i'll be there, can't wait to see phil again, last time was 6/30/06 & 7/1/06
they were fun shows, esp like the 6/30 show, anybody think they'll bust out a terrapin this tour?, maybe philly, NYC?
anyway, that is cool that donna may show up, guests always make for a fun show, maybe another acoustic set?
we'll see, im pumped for this show, taking the day off work to have all day to prepare for the fun that night
I'll be there, can't wait. Camden always seems to bring out some off the hook shows. I like the acoustics better with the lawn open but oh well who would of known that the weather would be this nice.
Never seen a show there with the back closed, should be interesting. On the other hand I'm so close I doubt I'll notice.

I am psyched. Was at the three Chicago shows, and they were great. Wish I could see them all.
Camden/Philly always brings out the best in Phil as it did in the Grateful Dead.
Bringing my boys to this show, 9 and 12 years old. They love Phil!
Hard to believe that Phil (Camden), Blues Traveler(Trenton) and Yonder Mountain (Phila.) are all "in town" on the same night. Let music fill the air!
How about a good 'ol fashioned Dancin in the Streets for the Philadelphia, PA crowd!
Bring On The Tom Thumb Blues Baby !!
Gotta Get Cryptical
I have two extra seats at cost in section 102 middle of row Y. Email me soon if you want em.
I also have FOUR extras in section 202, about row E. These are just behind the floor break by the soundboard. Should be great view and sound. We'll be at the lots pre-show, so we could hook up there.
E-mail me at sunra@comcast.net if you are interested. Looking for our cost. These are real tix from Phl Lesh online ticketing, NOT print at home.
I have one extra ticket Sec 204 Row C Seat 22. I'll take cost or below for the ticket - I managed to score a 5th row ticket today so I won't need this ticket. I'd like to get some cash for it but I just don't want it to go to waste. I should be at the venue by 6pm or so - if you are interested email me at:
neil@standbythedoor.com
I know this is a show review board and all but its the best place to find someone who could use the ticket. Thanks

That's a lot of music.
accoding to my souces, it was inspiration, only the second part of Terrapin that was played. Also, a good time was had by all. Nothing but praise fo the show, especially the third set.
Just got home.
Still can't speak.
See this band.
What they lack in sophistication they make up in spirit. This is the real deal.
My head is still buzzin' from such a special night at the Tweeter! All I can say is WOW. Phil pulled out all the stops for PHILly tonight! Everyone I was with and everyone I saw, including Phil and the band had such a grate time:-)
THANK YOU PHIL!
Yeah. This show really hit the spot for me. Just got home. The acoustic set was really nice. The sound was great in the room, BTW. Kudos to Cotter Michaels who was at the soundboard. The third set was terrific. Playin>Cumberland rocked. Some of III was really beautiful and the energy was really nice in the room. MOTM was georgeous. Then terrapin inspiration exploded out of the jam. Really great stuff. A great Helf>Slip>Franklin's encore. Can't wait to listen to the recording.
The show was very good...but what the fuck on CUMBERLAND?!?!?! Trainwreck....chernobyl. Scarlet, Terapin, Ryder and encore were all highlights.
I thought coming in during the Long Jam->Scarlet was weak, everything picked up very nicely whence the Tim Leary & show kicked inn. Very mindblowing shit thereforth....
My time at the moment is limited (it's 7:25AM I just got 4 hours sleep and I have to be at work in 45 minutes to narrate bus-top tours here in Philly) so I'll start with the part of the show that hit me the hardest (2nd electric set) and write about the rest of the show when time permits.
I'd seen both nights in Chicago on this tour and afterward commented to my friends that there was absolutely no space/spacey jam during those sets. I really enjoyed those shows and there was plenty of raw rock. I wrote off the lack of mind-melt ">"s to Jackie's Greene-horn status (pun certainly intended!)
Well 2nd electric set in Philly we got the space in spades! The whole think had the vibe and songs (w/ the exception of Terrapin) of a GD 72-74 2nd set jam. Playin' came out of the gates wailing. It didn't get too far into space before the jam seemed to tease Cosmic Charlie--- they'd done it in Boston but I knew after the 1st set that repeats that it was possible, but then the jam veered into Cumberland. It was a ragged but right version that had some intense climactic jams that had the whole crowd cheering and whooping it up in unison in that what that gives me chills and makes me feel part of something BIG. A previous poster here called Cumberland "a train wreck" but I disagree. There was one or two vocal miscues but the energy never let up. I liked the vibe of this show. When there was a mistake Phil just grin and made the motions to say "just keep going and see wher this takes us." The Uncle John's that followed was great. Larry's mandolin siounded great and Molo attacked the rhythm playfully making a tune sound novel that's been played a thousand times by a hundred incarnations. The vocal harmomies were rough. My friend next to me smiled and winced, but I turned to him and said "well this ain't fuckin Crosby Stills and Nash!" I really enjoyed the "ragged but right" feel of the show. The vocals made me think warmly of the mid-80s GD UJBs that had awful vocals but wonderful jams.
Jackie and Larry both switched from their acoustic axes to electric axes and I knew the jam was gonna go SOMEWHERE!
During he set I danced really hard. I'm clean and sober by choice but I felt really high, on the edge of seeing colors, floating above the ground. (I was the long-hair in the pit spazzing out on Jackie's side wearing the Slayer t-shirt) As UJB melted into the jam I thought to myself "I dunno where this is going but where ever it goes I know it's gonna be good." I love that feeling at jam shows and I had it continually during this set.
They brought it back to the UJB reprise and then it slipped into an epic spacey jam. It seemed Phil held backon his monitor-mike directions for rhythm and key-changes. As a result the jams in the 2nd electric had a more organic feel than I'm used to with Phil. They didn't suffer from the awkward and abrupt jam transitions that sometimes kill the buzz during the ">" Well Larry busted out the cittern and I figured we'd probably get Mountains (or perhaps Rosemary) Well we did get Mountains but Larry jammed on the cittern forn a while before the song coalesced. The jam reminded me in a way of the jam from Mountains>Dark Star that the Dead would do in the spring of '69. Eventually the jam made it to Mountains and it was a great version. Phil's vocals were strong. Also the first backdrop visuals came out (I miss those) in the form of some circular patterns. Mountains then went into an unexpected but totally great Terrapin (the "Inspiration" part) The jam into Terrapin was totally smooth and amazing. I was pogoing at this point I was so excited. And the driving rock continued with a great set-ended Rider.
I called the long H>S>F encore and it was great with a ragged but right Slipknot.
I'll write more but I gotta go to work.
Monumental! From start to finish. I went in with high expectations, and I was blown away.
Good-Morning Little Schoolgirl: Adequate opener. Strong vocals for Jackie; Larry is already warmed up.
Deal: Extended jam outro feels second-setish. A hint of things to come.
Mexican Girl: A pop-py interlude, back to reality for a few minutes, followed by another huge jam which becomes
Scarlet Begonias: From pop to snap-crackle-pop! A rousing Scarlet feels like a second set opener. We listened in disbelief to a Scarlet>something jam which seemed ready to give way to a first set Fire, but eventually came to its own dignified close.
By now I'm So Gone was an appropriate way to feel.
A scorching Lovelight ended the first set.
And then...Phil announces something special!!! ITs Acoustic Set Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Long Road + Tell Me Mama: Didn't know either of these songs, but I asure you that they were both tasty treats.
Deep Elem! Its sing along with Larry Campbell time! (BTW Camden is the home of Campbell soup corporation, so the area was filled with signs and landmarks assuring us that Camden was Campbell Country - MmmMmmGood!)
FOTD: As perfect as you could want. It felt like music around a campfire - warm, close and friendly.
Big Mon: BIG JAM!!!
Second Set
Playing in the Band: A couple of early miscues were shrugged off, and then the fireworks begin!
Cumberland Blues: Holy shit!!! Fast and relentless. My buddy is buying the download just for the Cumberland.
Uncle John's: Okay, I know it was great, but the treats I ate were making it very hard to remember exactly why. Oh yeah, because Uncle John had come to take us home! Things got crazy spacey at this point.
Mountains of the Moon: A perfect place to land after a crazy space-trip. Gorgeous. I could have stayed there forever, but the trip still had someplace else to visit. In the midst of the jam out of mountains its..............................
Terrapin Station: Inspiration!!! The big payoff! No Lady with a Fan, just straight to the station. Supercharged!!! Incredible jam out; at this point I realized that Molo is God. The jam morphs into a rousing I Know You Rider, an appropriate ending to blow-up set.
We knew we had witnessed an event, and we eagerly waited for our Box of Rain encore. After a long break its time for DonorRap/Intros. Thanks Larry!
And finally, Box of RXXX - HELP ON THE WAY!!! Get out of fucking town! The band is not winding down at all, they feel like they are mid second set. This night just might go on forever. The Slipknot is short, but powerful. What a way to end the show, but the band isn't done!!! Its a full out Help/Slip/Franklin's!! I've heard a lot of Franklin's in my day, but this may have been the hottest. It was as if the band couldn't cool down. This was easily the best encore I have ever witnessed in a career of 60+ shows. That is appropriate, because this was one of the best shows I have been to.
Sebastiananxiety - thanks for the review - I was sitting right next to you - we were chatting between first set and acoustic - I was the guy from Monmouth County- central NJ. I never read a review on this board and then said - hey I was right next to that guy - cool stuff
I've never reviewed a show on this board but I woke up and can't fall back to sleep so here goes I've been going for a while and seen a bunch so I guess I qualify. I had heard a bunch of recordings of this tour and read a lot of setlists so I kind of knew some of what they had been doing. Nonetheless I tried to go with no expectations. I like what Phil is doing with younger guys like Molitz and Jackie Greene - I think it is very cool and breathes life into this music. Anyway...
Show started with Schoolgirl - this would not have been my choice but it was done well. I beleive it is the Butterfield Blues version. Jackie's vocals were strong and some good blues leads from Larry. Phil's bass sounded crisp and clear. I was 5th row pit right in front of Jackie and the sound was suprisingly good - not boomy as I would expect it to be so close. Although I could not hear Molitz as well as I would have liked.
Deal - this was decent and had some building jam to it although they sounded a little ragged and not as tight as the Boston recording I had heard. I'll have to hear the recording and see if maybe it was just me. At one point Jackie gave the lead to Larry saying, "Mr. Campbell..." I thought that was nice. Some Deadheads are not into any showmanship at all but hell...Pigpen was all about that so it's cool as far as I am concerned.
Mexican Girl - I like this song - it's not a show higlight but it was well played - decent leads from the guitarists and good vocals. It's nice to see a young guy playing his songs with this band and see them band making them their own. It doesn't seem at all like Phil is just indulging Jackie by letting him play his tunes. The band seemes genuinely into it with smiles all around.
Jam and Scarlet - I enjoyed this. It's a different interpretation of Scarlet and this is not a Dead cover band. Larry had some good distorted leads and I thought it was well played. I like the timing on this and it is not a typical fluid Dead sound - more stopping and starting with breaks.
I'm So Gone - I can't really comment on this - I saw a friend in the crowd right next to me that I hadn't expected to see and it kind of distratced me for a few.
Lovelight - decent - Jackie on keys. Fun vocals - not as intense as I've seen but well played and fun. Phil ends set telling us we will be getting an acoustic set - everyone is psyched. All in all the first set was OK - not ultra high energy but a decent night of music so far. I was especially happy that the pit was pretty roomy and everyone was pretty laid back. Our security guard was a lady named Barbara that had seen over 400 shows - she was the coolest
Seiing them bring out the upright for Phil in the acoustic set was just cool. I knew he would be playing it but it was still cool to see. I was excited to see what Larry might play in this setting.
Lost Highway - I didn't know this song but it sounded good and I think Larry's voice on this type of tune is really fitting - sort of Johnny Cashish. I think Larry was playing a Martin D-28 which I really dig.
Tell Me Mama - Jackie Blues tune - I dig this song and Jackie's vocals and harp on it. I think the lyrics are good and it was done with feeling.
Deep Elem - brought a nice response from the crowd and was well done with Larry on vocals. Although Phil had some feedback issues with his bass it was still a decent acoustic version of the tune.
FOTD - this was real nice. Jackie on vocals, Phil doing the last "extra" verse.
Big Mon - I dug this. I am a big Blue Grass and Sam Bush fan and this was nice to hear with solos from the guys all around and Larry leading the way on fiddle. All in all the acoustic set was nice although I wish it was longer
Third set - I was really hoping they would do an all out blow out jam at this point. The show so far was good but they seemed to be in like 4th gear or something and I was waiting for it to kick into 5th and overdrive (except Molo of course - that guy pounds the crap out of the DW drums all the time in such a tasteful elegant way. He is one of the best drummers I have ever seen.)
Playin - I could hear Phil do the ten count to start this so I knew it was coming and it was good. Crowd was high energy - Phil's bass crisp and clear. Jam was nice with changes and movement. Phil leading the way through everything.
Cumberland - as previous reviews have said there were some vocal miscues but the energy was there. All I can say is Larry fingerpicked the crap out of this tune on his Tele wearing a country shirt and all. For me that more than made up for the vocal miscues.
Uncle Johns - Larry on mandolin. This was really cool with a Calypso kind of feel to it. I think Phil has been doing the tune this was for a while. It was well done - like someone else said a little ragged on vocal harmonies but hey the Grateful Dead very often were as well and we conveniently seem to forgive them so... Through the jam Jackie and Larry switch to electrics and the jam moves off further into the outer regions. I like these jams - they are not 50 minute noodle fests - there seems to be directon and purpose and if something isn't going anywhere Phil seems to change the directon rather than stand in one place forever.
The jam mellowed and Larry was handed his citern so I was pretty sure we were going to Mountains of the Moon. I love this song and I thought this was very well played. Long jam into it before Phil sang - then a jam in the middle before the last verse - it sounded so nice. The citern is such a nice touch. I think the original Aoxomoxoa version had a harpsichord played by TC on it. The citern adds just the right sound.
Through the jam Phil started playing some very strong lines and I thought it might go into Golden Road but no...it melted into the Terrapin riff and they came into the song on Inspiration. A different upbeat feel than a Dead version and I enjoyed it. Kind of came out of nowhere and it was nice to hear something they had not played yet this tour. Phil, while not Pavoritti, sounded very good to my ears and I think he did OK with it. It's kind of hard not to cut the guy some slack on the vocals when he is playing such righteous bass and smiling the whole time and having such a great time.
Jam and then Rider - very nice - well played Rider. Phil bringing the whole band down quiet for the headlight line. Good rock leads from Jackie and Larry - strong ending.
Long break before the encore and at this point I was mostly satsified. They had cranked up the energy and I was expecting maybe Alabama or NFA or Casey Jones as an encore - a rocker. Phil counted off and as soon as they hit the opening F minor to Help I let out a big howl...which is saying a lot because I am kind of a reserved guy. At this point I think it was almost midnight so it was very cool. Help was good - nice movement thorugh all the parts - when they reached Slipknot they totally screwed up and were about to skip slip altogether and Phil and Molo kind of reigned it in and I saw Phil make a face as if to say, "Alright, this is cool...let's go with it." They took the ending of Slipknot and bent it back into itself to give us a full reading of Slipknot. This was kind of a highlight for me - the way this music really is being played live without a net. It was great to watch a flub become something interesting on the fly. Slip was good with plenty of jamming and Phil thorughout. The ending of Slip is one of my favorite things - I love Molo's fills. Franklin's was strong and high energy - what more can I say - it's one of my favorite tunes.
All in all the show was really good - it built steam from a decent concert to a great Phil show. I wasn't bored at any point which has been my complaint at some of the jamband type shows I have been to lately. Halfway through I am like...alright, I get it. I'm kind of tired of standing here. That wasn't the case last night. I enjoyed watching everyone have a good time, explore, and learn each other. I like Molitz's keys and the synth effects as well. Jackie Greene is a great young talent. Larry Campbell is a great professional. He only brings good things to the table. Molo is the Lion King And Phil's bass and playing so as good as I've ever heard him. Going to see 2 shows at the Nokia and I am looking forward to it.
wowwowowow.....
first set I truthfully wanted to leave, I was completely disallusioned. THANK YOU CHONKS for being my saving grace du
Lost Highway is a classic Hank Williams song, that was VERY special.
Jackie was out of this world in the jams, never overplayed anything, stayed within his limits and created some great tonal bends and shits. Spent a lot of time fiddling with his pedals to get the tone right for each song/jam. At one point in Slip he just stopped playing and let the rest of them go, it was great to watch him listen so well. But man he looks really young!
Amazing show......1st set was slower but nice...the acoustic set could of been longer and they could of done Ripple..The 3rd set was outfuckinragous..nicely played and full of those extra complexities we all love about phil...still awake from show time...smile! and GOOD morning
damn
finnay got our terrepin
too bad no lady with a fan tho.
not too sure about song titles but the 2nd first set Jackie tune had a catchy refrain "Gonna Dance With The Devil." I'm not sure if this is "I'm So Gone."
awesome show!
meredith -- if by some miracle you read this, please email me.
Just listened to 10/9. I guess I was confused by seeing the Cold Black Devil in the setlists. I guess the "Gonna Dance With The Devil" song really is "I'm So Gone." ...nevermind.
as a 30yr+ gd attendee who has seen phil's level of interest wax and wane depending on his collaborators----i can say that he is most definitely enthralled by jackie's circa 65' dylan raw talent.and who couldnt be? the view from the rail revealed that jackie was leading the band thru big stretches of the acoustic set, and thru most of the "songy" parts of all three sets.whatever "it" is, the kid's got it.tremendous show with brimming optimism for the future.
Went to the show last night. I hadn't listened to this version of the band before last night's show, kind of a conscious decision on my part. I had heard Jackie Greene's stuff before because I'm a huge Mother Hips fan, and he's done some stuff with them before. My brother and I were very underwhelmed by the first set. It did feel like they were warming it up though. Didn't like JG on Schoolgirl. Deal was better. JG's songs are cool, but just one would have been more to my liking. Scarlet Begonias was easily the highlight for me in the first stanza. Acoustic mid-set was really a nice surprise! Better than the first, and the third set was what I came to the show for. It was the best of Phil Lesh's show. Jackie clearly had a hard time with the 10/4 of PITB, just a real wreck. Then the jam started and Phil rolled down a nice line and from there on, this show smoked! Cumberland was the highlight of the show for me, a little ragged, but Larry was playing blindingly fast on this!! He was awesome! Uncle John's was a true joy, played at a much quicker pace than the last time I saw this song played, RatDog 7/13. RD's jam was a bit longer but Phil took this version way outside like RD did that night. Another highlight! The acoustic Mountains of the Moon is a personal favorite, Phil actually sounded good on vocals and the music was stupendous with the cool feedback from JG! Steve Molitz had really cool synthesizer sounds throughout this third set. Terrapin's Inspiration was a cool addition to the set, and Rider was acceptably jammed. Help>Slip>Franklin's was a really fantastic encore. Phil was really playing some propulsive bass, and Franklin's was over-the-top! Overall, I thought this was a very good show, featuring a strong third set. A real good time, I'm sure the folks up in NYC will have a great time with this band! Oh, and one more thing, John Molo was the MVP of this show for me. The guy is simply amazing, and I will say this, this show could easily have been real average with a lesser player. I said to my brother during the show and he concurred, that because Phil and John are such a force together, that they could have almost any competant lead player and the shows would be good, because they are just that good. I just wanted to mention that because Molo really deserves praise.
What happened to all those predicted (hoped for) Donna Jean sightings? I checked the reviews and noone seemed to miss her presence. Especially during Playing. Hope you weren't too disappointed.
For anyone interested: Terrapin Station consists of several parts, only two of which are usually performed live: Lady with a Fan and Inspiration. Calling Inspiration as Terrapin is like referring to Let it Grow as Weather Report Suite.
What a fantastic show!!! Don't think I've ever heard it sound so good in the tweeter before! Can't wait for NYC!
thanks phil, the show stole my face, what a fun time, loved the spaceyness of the third set and having seen the acoustic set made it a very special evening thanks again phil you never disapoint me, keep on trucking phil
best wishes to all of you who get to catch any of these shows, they are indeed special events to cherish forever
Well, the family and I really enjoyed this one!
Venue was nice, and it was cool to be greeted by Mutha2k at our section, asking me, "so who are you?". She dug my Philzone shirt by Tapecat, lol.
I've listened to most of this tour, and Isaw the three Chicago shows.
I hear and see a lot of good things happening.
Phil is loosening up on his overly tight controlam and the jams are freer.
Jackie Greene is settling in, not forcing it to show he is worthy. He knows he is, and his comfort zone in this group is getting huge, and it is making the whole band better. LC is letting it fly better than ever, a few more dissonant notes and some more feedback.
Molitz is a nice fit, and his synth playing sends the ship deeper into space.
Molo is better than ever, if that is possible. His fills, in Slipknot for example, are tastier to me.
Phil is relaxing, playing his ass off and clearly loving what he is hearing in this band. Like a proud parent watching their child spread their wings.
And...WHAT'S UP WITH ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO LEAVE AFTER THE FIRST SET?! Not just here, but in the reviews of the other shows, too. You might never have made it to the second set of most post-1981 GD shows!
Psyched for NOKIA
"You might never have made it to the second set of most post-1981 GD shows!"
No kidding, how soon they forget.

My 1st. was 5-2-81 in Philly.
Whew! I just made it. :-)
They need to start these shows an hour earlier, or give the curfews the bird. Saturday night in Chicago, I thought Phil wanted to keep playing. Give us the music, or give us death!
Nice first show Mark. We had seats right next to the board that night and all these tapers kept bugging us to switch seats with them but I wouldn't do it, loved to watch Healy work.
last time i saw phil in camden (the trey tour), i didnt get home until 5:00am...and i live about 2 hrs away (harrisburg area). i sat in traffic within view of the toll booth at the ben franklin bridge for 1.5 hrs. if i hadnt REALLY enjoyed that show, i may not have ventured back to camden.
yesterday, i got caught in a major traffic jam on the skuykill. it took me 1.5 hrs to get from the valley forge exit of the turnpike to camden. i was frazzled. and had already started to think about never going to philly for a show again. but i met up with friends and still had 2 hours of pre-game.
and then THAT SHOW! wow. i enjoyed most of the 1st set (apparently i'm in the minority there). but yeah, the acoustic set and the 3rd set were amazing. and the "triple" encore. yeah, that show was awesome.
(stayed over at a buddy's place this time. wise choice. if i go back, it seems like i need to stay over the night before too. lol.)
sorry we missed seeing you, kate and zoner crew. we tried once, since my friend had an extra he was giving away. but it was getting late, and i wasnt sure where you were anyway. next time, maybe.
CANNOT WAIT TO LISTEN TO THIS ONE AGAIN!
oh, i heard that golden road tease strong too, before veering into terrapin.
i enjoyed most of the 1st set >>>
That's because you sat in traffic and still made it in time. :-)
By the Valley Forge exit you say? I used to live not far from there. From what I remember, that whole area is one big traffic clusterfuck.
yeah mark, the skuykill sucks bad. but i dont have many choices on routes coming from hbg. i couldve taken the blue route, then 95 north, but the radio traffic reports said those routes were just as bad.
"For anyone interested: Terrapin Station consists of several parts, only two of which are usually performed live: Lady with a Fan and Inspiration. Calling Inspiration as Terrapin is like referring to Let it Grow as Weather Report Suite."
################################################## #
Sorry, but this is not correct and was debunked in the OTHER STUFF thread on the Camden show. What you call "Inspiration" is in fact TERRAPIN STATION. The opening lyrics we have come to think of as the opening several verses of the song are LADY WITH A FAN.
"See this band. What they lack in sophistication they make up in spirit. This is the real deal."
Agree. This band will be well-rehearsed by Halloween and NYC is going to be taken by storm for 2 weeks.
Hi guys this is my first chance to post since the monster I saw Fri. night. I have read some of the other reviews and most of you seemed to have as good a time as us. We both had a great time in Camden I thought that the show, while still trying to be objective was first the best show of the tour so far (for us). And for me personally right up there with some of the best music I have been lucky enough to see live. The feeling and experience will be with me forever just like the best dead shows that have been burned into my mind from the moment I experienced them till this day. I can go back to some and relive them just like yesterday, That is how this show ranks with me. I will never forget it and it will most deffinatly note fade away into the blend of fog that this tour will eventually become in my memory. You know the shows I mean the ones you will NEVER forget. So I may be a little biased but that was fuckin unbelievable wasn,t it???????? Thanks for reading. Catch
Sounds about right.
Back to reality...got some sleep and tready for a better revue of this show...
1st set
Schoolgirl was weak and disjuncted abit for me...when it takes me more than 3 mins to get a familiar song...then it's disjuncted
Deal picked up some power and was nice...
then they played some JG song I really liked called Mexicain girl...nice tempo and had a Stones fell to it....
Into a nice jam that lead up to a great SCARLET B's > I'm so gone another good JG song
and closed it with a nice Lovelight
***I give the 1st set a B for nice effort and cool mix**
2nd set acoustic
Lost Hwy-nice tune..played well and Tell Me Mama was a great song too..real bluesy and was fun to boogie too...THEN they did the 2nd live GD tunes I ever heard(10-30-80)...DEEP ELEM BLUES was beautiful..then into a awesome FRIEND OF THE DEVIL...closing it with Big MON...WAYYYYY to short as far as i'm concerned...I love acoustic muisc and would gladly love to see phil do an entire acoustic tour..WOW! it's was worth the price of the ticket to see phil play upright bass....thanks you phil!!!
3rd set
This had kick up ass all over it from the get-go.....
Playin > Cumberland BLues was fantastic ad had essence of pre 1981 GD to it...right into UNCLE JOHN"S ..wow is all i could say when the followed into a slight disjuncted but yet still kick ass version of TERRAPIN STATION!! then into I know you RIDER which just has that same ole' feel to it...
Figuring they were gonna let us out with a little tunes..was my personal underestimation of the situtation at that time.....They Encored with HELP> SLIP > FRANKLIN'S TOWER...Just what the doctor ordered...they kicked with grace and power...GodBless Phil Lesh for a fantastic show...
Nice to meet a bunch of cool zoners and party down with them..I slept about 20 hrs since sat so...I thought I'd leave this review for your reading plesure!
Camden - This is by far the weakest assembly of Friends yet. Other than Cumberland Blues there was no 'Factor' at this show.
Bring back Warren please.
I've seen 100+ Dead shows and 25+ Phil shows...
These posts about how incredible this show was are laughable...
AWESOME SHOW!! Sooooo glad I wuz there. Was a special nite indeed. The "magic" was there.
Best encore ever saw. Some really well played somgs and what tasty jams. Some good music to shake it too. And the acousitc set - what a treat. Definitely will be getting a copy of this show - YOU should too!!! GET IT!! Listen, love it!!

Ugh...Warren Haynes is what kept me away from Phil's shows from '00 through '04. He is a one trick southern fried piece of garbage whose act grows old very, very quickly.
John Molo and Phil were the "factors" on Friday night.
Terrapin>Franklin's Tower was pure bliss!
Thanks Phil :-)
These posts about how incredible this show was are laughable... >>>
What's really laughable is how you post without any credibility.
Warren is great, but he cannot blend in. He dominates and makes everything sound the same. Both in Mule and with others. I respect how hard Warren works to spread the live music scene. The 'Q' was good, but I am glad they are not still together. It was going to go nowhere!!!!! Warren is no longer evolving, he plays the same style always.
Mr. Kennedy, I understand that this show and this group is pretty mellow. It helps to come with an open mind and ears. This was a real nice show. MOTM(listening right now) is done at least as well as the GD ever did it....What would have made you happy, SPECIFICALLY??? I am always curious. Sounds like you would prefer Phil bring back Warren rather than Jerry!
I don't agree with Kennedy's hateful assessment of the band, but why does he need "credibility" to post what he feels. Who gave YOU "credibility?" Shheesh!
Warren is the man. Last Phil show i saw was Mountain Jam with Warren which was one of the most awe inspiring events that i have ever been to. I am sorry to say that this band does not come close to the Q. Those guys had structure and element, where the JG/Campbell have none along with some really sloppy segues that just didnt flow. I hate to say it, but that was a mighty expensive ticket for me and i really would have benefited by keeping it in my pocket.
If you don't get what Phil is looking for, you just don't get/like it.
Ever heard of John Coltrane? Ever heard of Phil's book, "Searching for the Sound"?
Here is a quote from the recently released, highly regarded study of Coltrane, "Coltrane:The Story of a Sound" by Ben Ratliff:
"But I also mean sound as a balanced block of music emanating from a whole band. How important isthis? With Coltrane, sound ruled over everything. It eventually superseded composition:his later records present on track after another of increasing similarity, in which the search for sound superseded solos and structure"
Now, Phil is no Coltrane, but I think you gotta enjoy the sound this band brings. Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jerry G was all about sloppy, but I still never missed a chance to see him from 1979 to 1995. He and the Grateful Dead brought a sweet sound and a great scene round my parts twice a year.
That's why I love this, and have such a great time at these shows. The sound, the scene, etc.
Getting that is getting "it", IMHO.
Looking forward to all that. Can hardly wait until the Nokia weekends!
Yeah, I've read Searching for the Sound, have a personally autographed copy straight from Phil's hand actually. My gripes: Had to move numerous times throughout the night due to poor, muddied sound; loud and obnoxious people; guy who thought it was an outdoor festival and wuz throwing light balls around which were beyond nauseating, annoying newbie kids.I've been all over the country with phil, 50+ shows. Last night was good, but not incredible, at least not for me and my people. I love everything phil does, but i dont think i will ever go back to camden.
I would describe this show as "Ragged but Right". Mtns of the Moon without a doubt the highlight. As for my own personal experience, I had one of the most incredible times of my life, which is all that really matters in the end . . .
double post. Oops . . .
Yeah, I know how much the people can ruin a show. How about all those drunk rednecks who crowded into the GD shows from about the late '80s on, yelling, "Grateful Fucking Dead!!!!!!!!!" They ruined quite a few shows for me, lol.
Still, it's all we have.
Enjoy it while it lasts, is my advice, if you can.
I Hated last years Camden show(please never bring Trey on stage again). This was going to be my last chance for Phil. The show on Friday was spectacular! The second set blew my mind, then the third was just the perfect end to a great show. Jackie is awesome, and I hope this incarnation of P&F tours next summer.
Here's my complete review (expanding upon and correcting the typos of the 3rd set review I posted here earlier):
I'd seen both nights in Boston on this tour and afterward commented to my friends that there was absolutely no space/spacey jams during those sets. I really enjoyed those shows and there was plenty of raw rock. I wrote off the lack of mind-melt ">"s to Jackie's Greene-horn status (pun certainly intended!) But we got plenty of deep space in the 3rd set tonight.
Our seats were great (thanks GDTSTOO!) despite being a bit narrow: 5th row/pit pretty much even with Jackie and Phil. After many shows at the Tweeter (Phish/Iron Maiden(!)/TOO/Phil/Slayer/Trey) I was impressed with the clarity of the sound for the first time at this show. But this was the closest to the front I've ever been. I guess I was close enough so that the warehouse-sized echo of that steel shed didn't get in the way.
Also security was virtually non-existent with the exception of the 1st set aggressive flashlight swinging removal of some rather spaced-looking dude who apparently didn't have a ticket for this section. The guard assigned to our section was a middle-aged Jewish lady with a Stealie button on her uniform. We chatted briefly and she claimed to have been to about 500 Dead/Dead-related shows since 1965. Having "one of us" working the floor seemed to help things stay cool.
First set started off strong with a compact sexy Schoolgirl done a la the Dead spring of '95 arrangement. Deal was next, a repeat from the previous show (in Boston.) At first I was a bit disappointed at the repetition but Deal is created for rockin improv guitar interplay. And hell, Jerry ended nearly every 80s/90s JGB first set with Deal night after night. And he continually smoked on it. Not that I'm comparing, I guess I'm just trying to talk myself out of the mentality that songs can't repeat on consecutive nights to be a real good jam. How many consecutive nights of Dark Star were there in '69? Who complains? Jackie definitely leads the band on Deal. Not quite as fiery as Boston's version, but I'm not complaining. A" >" led us to Jackie's "Mexican Girl." It was a good rocker. It made me think of All Along the Watchtower meets Santana. The song came to a full stop then there was a spacey jam that became "Scarlet." I was a bit surprised at another repeat since we'd just gotten it in Boston. But hell, as long as the repeats are songs that can open up and go different places each time, I'm OK with hearing them show after show. I mean who in his right mind is gonna go "Scarlet"? dammit, not AGAIN! The version was good (has there ever been a bad Scarlet in GD/Phil history?) though it seemed a bit more low key than the Boston version. But this was the first set and we were still just warming up. Things wouldn't catch Fire (get it? hah hah) just yet. The jam went into the riff of China Cat, played in unison by Jackie and Larry. The transition: smooth organic and perfect, reminding me of those seamless non-standard early-to-mid 70s GD transitions that made you go "I wasn't expecting that! but it totally worked (eg HC Sunshine>China>Rider 2/17/73) Even though it would've been a repeat from Boston I was disappointed we didn't get a full-on China Cat. No one else here so far has noted the China Cat tease but I wrote it in my notebook at the show as it happened...I guess the tapes will tell.
Instead of China Cat we got another Boston repeat- "I'm So Gone" This is probably my favorite Jackie tune that P&F does. The interplay between Jackie and Molo is great. Jackie's leads are raw and emotional. The song evaporated into space. Jackie switched to keys and Phil fired up the bass intro of Lovelight. A good version too, with great aggressive Molo mini solos. Phil announced a break and an acoustic set. I was filled with anticipation and visions of Reckoning danced in my head.
I was surprised to see Phil on an upright bass. I didn't know he really played one. I just remember the stories of him wrestling with one for the Aoxomoxoa version of MotM.
Lost Highway was a great opener. It had me singing along, thinking warmly of hearing it on the first country/bluegrass album I ever experienced (my dad's 3LP vinyl set of the "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" all star jam led by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band---- it's a great album. Anyone else dig it?) Throughout the set Phil seemed to be having some problems with the pick-up on his bass. Some of the low notes seemed to cause an unwanted hum/drone/feedback. Other times the bass seemed inaudible. Phil seemed aware of the problems and was motioning to the on-stage sound guy but it never got fixed. Anyway, Phil seemed to play the part of the "standard" bass player. Nothing too fancy or prominent during this stripped down set. "Deep Elem" was the highlight for me. Molo's simple snappy percussion gave the song a whimsical feel. "FOTD" was well-played but I actually think I prefer the electric versions Phil does with this line-up.
FOTD sort of segued into an instrumental that apparently folks are calling "Big Mon." I wasn't familiar with it but it sounded like your standard bluegrass breakdown- a fast paced go-around of hot solos underpinned by a snare rhythm. Other reviewers seemed to like this one, but I thought the band wasn't really in-sync. Jackie's solo esp seemed really enthusiastic yet totally out of time with Molo.
And that was it. The whole acoustic set was 20 minutes from start to finish. It didn't have time to really start smoking. It was lots of fun, but the fun for me was more the idea of it than the actual execution. Also the combined change-over time before and after the acoustic set seemed to total twice as much as the actual set. That kinda killed the momentum for me. Since the set up was simple and at the front of the stage, it seemed like the crew could've broken everything down and led the way for the 3rd set in 5-10 minutes tops with the house lights still down. Oh well.
The 3rd set for me was a high point of my Phil and Friends experience. This was my 30th P&F show (since 2001) and it was probably the most beautiful and intense set out of all of them. For those of you who didn't like it, I'm not gonna argue. I realize it's totally a subjective thing, especially when it gets to the long stretches of spacey improv that tied the 3rd set together. Also, a lot of the experience has to do with where your seat is, how your day was before the show, what else is going on in your mind, etc. Anyway for me I was in the perfect place, at the perfect time, in the perfect state of mind.
It was a ragged but right version that had some intense climactic jams that had the whole crowd cheering and whooping it up in unison in that way t that gives me chills and makes me feel part of something BIG. A previous poster here called Cumberland "a train wreck" but I disagree. There was one or two vocal miscues but the energy never let up. I liked the vibe of this show. When there was a mistake Phil just grinned and made the motions as if to say "just keep going and see wher this takes us." The Uncle John's that followed was great. Larry's mandolin sounded great and Molo attacked the rhythm playfully, making a tune sound novel that's been played a thousand times by a hundred incarnations since 1969.
During the set I danced really hard.
It seemed Phil held back on his monitor-mike directions for rhythm and key-changes. As a result the jams in the 2nd electric set had a more organic feel than I'm used to with Phil. They didn't suffer from the awkward and abrupt jam transitions that sometimes kill the buzz during the P&F ">" Well Larry busted out the cittern and I figured we'd probably get Mountains (or perhaps Rosemary) Well we did get Mountains but Larry jammed on the cittern for a while before the song coalesced. The jam reminded me in a way of the acoustic/electric jam from Mountains>Dark Star that the Dead would do in the spring of '69. As others have noted, there was a strong tease of the Golden Road intro before Terrapin kicked in. I was pogoing at this point I was so excited. And the driving rock continued with a great set-ended Rider to finish the China Cat from the Boston run. ??I called the long H>S>F encore and it was great, with a ragged but right Slipknot. I think this version should be called "Slip-up/knot!" As someone else pointed out, they kinda messed up the difficult transition from Help to Slip. It sounded like they were just gonna forgo Slip and go right into Franklins-- I thought they might do it out of frustration or maybe in the interest of a curfew since this was a long encore at the end of a long 3 set show (or 2 and a half in my eyes) but Phil smiled and and looked at his bandmates and seemed to say "let's just go with it!" and so the jam was long and went into some interesting places not often associated with Slip. The following Franklins was great and I think the whole trio clocked in at about 20 minutes. A great end to a great show!
See you in Baltimore and again in NYC!
Ummmm that middle aged jewish lady with a stealie would be me......
Great show!!!! Thanx to ya'll for making it so much fun!!!!
Kudos to you mutha2k. I was taking pictures that night and when I zoomed past you a couple times, you gave me a huge smile. I didn't see the stealie, but I recognized your warm vibe. Thank YOU for being part of the whole and adding your own energy.
My pictures have just been posted for those who care to check them out. http://www.phillesh.net/philzonepages/friends_stuf f/setlists/071012.html
"These posts about how incredible this show was are laughable..."
I have to agree, first set was boring, I almost fell asleep, the acoustic set was nice, dug the Deep Elem & Big Mon, the third almost put me to sleep again except for the Cumberland & the MOTM. This lineup is just missing the X-factor for me ...
Nice pictures Tony! I was the tall guy standing in the front row who almost knocked you over into my seat when you were walking by behind me to get to the center front.
Hey Mutha, nice part-time gig for you. Thanks for doing a good job thinning out the front row gate crashers....however there was one youngster with a white muscle undershirt who absolutely stank to high heaven that got though your net and parked himself next to me. At first, I elbow danced him out of there and he moved on…....but he later came back, this time jumping around wildly and totally crowding us. I really wish you smelled him out the second time around. I glared at him and he asked me if he was bothering me. I told him I liked his energy, but he was invading our space. I asked him politely and directly to move on, but he was a stubborn customer who just wouldn’t leave. I eventually convinced him to move on thankfully without having to resort to force. He told me he would leave after the song which was Uncle John’s and as soon it slowed and segued back into a Playin’ space, I made him stick to our deal. I cracked up when the slowdown went back into the Uncle John’s finish. Anyhow, I loved the show, especially the third set and unprecedented HSF encore. Franklin's was the bomb! Onward to Baltimore!
people saying they almost fell asleep during the 1st set, and the show overall was lackluster?? Wow, hard to believe. Agreed that Set 1 wasn't too special, but the 2nd half of the show MORE than made up for it. Surprise acoutic set, and the end of the show from MOTM on was awesome.
E-Center blows - simply put
I was at this show. First show of the tour for me. I will be at 5 NYC shows. I would give it a Seven out of Ten. That feeling when the lights go down is still very awesome.
Jackie has a really soulful voice but I do not think he has the Chops to be the # 2 guitar player in Phils band.
Anyway I have 5 more shows to work up my full evaluation.
Had a wonderful time at the show. We took our 3 year old daughter with us (with lot's of ear protection) and sat in the pit/3rd row. We all had a wonderful time, great music, great energy. I cannot say enough good things about this show. The vibe everyone had was something to remember, beautiful!!! I agree the first set had it's slow moments but it just geared us up for the rest. My daughter and I did not stop dancing. I can't wait to catch them on Sunday in Syracuse!
Great Show. Props to jackie for really giving it his all. He is leaps and bounds better than adams. Good job picking this time phil. My only question is no end to schoolgirl (I dont care if shes only 15,16,17 years old) I suppose there trying to be a little more PC. That was my only gripe though. great lot and better show
