"Phil & Friends rocked the Sweetwater to its foundations last night. Phil, Jackie Greene, John Molo, Steve Molitz, and our own Barry Sless. Everyone who had $47.50 got in as the management threw the posted capicity of 99 to the wind. It was hot in there, maybe even dangerously so as the folks were slammed on top of each other in full cosmic, sweaty bliss despite the fact that it was freezing out just outside the doors. Nevertheless, the band rocked out and the crowd of odorous fans ate it up. Nice to see Barry playing with such a great band - he deserves it. Certainly worth the trip from New Jersey but who would have thought to bring the winter coat?

>>>Ramble On ??
Gone Wanderin', from the Jackie Greene CD of the same name
Everybody got in! come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen the sweetwater turn away a buck.
I spent the night up in the Jackiepit, elbow to elbow, but everyone had their space for the most part, I had a boob in my armpit for a tune or two.
The music was great with all 5 in top gear. MT MOLO erupted a couple times and the energy would lift the place into a frenzy then subside.
The kid is a keeper, nice voice and PASSION for the music, really beautiful to watch. I really like his reworked School Girl.
Thanks to all the PhilZoners(cyber and actual),Phil & his Friends, and the sweetwater staff for a wonderful evening. I can't wait till we get to do it again.
RANDOM AMUZMENTS
Talking to Bobby's father aout his extra large prostate.
doorman"sorry you can't come back here" women:"I'm Jill Lesh" doorman:"you can go anywhere you want"
Phil threw a wrist band at me but my instinct was to duck and it just grazed me head(mearly a flesh wound) and lucky fan behind me scooped it up.
good for you folks, hopefully this is a warm up for some bigger gigs....
ps. tell phil he's missed in other parts....
:-)
Oh Shit! Flying Wristbands - Duck!!
Classic Move There Canyon
>>The kid is a keeper, nice voice and PASSION for the music, really beautiful to watch.
absoultely!
so many of the songs had a groovy almost reggae feel, then morphed into hard driving rock sound, or maybe more of a blues feel, thing is, this kid is ORIGINAL sounding and has great instincts (plays well with others) and clicked with Phil and his other friends. welcome aboard Mr. Greene, come again soon.
as Canyon said, the place was packed, and the sweaty bodies were getting in all kinds of places...one big orgy - well, almost
well, we weren't slammed on top of
eachother by any means, i expected
a lot worse from stories i heard...
one thing is right rocked the Sweetwater on it's
foundation!!!
Canyon, Nancy, et al. -- thx for the reviews, stories & insights. Sounds like an epic night, for sure.
other attendees -- post yer photos here, pleeze!!

A couple of extra comments to add...
There were a couple of huge teases over the evening. The Other One jammed between Birdsong and Deal. My notes listed a tease between the 2nd and 3rd verses of Viola, but for the life of me can't remember what. Then there was the Let's Spend The Night Together out of Scarlet and also a SlipKnot going into eyes. Hopefully I'm not too far off...
Jackie Greene was a joy and Phil obviously agreed. The grin on Phil's face all night was priceless (damn Phil looked good!). Jackie really carried a number of tunes and the band kept egging him on. I particularly enjoyed seeing Jackie saying "and I'm a little School boy too" with a big grin on his face. I haven't seen such good primal screams on Phil's stage!
This is a line-up with the potential to nicely reinterpret some of the Dead repertoire. Jackie's phrasing is refreshing and different. Steve Molitz really keeps growing and his organ playing sounds great...he's certainly enjoying himself and adding his flavor. Molo and Barry are such bedrocks but also pushing it onward.
A good night all in all. Thanks Phil!
My capsule review:
Jackie Greene can play with the big boys.
I share nothing but love for Jackie. I'm just thrilled to death with him! It was fun standing behind Kate listening to primal growls that would come from her every time Jackie shook his hip a little.
And I'm digging on Particle Dude, too. He was on his feet a lot last night rocking out. Molo -- I never get tired of him. Sless continues to fill his shoes perfectly.
Good people, good setlist. Good times all around.
Nice weekend Phil..Jill..UBC..Those that worked on school..and you Zoners..
Real nice..
check out the rock star shirt on phil!!!!!!!
nice job folks
Thinking about the 2nd set Jackie Greene song. My notes list "walking away". I think this may have been "When You're Walking Away" from American Myth.
Anyone know for sure?
Jackie Greene
When You're Walking Away
Well I aint gonna ask you what youre doing here
I know you got your reasons but honey, they aint ever clear
And maybe its just better that you never stay
I love you more when youre walking away
I aint gonna ask you whats on your mind
Its hard enough for my own head to unwind
The world is getting smaller, each and every day
and I love you more when youre walking away
When youre walking away
baby, i get high like i never could
you dont stay, although sometimes I wish you would
everythings clear when youre not here
lonesome is a candle in the night
a one-room bedroom window crying-light
you take me for granted, but baby thats ok
i love you more when youre walking away
When youre walking away
baby I get high like i never could
you dont stay, honey sometimes i wish you would
everythings clear when youre not here
well i aint gonna ask you what youre doing here
take what you can get and then disapear
ah but thats alright mama, you can leave me any day
cause i love you more when youre walking away
sounds like a fun night. thanks for the reviews. Phil does indeed look great in those pics. Jackie's "American Myth" is a great album... check it out.
Hey, Dan. It's definitely Gone Wanderin', from the Jackie Greene CD of the same name. I confirmed the lyrics against a recording.
There were two jackie songs, I believe he did both Gone Wanderin (1st set) and When You're Walking Away (2nd set).
I wasn't keeping notes on saturday but the JGreene originals really struck the proverbial chord with me.
Loved his take on Let It Ride as well, I really dig that tune, there's definitely a lesson in there.
thank you everyone for the insight & pics

Listening to the recording non-stop! I'm seriously loving it! Everything is great but the big big sugaree and the good morning little school girl are my favorites. The JGe tunes and Let it Ride are right up there too...

has anyone had any luck listening to the 7/7 show that philzone sez is on live 365 but they say is not available??? or any of the shows???
i hope i don't come across as too obsessive about this, but i've been calling jackie the new jg in my life since i was blessed with first seeing him in feb. '05. i'm blown away that phil has discovered him and am totally jonesin' to hear them play together, but so far i can't find any anywhere (except for signing up for the vine here, which looks like it's also gonna take a while to get to me - i'm #20)
any help with this would be greatly appreciated...
found the 7/21 show on internet archive, for anyone else who's looking (just posted this morning).
