For me, the room and the music began to gel with Sun Goes Down...Everything before that was really good, but everyting from that point forward was beyond description. Everybody got comfortable with the surroundings and the sound and each other, and then the fun started. Dan had the room absolutely dialed in by that point, the lights and video show were cool as hell, and the band just went off...
They collected drinks so no one would be drinking past legal hours in the bar and that allowed Hookah to do a nice fat encore. Kudos to the bar staff and ownership for pullin' that off. Everybody was more than happy to give up their drinks to hear more music.
It was the perfect cap to a perfect day. I ate at the Golden Harvest Cafe, went to the avenue of the giants for the most of the day, then to a nice cookout, then up to Arcata for a Humboldt Crabs game, and then back to Eureka for the show...By the way, Crabs games are a blast...
What a great way to spend my birthday...Happy Birthday to me...

ISIS....Cliff broke 2 strings on his bass
I really feel that if Cliff hadn't broken those strings, they'd have played 'til dawn...As it was, they played past 3 O'Clock...
On Friday, they got the whole crowd to abandon their drinks to the bar so Hookah could play their encore.
So the owners of the bar checked with the police on saturday regarding the legalities of playing past closing time...They said as long as alcohol wasn't being consumed or served, everything was copacetic...
So on Saturday, at the end of the short but sezhuan second set (show started late due to the need to find a suitable drum kit)...They again came out and announced that if you abandon your drinks, we'll play some more...So 5 minutes later Hookah was off and playing past 3 O'Clock, the place hoppin' with Hookahheads dancin' to their favorite tunes, and a bunch of locals standin' around with big smiles on their faces discovering a new favorite band.
And the band blasted the fucking roof off the place.
As one local music lover said...this was unprecedented...
It's like a lot of moments in time we've all shared...a uniquely powerful and beautiful musical experience.
Kudos to the band, to Dan for the incredible sound, and a BIG BIG thank you to my good buddy Ryan, who's hard work and dedication made all this possible. He worked his ASS off for a long time lining up equipment, bringin' in a top notch video andlight production, getting amps, drums, etc...His "Dutchy Productions" put on a hell of a show...Nice video screen with fantastic imagery morphing in and out of video of the band...It was top notch stuff...
So a big round of applause to all involved in an incredible musical event...
That was one hell of a way to spend a birthday weekend...
They're comin' back after Thanksgiving...I can't make that one, but all of you who couldn't make it this time should get plannin'...
Also, we spent the day hangin' out at the Oyster Fest in Arcata...beautiful place, great fest, yummy oysters, great beer...just a really cool little festival...
All in all, it was one of the best times I have had with Hookah...and I've had some GREAT times with Hookah...
What a weekend...
I forgot the wonderful meal we had on Saturday...We ate at the Bless My Soul Cafe in Eureka. Mama Jannisse is one of a kind. She sat with us past closing time sharing stories about her life, listening to ours, and all involved were laughing for atleast an hour and a half...
Also, it was Chris Noonan on sax...I missed the edit time on that...I got one of 'em, but missed the other...He's one hell of a sax player...He sat in with Earl Thomas at the Oyster Fest, and hosted an amazing after hours party at a warehouse in Arcata...very nice guy, and an incredible sax player...
Schwa -- thanks for the great review.
I was at the Red Fox for the Saturday show, sorry we didn't meet up, but with a packed house -- and not knowing what you look like -- it would've been amazing to have crossed paths with another Zoner. I was standing just right of center about 8-10 feet from the stage. Didn't take long to notice that pretty much everybody up front knew the words to all of their songs. And much to my surprise, more than half the folks up close that I talked to were from east of the Mississippi!! Very cool that so many came from so far away to catch their favorite band!
It was my first time seeing hookah, and they completely blew me away. Needless to say I have a new favorite band to start paying attention to!
>>>As one local music lover said...this was unprecedented...
Might've been me that said that... ;-)
A very cool scene, and glad to hear they may be making another trip to Humboldt in the next few months!
I talked with 2 gentlemen before the 3rd set on Saturday...One was Charlie...he had a hat on, and I believe a gray beard...The other had long dark brown or black hair pulled back in a ponytail...Both were very impressed with the band as a whole, and Sweney in particular...
Perhaps that was you...I had on an earthtoned tie dyed golf shirt my buddy Ryan gave me for my birthday...
Perhaps we did meet...
Also...don't take my word for names...I was battling a magical crouton all night...
I was looking through photos I took while standing up on the staircase...I think I see you standing where you said you were for most of the night. If that is you in the pic, then we did indeed talk, and it was you that said "I've seen a lot of shows at the Red Fox, and this is unprecedented"...
I tapped you on the shoulder after Ridgeway Sky and said "That's Steve Fuckin' Sweney for ya"...
..>>..The other had long dark brown or black hair pulled back in a ponytail..<<..
Was he smiling all the time...
If so it was prob G.Fish
SCHWADUDE...June 16 was your B.Day..??
>>>I talked with 2 gentlemen...
You're too kind -- I turned 54 on June 4th, you young whippersnapper. Charlie and I were definitely two of the newbie elders at that show.
Charlie & I went to the show together -- we both have ponytails, hair tied back, he with a short beard, me with a mustache, and both of us with more than a touch of grey...
>>>Steve fuckin' Sweeney
indeed, bro... he's definitely on my radar now
Yep...I talked to both of you...pleasure to have met you...I think I may have introduced myself as Tommy...I'm a little older than a good portion of Hookah's crowd...I have glasses and a goatee with a touch of gray...I'm glad you got to see it and got into it...Sweney's been blowin' my mind for 16 years now...
And GDad...my BDay was the 15th...
Saturday's show's up on the archive...
