I had too much fun at this whacked out uber jam on Planet Medeski!
2 sets (about 1:15 each) and a Cream encore outdoors at Montalvo's Garden Theatre.
Scofield was wild in the jam and cool when allowing the rest of the boys to play. Billy Martin was a bit subdued mostly, but had some great solos. He didn't do too much with various percussion items, and had a smaller kit. Chris Wood was steady throughout, and had several standout song into/extended solos. John Medeski was his usual madman self when playing (plenty of organ) and calm when watching and/or directing his bandmates.
A great time.
Now on to Phil Sunday at The Greek!
My first MSMW or MMW show. What have I been waiting for all for these years!
I was amazed at everyone. I expected Medeski to be a madman and he delivered. Without a live point of reference, i thought that both Billy and Chris were spot on...both were a joy to watch. Scofield, on the other hand, I expected to be somewhat subdued and low in the mix, out of respect for Medeski, but no, he ripped it up! He and John traded long lines back and forth on a number of occasions (especially in Little Walter Rides Again) and was really aggressive on the Sunshine of My Life encore. Damn.
I'll be at the Fillmore tonight. If this is what they could do a the staid Villa Montalvo, I can't begin to imagine The Fillmore...
I'm taking my 15yo son to The Greek on Sunday (his first Dead family experience!), and will try to talk him into The Fillmore tonight. That should be an amazing weekend for both of us...
My recommendation to all is to see this band tonight
I've been hemming and hawing over the fillmore show tonight, the caravan to santa barbara leaves early saturday...but this band has been getting great reviews from everyone...maybe I'll be there!
Sleep on the way to SB. See MSMW tonight. Simple.
Shit, I totally forgot about this show and I can't make it to the Fillmore. Was is sold out (I live & work about 15 minutes away from there), was the crowd on their feet, and how was the sound?
Villa Montalvo/The Garden Theater is such a great place, but they keep the DBs down so low that I've been disappointed with shows there in the past.
Not sure if it was sold out but there were plenty of open seats...it was a cold (yeah, CA cold) Thursday evening, so it may have been under subscribed.
It certainly wasn't the normal Villa Montalvo sit-down and clap politely crowd, but it wasn't a dancefest either. The crowd was great and appreciative with a handful of people dancing. Certainly the most *smoke* I've ever seen at this venue. The sound level wasn't intense, but certainly was acceptable. We were up front, so the mix and the sound quality were spectacular.
A good night for most...
Show last night was ridiculous. That "Julia" was just beautiful and the "Sunshine of Your Love" encore was smoking. I would definitely recommend getting to the Fillmore tonight or tomorrow night... I'm going to be at Ashkenaz for Will Bernard's farewell show tonight but I might hit up the Fillmore tomorrow. They played a solid 2 hours and 20 minutes with a 1/2 hour break... Crowd was a little stuffy compared to when MMW played there 2 years ago (Sco brings ou the squares) and the cops were citing people for smoking weed, but other than that good vibes all around...
anybody got an extra(s) for the brooklyn show?
its a friends birthday.
THANKS!
