"Blazing hot Stratocaster at the Sheldon"
"Steve Stills showed off his incredible musicianship at the Sheldon last night. Started with an acoustic set that plodded along while he bashed Bush in between tunes till he closed it with Suite Judy Blue Eyes. After a break he returned with his band and a sunburst Stratocaster and launched into a hard rocker from his Manassas days, played low down slide on Rocky Mountain Way, made it wail & scream on Woodstock, and had me dancing from Love the One You're With to the end of the show. I knew he was a fabuous musician, but was surprised with his ultradynamic playing. Carlos would have cried the way he made his Strat cry, Stevie Ray would have beamed at the wailing of that fretboard. An awesome musician in an awesome concert hall!"

He's always been a loose cannon but he sure can play the guitar. One of the more underrated players.

Thursday's (6/28) show in Boulder was excellent. I definitely agree w/ the dude from St. Louis above about the 2nd set, but I hardly thought Stills plodded through the acoustic set. His solo set was pretty spot-on -- if you dig solo acoustic music. It was a big kick for me personally b/c the I saw my first show as a CO resident at the Boulder theater: Radiators, fall '89. Plus Still spent some time in the Boudler area back in the day. Anyhow, he sounded great, only made one crack about Bush, and bascially played his ass off -- though I could definitely have gone for 2-3 more songs each set. Here's what I remember, probably in the the wrong order:

1st set, Acoustic:
Wasted on the Way -- w/band, I think,I know he played this one and I know the first tune was with the band
Tree Top Flyer -- always a fun one
Blind Fiddler-- new version of an old ballad, melodically similar to Know You Got to Run, excellent tune
Change Partners
Helplessly Hoping
Johnny's Garden
Different Man
Daylight Again=>Find the Cost of Freedom
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes

2nd set, electric
Southern Cross
Isn't It About Time
New tune - bluesy, Still on keys, very nice
Rocky Mountain Way -- Wailin! jammed into or out of another tune, can't remember what
Woodstock
For What it's Worth
Love the One You're With -- last three songs were a kick ass rock and roll barrage to close the show.

E: Dark Star

Overall, a great show, a don't miss for Stills fans: playing was strong, voice solid, stories typically Still-style rock-star goofiness.

What's there to know? Go see Stills if he comes your way. He's one of the best there has ever been.

I saw him down in NC in May...

...there were definitely some great highlights, but overall it was disappointing.

the entire show was only about 65-70 minutes, SS flubbed a lot of lines (lost track of his teleprompter), charged a big price $$ for the venue.

when it was good, it was quite good...but unfortunately I think overall expectations were not met.
