Heard it was off the chain... This tour is going to be insane!
Awesome show, cann't write a full review at the moment, but it was a lot of fun, actually impressive by J. Green. Another class act by Phil Lesh. Dancin, smiling, fun are three good words to use. Ok, i'm sure more detail reviews are coming, but the show rocked!!!!!!
Cryptical was played after The Other One.
Amended update -
Speedway>Other 1>Cryptical>Casey Jones>Brown Sugar >Franklins Tower

*Brokedown Palace w/ JG on acoustic.
The show started at about 6:20
1st. set ended around 7:35.
2nd. set started around 8:30.
Show was finished around 9:50 or so.
Lots of teases throughout the second set too.
Gotta Serve Somebody was real nice. :-)
Dixie Down was too. :-)
That venue is excellent. Very small & intimate setting. Sort of like a mini Hollywood Bowl.
THANK THE STARS FOR JOHN FREAKING MOLO!!!
night they drove old dixie down--greatly improved over the independent--of course they soundchecked it this afternoon.
sugaree had me missing joan less this time 'round.
they also soundchecked a dylan tune that I couldn't quite make out. turned out to be gotta serve somebody--that I thoroughly enjoyed.
nice to see brown sugar reappear. hadn't seen it since mardi gras.
rained during setbreak. some friendly boos from peeps not wanting their sightlines blocked with the antirain apparatus at the soundboard up top. security was being a pain about keeping the aisles clear. someone fell and hit their head or something right near the entrance to the section above loge that proved a bit chaotic for the ushers when the black shirts told people to head down to loge as a redirect to return to seats.
swear they played dixie down in the first set.......
larry on electric violin on one of the JGe tunes......
hoodies $50
T shirts $30
oversized aforementioned $2 more.
kids Ts were $22
tour posters signed by phil $80
JGe green vinyl ($20 or maybe $15)
swear they played dixie down in the first set.......>>>
That's correct.
larry on electric violin on one of the JGe tunes......>>>
That was nice too.
I bought the $25 shirt special with Big Brown on the front. I couldn't pass it up.
I got redirected during the aisle blockage. I saw another medical attention incident by where I was sitting. Looked like someone had bad drugs or something.
Lots of wookies and wookettes as my wife pointed out. :-)
I thought it was excellent to see Phil put his arm around Jackie as they walked offstage after the second set. That moment seemed to mean a lot.
The show was killer, great venue. I also bought the Big brown tee and the organic hooded sweatshirt
Who sings? Is it mostly Jackie?
I ask because I haven't seen Phil since the last Red Rocks shows.
Thanks!

i can't emphasize enough how great this tour is going to be...
when jackie came back onstage after the show, jackie picked up HIS JERRY DOLL and held it up to the dispersing crowd and shook it in reverence. he always has a gumby onstage as well (i think his fans play find the gumby)
here's my setlist, the letter j & p representing who sang. jackie made the songs his own, and jerry would have been proud.
golden road p & j/everyone sang

loved the combination, larry cambell smoked and they all enjoyed jackie. i've been singing his praises for a while now.
i'm so happy that phil had this vision. he hugged jackie as they walked off stage first set, twas heartwarming. hearing these great songs with renewed enthusiasm was a true gift.
my husband had jackie sign my ticket for me, awwwww....
lisa
So they pulled a Ryan Adams and played So Hard To Find My Way twice?
Or did they split it up and reprise it to end the set?
How did they sound outside of the songs?

I thought for a tour opener well for any time in the tour the show was good WE had a great time.I don't think any of the setlists are right yet thus proving how good it really was! The standouts for me were.the ending of the first set was great so was most of the second but "Serve sombody","speedway" and "The other one were sic...... Thought the whole time " I sure am glad to be seeing much more of this tour............get out there all that are still on the fence and buy your tickets Now all the show will sellout when the word starts gettin around. THANKS Phil and Friends looking forward to seeing you at least 15 more times this tour.....Catchabigone/david
by the way SERVE SOMEBODY was off the hook...... In my limited experience( first show was( 3/24/73 and hundredes after that) It had to be to be the best version of this song ever played.................oh and don.t worry about the jams they took us THERE and I am sure they will take you THERE too.......
Interesting set 2..
Encore: Brokedown Palace
Thank you posters
Sound was tight and energetic. Never did it feel like a warm up or sound like the first show of a P&F tour! The kid is HOT! He puts it all out there and it works. They are all having more fun than I've seen them have in a long time. This band sounds like they have been playing together for years.
As the tour progresses I would expect more exploratory jams and mind bending moments.
Hang on to your hyper-stellar suspenders pal, it's going to get freeky!
PHIL has a new rig, molo pointed it out to us!
2 cabinets of 4x10 and a 1x18
that sounds great!
molitz's mix was very distant to say the least , not his fault !
Full Phil wind up and BOMB intro to the other one.
very strong show! especially for being 1st show.
Greek Morning Dew!
PLEASE!
oh and a PLAYIN' too.

I was bummed at this point because there was no Phil bomb intro to The Other One. It was still great to hear the Other One>Cryptical though.
so was larry cambell tearing it up or putting everyone to sleep? i was worried about this tour, due to not having a real powerhouse on lead, like trey, warren, jimmy, or even barry. i always thought larry had a simple rock style for more song oriented playing then improvisation like phil & friends. looking forward to buffalo.
back in san clemente after a fun 24-hour run to SB and back...
my thoughts on last night's show: the band and the music was like Dylan meets Bakersfield. Jackie's definitely got an act of hiw own and it blends well with what the rest of the band is doing. We laughed and called the first set the Jackie Greene Review since he was featured so much. Larry's far more prominent that he has been with any other PLF lineup. he really stepped it up last night in the 2nd set, his playing was the biggest surprise of the night. Molitz never really had the chance to get too spacey or anything, the arrangements were fairly spares, straight-ahead rock-n-roll. Molo was a monster as usual. overall a very tight first show and should be interesting to watch this band get it's legs as the tour rolls on. if you wanted longer spacey instrumental passages last night was not it, and this band may not lean to far in that direction. But for solid twangy rock n roll they were nice and tight, with a lot of high energy.
that's how it felt to me at least...
enjoy the tour! KK
I posted this in the other stuff section under the loose lucy video thread.
but I do need to hear some jams >>>
Last night's show was chock full of jams (no "space" to speak of) and song teases , especially the second set. Larry Campbell has such a smooth tone, it's amazing. I felt he was the "instigator" , that is , egging JG on with encouragement to extend songs with some jamming. Lots of interplay between the 2.
Larry was using 2 Fender twin reverbs and a Vox AC-30. Jackie was using some AC-30's also.
Larry - Strat and Tele's (and a fiddle:-)).There was a peddle steel guitar set up , but it wasn't used. Jackie - Tele's, and an SG, also the Epiphone equivelent of the ES-335 I believe.
I'm anxiously awaiting a download for this. :-)
C'mon kids. Let's get something on a torrent.
btree if you don't mind.
When Phil plays this side we get you something within a few hours.
yeah, c'mon you f'n west coast slackers
Sounds like things went great. Excellent.
k........Lotta good music at this show. Jackie has a great voice and energy. Personly I liked parts of the 2nd set........Cold Rain and Snow kicked ass....molo ripped it up on the drums!!!!! I really wasn't into any of the Jackie songs...sorry I just wasn't. Gotta Servr Somebody was high energy and good then came a Casey jones>Brown Sugar> and Franklins.fun songs. Was there any real jamming at this show..some cool long phycedlic exploritory guitar jams? Unforntunely not. I hate to say it but I miss Jimmy, Warren, Kimock, Trey or even the moe. guy. Fun show 4 sure but I thought it was lacking in the lead guitar spot. cya
the mics went out a few times, that was disappointing...but it was very high energy,
i can't see em again, hope they do more in the winter/spring.
That's a sweeeet looking setlist!
Back in palm springs, through malibu and santa monica home, show was off the hook! Greene and Campbell played off each other so fucking well. When Larry took it way out there, Jackie was there to bring back the crunch and when the crunch was happening Larry took it and smoothed it out to a warm fuzz, it was a real fucking great high energy show. Molo was a machoine as usual, Phil sounded so good and the clearly loves playing with JG, as he should. Amazing venue too, very kind heads inside, weather was perfect...the band came out and I could still see the ocean in the afternon light off to the right. Gotta serve someone was super tight, it actually reminded me in a very strange way, while I was geting a beer in the high end of the venue, of a phish sound from 97 how tight it was with 6 guys instead of 4, I mean it was so tight and crunchy, it was really good. Perfect lyrics, Jackie belted it out all night and was stomping his leg, and perfect chord progeressions and solos...WOW. It was hot. I thouroughly enjoyed all of Jackie's tunes, probably I'm so Gone, was good at the Independent and way better in SB, Cold Rain and Snow was hot and so was Brown Sugar! 9 out of 10 for me. See you in Chicago I hope.
Forget the setlist, what I wanna know is: Did Crimedawg and his crew get in to see the show?
Without doubt, the most fun I've had in a long long time. My ribs hurt today from laughing so bloody much. Logistical issues got us there late, causing us to miss first couple tunes. Better living through chemistry led us to the Godiva Man for our pre-show nutrition, hate Phil shows on an empty stomach. Bad case of giggles ensued, end result being a poorly listened to first set. But what we did hear and focus on was grounds for concern. I couldn't help but look over at my gf and say, "If I were Phil's mom, I would recommend he find some new friends"
'Dixie Down' is a wretched choice for a cover. If Phil is going to showcase younger contemporary artists, i.e. Ryan Adams and J. Greene, how about a song from this century? Too cliche for this listener. The Bird Song/Sugaree massacre that ensued likely prompted an earlier than planned set-break as the band looked awkward and not quite sure of themselves. Or maybe they felt the beloved Jerome Garcia roll over in his grave at the beating his darling 'Sugaree' took. Either way, it was a beautiful venue, gorgeous evening and just so great to see Phil on stage again. With our low expectations even lowered, the 2nd set could only get better.
A beautiful dichotomy emerged in the second set. Seeing so many shows from so many different bands over the last dozen years, its become evident that the GD not only had the Jerry factor, but frankly, their songbase so far exceeded likely the entire remaining jam community combined. So when the first few riffs of Cold Rain ripped open the second set, I found myself belting out lyric to lyric some of music's most bittersweet folktales. You know, 'when you marry me a wife, she's been trouble all my life', I couldn't help but feel like my last Biscuit show was some horrible Karaoke night with broken teleprompters. Why even bother? (kudos to STS9 and Lotus etc..for knowing better).
But lets not get carried away here, the GD were no rap band either, so when CRAS segued into a pretty spacy interlude, order was restored in the Philzone. A solid rendition by JG on his next tune had the gang in my aisle in stiches. Leg kicks, tight skinny pants, spiked hair, and a lot of sass had us rolling in the aisles. All that was missing was 'Xena' and the cat fight was on. Jackie was dropping some 'tude' on us unsuspecting, and dammit bitch, it was working, YOU HERE ME!!!!!!!!!
Phil's turn at the mike, and the ageless New Sp Boog. emerges. Throat cleared, prepared to serenade the entire loge, I begin belting out the lines, only to my chagrin, It's aria time for me. Who forgot the words, fellas? You can't expect me to carry this whole tunne for you, do you. So NSB morphed into NSB jam for you setlist sticklers, and jam they did, and then some more, and some more, and someone mistakenly tried to pop off a few verses, but it was the Bomb-dropper himself's turn to belt one out. The unmistakeable force of scorching other one began to take form, with our aisle once again descnding into full mayhem. "Spa nish Lady' dangled on the tip of our tongues, our excitement mounting with every rising bar, until the unthinkable occurs....Phil Fogets the WORDS!!!!!!! 40 years of Other 1s, and he can't pull out 'Spanish Lady'.
But fear not, our bass-playing friend, we had you're back, because you know what, screw the words and play that bleeping bass to your fingers bleed, you here, because you and your friends up there seemed to have worked out a few kinks there during the set break. With four on the floor, you plucked and we funked ourselves into a symbiotic state of bliss thats still ringing in my ears, and for that Phil, and , of course, we must include your friends, we are forever grateful.
But hold on, we're not done yet, for as we neared our collective red-lines, Mr. Casey Jones arrived, and we know how this story ends. Lets just say it doesn't slow down at the end. No, a small wager passed amongst our aisle as to who would spontaneously combust first, you or us. And if that wasn;t nasty enough, Mr Greene himself scorched his way through an incendiary reading of the Stones 'Brown Sugar' (and I aint talking about Fred and Wilma).. The highlight of the evening for us, JG left little doubt he's more than tasted his fair share of the sacred sweets, and we thank him for how he enlightened us to this.
Blood Pressures teetering dangerously, JG a heart-wrenching version of Brokedown Palace could not have been better placed, as we hugged our loved ones and reflected back to the days ago, when our bearded friend would so wisely remind us 'to listen to the river sing sweet songs, that rocked our souls' And with that, we said a quiet prayer for our late friend, hoping in our hearts that he be RIP, for after this performance, we most certainly were. A fantastic time, all the way around. Peace to all.

LMFAO
Barry, we must have been at diferent shows.
They were just a small tadd rough around the edges, but that can be expected from first of tour.
They flat out rocked though. The kid is great. He comes out on the stage and I thought he looked like a 12 yr old Bob Dylan.
Just before they started,he kissed his gumby and held it up so that Phil could kiss it too. Kinda cute, but pure smokin business after that.
The kid has it all. And it all works.
What a great tour this is going to be.
Just got back home in SoCal. Less than 6 hrs from the Greek Theater.
As good as Saturdays show was, Tonights show was at least twice as good.
That second of the repeated JGe tunes should really be I'm so gone to end the first set.
No time for a review at the moment...later though!
any idea what the second set jackie song was? anybody remember the lyrics? i could prolly figure it out
I think the tune in the second set was called prayer for spanish harlem.

I think there might be something missing between New Speedway and Casey Jones, or maybe it was just one helluva jam
I really had a great time at this show, the venue is small, beautiful, intimate and outdoors!! The entry procedure was a pain in the ass, two wristbands? But it was a mellow crowd so things went smoothly. GA was not too packed at all, that was nice. Bathroom and beer lines moved quickly and aside from four sprinkles at setbreak, the weather treated us very well.
The band sounded great, they were loose, joking and laughing, having a good and knuckle bumping like crazy. Who taught phil to do that? Between the two shows he had to have done it 50 times.
The music was suprising, don't think anyone called a Golden Road opener, definitely the first time I've heard it. The overall sound was very bluesy. Definitely the blues-iest Birdsong I've ever heard, with a nice big jam coming out of it, this was not your run of the mill acoustic bobby birdsong, I really liked the changed.
In general, I was more pleased with Larry than ever before. He and Jackie have really locked in, they were together all night, I think they make a great pair, although it got me thinking about a Jackie/David Nelson guitar pairing...I think that would hot!!
I feel bad for Particle Dude, I really like the guy but he did nothing worth mentioning, except maybe knuckle bump phil but I already covered that.
I like Molo, he can play any style...the tour it's the Molo GiddyUp! The Nelson shows left me feeling Molo had mellowed a bit, he was more like hot lava than an errupting volcano. This time around he's still laid back but there's a little pep to it...he's got a little giddyup!
Phil sounded good but he was the trainwreck of the night. It was BAD. At the end of the first set, he clunked it big time at the end of I'm So Gone, I dunno, did he forget what song he was playing? He hit a wrong cord, the tempo faltered and it all went to hell. They got it back, did a 12 second wrap up on the song and that was they end of set one. Phil was grinning and laughing at himself, he went over to Jackie and they laughed it over together. It was wasn't the demise of the show, but luckily it doesn't happen often.
Phil's vocals were off in several spots too...at first I was thinking, with all the focus on jackie and his vocal talents, maybe phil just didn't put in any time at practice. But now that I've slept on it, I wonder more if it's Jackie rubbing off on Phil? Jackie definitely plays with phrasing and tempos, lagging on a line and then rushing to get the full phrase in, in time. Jackie manages to pull it off, maybe Phil's just trying to do something new? Either way more practice would help
And I'll have to agree, being able to hear Phil's musical directions in the PA--not good, I don't like it, it's like knowing how a magician makes a rabbit appear, or seeing strings on a puppet...some things aren't meant to be heard.
As for Jackie, he was great, love his style. He was better than I expected him to be, I'd say he's ahead of the learning curve, he's got more jam in him than I thought. The setlist still had a lot of songs in it, but the jams were big!
Loose Lucy and Birdsong were great. Cold Rain and Snow was a definite winner, not an all out brain melter, but spacier than I expected, I had zero expectation of it, so I was surprised. Gotta Serve Somebody was a huge jam! The start of the second set was big, they really came out swinging! and it never really slowed, the whole second set was big fun and big jams!
I'm excited for the end of the tour, I can't wait to see how this lineup develops, I think Jackie is a quick learner and he'll be developing more with every show!
Yay Phil & Friends, looking forward to doing it again!!!
you're missing THE OTHER ONE! (b/4 Cryptical)
Opps, I see that...
Actually I'm undecided, I'm not sure if the Cryptical was before of after O1, I've got a few things written down but I don't think they (the notes I made) came sequentially?

Thank you (((Phil and Friends))) for taking me higher than ever before - very excellent... Jackie Greene is outstanding and even if he is a young dylan look-a-like, he has the style and expertise to match it and he can sing!! MOLO is so strong and Larry so accomplished and strong that he enters the ZONE - the Phil Zone - what a place. I wish I could make it to more shows - it's just got to be on your list if you can make it. Thanks for letting me drop in for a quick note since I don't usually frequent these pages - this band is great. I am eternally grateful and I still have a smile on my face.
Cryptical was after the Other One.
I'll bet $50 right now that I'm correct.
Emily, another outstanding review!!
Love your take on shows, it's the next best thing to being there!
My $ 50 bet is still on.
any word on recordings from this tour?
will they be on bt.etree.org??

Anotherjg....>>.. I don't usually frequent these pages..<<..
One post is IMO..all it takes to be a Zoner..
2 posts in 2+ years..incredible..
Thanks for the reviews everybody..
thanks for the words and thoughts Emily!!
Still waiting for the upload...
Well, well, well...this east coaster enjoyed the two cali shows- I will just review SB here. The show and band gets a stern B. Good show, the jams were very good at times but the Jackie songs were lacking to my taste , IMHO, I just did not see them as relevent at all. The set list was strong and the songs were well played, but my criticism is that they are popish verisons of jamming songs - perhaps the limmit on playing time got in their heads (it is near a school and needs to end at 10pm). Good show, but how about a light show phil, or some tie-dyes or anything?....boring stage. I have seen phil and friends about 75 times and the dead 99 times. I know it is tough to re-create the sound but this line up seems the most tame of all the line ups. I hope Jackie hits the leads better by the NYC shows. My recommendation is to add Sless for leads and just ask Jackie to provide some color and vocals. The music can be better. Maybe it was just a warm up. I will review the greek as well. A fun time for sure but tame.
For the love of god somebody please put this up.
For those who don't know, this is now up on the LMA and etree.
I hated Jackie -- He ruined the show for me.
Jerry never performed -- he played.
I can't believe Phil is so lazy to pick this show-boating kid up.
I miss Jimmy Herring -- He let his guitar speak, instead of pointing and holding his hand to his ear (for the crowd to sing) Hey, Jackie, if we want us to sing on Loose Lucy, we will. Keep your hand on your guitar and away from your ear.
Disappointed in Santa Barbara.
