The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, Ca
We started the day off with a delightful pre-game bbq at Googly's house! Then it's off to the show, having seen only one show, surrounded by unfortunate circumstances at the catalyst, I wasn't excited for the venue. But this show changed that...when it's not sold out, it's a much different place!
Setlist:
Hollywood
The Rusty Nail
Farewell, So Long, Goodbye
By the Side of the Road, Dressed to Kill
Closer to You
Tell Me Mama, Tell Me Right (with a little Zeppelin tease but I'm blanking on what it was)
So Hard to Find My Way
The Lord Mistreats Me
Mexican Girl
I'm So Gone
Cold Black Devil
E: Ripple*
Jam/unknown JGe Tune?*

Including the encore, the show was just under 2 hours, that would be my only complaint. I'm a fan of the 2 set show
The band included a couple horn players as special guests. George Brooks was the sax player and he looked real familiar to me but I can't quite place him. Maybe I've seen him at Yoshi's, doing an indian-jazz sorta show...at any rate...
It was awesome, gave the show a New Orleans, funky, Dr. John, big band sorta vibe. JGe switched back and forth from guitar to keys all night, playing the harp as well. The band flowed easily from one tune to the next. They found the groove easily with each song, except for the one tune Jackie aborted...two lines in he stopped it, not really sure why. At that point I did have a little moment of panic--was this ryan all over again? But no, the band laughed a little and then just ripped into the next one.
We got little glimpses of Jackie's personality throughout the night, like when he said 'NO, We're not gonna play any Skynyrd.' Big laughs and applause from everyone (including phil!). An excited female in the crowd tossed her thong up on stage...Jackie thanked whoever it was and delicately hung it on his mic over the keys. Ha!
The show encored with the moment we'd been waiting for, Phil hit the stage. It would have been enough to see him enjoy the show from the crowd but it's always nice when he takes the stage. The Ripple was very sweet as a duo, Jackie played acoustic guitar and harmonica. After that, the rest of the band came back and Jackie said 'we're just gonna jam now'...and they did!
The tune is unknown, but I'm assuming it was a JGe song. They started off with a nice looooooong intro...Jackie's got a great band, the bass player switched to guitar, while Jackie played keys and they were off, Phil was steering the band and the rest of the guys really picked up on it. It was cool to see, of course Molo picks up on phils subtle clues but to see it happen with guys that phil couldn't possibly have extensive practice with was neat! It was a testament to both phil's ability as a bandleader and the talent of the band Jackie's put together.
Overall, it was a great night at the Catalyst, I'm so glad Jackie is a local guy!
And, let me add the disclaimer:
Don't copy and paste my review to other websites.
great review emily as always, He did the same set on Sunday night except for Ripple/Jam
He looked tired but the band was in good shape and the drummer and bass player rocked solid all night long
Thanks GVdude, It seems like this set is 'standard'...
Hollywood seems to be a favorite opener, I've seen it on several other setlists. Mexican Girl is a hit with the fans, it appears in a many (most?) shows.
I was just a little bummed he didn't play the stuff we saw with Phil, When You're Walking Away and Gone Wanderin'...they're both great songs, but I did just see them both last weekend, variety is spice of life
I'm so impressed with the talent and professionalism Jackie and the whole band display, they're so young but they've got it together! I picked up both American Myth and the Dig Years, can't wait to give them a listen!
Checking my notes I seem to have left a song out...

his brother looks just like him.
Somebody told me that Jackie had Mic Gillette on trumpet and trombone when he played Grass Valley yesterday. Gillette was a member of the legenday Tower of Power Horns and also played with Cold Blood, and the Sons of Champlin. Could he have also been at the Catalyst?
Just checking as Mic's somewhat of a legend having recorded with many. Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat is a favorite.
Yes, I caught George's name but missed the trumpet/trombone player's name. I'd bet that's him though.
The horns were a great addition to the show.
George Brooks? What a trip! He's an excellent player and yes, his usual thing is an east/west jazz meld and he often has Zakir Hussain in his group, which is how I know of him.
>>>the show was just under 2 hours<<<
When it's good you want it go all night long. It's a shame more musicians wern't trained by hippie bands!
Still, it sounds like it was a real good show, which doesn't surprise me; there's something about Santa Cruz that brings out the "good" in musicians. I'm heading over to "Sanity" Cruz later this afternoon to see Ani DiFranco at the Civic tonight.
I love the summertime!!
As soon as I saw those braids I knew I'd seen George before...I think, it was last year in early february, he did a thing at yoshi's, inspired by a book about saffron. Kai Eckhardt was with him and one of ali akbar kan's sons...

what a great night! And seeing Phil in the crowd at the local club was cool, but seeing him play a few songs, that was the best.
