After getting a healthy dose of phil bombs and quintet nuggets in the northeast on fall tour, I am getting pumped for the NYE run in Oakland.

Have never been to HJK before, hoping someone could enlighten about the venue, do's and don'ts?, how the hell I will get back to SF at 3am? Lot scene?

Also, anyone heading to tahoe post NYE, the white stuff is falling down in buckets out there, over 6 feet in the past week, which=powder shots to the face. Woooohooooo!

Let the Good Times Roll!

I didn't go to NYE last year, but I caught GD shows at HJKaiser in the 80s. It's a nice little spot for a show. Many times they (whomever that is) would hold the BART (Lake Merritt station is only a short walk) after official hours to accommodate deadheads. Hopefully, some Bay Area locals can chime in here with updated info. This show will end way late...maybe we can split a cab ride back?

HJKaiser Center is located in a residential neighborhood and the local residents became frustrated with the actions of heads in the late 80s. Everybody, please pee before you leave the show. In other words, respect thy neighbor.

Does anyone have any info regarding band schedules on NYE? I'm guessing/hoping that Crusader Rabbit will do its set BEFORE P&F's two full sets. I received my GDTS-TOO NYE tix yesterday!!!

Just some thoughts...

Does anyone know if the drummer and keys from ratdog are still playing with Les Claypool? Cause if that the case I would think Ratdog will play early, but I also saw that on Derek Trucks website that he will go on first.

My guess:
Derek Trucks
Ratdog
Phil#1
NYE->Crusader Rabbitt w/ Derel Trucks also
Phil#2

I remember reading an article in relix how pissed people around the venue were with the heads. I believe it was 88 or 89 when the Dead stopped playing there. I wonder what changed their mind to let them come back, or Phil.

Thanks for the info Tim

Hey pholks, Well, I'm gonna do it this year! I am making the pilgrimage from the East. I've wanted to do this for years, and my number is up.

So, the Kaiser's in a nice neighborhood, hmmmmmm . . .

Looking for some help here:

Are there any drinking establishments nearby? Recommendations?? Can there be any kind of parking lot scene whatsoever without offending the neighbors? Pre-show fun is a must for me, although disrespectful I am not.

Once inside the venue, what's it like? Is security pretty lax? can you light up etc, with no issues?

Any info is appreciated . . . thanks!

The first Doans Out Y2K + 2 will take place during the post NYE intermission at the Kaiser. This great event will also mark the West Coast debut of the Dank Cats. The anti wharf rat crusders. There will be copious amounts of herbal, liquid and solid doans available courtesy of Linky.

Peace Out

Doans Ya Lata

I hope we don't cross paths New Years, I might want to spit in your face. How could someone in this community be so devoid of human compassion and so full of disrespect for people seeking support for a disease they didn't ask for, and are trying to get help and support for? The Wharf Rats keep to their own space, and are there for themselves, not your entertainment.

Your form of bigotry and hatred is the worst kind.

YOU SUCK!!! You are hurtful, unkind, and worthy of loathing.

Right on Dewit. I just don't understand people like that. I am a Wharf Rat and I for one have never gotten on anyones case for doing whatever they want to do. To each his own. I would no more tell someone that they couldn't smoke a joint because I can't then I would, if I were a diabetic, tell someone that they couldn't eat sugar because I can't. Maybe this fool would rather have met me during the height of my disease when I might have stolen his drugs and money to support my habit. I don't have to live that way today, and the Wharf rats had a large part in making that happen. Maybe the fool never heard the phrase "Do your own thing" because somehow he feels a need to impose his shit on other people by being anti something.

OHHH Yeah Baby!!!!!!

It's time for NYE again & we are psyched!!!

Notes about HJK: Great Lot scene! Smokers section outside! Unless they way oversell, room to move. It's in a Downtown location with NOT a lot of amenities close by. There is a great lawn in front to hang on and toss some disc! Roaming packs of Heads hounds, which my mutt LOVED! Reasonably close by there is a Brewery(closed at the same time last year for renovations)But I heard it is really good. Porto-lets avalible for those in line early.

NYE Bring it on!!!!!!

Hey Schwagg-face, Cannabis and Psychedelics are SACRED SUBSTANCES to be imbibed for specific rituals (a la P&F shows). With your under-25 attitude (let me guess, you're even younger than that), you are GUARANTEED to be a Wharf Rat by 35, or dead for that matter. Grow Up!

Yo Sideshow ! You are truly bogus. Everybody knows that you are a Dank Cat wanna be and a well known Playa Hata. It's true that Cannabis and Psychedelics are SACRED SUBSTANCES. You should be honest and let everyone know that you also consider white - out, spray paint and glue to be sacred for the same reasons.

As for the safty of the venue, all problems will be addressed by Judge Joe Brown.

Peace Out

Doans one and all

Hi,

Myself and a friend are flying into S.F. on December 27th from England. We're taking in the 2 String Cheese shows on the 28th and 29th followed by the 2 P&F shows on the 30th and NYE. Never having been to San Francisco before, could anybody let us know what we can expect and things to do and see whilst we're there. We will be flying back on the 3rd January.

Also, does anyone know of a good shop selling CD's of jam bands and related music in the San Francisco area? We keep hearing the name Amoeba, and wonder if this is going to be our best bet for getting the sort of stuff which record companies seem unwilling to release over here.

Any help or advice that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated and you can either reply here or mail me privately at veneta1@supanet.com

Thanks in anticipation.

Peace,
Bob

Yes, this venue gets REALLY packed, usually no security presence. I also meant no disrespect to Wharf Rats, I totally respect your endeavor. I count myself lucky to never have those kind of problems in my life. As for Dank Cat and your possee, I picture, lets see, baseball cap backwards, 1 earring, Dave Mathews T-Shirt, Old Navy pants, Sketchers sneakers, shaved head, lots of high fives all around to yer 'bro's. Hey, have a nice life! Me a wannabe? Well, I'd wannabe a musician as good as any of the guys in PLQ and be making music this good, yes, then call me a wannabe, please! Whats up with the Wharfrats. I used to be a wharfrat and ran the table for years. Now I am on the other side and for me anyway, life is much more fun with Doans. I still have many good friends in the rats. I ran into Alfie recently in SF and he is doing good, going to school for computer programming or something. As for the wharfrat philosophy, I think it's insidious and evil in it's 12 step slavery. I've considered myself an anti-wharfrat for a long time. I'm glad to see others come forward.

My theory about addiction: 99% of people that have addiction problems started with cigarettes very young. Nicotine, with it's 20-minute up/withdrawal cycle, creates the addictive personality. At an early age, the body's chemistry is changed forever to crave every drug in this manner (especially physically addictive ones, but even non-addictive ones). I have known very few people who ended up in 12-step that didn't start smoking very young. How about it folks, some input/opinions? That's what drives me so crazy about political "conservatives" that hate pot so much, but love tobacco! And of course it's a grand conspiracy between the tobacco companies and the government to keep this a secret to keep pot illegal!

tomh, I am sure you think you are being funny, but those kinds of ludicrous comments are hurtful and unwelcome. There are millions of people who have lost loved ones due to drug abuse, and I think it is admirable to want to better your life and other people's lives by utilizing a lifestyle that promotes clarity, kindness, and community. It is selfish pricks like you that lead to 2 million people in prison because society sees the crime-ridden, do-nothing for humanity idiots like you that glorify the kill-as-many-brain-cells-as-possible and screw everybody else attitude that is extremely negative and detrimental to productive society. I am not a wharf rat, but I for one would welcome the company of a sober person at a show long before I would welcome someone like you that could eventually be responsible for ruining our scene because you want to get fucked up and disrespect people who actually care about the music. I hope I don't see you on nye because I will be tempted to resort to violence. Stay away from our scene. You idiots are not welcome.

Oops, right, this is the SHOW posting site, although someone should change the heading to the DATE so it's on top. Now, on New Year's, there's Derek Trucks, then Ratdog, then Crusader Rabbit, then Phil. Seems to me there is really only one Phil set, the one that starts at midnight. Doubt there's time for another set between 6 pm and midnight. We shall see.

Holycow, please let me clarify before you resort to violence. The wharfrats are fundamentally a 12 step group and members are encouraged to follow the steps. Step one is to admit you are powerless and need to turn your will and life over to the care of a higher power, which ultimately means the group. This approaches the definition of a cult and as such is a far greater evil than any drug. Secondly, after being in the wharfrats for over ten years I would say that 90% of people there are not hard core addicts, but rather kids who have become convinced they are addicts by the wharfrats continual presence. Finally, the wharfrats totally black and white view of the world in which all drugs are equally bad is narrow minded and detrimental to personal development. These are just some of the reasons I am opposed to the wharfrats and 12 step groups in general. If you still want to resort to violence, all I can say is bring it on. I haven't been in a good fight since Slayer a couple of weeks ago.

Hold on just a minute,I'm a wharfrat and I was a hard drug user. H was my drug of choice and I was on methadone for a year,I've been clean for 2 1/2 years by the grace of my higherpower.I don't judge other peoples choice to use drugs,I just know I can't.If not for the wharfrats and 12 step program I would most likely be dead,it's not about the drugs,it's about trying to fill a void in my life with something outside myself.I've done that since I was very young,I started smoking pot at ten,I'm now 35,I've done it all and you know what this music is so much better clean,Tom you have a right to your apinion,if you really knew any thing about 12 step programs you'd see that your the one that is narrow minded. But I'm not here to change your mind,I'm just grateful I'm still alive, and can injoy this music, and grow spiritualy. And if you think by starting a anti-wharfrat group will make you feel better about the fact that there are people who can live and injoy life without the use of drugs,go ahead.Ask Phil what he thinks of the wharfrats,I think he would disagree with you.
Happy holidays to you all,and see you at NYE,and yes I'll be at the wharfrat table.

One thing that I don't understand is how people who chose to stay sober can assume that anyone who gets loaded can't possibly be going for the music too. Does it have to be so black and white? Can psychedelic music and a good buzz peacefully co-exist? I say yes. Not just from personal experience but also by definition.

Wise up everyone. There's a new sheriff in down -- The Dank Cats. I rule that The Dank Cats should be given a space equal to the wharf rats where they could display their wares as tastefully as the rats.

I was moved recently when I was fortunate enough to overhear the following dialogue:

Guy # 1 : Got any medicine?

Guy # 2: What kind of medicine?

Guy # 1 : Any kind. As long as it's medicine !

This is what I call sharing !!

Dig it.

ha!! tom, if you have the balls to go to a slayer concert, then you definitely deserve respect. I got yo back.

On nye i'm thinking that its gonna be 2 phil sets and then crusader rabbit at midnight. I have a feeling weir wants to sing sugar mags when the ball drops. Personally don't care either way as long as phil is slappin me around with his modulus.

Dank Cats? Wharf Rats? Sounds like factionism to me. The Rabi nailed it when he said "it's not about the drugs,it's about trying to fill a void in my life with something outside myself." Bingo.
After I lost my first love and slipped into depression almost three years ago, I started looking for ways to fill the hole in my soul. It's been a process. I understand and agree with the sacramental use of doses and dank, but there is a fine line between using something on special occasions to help furthur spiritual development and depending on a substance to make it through each day.
This is something that I have forgotten in the past month. I thought I had found the One. She was the one who took me to my first Phil show on 4/20. In fact, she's been with me at every Quintet show I've ever been to-both Red Rocks, Raleigh, and Charlotte(never made it to a dead show due to restrictive parents and not being old enough to drive).
About a month ago I lost faith in her and have been in a downward spiral since. Looking for something to fill the void, I even tried H for the first(and last time). The past week was especialy rough as I went through more headies than you could imagine. Ok, maybe not, but more than I should have. Now I'm thinking about going sober. I don't know why I'm sharing this with y'all, but maybe it's because community helps the individual find something meaningful outside of the self. I don't think the Wharf Rats is for me just yet(in regards to Sideshow Bob's tobbaco theory: never smoked a cigarette in my life), but I can see how they help others and I respect what they are trying to do.
I'm flying out to San Fran for the cheese on the 28th and checking out both shows at the Kaiser, which will be my first without the One. Part of me wonders what it might be like if I was sober at one of the phil shows. The other part of me realizes it's been way too long since I explored my consciousness with the proper sacrament and hopes that the music of the 31st will light the path. As for the music, here's my wishlist....

Celebration
Casey Jones
Dire Wolf
Shakedown
Bertha
Lady With A Fan
Stella Blue
Truckin
Eyes
the Wheel
friend of the devil
dark star
china
rider
darkstar
night of 1000 stars
mountains
unbroken chain
just a little light
bird song
cryptical
blues for allah
other one
help
slipknot
sugaree
slipknot
Franklins
I GIVE UP...too many good songs, however they play em will be right by me

I'll be flying in with the family on JetBlue from JFK on the nite of the 29th. Any fellow zoners on board? My 3 year old daughter, Casey, is a veteran of more than 10 P&F shows the past 2 summers. She ended up at her first indoor show, the Beacon on 12/1, when the babysitter crapped out the day of the show.
We'll be meeting up with our friends and their 3 kids and be one big happy family at the Marriott-Emeryville, about 5 miles from HJK arena. After 200+ shows since '77 this is my first time in SF(ok,Oakland). Can't wait!!! Look for us at the shows. Casey will be the one dancing on my shoulders wearing her blue, sound proof headphones
See you there. Happy holidays and peace to all.

I'm getting psyched for these shows. Haven't seen PLQ since Red Rocks this summer. By the way, I was by there last week and they are doing some serious renovations. It will be interesting to see the new Red Rocks looks like next summer. As for being sober or high. It don't matter to me, some people are assholes either way and others just want to have fun and get off on the music. It's the music that matters, how one enjoys it is a personal decision. Peace

The grass in front of the Kaiser will be the best place...there is no "lot" to speak of...just side streets etc....the roof top of the Marriot parking structure usually goes off...but it's a bit of a walk to the venue.

Well a TAXI is the best way to go everything is so close, it hardly costs a thing. And on finding mind-expanding help, (do you really need help expanding your mind) anyway whatever it is your looking for, I'm sure it will find you, the "lot" which is a lawn accross the street is a pleasant option for mingling and such!

Thanks little bride (my best friend that I'm bringing also happens to be my little bride! (if your username rings true)) and although I'm trying entirely to stay out of the above thread that has nothing to do with the NYE shows, I don't "need" help. That is to say I can of course expand the mind without any help and I'm happy to say that I do every day. but...on particularly special occasions such as a NYE show in Oakland, a little help goes a long way in helping me see things in a new light. literally and figuratively. Just trying to get a feel for what the scene is like.

Thanks again and have a great show

Hey guys Im an east coaster and Ive only seen a handful of Kaiser's but heres the scoop : The HJK is like a religious building when it comes to the Dead-scene. You will feel the ghost's and see the spirits. Check the Dead-base--they played the shit out that lil place. There is always a little scene outside but the real parties are the hotels or local bay-area clubs/hot-spots/etc. When yer in Oakland it is kind of the Alpha/Omega of grateful-deadness. The beginning and the end. Have fun. Be safe. The sound is not always the greatest but the HJK is just so cool and old school it doesnt matter. Security, what security???Just kidding...its kind of like a rented building when the dead-fam play there so bring yer best headies--never guess who you might puff with. HAHAHAHA.. Heres a qwik tip---DONT FUCK WITH THE BLANKET PEOPLE IN THE FRONT ON THE FLOOR!!!!they will eat you alive!!and send you back to the back. If yer not related to those peeps they will push you back.NO LIE!!!EAST COASTERS BEWARE!!!!they have been standing there since like 1965 and they aint making room fer yer touch-of-grey asses(like me!!)!!.

Oh--about that anti-wharf-rat thing...the WR are awesome and have been a concrete part of my GD experience since the beginning. I think that guy was just making a joke about them and some dont think that life/death addictive habits are something to joke about. I think to each his own. IMHO.

Greetings from SF (as they say out here)
Four Pzoners just waking up.
By all counts last night was one of the best played shows I have ever seen. Flawless second set. I mean not a hair out of place.

You could tell that it touched Phil becuase his Donor/Thank You rap was outta site. Not one of the usual 10 he rotates this was unique and full of LOVE. encouraged the crowd to " 'now go out and make some music of your own' "

Longer posting later but let it suffice to say that evryone walked out of there in relative silence. Very good song selection and very very very well played.

This will definately rate as a HARTFORD-ASBURY level show no question.

Long post later but will say this about Ratdog.

There was a seminal moment during slipknot where I thought that people should not put Bobby in a box of preconcieved notions and just let him "do his own thing". Becuase he sure does it well. They have devolped a completely unique style that either you like or don't but there is no doubt that they are getting the job done.

Just a really really good trip so far.
All things are dovetailing and really coming together.

team photos today I heard.

Where were the bombs last night? From my perspective last nights show lacked intensity. While well played and technically very good something was missing. Perhaps its all part of the buildup of momentum leading up to tonight. I guess thats why we have to go to more than one show. It's all good and it's New Years Eve. Happy New Year

Rain made things a real bitch getting in...once inside...Ratdog started right at 6:00...a little shaky at first, but then really had some moments where the whole venue was rocking along. Though sold out, the Kaiser was not as oversold as 3-15-00 where things were seriously beyond fire code packed...Phil started at 8:50...great sets...really strong first set I thought...love King Sol. etc...JIMMY HERRING PLAYED CIRCLES AROUND WARREN! (I love Warren's stuff, but Jimmy is waaay better...) I can't focus enought to post much more...for those going tonight...next to zero security...had two Sierra Nevadas in my backpack that made it in fine...pipe in pocket = no problem...SUPER smoky inside...it sucks that people were able to smoke cigarettes (but I guess that's the price we pay to be able to puff down...)

More intelligent review in the next few days.

Happy New Years to all.

well what can you say about last night's show. I don't see a lot of postings this morning, so I'll give my two cents: Ratdog - haven't ever seen them but was fairly impressed. Bobby sounded great and his song selection played well. I missed the first half hour but feel confident in saying the other 1 1/2 hours duly sufficed. Eyes of the World sounded great, very Brandford-esque circa 1991. smooth and flowing. I liked the acoustic Blackbird- El Paso. Bobby really does the cowboy croon well. The closer was a big surprise, Help-Slip-Franklin's Tower. I was kind of hoping to get it from Phil and the boys but I'll take it where I can get it. Ratdog really took it up a notch and smoked this one, blowing some minds for sure, mine included. Kudos Bob. That being said, lets talk Phil. In true honesty Phil's band crushed anything Ratdog had to offer. Big long flowing jams with lots of teases. It seemed to be a China Cat off the top, then veering left into some other territory before landing in a FAT ASS Shakedown. Let the games begin. Smithers, release the hounds....Loose Lucy followed with some absolutely ripping honky tonk piano from Rob, great vocals too. The boys really took their time feeling their way thru and when they eventually hit the St Stephens - Golden Road, the roof came down. You just can't fuck with it. I found Phil's vocal stylings extremely heartfelt (and soulful even) during the last verse of St Stephens. Dare I say a tear almost formed.... then BAM! Golden Road with more big time guns than an Afghan border patrol....My one critical comment for the evening is this.... PUMP UP THE JUICE. Had a hard time hearing the guitars, and the bass was often boomy... maybe the room I'm sure. But I thought it could have been about 30% louder...... maybe we're getting old and deaf. Second set was very, shall we say, intimate..... Vibeeeee.... Lots of music for the night and I must say the sandman was calling my name a bit. But that disappeared when they hit The Other One - Eleven- Scarlet. Absolutely slamming. You can't say enough about this band. Looking forward to another great one tonight. Happy New Years all.... Near and Far!

Quick review - I was supposed to meet up with a lot of the Zoners but when I got there around 3:15 and walked around for the life of me I couldn't locate anyone so I got in line around 3:45 pm. Everyone loked the same in their raingear and umbrellas. Lots of people looked like drowned rats because it was a constant drizzle or light rain.

Inside, sat in the balcony stage left and coincidentally was in the middle of the DNC Phil phans, and met unruth and leshphan. I saw a women on the floor about 30 feet from the stage with the Team Phil 00 shirt but other than that, didn't connect up with any zoners except for tapecat and bodenzord as they were setting up their gear. Crowded venue by the time Phil started but not like the Maritime!

First jam sounded a lot like it was a china-cat theme then into Shakedown. I started seeing the dead in 71 and this was my first shakedown ever live! Then an exetended jam and into Loose Lucy. Lots of people were up and dancing with this opener. A break then "Marbles" which is a great Herring song because he can really pick away on this one. Another break then Mason's. During Mason's Phil motions to the guy on the sbd (stage left) to turn up the vocals which they do and it does sound better. The remaining 1st set was typical Phil renditions of these tunes.

Set 2 again was divided into 2 chunks. The first chunk I would characterize overall as mental Phil playing meaning the jams and tunes aren't strong rockers or were played more in a "space" style than "rock" style. The Other 1 was particularly seriously Phill'ed out. Not a long versions but strongly played. Also, on the Fall tour they started adding some synth effects which here appeared in the spacey jams of set 2 part 1. Barraco was very strong tonight esp during set 2 and Warren wasn't as prominent as on other nights. Phil and Rob seemed to be carrying a lot of the tunes. I liked this esp the way Rob switched to the organ sound during cryptical so it merged right into Strawberry Fields. The Space part was just that - nicely spacey with only 2-3 people playing at a time (like some of the 73's Dark Star jams).

Chain > 1000 stars I would characterize as typical renditions. After they stopped at the end of set 2 there wasn't excessive crowd cheering and clapping for an encore - everyone kind of just waited. The encore was standard fare - I was hoping they would do a Lovelight to cap off the night with a strong rocker but it was not to be ...

The computer generated liquid light show on the circular disk was nice I thought.

Also, there was at least one serious Phil bomb in set 2 where you felt the bass and the whole place was resonanting.

There was also one juggler that would go around to different places and juggle about 6 green orbs.

2 people had these whirling gizmos where you type in letters and as you spin it the letters appear in red - so during the various songs they would type in the song name!

To sum up - I think this show will sound better on tape than live because it wasn't a stong rock out show. I look forward to getting Tapecats and Bodenzords seeds of this one.

>>>From my perspective last nights show lacked intensity. While
well played and technically very good something was missing.

That would echo a trend I noticed on the 'Fall' tour just completed...

And someone ele mentioned how loud the bass was, & you couldn't hear the guitars that well.
Sounds just like the Beacon. I have to almost turn the bass off to equal out the sound on the Beacon shows....
What's up with that?

PS: Have fun tonight.

Think of me during Viola > Dark Star......

There is an alter to remember 9-11, those we lost, what we have gained back and what we had forgotten we have. Hope everyone stops by. Todays New York Times is breathtaking, in every sense, may be leaving parts of it there.

Last night. Perfect setlist, as Less Than said, and flawless. Perhaps the best show I have seen, if not, truly up there with the epics, Hartford, Asbury, 12-2-01. 11-30-01. Finally, I see an awesome show out here. By counts, about 2000 eastcoasters here. Without a doubt huge Philzone representation out here. Have seen many of the usual suspects and spent time with many I never expected to meet in a thousand years. Very very cool folk, and those of you that read this, it has been incredible meeting you, especially the LA ex-pats. After almost 2 years, its about time we met, and I will find you tonight. Wore my hat last night, hoping to find you all.

Highpoints last night, the setlists for starters. The lullaby and the jam leading into St. Stephen. All of the jams, not to mention the songs. This show is as good as it gets...but then it is Phil, so that is to be expected.

One honorable mention. Life is beautiful, nature blows your mind, and when the light shines down on Jimmy Herring just as he is smiling that smile, the entire world becomes a better place. His absolute pure joy in those seconds is palpable.

Had many conversations with God last night. Once again, that music served to make life simple. What you need to do, and what you need to throw away becomes apparent and obvious.

To the Humbolters in the lobby at breakfast this morning, god bless you that was your first show. Too bad you couldn't go tonight.

Tom and Aron, more when we get back. Miss you.
K, J and B, tonight. Miss you all.

WOW! Hart and Kreutzmann! For the entire CRSB set? How was that? Must've been a great vibe. Didn't think all would play together so soon (after some of the recent comments that have been made by both Mickey and Phil). What a way to start a new year! Bring on Spring Tour! Seven more at the Beacon, please. Mickey and Billy, you're always welcome too!

Happy New Year. On my way to the airport, with a few minutes that may or may not have coherence attached to them. Yes, the setlists are great, and yes the music was incredible. The Bunny Brigade was unbelievable. I mean, when I realized it was Mickey on the side of the stage I thought I should get my eyes checked.

Unity is Possible. The setlists for Phil and the Bunny tell the story, and it is pretty simple, even for those of us that try to complicate everything in our lives.

Those of you who know how much I care about you, that is not going to change, ...last year was a great great year, and this is going to be better. We know how to do it now.

Yes...Mickey, Billy and Bob were disguised as wizards as a Fantasia themed stage moved about the audience delivering them onto the stage...then BAM the costumes were dropped to revel all three. They played THE ENTIRE CRSB set...both Billy and Mickey played large percussion set-ups to the left of Molo...it all ripped...can't think straight right now..the set after CRSB started at 1:35 or so in the morning...seemed to recall walking out of there sometime around 3:00am...

Happy New Year to all...

Amazing music last night. I wondered if Phil and the boys could touch last years' NYE. They trumped it, I'd say. CRSB was unbelievable. Not Fade>Truckin' was thunderous. Phil dropped three or four bombs at the end of Sugar Mag. and The Wheel was stellar. I wasn't sure how much gas was in the tank for the last set but PLQ with Trucks did not disappoint, Help> Slip>Dark Star was everything you could ever hope for in a perfect world. It was soul caressing. I was so happy when they closed with the Uncle John's Band too. CRSB had waltzed through that tease for a minute or two before going into Sugar Mag. UJB was nothing short of inspiration. And they brought all home with the Franklin's encore. All in all, about 9 hours of music for the night , ending at 3 AM PST. Good thing I was high as a kite! Happy New Year!

Amazing show. Only a phil show, with all his renewed spirit and humanity, could you have such a great vibe. Musically diverse and unexpected.

A word to you nicotine smokers, stay in your smoking section: outside. My asthmatic wife could barely enjoy the show.

And to you twelve step folks: right on. But change the twelve steps to include the final 13th realization/step: the higher power is within. and the corollary: live and let live. Not all drug users are abusers and only a small percentage of users ever end up abusers. And that's ok too. Diabetics, asthmatics or anyone with a chronic illness needs to follow special rules which don't apply to the rest.

This is a time for unity and brotherhood and sisterhood. Love is now more than ever sorely needed to heal all our wounds. Let's follow Phil, Bobby, Mickey and Bill's example and rise above our differences and support each other. Some folks do need abstinence and the support of fellow abstainers. Some will want to explore the inner realms of the psychedelic dimensions. Others just want to have a couple good brews. To those who are simply numbing themselves and drowning their senses, you will need all of us one day to support your recovery so don't lash out with anger at those in a different space.

UNITY IS POSSIBLE.

IN FACT, UNITY IS.

WE ARE ALL ONE ANOTHER IN DISGUISE.

I can't add any better reviews than some of the others before - I especially appreciated Dewit's (I couldn't begin to find such choice words to express how I felt). It's also great to see the consensus so far that all you really knowledgable Phil fans thought the shows were as spectacular as I did - I'm only sorry I couldn't have found the time to track some of you folks down to finally meet you at some point during the run (will definitely make a point to do this for the next Bay Area shows). I'm just blissed out - what else can I say.

Thanks to Phil and the gang for making such great music and to you folks for generously spreading it around. We're so fortunate to have these incredible musicians around to add so much enjoyment (and, dare I say, meaning) to our lives.

Happy New Year to you all - Long Live Phil and his fine Friends!!!

The most epic night of music which surpassed ANY show of the past year. The MX missile did indeed keep me up ALL night, and for whoever wanted the spinners that display text, you can pick em up at the Discovery Store. Unity IS possible and Bali and Jen, it was great seeing one of ya and meeting the other, although brief. We had to go grab our stuff at will call and skirt the line to get on in. Late arrival the 12-30 night caused us to end up standing for a good part of the show, and we needed the full on view. Carol Kane from NJ, if you see this, it was nice meetin ya, simka! HAPPY NEW YEAR to all you zoners and whoever gets the dankseed disc for moi for both nights...wins a special prize!!! Personally, I think NYE should be the next official release...if anyone is listening.

I think Warren was holding off until the lead for the Sugar Mag purposely, so he and Jimmy could give Bob the double whammy.... I though he would get whiplash as he was lookin back and forth repeatedly at that point. MORE BUNNY IN 2002!

i'd like to mention that there was a wordless midnight hour jam on the 30th, heavy foreshadowing. was everyone else as soaked as me on sunday, the whole Phil show was liquid madness, that old n-ring circus was kicking up a funky good time, crowd and band joined in an effortless embrace circa 73, i thought it couldn't be out done, BUT WAIT! the LOVE in that room when CRSB or the Old Other Ones, or whatever, came out on NYE, well maybe i'd died and gone to heaven, but for me that gave me such joy, the rest was all gravy, and boy didn't the great love beast eat our hearts out for a solid 9 hours at the best damn party on the planet, I plan on being back in SF next year, for sure, this town is fucking nuts, just my kind of place

UNITY THROUGH HARMONY OF THE SOUL

Wow, I have to say a little thank you to
EVERYONE
Who attended the festivities last night for
the mindblowing vibes

Well with all the obvious stuff being said we will try to "review" some "moments" according
to what is left of my mind

RatDog is definetly progressing.

There was so much FUSION I could not count the
number of styles during their "set".
feel like a stranger opened wide
then a short Not Fade Away clap jam into Aiko
and a tripp jam out of dear prudence
and I think I heard some string cheesish jamming
in thee some where And I liked how Logic worked
in that scream effect in the end
all in all very good

classic midnite hour
in the jam out of it
there was some good crowd vocals which led into a nicely reworked hard to handle.
over all this "set" was great
but the contrasting viola> steel>viola>Mr. fantasy> viola>charlie left me with some major questions about my place in this large group

CRS was freakin nuts.....
What else can you say besides
Day break on the land

Phil set 2
I like how they "Slipped" in Derek Trucks
noone else mentioned the Other one tease
in the jam befor Dark Star I wish I could have held on to dark star a little longer
But, It was
Terapin Station
that made my existence
worth while
encores rock

Harmonizing is spiritual

One note, from my vantage point, the wizards were Phil, Molo and Weir.

Check out www.setlist.com for some sweet photos of the show ...click on recent setlists, scroll down and look for either the Phil or Ratdog setlists...

I could-a swore it was Bob, Mickey and Bill in the wizards disguise...lots of smoke and dry ice effects didn't help (not to mention my absence from the realm of mental reality...)

I just wanted to say thank you -- thank you to the community that has stayed so strong through all the years. From someone who never had the opportunity to experience an NYE show in the good ole days, thank you for one of the most memorable experiences of my life. What a vibe in Kaiser those two nights -- the energy level had a life of its own. I could not stop hugging, smiling and sharing the vibe with every person within 10 feet of me. I hope everyone appreciates and intends to continue the spirit which Phil has revived. Thank you, Phil not only for two wonderful nights of music and festivity, but for the many hours, days and years of peace of love you have allowed through your music, your philanthropy and your general kindheartedness.

I love you all. See you next year.

P.S. To anyone who received a copy of the Purple Buddha CD, please contact me at "TTBuddhajam@aol.com" -- I'VE GOT PICTURES FOR YOU!!!!

Peace -- Ted

C'mon people wake up - that show was not that epic especially when compared to last year's 3 set performance and NYE buildup. As far as Corndog is concerned, they palyed as nice Stranger but other than that they have the distinct feel of an aging lounge act. Their name should be plastered up on the Holiday Inn airport marquis in some town like Kalamazoo for an extended stay. For PLQ, very solid 1st set from start to finish. The NYE buildup w/the 3 wise men was nice. Crusader Rabbit and the novelty of seeing Billy and Micky on stage having the time of their lives was sweet but wore off rapidly when you really listened to the music. During Playin' Bobby gave the rap sign at leat 3 tines before the boys were willing to end it. Speaking of rap, what the hell was that "are you feelig good say oh yeah" shit - was that DJ illogic or what - very harsh on my mellow. To say that CRSB rose to the level of cheese would be an insult to dairymen and cattle everywhere. The Wheel was weak and Sugar Mags was so uninspired when Warren was off stage that Jimmy was about to fall asleep just going through the motions - it only picked up when Warren returned about 1/2 way through the song. The 2nd full PLQ set was very nice with Jimmy just loving it when Derek was taking lead during some heavy jamming. Very nice interplay between Warren and Jimmy all night. It was clear early on that Warren would set the tome for the whole night. Sorry if the truth hurts but we must really listen with our ears and not so much with our hearts. Peace.

>>>A word to you nicotine smokers, stay in your smoking section: outside. My asthmatic wife could
barely enjoy the show.

Yeah, right.
Don't you know it's a Deadhead's right to do whatever they want at a Dead/Phil show & nobody has a right to 'judge' it no matter who they effect?
Wasn't there somebody talking or screaming "Jerry!" in your ear as well?
Or spilling beer on you?

BTW, How about ONE in depth review of the MUSIC played on NYE?
PLEASE?

i.e.: One verse of Dark Star or 2?
Was Warren out for CRSB the whole time, or did he just come out during Sugar Mag?
How long was Playin' with the space in it?
Was the Wheel like Phil's version or the Dead's?
Did Bob sing every song like on 12-3?

One more ?:

How did they go from Slipknot to Dark Star?

Was it in the middle of Slipknot & just wander out of it?
Was it after the end where they would generally go into Franklin's & instead they start Dark Star?
Some one mentioned an TOO jam, so I figure on the 1st scenario.

2 verses of Dark Star after what seemed to be a short Slipknot - never really heard a hint of the Franklin's and was kind of left wondering about it after they closed the set w/ UJB. And yes, Bobby sang the entire CRSB set - as I recall Warren was out for most of the set - very nice NFA->Truckin. The whole set was about an hour so Playin' wasn't that long and Weir made sure that the boy's wouldn't get too far out into left field - very disappointing if you ask me.

Oh come on, action jackson, the show was totaly epic. Every bit as good, if not better than last year. And that had nothing to do with the bunny set, which was pure nostalgia, but a lot of fun! The whole deal was tremendous!

To answer some questions, both verses of Dark Star were sung. The third set, the PLQ's second, was as good a set as I have seen them play. Huge Help>Slip, with the slipknot melting into a space jam that landed in Dark Star. Terrapin was from "Inspiration" to the end. The No More Do I rocked hard, and UJB was fantastic. The First set featured a scorching Hard To Handle, and the Viola Lee sandwhich was great. Set One was sort of a tribute to everything and everybody. Midnight Hour acknowledged the special day, New Years Eve, Hard To Handle a tribute to PigPen, Tons of Steel a tribute to Brent, Dear Mr Fantasy for Jerry, of course, and Cosmic Charlie a tip of the Hat to us deadheads. The Rabbit set was a tip of the hat to the Grateful Dead, Sugar Magnolia for Bill Graham, Help on the Way to greet the New year, Dark star asks: Shall we go, You and I while we can? Yes, of course, and we will reach Terrapin and listen to Uncle Phil's band. Ending the show with Celebration, which the evening was, and may the 4 winds blow us safely home.

I've seen 10 Grateful Dead NYE's, and most of the post GD NYE's, and this one ranked in my top 3.

Hey little bride - don't get me wrong, if you read the post closely, the PLQ sets were very fine and have no complaints - the CRSB set, sung entirely by Bobby was weak w/the exception of the NFA and Truckin - like I said listen w/your ears and not your heart. Not only was the band uninspired during portions of it, much of the crowd was also. Did you really like DJ illogic? answer honestly. No need to make this personal and you too are entitled to your opinion. Peace and happy new year to you too.

>>>Every bit as good, if not better than
last year.

I thought Last Year sounded very mediocre despite the length.
.Only 2 parts stood out to me: The Midnight Hour & Viola Sandwiches were very good. The Dark Star was the weakest version I ever heard P&F do. Too much 'filler' thrown in that night. And, by the encore, they're running on fumes.

Now, give Action a break. He's entitled to his opinion, good or bad.

I heard alot of varying reports on the 12-3 show.
I'll have to hear it myself (hopefully soon).
One friend who posts here, said it was great, then after listening to it, he said "parts of it are awful". His words, not mine!

Here, on NYE, it was just one of THREE sets, so, the 'Bob effect' on the music was less drastic than a whole show.....

okay..maybe im just grumpy i missed the show, but I have to say I am now and always have been a Phil-o-maniac!!!(of course Jerry is/was the MAN--but c'mon Phil is totally built to last!!)Phil and friends dont need anybody else in their line-up. Phil has chosen to play only for feeling and charity, the other guys only hop on the bandwagon when it seems cool. Bobby is awesome and Ratdog is fine-he gets to be the boss and he likes it. Mickey has bands, Billy has bands, GREAT!!!! NOW LEAVE PHIL ALL TO US!!!! The GRATEFUL DEAD REUNION idea is as dead as JERRY. Nothing will ever be like a grateful dead show. FULL STOP!! so why try to recreate it with old tired songs that jerry long ago perfected for us live and on tour with all the grateful dead members. Phil pulls out the old-school Mason's, Potatoe Caboose, Hard to handle, Unbroken..etc....the other guys dont even think it is worth it to keep that shit alive for us..they just want to be treated like rock-star-gods...and IM NOT BUYIN IN TO IT..Did they wait for PHIL when he was sick?????NO THEY KEPT PLAYING CRAP!!!!---I like this line-up of Phil and Friends..even when the line-up was changing and all the shows werent that great I kept coming back to share space with Phil..the fact that this line-up is the BEST PHIL LINE UP EVER NEXT TO THE DEAD is just icing on the cake. Go home Mickey. Go home Billy. Go back to Ratdog bobby and stay there. Ill still buy ratdog tickets and I will always enjoy all members of the dead any line-up, but damn get off PHILS TIP YOU UNLYAL JOHNNY-COME-LATELY-"reunion" types. If I was at new years I would have looked at that show like my chance to say goodbye to the GRATEFUL DEAD(and gone back to the room to watch the comedy channel hoping Phil spring tour will be phat!!). I look forward to more Phil tours and new bust-outs and just generally anything Phil feels like exposing us to. I really pray he feels we dont need anymore reunion-type shows. Id rather see phil do playin' than bobby anyday. Id rather see phil doin "In your EYES" by peter gabriel than bobby doing "eyes of the world" anyday. WE FINALLY GOT PHIL----LETS NOT GIVE HIM BACK!!!!!

that's all I'm sayin' the middle CRSB set was not that great to be honest. As far as the other two sets went, very tight and no complaints - I guess the BOB factor seemed greater that it was because of the Ratdog set - as far as last year goes, the Midnight Hour and Viola snadwiches were awesome and very hard to top - they without a doubt made the show. Also, with a smaller crowd and the band playing until 3:30 a.m., it had a very intimate feel that will not likely be seen again. PEACE.

Sounds like a good time in the Bay Area for New Year's Eve. The night appears to have made most people in attendance happy.

My biggest hope is that those who whined constantly about Phil not playing with Bob, Bill, and Mickey will now stop it and let these old men get on with their lives in any manner they choose.

i just returned from from the Bay area, and was completely and totally blown away by both nights. I actually enjoyed the music(song selection-wise) better on the 30th (my own opinion and likes of course) but that did not diminish my enjoyment of the 31st in any way. Best new years ever for me, and those who traveled from Atlanta and North Carolina w/ me. AS for 12/31, what more can you say about a 9hr marathon of musical goodness and love. While P & Friends is what I love above all,, it was great to witness such a reunion after all that has gone down this year, and as Phil said, the love in the building was overwhelming. Did anyone else notice that Mickey and Billy were wearing the Phil wristbands???? As a lover of the wristband myself, i thought it was pretty damn cool. I hope everyone had a good a time as myself and the crew i traveled with. Thanks Phil and all the fans who made the holiday so special!
PS. The shakedown opener on the 30th was so appropriate, given the kind of stressful weather and mood we were in being strangers in Oaktown, and I felt a thousand times better as soon as it began, thanks Phil, warren, jimmy, rob and john, you guys are the shit!

This show was wonderful. I was lucky enough to catch some of the NYE shows in the early 80's and these shows have reached mythic proportions in my memory. I have not been to a NYE show since 82-83 (I believe that was the year of the giant mushroom.) The show this year ranked right up there. The only thing missing was Jerry, but I think he was there in spirit.

For me this show had a sense of coming full circle from those early days when I was first getting into the Dead, when I was a skinny teenager on the floor trying to get as close to the stage as I could, to now when I am a little older and heavier and trying to find a good seat upstairs. Still I found myself dancing past 2 am, still I find myself grateful for the experience, still I find myself energized to continue this dance through life. The show on stage was a coming together of the old and the new as well. A celebration of the differences and the similarities. In this palindrome year of 2002, I think it makes a lot of sense to be both looking backwards and forwards.

Thank you all for making this a truly memorable experience.

It was a great NYE party but last years show was way better, IMO.
I was way disapointed to see Susan T. wreck the first couple jams.
She didn't fit in and caused the band to change what they were
doing in a disjointed and abrupt manner. Her phrasing was very
nice but I don't think a female voice fits this very masculine
sounding band.

First Tons of Steel for me, love the way Warren sings it.

It was very exciting to see Bob, Bill, and Mickey on stage with
Phil. However the CR set was a letdown. NFA started things with
much excitement but went quickly down hill after that. For some
reason Warren won't play lead when Bob is on the stage. I have
no idea why. Perhaps Warren doesn't understand Bob's style and
doesn't want to get in his way out of respect. Perhaps Warren
is uncomfortable with the Jerry slot he would otherwise fall into.
I don't know but the lack of a driving lead from Warren caused
the post-NFA (and all other) jams to lack direction and purpose.
Phil was obviously upset when the band headed back into NFA after
the jam. It needed to be directed somewhere else but Warren
refused to take the lead. During the set, Warren was constantly
talking to the soundman, then his guitar tech, changing guitars, etc.
But I really don't believe it was equipment trouble. Warren completely
left the stage a few times. Bob kept looking at Warren trying to
get something going but Warren just refused. Bob started laughing
and said something right in Phil's ear. Phil walked over and talked
to Warren. Jimmy was giving Warren strange looks the whole time.
It was weird. Warrens absence killed the set.

Second Phil set was nice but I would have appreciated a nice ballad
slot for Warren. If "No More Do I" was intended as that, it missed
the mark.

Last years NYE was incredible. Compare setlists or experiences.
This year was fun but it wasn't near the level of last year.

A fun memory I forgot to include. During the CR set Bob kept doing his arm thing indicating time to change. Warren completely ignored him so Bob did his arm thing to the others including Phil. Phil waved off Bob's arm thing, made a triangle with his fingers (meaning goup mind, to me anyways) then musically signaled the band to make the change. It was very cool.

Action Jackson- I am always at the show with my heart not just my ears, it's not just about the "perfect" change to the next song or things like that but the atmosphere the magic the vibe!
To answer your question, do I like DJ Logic honestly, well yes I have seen him before and I have enjoyed booging to DJ Logic, no he wasn't the one who got me off on New Years, but it didn't bother me that he was there!

My point isn't about perfection - it's about quality and musical integrity - Bobby completely shut the band down just when they would start to cook - the comment above about Bob signaling to make a change was actually the signal to rap the tune - that cannot be disputed. Mind you, my post is merely a criticism of the CRSB set and the way Bob is trying to recreate the Dead - it's over for me, Phil and the countless legions of Phil's faithful phans - it's time for Bob to let it go - his days as the front man in the world's greatest rock & roll band are over - put it to rest. Having him sing every song for an hour straight and do his little Bob Wier thing was painful.

ok,Bucky, here goes

.e.: One verse of Dark Star or 2?

complete darkstar, 2 verses

Was Warren out for CRSB the whole time, or did he just come out during Sugar Mag?

Warren played the whole set except when he stepped off during the beginning of sugar mags... only came back onstage when phil, while looking for him off stage, kind of urged him on during the end of the song and for sunshine daydream...

How long was Playin' with the space in it?

as long as it needed to be (dont have the times on the songs yet)

Was the Wheel like Phil's version or the Dead's?

interesting as it was a combination of phils version and bobbys ratdog version, which got them into trouble in the bridge, where phil seemed like he wanted to jam out while bobby was trying to sing... got very messy at the end also as they were meandering into a uncle johns jam, but stayed with the wheel.....

Did Bob sing every song like on 12-3?
nfa - all sang
truckin - thats bobbys song
playin - again bobbys song
wheel - all sang
sugar mag - again bobbys song

How did they go from Slipknot to Dark Star?
Was it in the middle of Slipknot & just wander out of it?
Was it after the end where they would generally go into Franklin's & instead they start Dark Star?

jammed out of slipknot very nicely into darkstar.. did not end the slipknot to go into darkstar like they would do to go into franklins

Some one mentioned an TOO jam, so I figure on the 1st scenario.

cant comment on this as i was out in the hall during most of the slip/darkstar jam. but after listening back, didnt really hear a too jam....

Bucky, bear with me, I have talked to some others and we are sort of on the same page. The shows are now sending people into space, and writing what you heard is very very hard now. Cannot explain. Am sure that TC, Less Than, and a few others including myself will be able to put it into words. The show was not unlike the Fall Run, but there is more "professionalism" in the performances. No question there has been some rehearsal time. Especially for the Bunny numbers.

Oh come on that was epic even though it was a little rough but you have to take in consideration that they all have developed different styles over the years and to play together after so long is a little tough. I hope there is another other one type of show this summer with the exact line up we saw on NYE or maybe no molo just the rythem devils. I bet it would rip. From what I saw they were haveing the time of their lives and thats all that mattered that all should matter to anyone of us especially this year. I'm just happy to be alive. If you want to go see a band that really suck go see the string cheese incident then you'll have something to bitch about

What a New Year. The whole experience blew my mind and scattered the pieces all over. Some of which I am sure are lost for good, whats left are permanently rearranged. Or maybe it's just a trip I had long ago brought back to life. In any event it made me feel and think in the most vivid colors, which is enough in itself. There were parts I absolutely hated such as the old dead songs I've heard a hundred times before, seeing the same people, doing the same thing, and wearing the same clothes. I thought, I've changed and is this a world I still want to be in. On the other hand, there were moments of transcendence and musical beauty that are indescribable, and it was good to see old friends doing well. I guess it is going to take a while longer to sort it all out. Anyway, I still think the Slayer concert at the Warfield a couple of weeks ago kicked Phil's ass

To me, I would have loved to have been there as they played everything I want to hear in 2 shows.
But, that's all 'on paper' (like the Met's new team, let's see how it works out 'in action').

But, in the setlist Dept. it looks to my likings better than last year.
I'm looking forward to hearing these shows.

It's a bit disturbing about the Bob/Warren thing.
I didn't notice any of that in Hartford, but that was 25 minutes & 2 songs.....

crs was not a nostalgia act
the whole set might
not have been as progressive as the nfa>jam>truckin
but
the group mind is/seems
more apperant now than ever
i've never heard a playin' quite like it
and if you think the crowd seeme uninspired
it was because they were too into the music to scream
warren might not have taken the lead much
but he did display some advanced tech
some times he just needs some reasurance
the o1 moment was short
but so intence that it had nowhere to go

I was at Dec 3 Beacon 3rd Row Right in front of Warren It seemed that Warren and Bobby have a long way to go to be on the same page. Warren was missing from the stage during more than one song.I hope that Bobby does not drive Warren from the PLQ but I would like to see more CRS. Bobby does add the Lead singer role well.It would be a pleasure to add the other guys to this line up.But how would it work out is anybodys Guess.

actionjackson sez...
Sorry if the truth hurts but we must really listen with our ears and not so much with our hearts<

Sorry but that isn't how it works...so many years ago friends would tout many different bands to me from Cream to Rush(!) using the same argument..listening to music(esp. the Dead) involves alot of heart as well as ears...If it was only about ears I would have left rock 'n' roll 30 years ago. Great music involves emotional connections with the heart and spirit.
Perhaps that has been lost for many.
I could argue that both Phil and Bob are treading water(Phil doing a southern rock thing and Bob doing a jazz/lounge thing)and in fact both must be listened to with heart more than anything.

Okay, okay. Warren was very sick on Dec. 3, and this was widely publicized and left the stage repeatedly to puke...somehow think he is more professional than to throw a few hissys and leave the stage when it suited him...come on people. As for the 2 minutes during Sugar Mag on NYE, I am pretty sure we saw him with Farmer checking out his guitar. Lets spread happy rumours here, like 2 weeks of Phil shows in St. John in March...or better yet, lets wax poetic on the Hard to Handle.

Hey Zimi - with all due respect, just because the Dead would play it didn't mean it was always good - that's by their own admission - I once saw a Weir interview where he said it was up to the phans to be critical so as to maintain the musical integrity - you have to admit that when the Dead were off, no matter how much your heart might have been into what they were doing, the music just didn't come together. As far as comments like the "crowd was too inspired to scream", that doesn't fly in my book - it's all about the music and Jimmy looked bored out of his mind with the lack of intensity in the whole Weir thing.

This show was great ... Derek Trucks, never heard them before, pretty cool especially the spacy thing they opened with and came back to a couple of times ... Ratdog, better than I expected, Scarlet Begonias especially ... Set One, Amazing ... Mr. Fantasy was the best I've heard, but I haven't heard many and Viola of course was great ... interesting to see a segue from Tons of steel since it generally doesn't change from song to song ... CRSB was cool, Bob was way too loud IMO, but they still reached some great peaks ... during the Sugar Mags jam, Bob looked back and forth at Jimmy and Warren with a dazed, awed expression ... The Wheel was very disorganized, but the difference between Bob's Wheel and Phil's Wheel led to a different jam than usual ... Set Three was amazing ... Help>Slipknot was as it always is: great. The Dark Star was the most complete feeling version I've heard from Phil ... instead of jamming into the first verse as most of the Phil versions I've heard, they slowed down Slipknot and did the opening riff and and Dark Star Jam and then a spacy jam after verse two ... Terrapin Station was good and unexpected with the usual "Arabian" jam leading into it (just "Inspiration" onwards) and Uncle John's Band was very good ... very short though, since they didn't jam out of it ... I was sure they'd go back into slipknot after UJB since UJB ends in the same key as slipknot, but they didn't ... knew Franklin's was coming and the Celebration was the best I've heard, didn't seem as LONG as it usually does ... a GREAT night

>>>the Celebration was the best I've
heard, didn't seem as LONG as it usually does .

That's because they've rearranged it.
The vast majority of the lyrics are sung before the one instrumental now, where before, it was like 3 instrumentals.

it is truly hard to know where to start with this incredible show. and let it be said that the 30th was an experience in itself. i have read alot of these posts and there are alot of opinions. here's mine: as far as bob and the other boys are concerned i personally thought the set was fantastic. bob was alot more restained thatn i would have expected and that was a nice surprise. the drummers were solid too. but let's call it what it was. a healing. for them and us. it's phil's way of saying were all okay. the playing itself i thught was superb. bob did try and take charge of the wheel at the end...couldn't help himself i guess. otherwise the entire show was truly trancendental. easily the best i've seen in a decade from any band. and that includes many, many dead shows. and as far as comparing this to the dead, or criticising the rabbit shit to death- why bother. this is entirly new and different. a new ball of wax. and thank god. i am a critical head to a fault. but i can find no fault with this band. i haven't been this excited about anything in a long time.i never thougt i'd feel this way again. i would have been the last person to ever say that a former dead member could breathe new life into thes songs. in fact i saw phil prior tot his lineup and while it was awesome to be in phil's presence again the music was not there. until now. this band is hands down the best shit going. phil has re-tapped into the cosmic flow. On the backs of 2 Southerners he has transcended to the next level. if any self respecting head can walk away from the NYE show and not be anything other than melted then he has never been to IT. i have had many profound psychedelic experiences in my lifetime and this is in the very elite few that have dramatically changed my life. who thought it could be thiss good? how could it happen? all's i goota say is :Come in Weirdness, I accept you! I haven't really talked about the music per se: let it suffice to say that the level of musicianship on the stage with phil's band is truly awesome and totally inspiring. And yes, there was most definitely a Spanish Jam during th dark star. When the going get's tough, the weird turn pro. See ya on tour! hahahahahhahahahahhahahahhahahahah.

IMO, both nights were quite rocking, and the crowd was electric, much more so than last year. In fact, walking in a few songs into Ratdog's set on the 30th was pleasantly surprising in that the place was already packed. After relegating ourselves to the floor behind a huge coat pile, we settled in for some serious Phil jamming. The first set was particularly sweet, our first Loose Lucy and the marbles>stronger than dirt was capital cool. Other 1>Eleven and Scarlet also get a big hell yeah.

NYE, Gina and I decided we were definitely getting seats and showed up before the doors opened, lining up in a huge line full of freaks. What fun, anticipating another packed house and a lots o' great music. We situated ourselves in the left center balcony, met some really cool folks from Heavenly and settled in for the Trucks Band. This reminded me of Herbie Mann for some reason, sans flute and hairy back of course. It was much jazzier than I had imagined. After Trucks, Ratdog came out. I was really impressed, thought Bobby rocked, enjoyed the hell out of his scarlet rendition, stranger is always cool, and thought 2djinn was great. Think and say what you want about bobby, but this guy has some great songs in him and I Ratdog had some great moments. A couple huge bobby fans behind us made it even funner. Personally, I'd rather just go with the flow than overanalyze every move and motion of the bands. Fact o' the matter: On NYE, RD put on a great show.

Phil, of course, was rocking again. Set 1 ender Cosmic Charlie was funfunfun. Crusader Rabbit was a super treat, and for those of you bitching about it, get real! Phil's band with Bobby, Mickey, and Billy? That's hot, man! If you want to bitch about something, bitch about the $8 beers and the $6 dixie cups of champagne, not a rocking set of music by the surviving members of the Grateful Dead Plus! Hell, that was some fun stuff, regardless of who was ignoring hand signals or making faces or whatever silly stuff people are posting. NFA>Truckin'...holy smokes.

The second Phil set was very jammy again, dark star and then some terrapin inspiration....but I gotta say the "celebration" encore wasn't something I was hoping for. sure, franklins was nice, always fun, but there are so many other songs out there that don't seem to be getting so much love these days: crazy fingers, morning dew, box of rain, ship of fools, comes a time, foolish heart, blahblahblah...so there's my bitch (and those $8 red hooks were killin' me!)

Anyway, long and windy post here. Too much time on my hands today. Yo, Dewit, GinaRider says "HI!" It was great meeting ya, hopefully we'll see ya again soon. Also, shout outs to Rich Dave, Brian from the Holiday inn line, our bobby fan friends, the heavenly folks, and the squeaky LA twins!

Oh my god.

The old men continue to surprise and deliver the goods. 7 hours of music! The wizards! Their entrance on their magical chariot. The frenetic instrumental music (from "Fantasia" or just the Crusader Rabbit theme-song?) that ushered in their arrival...

Having wizards come through the crowd was cool enough in and of itself, because, ya know, one expects these sorts of spectacles. Of course, I knew that Bobby would be joining the PLQ, but when the wizards revealed themselves to be THE BOYS, well, my mind was wonderfully blown.

Many things have to combine just right. Your mind-set and openness to it all. The music, vibe, surroundings, circumstances and setting. The friends you are with, the new ones you just made (Ted from Denver, a.k.a. the purple buddha, you were great, man) and let's not forget the essential "travel-vouchers"....

For this happy deadhead, all the magic worked on this night to make the wizard moment (and entire evening) one of the most memorable, joyous and blissful of my life.

The love and good feelings that abounded in that place where as deep, powerful and mystical as ever existed in any church. The Kaiser was truly holy land (not to mention damn fun!).

This show was legendary for me and I want to thank all of you who were a part of making this gift possible. I am still reveling.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that they were wizards????

I was at NYE and I think Phil played much better 12/30 (Baracco was on fire the whole show!!). I am a large Ratdog fan and thought Ratdog played really well on NYE. Phil's set was nothing special NYE. CR was amazing and loved the Sugar Mags. Many of your underrate Bob Weir, he is really a good guitar player. Best Phil Show 7/14/01 Alpine...Cumberland blues was crazy!

One guy's point of view from the seats above.

I would like to say thank you to all involved in making this a huge New Years Eve for me... I'd like to thank the academy, my producers, the director, and phil, but mostly i would like to thank all the dnc'ers who I met on the 30th and waited in line with on the 31st. Gwen, Rose, Jules, Mike, Onion, Cinnamon, who else? Who would've thunk it that on the 30th, my friends not showing up would bring me some new friends? Section 421 will never be the same. I hope to meet up with all of you again. SOON!

December 30th was unbelievable one of the best PLQ shows I have ever attended. It was up there with Hartford from this summer and easily was as good as or better than any of the greek shows.

The first set coulda been a second set for all I care. But It was one long jam.

If the 30th was one of my best attended then December 31st was truly EPIC! And I only say that about the best powder days and my favorite shows. First, thanks Mike for pointing Eric and Karen towards my seats. Eric was the 6' 7" guy with a broken arm. Karen, his girlfriend. The paper crane alter was excellent. My students made fifty cranes for it before the school year ended. The Walls were sweating the entire time and the floor was a skating rink. Albeit one made of sweat not ice.

Ratdog's set was well played. Not as good as the night before. Mark Karan was holding back a bit. I do like his guitar playing. Yes, I especially liked the heartfelt touch of grey to close the set. It was nice to see so many older deadheads at these shows. Even I, at 35 am beginning to show some grey.

First set Phil was unf-ckin' believable. It might as well have been a second set. Susan Tedeschi was great. Think Donna Jean with a better voice. The Hard To Handle was amazing and the Viola sandwich as good as or better than Portland 2/12/01.

NEW YEARS

I would like to preface this with an, "I knew already." But it didn't dampen the joy I felt as Billy, Mickey, and Bobby took the stage at midnight. There may be a lot of criticism of this set but there is an overarching theme here.

Picture this, Phil wearing a PDNY uniform. 9-11 in our recent past. George Harrison dying, leaving no chance for any Beatles reunion. Our world being more tenuous then ever. I bet all these things brought about our momentous occasion. This was about FAMILY. This was about realizing that there is only a "short time to be there." With that in mind we were blessed with this reunion of sorts. Who cares if the music didn't reach the caliber we are so used to and lucky to have now with PLQ! While the set was rusty, there were moments of "Blinding Brilliance." (Remember there were 8 musicians on stage! It is hard to keep the sound clean and not walk on each other.) I especially loved the not fade>truckin'. The playing jam was nice once they smoothed out the players in the 10 beat rhythm. Oh yea, and The constant Phil bombing runs throughout Sugar Mags. It was one of the best Sugar Mags I have ever heard. (150 Dead shows, not a ton, but not a newbie.)

After about an hour and ten minutes or so Cwusadah Wabbit left the stage to thunderous applause.

After a short set break to reconfigure the stage PLQ played an hour and a half late night barn burner. I won't comment critically on the set. It's really not my place. But did we get down and boogie some more.

When it was all said and done. PLQ clocked out at approximately 3 am. Not much more can be said. The Kaiser was where I learned what it means to be a deadhead. (80's) It was nice to go back to the old school.

Give a shout out my way if we ran into each other at the show. I was the short guy with the Alta baseball cap and Hawaiian shirt. (outta 8500 people lol)

I know what I am saving my hard earned nickles, dimes and quarters for this year!

David

A couple of responses, and things to add, before the memory fades completely:

*the fellow doing the "let me hear you say yeah" rap during the Ratdog drums was not DJ Logic; DJ Logic was the guy doing the album scratching (or whatever these young hip-hop kids call that) at the back right-hand side of the stage. And I thought he was a good addition to Ratdog's sound.

*I agree that the CR set wasn't great musically, but I did think the feeling on stage and in the crowd was wonderful. The drumming was especially muddled, given that there were three drummers -- too bad Molo couldn't have stepped aside for at least one tune to let Billy play the main set of traps. I also agree with whoever noted that Warren didn't seem to get in the groove of that set, which was an even bigger problem than the drumming. All minor gripes though, compared to the thrill of seeing the boys together again.

*Warren's midnight countdown, which began with 7, was less than inspired-sounding, and barely got the crowd's attention. He sounded uncomfortable, like a kid forced to read out loud to his class, a mood that continued throughout the CR set.

*Both P&F sets were stellar. Better than anything they did at the Greek last summer, though not up to the standard of the best Maritime shows last February.

*I'm probably risking the wrath of the deadicated phil-zoners here, but I do sort of miss the frequent changes of line-up in the early days of P&F. There was a greater sense of risk and adventure, with band members that had not played the same songs together so many times (current lineup seems to have slowed the addition of new tunes to a trickle), and it was interesting to see where new players would take the old songs. Still, if NYE is any indication of future quality, I'll keep seeing this configuration as many times as I can, as long as it lasts. Peace.

>>>>How about the East Coast getting a 3 set show?

wait a minute. you east coasters get two long runs in Boston and NYC and now you want to
take NYE from us poor, no fall tour west coasters? back off man.

Yeah, I even thought of that in a private e-mail last week to Pukewedan....

But, you get EVERYTHING in 2 shows, while we had to wait 2 weeks for ONE Dark Star & ONE Help > Slip > Franklin's this summer.

You go to NYE, you know you're getting Dark Star.
And Viola.
And The Eleven.
And....

I had to wait 16 shows to see Viola, while every show I went to this year, I bet Phil was writing out the setlist to include St Stephen as he was putting my tickets in the envelope.

We also haven't seen a show the length of 2-18-01 out this way, let alone 3 sets.

As one who can only go to a few shows, I prefer the West to East.

So, I suggest we start a letter writing campaign to GDTS.
Or, maybe we can bring signs to the show saying 'THREE SET SHOW FOR THE EAST COAST ANNOUNCED IN ADVANCE'.

Hey, if people will hang up 'MAKE JIMMY SING' signs, why not?

N.Y.E. & Phil;

From my experience with N.Y.E. & anything to do with the Dead, it should remain in the Bay Area permanently. It not so much an asthetic consideration, as it is Home. Everyone wants to be Home for the Holidays.....

I should also note that it's always been the Bands way of saying "thanks" to the original cast of Bay Area characters. Long before it was Dawk Staw Jewwy in Lonk Island, we were there.

So if my vote counts, long live P&F's & the Bay Area anything else would be second rate....

3 sets equal NYE or Springfield Creamery/Veneta period.

and don't u think waiting for the Dark Star makes it that special?

Prediction: Phil/Mule tour this Summer-hard to beat last summer tour but mark my words: the good times have only begun to roll.

When did I ever say that?

I know that's the impression for years with the Dead....

Let's see, what shows are most commonly mentioned as the best P&F shows?

5-27-00, West Coast
2-18-01, West Coast
4-20-01, Gooberville

Just in terms of shear numvbers, the vast majority should be in the North East....

PS: I'm coming to NYE next year.

Oh joy the old east/coast west coast arguement isnt that what got tu-pac shot? Th0 i digress....

As someone who was one of the origonal Georgians who made the trip(s) out west I would say that by far the west coast tours have been much more fulfilling then east coast shows. I find the venues that Phil Lesh and Friends played are more historic and quant. I for one would definately pick going to Greek,Cuthbert and Snowqualmie as opposed to going to Deer Creek or even lakewood here in Atlanta. I have noticed that in the west people are more happy to be at the shows then back east where people are more interested in drinking and hanging out in the lobby instead of melting to the music.I saw quite a few P & F shows this year and since everyone is listing the shows they attended I will do the same.

2/16/01 Maritime Hall
2/17/01 Maritime Hall
2/18/01 Maritime Hall

4/13/01 Sunrise

4/14/01 Sunrise

4/15/01 Hard Rock (easily the coolest east coast venue that I went to and perhaps the best show.

4/17/01 Atlanta Civic Center-Home show was good and the Braves played a day game at home so we were loving the DH.

4/18/01 Asheville

4/20/01 Charlotte

6/29/01 Greek (finally got to go to the place where some of my best tapes came from)

6/30/01 Greek

7/1/01 Greek (phil day !!)

7/3/01 Eugene (I loved that venue)

7/4/01 Snowqualmie (awesome venue,I have a shot of the stage at 2 pm as my screen saver. It was the farthest out I went for any show ever. I didnt even mind the 2 hr wait to get out of there after the show.

8/3/01 Atlanta-Did not attend took 90 year old grandmother to see Braves/Brewers in Milwaukee. (I know headlight how could I miss atl?)

11/9/01 St Louis The Fox- makes the fox in atlanta look like a dump. 90 year old ushers who had no clue where all the smoke was coming from.

11/10/01-State Palace Theatre in Louisville,we had to use old passes to sneak in because we didnt have tickets and it sold out. We had to wait in the bathroom until the doors opened then we made our way to the last row in the top. Great show probably better then the night before.

12/21/01 Asheville:Killer Warren Haynes jam and for the first time ever Driving and crying didnt suck. I guess 4 songs can make anyone look good.....Phil rocked but mule rocked harder....

12/30/01-Kaisar -It seems like I was counting the days for this show since jan 2 2001 and I wasnt dissapointed.

12/31/01=Kaisar- Grateful dead reunion for one night only. More intense then the fireworks of last year eventhough my favorite part was the 3 part viola.

19 shows this year is pretty good that is half as many times as the year I saw the dead most but I am old now so it should mean something :).

Outlook for 2002 hopefully more Phil and Friends shows then in 2001.....Or at least I can hope....

But, now Mrs B wants to go to some nice, warm place....

I am a freak I have been considering booking the hojo for next 12/30-12/31 .Hopefully next time they give wakeup calls so we are not wakingup at 3 pm like last year.

Key Question #1

Does orlando Hard Rock have beer ?

Key Question # 2

Do they sell for less than $5 ?

I've had tons of fun in O-town over the years, but I'm kinda scared of hard rock cafe'. The place just sounds toooo...

...I don't know, like Starbucks and Perrier type joint ?

I know that the
hard rock
has beer because
it was spilled all over me
by some guy
trying to get like 8 beers to the front
through an overpacked crowd
it was real funny

It is a commercial franchise
so they only pay
like two of the kids
enough to care about their jobs
the rest are too busy getting high

thats the reason we had so much fun ,using the lip of the stage to pass the bowl.

As for beer that is a non issue because the most I will drink anyhow is like 1 or 2 so my vote is hard rock live. The only thing Hard Rock about that place is the name inside its like seeing the band at a bar you can smoke down in.

Reposted:

This is a review of the NYE festivities I wrote for my friends and
family ~ thought you guys might enjoy it. My kids are Travis(14) and
Katy (10) ~ Travis being the guitar player in the family was really
looking forward to seeing Jimmy and Warren.

Travis and Katy had a great time at the 30th show and I'm really glad
they got the chance to catch this lineup. We were right up front (of
course) and Travis got to watch Jimmy Herring's fingers all night
long and I got to watch Jimmy Herring all night long. The show was a
full 6 hours and so was a bit much for Katy and she fell asleep during
Unbroken Chain. Highlights for me with Ratdog were hearing a Pink
Floyd tune I had never seen done called Mathilda Mother, it was nice
to see a new tune from Bobby and made me realize that he needs to
write some new stuff! Mississippi Half step, Blackbird and El Paso
were also really nice. Mark Karan has got some great feeling
coming out of that guitar of his! Phil highlights were pretty much
the whole second set and seeing Jimmy Herring's fingers fly on King
Solomon's Marbles (oh hell, just watching Jimmy Herring was a f*cking
thrill)! The Unbroken Chain was by far the best I've seen this year,
didn't think it could get better than the 11/17/01 Lehigh show ~ but
they managed it! It was a really good show but the best was still yet
to come....

New Year's Eve was the only sunny day we had the entire time we were
in San Francisco. David, Julie, Jesse (my cousin), Lisa (her roommate)
and assorted other people left for the show at about 3:00. With the
doors not set to open until 4:30 and Jess living 10 minutes from the
Kaiser Auditorium we thought we'd have plenty of time ~ wrong! The
line to get in the door was all the way around the building by the
time we got there at 3:10! We had a great time in line, met some
wonderful people both locals and people who had traveled for the show.
The furthest distance traveled we figured was a couple from Florida ~
that's quite a truck!

We snagged some seats on the Jimmy side of the venue, up in the
bleachers. The venue only held about 7,000 people so we could still
see the stage well and the sound was very good. The music began
promptly at 6:00 with the Derek Trucks band ~ my god, that boy is
just 21 years old but can make his guitar bleed! He is awesome and if
he doesn't burn out will be a true power house for the rest of his
career! We sat in our seats during his set knowing that we needed to
conserve our energy for the night. Next up was Ratdog, great show,
but I'd have to say again that Bobby needs to write some new stuff I'm
pretty tired of Odessa (can't believe I said that) and Easy Answers
(can believe I said that!). Highlights: Bury Me Standing* > Scarlet
Begonias* > Aiko Aiko*, Dear Prudence > Bass/Drums+ > Jam+ > Two
Djinn > Touch of Grey ~ Touch of Grey was fantastic and truly set the
stage for the rest of the evening!!!!

Next up, Phil and Friends. This was a Warren evening and it was low
down and awesome with this setlist: Midnight Hour (2nd set of verses
w/Susan Tedeschi-Trucks) >Hard To Handle (w/ Susan Tedeschi-Trucks) >
Viola Lee Blues (v1) >Tons of Steel >Viola Lee Blues (v2) > Dear Mr.
Fantasy > Viola Lee Blues and Cosmic Charlie ~ all sung by Warren ~
Nice to see Warren really rock the joint. We were rocking ~ the
balcony was bouncing and the sexual tension in the room was at an all
time high (no, I wasn't up front!).

cont...

...cont

When the band left the stage you could feel the excitement running
rampant in the room, it was a visible cloak that held everyone
together with smiles and laughter. We were sitting on the side of the
arena and so had the perfect view of the crew setting up the float to
meander through the crowd. We were able to see 3 "wizards" standing
on the platform. One dressed in white with golden stars and moons on
the robes, another dressed in black with white stars and moons and the
last dressed in blue ~ all with those great wizard hats pointing
skyward. Then the lights went down and the band started playing the
Sorcerer's Apprentice (we were all laughing and wondering where
Mickey was ~lol)...a whole crew of people were behind the float
pushing it through the crowd. It followed a path from the left side of
the venue, over to the right of the sound board and straight up the
center ~ it was amazing that there was enough room for all the people
on the floor to move out of the way!! We didn't have a clue who the
people on the float were, we were thinking Wavy Gravy and Friends but
we were watching the people on the floor freak out as the float went
by so we figured we were in for a treat! We just didn't know how good
it was gonna be. The float went right up to the center of the stage,
the wizards disembarked on the stage and proceeded to disrobe ~ the
place went bezerk!! Could it get any better than having Phil, Bobby,
Mickey and Billy all on stage together!! The mood in the room was
ecstatic!! We were flying high and happiness was shooting around the
room in smiles, hugs and energy! Highlights of the Crusader Rabbit set
~ everything!! Watching Mickey and Phil play at each other, seeing
Bobby run to the front of the stage and stab his guitar at the crowd,
the overwhelming applause and the setlist: Not Fade Away >Truckin' >
Playin' in the Band > Space > Playin' (reprise) > The Wheel > Uncle
Johns tease > Sugar Magnolia. The only drawback is that they could
have played all night instead of 5 songs ~ but that would be greedy
of me so I'll be completely content with what I heard ~ hehe.
Somewhere in all of this madness we did the countdown and saw
thousands of balloons fall from the ceiling. It was all pretty amazing
and my mind was completely saturated with colors and chocolate type
things.

Next up was a seat ~ all we did during the 3rd half time was relax.
At this point it was 1:00 in the a.m. and we had been at this since
3:00 and we were all just a tad bit tired. One of the things that I
really like about Phil and Friends is that they walk out on stage and
begin playing before the lights go down. It's unpretentious and was a
great way to begin the 2nd Phil and Friends set of the night. This
whole night had been like one of the finest multi course meals I had
ever eaten ~ this set was the lightest, most filling
chocolate/raspberry cake dessert I have ever had! Derek Trucks sat in
for most of the set. Once again, I have to say he is the most amazing
guitarist ~ one of his guitar parts during Dark Star was so
overwhelming I found myself in tears, I wasn't the only one! It was
all very beautifully played with feeling, depth and joy, the only
drawback being that the Terrapin started a little slow ~ not much of a
complaint huh. At this point the music was all there was ~ you know
what I mean? By the time we got to the Franklin's Tower I had
completely forgotten that the set had begun with Help/Slipknot.

The whole night was magical and I was left completely drained and
totally filled. Wish you all could have been there!

Smiles,
Vieve

some different perspectives on this subject

extended jams in the beginning middle and end of not fade away.....

It was like 30 or 35 min. into the CRSB set
when Playin' started
but just looking at the set list you might not realize that this "set" was almost half way over with....In terms of "time" that is.

I am just trying to figure one thing out here? Why do people that bash Bob Weir keep going to see him when he plays with Phil? I read bad reviews on DEC. 3, 2001 and here 12/31/01 too. Why do you go? Stay home if you don't like it!! I do like them together!!!!! All the Bitchin' I hear about than why is that I see soooooo many fingers up in the air trying to get in?????? Why do they sell out when they play together if its sooo bad? BOBBY HATERS STAY HOME WHILE I GO SE HIM AND PHIL JAM TOGETHER AND HAVE A KICK ASS TIME :) Please e-mail me if you can say anything worth while and that makes sense of this Bobby bashing. I am confused I go there see all these people inside dancing there asses off then they come in here and BITCH BITCH BICTH. Man Jerry is probably looking down on all this and shaking his head. Shame on YOU!!!!!!
My 2 cents.........Tim :)

The thing w/ Bobby is tht he just doesn't push the envelope like our man Phil. I thought the 12.3 show was fun, but not even close to bringing me anywhere like a PLQ show. I love that all of the rumoured in-fighting and what-not seems to be over. I loved seeing the drummers back on stage together, but that set was just fun..NOT a killer jam set, IMHO. Like I said to a bunch of folks here and elsewhere, Ratsuck had a sax & trumpet player on stage...but didn't play WRS either nite? Meanwhile, PLQ is jammin the oldies but goodies...Masons...Viola...Crytpical...Golden Road...etc.
PLUS, when Bobby's up there we always seem to get less Warren...and that's a bad bad thing.

Some people go to Phil Lesh shows to hear some really great music, not to hang out with people with dreadlocks or buy drugs or eat veggie burritos or claim 'I was there'. So these people are focused on the quality of the music. The set with Bob lacked quality. That's why these people are complaining. I understand that the quality of that set didn't affect the price of mushroom chocolates or veggie burritos or talking to your old bro 'Rain' during most of the set; therefore, you enjoyed the set. I bet you also think SCI 'kicks ass'.

Some people go to Phil Lesh shows to enjoy themselves and do so regardless of how critical the guy next to them is of the music. Hmmm 'magine that.

Amen, LessThan..

You fucking anal retentive tools.

I read one more 80+ War and Peace sized review that analyzes the show down to when Phil cuts a fart during The 11 I am gonna vomit.

Wow....my first time ever on this site. Had no clue of the divisive nature of dead-heads. I am 27 and didn't "get it" until I was 19. Saw the Dead only once (tampa '95). Ever since that show, I have been obsessed with collecting all the live Dead material I could (commercial or traded)and seeing as much of the former members perform with their bands as my schedule would allow. I have seen The Other One's 5 times....Ratdog 10 times....and caught my first glimpse of Phil and Friends in Oakland on new year's. To me, there is nothing like seeing the boys perform.....no matter what the setting or line-up. As I watch Bobby on stage with Ratdog, I can't help but stare in awe....this man has been on tour for over 35 years and still performs with passion and ability....his old songs and his new. Same goes for Phil. They do their own thing as they please....and it never fails to please me. Soon this will all be over and we wont have any more reviews to submit. Go out and listen as often as you can, because we will all wish we had a crappy Ratdog or Phil set to bitch about a few years from now when it is gone. God bless you all and I hope to see you at the next show....wherever it may be and whoever may be performing. We all miss Jerry....but nothin's gonna bring him back. Enjoy what we have before it's too damn late.
