenn and CZ for the audio. My own recorder ran out of battery, so I lost the whole day's audio :-( I just had too much to keep track of. Luckily we had redundancy.

Hopefully we'll have the Full GDTRFB available on video by next week.

I'll post the link when Peter contacts me back.

The ecology of ZonerJam is what struck me..

It seemed so balanced..

A wise man seeks help when faced with a difficult task...

BTZ..+ L.Coasting + L.Ticket..yes I remember reading bout that...

I used to fly up to see Wise Monkey Orchestra..a San Diego band..when they played Last Day Saloon..That was 1998-2000..Did not know there was a venue name change.

They were slated to play some of the Further Festival gigs opening for The Other Ones..Then Phil got sick..

When I saw T shirt..Phils Back..I got tingly..

Hey Now Phellow Phil Phreaks,

Here's the full Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad from the Allstar Zonerband Encore of the Inagural West Coast Zoner Jam

I can't tell you all how proud I am to be a part of this community...

We may still dial this in some more as the SBD just became available. This version has been synched with Zanardi's Audience recording. Once the rest of the video footage is done, I'll be passing it around

(First time poster--be gentle!)

Heya, I shot two angles of video of just the Reefer Canyon set (favor for a friend), and I've finally worked my way through the rest of my video backlog to start processing this footage. I can go with the audio from the camcorders, but clearly any of the other audio sources would be better (I'd be happy to mix soundboard with my camcorder, if that's the best I can get). I'd be happy to send free copies of the finished DVD to anyone else who wants one; it should take around two weeks to get everything finished. Other DVDs we currently distribute (again, for free) are available here:

http://king.dyndns.org/DVDs.html
(and that link also contains contact information). Thanks!

If anyone is interested in a copy, let me know.

Never got any other audio for the Reefer Canyon set, so we're just going with the camcorder audio. The DVD is ready, so if you'd like a copy, e-mail king@mindspring.com, state that you'd like the Reefer Canyon disc, give me a valid postal address where you'd like it sent (please split your address into multiple lines so it's clear). If you'd like anything else from our list, feel free to include those requests as well.
