It was good.
More to come...
Did we get spoiled tonight! Thank you PHIL and all the UBC folks for putting this entire event together. Did I mention that I like Jackie Greene? Excellent concert tonight. Ripple encore by the pool was surreal.
No reviews yet..
Been solong since Phil has played on Westcoast Zoners forgot about Phil Show Review threads..
I heard a 5 minute Birdsong Guitar Jam via cell phone..
2 things..
1. It was a very good connection..
2. Sounded..if I had not known who the band was..
Like David Nelson and Friends when they get firing on all cylanders..
First things first, don't copy and paste my review anywhere else, it's my review, I'll put it where I see fit and that's it. Please don't steal it.

Okay, that's the setlist as I kept it.
Bottom Line: Jackie Greene is awesome! He's a keeper. It seemed like Phil enjoyed him as much as the rest of us, so hopefully he'll be around for a while.
The only thing better than hanging with Bert & Ernie (on Acid!) was Jackie's smooth gentle voice and he sweet little drawl...Just one thaaaang, I ask of you...
Darlin, you can ask me any old thang, but not a chance I'll be forgetting you
The overall sound was mellow and relaxed, Jackie put his own spin on the tunes, wasn't playing the standard we might thing about, but playing what he felt it should be. And it worked perfectly. The laidback vibe definitely had me thinking about the recent David Nelson shows, Molo has clearly been influenced by his time with DNF, the eruption of Mt. St. Molo has subsided and now we've got hot lava flows to deal with! I'm constantly in awe of the hot hot hot and yet mellow and easy vibe we've been enjoying lately. It's sooooo good.
Barry's pedal steel playing was a perfect fit on the JGreene tunes. The lyrics are great, I'm digging Jackie's song writing, add in Barry and the songs are haunting and emotionally charged.
Songs like Midnight Rider and Good Morning Little School Girl came completely out of left field, wouldn't have picked them at all. They were jangly and unfamiliar through Jackie's interpretation of them, reworked in ways that surprised me. I really like that, it was refreshing to be caught off guard, especially because it worked. Jackie's 'I'm a little school boy too...' was endearing, he's so young, it's almost appropriate. It's completely different from older versions that we're used to, nothing lustful about it, instead a very sweet, innocent feeling. Not exactly how I'd describe Pigpen
A shorter set than at the Sweetwater, I would have enjoyed another Let It Ride. No Molitz this time either, I think this is the only time I've seen Phil in a bass-drums-2 guitar quartet. I liked it. Molitz was awesome on Saturday night, he brought a great energy to the stage, he and Jackie were cute together, playing off each other and goofing around. Without him (Molitz) the music was stripped down and jangly.
Jackie Greene isn't very wide He's a skinny guy, he's angles not curves. He's jerky not smooth and that's reflected in his playing. He has these moments, spasms of sorts and it's true, it's a real reflection of what's coming from him. He was so natural. He appeared comfortable, letting out what he felt, not necessarily what was written on the page...and it worked. It's hard to avoid the Ryan Adams comparision. Ryan--eat yer heart out--Jackie's got it and he doesn't need to be a suffering, tortured soul to share it with us.
As for the rest of the weekend, the people, the places, the community...that's what it was all about. The community is better as a result of this weekend. Marin, San Rafael, Homeward Bound, The Unbrokenchain Foundation, Phil and his family, the PhilZone, my life personally...everything was strengthened. We sent out a lot of positive vibes and that's what was important. Every act this weekend was decided and intentional. The intent was love. That's more important than everything else.
PS--Phil was there too He sounded good... but that goes without saying.
can't wait to here the new kids voice....was listening to the mt. jam discs this week...and while i'm not in it for the vocals per se....a good singer would go a long way....warren's voice is not my fav....

GREAT review, Emily!!
I really appreciate you taking the time to put your thoughts in writing.
Your review and the other stories and insights posted here -- and in OS http://www.philzone.org/cgi-bin/discus/board-auth. cgi?lm=1184037431&file=/287273/400585.html -- plus the photos by Zoners and Bob Minkin -- really make these epic events come alive for those of us unable to attend.
Kudos to all you reviewers and photographers!! Thanks so much!!!
Nice review, Emily.
As usual.
Thanks guys
I can't wait to see more JGe! He's got so much potential...It's gonna be exciting to see what happens when he learns more songs and plays in front of bigger crowds!
I love Jackie Greene, his solo stuff is great..Not to be a downer, but people seem to forget that artists like Ryan Adams and Jackie Greene have careers of their own...just saying don't expect Jackie to just drop his solo career and do an extended tour with Phil...its possible..and i'm sure these guys have the time of their lives playing with Phil and doing Dead tunes...but just like Ryan, i'm sure he's got his own thing going on...I know he's booked pretty solid through August at least...maybe he will do fall dates with Phil if that happens.
Look for openings in Jackie's schedule between now and the Fall
>>Not to be a downer<<
And yet you do it anyhow?
And, sorry to disappoint you but we know JGe has a great solo career and we're excited for that too. Most of the 'other stuff' zoners who attended the sweetwater show will be at Jackie's show this weekend in Santa Cruz.
As for 'maybe he will do fall dates'...the answer is yes, there will be a fall tour, NYC, Philly, Boston and NYE in SF.
Odessa..any Phil shows between now and the Fall..??..
I love Emily reviews!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks Em, so happy you were able to be a part of it, you deserve it after all the good cheer you always spread here.
Keep your eyes peeled G.Dad...we all know what a prankster Phil is!
Thanks Peglet Speaking of good cheer...you've got mail!
I just signed into this after meeting so many "zoners" this weekend. Jillian and I were and are still so thankful for the past weekend. The UBC project for me truly speaks to the GD love and its energy. We had such an amazing time meeting all of you and hope to meet many more on down the road. I'd upload my pics and review but they are totally done justice here already, but just to say thanks and spread more love is all I needed to do. So Grateful, all the dead that fits the head-Peace and Blessings Jillian and Brennan

Having just read Emily's review, I have to give her "big-ups" for writing her review so well. I was lucky enough to be there and meet some Zoners (and others), who were just great. So were the people from UBC. Thanks for an unforgettable weekend. Looking forward to more Phil with you all in the future.
Thanks Todd, Glad to see you haven't been scared off yet
