I had my camera but was mostly unsucessful in using it...I did find an enormous guitar just down the street from the theatre...
and I got my album signed by Greg and Tim...Hey Emily! but they didn't play that song...
As for the show, it was good but a little slow, lots of ballads! No JGe, which was kinda surprising, I've 7 Mother Hips shows in the past 13 months, and he was at the most recent four...the result was a much rougher sound. Jackie's keys filled in the holes and smoothed things out adding a bit of space here and there. JGe gave the music an etheral quality, last night was completed rooted though, very heavy on the blues and rock. But a lot of ballads, even the upbeat songs were really more mid-tempo. Towards the end I was hearing 'stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again' only they needed to double the pace...
The setlist drew heavy from the new album, with some old favorites tossed in...No Hey Emilie or Mother Hips though
The setlist as I kept it, definitely a couple things missing though...
Red Tandy
Singing Seems to Ease Me
Kiss the Crystal Flake
The Time We Had
Let Somebody
Confirmation of Love
Time Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear
Melody Faire (No drummer, great acoustic jamming, beautiful harmonies! )
Del Mar Station (a nice rocker)
Stephanie Lives in LA (never heard it before but it's an oldie that the crowd went wild for)
Channel Island Girl (She comes from sunny santa barbara...love it!)
? (not sure the name of this one but it's worth mentioning because it was offspring-esque, I got a giggle out of it...without JGe on keys they went much heavier and darker)
Mission in Vain (Big jam, even some feedback at the end! one of the highlights off the new album)
E: Turtle Bones (Yay! except I wasn't wearing the skirt this time?)
Santa Cruz here I come! I'm gonna bring my orange sharpie and see if I can get JGe to sign the album as well!
edit
Here's some pics courtsey of Todd and Lynnett...
One More:
Thx for posting, Em.
Wow, you and a bunch of other Zoners have had an incredible run of live music over the last week or so.
I'm a little "green" with envy
Mother Hips truly rock! Thanks for Hips updates Emily! They were amazing in Hoboken when I saw them on Cinco de Mayo
