I hadnt planned on going in, its very easy to sit outside of Mizner Park with a cooler and a chair and hear the music crystal clear, lots of people do it . . . its a thing. But I got to talking to an innie and he had an xtra 6th row center seat and the Mozz was coming out and I stepped up to the impulse buy. And off I went to experience life with Mozz's undying fans (they were kinda crazy!)
You gotta hand it to any band that is willing to come all the way to South Florida in the middle of July, but you really have to hand it to an Englishman braving the mid July heat and humidity. I thought that Phil show was freakin hot last year but Sat night in Boca was FUCKING BRUTAL.
Morrissey came out blazin with 'The Queen is Dead' which was no big surprise because he's been opening up with it for the majority of the tour. Brought me back directly to the dark days of high school . . . I was unlovable and Morrissey spoke to me. This time tho it was happy happy and DAMN I wish I were 15 again.
He made it thru 'Intl Playboys' only to confess that he was pretty sure he was gonna die from the heat and that we should continue without him. Pretty much from that moment I knew that dispite the fans going nuts and a particularly happy fan 6th row center (moi, oc) that Mozz was gonna call this one in and get back the bus and some AC.
With that I went to get a cocktail, I was dying myself. One thing I love about Mizner (one of the few) is that they serve big ole double coktails . . . full of ice!! By the time I got back to my seat we were into 'Girlfriend' and you know what??? The show rocked out from there!!! I slammed that weak cocktail and jammed some ice in my bra and started really being able to get into it, I mean shit I was 6th row center reliving the salad days!!! Mozz was changing his shirts after every song and at one point went briefly bare chested (oo la la). I had never seen so much Dolce and Gabanna in my life. Poor Mozz.
There was a really nice 'Auld Lang Syne' jam into the electric 'How Soon is Now' to close the show. It was obvious that Morrissey had had enough of the heat. From 'Please, Please' to the end the songs felt rushed.
As for the band, Mozz has done a great job with his band. It took 4 guitars to do what Johnny Marr used to do but they did a really great job, I liked the sound and although there was no explorative jamming of any kind you could tell that these guys had some chops. Especially the drummer very talented and shit he must have dropped 50 lbs playing in that heat.
All in all Morrissey came on at 9pm and left the stage at 10:30pm . . . OUCH. I cant really blame him like I said it was freaking hot but I felt a littel ripped off. Word is that hes hanging it up after this tour and Id hate for the last time to be a called in show. But it was for the most part . . . called in. He should have a littel convo with his booking agent about South Florida in the summer.
A word about Kristine Young, the opening act. Caterwaul. There that is my word.
Excellent read there, Schnee! Never thought I would see a Moz review on the zone. One of my all time favorites! Nice looking setlist too. Especially 'Disappointed'!
Nice review Schnee! I just knew that I'd find Verve in here too.
Wow, I had no idea that this might be his last tour. . .
Glad you got to see him - even under such painful conditions as you described. It must've been dangerously hot and humid in there.
I'm not a big fan of Morrissey, but I AM a big fan of "big ole double coktails"!!
And I'm always happy to see a good review, thanks.
AWESOME REVIEW!
